- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:19Speaker 3: We've got some big announcements coming today. NBA, NHL, football. Paul,
- 0:23Speaker 3: what's coming up?
- 0:24Speaker 4: A full slate of NBA last night. We're going to
- 0:26Speaker 4: overreact just a little bit. It's better than week one
- 0:28Speaker 4: NFL overreaction. Game one NBA overreaction. We've got a really
- 0:31Speaker 4: saucy Thursday night matchup. And bonus coverage, Tony Reale stopping
- 0:35Speaker 4: by PTI around the horn.
- 0:38Speaker 5: Reale right here.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Amazing. A big anniversary for PTI. Okay, let's jump into
- 0:43Speaker 3: tonight's game. Paul is a Chicago Bears fan, if you
- 0:46Speaker 3: don't watch the show, and it's Bears-Patriots. To me, Paul,
- 0:49Speaker 3: this feels like a we're going to find out where
- 0:51Speaker 3: these teams are game. If the Bears do not, and
- 0:54Speaker 3: I'm going to take it a step further, if the
- 0:55Speaker 3: Bears can't beat the Patriots, who are injury-riddled at home,
- 0:59Speaker 3: then I'm really worried about Chicago.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Yeah, Thursday night, it's always a referendum game. Two teams
- 1:03Speaker 4: that are 4-2, they could step up, step back, as
- 1:05Speaker 4: we like to say. But it is one of those
- 1:07Speaker 4: things where Both teams have had a lot of issues
- 1:10Speaker 4: in the month of September and early October. Drake May specifically,
- 1:13Speaker 4: not so much a team, but their quarterback. Caleb Williams
- 1:15Speaker 4: was an injury, but he got jabbed for his injury
- 1:18Speaker 4: and how he handled it, and the defense did nothing
- 1:21Speaker 4: to help the team out.
- 1:21Speaker 5: So it's two teams.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I don't know where you get into the quarterbacks in
- 1:24Speaker 4: a second, but right off the bat, I'd like to
- 1:26Speaker 4: ask you, before tonight's game starts, can you picture either
- 1:30Speaker 4: of these two teams in.
- 1:30Speaker 5: The Super Bowl as of now?
- 1:32Speaker 3: One of them, I can. I can picture the Bears.
- 1:36Speaker 5: In that division, because it's a bloodbath to get out
- 1:38Speaker 5: of there.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it's going to be a very, very even
- 1:42Speaker 3: NFC playoffs because... The NFC East is out. They're done.
- 1:46Speaker 3: The NFC South is out. I don't care if Bryce
- 1:48Speaker 3: Young is playing well. So you've got the NFC North
- 1:50Speaker 3: and the NFC West. Now, Minnesota will drop off because
- 1:53Speaker 3: they don't have good offense.
- 1:53Speaker 5: You don't like Minnesota at all?
- 1:55Speaker 3: No. I mean, if they make the playoffs, they'll get
- 1:58Speaker 3: beat like they did with Kirk Cousins as quarterback. Green
- 2:01Speaker 3: Bay always has injury problems. If they can stay healthy.
- 2:04Speaker 3: And then Detroit, Sean's Ben Johnson doesn't scare me, and
- 2:07Speaker 3: their defense is still terrible. So Chicago, to me, is...
- 2:11Speaker 3: should win this division. They have no excuse not to.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I look at Detroit with that defense as they're going
- 2:16Speaker 4: to be going uphill. Minnesota just seems mildly threatening, but
- 2:19Speaker 4: 5-0 is hard to ignore. Green Bay getting Josh Jacobs
- 2:22Speaker 4: back and playing really well the past couple of weeks.
- 2:24Speaker 4: To me, that would be my concern if I were
- 2:26Speaker 4: the Bears.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I agree with that. But then you get
- 2:28Speaker 3: the NFC West. The thing that Chicago should be excited
- 2:31Speaker 3: about is that the Rams have fallen off their two
- 2:34Speaker 3: and four. The Seahawks do not look like the defending champion.
- 2:36Speaker 3: They just played too long in the last offseason. They're
- 2:38Speaker 3: going to be hurt. And then the Niners are old
- 2:41Speaker 3: and we're already seeing the injuries pile up. Mike Evans
- 2:44Speaker 3: with his Achilles, Debo Samuel, you go down the list.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Christian McCaffrey's older running back.
- 2:50Speaker 4: So you're saying there's not a heavyweight that the Bears
- 2:51Speaker 4: have to go through because it would have been the
- 2:53Speaker 4: Rams or the Seahawks.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Well, right now I think the Niners are the heavyweight.
- 2:56Speaker 3: But I think the Bears, if they could stay healthy.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I mean, the issue for both these teams is can
- 2:59Speaker 3: they stay healthy.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Okay, the Bears last week, Caleb Williams has 300 yards.
- 3:03Speaker 4: On paper, it seemed like a really good game. But
- 3:05Speaker 4: then people started chopping it up and saying he was
- 3:07Speaker 4: throwing the ball right around the line of scrimmage, a
- 3:09Speaker 4: lot of dump passes, screen passes. Was that a calculated
- 3:12Speaker 4: effort to keep him away from the pass rush?
- 3:14Speaker 3: Of course, and it is the best thing that could
- 3:16Speaker 3: ever happen to Cal Williams. Ben Johnson's been dying for
- 3:19Speaker 3: him to play a little more like Jared Goff.
- 3:21Speaker 5: On platform, as they say.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yeah, a little more like Jared Goff, a little less
- 3:24Speaker 3: like Cam Ward. In college, Cal Williams can run around
- 3:28Speaker 3: like crazy, and he's been doing it in the NFL
- 3:30Speaker 3: as well. But the offense, I think, would be overall better.
- 3:33Speaker 3: If they could establish that consistent running game that they've had,
- 3:36Speaker 3: a couple injuries with the running backs, and that short
- 3:38Speaker 3: passing game, they'd be dangerous. I love this for the Bears.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, I think a lot of people do, too, because,
- 3:43Speaker 4: you know, Caleb Williams, more of a scrambler and a
- 3:45Speaker 4: keep-play-alive guy than a true runner. He doesn't put his
- 3:48Speaker 4: head down like Josh Allen does. But if you could, like,
- 3:51Speaker 4: not run for the first three quarters and save the
- 3:53Speaker 4: big scrambles, the big plays, the roll left, throw right moves,
- 3:57Speaker 4: like this, nice and easy, walk into the end zone,
- 3:59Speaker 4: that's no problem. But the cross-body throws they can make,
- 4:03Speaker 4: that's to keep the pass rush away.
- 4:05Speaker 3: And by the way, the big issue with the Bears
- 4:07Speaker 3: is they've never had a 4,000-yard passer, right? Right.
- 4:09Speaker 5: And they're not going to have one this year.
- 4:10Speaker 3: They're not going to have one this year.
- 4:11Speaker 4: He misses a couple games. He's not going to throw
- 4:13Speaker 4: for 300 yards a game. And they don't want him to.
- 4:15Speaker 5: No.
- 4:17Speaker 4: That 4,000-yard passer is such this mythology in Chicago and
- 4:19Speaker 4: outside of Chicago. They'd be fine if he did 3,800
- 4:22Speaker 4: yards and 25 touchdowns.
- 4:23Speaker 3: They scored 59 points week one against Carolina. I don't
- 4:26Speaker 3: think he threw for more than 250 yards.
- 4:28Speaker 4: They'd rather have two 1,000-yard rushers in Chicago than a
- 4:31Speaker 4: 4,000-yard pass.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Here's why I think this is such a big game
- 4:33Speaker 3: for the Bears. Because the Patriots are decimated. Let's look
- 4:37Speaker 3: at the injuries here. Romeo Dobbs out with the shoulder.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Morgan Moses and Elijah Veritaka on the offensive line. They're out. A.J.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Brown looked it. terrible last week. He still has his
- 4:48Speaker 3: ankle issue, and then there are other injuries all up
- 4:50Speaker 3: and down the defense and the offense. They are a
- 4:53Speaker 3: beat-up team on a short week traveling. How do you
- 4:56Speaker 3: make up for all those injuries when you don't have
- 4:58Speaker 3: time to practice?
- 4:59Speaker 4: Do you think that the Patriots are getting further away
- 5:01Speaker 4: from the Super Bowl after the loss last year?
- 5:03Speaker 3: No, I mean, I don't think they should have been
- 5:06Speaker 3: in the Super Bowl last year.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Technically, they were.
- 5:08Speaker 3: They avoided Josh Allen and Mahomes in the playoffs.
- 5:10Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's one of those things.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And Lamar Jackson.
- 5:12Speaker 5: It would have been that tag.
- 5:13Speaker 4: If they somehow pulled that Super Bowl victory out, it
- 5:15Speaker 4: would have always been lightly tagged. I would love to
- 5:17Speaker 4: get made fun of for winning a Super Bowl. That'd
- 5:19Speaker 4: be like the greatest thing of all time. But Drake May,
- 5:22Speaker 4: sometimes when we talk about Drake May, it's almost like
- 5:24Speaker 4: that Super Bowl didn't happen.
- 5:25Speaker 5: That Super Bowl appearance didn't happen.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Right. Yeah, no, I mean, listen, he's way better than
- 5:30Speaker 3: he was in the first month of the season. But,
- 5:32Speaker 3: you know, last three weeks, I think he's been the
- 5:33Speaker 3: leading passer in the entire NFL. You've got to give
- 5:36Speaker 3: him a little bit of time. I think he's very dependent. Oh,
- 5:39Speaker 3: there we go. Yeah, it's unbelievable how good he's been
- 5:41Speaker 3: the last three weeks.
- 5:42Speaker 4: He's got his head down looking at his subpar stats like,
- 5:44Speaker 4: look at my stats, Andrew.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Yeah, now the issue with Drake May is he's really,
- 5:48Speaker 3: really good against bad teams. And then against good teams,
- 5:52Speaker 3: he's mixed. Now, the truth is they could lose this
- 5:54Speaker 3: week and be just fine. It's an out-of-conference matchup. They're
- 5:57Speaker 3: going to feast on the Jets, hopefully for them, and
- 6:01Speaker 3: the Dolphins. So I think the Patriots are going to
- 6:03Speaker 3: be okay. But can you really picture Drake May and
- 6:05Speaker 3: the Patriots where they are right now getting through Patrick
- 6:08Speaker 3: Mahomes and Josh Allen again? No. And then maybe we'll
- 6:11Speaker 3: see Lamar Jackson. I think it's a much different year
- 6:14Speaker 3: in the AFC. Last year was just a weird anomaly
- 6:17Speaker 3: that got the Patriots to the Super Bowl so early.
- 6:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 4: All right, let's get to another thing that happened. While
- 6:21Speaker 4: we were doing Not So Fast yesterday, the news broke
- 6:24Speaker 4: that J.J. McCarthy, the former Michigan guy, the former Vikings guy,
- 6:28Speaker 4: is now the starting quarterback for your New York Giants, Perloff. Now,
- 6:32Speaker 4: this is a career rebirth for him, our chance for
- 6:34Speaker 4: a career rebirth. If this guy even plays B-level football
- 6:38Speaker 4: the rest of the year and goes. 500, he will
- 6:40Speaker 4: be looked at completely different NFL circles.
- 6:42Speaker 5: Now, here's my question. If somehow J.J. McCarthy, who was jettisoned,
- 6:47Speaker 5: I love that word.
- 6:48Speaker 4: From Minnesota, can keep this team afloat and keep them
- 6:51Speaker 4: in a playoff spot, how embarrassed should the rest of
- 6:53Speaker 4: the NFC East be?
- 6:55Speaker 3: Well, what kind of play? B-minus play?
- 6:59Speaker 4: I'm saying, yeah, well, B-minus play because, again, the way
- 7:02Speaker 4: the Giants are playing and the small lead they have
- 7:04Speaker 4: right now, it's almost like if they could hold serve
- 7:06Speaker 4: for a while and let the other teams rough each
- 7:08Speaker 4: other up.
- 7:08Speaker 3: But the teams they beat, like Tennessee and Arizona, I mean...
- 7:11Speaker 3: It's not impressive. No, it's not impressive at all. So
- 7:14Speaker 3: I don't think J.J. McCarthy is going to play B- football.
- 7:16Speaker 3: If you got B- football out of him, then I'm
- 7:18Speaker 3: giving John Harbaugh Coach of the Year. I think that
- 7:21Speaker 3: this week, the dream of J.J. McCarthy is going to
- 7:24Speaker 3: run into a roadblock. I think the Houston-Texas defense has
- 7:26Speaker 3: been bad, but they haven't faced quarterbacks like J.J. McCarthy.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Here are the quarterbacks that have been lighting up the Texans.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Dak Prescott, and Trevor Lawrence. Who
- 7:36Speaker 3: is not like those four players? How about J.J. McCarthy?
- 7:39Speaker 4: But he's got Isaiah Likely. He's got Malik Nabors. He's
- 7:41Speaker 4: got a serious head coach. And he's got a Texans
- 7:44Speaker 4: defense that hasn't had a complete game yet.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Well, that's because they've been going against these juggernaut offenses.
- 7:50Speaker 3: They're going to feast on the Giants. They're going to
- 7:51Speaker 3: be J.J. McCarthy's face from the opening snap.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I'm with you on this one because I do worry
- 7:56Speaker 4: that the J.J. McCarthy rebirth, which I'd love to see.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I love quarterbacks getting a second chance. I'm worried it's
- 8:01Speaker 4: going to stop before it gets started.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Yeah, here's the other thing about J.J. McCarthy. He's very physical,
- 8:06Speaker 3: so he can run to keep the Giants in the play.
- 8:09Speaker 3: But also, he can scramble like Jackson Dart. Jameis Winston
- 8:12Speaker 3: cannot scramble at all. So that gives him one advantage.
- 8:15Speaker 3: You know, the Giants want to win with defense. So
- 8:17Speaker 3: they're not going to— I know Brian Burns is out, but
- 8:19Speaker 3: they still have all those pass rushers. They want conservative play.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I'm just not seeing it. I think Houston has a
- 8:25Speaker 3: big advantage here.
- 8:26Speaker 5: But, Pearl, you're with me. You want J.J.
- 8:28Speaker 4: McCarthy to play well this season, to set up an
- 8:30Speaker 4: awkward quarterback offseason for the New York Giants.
- 8:32Speaker 5: You love awkward quarterback situations.
- 8:34Speaker 3: That would be cool. No, listen, but, I mean, do
- 8:37Speaker 3: you trust? Is Jackson Dartha quarterback of the future?
- 8:39Speaker 5: That's the situation now.
- 8:41Speaker 4: They have two guys under 25 who one has accuracy
- 8:44Speaker 4: issues and one has health issues. Both have issues and
- 8:47Speaker 4: haven't gotten paid yet for their second contract.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You're way ahead to say that. You already put J.J.
- 8:51Speaker 3: McCarthy into that piece of one half of football when
- 8:54Speaker 3: they were getting killed, by the way, and the defense
- 8:55Speaker 3: was in total prevent mode.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Don't poo-poo my awkward foreshadowing that I got.
- 8:59Speaker 3: I love this story. No, I mean, the real issue
- 9:02Speaker 3: is are you going to hold on to Jackson Dart?
- 9:04Speaker 3: Can you have any faith that this guy is going
- 9:06Speaker 3: to be able to play a 17-game season?
- 9:07Speaker 5: Yeah, injuries are a situation. How about the NBA last night, Pearl?
- 9:11Speaker 3: All right, I'm going to ignore your advice, Paul, and
- 9:13Speaker 3: I'm going to completely overreact. Whatever happened on opening night
- 9:15Speaker 3: at NBA, to me, that is gospel. There were some
- 9:18Speaker 3: incredible performances, starting in Minnesota. Anthony Edwards, one of my
- 9:23Speaker 3: favorite players, one of the most popular players, he was
- 9:25Speaker 3: unbelievable last night. Killing him with three-point range. He looked healthy.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I remember in last year's playoffs, he never looked like himself.
- 9:33Speaker 3: But to see him at full strength was so much
- 9:36Speaker 3: fun against Giannis in the heat. So I'm very, very
- 9:39Speaker 3: excited about Ant-Man. I'm jumping back on the Timberwolves bandwagon.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Before your next one, I love Anthony Edwards as well,
- 9:45Speaker 4: but he sometimes has a Mr.
- 9:46Speaker 5: October, Mr. November vibe.
- 9:48Speaker 7: Mr.
- 9:48Speaker 5: December Field. He goes full blast.
- 9:50Speaker 4: He plays like 38 minutes a game more than anybody else.
- 9:52Speaker 4: But it reminds me, not his game, but his usage.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Remember about eight years ago when Harden was doing this
- 9:57Speaker 4: in the regular season and had nothing left for the playoffs?
- 10:00Speaker 4: You might have to manage this guy against his will
- 10:03Speaker 4: later in the season to manage his minutes just a
- 10:05Speaker 4: little bit so he's ready for the playoffs.
- 10:06Speaker 3: No, I agree with that. I mean, he's actually had
- 10:08Speaker 3: a lot of playoff success, which is weird. He's been
- 10:11Speaker 3: way over his skis in the playoffs. So the team
- 10:13Speaker 3: will somehow make the conference finals.
- 10:15Speaker 5: What else from last night?
- 10:16Speaker 3: So Ty Jerome scored 45 points for the Memphis Grizzlies. 45.
- 10:20Speaker 3: It wasn't just the 45. He pulled up, it must
- 10:23Speaker 3: have been 10 feet behind the three-point line. Steph Curry land.
- 10:28Speaker 3: It was unbelievable. Just to have the confidence to shoot
- 10:32Speaker 3: from that distance amazed me. I liked Ty Jerome before,
- 10:35Speaker 3: and now I'm all in as one of the new
- 10:38Speaker 3: possible scoring stars of the NBA.
- 10:40Speaker 5: A couple things.
- 10:41Speaker 4: He looks like a 6'7 Jay Baruchel, the actor. Secondly,
- 10:45Speaker 4: Is his actual name Ty? Is it short for something?
- 10:47Speaker 3: We looked it up before the show, and it's not
- 10:49Speaker 3: short for anything.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Because I thought Ty was short for Tyler, Tyrone, Tyson, Tyrell, Tyrese, Tiberius, anything?
- 10:56Speaker 3: Nope, apparently not. He is Ty Jerome. Ty Jeremy Jerome.
- 11:01Speaker 3: I don't know what's going on there. But yeah, one
- 11:03Speaker 3: more to throw in. I predicted Luka as MVP yesterday,
- 11:07Speaker 3: and I am feeling that big time. I think Luka's
- 11:09Speaker 3: recreated the Mavs. The team's exactly where he wants it,
- 11:11Speaker 3: and they look great. great last night.
- 11:12Speaker 4: We're going to get to Luka versus Yaxel Lundenberg, the rookie,
- 11:16Speaker 4: the 24-year-old rookie. But my two things from last night
- 11:19Speaker 4: is the Suns are brutal. The Suns were down like
- 11:22Speaker 4: 45-12 at the quarter.
- 11:23Speaker 5: They looked awful.
- 11:24Speaker 4: And they've been getting further away from that Matt Ishbia
- 11:27Speaker 4: taking over and making us into a team.
- 11:29Speaker 5: They get worse every year. I think they're going to
- 11:31Speaker 5: be a lottery team.
- 11:32Speaker 4: My other prediction is Clippers rookie Keaton Wagler, or Vogler,
- 11:36Speaker 4: as I like to say sometime, will battle for Rookie
- 11:39Speaker 4: of the Year at.
- 11:39Speaker 5: Some point this season because... He's a shooter. He's a gunner.
- 11:43Speaker 4: He loves to get shots up twos and threes. He's
- 11:46Speaker 4: going to get a lot of play on this mishmash
- 11:48Speaker 4: Clippers team.
- 11:49Speaker 5: A lot of play.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I do not have a great sense of what's
- 11:52Speaker 3: going on.
- 11:52Speaker 5: He's going to fly up those charts.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Remember my Conn Knipple love early in the season that
- 11:56Speaker 4: people poo-pooed?
- 11:57Speaker 5: Conn Knipple went way.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Up the charts. Yeah, absolutely. No, I do not remember.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I'm surprised you're not talking about your Caleb Wilson love.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Oh, that's automatic.
- 12:05Speaker 3: He is so hyped right now. The Chicago Bulls.
- 12:07Speaker 5: That's MVP, not Rookie of the Year.
- 12:09Speaker 3: You know, Jackson Luxembourg got a lot of... Luxembourg is
- 12:13Speaker 3: a lovely country, though, in the European. He got a
- 12:15Speaker 3: lot of love as a key contributor to the Warriors.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And I know we're going to talk about... He talks
- 12:19Speaker 3: a big game, but man, the Warriors are not good,
- 12:22Speaker 3: which actually has me worried. But okay, so you're going
- 12:24Speaker 3: to put some money on that? I think you should.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Keaton Bogler?
- 12:27Speaker 4: But I want to pick him to finish second for
- 12:28Speaker 4: Ricky Deer, because they're going to go with one of
- 12:30Speaker 4: the big guys like the Bantzer, Peterson.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Well, yeah, maybe because they're better players.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Well, you don't have to get that. You don't have
- 12:36Speaker 5: to put that one.
- 12:36Speaker 3: All right. Coming up next, we have warm takes. I'm
- 12:40Speaker 3: going to go after Jerry Jones, who is once again
- 12:43Speaker 3: buying at the trade deadline. And we have much more
- 12:46Speaker 3: coming up next. Not so fast.
- 12:47Speaker 4: So if I were Keaton Wagler or Wagler, I would
- 12:50Speaker 4: have gone Wagler so they thought I was European.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Is he European?
- 12:54Speaker 5: No, not at all. But he would have gone.
- 12:56Speaker 3: I know he went to Illinois.
- 12:57Speaker 4: It's like Nick Stauskas. People thought he was European. Back
- 13:02Speaker 4: on Not So Fast. This is a midday pick-me-up. Pabst
- 13:04Speaker 4: and Perloff on NBC Sports. Check this out, Perloff. There
- 13:09Speaker 4: he is, DP.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Nice.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Times Square last night. Prime time. 7 p.m.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It rotated.
- 13:15Speaker 5: And then look at these two guys. That's Times Square.
- 13:17Speaker 3: That's us in Times Square.
- 13:19Speaker 5: That is not AI. That is an actual thing.
- 13:21Speaker 3: It rotated.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Thanks, NBC Sports. Thanks, SiriusXM. That is super cool, Perl.
- 13:25Speaker 5: You and I have both lived in New York City.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 4: We've been to Times Square to get bad pizza at
- 13:30Speaker 4: late night, but never thought we'd see our faces.
- 13:31Speaker 3: There are a lot of foreign tourists in Times Square.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Do you think they are not-so-Fast fans?
- 13:36Speaker 4: There already are, and it's just re-energized them, and they
- 13:40Speaker 4: saw us on the big screen.
- 13:41Speaker 2: That was very cool.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Yes. We were talking about Luxembourg in the last segment.
- 13:45Speaker 3: I understand we have a growing audience in Luxembourg.
- 13:47Speaker 5: They can't get in.
- 13:48Speaker 3: All the people in Times Square.
- 13:49Speaker 5: You can't walk the streets in Luxembourg.
- 13:51Speaker 3: By the way, I heard it's still up. I might
- 13:52Speaker 3: drive down there tonight. It's still rotating? Yeah, it's still rotating.
- 13:55Speaker 5: You drive, I'll go up, I guess.
- 13:56Speaker 3: All right, let's do it.
- 13:57Speaker 5: All right, it's time for warm takes here on Not
- 13:59Speaker 5: So Fast, Paps and Perloff. I'm going to go first.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Here we go, a little wormy.
- 14:02Speaker 4: If you're in Times Square, this will keep you nice
- 14:04Speaker 4: and toasty while you're looking at our big, huge heads.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I have a novel idea, and this is really wild,
- 14:09Speaker 4: so strap in on this one.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:11Speaker 5: An NBA ref should do this once in a while.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Call traveling.
- 14:15Speaker 2: It's okay.
- 14:16Speaker 4: No one's going to take away your stripes. No one's
- 14:17Speaker 4: going to take away your whistle. Traveling has gotten so
- 14:19Speaker 4: out of hand, it's become comical. If you watch it
- 14:22Speaker 4: on social media, some of the posts about traveling, I'm like, well,
- 14:25Speaker 4: that's clearly AI or someone doctored that video.
- 14:27Speaker 3: It's not.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Now, I understand the Eurostep. I understand the Stepback. I
- 14:31Speaker 4: know how that's developed over the years. But at some point,
- 14:34Speaker 4: you could put a cap on this. And what I'd
- 14:36Speaker 4: love to see, like, here's one from last night. If
- 14:38Speaker 4: you didn't see this, then you probably did. Here's LaMelo Ball.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Good player. He's now in Minnesota.
- 14:43Speaker 7: Wait.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I counted it. It's six and a half steps. Three, four, five,
- 14:47Speaker 4: six and a half. And don't give me that gather
- 14:50Speaker 4: the ball.
- 14:50Speaker 3: That's a gather, Paul.
- 14:51Speaker 5: But the gather is a carry.
- 14:53Speaker 4: So feel free to call a carry, which probably gets
- 14:56Speaker 4: called twice a year in the entire NBA, or call
- 14:58Speaker 4: a travel when it's that egregious. The fans will like it.
- 15:01Speaker 4: The players will get used to it. The NFL does
- 15:03Speaker 4: a thing every year. They have points of emphasis. And
- 15:06Speaker 4: now sometimes they over-call things in the NFL. We're not
- 15:09Speaker 4: asking for that. We're asking for extreme carries every year.
- 15:12Speaker 4: extreme travels to be called because when the play of
- 15:16Speaker 4: the night or the most watched play of the night
- 15:18Speaker 4: I checked on social media was this clip.
- 15:20Speaker 5: That's not good. That's not good.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Do you understand that this is the ultimate old guy take?
- 15:25Speaker 3: There's too much traveling in the NBA. I've heard it
- 15:27Speaker 3: since 1986.
- 15:28Speaker 4: Pearl, I'm telling you, I think young guys would back
- 15:31Speaker 4: me on this.
- 15:31Speaker 5: I think young people.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Would back me on this. You are 100% wrong.
- 15:34Speaker 5: I'm going to my daughter's high school today. I'm going
- 15:36Speaker 5: to gauge the room.
- 15:37Speaker 3: I've watched a lot of high school basketball. They love traveling,
- 15:40Speaker 3: and they love LaMelo after he hits a shot, turns
- 15:43Speaker 3: to the crowd and talks. This is modern basketball encapsulated,
- 15:46Speaker 3: and the youth loves this.
- 15:48Speaker 5: But that's the problem.
- 15:49Speaker 3: It's not a problem. It's the way basketball works.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Right, but it also takes away the really great ball handlers,
- 15:55Speaker 4: the people who could ball hand better than others. Now
- 15:57Speaker 4: you're just kind of stepping it over and using decent footwork.
- 16:00Speaker 3: I think it takes incredible athleticism to stop dribbling and
- 16:04Speaker 3: somehow scoot back six feet and do that. Yeah, no,
- 16:08Speaker 3: I actually disagree. I think any rule that helps offense
- 16:10Speaker 3: is good. And you've heard that take, too much traveling
- 16:13Speaker 3: in the NBA. It's been around for decades.
- 16:14Speaker 5: It has, but like.
- 16:15Speaker 3: It's getting ridiculous.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Giannis does it sometimes. He takes these steps from half
- 16:19Speaker 4: court where he never dribbles. And they're funny and they're comical.
- 16:21Speaker 4: But that one last night was almost offensive. That was
- 16:24Speaker 4: an offensive play.
- 16:25Speaker 3: The thing is, any rule that helps offense usually is good.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Like the NFL right now is calling holding every single
- 16:30Speaker 3: play on offense, and it's very bad.
- 16:32Speaker 5: That's bad.
- 16:33Speaker 3: That's very bad. I don't know what they're doing. The
- 16:35Speaker 3: officials need a big talking to. So I don't want
- 16:38Speaker 3: to see too much traveling calls. It'll ruin the sport
- 16:40Speaker 3: if they start calling traveling on guys like James Harden
- 16:43Speaker 3: and all that.
- 16:44Speaker 5: A little bit of this and send it the other way.
- 16:45Speaker 5: It'd be refreshing.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Is there anybody who encapsulates a modern ball player more
- 16:49Speaker 3: than Lomelo Ball, though? Zero. You know, the whole ball family.
- 16:53Speaker 4: More swagger than game, traveling a lot.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Well, actually, yeah. And he's actually a pretty good player.
- 16:57Speaker 3: I know Minnesota needs a second shot creator. So we'll see.
- 17:01Speaker 3: He looked pretty good last night. OK, I'm going to go.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Speaking of sort of controversial, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. Now, Jerry,
- 17:08Speaker 3: every year at the fall meetings, apparently holds court and
- 17:11Speaker 3: held court yesterday and talked about the trade deadline. Once again,
- 17:15Speaker 3: Cowboys will be buyers despite their 2-4 record. He said,
- 17:18Speaker 3: I'll be real clear. I could see being active at
- 17:20Speaker 3: the trade deadline if it was something that could help
- 17:22Speaker 3: the team this year.
- 17:23Speaker 5: Is that your Jerry Jones?
- 17:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll be real clear. No, that wasn't very good. Okay,
- 17:28Speaker 3: Jerry is basically saying we are going to be buying.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Here's the problem. You already bought. Your defense stinks. And
- 17:34Speaker 3: guess what the defense is composed of? Quinton Williams, Kenny Clark,
- 17:38Speaker 3: Rashawn Gary, Joey Porter Jr. Guys that you already traded for.
- 17:43Speaker 3: It's not the guys. It's not the players. There's something
- 17:45Speaker 3: wrong with the whole organization. It's the coaches. You got
- 17:49Speaker 3: to get more out of these guys. And I'm sorry,
- 17:51Speaker 3: Brian Schottenheimer seems like a great guy. Christian Parker, came
- 17:54Speaker 3: in with accolades. You know what? They're not delivering. You
- 17:56Speaker 3: don't need more players. You need to get the coaching
- 17:59Speaker 3: staff to make these players better. So definition of insanity, Paul,
- 18:03Speaker 3: doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.
- 18:06Speaker 3: If Jerry adds another name on defense, I don't think
- 18:08Speaker 3: it's going to fix them. I think the Cowboys need
- 18:11Speaker 3: to play with who they have. They need that coaching
- 18:13Speaker 3: staff to really work hard to get more out of
- 18:16Speaker 3: these players. All right.
- 18:17Speaker 5: A couple of things here.
- 18:18Speaker 4: I think that Jerry Jones has actually done a pretty
- 18:20Speaker 4: good job with the trades and the moves and the
- 18:22Speaker 4: players they've added. But like you said, They're not being
- 18:24Speaker 4: used in the right way or they're not being given
- 18:25Speaker 4: a chance to perform. And the defensive coordinator was given
- 18:29Speaker 4: the tools, was given the parts to build a defense, and.
- 18:32Speaker 5: It hasn't shown up. And we're not in week two anymore.
- 18:33Speaker 5: We're in week six.
- 18:34Speaker 4: The other thing about Jerry Jones is he's not the
- 18:37Speaker 4: master negotiator we think he is. He's the kind of
- 18:39Speaker 4: guy who would walk into a house and say, I
- 18:40Speaker 4: love it. Can I give a full-ass offer? When you
- 18:42Speaker 4: announce you're a buyer at the trade deadline... People are
- 18:45Speaker 4: going to try to fleece you.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Well, you know who the buyers are, though. Right. But obviously,
- 18:49Speaker 3: the only reason they're buying, I assume, is because the
- 18:51Speaker 3: NFC East is wide open. I just worry that they're
- 18:54Speaker 3: going to get another name on defense. And, you know,
- 18:56Speaker 3: they have this great offense, but they're always on the bench.
- 18:58Speaker 3: They're always sitting there watching the defense give up first
- 19:01Speaker 3: down after first down.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I'm going to save this for tomorrow about Max Crosby
- 19:04Speaker 4: and the Max Crosby situation.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I'm going to save this for you for tomorrow.
- 19:06Speaker 3: All right.
- 19:06Speaker 4: My next warm take is this. Kenneth Walker is leading
- 19:09Speaker 4: the NFL in rushing. He's on pace for really close
- 19:12Speaker 4: to 2,000 yards. And he's averaging over six yards a carry.
- 19:16Speaker 5: That's really galactic.
- 19:17Speaker 4: And on a team, not a team that doesn't have
- 19:19Speaker 4: a good quarterback and has to run all the time,
- 19:21Speaker 4: that has the best quarterback in the entire sport.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Now, Jasson Smith and Jigba, JSN, he's leading the NFL
- 19:27Speaker 5: in receiving. Not a surprise.
- 19:28Speaker 4: He'll probably do that again this year. Now, these guys
- 19:31Speaker 4: should be way up the MVP odds list. Neither of
- 19:33Speaker 4: them are in the top eight. After what they've done
- 19:36Speaker 4: so far, they're not in the top eight. And they're
- 19:38Speaker 4: not going to be because Vegas is realist. They know
- 19:40Speaker 4: they can't win MVP. You're going to get Offensive Player
- 19:44Speaker 4: of the Year. Guys like Walker, JSN, Bijan, and Jameer
- 19:49Speaker 4: Gibbs are all in the top four for Offensive Player
- 19:52Speaker 4: of the Year.
- 19:52Speaker 5: That's their category. It's only really quarterbacks that can win MVP.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Now, I know this is new, but it does seem
- 19:58Speaker 4: like time that a couple or a handful or a
- 20:00Speaker 4: block of voters kind of debunked this a little bit.
- 20:03Speaker 4: If somehow Kenneth Walker goes for 1,950 yards at 5.8
- 20:05Speaker 4: a clip, Let's give him the MVP because he's the
- 20:10Speaker 4: most valuable. He changed the franchise. It's not just a
- 20:13Speaker 4: quarterback award, and this trend has to be broken. But
- 20:16Speaker 4: you really have to force the issue. You have to
- 20:18Speaker 4: get 2,000 yards as a running back.
- 20:19Speaker 5: And that's almost unfair, even with the extra game.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Saquad did that and didn't get MVP.
- 20:23Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 20:23Speaker 3: So, but do you think that you bringing this up
- 20:26Speaker 3: might affect voters? I'm being serious. If there's enough sort
- 20:29Speaker 3: of a groundswell for, say, Kenneth Walker, if it's him,
- 20:32Speaker 3: then maybe that'll change things.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Look, I understand, and you'll back this up, that the
- 20:35Speaker 4: quarterback is the most important position in the sport. We
- 20:37Speaker 4: all could agree on that without the award. We could
- 20:39Speaker 4: all agree. But now take that away and say, okay,
- 20:42Speaker 4: Look at the sport and take away value.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Who had the best year in the sport? Well, it's
- 20:47Speaker 5: called value, though.
- 20:48Speaker 3: It's called the most valuable player.
- 20:50Speaker 5: Okay, let me ask you.
- 20:52Speaker 4: If somehow they had a high-end backup quarterback and nothing
- 20:56Speaker 4: in the backfield other than that, Mahomes, they can get
- 20:58Speaker 4: by without Mahomes for a few games, but I know
- 21:00Speaker 4: he's valuable to the point where Right.
- 21:03Speaker 3: You're killing your own point. If you had a choice
- 21:05Speaker 3: of who went away, Kenneth Walker or Patrick Moms, you
- 21:07Speaker 3: would say.
- 21:07Speaker 4: And I'm saying, I agree with that point. I understand
- 21:10Speaker 4: it's overwhelmingly clear. But let's move away from that and say, okay,
- 21:13Speaker 4: let's just sweeten the pot for everybody.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Well, why did you call it best player? No, see,
- 21:18Speaker 3: it's most valuable player. The other issue is, I think
- 21:20Speaker 3: they have to stop giving the ball to Kenneth Walker
- 21:22Speaker 3: so much. I think that's quite obvious.
- 21:23Speaker 5: That may happen in week 16.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Yeah, they have to slow down. And I think Vegas says,
- 21:27Speaker 3: you know what, he's on this right now. He's going
- 21:30Speaker 3: to wear down for the playoffs. And if you're the Chiefs,
- 21:32Speaker 3: you clearly need Kenneth Walker fresh in the playoffs. That's
- 21:34Speaker 3: why Seattle was so good. They would always save him.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And last year he was super fresh for the playoffs.
- 21:39Speaker 3: You know, the other, JSN is amazing, but the team's
- 21:42Speaker 3: not that good right now. So I don't think he
- 21:44Speaker 3: could get it either. And remember I said one guy,
- 21:46Speaker 3: if they were any good, Jalen Carter is by tenfold
- 21:50Speaker 3: the MVP of the Eagles. They'll never give it to
- 21:52Speaker 3: a defensive tackle.
- 21:52Speaker 5: He can't get it without ten plus six.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Actually, no defensive player since Lawrence Taylor has won it.
- 21:57Speaker 3: So it's not just running backs. But I think you're
- 21:59Speaker 3: going to influence people, Paul. I think that Kenneth Walker
- 22:02Speaker 3: is going to move up in the rankings.
- 22:03Speaker 5: First you're in Times Square, then you're changing things for
- 22:05Speaker 5: Kenneth Walker.
- 22:05Speaker 3: And why did you get in Times Square and do
- 22:07Speaker 3: a Kenneth Walker for MVP? Kind of like Joey Harrington
- 22:10Speaker 3: and the Heisman back in the day.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Yeah, let's see how that works out.
- 22:12Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to go to the Ravens for my
- 22:13Speaker 3: next warm take. Now, you might be panicking about the Ravens.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson was at practice this week but limped off
- 22:19Speaker 3: the field. Doesn't look like he's ready to play or
- 22:22Speaker 3: play at full strength. You know what? I am okay
- 22:26Speaker 3: if the Ravens fall back a little bit. Now, remember
- 22:29Speaker 3: when they made the Super Bowl in 2000 and 2012?
- 22:32Speaker 3: Nobody saw those runs coming, and they did it mostly
- 22:35Speaker 3: on the road. They won one wild card each year,
- 22:37Speaker 3: then won three road games. This is a team that,
- 22:40Speaker 3: for some reason... When they're great during the regular season
- 22:43Speaker 3: and have home playoff games, they're disappointing. I think that
- 22:46Speaker 3: they're going to be a sneaky second half of the
- 22:48Speaker 3: season team. They have a lot of guys coming back.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Cam Juergens, who they traded for, will probably play this week.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Rashad Bateman's been hurt. Mark Andrews has been hurt. They're
- 22:56Speaker 3: going to be full strength. And Lamar will come back.
- 22:59Speaker 3: And maybe like Caleb Williams, he'll be better out of
- 23:01Speaker 3: the pocket. I think the second half of the season,
- 23:04Speaker 3: Ravens are going to be dangerous. I don't care if
- 23:06Speaker 3: they're 15-2 and hosting the AFC title game. Because you
- 23:10Speaker 3: know what? Mahomes has won on that field. I think
- 23:12Speaker 3: that you have to judge the Ravens at the end
- 23:14Speaker 3: of the season. So I slow play Lamar Jackson. Even
- 23:17Speaker 3: though I know they lost to Cleveland. I know they
- 23:19Speaker 3: have a really tough matchup this week with Cincy. I
- 23:21Speaker 3: am not worried. They're not going to fall out of
- 23:23Speaker 3: the playoff hunt, Paul.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I'm going to not so fast you a little bit.
- 23:25Speaker 3: All right, what do you got?
- 23:26Speaker 4: You want to give him this weekend off? Fine against
- 23:28Speaker 4: the Bengals. You could pull out a victory there. You
- 23:30Speaker 4: must have him ready for the Bills. You must have
- 23:32Speaker 4: him ready to roll, take down the Bills, national TV.
- 23:35Speaker 4: and change the narrative and say, oh, these guys are
- 23:37Speaker 4: back again. I don't want to rest him for that
- 23:39Speaker 4: Bills game.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Why?
- 23:41Speaker 3: That might be rest him against the good teams and
- 23:43Speaker 3: play him against the bad teams.
- 23:44Speaker 4: No, full blast, back in business, learn about the Bills defense.
- 23:47Speaker 4: All right, we'll get back to that more later and
- 23:49Speaker 4: pick the Thursday night game. But coming up, coming up next,
- 23:51Speaker 4: this is fantastic. Tony Reale from PTI, Around the Horn,
- 23:55Speaker 4: anniversary of PTI.
- 23:56Speaker 5: He stops by. Reale next. Not so fast. I'm not
- 24:02Speaker 5: so fast as you.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean, we've been not-so-fasting each other. I
- 24:05Speaker 3: think there's been three not-so-fasts.
- 24:07Speaker 5: Is reality going to, like, check our facts and stuff
- 24:09Speaker 5: like this and call out our mistakes?
- 24:10Speaker 3: Probably. Welcome back, Not-So-Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Papps,
- 24:15Speaker 3: NBC Sports Now and Peacock. Now, Paul, when we started
- 24:19Speaker 3: the show Not-So-Fast... One of the models we had, of course,
- 24:23Speaker 3: was part of the interruption. I think everyone in sports
- 24:25Speaker 3: looks up to that show.
- 24:26Speaker 4: Yeah, beyond an homage, we basically stole everything from it.
- 24:29Speaker 4: We always loved PTI growing up. Now we still watch
- 24:32Speaker 4: it every day. Not so fast, PTI. It's one of
- 24:34Speaker 4: our favorite shows.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's a really special night. It's the 25th
- 24:37Speaker 3: anniversary of PTI. And of course, a huge part of
- 24:40Speaker 3: PTI's success was Tony Reale. our good friend, often fills
- 24:45Speaker 3: in for Dan Patrick. Tony, what does this 25-year anniversary
- 24:49Speaker 3: mean to you? I mean, first of all, it feels
- 24:51Speaker 3: like it started yesterday, and I'm sure it feels that
- 24:53Speaker 3: way to you.
- 24:54Speaker 6: That show's initial title could be so fast because that
- 24:57Speaker 6: show moves fast, right?
- 24:59Speaker 2: That was the show.
- 25:00Speaker 6: I mean, how did we make 25 years? And I
- 25:03Speaker 6: feel even weird saying we. I did the first half.
- 25:06Speaker 6: did the first 13 years. I can't take any credit for,
- 25:09Speaker 6: for the success, uh, Andrew. No, for, for me, the
- 25:12Speaker 6: show was about relationship, relationship, relationship, right? That's, that's the
- 25:18Speaker 6: one thing why it endured because those guys are just
- 25:21Speaker 6: unique and special.
- 25:22Speaker 2: The other part of it, it's fun. It's funny. We
- 25:25Speaker 2: play games on that show. They play games on that show.
- 25:28Speaker 6: So, so for me, it was, it was also, it
- 25:31Speaker 6: met the sports fan, uh, where they were going, I guess,
- 25:35Speaker 6: in their head. Short attention span, quick. You don't like
- 25:39Speaker 6: this topic? Well, the next one's coming up next, and
- 25:41Speaker 6: there's a bell. And then there's a guy, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 6: wearing a good cop, bad cop hat.
- 25:46Speaker 2: You know, Tony.
- 25:47Speaker 4: I don't think you should downplay your role in this
- 25:49Speaker 4: because I think you were very important right off the
- 25:51Speaker 4: jump to that show because most shows... When they make mistakes,
- 25:55Speaker 4: they glaze over them or they edit them out. And
- 25:58Speaker 4: when Tony and Mike would make a mistake, they would
- 25:59Speaker 4: go to you and you'd call them out directly. You
- 26:01Speaker 4: wouldn't sugarcoat it. And it's almost like having an editor
- 26:04Speaker 4: in a newsroom and they were news guys. And I
- 26:06Speaker 4: think that made the show embraceable because you embraced the foibles.
- 26:10Speaker 2: That's very true.
- 26:12Speaker 6: And it's very smart of you to point that out
- 26:15Speaker 6: because these guys are newspaper writers.
- 26:17Speaker 2: I just had him sit down for my podcast. And
- 26:19Speaker 2: I tried to talk about PT. This is not us.
- 26:22Speaker 6: Even 25 years later, they're telling me this is not us.
- 26:25Speaker 6: This is great, but it's not us.
- 26:27Speaker 2: We're newspaper writers.
- 26:28Speaker 6: So, yes, the corrections page in the newspaper is where
- 26:31Speaker 6: the staff boy idea came from for Cornizer and Wilbon.
- 26:35Speaker 6: And I do think it is a special it shows
- 26:38Speaker 6: how special they are that they could take that.
- 26:40Speaker 3: Yes.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Not everybody can take that, guys.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Right. Yeah, absolutely.
- 26:44Speaker 2: So take the correction. Take the accountability.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I do think that is a great– every show should
- 26:50Speaker 6: still have that. Honestly, let's bring back Snap Boys on
- 26:52Speaker 6: all shows.
- 26:54Speaker 3: Okay, so you had Coronizer and Wilbon on your podcast.
- 26:56Speaker 3: I want to listen to it. I have a question.
- 26:58Speaker 3: I don't know if you got into it. Have they
- 26:59Speaker 3: changed at all in 25 years, especially Tony? I feel
- 27:02Speaker 3: like he's the same person today he was 25 years ago.
- 27:05Speaker 6: I tried to tap into this a little bit, and
- 27:07Speaker 6: they were– I mean, they told me they didn't even
- 27:10Speaker 6: remember when they met, which I can't believe. I remember
- 27:12Speaker 6: when I met you the first time, Paul. It was
- 27:15Speaker 6: at a roast for Dan in Chicago. I remember when
- 27:17Speaker 6: I met you, McLovin, the first time because you were
- 27:21Speaker 6: shirtless running through Brooklyn Bridge Park, and you'll never forget that.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Well, I think, Tony, what's interesting is that if you
- 27:27Speaker 4: go back when the show started, I was at ESPN
- 27:29Speaker 4: Network Radio, and Tony had his radio show. And Will
- 27:32Speaker 4: Baum would call in. He'd call in during the breaks,
- 27:34Speaker 4: and then we'd chop it up. And this morphed into
- 27:37Speaker 4: this TV show. But I'm wondering from you, you were
- 27:40Speaker 4: a very young guy at the time.
- 27:41Speaker 5: You were new in the industry. Wilbon's like a teddy bear.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Kornheiser is an intimidating person, especially back in the day.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I was wondering if you were intimidated back in the day.
- 27:50Speaker 6: They flipped, though, Paul. To answer Andrew's last question, they flipped.
- 27:53Speaker 6: And I thought it could be because Wilbon became a parent.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:59Speaker 6: And Kornheiser became a grandparent. And if I wanted to
- 28:04Speaker 6: apply a therapist chair to that.
- 28:06Speaker 2: It's a friend watching them.
- 28:08Speaker 6: When you become a grandparent, you become all of them.
- 28:10Speaker 6: When you become a parent, you've got to control things
- 28:13Speaker 6: a little bit more. And Wilbon even admitted to this.
- 28:17Speaker 2: He's gotten angrier in the world. He's leaned into curmudgeon.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I think Kornheiser has gone the opposite way. I know
- 28:23Speaker 2: we still love him for that.
- 28:25Speaker 6: And Larry David shares a similar– Bent, but we appreciate that.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Was I intimidated by Kornheiser to start? I wasn't. I
- 28:34Speaker 2: was a brazenly, I didn't earn it.
- 28:37Speaker 6: Confident young person unearned confidence i had as a 22
- 28:41Speaker 6: year old but there was something i would say regional
- 28:44Speaker 6: for me a guy growing up in new york and
- 28:46Speaker 6: staten island and new jersey and long island that i
- 28:49Speaker 6: that resonated with me but wilbon was a bear hug
- 28:51Speaker 6: of a guy he wanted to hug you and cornizer
- 28:53Speaker 6: but they both like the fight so even now you
- 28:56Speaker 6: know part of the love is the fight this is
- 28:59Speaker 6: why this show.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Has worked i said it's a relationship because it's a
- 29:01Speaker 2: married couple And we can.
- 29:03Speaker 6: All relate to either having that relationship in our life
- 29:07Speaker 6: where we have a significant other or we saw it with.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Our parents or whatever it is.
- 29:12Speaker 6: But they can still have, guys, the same fight they
- 29:16Speaker 6: had 25 years ago today.
- 29:18Speaker 2: It's just true.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Tony, you mentioned you're a New Yorker. Now, the Knicks
- 29:23Speaker 3: celebration has gone on for four straight months, basically. But
- 29:27Speaker 3: the other day, the other day, the Knicks-Sixers game, I
- 29:30Speaker 3: felt like the Knicks fans didn't care if they won
- 29:32Speaker 3: or lost that game, where in the past they've been
- 29:34Speaker 3: so intense. Is there a sense that we got our
- 29:36Speaker 3: championship and whatever happens from here on in is gravy? No!
- 29:41Speaker 2: No! Even more insufferable now.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Okay. No, no, no.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Even more insufferable.
- 29:46Speaker 3: I mean, yes.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Are they going to live and die with every game
- 29:50Speaker 2: and every quarter?
- 29:51Speaker 6: I don't think so. But they certainly are going to
- 29:52Speaker 6: make content outside the garden every game.
- 29:57Speaker 2: I think this has put.
- 29:59Speaker 6: their fandom into a little bit of a, of a
- 30:01Speaker 6: particle accelerator in some way that they have it now.
- 30:05Speaker 6: So they know they've got the, the, the chip in
- 30:08Speaker 6: their back pocket, but everybody wants more. I mean, I,
- 30:12Speaker 6: this is a special championship for, for me, for a
- 30:15Speaker 6: reason that this team, they didn't go the LeBron. We
- 30:19Speaker 6: got LeBron and he brought in Durant and he brought
- 30:22Speaker 6: in Curry. And next thing you know, we built a
- 30:24Speaker 6: super team out of, you know, whatever. No, this is
- 30:27Speaker 6: a team. Well, The star player is a son of
- 30:30Speaker 6: a former player and coach. This is a team of
- 30:34Speaker 6: guys from Jersey and guys from the five boroughs, Alvarado.
- 30:39Speaker 2: They have grit to them, and that is a lovable thing.
- 30:43Speaker 4: I think it's a great point by you, Tony, because
- 30:45Speaker 4: at different points in every one of these guys' careers,
- 30:47Speaker 4: people doubted them. Josh Hart was like this nice role player.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Jalen Brunson, he doesn't have the body to be an
- 30:52Speaker 4: NBA star. Dallas bailed on him. Every other guy on
- 30:55Speaker 4: the roster was bailed on by somebody. That's why last
- 30:58Speaker 4: year when we were talking about them on the Dan
- 30:59Speaker 4: Patrick Show, it's like it's.
- 31:01Speaker 5: A feel-good story in New York City.
- 31:03Speaker 4: It's not this middle of nowhere, but they were a
- 31:06Speaker 4: really likable national team, which you wouldn't think the Knicks
- 31:08Speaker 4: would be.
- 31:09Speaker 2: But the city views this team as their blood, I think, right?
- 31:13Speaker 6: And that's why this season may have a different ebb
- 31:17Speaker 6: and flow from fans. They may not die with every
- 31:20Speaker 6: quarter against Philadelphia. They may think, yeah, we got you
- 31:23Speaker 6: in a series. But they're going to be insufferable, and
- 31:26Speaker 6: that's good. You want your Knicks fans to be insufferable.
- 31:29Speaker 6: You want your New Yorkers to be insufferable.
- 31:31Speaker 5: Tony, before we get you out of here.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I have a lot of practice being that.
- 31:35Speaker 3: You're level.
- 31:36Speaker 4: You're like the concierge of New York.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Wait till you.
- 31:40Speaker 6: See the stool I sat on in my interview with
- 31:43Speaker 6: Gornizer Wolf.
- 31:43Speaker 2: I don't know what I was thinking.
- 31:44Speaker 3: It was eight feet high. I loved it.
- 31:45Speaker 6: It's the stat boy stool. I was like, oh, this
- 31:47Speaker 6: will be nostalgic. People are like, what are you doing?
- 31:50Speaker 6: You're lording over them.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm not. I just thought it would be
- 31:53Speaker 2: i was playing remember.
- 31:55Speaker 4: All right so the good news is in about three
- 31:57Speaker 4: or four weeks you're coming back to the damn patch
- 31:58Speaker 4: show studio to sit for dp that'll be a good
- 32:00Speaker 4: time before we get you out of here put your
- 32:02Speaker 4: host hat back on we don't know what's coming give
- 32:05Speaker 4: us either a pti assignment and around the horn assignment
- 32:09Speaker 4: we're ready you bloop us out whatever you think all right.
- 32:11Speaker 2: All right Well, let's do a buy or sell.
- 32:14Speaker 6: Buy or sell the Los Angeles Rams making the playoffs
- 32:21Speaker 6: as they are presently constituted, which is one of the
- 32:24Speaker 6: stunners of the NFL season. Around the not so fast
- 32:29Speaker 6: to you, Paul.
- 32:30Speaker 5: All right. I'm going to sum up the season and
- 32:32Speaker 5: I'm going to buy. I'm going to sum up in
- 32:33Speaker 5: one word.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Going to be fine. The Rams are going to be fine.
- 32:36Speaker 4: They have a lot of talent. Myles Garrett will be back.
- 32:40Speaker 4: As long as their quarterback is healthy, as long as
- 32:42Speaker 4: Pukunuku is healthy, and they find a little bit of
- 32:44Speaker 4: a running game, they'll be fine.
- 32:45Speaker 5: Don't bail on teams in September. Too many people do it.
- 32:49Speaker 2: It's October, though. That's the problem, Paul. Around the not
- 32:53Speaker 2: so fast to you, Andrew.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Okay. I am selling on the Rams because it's not
- 32:58Speaker 3: just Miles Garrett who's out. Now it's Puna Ford. Now
- 33:01Speaker 3: it's Byron Young. All their great defensive linemen are injured.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And the problem when you have a super team, Tony,
- 33:08Speaker 3: is you don't have any depth. All the guys are
- 33:10Speaker 3: at the top of the roster. What about the backups?
- 33:12Speaker 3: I am worried about this team. They're getting old in
- 33:15Speaker 3: front of our eyes. I don't think Matthew Stafford can
- 33:18Speaker 3: carry him. Poor Aaron Donald comes back to play football
- 33:20Speaker 3: and there's no one around him.
- 33:23Speaker 6: Well, to score the argument, I still think Paul needs
- 33:26Speaker 6: to get his month straight.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Other than that, not big on math.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Andrew gets the point and the win in this topic
- 33:32Speaker 6: for the moment right now. My dear friend, Bill Plaschke,
- 33:35Speaker 6: who guaranteed an undefeated season.
- 33:38Speaker 5: Oh, you would have lit up Plaschke for months.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Oh man, I played for moments like this.
- 33:44Speaker 5: Tony, it was great having you on the show. We'll
- 33:45Speaker 5: see you in a few weeks in studio.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't wait.
- 33:47Speaker 2: It was great having you guys.
- 33:48Speaker 3: Bye, guys. Thanks, Tony.
- 33:49Speaker 5: That's fun.
- 33:50Speaker 4: And, you know, it was really important, you know, when
- 33:52Speaker 4: they started PTI and they brought in stat boy Tony Reale,
- 33:55Speaker 4: I really mean that.
- 33:56Speaker 5: It was like, oh, he's going to correct them in
- 33:58Speaker 5: the moment.
- 33:59Speaker 4: These two heavyweights of journalism, these big-time new TV guys,
- 34:02Speaker 4: and this new guy who never heard them is correcting
- 34:05Speaker 4: them with some snarkiness.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. No, he was great. And he was a
- 34:09Speaker 3: huge part of that show. And what you saw, the
- 34:11Speaker 3: transition to Around the Horn made so much sense at
- 34:13Speaker 3: the time. Think about it. Tony Reale, he was kind
- 34:17Speaker 3: of doing the Around the Horn thing with Tony and Mike.
- 34:19Speaker 3: By the way, I need a stat correction. I said
- 34:22Speaker 3: it in the moment. I had the wrong injury on
- 34:24Speaker 3: the Rams. Kobe Turner is the one who did it.
- 34:26Speaker 5: He already graded it out. He already judged it. You
- 34:28Speaker 5: can't tell me about it.
- 34:29Speaker 3: Okay, all right.
- 34:29Speaker 2: You won.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Well, that was awesome. We love Tony Rial. I can't
- 34:32Speaker 3: wait to see him in the DP show man cave.
- 34:34Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, we're going to go to
- 34:35Speaker 3: the DP show for an interesting NFL clip and get
- 34:38Speaker 3: you thinking. That's not so fast. Next.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Now, if we have someone here who corrects all our mistakes,
- 34:43Speaker 4: we're going to need a big, long segment for that.
- 34:46Speaker 5: Like 10 minutes at.
- 34:46Speaker 3: The end of the show. Yeah, yeah. 10, 12 minutes.
- 34:48Speaker 3: They'll be very busy.
- 34:49Speaker 5: Yeah, very busy.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Probably more important than us.
- 34:53Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff in the man cave.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Not Times Square right now, Perloff, having ourselves on the back.
- 34:59Speaker 5: That was very cool. All right, let's get to this one.
- 35:01Speaker 4: Dan Patrick had Albert Breer on today. Now, Breer, Monday
- 35:04Speaker 4: morning quarterback, knows everything about the NFL. And Dan asked,
- 35:07Speaker 4: you know, the back story is ACC, Big Ten, when
- 35:11Speaker 4: they do replay, the replay booth, the mics are hot
- 35:13Speaker 4: and you can hear what they're discussing. Will the NFL
- 35:15Speaker 4: do it? A lot of people want them to do it.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Albert Breer had the answers.
- 35:20Speaker 7: I think if some people at the league office have
- 35:22Speaker 7: their way, you'll see it before the end of the
- 35:24Speaker 7: regular season.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Before the end of this regular season? There are some
- 35:28Speaker 2: people at the league office who want that. And so
- 35:31Speaker 2: they've studied it.
- 35:32Speaker 7: They've looked hard at what the ACC has done, what
- 35:35Speaker 7: the Big Ten has done since the Western Michigan debacle.
- 35:39Speaker 7: And they are looking at ways to implement it. Again,
- 35:42Speaker 7: can you do it in season?
- 35:42Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 35:44Speaker 7: But I know there are people at the league office
- 35:46Speaker 7: who would like to see it put in sooner rather
- 35:48Speaker 7: than later.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Wow. Dan was genuinely surprised by Albert saying that it
- 35:53Speaker 3: could be this year. That makes me nervous, Paul.
- 35:56Speaker 4: It really does because I think the Western Michigan game
- 35:59Speaker 4: opened up the doors for everybody on this topic. I
- 36:01Speaker 4: said a month ago when the Western Michigan debacle happened,
- 36:04Speaker 4: I said the NFL will kick the can on this
- 36:06Speaker 4: as long as they can because they don't want you
- 36:08Speaker 4: to see what the people are talking about.
- 36:10Speaker 5: But they must think to themselves. Let's bite the bullet.
- 36:12Speaker 5: Let's be proactive. Let's do this sooner than people expect,
- 36:15Speaker 5: not later.
- 36:15Speaker 3: Well, I'll give NFL credit. They've been super aggressive on NFL,
- 36:19Speaker 3: whatever you call that, quick replay?
- 36:20Speaker 5: Yeah, gambling.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Replay assist.
- 36:22Speaker 4: Yeah, and gambling transparency, all that. I think the NFL
- 36:24Speaker 4: knows that for their gambling partners, their fans. People want
- 36:28Speaker 4: more transparency. Might as well jump on it now. Will
- 36:30Speaker 4: there be some bugs in the system?
- 36:32Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. And there'll be some confusion. But again, they've
- 36:35Speaker 3: been so good at replay assists this year, and there's
- 36:37Speaker 3: no rules to it, which I like as well. Okay.
- 36:40Speaker 3: In the NBA last night, Warriors forward Yaxel Lindenborg made
- 36:42Speaker 3: his debut. Had some run-in with Luka. And after the game,
- 36:46Speaker 3: told everyone what he thought of the Lakers star.
- 36:50Speaker 8: I had a lot of respect for him. You know,
- 36:52Speaker 8: just because of just watching. I didn't really watch the
- 36:54Speaker 8: NBA much. I just watched highlights. seeing him, you know,
- 36:56Speaker 8: kill people all the time. But then being in there
- 36:59Speaker 8: firsthand and just watching all the whining and complaining, I
- 37:01Speaker 8: lost all respect, man. Like, that was awful. Like, me
- 37:05Speaker 8: getting frustrated, it's not about, like, it's not about, like,
- 37:08Speaker 8: the foul being called. It's about, like, him complaining the
- 37:11Speaker 8: entire game. And then you get the foul called.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Congratulations, bro.
- 37:14Speaker 8: And then you talk to me like you did something great.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Bro, come on, dog.
- 37:17Speaker 8: That's just weak, you know. So it kind of, like,
- 37:19Speaker 8: it kind of threw me off for a little while because,
- 37:21Speaker 8: you know, like I said, I had so much respect
- 37:23Speaker 8: for him.
- 37:25Speaker 5: This is the fourth time I've heard or seen this cut.
- 37:27Speaker 5: I still couldn't believe it.
- 37:28Speaker 4: He starts out by complimenting Luka, and then he says,
- 37:31Speaker 4: he goes, he lost all respect for me.
- 37:33Speaker 5: They were battling pretty hard. It was good TV.
- 37:35Speaker 4: This guy is a 24-year-old rookie, not a 19-year-old rookie.
- 37:39Speaker 4: But for him to not just do it on the court,
- 37:41Speaker 4: but to say that afterwards so calmly, he wasn't losing
- 37:44Speaker 4: his mind. He's like, yeah, I lost all respect for
- 37:46Speaker 4: this guy. All he does is complain.
- 37:47Speaker 5: It was almost refreshing.
- 37:49Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, obviously he won a title. He's an
- 37:51Speaker 3: accomplished college player. You know, do you have a problem
- 37:54Speaker 3: with the fact that they lost the game badly?
- 37:57Speaker 4: No, because I think as a, I'm not a Lakers
- 37:59Speaker 4: fan or a Golden State Warriors fan, I find this
- 38:01Speaker 4: kid to be interesting. 23 years old, let me axle.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Heck of a player at Michigan. And for him to
- 38:06Speaker 4: have the stones to do it against Luka and then
- 38:10Speaker 4: say it afterwards.
- 38:11Speaker 5: Draymond Green even said, we need more of this. We
- 38:13Speaker 5: need more guys like this.
- 38:15Speaker 3: You know, the funny thing, too, about Luka, we know
- 38:16Speaker 3: he complains. But, you know, who else complained? Tim Duncan
- 38:19Speaker 3: complained all the time. And he's one of the greatest
- 38:21Speaker 3: players of all time. So I don't know how I
- 38:23Speaker 3: feel about this. I don't like the whining myself. But
- 38:25Speaker 3: this is pretty cool. Yeah, the back and forth. Is
- 38:27Speaker 3: he the new Draymond? I was thinking about that. I
- 38:29Speaker 3: don't know if he could go quite as far as
- 38:30Speaker 3: Draymond Green.
- 38:31Speaker 5: I mean, he didn't do this like a month into
- 38:33Speaker 5: his career. This is the opening night.
- 38:35Speaker 4: That's the way you launch yourself as a rookie. That's
- 38:36Speaker 4: how people get to know you.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Yeah, good side. Okay, you know what time of the
- 38:40Speaker 3: week it is, Paul.
- 38:40Speaker 5: I can't wait.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yes, it is time for Superlatives. Every week we do this,
- 38:47Speaker 3: the best and worst of the NFL. A little hyperbole.
- 38:51Speaker 3: All right, we're going to talk about expectations this week.
- 38:55Speaker 3: And the players who exceeded and came up short on
- 38:57Speaker 3: their expectations. I'm going to start with the player who
- 39:00Speaker 3: has most exceeded expectations this season. Let's go to Green
- 39:05Speaker 3: Bay and Matthew Golden, the wide receiver out of Texas.
- 39:09Speaker 3: First round pick, the first time the Packers have taken
- 39:11Speaker 3: a receiver in the first round since Javon Walker. He's
- 39:15Speaker 3: been awesome. Gone over 103 out of his last four games.
- 39:18Speaker 3: Not just that, he's completely transformed this offense. All of
- 39:21Speaker 3: a sudden, Jordan Love is comfortable and the whole team
- 39:24Speaker 3: looks much more explosive. I think you have to credit Golden.
- 39:28Speaker 4: He's a very interesting player because the first like 16,
- 39:31Speaker 4: 15 weeks of last season, he got almost no run.
- 39:33Speaker 4: And then he made a run at the end of
- 39:34Speaker 4: the season. He does have a little bit of the dropsies,
- 39:37Speaker 4: but he definitely stepped up.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Well, what I like is he'll drop a ball and
- 39:40Speaker 3: not lose his confidence, which is great. By the way,
- 39:42Speaker 3: my close runner up was Parker Washington in Jacksonville.
- 39:45Speaker 5: You love that guy.
- 39:45Speaker 3: But I knew he was going to be good coming
- 39:47Speaker 3: into the year. Okay, let's go on the other end.
- 39:50Speaker 3: Who is furthest below expectations? This one's obvious. You know
- 39:52Speaker 3: who I'm going to say, Paul.
- 39:53Speaker 5: No, I don't.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Justin Herbert.
- 39:56Speaker 5: Oh, I thought you were going to go counter.
- 39:57Speaker 3: No, there's no way to go counter. He was tied
- 40:00Speaker 3: with Patrick Mahomes for fourth highest MVP odds, and he's
- 40:04Speaker 3: one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. He has
- 40:06Speaker 3: a 68.8 rating, a 29 QBR. He's been legitimately terrible.
- 40:11Speaker 3: He has a million excuses, and none of them matter.
- 40:13Speaker 3: He's been awful.
- 40:15Speaker 5: By the way, what's with that chin strap? It looks
- 40:16Speaker 5: like a hammock under his chin.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Listen, the guy gets beat up every game. Maybe it's
- 40:21Speaker 3: not all his fault, but it's unbelievable how poorly he's performed.
- 40:24Speaker 5: Okay, next one. That's harsh, but true.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Okay. My player who is hardest to set realistic
- 40:29Speaker 3: expectations for. In other words, I have no idea. That
- 40:32Speaker 3: is going to be a guy who's been playing well.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Travis Hunter in Jacksonville. So last year he played primarily
- 40:37Speaker 3: or mostly wide receiver and some cornerback. This year, it's
- 40:40Speaker 3: been almost all cornerback. Then last week, he comes out,
- 40:44Speaker 3: and he looks amazing at wide receiver. He's the first
- 40:47Speaker 3: guy since Brian Dawkins to have an interception and a
- 40:50Speaker 3: touchdown catch in the same game. He was great at
- 40:54Speaker 3: wide receiver, which made me think, uh-oh, I'm not sure
- 40:58Speaker 3: he should go to all cornerback, because that's what all
- 41:00Speaker 3: the experts were saying. He looked like the best wide
- 41:03Speaker 3: receiver on the field. So now I'm really confused. I
- 41:06Speaker 3: do not know what to do with Travis Hunter, or
- 41:08Speaker 3: what to expect out of him.
- 41:09Speaker 5: I think he's hitting his stride.
- 41:10Speaker 4: More defense, just enough offense sprinkled in, so you remember,
- 41:13Speaker 4: you can't overlook him.
- 41:14Speaker 3: There was a play in the middle of the field, Paul,
- 41:16Speaker 3: where I said, you got to get him in on
- 41:18Speaker 3: almost every offensive snap, so I don't know.
- 41:20Speaker 5: You have to discipline yourself.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Okay, and now let's do a player who is exactly
- 41:24Speaker 3: who we thought he was, and that is Atlanta Falcons
- 41:27Speaker 3: running back Bijan Robinson, who is awesome, but come on,
- 41:31Speaker 3: we all knew Bijan was awesome, and he's almost exactly
- 41:33Speaker 3: who we thought he was. Second in the league in rushing,
- 41:36Speaker 3: And he's first in all-purpose yards like he is every year.
- 41:39Speaker 3: He is just consistently great. And I don't really know
- 41:41Speaker 3: what to do with him, Paul.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Well, he just shows up every week. I love that
- 41:45Speaker 4: he has Penix with him and Drake London stepping up.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Maybe it'll open the doors from a little bit.
- 41:48Speaker 3: But he always produces exactly this level no matter who's
- 41:51Speaker 3: a quarterback. Yeah, no, it'd be better with Penix. He
- 41:53Speaker 3: doesn't need Penix as quarterback. He's still good. But when
- 41:56Speaker 3: Penix is there, they actually win the game, which is important.
- 41:58Speaker 3: So that's superlatives for week six, seven, whatever we're at.
- 42:02Speaker 5: Whatever it may be. Who knows who's listening?
- 42:04Speaker 2: All right.
- 42:04Speaker 5: That's a good job by you.
- 42:05Speaker 4: Coming up next, questions from the back room of the
- 42:08Speaker 4: Dan Patrick Show, guys. Tune in next to hear that.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 42:11Speaker 5: Not so fast. Love questions from the back room. We
- 42:14Speaker 5: have no idea what's coming.
- 42:16Speaker 3: Yeah, those guys are crazy back there.
- 42:20Speaker 5: Questions from the back room.
- 42:23Speaker 3: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Pabst. Paul,
- 42:26Speaker 3: it's that time of the week. We have to reach
- 42:28Speaker 3: out to the back room. Questions from the back room.
- 42:31Speaker 5: Questions from the questionable people. I love this.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Absolutely. Our guy Dan Gardella is here with questions from
- 42:37Speaker 3: the back room. All right, what you got cooking, Dan?
- 42:39Speaker 5: Good afternoon, gentlemen.
- 42:40Speaker 9: Yeah, we got a couple more questions for you, so
- 42:42Speaker 9: we'll just jump right into it.
- 42:43Speaker 3: First question.
- 42:44Speaker 9: You guys love your football, both college and professional. If
- 42:47Speaker 9: you could choose, would you rather go to a game live...
- 42:51Speaker 9: Or sit on the couch and watch many games at
- 42:54Speaker 9: the same time?
- 42:55Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh. That's the hammer of all questions.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Is there enough information in that? Are you giving me
- 43:00Speaker 3: what kind of game is it?
- 43:00Speaker 5: What level of game we're talking about?
- 43:02Speaker 3: Is it raining?
- 43:03Speaker 9: We'll go sunny skies. It's your favorite team you get
- 43:06Speaker 9: to go watch live.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Oh, of course live.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Yeah, you got to go live.
- 43:10Speaker 4: But there's always that element of I'm missing 20 other
- 43:13Speaker 4: college football games whilst going to a live football game.
- 43:17Speaker 4: So while you have a good time, you can go
- 43:18Speaker 4: to the tailgate. If I went to a Notre Dame
- 43:20Speaker 4: home game against Miami, it'd be great, but you miss
- 43:23Speaker 4: everything else. There is that little bit of FOMO, even
- 43:26Speaker 4: though you're enjoying yourself.
- 43:27Speaker 3: Yeah, but that's because you go to Division IV football games, Paul.
- 43:30Speaker 5: There is no Division IV, but if there was, I
- 43:31Speaker 5: would go to those.
- 43:32Speaker 9: Listen, football is football at the end of the day.
- 43:34Speaker 9: I'm staying home. I want to watch as much as possible,
- 43:36Speaker 9: keep my eye on social media, see if any trending
- 43:38Speaker 9: plays are going on.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Oh, that's pathetic. You're not going to go out and
- 43:41Speaker 3: chant for your favorite teams and keep your eye on
- 43:43Speaker 3: social media? You know, they do have Wi-Fi in the
- 43:46Speaker 3: stadiums now, Dan.
- 43:47Speaker 5: It's not very reliable.
- 43:48Speaker 9: See, this is the kind of back-and-forth we like back here.
- 43:50Speaker 5: You guys are going in.
- 43:51Speaker 9: I like where we're going. All right, we'll stick on NFL.
- 43:54Speaker 9: We're a third of the way through the season. There
- 43:55Speaker 9: are some teams that, well, their playoff hopes are bleak
- 43:58Speaker 9: to almost nonexistent. To the fans of those teams, what
- 44:02Speaker 9: do you tell them to get them through the rest
- 44:04Speaker 9: of the season?
- 44:05Speaker 5: Enjoy Sunday.
- 44:06Speaker 4: Enjoy that Sunday and try to get a win that Sunday.
- 44:09Speaker 4: You're not going to the Super Bowl. There's probably 15
- 44:12Speaker 4: to 18 teams out there that have zero chance for
- 44:14Speaker 4: the Super Bowl. Try to get a win on Sunday.
- 44:16Speaker 4: Anybody could beat anybody. Watch the game in that vacuum
- 44:19Speaker 4: of remove hope, watch some football. Then watch some other
- 44:23Speaker 4: football and then go to bed because there's nothing happening
- 44:25Speaker 4: with your team.
- 44:26Speaker 3: So this is my situation now because I'm a Philadelphia
- 44:29Speaker 3: Eagles fan and the playoffs are unlikely. And even if
- 44:32Speaker 3: they do get the playoffs. So what am I watching for? Well,
- 44:34Speaker 3: first of all, you have a fantasy team and you
- 44:36Speaker 3: are a problem better, hopefully. No, I'm just kidding. But
- 44:40Speaker 3: you can have lots of interest around the sport of
- 44:43Speaker 3: football so you can enjoy all 32 teams.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Yeah, but you're hopeless.
- 44:46Speaker 9: Yeah, see, what I'm doing is if you have a
- 44:48Speaker 9: significant other, this is where you build up the good credit,
- 44:50Speaker 9: go apple picking, do the fall activities so that when
- 44:54Speaker 9: next year your team is back.
- 44:55Speaker 5: What's going on?
- 44:56Speaker 3: Yeah, but then you're not going to know how good
- 44:58Speaker 3: the line is, who you should draft. Again, April, you're
- 45:02Speaker 3: going to regret this strategy.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Dan, we could do an hour on this. Apple picking
- 45:05Speaker 4: has to be between 7 a.m. and 1 on Sundays,
- 45:08Speaker 4: 7 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. You've got to focus
- 45:11Speaker 4: on the game. Apple pick first.
- 45:13Speaker 5: Football for 12 hours later.
- 45:14Speaker 3: And also, you're single, right, Dan? You don't have kids.
- 45:17Speaker 9: See, that didn't need to be disclosed here.
- 45:19Speaker 3: I'm just saying, what are you doing out there in
- 45:21Speaker 3: the orchard?
- 45:21Speaker 5: We're putting it out there.
- 45:22Speaker 4: The ladies are going to love this from Not So Fast.
- 45:24Speaker 3: If you don't have kids and you're apple picking on
- 45:26Speaker 3: an NFL Sunday.
- 45:27Speaker 9: Depends how bad your team is, right?
- 45:30Speaker 5: If they're defunct, yes.
- 45:33Speaker 9: Let's go to the last question, guys. We're going to
- 45:36Speaker 9: go to baseball. You guys had the Brewers announcer on yesterday.
- 45:39Speaker 9: You guys talked to them. It was a great call
- 45:41Speaker 9: when they clinched their spot in the World Series. Right
- 45:43Speaker 9: on the spot, what would be your go-to home run call?
- 45:50Speaker 5: What's that one?
- 45:50Speaker 4: I think they used to do it on ESPN Radio
- 45:53Speaker 4: back when we were on the Dan Patchow.
- 45:55Speaker 5: Ram-a-lam-a-ding-ding.
- 45:56Speaker 4: It was like Faith Hill did a ram-a-lam-a-ding-ding, and we
- 45:59Speaker 4: used it as a home run call. So I would
- 46:01Speaker 4: sample from the great Faith Hill, who's still smoking hot, ram-a-lam-a-ding-ding.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I would just go, it's out of here. It's out
- 46:08Speaker 3: of here.
- 46:09Speaker 5: That's simple.
- 46:10Speaker 3: Nothing else? You know what's interesting? Jeff Levering did call
- 46:13Speaker 3: the final out of the NLCS. He said, Dan, that
- 46:17Speaker 3: he lost the ball in the lights and wasn't sure
- 46:19Speaker 3: if it was caught. That would be my fear, and
- 46:21Speaker 3: you're kind of a broadcaster too. I often see a
- 46:24Speaker 3: pop-up when I'm in the stadium. I'm like, oh, that's
- 46:26Speaker 3: out of here. I don't want to be that guy
- 46:29Speaker 3: who totally misjudges a fly ball.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Premature.
- 46:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true.
- 46:32Speaker 9: So I got a couple for you. I've been workshopping
- 46:34Speaker 9: them back here. I haven't told anybody this, so give
- 46:36Speaker 9: me your thoughts on this.
- 46:37Speaker 2: I got two of them.
- 46:38Speaker 9: First one is, that ball just got its wings. It's
- 46:41Speaker 9: a Wonderful Life Christmas movie.
- 46:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but it doesn't mean that ball is dying because
- 46:46Speaker 4: they're getting its wings.
- 46:47Speaker 5: It's going up to heaven, not dying.
- 46:49Speaker 3: This is why they pay you the big bucks.
- 46:51Speaker 9: And then the second one, like my ex-girlfriend, she's gone.
- 46:55Speaker 5: That's fun.
- 46:56Speaker 4: See, I don't know if you could do that every time,
- 46:58Speaker 4: but I think that would be a really nice old-school
- 47:01Speaker 4: SportsCenter teaser highlight.
- 47:02Speaker 3: That's a little Brockmire, which I like in a good way.
- 47:05Speaker 5: It's based off a true story, too.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you've got to.
- 47:06Speaker 9: Laugh at your past sometimes to kind of get through it, right?
- 47:10Speaker 5: Good job, Danny G. Great job this week. Really nice.
- 47:13Speaker 3: Thanks, guys. Thanks, buddy.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Oh, that was questions from the back room. We don't
- 47:19Speaker 4: know what's coming. I'm glad we don't.
- 47:21Speaker 5: Those are fantastic.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:22Speaker 3: And I regret some of my answers already. Of course.
- 47:24Speaker 5: I didn't even know what I said there some of
- 47:26Speaker 5: the times.
- 47:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 47:26Speaker 4: It's time for constructive criticism. Your feedback on social media.
- 47:29Speaker 4: Here's what you had to say. First one, Perloff.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 47:33Speaker 4: Are the Vikings really that good or just lucky thus far?
- 47:36Speaker 4: Kyler Murray will probably not pan out. So he asks
- 47:40Speaker 4: it and then debunks Kyler Murray.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I just looked it up. The Vikings, by the way,
- 47:45Speaker 3: their last three opponents, Tampa Bay, Miami, New Orleans, are
- 47:47Speaker 3: 3-14 combined that they beat. They haven't really played anyone.
- 47:50Speaker 3: They beat the Bears at a rainstorm. Not impressed.
- 47:52Speaker 5: If I set the overrunner at 8.5 wins. I'll go over.
- 47:55Speaker 3: It's already a 5. I do know math.
- 47:57Speaker 5: One more constructive criticism. Here we go. Lennon or McCartney?
- 48:01Speaker 3: Okay. I have my answer.
- 48:03Speaker 4: They're not saying Julian Lennon.
- 48:05Speaker 5: Sean McCartney?
- 48:07Speaker 3: Yeah. No, I'm a John Lennon guy a thousand times
- 48:10Speaker 3: out of a thousand. I don't need your pop music.
- 48:13Speaker 3: I know you wrote yesterday. John Lennon is a true
- 48:16Speaker 3: artist out of those two, in my opinion.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Yeah, I can't do it. I can't separate. It's like
- 48:20Speaker 4: bird or magic.
- 48:21Speaker 3: They are complete.
- 48:22Speaker 5: They're together. They're like this.
- 48:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. You're right. They don't work without each other.
- 48:26Speaker 3: But I do think it's a... Are you more of
- 48:28Speaker 3: an artist type? Are you more of a popularity kind
- 48:31Speaker 3: of guy?
- 48:31Speaker 5: That's a fair point.
- 48:32Speaker 3: I feel like I'm definitely the Lennon and you're the
- 48:34Speaker 3: McCartney of this not-so-fast duo.
- 48:36Speaker 5: I think I've just been insulted. It's time for the feel-good.
- 48:38Speaker 3: No, no, no, no. McCartney's way more successful.
- 48:41Speaker 4: It's time for the feel-good here on Not So Fast.
- 48:44Speaker 4: We'll chop this up tomorrow's show.
- 48:45Speaker 5: I think I was just insulted. Here we go.
- 48:49Speaker 4: There's Jeremiah Love going to a youth field Hanging out
- 48:53Speaker 4: with the kids there in Arizona.
- 48:55Speaker 5: Probably a little scalding hot.
- 48:56Speaker 3: Working out a little bit.
- 48:57Speaker 5: Getting some work in.
- 48:58Speaker 3: Getting some reps in.
- 48:59Speaker 4: Peppering some of the younger kids. He brought some shoes
- 49:01Speaker 4: for the kids. But that's really cool. Jeremy, I love
- 49:03Speaker 4: coming to the local parks, hanging with the kids, or
- 49:05Speaker 4: playing great school football.
- 49:06Speaker 3: He looks so happy. I love this.
- 49:08Speaker 5: Well, that's the most running room he's had all season.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's true. Yeah, I still don't know, by the way,
- 49:14Speaker 3: if he was worth going number three overall. It sure
- 49:16Speaker 3: doesn't seem that way.
- 49:17Speaker 5: You know, it's not against him. It's the decision to draft.
- 49:20Speaker 4: Him on a team that doesn't really have everything in
- 49:22Speaker 4: place to have a star running back.
- 49:23Speaker 3: I mean, we don't want to throw any wet blanket
- 49:25Speaker 3: on working with the kids. That's great. But I want
- 49:27Speaker 3: to see a little more production. Although they did show
- 49:30Speaker 3: some signs of life last week. All right.
- 49:32Speaker 5: On behalf of Paul McCartney, I'll sign off for today. Congratulations.
- 49:34Speaker 3: I can bet you're Paul McCartney. What's so bad about that?
- 49:36Speaker 4: Yeah, but you gave yourself John Lennon. You called John
- 49:39Speaker 4: Lennon as your guy.
- 49:40Speaker 3: I didn't say you were Ringo.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Congrats to PTI in 25 years. Tune in to the
- 49:44Speaker 4: Dan Patrick Show and then us tomorrow.
- 49:46Speaker 3: That's it.
- 49:46Speaker 5: Enjoy the football.
