Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, everyone, five minute Friday day after Thanksgiving, Heavy Thanksgiving.
- 0:26Speaker 1: I hope that whatever you did yesterday, you were able
- 0:29Speaker 1: to do something that involved some smiling and hopefully a
- 0:35Speaker 1: little bit of time for you and maybe some family,
- 0:40Speaker 1: maybe some friends, maybe some movement. I am reflecting on
- 0:48Speaker 1: the fact that yesterday I did something that I didn't
- 0:53Speaker 1: want to do and it ended up really working out
- 0:56Speaker 1: for me. Yesterday I did the Turkey Trot Walk instead
- 1:02Speaker 1: of the Turkey Trot Run. The Turkey Trot I typically
- 1:06Speaker 1: do every year near where I grew up. It's a
- 1:09Speaker 1: five miler, and although I'm officially throwing my name in
- 1:14Speaker 1: the ring for Tokyo twenty twenty four, I can't believe
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm saying that out loud. I'll be running the Tokyo
- 1:19Speaker 1: Marathon next year. Right now, I am loving on a
- 1:25Speaker 1: little bit of left knee tendon itis. It's something I've
- 1:28Speaker 1: never dealt with before, but it's not exactly something that
- 1:32Speaker 1: I couldn't anticipate considering that I have been dealing with
- 1:38Speaker 1: right foot planter or fasci itis. So if we're looking
- 1:41Speaker 1: at the body and something is wonky with your right side,
- 1:44Speaker 1: then sooner or later, your left side that's been compensating
- 1:47Speaker 1: for it is going to say something. It's gonna Something's
- 1:51Speaker 1: gonna happen, and that's what we're dealing with now. Now
- 1:54Speaker 1: I've talked and worked with the physical therapists that I've
- 1:58Speaker 1: been working with for some time about this issue. I've
- 2:02Speaker 1: seen him and he's not concerned. I have a plan,
- 2:06Speaker 1: similar to when I started gearing up for my last
- 2:09Speaker 1: bout of effort in Berlin, to start this training cycle
- 2:14Speaker 1: predominantly on the bike while I give my left knee
- 2:18Speaker 1: some time to calm down, some time for that inflammation
- 2:21Speaker 1: to subside. Is it frustrating and weird that I'm going
- 2:25Speaker 1: to be running a marathon in fifteen weeks and I'm
- 2:27Speaker 1: not currently running at all. Yes? Do I trust wholeheartedly
- 2:32Speaker 1: in my physical therapist. And I'm not sitting here going
- 2:36Speaker 1: to talk to you about your issues because they are
- 2:38Speaker 1: very different than mine, and I am not a physical
- 2:40Speaker 1: therapist and I'm working one on one with this man
- 2:42Speaker 1: and everything's going to be okay. Also, yes, now you
- 2:47Speaker 1: know where I stand. So you also have any sort
- 2:49Speaker 1: of tendonitis, I encourage you, although I appreciate any sympathies
- 2:54Speaker 1: that you're sending my way, I can't tell you what
- 2:57Speaker 1: to do with your body except that you need to
- 2:59Speaker 1: treat it with great and respect. So that's where we
- 3:02Speaker 1: sit on that. But I tell you all of this
- 3:04Speaker 1: because yesterday I did the turkey trot walk and at
- 3:08Speaker 1: first I was frustrated, and I thought like, maybe I
- 3:11Speaker 1: should just do this trot anyway, It's going to be fine.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And the reality is that if I give my body
- 3:18Speaker 1: the love and respect that it means right now, and
- 3:20Speaker 1: I listen to my physical therapist and I follow the plan,
- 3:24Speaker 1: then I get to do the thing that I want
- 3:26Speaker 1: to do in fifteen weeks, Whereas if I don't follow
- 3:30Speaker 1: the plan and I'm shortsighted, then I would be putting
- 3:34Speaker 1: myself at a disadvantage and I might not get to
- 3:36Speaker 1: go after my ultimate goal. And I tell you this
- 3:40Speaker 1: story because that is something that isn't just applicable, of course,
- 3:44Speaker 1: with moving my body, with running, which candidly ninety nine
- 3:48Speaker 1: point nine percent of the stories that I tell you
- 3:50Speaker 1: here on Hurdle none of them actually have to do
- 3:53Speaker 1: with moving the body at all. There are so many
- 3:57Speaker 1: things that happen in our lives that we want in
- 4:01Speaker 1: the moment, But if we are shortsighted about these things,
- 4:07Speaker 1: then there is a probability, probability that you could be
- 4:13Speaker 1: doing something detrimental in the long run. It's really along
- 4:17Speaker 1: that theme of respond versus react, which I swear is
- 4:21Speaker 1: the theme for me for twenty twenty three. I've talked
- 4:24Speaker 1: about it here on the show, especially on five Minute
- 4:26Speaker 1: Friday before. But responding is you giving yourself a chance
- 4:33Speaker 1: to take a step back and then take action to
- 4:36Speaker 1: wholeheartedly think about how a certain circumstance or a certain
- 4:40Speaker 1: moment can play out in the long term, versus reacting,
- 4:45Speaker 1: maybe based on emotion and doing something in the moment
- 4:49Speaker 1: that you may regret in the long haul. Think of
- 4:51Speaker 1: it in the circumstance of getting an email that makes
- 4:54Speaker 1: you feel some kind of way. Maybe it's a sponsor
- 4:56Speaker 1: pulling out of the show, something that I have had
- 4:59Speaker 1: to deal with certainly over the last almost six years now.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And in that moment, you're frustrated and you want to
- 5:07Speaker 1: say something right. But what happens when you take a
- 5:10Speaker 1: step back and you think about the relationship in the
- 5:14Speaker 1: long haul and I say that, and you know that
- 5:17Speaker 1: light bulb goes off, because sometimes it's the relationship not
- 5:20Speaker 1: only with other people, but also with yourself. You know
- 5:23Speaker 1: how angry I would have been with myself if I
- 5:25Speaker 1: made what could have been considered a selfish choice to
- 5:27Speaker 1: go out and run five miles just for the sake
- 5:30Speaker 1: of running five miles, to say that I did the
- 5:32Speaker 1: Turkey Trot, when in all seriousness that one five mile
- 5:37Speaker 1: run doesn't actually matter. Yeah. So I ended up doing
- 5:44Speaker 1: the walk, and not only was it lovely, but I
- 5:48Speaker 1: got to do it with my mom and it was
- 5:50Speaker 1: an experience that we got to share together. And then
- 5:52Speaker 1: when we were sitting at the diner after, I looked
- 5:55Speaker 1: at her as she said, I am having so much fun. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 1: That's the responding versus the reacting. That's understanding that it's
- 6:05Speaker 1: all happening for you. That's coming to terms with the
- 6:09Speaker 1: fact that there are going to be moments that you
- 6:10Speaker 1: don't get what you want. But that doesn't mean that
- 6:13Speaker 1: you're not getting what you need. I'll say that one
- 6:16Speaker 1: more time. Sometimes when you don't get what you want,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you are actually getting what it is that you need.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So have compassion for that idea, right, have compassion for
- 6:30Speaker 1: the fact that sometimes there are going to be things
- 6:32Speaker 1: that don't go as you had hoped, or as you
- 6:35Speaker 1: had planned, or as you want in that moment. But
- 6:37Speaker 1: that doesn't mean that how life is playing out for
- 6:40Speaker 1: you despite those circumstances isn't happening for you. I have
- 6:47Speaker 1: so much to be grateful for right now, my friends,
- 6:50Speaker 1: my family, my body, everything that I am capable of,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and some days it is harder to trust the process
- 6:56Speaker 1: than others. But trust me, it is just that it's
- 7:01Speaker 1: happening for you. My listener question for you this week,
- 7:07Speaker 1: what is one circumstance lately that you had to respond
- 7:12Speaker 1: versus react and how did that play out for you?
- 7:14Speaker 1: What did you learn from that? What is one circumstance
- 7:18Speaker 1: lately that you had to respond versus react, maybe exercise
- 7:22Speaker 1: a little bit of patience and how did that play
- 7:25Speaker 1: out for you? And now a listener question.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, it's Jackie. I always see you wearing the
- 7:33Speaker 2: cutest white shoes and all of your Insta posts and
- 7:36Speaker 2: I would love to know how do you keep your
- 7:38Speaker 2: white shoes white? I love the new white shoe trend
- 7:41Speaker 2: and running shoes and sneakers, but I cannot ever seem
- 7:44Speaker 2: to keep mine white. Thanks have a great day.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Jackie was so good to see you. Recently, literally, by
- 7:53Speaker 1: complete coincidence, in New York City, this woman was standing
- 7:56Speaker 1: behind me in coffee in a coffee line. She does
- 8:00Speaker 1: not live there. We had had the honor of meeting
- 8:03Speaker 1: before Jackie actually reached out to me. She deals with
- 8:06Speaker 1: MS and she wanted me. I was so flattered by
- 8:11Speaker 1: this opportunity, but I was not in the place to
- 8:14Speaker 1: do this with her. But she asked if I would
- 8:15Speaker 1: consider running the Boston Marathon with her as a guide.
- 8:18Speaker 1: And it is a dream for me to have to
- 8:21Speaker 1: be in the place to do that for someone else,
- 8:23Speaker 1: especially because running has given me so much. But I knew,
- 8:26Speaker 1: because of what I was dealing with with planter fasciitis,
- 8:29Speaker 1: that I wasn't in the place to confidently say that
- 8:31Speaker 1: I could show up for her on that day. Despite that,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I've had the opportunity to meet Jackie many times, so
- 8:37Speaker 1: when she was literally standing behind me in line in
- 8:41Speaker 1: I think we were in no ho It was beside myself. Anyway,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I digress your question, white sneakers. I do something that
- 8:48Speaker 1: you're not supposed to do, and I'm just gonna come
- 8:50Speaker 1: clean with it, no pun intended. I throw my white
- 8:53Speaker 1: sneakers in the washing machine. So what I do is
- 8:55Speaker 1: I take out the laces and I take out the insul,
- 8:58Speaker 1: so the laces and the she go in the washing
- 9:01Speaker 1: machine with just regular tide detergent. The soul stays, the
- 9:04Speaker 1: insole stays out, and I wash them and then I
- 9:07Speaker 1: air dry them with newspaper inside so they keep their shape. Now,
- 9:11Speaker 1: there are tons of different kits and tools and whatnot
- 9:14Speaker 1: that you can use to clean your sneakers without throwing
- 9:17Speaker 1: them in the washing machine. They say not to do
- 9:19Speaker 1: that because it impacts the sole the foam on most
- 9:23Speaker 1: shoes as well as if the shoe has shel I'm
- 9:25Speaker 1: sure it can impact that as well. I would never
- 9:28Speaker 1: do this with a pair of carbon plated shoes, let's
- 9:30Speaker 1: just say that. But for sneakers like my New Balance
- 9:35Speaker 1: ten eighties, I throw those in the washing machine all
- 9:38Speaker 1: the time. My Acex novoblasts those goes. Those go in
- 9:41Speaker 1: the washing machine as well. Things I would not throw
- 9:43Speaker 1: in the washing machine. If you have like a leather sneaker,
- 9:46Speaker 1: like an air Force one, I would not throw those
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the washing machine. With those. Again, it's not scientific.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm sitting there with like a lysol wipe, maybe an
- 9:57Speaker 1: old toothbrush. But yeah, you know, I'm just doing the
- 10:01Speaker 1: best I can to keep these fresh and admittedly probably
- 10:04Speaker 1: getting new sneakers a little bit more often than I
- 10:07Speaker 1: like to admit, and for that I am also both
- 10:09Speaker 1: fortunate and grateful. I hope everyone was able to enjoy
- 10:15Speaker 1: their holiday. I'm sending so much gratitude out into this community.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Thank you for loving a hurdle. And you can always
