- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show His love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk and looking forward to being in
- 0:18Isaiah 43 with you today. Let's begin reading in Isaiah 43
- 0:24and verse #1 now. This is what Yahweh says, the
- 0:29one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel.
- 0:33Do not fear, for I have redeemed you, I have purchased you back,
- 0:37I have called you by your name. You are mine.
- 0:41When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and
- 0:45the rivers will not overwhelm you.
- 0:47When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, and
- 0:51the flame will not burn you, for I am Yahweh, your God, the Holy
- 0:56One of Israel, and your Savior. What a wonderful truth that we
- 1:01read even here in these first starting verses, that because of
- 1:05God's love for us, we don't have to have fear.
- 1:08We are personally known, cared for, and loved.
- 1:12We have been bought back here. Israel had been brought back
- 1:16from the nations even as they had been exiled out, that God
- 1:21was going to bring them back. And we have even a better
- 1:24redemption than restoration of national identity.
- 1:29The New Testament would tell us that we have been redeemed.
- 1:32We've been bought with the precious blood of Christ, that
- 1:35God gave his life for us so that not just that we could go back
- 1:40and live in a land where our national identity would exist,
- 1:45but so that we would have a restored relationship with God.
- 1:49We would have an eternal home with him.
- 1:51We would have everlasting life. That we would not experience the
- 1:55condemnation that our sins had earned, but instead we would be
- 2:00restored to God entirely. And then I love there some of
- 2:04those verse, some of those phrases in verse #2 of God's
- 2:09protection of us not from difficulties, but His protection
- 2:14of us through difficulties. So we read this.
- 2:17When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
- 2:20You can think of the children of Israel.
- 2:22They might have wished that God had just, you know, opened a
- 2:26hole in the ground and the Egyptian army would have fallen
- 2:30in, or that there would be, you know, like with Sodom and
- 2:33Gomorrah, fire and brimstone that fell from heaven onto the
- 2:37Egyptian army. But that's not the way that God
- 2:39delivered them. He didn't say I'm going to take
- 2:42away the difficulty of either Pharaoh's army or the Red Sea.
- 2:46He says I'm going to open it up for you and you will walk
- 2:49through. And then as Pharaoh's army tries
- 2:52to pursue, then those same difficulties, the Red Sea, that
- 2:58did not end up destroying the Israelites.
- 3:01It did end up destroying the Israelites sole enemies, their
- 3:06former imprisoners and and captive captivators.
- 3:11I know the captors. Thank you.
- 3:13You guys are like, listen, Brian, you're not on the ball
- 3:15today. I know it.
- 3:16I know it. We're we're still working on it
- 3:18says when you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched
- 3:21and the flame will not burn you. You can think of the three
- 3:26Hebrew children, the the account that's given in Daniel of
- 3:30Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, or is we better know them,
- 3:34Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And as they were in the fire,
- 3:38God could have just had anyone that was going to throw them
- 3:42into the fire be burned up and they would never have to go in
- 3:46the fire. That would be the story that we
- 3:48would want. We would want God.
- 3:50I never want to go through financial hardships or I never
- 3:54want to go through the loss of a spouse or an estranged
- 4:00relationship with a child. Maybe that's far away from you.
- 4:04We would never want to go through the difficulties, but
- 4:07God says in the difficulties you get to see my personal care and
- 4:12love and power exercised on your behalf and for you.
- 4:17And what a joy that that is. Verse number, last part of verse
- 4:22#3 Then God talks about the fact that He did not do this
- 4:27redeeming work, this bringing back this people into the land
- 4:32and restoring their national identity and sovereignty.
- 4:35He did not do that for the other nations, that other nations as
- 4:40they experienced destruction. It was a destruction from which
- 4:44there would not be a recovery and there would not be certainly
- 4:48an everlasting recovery like there would be for Israel.
- 4:53So he says I have given Egypt as a ransom for you, Kush and Seba
- 4:58in your place. These are kind of synonym names
- 5:02for Egypt. Think like America, the US, you
- 5:08know, some of those types of things would be one way to think
- 5:11about Egypt. Kush Seba, God says when Egypt
- 5:15goes under like that's it for Egypt.
- 5:19Israel, even though they have not been more righteous than any
- 5:24other nation, I am going to, because of my particular care
- 5:27and love for them, do something for this nation that I am not
- 5:31doing for any other nation. Obviously the purpose of all of
- 5:34this would be to bring the Messiah Jesus into the land.
- 5:39And even as Israel had some amount of sovereignty and self
- 5:44rule under Roman occupation that then they were able to try
- 5:49Jesus, condemn him and then bring him to the Romans to say
- 5:54we need you to kill him. Because Rome did not allow the
- 5:58the Jewish Sanhedrin to execute the death penalty on
- 6:04individuals. So all of this is for the
- 6:07purpose of Jesus. It's not just here's this one
- 6:11ethnicity that God really loves and everyone else it's fine if
- 6:16they're in, but the only one that God really cares about is
- 6:20the Jews. No, God was intending all the
- 6:23way from Genesis 3 and verse #15 to bring the Messiah Jesus
- 6:28Christ from the lineage of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David
- 6:34into the world that he would be truly God and truly man.
- 6:40And so God was doing all of this for this purpose.
- 6:43Verse #4 continues. Because you are precious in my
- 6:47sight and honored, and I love you.
- 6:50I will give people in exchange for you and nations instead of
- 6:54your life, that instead of Israel experiencing the full
- 6:59condemnation and destruction for their sin which they had justly
- 7:03earned, that God was going to destroy some other nations.
- 7:07And we read all about those back in like the Isaiah 10's and 20s.
- 7:13So he says I'm giving people in exchange for you nations instead
- 7:16of your life. He says do not fear for I am
- 7:18with you. I'll bring your descendants from
- 7:21the east and gather you from the West.
- 7:23I'll say to the north give them up and to the South do not hold
- 7:27them back. Bring my sons from far away and
- 7:30my daughters from the ends of the earth.
- 7:32Everyone who bears my name and his created from my glory, I
- 7:36have formed them. Indeed I have made them.
- 7:40Each person that exists, exists for the glory of God.
- 7:44God is the one that has formed them.
- 7:45God is the one that has made them.
- 7:47It is why we would believe there's kind of a Latin phrase,
- 7:51the Imago day, that we believe that every person is made in the
- 7:55image of God. We get this from Genesis
- 7:57chapters one and two, that in the image of God, man and woman
- 8:02were created. And so each of us has worth and
- 8:05value. And God says This is why murder
- 8:07is so particularly awful, because you are destroying a
- 8:12picture and image of God himself.
- 8:17Now from verses 8 through 13 kind of does a little bit of a
- 8:20new section. It says bring out a people who
- 8:22are blind, yet have eyes and are deaf, yet have ears.
- 8:27All the nations are gathered together and all the peoples are
- 8:30assembled. Who among them can declare this
- 8:33and tell us the former things? Who can tell us how things used
- 8:36to be? Let them present their witnesses
- 8:38to vindicate themselves, so that people may hear and say it is
- 8:42true. You are my witnesses.
- 8:44This is Yahweh's declaration and My Servant whom I've chosen.
- 8:48Now remember, this is going to always be a picture of the
- 8:51Messiah. Sometimes this will also be a
- 8:54picture of like Israel, but the Messiah is the perfect example
- 8:59of this servant. He says in my servant whom I've
- 9:03chosen, and you are the witnesses.
- 9:05This is what God says so that you may know and believe me and
- 9:09understand that I am he. No God was formed before me, and
- 9:15there will be none after me. God is in a rank and type and
- 9:21substance and being all of his own.
- 9:23He is the uncreated 1. He is the one that no one was
- 9:27before him, that there will be no subsequent God after him.
- 9:32Contrary to the claims of some cults, we will not become gods
- 9:39of our own planets and worlds like some cults teach.
- 9:44Instead, all throughout the endless ages, God is All in all.
- 9:49He is the high and lifted up and Holy One.
- 9:52All worship will go to Him forever, not to us.
- 9:57Verse #11 I, I am Yahweh. Besides me there is no Savior.
- 10:04This is why it's so important. Even though the New Testament
- 10:08doesn't always phrase Jesus's deity in the ways that we in the
- 10:1321st century would expect or want the the New Testament to
- 10:18phrase Jesus's deity. Phrases like this connected with
- 10:23the New Testament make it very, very, very clear that the
- 10:27disciples and the apostles, those that knew and had
- 10:30interacted with Jesus and then we're carrying out his message
- 10:35and his gospel work. They knew that Jesus was God,
- 10:40Jesus was Yahweh because Jesus is the only wise God, our
- 10:46Savior. As we would read in, I think
- 10:48it's Jude 24, you can read, I believe Titus 3 has a statement
- 10:53something like this. First, John says that Jesus is
- 10:57the Savior of all mankind. Same kind of thing in First
- 11:01Timothy chapter 2. There's one God and one mediator
- 11:04between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
- 11:08All of that in connection with the Old Testament says there was
- 11:12only one Savior. It is God and Jesus is God.
- 11:16Now we would know. In other portions of the New
- 11:20Testament it's also fleshed out. We have one God in three
- 11:23persons, so that the Son is not the Father.
- 11:27The Father is not the Spirit. The Spirit is not the Son, but
- 11:30the Father's God. The Son is God, the spirit is
- 11:32God, the Father is Lord, Son is Lord, Spirit is Lord, Father,
- 11:37Savior, Son, and Savior. Spirit is Savior.
- 11:40These three are one. There's not three gods, there's
- 11:43one God, there's not like 3 saviors.
- 11:46There is one savior. This is a divine wonderful
- 11:49mystery. But today is not an episode on
- 11:52the Trinity, it's an episode on Isaiah 43.
- 11:54But I did want to bring that out, that the New Testament
- 11:56authors want to make it very clear to us that Jesus is this
- 12:00God, this Yahweh, this Savior, and he is the one true Savior.
- 12:05Verse #12 I alone declared, saved and proclaimed, and not
- 12:10some foreign God among you. So you are my witnesses.
- 12:13This is Yahweh declaration and I am God also.
- 12:17From today on I am He alone, and none can rescue from my power.
- 12:22I act and who can reverse it? This is the wonderful doctrine
- 12:26of the sovereignty of God, that what God has decreed can and
- 12:30will happen and there is no one that is going to be able to
- 12:33thwart what God is doing Now. God in His amazing storytelling
- 12:38will sometimes have it where people do sins and actions of
- 12:44their own in free will, not by decree of God.
- 12:46God never commands evil or entices anyone to do wrong, yet
- 12:52they in their fallen, evil, sinful nature, they choose
- 12:57wrong. But that is not against, it's
- 13:00not thwarting what God is attempting to do.
- 13:03God paints that into the tapestry so that our sorry
- 13:08tapestry is something I think you sew or put together like
- 13:11that. It's something that God paints
- 13:14into the painting so that the final picture is beautiful.
- 13:20Greatest example of this that I know of is the Old Testament
- 13:23with Joseph and then in the New Testament with Jesus Christ and
- 13:27we read even some of the apostles words.
- 13:28I think it's Acts 5 where they are praying to the Lord and
- 13:33they're saying, hey, God, you know, Jesus was put to death by
- 13:37the Pharisees and the Romans, which you planned out you for,
- 13:42ordained for it to do. But they did not realize what
- 13:46they were doing because if they realized the salvation and the
- 13:49new life that would be brought, they would not have killed the
- 13:52King of glory. They wouldn't have wanted to
- 13:54work with God. But they did things that
- 13:56ultimately worked into God's plan.
- 14:00And so God's sovereignty means everything that happens, happens
- 14:04by God's divine will in such a way that He never commands,
- 14:11entices, forces people to send. They do that of their own
- 14:13accord. But that God makes beautiful
- 14:16things even through humanity's brokenness.
- 14:18Verse #14 This is what Yahweh, your Redeemer, the Holy One of
- 14:22Israel, says. Because of you I will send an
- 14:24army to Babylon and bring all of them as fugitives, even the
- 14:28Chaldeans and the ships in which they rejoice.
- 14:31I am Yahweh, your Holy One, the Creator of Israel, your king.
- 14:34This is what Yahweh says. Who makes a way in the sea.
- 14:37So think of the Red Sea in a path through raging water, Who
- 14:41brings out the chariot and the horse, the army and the Mighty
- 14:44One. Together they lie down and they
- 14:47do not rise again. They're extinguished, put out
- 14:49like a Wick. Do not remember the past events.
- 14:52Pay no attention to things of old.
- 14:53Don't Don't worry about all the things that used to be because
- 14:57verse #19 look, I'm about to do something new.
- 15:01Even now it is coming. Do you not see it?
- 15:03Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness.
- 15:05Rivers in the desert, wild animals, jackals and ostriches
- 15:09will honor me because I provide water in the wilderness and
- 15:13rivers in the desert to give drink to my chosen people.
- 15:16You can think of the times that God made there to be drinkable
- 15:19water even from the rock or from formerly, like poisonous bitter
- 15:23waters that God made there to be drink for His people.
- 15:27God cares about people. God is supernatural and all
- 15:30powerful. And so verse #21 He says the
- 15:33people I formed for myself will declare my praise that the
- 15:37people of God are not an accident.
- 15:39They are the people that God has deliberately chosen, redeemed,
- 15:43ransomed, made, formed for himself so that we would declare
- 15:48His praises. And you can even look at
- 15:49Ephesians chapter 1, verses 12 to 13 along those same lines
- 15:54verse #22 But Jacob, you've not called on me because Israel, you
- 15:58have become weary of me. You've not brought me your sheep
- 16:02for burnt offerings or honored me with your sacrifices.
- 16:06I've not burdened you with offerings or wearied you with
- 16:09incense. You've not bought me aromatic
- 16:11cane with silver or satisfied me with the fat of your sacrifices.
- 16:16But you have burdened me with your sins.
- 16:18You've wearied me with your iniquities.
- 16:20He says instead of consistently bringing the sacrifices that
- 16:24Israel was tasked to bring, all they kept bringing God was sin
- 16:29and wickedness. And even in the times when they
- 16:32were going through religious motions and maybe bringing a
- 16:35bull or a sheep or something like that, it was not out of a
- 16:39pure heart. It was I want to do more sin or
- 16:44I want people to think well of me.
- 16:46And so it was not actually in repentance that people were
- 16:50offering sacrifices. And so God says Israel, like
- 16:53I've loved you, I've cared for you, I am ransoming you, I'm
- 16:56redeemed you, and yet you are not dealing with me as your God,
- 17:01with obedience and repentance and treating God and others
- 17:05rightly. Instead, they were going their
- 17:07own way. Verse #25 I am the one I sweep
- 17:11away your transgressions for my own sake and remember your sins
- 17:15no more. Remind me.
- 17:16Let's argue the case together. Recount the facts so that you
- 17:20may be vindicated. Your first father sinned, and
- 17:24your mediators have rebelled against me.
- 17:27So I defiled the officers of the sanctuary and set Jacob apart
- 17:30for destruction and Israel for scorn.
- 17:34So here there's this reminder that though God has this
- 17:37wonderful future in store, that Israel went into exile as a
- 17:42result of their total abhorrence for God, for God's way for God's
- 17:47way of treating people and their way of treating God himself.
- 17:52Can I ask you today, what is the way in which you treat God?
- 17:56Do you come to him offering your sacrifices, your offerings and
- 18:00offering of praise and offering of worship, repenting of your
- 18:05sin, a grieving your sin before God?
- 18:08Do you come to him and say God, I'm sorry, I need you.
- 18:12I need you to fix me. Because the way that I'm acting
- 18:15in my marriage or the way that I'm acting with my kids, or the
- 18:17way that I'm acting at my job with my friends, this just is
- 18:21not working. And so God, I don't need more of
- 18:23me. I need more of you.
- 18:25Are you calling out to him like that?
- 18:26And do you realize that when we actually desire a relationship
- 18:30with God, that he always wants that relationship with us?
- 18:35And so as a result, we can come boldly to the throne of grace
- 18:39and find His grace to help in time of need.
- 18:44What a joy that that is. I want you to take some comfort
- 18:47from this God that redeems and ransoms, that forms a people for
- 18:51Himself, to praise Him, to lift Him up, that He's the one that
- 18:54cares for us. Even if we were scattered all
- 18:57across the world, He would be the one to bring us back, even
- 19:00as He did for Israel. But then we need to remember
- 19:03that we can take God for granted, that we can reject His
- 19:08way and still expect for Him to bless us in our wickedness.
- 19:14May we remember that there can be temporal consequences for our
- 19:18actions. May we seek a vibrant
- 19:20relationship with God that does not invite the judgment of God
- 19:24on our sin. And we can be so thankful that
- 19:26because of Jesus Christ, the ultimate condemnation for our
- 19:31sin, hell itself, eternal separation from God is never
- 19:35something that the child of God will experience.
- 19:37But let's not live like we are those headed for hell.
- 19:41Let us live like those that are in relationship with God.
