- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermind, set coach, creative strategist, and also
- 0:09happen to be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. I'm in the garage with the seeds
- 0:31very early because when I woke up this morning, it was 37°.
- 0:37And I'm like, are you kidding me?
- 0:39Acting like I'm surprised when I'm not surprised because I'm a
- 0:43human being. I respond to the weather every
- 0:45day. We go through this every spring,
- 0:48every single spring. And while it feels like it's all
- 0:52over the place and unexpected and I get all reactive like Oh
- 0:56my God I I can't believe it. The truth is I completely
- 1:01understand exactly what this is. It's the same thing all the
- 1:04freaking time. And every spring it shows up
- 1:08this way. So me being surprised is just a
- 1:13natural human thing because what we do is we react instead of
- 1:18responding. And I work very hard to control,
- 1:22as you know, that response. I talk about that a lot, saying,
- 1:27you know, manage your emotions. You've got to understand where
- 1:30your emotions are coming from. There are certain things that
- 1:32you can learn from them. Lots of things, tons of things
- 1:35you can learn from them, but if you are in reaction instead of
- 1:39response, it's not going to be the same thing.
- 1:41So it's very important to remember that you want to do the
- 1:46right thing by responding instead of reacting.
- 1:49So I just want to give everybody a little reminder today.
- 1:52When you react, it's it's impulsive, it's black, it comes
- 1:55right out. Like when I put the dogs out and
- 1:57I put my hand out the door, I was like, no, why is it so cold?
- 2:00Because immediately in my head, I was thinking about all those
- 2:04plum blossoms sitting out there that have just formed little
- 2:08tiny plums. And what does that mean?
- 2:10And does it mean that they're going to all die and I'm going
- 2:12to not have plums? And I'm thinking, I felt like
- 2:14the kid from A Christmas Story when he was like talking about
- 2:17how the Bumpus dogs ate all of the Turkey and no chicken a la
- 2:22King, no chicken sandwiches. And he was running through the
- 2:25list. That's what I was doing with my
- 2:26plum scenario in my head. So I was in complete and total
- 2:31reaction and I was, I was completely engulfed in it.
- 2:37I will admit that my brain went and it was, I just woken up.
- 2:41What do you do when you wake up? You take care of your dogs
- 2:44immediately because if you don't, they stare at you and
- 2:46make you feel guilty as a human that you're doing inaccurate job
- 2:50taking care of them. So the dogs always get cared for
- 2:52first before me for anything else.
- 2:54The cat is like ambivalent. She could care less at that
- 2:56point. But the dogs immediate,
- 2:59especially Beaufort, it's like, let me go, I need to go outside
- 3:03right now. So I, I was in complete and
- 3:08total reaction. I shut the door, I turned
- 3:10around. I was like, OK, let's respond,
- 3:13calm down. Let's see what the weather is.
- 3:15So I opened the weather app 37°. OK, it didn't freeze, so that
- 3:20was good. Immediately talking to Google,
- 3:23trying to figure out what's the freeze temperature on these
- 3:25Japanese plums. When will they lose their little
- 3:28tiny beauty, You know, and they're like, O28 is the lowest
- 3:33it can really go 32. It's a risk, but it's unlikely
- 3:36because they're very good at it. They expect that kind of thing
- 3:40happening in the spring, which is like, well, the tree expects
- 3:43this, this is amazing. So why am I flipping out?
- 3:47So I start to calm down and I can get more into reaction mode
- 3:51and saying, OK, is this a one day deal?
- 3:53How many days are we looking at it being cold?
- 3:55Well, apparently by the weekend we're going to be back up into
- 3:59the 70s, which is fine and wonderful.
- 4:02But between now and then it's going to be colder at night, but
- 4:06not horrible. It'll be in the 40s.
- 4:09OK, tonight it will be 37 again, but then we will be in the 40s.
- 4:13So, OK, we, but during the day it's going to go up Today, I
- 4:16think the high is going to be 50.
- 4:18So I, I can take all this information in and I can plan a
- 4:23reaction. OK, Do I want to cover the tree
- 4:26tonight? Do I want to know, you know, is
- 4:28there something else I can do? Should I heavily water it today
- 4:31so that it has that? Because if you water them, it,
- 4:35it, the soil does not get as frozen as it will with its, if
- 4:39it's dry. Dry soil is actually more
- 4:42dangerous than wet soil when it comes to freezing.
- 4:45So that's why you'll see farmers turn, turn the water on
- 4:48sometimes because even if it coats the leaves, it's an
- 4:51insulation, believe it or not, rather than just the frost
- 4:54bearing it down on it. So all different kinds of little
- 4:57tricks. But that's reaction instead of,
- 5:00you know, that's not, that's response rather than reaction.
- 5:03And I have to stay in that space of response.
- 5:07So by the time this whole thing went through, I was like, well,
- 5:09now I know what I'm talking about in my podcast today
- 5:12because I just wasted 15 minutes of my life flipping between
- 5:16these two toggle switches in my brain.
- 5:18And the lesson is you can pull yourself out because guess what?
- 5:22It only took, yes, it took 15 minutes, but it only took 15
- 5:26minutes. And it isn't going to suck up
- 5:27the rest of my day. So try really hard to focus on
- 5:31reaction or response and pull yourself back from the edge.
- 5:34Cut down on the time. Save yourself the aggravation.
- 5:38All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and pray
- 5:40for the plums. I'll see you tomorrow.
- 5:43Bye.
