- 0:05Speaker 1: Now it's time to catch up with Countryweekly, where we
- 0:08check out news and gossip from the world of country music.
- 0:12I'm your host as always, Ken Dawkins, and I will
- 0:15be reading from various sources found online. As a reminder,
- 0:19RADIOI is a reading service intended for people who are
- 0:21blind or have other disabilities that make it difficult to
- 0:24read printed material. We'll begin with the first article day
- 0:28to June thirtieth, and this is from Peoplecountry dot com
- 0:32or People dot Comcountry. A lot of mishaps and illnesses
- 0:36continue on the concert tours. Willie Nelson cancels concert after
- 0:40extreme weather ruins his gear. Willie Nelson is canceling a
- 0:45major date on his tour after bad weather ruined his equipment.
- 0:49The ninety two year old musician was the headliner for
- 0:52the twenty twenty five Outlaw Music Festival with Bob Dylan,
- 0:55Cheryl Crow and others, until extreme weather caused the anniversary
- 0:58concert event be canceled. The Outlaw Music Festival's tenth anniversary
- 1:03concert events schedule for July first at the Lucky Star
- 1:07Amphitheater in Elreno, Oklahoma, has been canceled due to an
- 1:11unforseeable circumstances statement shared to the festival's official Instagram account.
- 1:16An extreme weather event on the evening of June twenty
- 1:19ninth in Ridgedale, Missouri at thunder Ridge Nature Arena produced
- 1:22heavy rains and high winds, forcing the crowd to evacuate.
- 1:25The statement continued. Because of the weather, organizers said much
- 1:29of the scheduled performers, equipment, and artists' instruments were damaged
- 1:32and waterlogged, making their condition difficult to assess in time
- 1:36to accurately and safely use for tomorrow's show. The decision
- 1:40was made to cancel Tuesday's show to recover and replace
- 1:42whatever was needed to continue additional dates. Blackbird Presents, Lucky Star,
- 1:47Amphitheaterre and DCF Concerts are disappointed to have to cancel
- 1:51the engagement and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that cancelation
- 1:55may cause, the company set, adding that refunds would be issued.
- 2:00Elson shared the same message to his Instagram account. His
- 2:03comment section was filled with fans asking if Trigger, his
- 2:05famous guitar, was okay after the extreme weather incident. A
- 2:09rep tells people the Trigger is safe after all. The
- 2:13Outlaw Music Festival is North America's largest touring music festival,
- 2:17bringing musical legends and dedicated fans together for live songs,
- 2:21food and drink shopping, and creating an unforgettable experience. For
- 2:25the twenty twenty four show, Nelson shared a statement in
- 2:28a press release to express his excitement regarding forthcoming concerts.
- 2:32He later missed the opening show due to not feeling well.
- 2:36The Always on My Mind singer and other artists included
- 2:38on the twenty twenty five lineup are expected to resume
- 2:41the show in Austin, Texas on July fourth. Well, then
- 2:45it's Post Malone's turn. Post Malone suffers on stage fall
- 2:49while attempting to toast fan mid concert. Post Malone is
- 2:53falling for his fans, and a fan TikTok shared on Sunday,
- 2:56June twenty second. The Circle singer walked up the stage
- 2:59catwalk performing his in Blake Shelton's song Somebody Pour Me
- 3:02a Drink during his State Farm Stadium concert in Glendale, Arizona. However,
- 3:07when he approached the fan recording the clip and attempts
- 3:10to toast them, Malone twenty nine falls forward as a
- 3:13piece of the stage gives way and over he goes,
- 3:16I'm so sorry, Austin, I love you such an amazing show.
- 3:19The fan captured the video, tagging the artist. Fans flooded
- 3:23the comments section of the video, hoping that Malone was
- 3:25all right after the misstep and fall. Despite the nasty spill,
- 3:28Malone's tour seemingly continued without a hitch, carrying on as scheduled.
- 3:33This isn't the first time the Sunflower singer took a
- 3:35tumble on stage. Back in September twenty two, Malone fell
- 3:39through a trap door and appeared to hit his chests
- 3:41during his twelve Carrot tour stop in Saint Louis, Missouri.
- 3:45He carried on in the performance following the spill, as
- 3:48manager revealed via Instagram that he suffered bruised ribs from
- 3:51the incident. He's updated he has updated his fans on
- 3:55a video on ax after leaving the hospital after falling
- 3:57through a big ass hole on stage. Everything things good.
- 4:00They gave me some pain meds and everything. We can
- 4:02keep on kicking ass on the tour. Days later, Malone
- 4:06postponed his Boston show, still in significant pain. That October,
- 4:10Malone twisted his ankle in one of the holes on
- 4:12his stage during his Atlantic concert, and then he's currently
- 4:17wrapping up his Big Ass Stadium tour with Jelly Roll.
- 4:20The musicians who collaborated on the song Losers from Malone's
- 4:23f one Trillion album began their trek in late April
- 4:25and Salt Lake City and have made stops in Philly,
- 4:28New York, Las Vegas, Dallas, Atlanta, Toronto, and other cities.
- 4:32They performed their final show for the US leg at
- 4:34San Francisco's Oracle Park on July first. Then, as we
- 4:39move over to countryliving dot com with an article dated
- 4:42June twenty eighth, we find out that Casey Musgraves reveals
- 4:46she's in a lot of pain and canceled shows. Country
- 4:50music star Casey Musgraves has been forced to do something
- 4:53no singer wants to do with their fans. The Golden
- 4:56Hour singer was recently forced to hit pause on her
- 4:59current tour following a painful injury sustained during a recent
- 5:02performance in Mexico. The Grammy winning singer, who prioritizes being
- 5:07transparent with her fan base, took two x to share
- 5:10that she suffered a broken rib after slipping on wet tile.
- 5:14So I'm in Mexico with a broken rib. Muskraves wrote
- 5:18candidly alongside a screenshot of her X Ray show in
- 5:21the Break Wednesday night. It was raining and I was
- 5:23running to grab some towels and had an extremely hard
- 5:26fall on some very slick tile. I didn't see. Thankful,
- 5:30I didn't smack my head, but I landed very very
- 5:32hard on my back left rib cage and broke number six.
- 5:36The thirty six year old stars certainly didn't hold back
- 5:38and describing the pain and frustration that followed, this is
- 5:42no joke, coming a lot of pain in doing anything.
- 5:44It's extremely difficult, but I'm managing and being well taken
- 5:48care of. As a result of her injury, the singer
- 5:50was unfortunately unable to perform her highly anticipated show at
- 5:55the Riemann Auditorium in Nashville. There's no physical way I
- 5:58can get on a plane back to Nashville, she explained
- 6:01in her social media post. The concert has since been
- 6:04rescheduled for a week later, and ticket holders were encouraged
- 6:07to hold on to their tickets for the new date.
- 6:11I'm extremely bummed to have to reschedule, as I've been
- 6:14looking forward to this for months. But there's literally no option.
- 6:17Casey added, I'm so sorry for the inconvenience. Fans and
- 6:22fellow artists have been flooding musgraves social media, of course,
- 6:24with messages of support like sending you all our love
- 6:27for safe and speedy recovery and oh God, I'm wishing
- 6:30you a speedy recovery. I broke a rib a few
- 6:32years ago, and You're right, the pain is no joke.
- 6:35There's still no word yet on whether any additional dates
- 6:38on her tour will be affected, but here's hoping that
- 6:41Casey takes all the time she needs to rest and recover.
- 6:46Moving on to countrynow dot com with the first article
- 6:49dated June thirtieth, Corey Kent snags second number one at
- 6:53country radio with This Heart. Corey Kent just notched another
- 6:57major milestone. On Monday, it was announced that the Oklahoma born,
- 7:02Texas based country artist has officially scored his second number
- 7:05one at country radio with his emotionally charged single This Heart.
- 7:10The track, which has already racked up more than seventy
- 7:12five million streams, now sits atop both the Country air
- 7:16Check Media Base and Billboard Country Airplay charts. Kent had
- 7:20been eagerly counting down the days for this moment to
- 7:22finally come to fruition. Just two days before the milestone
- 7:26was official, the rising country star took to social media
- 7:28to commemorate the feat. He wrote, Damn, this Heart is
- 7:31about to hit number one on country radio. I can't
- 7:35believe it. Ever since the song's released in January twenty
- 7:39twenty four, fans haven't been able to stop singing detention
- 7:41filled tune alongside the true power that lies within Kent's vocals.
- 7:46This Heart was written by Thomas Archer, Blake Bollinger, Jacob Hackworth,
- 7:50and Michael Taylor, and produced by frequent collaborator Chris Farren.
- 7:54The opening guitars from set the tone for Kent's aching
- 7:57delivery as he dives deep into the pain of heartbreak.
- 8:01Listeners follow along as Kent strives to release the pain
- 8:03felt deep within his heart, letting frustration flow throughout every lyric.
- 8:07The hard hitting storyline is further elevated by the energy
- 8:10of the electric guitar riffs and passionate drum beats. Corey
- 8:14Kent's latest accomplishment with This Heart follows the massive success
- 8:18of his breakout hit Wild as Her, which went triple
- 8:21platinum and hit number one on country radio and served
- 8:23as the lead single off his major label album debut, Blacktop.
- 8:27Before that, his second single, Something's Going to Kill Me,
- 8:30became a career standout when it earned an RIAA Gold certification.
- 8:34Despite not cracking the top forty. In the midst of
- 8:38his chart topping street, Kent continues building momentum on the road.
- 8:41He's currently headlining shows across the country, including two sold
- 8:45out hometown dates at Caine's Ballroom in Tulsa. He recently
- 8:49wrapped up a run with John Party on the Honky
- 8:51Tonk Hollywood Tour as a slew of fair and festival
- 8:54dates booked for the summer, and recently got to play
- 8:57his first stadium show while opening for Morgan in Houston.
- 9:01He'll reunite with Wallen again at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts,
- 9:06for back to back shows on August twenty second and
- 9:09August twenty third. Next, Cole Swindell opens up about the
- 9:14long road to his new album, Spanish Moss. Cole Swindell
- 9:18has finally unleashed his new album, Spanish Moss, and he's
- 9:21getting real about the recording process, the pressure he felt
- 9:24when making the album, and how taking a step back
- 9:27to live his life ultimately made him realize he wasn't
- 9:30quite finished. During an open and honest conversation with members
- 9:33of the Nashville media this week, Swindell admitted that the
- 9:36album making process had its share of ups and downs.
- 9:40This album, for me love it this much, it sure
- 9:42didn't feel like that the whole time. I'm just being honest,
- 9:45he confessed, just going into making an album after Stereotype,
- 9:49which she had me at Head's Carolina, never Say Never
- 9:51in Landy Wilson, I mean, come on, you just don't
- 9:54want to think about that at the time. You just
- 9:56want to enjoy it. Recognizing the pressure he felt coming
- 10:01off what was undoubtedly the biggest album of his career
- 10:03so far, the Georgia native also realized, hey, this album's
- 10:06not going to make itself. Just before getting engaged and
- 10:09beginning to plan his weddings, Swindell says he went into
- 10:11the studio with Zach Crowell and cut seven or eight songs. Well,
- 10:15he knew there was more work to be done. Swindell
- 10:18says he was happy to get a start on the project.
- 10:20That's when life happened and making an album was no
- 10:23longer his first priority. I think after those songs, I
- 10:26kind of put the album on the back burner. Not
- 10:28on purpose, he pointed out. I've waited a long time
- 10:31to just live life and not have to worry about
- 10:33that for a minute. And I think getting engaged, getting
- 10:36married and just doing that, and then finally waking up
- 10:39and saying I'm not finished. It's not even close to finish.
- 10:42So that's kind of when it all started. Back getting
- 10:45back into the album molds, Twindell spent time writing and
- 10:47combing through songs that were pitched to him. He says
- 10:50it was an eye opener realizing just how much work
- 10:52had to be done to complete the project, a true
- 10:56labor of love. Swindell poured everything into the project, determined
- 10:59to ensure that it had the right songs, and to
- 11:02his surprise, some of the most important tracks came together
- 11:05just in the nick of time. I just knew it
- 11:07wasn't quite there. It just didn't cover all the bases yet,
- 11:10and it wasn't ready, he explained. And I think, as
- 11:12frustrating as it was, I think the moment it all
- 11:15kind of came together. A lot of these songs came
- 11:17the last week before, well a day before he went
- 11:20into the studio to cut it the last time, and
- 11:22it's two albums in a row that that's happened, and
- 11:25they were some of the biggest songs of the whole thing.
- 11:28Although the process didn't unfold the way Swindell initially imagined,
- 11:31he admits he's grateful for how it all came together
- 11:34in the end, just another reminder that I'm not in
- 11:36control of my plan. That's not how it's going to happen,
- 11:39and it usually works out a lot better than I
- 11:41had planned initially. But finally I got it all and
- 11:44I'm like, I'll go play this for anybody anywhere. I'm
- 11:47proud of it. Among the album's twenty one tracks is
- 11:50the chart topping single Forever to Me and the previously
- 11:53released fan favorite Kill a Prayer. Songs like Left to
- 11:58Get Right and Bottom of It Would Click become the
- 12:00soundtrack to fans Saturday Nights, but it's the tender moments
- 12:04like the heartfelt Dale Junior and the grief stricken Heads
- 12:07Up Heaven where Swindell seems to shine the most. After
- 12:11previously releasing You Should Be Here in honor of his
- 12:13late father, Swindell says he wanted to find a way
- 12:15to honor his late mom as well, and that's how
- 12:17Heads Up Heaven came to be. I know she since
- 12:21I moved up here, she couldn't believe anything that was happening.
- 12:24It's just to see the shock on her face. I'm like,
- 12:26I know, trust me, I feel the same. But I
- 12:29think when I had the title heads Up Heaven, the
- 12:31whole point of it was a lyric in the song
- 12:33as I guess, I just wanted you to know what
- 12:35you're getting just giving them heads up, she's an angel,
- 12:39he explained. That kind of was the whole idea behind it.
- 12:43He continued, one of my favorite lines I've ever been
- 12:45part of writing is she was always telling me about you.
- 12:48Now I bet she's telling you about me. That's why
- 12:51I write songs, and even the sad ones, those seem
- 12:53to be the ones that mean the most. I'm cool
- 12:56with that, and that's why I love country music. But
- 12:58I can't have a set full of them songs, so
- 13:01I like to have some fun ones in there too,
- 13:03But those are I really think who I am and
- 13:05the storytelling part. Twenty twenty five is shaping up to
- 13:09be quite a year for Swindelle. In addition to releasing
- 13:11his new album and expecting his first child with his wife, Courtney,
- 13:15the multi platinum selling superstar and multi ACM Award winner
- 13:19is also gearing up to hit the road on his
- 13:21headlining Happy Hour Sad to Her. The track, which features
- 13:24special guests Priscilla Block, Logan Crosby, and Grayland James, will
- 13:28kick off on September fourth and Toledo and continue through
- 13:31October twenty sixth, which stops across Georgia, Colorado, Washington, Florida,
- 13:36and Moore. Next, Ella Langley and Hardy deliver a savage
- 13:41twist and highly anticipated new song. Ella Langley had us
- 13:46all fooled. Based on the title and the teasers Langley
- 13:49has been dropping on social media, it was easy to
- 13:52believe that her new single Never Met Anyone Like You
- 13:54featuring Hardy, was going to be her sweetest love song yet.
- 13:59But with today's release, we finally get the full picture,
- 14:01and it's not the love story we expected. What starts
- 14:05off sounding like a romantic confession quickly unravels into something
- 14:08incredibly heartbreaking. Langley's usual gritty vocals give a more soft
- 14:12and tender appearance than the beginning of the narrative as
- 14:15she recounts how incredible her love interest is and how
- 14:18easy he was accepted into her life. She sings, all
- 14:22of my friends can't quit talking about you. They've never
- 14:24been like this before. The way that you turn every
- 14:27head that's around you, the second you walk through the
- 14:29door safe to say that you made me insane, even crazy,
- 14:33got my whole world upside down. And I know that
- 14:35you know, I kind of know a lot of folks,
- 14:37But honey, there just ain't no doubt. Langley appears to
- 14:42be falling head over heels for this man. She makes
- 14:44him out to be a gentleman who shares her love
- 14:46of music, is kind to his mama, and has a
- 14:48big heart, and fully states you're one in a million.
- 14:51One she hits the chorus. Unfortunately, what we were convinced
- 14:55was a fairy tale love story by this point suddenly
- 14:57comes to screeching halt as Langley drops a true bomb.
- 15:01Turns out that this person is in fact one in
- 15:03a million, not because of how amazing he is, but
- 15:05instead it's because of the terrible actions that he's committed.
- 15:08After convincing Langley's character that he was the one, the
- 15:12real story comes out as Langley reveals, because you said
- 15:15it was us till the end. Then you went and
- 15:17hooked up with my friend and you blamed it on me,
- 15:20left me crying in pieces. Damn, what a piece. I've
- 15:23never met anyone like you. I've never met anyone like you.
- 15:27All the snippets the Alabama native shared across social media
- 15:30leading up to the release had fans sharing the lyrics
- 15:32with loved ones and eagerly awaiting the heartfelt tune to
- 15:35be added to her catalog. Today, she finally set the
- 15:38record straight, and she wrote, this isn't a love song.
- 15:42In fact, the song serves as a clear warning about
- 15:44how easy it can be to fall fast and hard
- 15:46for someone's charm, only to later realize it was all
- 15:49in act. This clever country track, with an edgy tone
- 15:52elevated Hardy's vocals and a perfectly executed curve ball, was
- 15:56penned by Langley, with Hardy and Jordan Schmidt. Speaking on
- 16:00how proud he is to have had a hand in
- 16:02writing this track, Hardy shared, this is one of my
- 16:04favorite songs I've been a part of in a really
- 16:06long time. I love the craft of songwriting, so anytime
- 16:10that we get to have a twist at the end
- 16:11of the song. It's my favorite thing in the world.
- 16:15It was right. That wasn't even supposed to happen, which
- 16:17is a beautiful thing. We were caught off guard by
- 16:20our own creativity. Everybody in the room crushed it that day.
- 16:23I can't wait to see people's reactions because I really
- 16:26do think it's one of the coolest songs I've ever
- 16:28been a part of. I'm really excited for it. The
- 16:31Powerhouse Songstress is currently on tour as direct support on
- 16:34Riley Green's North American Damn Country Music Tour, and we'll
- 16:37join Morgan Wallen later this month or this summer for
- 16:40eight stadium shows on as I'm the Problem Tour. Additionally,
- 16:45Langley recently announced that she is extending her sold out
- 16:47Still hung Over headline tour this fall. The newly added
- 16:51dates and her full set list of tour can be
- 16:53found at Ellalangley dot com. Now on to saving country music.
- 16:57With the first article dated July fir the Apostles Family
- 17:02the Billy Strings Moment in Lexington, Kentucky. In an editor's note,
- 17:07this is actually a review and it's a contribution from
- 17:10a Billy Strings devotee named Willie Kaufman recalling his experience
- 17:14seeing Billy Strings perform at Kentucky's rupp Arena on June
- 17:18twentieth and twenty first. The show's occurred after the passing
- 17:21of Billy's mother, Deborah Apostle. By now, the story of
- 17:25what William Apostle, better known as Billy Strings, was going
- 17:27through that Friday night. As he walked on to stage
- 17:30and Lexington is well known walking out to a darkened
- 17:34stage for the first of a sold out to night,
- 17:36Ronnie delivered the heartbreaking news through tears that his mother,
- 17:39Deborah Apostle, had passed away unexpectedly. Billy asked the crowd
- 17:44not for silence, but for cheers for his mom. With
- 17:46tears streaming down his upturned face, he sobbed and the
- 17:49crowd roared. What came next for those who filled Kentucky's
- 17:53Basketball Mecca was devastating and magical. As Billy and his
- 17:57bandmates began playing, his voice cracking slightly, the crowd did
- 18:01as he asked, We let him lean on us. He
- 18:04fell deeper into the music. Huge cheers of the kind
- 18:07normally reserved for end of show favorite songs or encores,
- 18:10met Billy at every transition, adding an instant boost to
- 18:13the already high powered bluegrass he plays nightly, wiping tears
- 18:17from our eyes. We danced and sang, begging him to
- 18:20feel the love we are sending him and again a reminder.
- 18:23This is a review from somebody named Will Kaufman in
- 18:26Saving Country Music about a concert in Lexington. So, as
- 18:30he says, we watched nervously, so did Billy, Failing on banjo,
- 18:33Jarred Walker mandolin, Royal Massot on bass, and Alex Hargrave's fiddle.
- 18:38We all watched as our hero continued to cry, play
- 18:40and sing. Thank you very much, he said humbly, after
- 18:43a scorching version of Bronze Back. These thank yous, which
- 18:46came after several songs over the two night run, are
- 18:49not typical for Billy, and only with the benefit of
- 18:52time is it clear that he was thanking us for
- 18:53being there for him. Again and again. As Billy broke
- 18:57into the beatles, here comes the Sun, it was almost
- 18:59too much to bear for all of us, especially Billy.
- 19:02His voice was timid when he sang the first It's
- 19:04all right. The crowd, singing louder by the second, supported
- 19:07his every word. By the time the song concluded, the
- 19:10gap between artists and audience seemed nearly imperceptible. We sang
- 19:14for him, and he sang for us. Another Beatles cover,
- 19:18Rocky Raccoon, followed, as did many legendary Billy fan favorites.
- 19:22We cried and sang along as he wished to be trained,
- 19:26feeling no pain, having no heart, and somewhere along the way,
- 19:30love began to overtake tragedy. This is the best I've
- 19:33felt all day, Billy said, after a set break. In
- 19:36two songs, we love and appreciate you. More love from
- 19:39the crowd, More magic from Billy. Poignant lyrics about loss
- 19:42and family pulled us all together into a warm sing along,
- 19:45supported by his and the band's incredible playing. When he
- 19:49introduced Elderly Woman behind the Counter in a Small Town
- 19:52as a song his mom taught him in fourth grade,
- 19:55the moment could not have been more full. The ripping
- 19:58version of End of the Rainbow provided the evening 's climax,
- 20:01sending the crowd into a dancing and singing frenzy. Billy's
- 20:05song Enough to Leave is about loss and death, As
- 20:07the first notes of this ballad came from his guitar.
- 20:10A hush went over the crowd, except for the sobs,
- 20:12for a woman we didn't know, and for a man
- 20:14we like we think we do, for ourselves, for our
- 20:18parents and our children and friends, for loss unspoken or unrealized,
- 20:21for happiness, for sadness, and for Billy. Night Too began
- 20:27slowly thanks to some testicular difficulties with Royal's bass, but
- 20:31by the time the first banjo solo kicked on online,
- 20:35the crowd was in end concert form, clearly still buzzing
- 20:38from the night before and willing to do anything we
- 20:40could for Billy. We sang every chorus, danced and loved.
- 20:44It's been a doozy, he said just before the set break.
- 20:47We appreciate it more than you could ever know. A
- 20:50mystical electricity ran through the arena during that first set
- 20:53of the second night. Billy seemed happy and loose, evidenced
- 20:56by an extra funky lumpy bean, pollen dirt, and a
- 21:00perfect Everything's the same and the set setlist. Officionado's will
- 21:04acknowledge that the ten tunes and two encores he played
- 21:07after the break contained some of his best songs. Nugs
- 21:11dot Net viewers and listeners may admit having goosebumps after
- 21:15Heartbeat in America and in the morning Light began the
- 21:18show's closing set, But only those present can understand how
- 21:22linked Billy, the band and his audience were during their
- 21:25last hours together. It's been very special here, Billy said,
- 21:28after his first cover of Tangled Up in Blue since
- 21:31twenty twenty one put the show train in runway mode.
- 21:34He added more thank yous. The crowd screamed and sang
- 21:37and danced their gratitude back to him. Slow train did
- 21:40nothing of the sort, as the gathering momentum created a
- 21:42giddy intensity, and when Billy and friends walked up to
- 21:46a single microphone for the anthem Richard Petty, some fifteen
- 21:50thousand voices became one as we committed to wake up
- 21:53and change our ways one of these days, meet me
- 21:57at the Creek. A musical rocket ship wrapped up the
- 21:59blue Grass Journey is a Billy fan favorite. Those who
- 22:02experienced the just over twenty minute version played last Saturday
- 22:05night may spend the rest of our lives arguing that
- 22:08that iteration rises above all others. None of us wanted
- 22:13to leave that second night. We knew he had seen
- 22:15and done something extraordinary. To leave that place was to
- 22:18go into the world where death and life make us
- 22:20very weary. For a June moment in Lexington, love was
- 22:23greater than tragedy, and family did what family does best,
- 22:26love unconditionally. We let Billy Strings lean on us. He
- 22:29thanked and overwhelmed us. We will none of us ever
- 22:32be the same next. Kentucky Headhunters on fifty plus years
- 22:38and music ahead of Master Musicians fest as we know,
- 22:42the Kentucky Headhunters is a chosen name from one of
- 22:44the bluegrass states, most humble, beloved and celebrated country, blues
- 22:48and Southern rock family bands of all time. They probably
- 22:51hail from the small farm town of Edmonton, Kentucky, and
- 22:55from a state that is undoubtedly rich in its contributions
- 22:57of some of the greatest songwriters in recording artartists on
- 23:00the worldwide stage. You know the name Nilready, Bill Loretta,
- 23:04John Dwight, Ricky, Patty Keith Tyler, Chris Tergel. Now add
- 23:08the Kentucky Headhunters to that list in your mind from
- 23:11this day forward, says saving country music the core foundation
- 23:15of the Headhunters. His brothers Richard and Fred Young, cousin
- 23:18Greg Martin and friend Doug Phelps. Richard and Fred first
- 23:22began playing music together back in nineteen sixty seven on
- 23:25their farm. We've always been interested in rock music, even
- 23:29when we were kids, before we even started playing, Fred
- 23:32Young recalls our cousin Anthony Kenny also played, and the
- 23:35three of us started a band back in sixty seven
- 23:37called Truce. It wasn't until nineteen eighty six when the
- 23:42Kentucky Headhunters namesake was first established. The Young brothers, along
- 23:47with cousin Greg Martin, recruited Doug Phelps to make up
- 23:49the core of the band as we know it today.
- 23:52Doug's brother Ricky Lee Phelps joined the band briefly as well.
- 23:56Over the years, the Headhunters have built their musical reputation
- 23:59and method methodologies by doing things their own way and
- 24:03not bowing down to standard industry norms formulas for success,
- 24:08and instead remaining true to their rock and blues musical
- 24:10roots throughout their long standing careers. Yet, despite doing things
- 24:15their own way, the Headhunters did find mainstream success with
- 24:18their landmark nineteen eighty nine album Picking On Nashville, recorded
- 24:22its sound Shop in Nashville and released by Mercury Records
- 24:26after being signed by President Harold shed The album would
- 24:30thrust the band from the Kentucky underground and into the mainstream. Catchy,
- 24:34hook laden songs, which genre hopped between country blues and
- 24:38southern rock, made up the album, leading with their self
- 24:41written feel good anthem doomas Walker. Clever renditions of Bill
- 24:45Monroe's walked Softly on This Heart of Mine and Don
- 24:48Gibson's O Lonesome Me propelled the album and produced several
- 24:51top forty placements on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, including
- 24:56a top ten skipping to twenty thirteen. The head Hunters
- 24:59were inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, in
- 25:02honor they especially cherished because they were being inducted into
- 25:06the same class as two of their other in state
- 25:08musical heroes and influences, Exile and Jackie DeShannon. In twenty
- 25:13twenty one, they released their thirteenth studio album, That's a Fact, Jack,
- 25:16which contained songs written most entirely by the Headhunters and
- 25:20recorded at Barrack Studios in Glasgow, Kentucky. That Headhunters also
- 25:25had been waiting in the wings for more than thirty
- 25:27years to receive an invitation to perform on the Grand
- 25:29Old Opry Stage, which finally happened on December fourth in
- 25:33twenty twenty one. In the early nineties, when the head
- 25:36Hunters released their debut album Pickin' on Nashville, Bill Monroe
- 25:40approached Royo Akoff about having the group perform on the
- 25:43Opry Stage. Now, the Kentucky Headhunters are looking ahead to
- 25:47their upcoming performance in the thirty second annual Master Musicians Festival.
- 25:51This will take place on July eleventh and twelfth in Somerset.
- 25:55They'll be headlining along with Jamie Johnson and a slew
- 25:58of both seasoned and up in coming artists like Buffalo
- 26:01Wobbs and The Price, Hill Hustle, Hunter Flynn, The Creakers,
- 26:04Cody Lee Mease, among others. Master Musicians Festival has an
- 26:09established track record of bringing some of music's masters to
- 26:12its stages over the years, and always keeps its focus
- 26:15on giving artists hailing from the bluegrass state a place
- 26:17on their stages. It's played host to the likes of
- 26:20John Prine, Willie Nelson, Jason Isbel, Steve Earl, Nitty Gritty
- 26:24Dirt Band, Billy Strings, Winona Dwight, Yoakum Old Crow Medicine Show,
- 26:28Nappy Roots, among a slew of other established and up
- 26:31and coming singer, songwriters and recording artists of all musical genres.
- 26:36Independently operated and ran by a nonprofit board led by
- 26:39executive director Tiffany Finley, the festival grounds are nestled within
- 26:43the campus of a small community college, tucked away in
- 26:46the heart as we know of southern Kentucky's Cumberland Valley.
- 26:49As fellow Kentucky writer and journalist Hunter S. Thompson once wrote,
