- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Hello, my name is Craig Nash.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: We'd like to welcome you to another It's a Grand Life.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: And I we've got some guests today that are just gonna bless your socks off.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: They are pouring their lives into young men in the city of Detroit, in fact, not far from the neighborhood where I grew up.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: And our guests today are Pastor McKinley Graddock and also Pastor Mark Zakheim.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I hope I didn't mess your name up, Pastor Mark.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, Zakim, that's close enough.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: Zakim.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: But these gentlemen are doing their amazing work, and they uh I can't wait for them to share with you their ministry or their organization or whatever you want to call it called Men of Vision Mentoring.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: So um, Pastor Mac, uh, how did you and Pastor Mark get started in this outstanding organization and tell us about it?
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Well, this is really uh, I guess we've been involved with the young people for quite a while.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: And it literally started with a summer lunch program.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, we had a summer lunch program, and uh a lot of young men was there, and they came and they had said, uh, what I coached them in a basketball uh team.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I said, well, if you guys are committed to coming together team, I'd be committed to coaching you.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And they came together like one man.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: And I had no gym, I had no place to take them.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: And an old friend named Virgil Phillips at that time, uh, he had a program going on.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: He told us to bring them over there, and we went over there and played a game.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: And something happened.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I had called a timeout in one play.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I called a timeout.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: And all the young men they came to me and they looked at me and they had uh such hope that I was gonna give them something.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And I said, whatever I tell them, I gotta make sure what I tell them is the truth.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And so that's literally how it got started with coaching basketball.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Because when coaching basketball, it was like a blank canvas with the young men.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And it just uh they asked me to help them, but really they ended up helping me.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: And so it just continued to evolve and continued to evolve, and then uh we reached a point uh some years ago, we said, let's just go ahead and make it a nonprofit.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Uh so then we went on so we can garner support for the program, and then we went on and started the men of vision mentoring somewhere around about 2019, somewhere in there.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: And so we've been going ever since then as a man of vision mentoring program.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: So you started with basketball, which makes sense.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Things tend to start on the court, and it kind of evolved into other more um hands-on, more face-to-face, more educationally related, I would imagine, mentoring.
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: How did it evolve?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Well, after a while, um, I found out that um some of the things we were discussing, or some of the things I had the opportunity to discuss with the young men, I had a blank canvas.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: We can discuss anything.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: And it became a beautiful um platform to minister on.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And it just started, well, I started at first I was telling them young, first I was telling the young men, out of arrogance and out of pride, you guys ain't been through nothing I ain't been through until I started really connecting with them and finding out, wow, they're going through some serious things that I never been through.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And then I started listening a little more than talking.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: And then through that, you know, I recognized um where we were at as a people.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, our young men was in a position where um they really wanted to cry for help, but they had to hold a disposition of toughness.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: And uh so that's how it kind of really just started evolving to how can we help them as far as education, as far as jobs, as far as um just uh understanding of who they are as a young man.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Um and I share this just going a little further.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Um, one of the first questions that was asked in the Bible is Adam, where are you?
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Um the man was missing, and he wasn't where God had uh placed him to be.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: And so we look at now the same question can be asked today is where is the man?
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Our young men are growing up without a proper image of what malehood or manhood really should look like.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: And so now they're forming their image of man out of their own understanding, and so we're trying to help them understand what a man is according to scripture.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: And uh and you and and you're doing that with Pastor Mark as well.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: He's you're helping with some of the mentoring as well, Pastor Mark, and and and uh how has that worked out for you as far as getting plugged into these these eager young lives that uh are are really looking for direction and hope from you?
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: And uh tell us about that.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: Well, I get the opportunity, I've been with it for uh maybe a little bit over a year or so.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It was exciting.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: It's exciting to see young men get excited about learning things that they may have an impression of but not really knowing a lot about.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: So to sit in and talk with them and observe them grow as they go to each one of the meetings and they learn something, they experience something, and to grow in such a way that they don't feel ashamed because they don't know.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: But grow in a situation that they feel proud, that they learned something that they can really use in their lives.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So it's it's been exciting.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: And how do you gentlemen um find these young men that want to be mentored?
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Are they are their friends referring them to you or or is or just because you you're you're offering this program, which is very unique in them in the neighborhood?
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: I mean, how do how do folks find out and get get plugged in?
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: That's been an interesting thing.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: We really haven't promoted the program.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Uh we thank you for an opportunity just to be able to promote the program.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: We really haven't promoted it.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Uh again, like I said, it started with coaching, and then we got into the schools, um, Madison Carver Academy.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: They was um, we had quite a few um students from there coming, and then it just kind of continued just word of mouth, word of mouth.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: And um, so we we're blessed to have a place, uh consistent place in the library where we're allowed to meet.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: So we put literature there at the library.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then uh oftentimes people might um searches up on the web.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: We are on the um web as a uh mentoring program, so we get a lot of people who searches up on the web looking for a mentoring program.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: And uh so we really haven't promoted it, I would say, but just word of mouth, um, you know, we're on the website, uh, we do have some literature at the library, and then other young men tell their our friends about it, and so we we've been always having to have somebody there uh to mentor.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: That's absolutely fantastic.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: And you know, in this day and age, you hear a lot of negative things said about young people that they're not interested in, especially in biblical things.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: You know, they they they're not interested in that, they're more interested in social media and and uh but you gentlemen are are seeing a whole different side of young men that they they want to be mentored, they want to be coached, whether it's on the basketball team or in the library.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: And uh what what would you say is uh is your favorite mentoring memory so far of dealing with these young men?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: What are some of the success stories you've had?
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Well, I'll tell you one off the top.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: I share one that always stuck out with me.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Um, this young man, he was I used to pick him up.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: And I used to go pick him up and bring him to the program.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: And he actually, one day I went to go pick him up, he didn't answer the call.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And I came back the next week, he didn't answer the call.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And so the third week he came.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: And so when he started apologizing for missing the last two weeks, but he told me why he missed the last two weeks.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: He said his house had got uh shot up, and him and his grandmother, they had to uh crawl out of the house, you know, and go to, you know, find cover someplace else.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: And he was talking about missing the program, and I had to stop him and say, you know, come back to me and tell me about the shooting.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And so that's when I really kind of recognized it was uh two different worlds that we were trying to bridge because he was living in a world I didn't understand.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: But this young man ended up leading us in prayer, and I just saw how his growth and development, uh, from what he was going through, we were still able to embrace him, and he embraced the program, and I did see uh tremendous growth in him.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: And that was just one extreme example, but there's been so many.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Uh we have some we have some great young men.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: There's a uh a stigma placed upon our young men, and that stigma is what we believe to be true.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Perception is the most simplest form of reality.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: But when you start talking to these young men and interacting with them, man, they are beautiful.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: They are beautiful, they have situations that they're dealing with, and just to be able to not be afraid of them, but to embrace them, and you'll find out they're not the problem, they're really the solution.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Amen to that.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: That's fantastic.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: And so, what happened with the young man who had he's living with his grandma, right?
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: And of course, that's our neighborhood.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: It's a grand life.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: It's all about grandparents raising their grandkids.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: And that that was going to be my next question.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Do you have any grandparents who are raising these young men that are involved in your program?
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: And obviously, you are.
- 10:59SPEAKER_02: You do have.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Um, and uh, and and what do you do you partner with the grandparents to really specifically dial in to the young men and help them get what they need specifically?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: We really haven't um used the grandparents as a target per se.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, we just really open it up, and so what we find more uh is more what we they call them, they say single mothers.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: And we we try to say, when you say you're a single mother, that puts yourself in a um in an inferior category.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: It sounds as like you're all by yourself.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: But when we start recognizing they are all our children, you're not by yourself.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: Even though you're looking in the situation where you're raising your child by yourself, it's amazing how when we partner together, you can tell your son something a hundred times, and we can come behind and say the exact same thing one time.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: And he said, Oh, you know, and I said, It's not a matter of who tells it to him, it's just a matter of who when he gets it.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: And so, yes, we do have uh matter of fact, one mother in particular is a great-grandmother.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Uh, she is raising her um great-grandson, which is incredible to me.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: And uh, so she is doing a uh uh man uh a great job in taking on that task.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And so uh I do salute her, but for the most of most part of it, most of our mentees come from um you know just the mother at the home.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Uh and a few that a couple that are with grandmothers, yes, sir.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: And and so the the the word gets out now from the Redford Public Library, right?
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: The uh Redford branch of the Detroit Public Library.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: But I mean, right now we're uh hopefully we are speaking to uh hundreds of grandparents in Metro Detroit all over the country, really.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: And but uh but those of us who are in the Detroit area, I mean, I know you're speaking to some grandparents that are gonna love this.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: This is just really outstanding what you're doing.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Tell us when do you meet?
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: How long do you meet, and uh and how and how does that work?
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, outstanding.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: So we meet every Saturday.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: We start in October and we go through May.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: We we conclude in May.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And we meet every Saturday, um, 3 p.m.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: to 5 p.m.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And our teaching is biblically based, although we don't beat them over the head with the Bible, it's biblically based.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: And the name of the program is Men of Vision Mentoring.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, where there's no vision, the people perish.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, happy is he that keepeth the law.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's Proverbs 29, 18, I believe it is.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: And what that entails, or what we're using as a platform, is telling our young men, if you don't have a vision, then as the head, if you don't know where you're going, then that's the equivalent to the blind leading the blind.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: And so we're trying to encourage them to have a vision.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: There's an African proverb that says, uh, today is not the day to plan for today.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: And so we're trying to get them with even the mindset of starting out in the morning, making their bed up, uh, turn around and make your bed up.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And that's what your vision of when you come back to lay down, your bed is already prepared for you.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Um, but the ultimate objective is for them to see Christ.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: Um, because we recognize if you don't, you can have all these material things, but if you don't know the Lord and save your own personal savior, then the Bible says, what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his only soul?
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: So we have different um uh professions that come in and talk to the young men.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: We just had we had a carpenter come in recently, uh talk to him about carpentry.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: We've had a uh a gentleman who worked in human resources.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: He came in and spoke to the young men.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: We had a master carpenter, I mean a master chef, a master electrician, different walks of life.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Uh we have to come and talk to our young men just so they can see uh something other than drugs and basketball and rapping uh to be able to provide a means of living.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Uh we have tutors, we got um reading tutors, we got math tutors to try to help our young men in that area.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Um we go on field trips.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: We're planning to go to um Lancaster, Pennsylvania, uh in July to see a play called Um Joshua at the Sights and Sounds Theater.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Um phenomenal theater there.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: We went last year and we saw Noah, um, and like I said, community service.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: So we're really just trying to um equip these young men uh in their walk of being a man.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: We're trying to give them everything they need.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: And one of the things that uh we won't say we're proud of, but we're thankful for, is that it doesn't cost the young men anything to be a part of the program.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Uh we have uh lunch we provide for them every meeting, uh, and it's again absolutely free.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: We don't want economics to be a reason why uh somebody can't partake in this program.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: And so we are looking now, Bob's becoming 501c3.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: We are looking now to actively um you know support um donors and supporters uh to help with the uh finance of the program.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: And that's absolutely terrific.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: And I don't know why you wouldn't have all the support you need because you're doing frontline work and really making a difference in the lives of these young men.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: And I love the fact that you're so consistent.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: You meet every Saturday, and uh and that is just so powerful because it you know sometimes when you meet every couple weeks and you folks get out of a rhythm, but um, and you got a great time there in the afternoon where you know there's there's there's not a lot going on, so let's get the young men in the library, and um, that's absolutely terrific.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: So uh Pastor Mark, do you want to add anything to that?
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Or how this is uh how you reach out to these young men, or some of the the what's been your favorite memory of of mentoring these young men?
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Well, several weeks ago we we had some young men there and they were doing some reading.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: So one of the young men stood up and he read some uh report, and he was working.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And the other young man stood and listened to read the report.
- 17:16SPEAKER_00: And some of them may be good readers and some of them may not be good readers, but they were very, very engaged in watching him and reading and it's wonderful to watch them read, you know, watching him read and say, you know what?
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: I think I can do that.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: I think I can read not only read, but read out loud and and pronounce the words and and understand it, and understand the meaning of the words, and understand the meaning of the story.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Um that is extremely important.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Um we were just having a conversation today about a young man that the library sits right next to the fire department and the wind blows, and it's paper, and especially this time of year, and there's trash and it's right at the library parking lot.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: So last weekend uh Pastor Grant and the and the volunteers were able to take the young men out there and pick up tons and tons of trash and paper and stuff, right at the interest of the li interest of the librarian right behind the fire station.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: It made such a huge difference.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Now, the young men, you know, just like young people know, they they moan and groan.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: You know, it's cold, I got my new shoes, I'm tired, I seen a bug, whatever.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, when they look back and remember what it looked like and realize what it does look like, and that they had a hand in it, or they had an investment in it, it made their world better, and it made the world of the people who see it better.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And so that means that if we continue to invest in them, then they can invest in their communities as well.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: That just and that that's building that connection to community and then and letting them see even just cleaning up all the trash around them, what an impact that makes.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: And then everybody's in a better mood, and things are much more positive.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: So, gentlemen, I want to ask you if you if you could speak to our audience right now and and say what does men of vision mentoring need?
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: What do you need to go to that next level of success in in the in the Redford community?
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: If you go ahead first, brother Mark.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And so what is most needed is what you mentioned a while ago, the consistency.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: And so we need people who are willing to volunteer and to volunteer on a consistent basis.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: It's one thing we when someone sees you and it says, Oh, that is so nice that you have it was another thing that you can't do week after week and you listen to help it for a few minutes is good and it's needed, like consistency where where people are coming in and says, you know what, we're willing to invest our time, our effort, we're willing to invest in you and your SSS.
- 20:12SPEAKER_00: And so if we if anything else is that consistency and for someone tell people to say, I want to donate my time and my patience.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: How many additional mentors do you gentlemen think you need?
- 20:31SPEAKER_01: So we we won't turn away help.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: One thing about it is um we've we have a background check that they are subject to, need to go through, and then they are actually uh interviewed.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: And our intent is to be very mindful who we're putting over uh our young men.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Uh the parents are trusting us with their young men.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: So uh one of the things that we are uh at um you know we advocate is that you are putting in a position as a role model, not just on Saturday from three to five.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: You're putting in a position as a role model 24 hours a day.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Our young men can see you at the gas station, see you at um Home Depot, uh, see you out in the street.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: And we don't want you to be anything other than what you are on Saturday.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: And so we're um we definitely uh, you know, like I say, the harvest is plenty, it's just the labor status you.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: And so what we say with the um with the mentorship program, commitment is the key word.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, because a lot of times our young men have people in and out of their lives.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: And so if a person wants to commit as a mentor, uh, we just ask them, you know, how many hours can you commit a month?
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: If you can commit, you know, just one Saturday a month, that's all we're asking for.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Uh if you can do more than that, that's great.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: But if you can just be consistent on that one Saturday, or you can be consistent two, whatever you commit to, we just want to hold you to that commitment.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: And so, and then there's many ways.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: We're looking, uh we're looking for grant writers.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're looking for um anyone who definitely wants to support the program.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: My brother Mark spoke about investment, and this is an investment.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: Um, we invest in our young men.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: And I can say right now, we recognize our young men are on the receiving end.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And what we're teaching them is freely you're receiving.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so then freely you give.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: And so we want them to know that they are being invested in.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And just like Brother Mark spoke about the um the paper in the um in the parking lot there, right in the entranceway.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: You know, we said, yes, you didn't put it down there, but you see it.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: And so now you have the strength and the energy to make where you are better.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: And that's what we're trying to invest in them to recognize they are an asset, not a liability.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: And so once they start seeing what they can do on that creative end, it becomes contagious, even to the point now, when they know what effort it took to clean that mess up, now it's much easier to say uh uh what they say, a stitching time save nine.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: It's much easier now if you see somebody dropping the paper or you want to drop the paper, you recognize, wait a minute, let's just take this and put this in the trash so we don't have to come back out here.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: And you know, so um, like I said, we are um we have a website.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: If somebody wants to donate um in that regard, um they can click on the website.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: There is a place where you can donate.
- 23:33SPEAKER_01: Um, we are definitely going to start putting out some um you know some information if somebody wanted to be uh consistent in their donation, whether it's you know, uh once a month, um once a year, you know, twice a year, we want to start being in that regard.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: So it's all going towards the upbuilding of our young man.
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: So ask me, Kenley, what is the website address?
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: The website address is oh is it um I think it's move mo v m okay movmentoring.org.
