- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. It is a rainy morning here and I
- 0:33apologize for not being on yesterday.
- 0:36But as you can hear, my voice is going in and out a little bit
- 0:38and it's just, it was just overworked and I had to take a
- 0:43break sounded even worse. So I just took a little bit of a
- 0:47break and sat back, drank a lot of tea and feeling like it's
- 0:51it's on the mend. So that's all good.
- 0:53And I think it's a lot to do with this pollen.
- 0:56But anyway, massive, massive progress on the seed planting
- 1:02that we had set up for the garage and that I had had
- 1:06planned. Now, one of the things I love to
- 1:08share with all of you is my failures so you can understand
- 1:12how to get past them. I last year, I would not say was
- 1:16a failure in gardening at all, but what I would say is I had
- 1:20some failures in it. And one of my major ones was
- 1:24that I lost a lot of labels. And one would think like, how
- 1:28can that possibly happen? Well, when you're planting a lot
- 1:32of plants, it's very easy to lose your coordination and
- 1:37labeling. And I had decided I was going to
- 1:40use popsicle sticks and I wrote on them in a Sharpie and I was
- 1:43convinced that it was going to be OK.
- 1:45But one of the things that you don't realize with popsicle
- 1:48sticks is that they suck the water up.
- 1:50So the popsicle sticks turned black from the water being so
- 1:56rich and with the dirt in it and I could not read what was in
- 2:02them no matter what I tried. So it was a guessing game and it
- 2:06was so annoying to me and frustrating.
- 2:09And we had some issues with lighting where I didn't have
- 2:14wide enough lights, so the plants on the outside of the
- 2:17lights on the stands were not getting hit as much as the ones
- 2:20in the middle, and therefore they were stretching.
- 2:23And it just became this long line of little things that were
- 2:28irritating. So this year, in order to learn
- 2:32from our mistakes because that's the best thing that we can do, I
- 2:35made sure every tray was planted with like items so I didn't mix
- 2:41things up the best that I could. I have labels, plastic labels
- 2:47inside now, and it's labeled not just with the word pepper, but
- 2:51the kind of pepper on the outside of the trays.
- 2:54I have them labeled so I can see instantaneously what's on that
- 2:58shelf. Like for instance, a tray that
- 3:01may have tomatoes in it, like the one I'm looking at has six
- 3:05different kinds of tomatoes growing in it.
- 3:07Three plants of each there, 18 starter, 3 by 3 plants sitting
- 3:14in each one or soon to be plants.
- 3:16However, the whole tray is also labeled tomatoes.
- 3:19So I can just look at it, scan it and see what's there.
- 3:22So there's not the drama of wondering like, oh, what is
- 3:25that? Is that a watermelon or is that
- 3:28something else? Like what, what, what is that
- 3:30that that's supposed to be? So I had to be very, very
- 3:34careful in my organization upfront.
- 3:37But what that taught me was as organized as I think I am, I'm
- 3:41not always that organized. So I thought it through.
- 3:44I made sure I had every single little thing that I could
- 3:48organized in just the right way so that I was getting the most
- 3:52out of it. And when I do things like that,
- 3:55one, I feel like I actually learned something and I'm
- 3:57smarter 2, I feel like the project is going to come
- 4:01together better. And three, I feel like when I
- 4:06see everything put together, I feel like, okay, right, I did a
- 4:10better job. Now this year we're going to
- 4:13have an entire rack of vegetables.
- 4:17So we're going to have one that instead of mixing them back and
- 4:21forth, herbs and vegetables, that's going to be.
- 4:24So if you picture this, we've got 18 seed starter plant pots
- 4:30in each tray and we've got 4 trays on a shelf.
- 4:33So then we've and we've got 3 shelves.
- 4:36So we have a lot of plants that are going to be going outside
- 4:40and then we have a duplicate of that set up for flowers.
- 4:43And the flowers will be planted probably next weekend because
- 4:47they have to go out when it's a little bit warmer.
- 4:50But the vegetables have all started.
- 4:52Everything is going and that's not including the ones that have
- 4:54to direct. So, so I have maps of
- 4:57everything. I'm, I mean, I am being diligent
- 5:00with this to make sure I nail it.
- 5:02And sometimes when you do that in your life overall, and you
- 5:06just pause and say, I would rather be this this process take
- 5:10me a little bit longer to get it underway than to have it
- 5:13disorganized. And that's exactly what I did.
- 5:16No rushing, very pragmatic. And the sense of peace that
- 5:20comes over you when you do it is tremendous.
- 5:22I highly encourage you to give it a try.
- 5:25And if you're not thinking of planting things, you know what,
- 5:28give it a shot because I have to tell you, it feels tremendous
- 5:30when you see them come up. All right, my friends, I hope
- 5:34you have a blessed day. Go be pragmatic and I will talk
- 5:36to you tomorrow. Bye.
