- 0:00I hope she's not listening. You better not been telling
- 0:03people our secrets about your insulin.
- 0:05No. And welcome to this week's
- 0:38episode of Anime Club, Chris. What Jake will eat now.
- 0:47I was doing nothing. I was sitting here patiently
- 0:49waiting for you to start streaming, start recording.
- 0:54Good, because this is a very serious episode this week for a
- 0:57very serious reason. Wipe that smirk off your face.
- 1:02I'd like you to take this seriously.
- 1:04Thank you. So we're here for a very special
- 1:08episode of Anime Club this month.
- 1:12What month is it, Chris? It is November this month.
- 1:18The NFL skins are slowly starting to rot now old women
- 1:27are sweeping up the broken glass of the yesteryears.
- 1:29I don't know, it's diabetes month.
- 1:31Why are you trying to make it sound?
- 1:41I don't know, because despite the fact that you lead a
- 1:44perfectly normal life full of joy and wonder, I still feel
- 1:49like, I still feel like the like, diabetes Awareness month
- 1:53makes it feel like we should be doing some sort of like serious
- 1:55charity, raising money. But instead what we're doing is
- 1:59we're just, we're watching something about pancreas.
- 2:03It's fine, Yeah. I just want to say that I do
- 2:06have type 1 diabetes and I don't really want your sympathy unless
- 2:10it is an advantage to me. If it gets.
- 2:19If it gets us at the front of a queue or something, I'll I'll
- 2:22I'll cry that I'm diabetic. If it gets you free
- 2:24prescriptions for life and A and a flu jab, why not?
- 2:28Yeah. Regular I can flu jab or type 1
- 2:35diabetes. Why not?
- 2:38Awful things? That's an awful thing.
- 2:40Which one person? What you're trying to see if our
- 2:43condition is awful. It's a bit insensitive anyway.
- 2:49In the arms. So what made you?
- 3:00Yeah. Can I report?
- 3:02Don't stop, just keep. Just keep.
- 3:04Like riffing into the microphone.
- 3:08Right, so everyone maybe actually hates diabetes.
- 3:11She keeps us here against my will.
- 3:13She says I'll not give you your insulin back unless you record
- 3:17with us every week. And so if I if I pull any faces
- 3:21or anything, I'd cry for help. Please help. 84 Welcome to this
- 3:30week's Anime Club, and we're here for a super, super special
- 3:36week. This week, there's no special
- 3:37guest except for the guest that is always with us in the form of
- 3:41Chris's broken pancreas. Because what month is it, Chris?
- 3:47It's the big D. The Big D month it is diabetes
- 3:50month, Diabetes awareness, that special time of year that is
- 3:55about me and my pancreas. Deficient friends, brethren,
- 4:00brothers in arms, sugar intolerance it.
- 4:07Crashes in middle of the night. I don't quotate I feel like I
- 4:16mean more like as in like having like a a hypoglycemic moment.
- 4:23You do do that, sometimes you do do that, don't you though?
- 4:29So because it's Diabetes Month, you have picked an anime for us
- 4:34which has nothing to do with nothing to do with diabetes.
- 4:39I'm just going to say I thought it was diabetes awareness month.
- 4:42I've seen this, it's been on the periphery for ages.
- 4:44I never really looked into it. I just thought how funny title
- 4:47in a pancreas. So that's like me and and I saw
- 4:51this couple at the front, this couple of 17 year olds.
- 4:55I did check they're not underage and couple who are like I don't
- 5:03know, they might start an organ harvesting ring.
- 5:07It's an anatomy anything that happened.
- 5:08So I walked into this and suggested this very blind.
- 5:14So I don't think it's my fault, just going to.
- 5:17Put that out there 100%. I think it's your fault it as
- 5:21much your fault as Escaphonia was my fault, except for more
- 5:24because this doesn't have giant robots in it.
- 5:26I. Don't know you knew You knew
- 5:29what Escaphonia was. Yeah, but from the perspective
- 5:35of like a 10 year old, I think that 10 year old Phoebe was
- 5:40clearly into different things, storytelling, lies.
- 5:45She loved the weird girl thing. I liked that there were giant
- 5:52robots, and I will I stand by that anyway.
- 5:54But we're not talking about the weird anime I picked.
- 5:57We're talking about the weird anime you picked.
- 5:59Yeah, but to be fair, right when we started this, we wanted to
- 6:04try some new anime that we would never.
- 6:06Normally watch so very much and we've had some great animes that
- 6:12we you've picked like Sakamoto days that we would never have
- 6:15watched otherwise. Yeah, Kaiju #8 was another of
- 6:20your picks that was turned into my favorite anime of all time.
- 6:24Well, my second favorite anime of all time because we all know
- 6:26what my first favorite anime is. Oh, what?
- 6:30Speaking of Kaiju #8, I've just. Been Oh yeah, you went to Comic
- 6:33Con? I went in Newcastle Comic Con
- 6:36and with Paul because he was doing the promo stuff for it and
- 6:39I was kind of like A tag along camera holder.
- 6:42I do. We did a video where we did a
- 6:44mystery bag. Yeah, and I feel like you and
- 6:47Paul got unfairly Aggie with Lee because his idea was great and
- 6:53you're just jealous that you didn't think of it first.
- 6:55Which is probably executed and I won, So what can I say?
- 6:59Anyway, look how did you look, right sword?
- 7:02Oh my God, it's Oh no, shut the front door.
- 7:06It's it's that. It's not.
- 7:08Chop or David? No, I know.
- 7:10But it's so cool. Look at it.
- 7:12Yeah, now I can relive all of my middle-aged fantasies now.
- 7:20Which is what kaju #8 is all about.
- 7:23I feel like that's so appropriate.
- 7:26But before we dive into anime and what I Want to Eat Your
- 7:30Pancreas is all about, we should probably make sure that your
- 7:32pancreas is OK by checking in on what snacks you got.
- 7:36Oh yeah, and before we started this, I said I'm going to pick
- 7:40some nice snacks because it's it's Japanese.
- 7:43We got little so it's spoiled for choice here.
- 7:47And I said if you don't get snacks, that means you're here
- 7:49to diabetes and everything it stands for.
- 7:51So to start off with, I've. Got a minute?
- 7:54Wait, what does diabetes stand for in your book?
- 7:57Can I just check when you say I hate diabetes and everything it
- 8:02stands for, what are you? What are you thinking diabetes
- 8:04stands for? Just, well, just in a sense that
- 8:08you just hate the hate the disabled if you if you didn't
- 8:12bring a snack. But have you ever heard of
- 8:15Ramunis drinks? And I've got a nice cola
- 8:21flavour. Which I've never had one of
- 8:23those it's. Got the glass dimple.
- 8:26Yeah. So I've.
- 8:28Never. I look forward to watching you
- 8:30try and open that. It always explodes and I've.
- 8:34Got traces 2. After this I have some crystal
- 8:39creams, the twists. This one is sticky toffee
- 8:42pudding flavour. Oh, shut the front door and.
- 8:49Then another Japanese get to see a little which is Hot Chili
- 8:52crisps. Oh, OK, you're killing it.
- 8:58You're killing it with the big D month snacks.
- 9:00I just, I just can't wait to find out what snacks you've got.
- 9:04So if you could. Yeah.
- 9:05Take it away, Phoebe. I'll just have a drink because
- 9:08obviously I'll not have anything to say for a while while you
- 9:10show off all your snacks. Yeah, so I picked up some tonic
- 9:15water which is very cold and refreshing.
- 9:21And then I also have this vape which is watermelon flavour and
- 9:27is delicious. And I also have a fun fact about
- 9:34the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua was originally
- 9:37bred for street meat. The earliest records of
- 9:40Chihuahua as a breed were was that they the was of the
- 9:44conquistadors talk describing small dogs that were being kept
- 9:48kept for delicious foods. So technically, I do have a
- 9:54snack and look at how cute he is.
- 9:57Eddie, don't eat me. Oh, no.
- 10:00Oh no. Oh.
- 10:02It's done it. I mean, it's splattered.
- 10:03With Yeah. Now that we've confirmed that
- 10:07you hate the diabetics. What?
- 10:12Which is deeply ironic as someone who is insulin
- 10:15resistant. But then I have always been a
- 10:17little bit self loathing. You just give the M.
- 10:21What is it? The plate of diabetics.
- 10:26Oh my God, that would be amazing.
- 10:30I'm a little bit blind too, so there we go.
- 10:32That kind of work. He's got like an eye thing in
- 10:35it, isn't he? Has he?
- 10:40Oh, when he refused, open his eyes.
- 10:42Yeah. Oh, when he turned the blind out
- 10:44he was tax bill anyway, so. Nothing about Wednesday, Snipe.
- 10:49That's my door's just gone and we're going to ignore it because
- 10:52I'm not starting this again. We tried to do this four times
- 10:58so. It's it's late, you should
- 11:00probably answer. It Oh fuck sake, go on your
- 11:04forehead now wait. Whoa, don't worry, man.
- 11:10I was trying to mess up the continuity.
- 11:13Amazing. So we've both got snacks.
- 11:17We both love the diabetic. Let's talk about I want to eat
- 11:23your pancreas. Oh, right.
- 11:27What? How would you describe this?
- 11:29Like what? What would you say this film's
- 11:31about? Oh, right.
- 11:34Sorry. I tried to keep a straight face
- 11:36and you couldn't because. Right, so.
- 11:42What would a quick Google have told you about this film and
- 11:44helped us avoid it? It's, it's about, it's about
- 11:49high school kids, right? They're in the last year of
- 11:51school. They're 17. 17 Yeah.
- 11:56I don't even know if literally the hug in this.
- 11:58That's about it anyway, yeah. Well, there's some weird sexual
- 12:03threat stuff as well. Yeah, it's a bit.
- 12:07Anyway, Carrot, we're jumping ahead.
- 12:09What's? Sorry.
- 12:10So yeah, this is 2 high school students.
- 12:13One of them is a nobody. He's a bit of a Dick to be
- 12:16honest. He's got no interest in all of
- 12:18his classmates, anyone. On a personal level.
- 12:22I would say he works in the library or something in the
- 12:25school library. And then it's like, right on.
- 12:28Is he into his books casually? Yeah.
- 12:31It just seems like a bit of a waste of space.
- 12:36And then there's this other high school, secondary school,
- 12:39whatever girl called Sakra. Yeah.
- 12:44Sakra, like, the tree, tree blossoms.
- 12:48And she for some reason tries to groom him.
- 12:55Where? No, I don't think it's screaming
- 12:57when they're the same age. No.
- 13:01It is a bit predatory, I will agree this, but it's.
- 13:05So she basically she is terminal, she's going to die.
- 13:11She has some pancreatic disease, which she doesn't really go into
- 13:15the specifics. Pancreatic cancer maybe, I'm not
- 13:19sure. I think it is supposed to be
- 13:21pancreatic cancer, yeah. But she doesn't see it, does
- 13:24she? She doesn't talk about it in
- 13:26detail, but you do see at one point, you see he looks in her
- 13:30bag in the hotel. They end up going to a hotel
- 13:33weirdly, and he's looking in her bag and you see all these
- 13:39different drugs and things. So it's obviously something
- 13:41that's, yeah, significant enough that she knows she's going to
- 13:46die from the first moment in the film.
- 13:49She's terminal anyway, but then so basically she makes it her
- 13:55mission to make this young boy who doesn't reveal his name
- 14:01until halfway through the film to her and then to the audience
- 14:04at the very end. And like to force him to become
- 14:09his friend and just say, Oh, well, you know, I'm dying, you
- 14:12know, so can you take us to the shop?
- 14:14I've always wanted to go here before I die.
- 14:17I've got this really long bucket list.
- 14:19I've broke up with my boyfriend and I've got friends, but I
- 14:21don't want to talk to them. I want I'll stick to you
- 14:23stranger, but I don't know. I don't know if she saw
- 14:27potential in him, that he's a nice guy, but she forces him to
- 14:30come out of his shell and be have a bit of empathy.
- 14:38Yeah, because at the. End Yeah, yeah, it's just all
- 14:40she does is teach him the meaning of friendship.
- 14:43And his heart grew 3 sizes by the end and he died of giant
- 14:48heart anus. They didn't, but.
- 14:51But close enough, yeah. Close enough, but yeah.
- 14:55So at the end, this girl, Sakura, who was dying of a
- 15:01pancreas, pancreatic disease or illness, gets stabbed and dies
- 15:07anyway. They'll have a funeral.
- 15:11Yeah. She'd been keeping the journal
- 15:14and go and. Can you remember the name of the
- 15:17journal? My journal.
- 15:21Nope, Living with dying. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:27Living with dying and she beforehand.
- 15:31She was for those listening on Spotify.
- 15:33Chris, just pull the face. Which can only be equated to
- 15:37when you walk into a lift and realise someone has left you a
- 15:40fart behind. Jonas, I'm I'm not seeing this
- 15:47film as a a fart in a lift, but I'm not.
- 15:52That would be that would be interesting on a few different
- 15:55levels, whereas this was barely entertaining on one level.
- 16:00Oh, I'll get it because I can see some positives in it.
- 16:03Okay, I'll just. Okay, yeah, let's give positive.
- 16:05Just give us some time to think of them and then so anyway, so.
- 16:11So she gets there's a diary. There's a diary and but before
- 16:16she dies, she said, Oh well, you know I'm going to die soon.
- 16:19We've been talking about for ages.
- 16:20I've been using it to justify my weird actions for months now.
- 16:24And and when when I die, can you just favour there's going to be
- 16:28a strange boy come to the house and just give me diary, but
- 16:32don't read it yourself. And then she starts reading it
- 16:37and then he goes through about what she was actually thinking
- 16:41and feeling during the whole journey of her going through a
- 16:45terminal illness, which was quite, quite nice.
- 16:47Because on the face of it, when you see her, she's always
- 16:49laughing, smiling, bubbly and kind of like brushing off all
- 16:54the bad things that happen. But inside, you know, she was
- 16:57actually really scared. And she was doing this to kind
- 16:59of cope with her herself, our mortality.
- 17:02And then and then he cries at the end.
- 17:06Yeah. I want to eat a pancreas.
- 17:09Oh, and the the title of the film comes from at the start and
- 17:13she forces them to like a like a restaurant thing where they
- 17:17specialized in organ meat. And she's just like, Oh yeah.
- 17:22And I think it was some ancient medicine where they were like,
- 17:24if you had a bad liver, you would eat like animals liver to
- 17:28get the nutrients or something to to become better.
- 17:31And then if you accept bad heart, you eat hot whatever and
- 17:38and so then I want to eat your pancreas is kind of like a thing
- 17:42from that so. Yeah.
- 17:45It's better than, I don't know, cancer dying girl.
- 17:51Which was the working title. Young person dies too soon.
- 18:00Horton with chemo, Yeah. And what on that cheerful note,
- 18:05what were some of the highlights for you?
- 18:09Also, how's the cola? I'm genuinely curious about how
- 18:12how the cola remaining is. It's it's full sugar which I'm
- 18:16not used to. I ran it with a been diabetic a
- 18:19month because you never get in these boxes.
- 18:21You never get sugar free stuff. I can't wait for your thingy to
- 18:25be for us in a minute. It's it's not.
- 18:28I've just changed it so it would for another couple of hours.
- 18:31It's too much. It's free.
- 18:33But no, it's a kind. It's like roller cola.
- 18:37But I can't. Oh, OK.
- 18:38Yeah, yeah, I quite like a roller cola.
- 18:41Very syrupy. Yeah, yeah, it coats your teeth.
- 18:47Yeah, very fuzzy in the mouth. But I'm I think that about
- 18:51normal Coke Cola because I'm not used to full sugar stuff.
- 18:56Branded. Not even branded.
- 18:58Oh, sugar, sugar. Yeah, yeah, same.
- 19:01I don't, I don't often drink like a full fat Coke, honey
- 19:06handles of sugar anymore. Yeah.
- 19:12So highlights for you in this film.
- 19:18It had some Redeemer part of the storyline, like when she found
- 19:23sorry, when he started reading the diary at the end where you
- 19:26kind of explained some of our weird actions.
- 19:29I mean, it doesn't explain all of them.
- 19:31And if I was her parents, I'll be like what you do with real
- 19:34life and how she's like, she is terminal.
- 19:39And so she actually dumped my boyfriend because she didn't
- 19:42want to be a burden on someone. And she?
- 19:45Understood that the the loner guy who was got no empathy
- 19:51didn't want to become her boyfriend because he didn't want
- 19:55to invest his time in someone that he's going to lose, which I
- 19:58know is is a weird thing thing, but it does it is a thing and
- 20:06the animation was pretty good. I thought that you get the the.
- 20:09Nice, yeah. Scenery.
- 20:11I didn't think the music was bad and it was the main thing I
- 20:15didn't like about it was the plot.
- 20:21That's fair. For me, the highlight was that
- 20:23so that in it they talk about the Little Prince.
- 20:25Have you ever read or seen The Little Prince?
- 20:28Do I look like a reader? With those glasses, yes.
- 20:34With those glasses, yes. But the wrong kind of book.
- 20:39What you read books? So the Little Prince is, I think
- 20:44it's French, but it's in lots of different languages.
- 20:48It's one of the most translated books ever to have been in
- 20:52existence. I think outside of like the
- 20:53Bible. It's like very wide, widely
- 20:57loved and it's a children's story.
- 21:01But I don't, I don't know. I think it's probably got less
- 21:06plot than the Haines Manual, but it's much more heart warming.
- 21:17And but it primarily it's a story about grief and loss.
- 21:21And it's like like letting go. So the and and they talk about
- 21:26that book. Both of it's for that.
- 21:27Both of them have read and loved that book.
- 21:29And it's one of the few things that they have in common with
- 21:31each other because I think their relationship is defined by the
- 21:34fact that they're very opposite people in lots of ways.
- 21:38But they do throughout the film have like these little
- 21:40touchstones of like things that where they see things the same
- 21:43way or where they have like key, key common interests, like just
- 21:48enough for them to start building like a genuine
- 21:50friendship with each other. And at the end, So my favorite
- 21:55bit is the bit where she dies. And I don't mean that in like a
- 22:00shady way. I just mean that in like a, when
- 22:07he's reading the diary, he sees it like you see her as if she's
- 22:12talking to him, but the way that she's dressed and in the scene,
- 22:16like the landscape that she's in, it's like very surreal and
- 22:19space like, and that's very much like the, the images from the
- 22:22Little Prince, like the original illustrations.
- 22:25It's obviously like a nod to those.
- 22:28And I really liked that kind of reference point because it's a
- 22:31it's a book that is very loved by and by in particular by my
- 22:35sib Soph, who has been on the podcast watching Dan to Dan.
- 22:42So it's like one of their like, like strong childhood nostalgia
- 22:47books. I think like it's very dear to
- 22:49them. So like obviously I'm every time
- 22:51I see anything remotely like the little Prince, I'm like, oh, so
- 22:55so it's like I liked that bit just for the like nod to to to
- 23:01the for the nod to the better story about loss and grief.
- 23:08Yeah, but you're right. It is a very beautiful film.
- 23:11Some of the sound soundtracks, all right.
- 23:15It's kind of slice a slice of lifey.
- 23:21But for me, I feel like this is like, if if you were going to
- 23:24get like it's it just for me, this film didn't feel like it
- 23:28had anything really like attention grabbing or unique
- 23:31about it. Like, it felt like a bit like,
- 23:36how do you write a sad teenage love story by numbers?
- 23:41Yeah. And it's like, it's like romance
- 23:43anime by numbers. And I think that, you know, the
- 23:45most, the most dramatic thing is that she dies.
- 23:48But outside of that is actually quite well.
- 23:50And then there's some weird, so like there is some weird sexual
- 23:53threat stuff that happens in a hotel room and then later in her
- 23:56bedroom where she's decided that she wants to do something
- 24:01naughty with someone that she doesn't love.
- 24:06So as a prank tries to like, like I think emotionally
- 24:11blackmail him into bed with her, which just didn't feel great.
- 24:15Just as a whole sequence of events if it left.
- 24:18Like it left me feeling like, oh, I'm not sure about this.
- 24:21Which is why Chris and I have in fact looked up how old these
- 24:25characters were. Yeah.
- 24:30Yeah. I think, yeah, I think I know
- 24:34exactly what you mean by the sad, evil kind of love story,
- 24:39paid by numbers thing where they've tried to do that.
- 24:42And I think on paper they've kind of got a story.
- 24:47I can see what they're trying to do.
- 24:48I just don't think it quite gets there with the with the plot.
- 24:54Yeah, and with I agree. I mean, the things that took me
- 24:58out of it was like, I know it's an anime and I know it's it's
- 25:03not meant to be realistic and superb and amazing things can
- 25:07happen, but it's just like what 17 year old can just go on an
- 25:12overnight stay in a hotel on a whim?
- 25:16And not just any hotel at a Hilton.
- 25:18We're not talking like a Travelodge, Do you know what I
- 25:19mean? Like.
- 25:22With. Booze as well.
- 25:23Like yeah, they're purchasing alcohol.
- 25:30It is weird. It is weird.
- 25:33Yeah. And took it out for, took it out
- 25:37for us. Yeah.
- 25:39Do you know, and I was thinking about this afterwards, there is
- 25:42no reason that these two characters need to be in high
- 25:46school. Like they could have been
- 25:48university students and it would have been just like they
- 25:52wouldn't have been any difference in terms of the
- 25:54emotional payoff, which isn't bad.
- 25:57Like I found myself when he like cries at the end for the and you
- 26:00see him show emotion for the first time.
- 26:03Like I had a moment where I was like, oh, oh, which for a film
- 26:08that I wasn't enjoying is something a bitter growth, a
- 26:15little bit of growth. But I do think, like, I don't
- 26:18think they needed to be 17. Do you know what I mean?
- 26:20Like it would have been just as tragic if they were 20 year olds
- 26:23or if they were 30 year olds. Like it would still be too young
- 26:27to die and might have actually have helped with a bit more of
- 26:34the like. I don't know, it just might have
- 26:36helped in a way. Yeah.
- 26:38Because they could have been Co workers or something.
- 26:41Yeah. I mean, do you have much
- 26:44experience with romance animes? Would you say this is romance?
- 26:50I would say this is definitely romance slice of life anime and
- 26:55not a huge amount of experience to be honest like it does.
- 27:00That's not that doesn't tend to be the where my anime attention
- 27:05is drawn. That's fine.
- 27:06I was just curious because even you with your with your tiny
- 27:10little bit of experience is more than me because I've had zero
- 27:15and. Oh, no.
- 27:16And this was your first one. Yeah, it's like when Molly's
- 27:21first anime. You've watched five times,
- 27:24family. I I don't think that's a
- 27:28romance. Anime.
- 27:29I think that's a romance anime. I think it's a romance anime,
- 27:32and I also think the other romance anime that I would say
- 27:34is better than this is Sailor Moon.
- 27:38They're both both of those. Both of those are anime where
- 27:44the central point is is about some sort of romance between
- 27:48characters. And then the rest is just like,
- 27:51how are we going to tell that story?
- 27:52Oh. Fair enough, but I was just
- 27:55going to say, how do you think it compares to other other ways
- 27:59like that of the same genre? Because if it was like a.
- 28:03If it was like a Sean Hudden fight anatomy, I'll be like, Oh
- 28:06yes, it ranks. It's fairly low or fairly high
- 28:09in my scale, but what about yours for?
- 28:15Yeah, I, I think it's quite low in terms of the ones that I've
- 28:20seen. So recently I did start watching
- 28:24one, which is about like a guy who works in his mum's bakery
- 28:28and he has a very scary face. So everyone is always thinking
- 28:32that he's like a hoodlum who is. And he goes to like a terrible
- 28:36school with like all the like troublemakers.
- 28:40And it's next door to like a really good, a really good posh
- 28:44school. And then one day one of the
- 28:45students from the posh school comes into the bakery and they
- 28:48kind of have like a budding romance, but he's very slow to
- 28:52catch on to what it is. And she's obviously desperately
- 28:54in love with him. And also cake.
- 28:58And I found that anime way like way more engaging than this for
- 29:03some reason, but that on paper has less of a actual storyline.
- 29:10But I think maybe it's also because I think the characters
- 29:13in this, they're not that likeable.
- 29:16Like, you know, she's she's, she's weirdly manipulative and
- 29:23toxic and is dealing with her own mortality in a way that
- 29:29feels really unhealthy and sad. He's desperately unlikable.
- 29:35Yeah, I think so. I was, I was thinking about
- 29:41Sacre and I think she's pushed all of her close friends and
- 29:46people that care about that away but wants that kind of human
- 29:52contact because she doesn't like being alone.
- 29:55So she's. Kind of.
- 29:56Using the Shiga he's called, Yeah.
- 30:01And she's kind of using him as like AI still need human contact
- 30:06kind of thing. But I don't want people to get.
- 30:10I don't want to tell my close family that I'm dying because
- 30:14apparently he's the only one I knew, obviously, besides her
- 30:16parents I'm assuming. Yeah, well, he even at the end
- 30:22he says like because he then has this weird interaction with her
- 30:26best friend where you find out her best friend never knew that
- 30:28she was dying. So he kind of also leaves.
- 30:35She she kind of leaves him. So part of the reason she leaves
- 30:39the diary with him because she's like, you can either share it
- 30:41with people or not. It's up to you how like what you
- 30:44do with it. But she kind of leaves like an
- 30:46the emotional burden of sharing her bad news with him, which
- 30:52feels, I don't know, just she just like fucking him over
- 30:57again. It's terrible from beyond the.
- 31:06It's all a bit weird. It's a bit weird.
- 31:08And I don't know, like, yeah, I would.
- 31:13It's yeah. I didn't love this film, I have
- 31:16to be honest. No, Jordis, I was going to say,
- 31:22would you recommend it? I wouldn't.
- 31:25I wouldn't, I would really wouldn't.
- 31:27And I can't think of anyone that I would recommend it to.
- 31:31I might recommend it to someone who I know like specifically
- 31:34like very sweet anime. So it like, but it is very,
- 31:41yeah. In terms of the archetypes that
- 31:43are in it, It feels, it doesn't feel like something that I would
- 31:46want to be like recommending to someone liked like, yeah.
- 31:56It tries to be a slice of life romance and it does neither
- 31:59particularly well. I would say that's a very fair
- 32:03cop. So can I ask very serious
- 32:06question in this you, you've said just before that like the
- 32:12reason it's called I want to eat your pancreas is because of like
- 32:14this belief that if you eat like a pancreas, if your pancreas is
- 32:18bad, then it will like heal you. And they also talk about like in
- 32:24foreign countries. They don't say what what
- 32:27specific country. It's just in foreign countries
- 32:29there is a belief that if you eat the organs of other people
- 32:32you like inhabit some of their spirit.
- 32:34If you were going to eat an organ of someone, who would it
- 32:39be and what organ are you picking?
- 32:41Like what? What kind of like heart, liver,
- 32:44pancreas? Like what are you going for in a
- 32:46loved one, and which loved one are you going to consume after
- 32:50they're dead? I don't know because most of my
- 32:54family's organs are knackered, like me.
- 32:58Dad's got diabetes, so it's me sister.
- 33:03I don't know if it's can I just pick anyone besides a family
- 33:09member? You know, it doesn't have to be
- 33:11a family member, it just has to be like someone like anyone who,
- 33:14Whose organ are you going to pick and which organ?
- 33:18I was going to pick Lee's liver, but that's not the best these
- 33:22days. I mean, he's put it through his
- 33:24paces, but he hasn't. It's still working despite his
- 33:28best efforts so. I would take his pancreas
- 33:34because he's gave it some. It would have a pancreas
- 33:39equivalent of a six pack because it's been worked that much so.
- 33:46Especially after that time that he ate all those sugar free.
- 33:51Oh yeah, no, they were laxatives.
- 33:53Which is those? The laxative.
- 33:56Like what are they called the laxative?
- 33:57Gummy bears? Yeah.
- 34:01Yeah. Good times.
- 34:03Check out Top Gramps, The specifically the episode where
- 34:06Lee tries not to shit himself. I can't even remember what film
- 34:11you were watching at the time. I don't know because it was too
- 34:17busy trying to, like I was trying to go really slow and
- 34:19just talk and talk and you could see him sweating and sweating.
- 34:24But yeah, he was not in a good way by the time that finished.
- 34:33Yeah, OK, fair. Lee's Lee's pancreas you're
- 34:36going for. Yeah, what about you?
- 34:39Nice, good shout. I think I'd game the system and
- 34:46do like Adele's vocal cords, you know?
- 34:50Then you could buy anyone's organs because of the singing
- 34:53money. Exactly.
- 34:55And I could have a whole new body.
- 34:56I could. I could have a Franken Thebes.
- 35:02Oh, the legs of a gazelle. Oh, if you were going to pick a
- 35:12body part from an animal, what body part would you pick?
- 35:15Legs of a gazelle are good. Neck of a giraffe.
- 35:18Can you imagine a nightmare for trying to find a bed that you
- 35:21would fit in? Your arms would be the same
- 35:23length. You couldn't reach you'd.
- 35:26Have to be like, have you ever seen a giraffe try and get
- 35:31something off the floor where they have to like splay their
- 35:33legs out in order to createspace for their necks?
- 35:36I love it. That's how I imagined I'd end up
- 35:41brushing my teeth. I would pick gorillas on corner
- 35:55of your back. Oh, OK.
- 35:59You're going for additional limb, not as a replacement.
- 36:02Yeah, I don't want to. I don't want to handicap.
- 36:06Why have you gone for gorillas arm and not monkey prehensile
- 36:09tail? That's what I want to know.
- 36:11You've gone gorilla arm. I'm sorry Phoebe, but an arm
- 36:15stronger than the tail because if you want to hang from
- 36:22something you get hanged for longer with a gorillas arm.
- 36:25From the back, I'm just imagining like your body just
- 36:28completely limp. But like hench gorilla arm.
- 36:38Amazing. So on that note, we're not
- 36:43recommending this film. We both got very easily
- 36:45distracted while watching it and while talking about it.
- 36:48Yeah. I mean, I didn't.
- 36:50Watch this again. You're not going to watch this
- 36:54again. Of course not.
- 36:55No, no, no. You're.
- 36:58Tempted, but that's fair. So next week I've decided we're
- 37:04going to watch something very different.
- 37:07It's been good. Well, I'm hoping so.
- 37:12Also, though, about failing bodies.
- 37:14We're going to watch Cells at Work Black Ops.
- 37:19So we've both watched Cells at Work and it was one of our first
- 37:22episodes and it was an anime that we both enjoyed way more
- 37:26than we thought we were going to enjoy it.
- 37:28The Black Ops one I haven't seen.
- 37:30All I've seen are pictures of the white blood cell online with
- 37:34just an impossibly ample bosom for a cell because it's their
- 37:42their gender swapped the characters.
- 37:44So the red blood cell is a guy and the white blood cell is a
- 37:49lady in Black Ops. And instead of it being a body
- 37:54of like which is in peak physical condition, this Black
- 37:59Ops is supposed to be a body that's like been put through its
- 38:01paces. So I feel like it will be more
- 38:03relatable to us as we continue to celebrate all things body for
- 38:10diabetes awareness month. We do body November.
- 38:16Why not Bod Nov. Bod Nov.
- 38:22Bod Nov. November D So yeah, black cell
- 38:30cells at work, Black Ops. That's what we're going to watch
- 38:32next week. Come back and join us.
- 38:35Make this think of Call of Duty Black Black Ops.
- 38:39It's, I think the vibe is probably going to be kind of
- 38:41similar. I think it's going to be way
- 38:44less cute, way more bad ass. Good.
- 38:49I want to see them tackle the real issues that everyday
- 38:52people, day people. I've, well, I've seen them, I've
- 38:56seen on, I've seen on the, on the gram, they talk about it.
- 39:00The there's an episode about alcohol and hangovers.
- 39:03So I think you'll get your wishes.
- 39:07What about? Does it explain why when I stand
- 39:09up too fast I go really dizzy? I don't know, but it should do.
- 39:19Can I explain a meat sweat? Can I explain menopause?
- 39:28So Google phones, Phoebe. Wait, hang on, that gets Google,
- 39:34but I entertained your I can't stand up without getting
- 39:37lightheaded and dizzy because I'm old.
- 39:41Sorry Phoebe, it's my month. OK.
- 39:51I'm joking. I'm joking.
- 39:52Laughter is being picked up on the on the microphone.
- 39:56I don't think it is. So there's just going to be an
- 39:58awkward. Silence after I say something.
- 39:59It is. There's just going to be an
- 40:01awkward. Silence because as you pointed
- 40:04out earlier, I hate the big D, but also that you've been really
- 40:09leaning into this this month and it's been making me laugh every
- 40:12time you did. Like I've been getting messages
- 40:16where where Chris is like cough cough my month cry face.
- 40:24I can't believe you did this for my.
- 40:25Month. Yeah.
- 40:29When's your month, Phoebe? Every month's my month, babe.
- 40:34I'm a queen. Fair enough.
- 40:40Every month. That's the most confident thing
- 40:46I've ever been able to save my life, and I'm loving it.
- 40:48So we're going to end here. Thank you so much for
- 40:53recommending this particular anime.
- 40:56I look forward to seeing you again next week, and I hope
- 41:00everyone else comes back. I hope everyone else comes back
- 41:04to hopefully hear us talk about something with a little bit more
- 41:07enthusiasm. But in the meantime, say, stay
- 41:10gorgeous everybody, and make sure that when you are asked to
- 41:13do blood tests that you go to the doctors and do those blood
- 41:16tests. Happy Fridays, Yes.
- 41:22It is Friday today.
