Transcript
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Hey everyone, welcome to this week's episode of Epic Entrepreneurs.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: I am Cliff McCray with Acting Coach Business Growth Partners, where we work with local business owners to turn big ideas into real scalable growth.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Today I'm excited to be joined by Anthony Sparks with Sparks Media Agency.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Anthony, how are you doing today?
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: I'm doing well.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: I'm doing well.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: How are you?
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: I'm doing great, man.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: Doing really, really well.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: We're really excited to hear more about you, you know, kind of you as a person and uh Sparks Media Agency, you know, in Morgantown, West Virginia.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: So um, yeah, if you don't mind, let's go ahead and jump right into it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's do it.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So my name's Anthony.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, let's do it.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: I'm ready to jump the gun.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Let's get ready to go.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: All right, yeah, no problem, man.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's get right into it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: So, you know, Sparks Media Agency in Morgantown, West Virginia, you know, what do you provide for the community?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So we're a creative agency.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You know, we handle everything from video production to website to rebrands to placing your ads, whether that's through Meta, YouTube pre-roll, you know, streaming TV.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: We are turning 12 years old this fall.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And it's real exciting because starting out wasn't scary because it was so naive to just was working, and then this is what I wanted to do.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: To now, you know, having a team of young, young men and you know, some other resources.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna rewind here for a second.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: We have uh a handful of young professionals on my team now, and they've developed so much in the short amount of time that they've been, you know, on the team.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: You know, Noah's been here almost three years, Matt two, and and our newest employee just two months, and you know, all of our other vendors that we work with.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: It's just it's just amazing because we make such an impact and clients come in and and they are heard and we want to discover with them and not just say, hey, we're gonna do this commercial, but like, why are we doing this thing?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Or you know, they there's these other things that we can do as well.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: You know, so it's just been a it's been a journey the last 12 years, and you know, I'm really excited for the next 12.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, okay.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: And who is Anthony Sparks as a person?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: What do you got going on in your personal life?
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Well, I have two wonderful, beautiful daughters.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: One is four and the other is two, so they are 18 months apart.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: So outside of, you know, outside of me being at the office and and work, I'm spending a lot of time with them.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And, you know, during the summers I play softball.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And then really outside of that, sleeping.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: You know, there's there's not a lot of time after that.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, especially with two little kids, you know, yeah, definitely gotta make sure you get that sleep in.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: Very fair.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Now, what did, you know, what did the earliest version of Sparks look like compared with the agency you run today?
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: You know, you said you've been in business for 12 years, so how's that come along?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: I think the the one word that I could describe it as is clarity.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: I have more clarity now than I ever had.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And in the beginning, it it just was so innocent.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I was a one-man band for six, six years, and I just wanted to do cool shit.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: You know, I just wanted to create cool stuff for clients that I thought could tell a story, you know, not to serve my ego, but use my creative ability to to help tell this story or to help get this brand out there or you know, photograph this this house.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You know, it was so innocent and like there was just this empty canvas, and I just was painting, right?
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And now it's clarity, it's it's strategy, it's systems, it's understanding why we were doing it for the client.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: You know, people walk, people walk in our door and they know that they're going to be taken care of, and it's going to be a of enjoyable and relief of a journey, and not just coming in to shoot a video or you know, do some headshots.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's the client experience for for us, and my crew gets it, and the clients that we have get it.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And yeah, so I would say clarity in the beginning, it just, oh, I thought this thing would be cool, or I'm gonna go do this thing or go talk to this person.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: It's it's a it's a well-oiled machine now.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: Now, when did you make the shift from thinking like a videographer or a creative to thinking like an agency owner?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I called it the great pause, which was COVID for for me.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: The great pause, yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: For a lot of people.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because there you never never in your career can you literally be caught up and then say, well, what am I gonna do now?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And so I took advantage of that time period where I didn't have any work or I had to mail money back, or there there just was nothing going on.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: There's no events, there's no this, there's no that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And so that's when I really started to make that mental shift.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: This is what I always wanted to do, but you you get caught up in admin and emails and you know, running your one-man band.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: It's harder than say, hey, I'm gonna be an agency owner when you're stacking all of this work.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And so that that for me was was the fork in the road.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And I never looked back.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And it was, you know, in my previous career, I worked for a marketing agency earlier when I was 22 to 24, 25.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I still had my business.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: I was doing very, you know, inexpensive things.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: And but I fell in love with that part of it, and that's what I wanted to create.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: And that moment in from 2000 or 2020 to 2022, I just went hell bent and was talking to everybody, and that was that was it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Like that was it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And so that went from teaching how to write scripts to how to have an employee.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: What what's a great work culture, you know, expenses of computers and just more.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And that to me was such I wish I wish it would have happened faster, but there was no other way.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Now, Anton, I know you describe Sparks as creative storytelling plus strategy.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: What does that combination mean in actual practice?
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Man, it's incredible.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: It is, it is because you know, the the the number one word I I use very purposefully within our client meetings is discovery, right?
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Like we we don't know what we don't know.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And so we come in very prepped in pre-production and in just client intakes because, you know, yes, we value and want to collaborate with the client, absolutely.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: But also we want to ask hard-hitting questions.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: We want to ask, we want to get answers like, I've never been asked that before, or I don't know, let me think.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Like that's what we want.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: We just don't want to be reactionary.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: We want to have these deep, meaningful conversations so we can create deep, meaningful, impactful things.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it makes perfect sense.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Now, how do you kind of get a client past, you know, we need a video and into the deeper question of what business result they actually are needing?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's funny you asked me that because one of my newest employees he asked, how how do clients trust you?
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: How do you get clients like when when he's like, when they're at the table, like I'm sitting at our table that we do all of our meetings at with clients, and he's sitting here, he goes, When people walk in, when clients walk in here and they sit at the table, how do they trust you?
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And so I yelled to the other room to one of my other employees, I go, Hey Noah, Jake asked me this question.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And Noah goes, Oh, they already trust us before they walk in the door.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And then he's then Jake goes, How?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And I said, Jake, I've been doing this 12 years.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: You know, they they they will by them walking in the door, they know they're gonna be taken care of.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: And so understanding, yeah, we might they might be wanting to do one video, but like let's look at the grand scheme of things.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Let's look what at the next six months or next six years.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Like, that's cool, that's great, let's do this video.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: But like, what's next?
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Is that gonna get us past that threshold?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: And so just being real and authentic with people in their strategies and again listening.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: We might just do one video, but like let's have a conversation on on why and and how is that serving and what else can we do for you?
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, no, that's true.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Now, you work across a wide range of industries.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: So does specialization help an agency or has variety been an advantage for you?
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: It it moves the needle for us.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: You know, we have our uh particular industries we you know we enjoy working with and that we have a lot of experience, but we keep it diverse, one on purpose for economic purposes, because, you know, let's just say federal agencies cut education from state to state, right?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And so then we used to do a ton of education.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: We don't anymore because of that reason.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I do it for that reason, but also it it creative isn't we shouldn't pigeonhole ourselves in being creative.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: I don't care if it's an insurance agency, see, a coal mine, uh a car dealership, a healthcare system, like creative is creative.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Storytelling is storytelling, you know, it's it's not it's not one size fits all.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: It's what are the uh objectives why we do this, and like how can we tell the story in the in the best way possible to the right people as well.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: So we enjoy that.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Like yesterday we did, well, this is airing in October.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So in September, we were we we just were wrapping up a roofing commercial with a call a college coach, and it was called the family huddle.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: You know, what was the family gonna do?
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Well, let's do a family huddle.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And, you know, then today the guys are shooting a really cool drone video and another nonprofit video.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we keep things diverse on purpose because we enjoy what we do and we wanna we wanna make an impact.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: We want to help people, and so you know, creative is just it's an it's an incredible thing once you crack the code.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Once you have a great team and like, you know, clients trust you.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Now, do you have a particular project, you know, kind of what has been the project, client, or milestone that kind of changed the directory or the trajectory of the agency?
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: So uh I'm gonna answer, I'm gonna answer, I'm gonna give you two.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna give you two answers.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: One, it's a personal one.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Back in 2019, uh 2018 or 2019, I can't remember, uh, pre-COVID, there was we did a handful of videos for a medical device company.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: And we filmed six heart surgeries in one day.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: So over the course of 13 hours, I'm at the foot of the you know, bed, and the patient is being operated on.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: And we mic'd up both surgeons and the anesthesiologist and recorded the fluoroscopy up on the screen, and the doctors are just literally walking you through how they are doing the watchman procedure.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: So catheter up through the groin, they place the the met the device in a certain part of the heart and it breaks off and the heart and the heart knows to go over top of it.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And they use this, the they use these videos for a huge conference in San Diego, and it was our videos were the best videos at all the other healthcare systems.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: And like for me, it's like, wow, this is really cool.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: At the time, it was just me and the company, and then for that project, I hired a video friend of mine too.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And so it just was two of us that made this these awesome videos.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: And so it was an eye-opening experience.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: One to just be there and be confident and and like know it's gonna be awesome.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And then just being in the surgery, like the the OR.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: We've done several, you know, live surgeries and fake surgeries over the years, but like that one in particular, these docs are just literally walking you through this surgery.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: So to like not be a doctor or not be in the medical field and be there and experience it and kind of be somewhat dangerous in terminology was eye-opening for me.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I was probably 26, so it was very cool.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And it was my contract, I found it and rocked it.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: And they flew three representatives, two out of Texas, one out of Maine, from you know, that were representatives of Boston Scientific.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: So that was a a personal one for me.
- 14:02SPEAKER_02: And I think company wide I made a pause here for a second.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: Well, there isn't a because there's so many, and I I don't I don't want to forget one.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: And I already said there was gonna be two.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could just take out the two part and then lead that one in if you want.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Uh no, because I I I wanna I wanna shout out the team.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: Uh I got one.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: So and and the the other project that was a team win was uh last October when we just brought on our our coal mine client and they needed this video done in probably three weeks, which is doable.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: It's quick but doable.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: And we wrote the script, you know, to did the intake, wrote the script, presented the script all while moving into our new office.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: And then we did the we had a film day, and then Noah turned this video around in three days, and then had his second daughter like two days later.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: And so everybody coming together, knowing what we had to do, not only for us to execute, but again, to give the client the right experience.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, we had to go underground and film for probably four hours.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And two of my guys have never been underground before.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And so it's just being able to trust each other, trust the process, and then also give the client a great experience, all while like we're juggling all of these things.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: We're we're moving offices.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Noah had his daughter, and we just got it done.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: You know, it was a team effort.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Awesome.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Now, I don't know if I told you this here, but uh, we have a pretty good size, you know, entrepreneur audience.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So uh we're gonna get into some of the questions I really want to hear.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: So, especially in this economic climate.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: So, what would you say is the biggest challenge facing Sparks right now?
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: That's a great question.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Because I just solved I I'm I'm in the midst of solving that.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: And so I think I was on a I was on a phone call with a business coach from LA over the summer, and he said, he asked me, he goes, if I could wave a magic wand over the business, you know, what's the one problem that's being solved?
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: And I go, I need a client manager, I need a project manager.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Like it hit me, like why did I ever think of this?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: And so being able to high bring on Jake to the team, you know, and have a lot of these client communications off of my shoulders, or at least kind of, you know, off in the distance.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: And I think just being able to expand what it is that makes clients happy and makes clients want to come through the door.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: And so expanding that, you know, that secret sauce, you know, I can only do so much.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: And I want to be able to teach and develop and mentor.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: And these this team is is doing that.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: And so the challenge is not having me become bottlenecked because I, you know, I can only bring on so many clients and manage and this and this and this and this.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: So being able to have Jake handle that, find his own style, and then people, clients are walking in the in the door through the door with the help of our brand and our cons consistency, but also like his style.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: So that it is a is still a challenge because it's still very, you know, he's still very new to being here.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: So hopefully it's not a challenge in the next couple of months.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's still in that kind of training and development phase, right?
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Learning the business.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I'm and I'm excited.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: I'm very excited.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And, you know, it's just it's gonna write our new chapter.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Now, how many hours a week are you, you know, would you say right now you're working in and on the business right now?
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: In the business?
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: Not as much as I used to, honestly.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I'm able to come on podcasts.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, my my roles are are twofold.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: So, you know, everybody understands I have to run the business, but I'm also the creative director.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And I'm in on brainstorms, I'm in on script writings, like, you know, I I want to be a part of that because one, that's what got us here, but also I really enjoy it.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: And so I've done a much better job, I would say, in the last, I would say all of 26, you know, being able to work on the business and not so much in it as much.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: So, you know, the the newest thing that's going on here by the time this airs is we built a brand new studio in the back of our office.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the whole idea is for us to use it.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: You know, we have a photo side and we'll eventually have a big podcast side, video podcast side.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: And, you know, yeah, we want to use it for clients, but also I've said for a very long time that use me as a resource.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: I've been saying this for 10 years, use me as a resource.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: And now use us as a resource.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: So if you want to come and create your own content, you you can.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: You can just rent the place.
- 19:43SPEAKER_00: There's a teleprompter, or you can do whatever you want to do.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: The place is yours for however long you would want it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, working on the business, I was able to put that vision to life, work with Noah, build it out, and you know, have this great space for not only us, but you know, for other content creators or photographers who or whomever.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: That's awesome.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Now, you know, and and you know, you kind of have to be a little bit vulnerable here, but you know, let's say if we took one of your people aside, right?
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: And we took one of your employees that worked for you aside and we asked them, hey man, this is going to be anonymous.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Just wanted to ask you, you know, what is the greatest strength that you have, that your boss has, that, you know, the owner of the company has?
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: What would you, what would you think they would tell us if we asked them, what is your greatest strength?
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I would want them to say consistency.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: You know, I have to show up every day, no matter if I'm mad, sad, happy, doesn't matter.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: They're gonna say I show up and I'm at my best, whatever that best is.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: You know, I have employees, I have clients, I have my daughters and family and my significant other that I have to show up for every day.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: So no matter what's on my plate, I I have to be here and I have to be my best.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true, that's true.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: And and that's now now let's take it to the flip side of that.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Let's say if we asked them, you know, what's one thing that you can improve upon, what do you think they would say then?
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: They will tell me, just go away.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I love that honesty.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: You do you do a little too much.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Is that what you mean?
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Well, that and they're the you know, not doing too much, but you know, they want to work and I want to be, you know, not involved, but I'm curious.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Like, wait, what are you working on?
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And like, I'm working on this thing.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: I was like, well, we should like we like, you know, what are you editing?
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: And why'd you do it this way?
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Like, not micromanaging whatsoever.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: I'm just curious, you know, because I grew up as a producer.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: That was what I did for a long time.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And so they were just like, just go take lunch.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: Anthony, just go take lunch, go to the bank.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: We don't care.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, get out of here.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Because I am like, I am like everywhere always, like hurricane.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: So yeah, they'll probably just tell me to take a four hour lunch and uh all right.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Now, I know creative agencies can become dependent on the founder's taste, relationships, and approvals.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: So, where is Anthony still the bottleneck?
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, I would say on on the climate.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: Client relations side, and again, we're solving that.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: And the last there's a process to everything that we do.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: And so it doesn't matter if we have a municipality website or a countercat website or a cat commercial.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: You know, all of that has processes, and we all understand that.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: And you know, being creative and having systems is almost an oxymoron, right?
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: But it's a guide to where we need to get to the flow state as quickly as possible, right?
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And so each stage, so client intake, internal brainstorm, script writing, you know, they all have reasons of that stage or of that phase.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: And and it isn't for structure, yes, on a business side, yes, but it's a guide to get you to the flow state and to take thoughts and create them.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: It's taking thoughts, making them ideas, and then executing upon them.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: People have really good ideas, but they don't know how to execute.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And so, because of our processes, we have that very linear timeline.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And so in our internal brainstorm, we meet a client, we just do an intake, ask a bunch of really great questions, really understand why, and then also figure out the capabilities like are we doing an eight-hour shoot, a six-hour shoot, like all of those logistics.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And then we take the time, me and my team, or just my team, depending on if I take a four-hour lunch and they won't want me gone.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: We that that internal brainstorm, say it's 60 minutes.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: There is no bad idea.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: This is the time for all of the stupid, crazy, marvelous ideas.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: After that, no more.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Like after that, the cement is dry and you move on and we execute based on those ideas.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: So, you know, being able to understand those processes makes creative efficient, which is weird, but also like it gets us to the execution execution stage with such great ideas, and then we present it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: Now, I, you know, and I know all great, all clients are great, right?
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: But where would you say your best clients come from today?
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: Is it referrals, networking, repeat clients, outbow outbound digital marketing, or somewhere else?
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: It's a little bit of both, honestly.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Or it's a little bit of, you know, what D, all the above.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: I wasn't the greatest student.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it it's it's all the above.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: You know, we have clients that are coming through the website.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: We have clients that we did some projects four, six years ago, and they're they're coming back.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: And we have consistent clients.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: So, you know, all over the map.
- 25:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: Now, how rigorously do you kind of measure, you know, your lead source, close rate, and client lifetime value and profitability by service line?
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: You measure that at all?
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: I don't.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: And my girlfriend is laughing right now because she would do that.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: She does that in her business, and she would want me to do that here.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I just don't.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: I should, but again, clearing up some of my, some of my time, I'll be able to, you know, look, look on that.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, our clo our closing rate is is high.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: And Jake, you know, our newest employee, Jake, asked me, they're like, What's your closing rate?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And I was like, just fill me in a room.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: I'll get you, I'll get you as close as I can to the deal.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: And if it's not us, it will be us.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: It will be us in two years.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Or we'll get another phone call.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: But I don't know those numbers.
- 26:09SPEAKER_01: Now, you know, I kind of want to get into your competition a little bit here, obviously.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: So, you know, there are agencies everywhere, right?
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: So, you know, why would I choose Sparks over, you know, a competing agency?
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: What makes you guys stand out a little bit?
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: We're authentic.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: And and, you know, none of us are gonna wear a suit and a tie to to close that deal.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: You know, we want to sit down and have a conversation.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: You know, whether we whether you want to work with us or decide to work with us, great.
- 26:38SPEAKER_00: If not, great.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And it's one of those things, we're gonna be real, we're gonna be authentic.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And you'll you'll get that from the start.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna ask really good questions.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: But that at the end of the day, you're gonna get real people, authentic people, and a team that cares.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 26:59SPEAKER_01: Now tell me a little bit about the team you have going on today, all the employees you kind of have under you.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so there's Noah, he's in charge of uh production.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: He actually just walked in and winked at me.
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: I put a battery battery on charge.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: So he he he manages production.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Matt is our senior producer, and then Jake is our business development and our client relations.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: So he's he's the newest to the team.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: And then we have, you know, our web our web team, you know, they're just kind of I'm gonna pause here for a second.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Because I'm gonna pause here, yes.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: That's actually good.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's good.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I'll I'll jump I'll just jump right in and you can, you know, edit it.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: But we have a we have a we have a team of we have a team of creatives that you know get the buy-in and they love the place that they work and want to improve day in and day out.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: And we're young, so I'm 34, Noah I think is 27, Matt is 24, Jake is 21.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: So we're all relatively young and it's actually it's it's so much fun to be able to we don't have investors, like we are in charge of our our own destiny, and I think that's the that's the key to it is we all trust one another, we all want to improve for the betterment of the company in where we work, not because I said so.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it does.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: It does.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: So what is harder for you?
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: Is it finding creative talent, developing them, or trusting them with the client relationship?
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: That's a good question.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: You know, getting here was a risk.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: So it's it's one of these things where if it has to get done, it has to get done.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: And developing the systems and developing a uh a great place to work was was I think the toughest because there you're always you're still making tweaks to it.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: And not because you are inconsistent or can't make a decision in decisiveness, but you're supposed to evolve and new levels and new devils type of thing, and not just for me, but for the company and each individual employee.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: So making these little tweaks to make sure that they are taking accountability or you know, they are taking the initiative or improving, you know, have to increase revenue for equipment.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: So it's just the I I would say developing, I would say developing is I wouldn't necessarily say it's the toughest, but it's the one that you work on the most because it's evergreen.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: All right, perfect.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: So and we're gonna head now head into the this or that section.
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's how this works is I'm gonna give you this or that.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna give you two subjects.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: I want you to choose one and then give me the reason why you chose it, kind of break away from the business talk and get into your personal stuff a little bit here.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: It's just a little bit nice to break up the monotony of the business talk.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: So early bird or night owl or and why?
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: I used to be I used to be a night owl, now I'm an early bird.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: One, because of kids, and two, nobody emails me at 5 a.m.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: Beach or mountains?
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Mountains.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: Any particular reason why?
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: Any particular reason why you choose mountains?
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it it's you have no cell phone service and I love to camp.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: I love to cook, period, but cooking at camp is is the best.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: So just being in solitude.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Dogs or cats?
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Um, both.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm not, you know, what was the Nickelodeon show cat dog?
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: Cat Dog, yeah.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Man, I forgot about that.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Cat dog.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: And that that weird song too.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Cat dog.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Cat dog.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Whatever that that should be my the bumper music whenever uh, you know, uh come on from a commercial break.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: And this one, this one could go for, you know, personal could be different than your business.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: So text or phone call.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Which one do you prefer?
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: I'm a phone call kind of guy.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: I both sides.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: I'm a I'm a chatty Kathy, if you can believe it or not.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Uh stay in or go out.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, in my 20s, I'm going out, but in my 30s, I'm staying in.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: I'm staying in.
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, especially with everything going out going on out there right now.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: It's probably best to just stay in the house.
- 31:55unknown: Yeah.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of craziness going on.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Every time I've scrolling on social media, I'm always seeing some crazy thing to happen outside.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: I'm like, see, this is why I prefer to stay in the house.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: Road trip or fly?
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: If it's more than five hours, I'm flying.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: I get a little bougie, you know, because I'm gonna have to be the one driving.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: And so that means I can't get any work done.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: So yeah, over five.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: If it's outside of a beach, because we went to the outer banks, it's like it was like eight hours from us.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: I'll I'll drive.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: But if if I'm going myself or Rachel and I are going somewhere, I am flying.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, agreed.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anything over five, six hours is just that's just too long to be in a car, man.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know how people can do it.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: Well, it it at the rate the gas is anymore.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: I'd rather buy a damn plane ticket.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's cheaper.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: It it really is at the end of the day.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Especially if you get a you know a good price on one.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I have a I have a uh friend, she uh she loves to come drive up from Florida, and I'm like, I don't know how you make that drive.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: It's like 14 to 15 hours.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: I'm like, there's no way.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: There's no way I'm getting a flight at 7 a.m.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: and having a beer at six, taking an hour and up, emailing, and we're we're we're landing.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: Like done.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, the flight is literally an hour and a half, two hours versus being in the car for 14.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: I I think I'll take the two-hour flight.
- 33:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's just it's more efficient.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, why why do you want to be in the car for that long?
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: I think I mean, or the why I would pick road trip.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, here we go.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Why I would pick road trip is if I'm driving 14 hours, I'm stopping at a couple places that I I want to see or that I want to to get on get off my bucket list.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Or maybe going to see a baseball game at a field that I haven't been to yet.
- 33:44SPEAKER_00: So I would pick road trip if it was calculated, but most of the time I'm fine.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: That, yeah, I I agree with you on that.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, if you're going to do stuff on the way, that's different.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: But if you're just trying to go somewhere straight shot, no, no, thank you.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: It's not fun.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Music or podcast in your car.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: In my car music.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: But if I'm taking a six-hour, six-hour road trip, I'm podcasting.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: I'm guessing you got a nice, nice system in the car, listen to that music, basis dumping and stuff.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the the GMC Canyon.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: It it goes around.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: It's got a nice stock, not stocks hysteria on that.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Netflix or YouTube?
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, Netflix.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: Netflix.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: I remember I remember when they would mail it to you.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, wow.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: Behind the camera or in front of it.
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Depending on what we need to do.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, the guys can throw me a microphone and I can be on camera, but most of the time, you know, now I'm behind and, you know, just kind of mentoring and making sure things are good.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: But yeah.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: I like being in the shadows anymore.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, when I when I first started being in communications in college, I was I announced all of the college football and basketball and volleyball games.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: I love I enjoyed it.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: You know, it was being an analyst and doing the play-by-play.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: And, you know, you you're you're getting you're you're becoming friends with players on the team.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: You know, I did it for three years, two two and a half years.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: And, you know, maybe somebody that was riding the bench the year before is now a superstar.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, knowing stats or bringing things up from previous games, I really enjoy that.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: I had a really awesome technical director that ended up going to and working in NBC Sports in New York City.
- 35:43SPEAKER_00: And so then when he graduated, I I kind of filled his shoes and was the director.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: And, you know, the the the I think there were two sophomores that became the the announcers in replace of me.
- 35:57SPEAKER_00: And then really, ever since then, I've enjoyed the production side of things.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: That I really like, you know, being able to direct and be there.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I don't need to be in front of the camp.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: I don't want to be, you know, the superstar, you know.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Amazing video with 100 views or an average video with 1 million views.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: Who who's ranking the average in I guess you.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: I guess you would, I guess your opinion then.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: The director.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: You know, uh give me the views because in in what we do, the what we do, the the video is ours while we're working on it, but when we're finished and we deliver it, it's the clients.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: So give me the views because it's gonna make the biggest impact for the client.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what everybody's looking for.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: It's those views, likes, and shares and all that good stuff.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: All right, perfect.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Appreciate that.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Appreciate that.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: And then the last one is you know, would you rather have dinner with your future self or relive a great day from your past?
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: Future self.
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: There's a there's a quote that I've really enjoyed the last four or five years is that life can be, oh my goodness, hold on, let me look at that.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm gonna pick future self.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: And there's this quote that I've really enjoyed the last four or five years is life can be only understood backwards, but it must be lived forward.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I can't go meet my past self.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: I can't, you know, can't change anything.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: There was there was no other way.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: So future Anthony, hopefully you're not ball.
- 37:46unknown: A little bit.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: All right, I appreciate you getting through that this or that here.
- 37:51SPEAKER_01: So, you know, which service or client category has the strongest growth potential over the next few years, would you say?
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: I think healthcare.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: It's been like that the last 15, 20 years.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: You know, because the advancement in medicine.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: We have two major hospitals here that we do work for, and it's not like they're gonna get smaller.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: It's not like UPMC, it's not like these other major hospitals across the country are gonna get smaller.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: And so understanding the advancement of medicine and the need for that, I would I I 100% say healthcare.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Whether that's, you know, when we produce things or work with hospitals, it can be anything from promoting urology to, you know, educating with certain, you know, procedures or client patient testimonials.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: So there's a myriad of strategies and reasonings for you know production and creative.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: And I, you know, I I just think it's healthcare.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: And I want you to be as candid as honest as you can in the answer to this last question here.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: So, you know, let's say uh a small, you know, like I told you earlier, we have a pretty good-sized audience there, the small entrepreneurs too.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: So, you know, let's say an entrepreneur is listening to this podcast episode today, and let's say they're just feeling stuck or overwhelmed, right?
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: 2026 has just not been a good year for them, you know, cost of materials is up, and they just had to lay off one of their best techs because, you know, they just can't afford to keep paying them.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: They just don't have the business.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, I had to lay somebody off, and you're just feeling stuck or overwhelmed.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: But what's a piece of advice you'd give to that small entrepreneur today, Anthony?
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: Pete Rose, I don't know if you're a baseball guy.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: But Pete Rose was talking about how to get out of a slump.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: He said, don't change your stance.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Just choke up or choke down on the bat.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, I think that the way that translates into business is just make small tweaks.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: You know, keep doing what you're doing.
- 40:06SPEAKER_00: You'll get unstuck.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Just make small tweaks and be consistent and keep hitting, keep showing up.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: You know, send that email.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: Don't don't let fear don't let fear change your change your vision.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: And so make those small tweaks and be consistent.
- 40:28unknown: Okay.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 40:30SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, Anthony, again, thank you again for joining us and sharing your story behind the scenes of Building Sparks Media Agency.
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: Any last words for the uh listening audience before we go to sign off?
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, you're giving me an open-ended hot mic opportunity.
