- Clare: Hello everyone. Welcome to the podcast You've Got Options. So I decided to start this podcast because in my work with open option engineering students who, if you aren't familiar, are students that come into the College of Engineering and they know they want to do engineering but they don't know what kind of engineering they want to do. there are so many, so many majors within our college. And while there is so much information out there on places like departmental websites, it's hard to expect students to take time out of their already busy schedules to sift through multiple websites to explore all of our majors. And many have expressed that the most valuable information they get is from people who are actively experiencing these fields. Thus, this podcast was born as a way to get students, faculty, and staff to share their own personal insights into the major they're studying or working in all in one place in a format that is easy to access and even easier to process. to share a little bit about myself and how I got to where I am. it was not a linear path. It was not a linear journey. I didn't go to college thinking I would end up as an academic advisor. I really didn't know what I wanted to do eventually. so I went into college as a business major along the way I started to think about how I want to use this degree and I was still really confused. the only thought that kept coming back to me was I just love people. I just love talking to people. I love getting to know them. I love understanding how they work, how we work together. But I still had no idea what kind of field or sector I would go into. and then very early into my undergrad I saw a job posting. I needed a job, So I applied to kind of a student support role for orientations over the summer. And I ended up really enjoying it. And I thought it was very fun. And the opportunity to become a peer advisor came up at the end of the summer. I applied, I got the job, and then I spent that year being a peer advisor. And once again, I loved it. I loved talking with students. I loved getting to know them. I loved getting to help them. And so I worked as a peer advisor for almost all of my undergrad and I knew I really loved it so I ended up applying for academic advisor positions and that's how I ended up here. this entire story is to exemplify that you don't need to know exactly where your life is going to end up. Opportunities will arise that may completely change your track and where you thought you were going and give you purpose or produce a passion for you. And it may be that you end up on the exact track that you always imagined for yourself. But being open, being curious, being flexible, being kind to yourself during this time and period of your life where there is so much uncertainty about your future, I think Is extremely important in the decision making process and just as you go through your time in college. Now look, I'm not trying to say I know everything. I'm not trying to say that I know best, but take it from somebody who had a lot of anxiety about where I was gonna end up, what I was gonna do for my future. so this podcast is for anyone wanting a glimpse into an engineering or applied science major within our college. Anyone curious about what it's truly like to be an aerospace engineering student, a civil engineering student, and anything in between. In the episodes to follow, you can expect conversations with professors, program directors, current students, and other staff like academic advisors about their experience. In each episode, I will also give a rundown of things like foundational courses you can expect to take in the major within the first year or two, research topics, typical careers for people in these fields, and any other details that would be helpful to give you a comprehensive overview of each major. And don't you worry, I will also be giving you my thoughts. Because while I don't know how to use a protractor or solve a differential equation, I do know a little bit about the process of discovery and what it means to make an informed decision. I'm a Virgo for crying out loud. You don't think I sort through every possible path I could take and make a pros and cons list for each one? Please. So for all the Virgos out there and everyone else that is facing this crossroad, I hope this is a helpful guide and you learn about the people, paths, and possibilities within the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU Boulder. And yes, that is our tagline, someone trademark it. So follow along and be on the lookout for more episodes. We'll talk soon, y'all. Bye.
