- 0:30Hello, welcome back to the Easy Double podcast.
- 0:33We are on episode 28, Music. which I actually said that we
- 0:37were on last week. I think I just got a bit too
- 0:39excited last week and tried to skip one, but I did rename it.
- 0:43We were episode 27 officially when it came out.
- 0:46So I'm not sure you may have picked up on that.
- 0:48You may not have. But here we are, definitely 28
- 0:51this week, and I'm going to introduce Dean Menzies, who's
- 0:54fresh off the back of a rather remarkable interview that we're
- 0:58all quite starstruck over. Welcome, Dean.
- 1:01Hey mate, how you doing? Thanks for the early intro.
- 1:04It's normally Owen first, so I appreciate the early call out.
- 1:08Yeah, I know. So I'd bring you back to reality
- 1:11and introduce you to a chat with me and Owen rather than multiple
- 1:15time Olympian. Yeah, no.
- 1:17Well, thanks for sorting that out.
- 1:19Thanks for sliding into DMS and do what you do babe.
- 1:23What is it like? Fake it till you make it?
- 1:24Is that what they say? That's what we're doing here.
- 1:30Yeah, and I'll bring Owen in as well before we just get into
- 1:35that. So how are you there Sunday
- 1:36morning? Sunday morning here.
- 1:39I'm good. I'm on my, I'm on my summer
- 1:41holidays with our rest period now, so no running for me.
- 1:44But yeah, I'm good. Yeah, good.
- 1:47So just to kind of add some context to what we've been
- 1:50saying there, I'm not sure if you've seen on the socials or in
- 1:54the clubhouse, we opened up listener questions.
- 1:56We've done a big interview. Well, Dean done a big interview
- 1:59this weekend with Canadian record holder in the half
- 2:03marathon and North American record holder in the marathon.
- 2:07And we've all just been chatting for almost 45 minutes offline
- 2:11over like all of our takeaways. Like we're just so buzzing with
- 2:15everything he said. So we're going to be putting it
- 2:17out later this week. So yeah, keep your eyes peeled
- 2:20for that one. And Dean's done a great job in
- 2:22terms of getting getting the best out of camp.
- 2:25So yeah, we don't want to give too much away, but I guess maybe
- 2:27I wouldn't know, Dean, what were like some of the interesting
- 2:30things that you took away from it?
- 2:31Yeah, he was just very open and honest.
- 2:33I mean, I'm like, as we are like A and as I mentioned to him,
- 2:38right, like just a huge fan of running and sort of someone is a
- 2:41similar age to me. So I just recall he sort of
- 2:45burst on this onto the scene at the end of his college career
- 2:48when he sort of made the Olympics in 2012 and was running
- 2:51some quick times then. And it's part of the driven
- 2:55series, a YouTube series that where flow track sort of
- 2:58highlighted some of his what he was doing in training and sort
- 3:01of what got him good and he sort of made famous these triple run
- 3:03days. And so we got to talk about that
- 3:05and talk about his time at the Nike Oregon Project, which was
- 3:09really interesting. And and then sort of his sort of
- 3:13rebirth because he sort of had a tough period with injury and
- 3:17what he and transitioning to the marathon and, you know, become
- 3:21making it fourth in the world champs running the area record
- 3:24sort of what he did to do that. I sort of, I don't know you.
- 3:27I think you connect the dots yourself, absent information.
- 3:31So it wasn't until I actually got to talk to him and ask him
- 3:33how he did that he sort of unpacked how he did that.
- 3:36And he's got a sports science background.
- 3:38So he was quite, quite articulate.
- 3:40I thought with how he what he was able to implement and how he
- 3:44did it. It was, yeah.
- 3:46I I just personally had a really fun time picking his brain and
- 3:50listening to him share his story.
- 3:53Yeah, and one of the most exciting parts as well was
- 3:56almost at the end when kind of like you brought it back to
- 3:58present day and he spoke about his goals for like, the upcoming
- 4:02World Championships marathon. I was like, wow, fair play.
- 4:05Like so excited to watch it now. I taught that I feel like
- 4:11everyone can take something from the interview, whether it's like
- 4:15his mentality or just the way he looks at training and little
- 4:20things that anyone like you or I could take from his training.
- 4:24It just like, it's so simple, but it makes you think about it.
- 4:28He's like, thinks about a different way.
- 4:30I don't know. It's just, well, I took a lot
- 4:32from the interview anyway. And even like he ran, he's been
- 4:37running at such a high level and like the groups has been a part
- 4:41of like this stuff that goes on. And then groups like he mentions
- 4:45like it's just. Yeah, it is.
- 4:48It's crazy. Like you'd never expect it for
- 4:52the fact that you talked to someone about some of that as
- 4:54well. Like, yeah, I really, really
- 4:56enjoyed it for playing. I think we missed the trick as
- 4:59well, by the way, given that we're we're easy double set up
- 5:03on the back of like double run days and he spoke about his
- 5:06triple run days and we didn't tell him we'll have to rebrand
- 5:09to be easy triple. I did think about that and it's
- 5:13a bit of a spoiler, but like like how that he feels like he
- 5:17pioneered that idea, right. And part of it was about
- 5:20recovering like I I didn't realize I thought it was just a
- 5:23way to add in more mileage, which I mean it is in part, but
- 5:26it was also split it break how he breaks his day up to sort of
- 5:29handle the mileage was sort of part of the idea behind tripling
- 5:33versus a single long run. And yeah, sort of hearing the
- 5:38the method to it because on the outside 100 and 81190 miles a
- 5:43week does seem a bit mad, but then when you talk to him about
- 5:46it, it makes a lot more sense. Yeah, for sure.
- 5:48And also on that guys, I realized that in all of the the
- 5:52clubhouse launch segment last week where we talked about the
- 5:55clubhouse, what it is, why you should join etcetera, etcetera.
- 5:59I didn't actually give the the URL or the web address.
- 6:03So for anyone who who has yet to join, it's easy double clubhouse
- 6:07dot circle dot. SO and I'm like really happy
- 6:11with kind of how this week's gone because like there's quite
- 6:14a lot of people in there. We've been having some good
- 6:16conversations, like we've done the good poll on the the shoe
- 6:20choices, which was like kind of fun when we had the Mr. Brooks
- 6:24ambassador himself. And they're not happy that
- 6:26Brooks weren't a mentioned and we uncovered something when the
- 6:31GB teams were announced. Well, one of the listeners,
- 6:33Rachel, highlighted like about some, well, all, all women not
- 6:37being included in the marathon selection.
- 6:39And we had some really good discussions around that.
- 6:41And it's led to maybe like probing it a little further.
- 6:44So, yeah, it's been a good first week and I'm excited to see
- 6:48where we go from here. Well, and add to fact to the
- 6:51fact that some of the guys got to ask the questions to Cam
- 6:55Levens and Dean done it in such a way that it just slipped
- 6:59naturally into the conversation or Cam answered them without
- 7:02even realizing you. You busted them up.
- 7:05Well, Dean. Nice.
- 7:07Yeah, good talker. It was very easy.
- 7:09So in terms of this episode, jeez, we're going to do well to
- 7:12keep it short, but we've spent 45 minutes chatting offline.
- 7:15So let's go. We've got Jurich Diamond League
- 7:18final from the week. And then this weekend we've had
- 7:21Sydney marathon first year as a major.
- 7:24And then this morning in Perth, the streets were taken over by
- 7:27city to surf. We'll have training weeks.
- 7:30Owens done a race again. He's he's racing more frequently
- 7:33than Izzy back Doyle a few months ago.
- 7:36And then we've got a few news items to cover as well.
- 7:39See how far through that we can go.
- 7:42And we're going to bring a double trouble directly from the
- 7:44clubhouse because it seems that that's what you guys like
- 7:46speaking about in there. And we're grateful that you're
- 7:50you're raising them because it takes the heat off us.
- 7:52We can kind of deliver them and not be responsible for them,
- 7:55which I'm sure Dean will enjoy. So Diamond League then Owen is
- 7:59going to take us through. So Diamond League final in
- 8:03Zurich, wasn't it? Is the final right?
- 8:06We'll start off with the women's 800 and Wirro.
- 8:13Audrey Wirro won this in national record in 155.9.
- 8:18She's Swiss. Then Georgia Hunter Bell was
- 8:21second in 155.96 and Anne Bourgeois from France was third
- 8:30in 15697. So fairly tight between the
- 8:34front 2, but who does Roro run for?
- 8:40What brand is it on? It might be on, you know.
- 8:43Or Puma. Yeah, she, she's like under 20.
- 8:46She she ran in those European under 20s recently and I think
- 8:51she won gold in like 156 or 157 and like yeah, 155.
- 8:58Like I was looking at the all time list of the the times for
- 9:02this year and Hares and Georgia Hunter Bells times there are the
- 9:06second and third fastest this year.
- 9:09Then, Oh, potentially. Do you look at those two now and
- 9:11go is are they plus Keely the medal chances?
- 9:15I mean, you can never say never, but.
- 9:17That Mary Moira, she's totally fallen off this year, hasn't
- 9:20she? She's so hot and cold.
- 9:23And Sarah Billings was 7th in that race in 158.
- 9:27So I don't know, would Sarah be happy with that?
- 9:29Like it's on the league final at the end of the day.
- 9:31And I'd say it's good to be there, but still a couple of
- 9:34seconds off the winners. I mean, obviously, yeah, you've
- 9:37Keely to come into that. So you probably Keely won and
- 9:40then between 2nd and 3rd, 2nd and 3rd, therefore the medal
- 9:45spots in Tokyo. Yeah.
- 9:46Was Georgia Hunter Bell still tossing out between 8:15 or
- 9:50doing both, or is that the talk? Yeah, she's committed to the 8
- 9:53now is. The 8A better medal chance.
- 9:57I think that's what they've concluded if, excuse me, if she
- 10:01was to double, I think the 15 comes first.
- 10:04So they were thinking, Oh well, we fancy our chances most in the
- 10:08800, but if we doubled we might jeopardise that by running the
- 10:1215 prior. Right after this was the women's
- 10:151500. Eli Chipchurcher was first in
- 10:21356.99 and second was Jess Hull in 357.02 and 3rd was Linden
- 10:32Hall in 357.44. Sarah Healey from Ireland came
- 10:38eighth in that one. She ran 359.9 so Jess very tight
- 10:46with Linden. I wouldn't have put.
- 10:47I thought Jess was like way above Linden Hall, but.
- 10:51I feel like it's too she. Was yeah, she was running in
- 10:57quicksand. It was like 30 meters to go and
- 11:00Linda nearly gobbled them both up.
- 11:03The sort of Jess Hall sort of I think was what pace was it?
- 11:07Were they were they on for like 352 maybe?
- 11:11Yeah, yeah. About going into the last lap.
- 11:14Yeah, the commentator was calling it.
- 11:16Wasn't he 353 or something? Yeah, and she looked good and
- 11:20she sort of burnt off Chip Chicha with like 300 meters to
- 11:24go was clear with about I think was it 110 got got shot down by
- 11:30the lactic sniper, lactate sniper and was was in also.
- 11:34It's like that last 30 meters. There's like some good footage
- 11:37of her almost falling to the finish line and the chase pack
- 11:41nearly gobbled them both up. I'd I'd worry for Sarah Healy.
- 11:46It's like she's been on on a heater, as you'd say, Dean since
- 11:51since early on this year and it's so hard to keep it going
- 11:55for the like she's basically it's so hard to pick for the
- 11:57whole year. So she might have burned her
- 12:00match at boat ends, but we'll see.
- 12:03Come, come Tokyo, because basically anything can happen in
- 12:06Tokyo because it's going to be so warm and it might suit other
- 12:09people. Some people could come in, cook
- 12:11some people fresh. So you never really know.
- 12:14And I think one of the unfortunate things perhaps I
- 12:20need to check the where the rankings are because I think
- 12:23national selection for Australia isn't finalized yet, right?
- 12:26And so these, all of the winners of all these races were getting
- 12:29issued wild cards. And the commentators are
- 12:32explaining as the races were unfolding some of the
- 12:35intricacies of these because like, for example, is it Coleman
- 12:40that won the men's 100? He so he won the diamond.
- 12:44So he finished outside the top three in the US trials for the
- 12:50men's 100 meters. And so top three and you've run
- 12:54the standard or in the quota in the US, you get selected to go.
- 12:58So those three went, which excluded Coleman.
- 13:00But then who's the reigning world champion?
- 13:03Is it Noel Lyles? I think perhaps he chose not to
- 13:08participate in the US trial. So then he gets to go with his
- 13:12wild card, which is the being the former world champion.
- 13:17Noel Lyles then goes to the Diamond League final, is not the
- 13:21reigning world champion, finishes outside the top three
- 13:24of the US trials, wins the Diamond League final, gets a
- 13:27wild card, but his wild card doesn't trump the former world
- 13:32record wild card, so now he doesn't get to use it.
- 13:34So apparently these wild cards, whilst helpful, they don't trump
- 13:38a world championship wild card. So that was like a rare instance
- 13:42where you can't send five people from one country, but you can
- 13:46otherwise send 4. And so I think if Jess Hall won
- 13:491500 meters, she's not, there's no, the reigning world champion
- 13:53is not Jess. So she doesn't otherwise have a
- 13:55wild card. It would mean that Jess could go
- 13:58and then three other Aussie women could go.
- 14:00And I think perhaps maybe on rankings currently, the
- 14:02commentators might have mentioned, is it Georgia
- 14:04Griffith who ran the 3K? She might be sitting 4th.
- 14:08So if Jess had won that race, perhaps it might have made
- 14:11selection a bit easier in terms of selecting three other Aussie
- 14:14women to go. So it was sort of a bit of an
- 14:16unfortunate circumstance. She literally got caught on the
- 14:19line and so maybe Kenya now have the option of sending 4 athletes
- 14:23given that one now has the wild card.
- 14:25Or just thinking about it now, maybe Faith Kippy, Aegon's maybe
- 14:28the reigning world champion anyway, so maybe this doesn't.
- 14:31Maybe it's as similar as as Coleman's situation in 100
- 14:34metres, but all very complicated.
- 14:36And the commentators were sort of apologising during the
- 14:38recording as to how complicated this is.
- 14:40But bearing in mind, this is the first time that they've actually
- 14:44had a Diamond League final ahead of an Olympic Games, a World
- 14:46champs and the first time they've introduced this.
- 14:48So I think the fact that they've introduced this and the fact
- 14:51that they upped the prize money might be a positive about the
- 14:56only positive thing that maybe came out of the whole Grand Slam
- 14:59track meet. Like did they did they try and
- 15:02up their game and improve their offering to athletes off the
- 15:06back of that competition? Maybe.
- 15:08So like, I think this wild card concept was a cool idea.
- 15:13Yeah, it was. It was nice to see the is it
- 15:16Steve Cram maybe, who's usually commentates for these, at least
- 15:19on some of the coverage I watch. I think it is anyway.
- 15:21And he is nice to see him almost tying himself in knots trying to
- 15:26understand the riddles because I've felt bad that we met.
- 15:29We maybe haven't explained it so well, but the fact that Steve
- 15:32Cram can't get his head round it helps a little too.
- 15:36Yeah, and it's all new for everyone.
- 15:38And George Griffiths has already qualified through the 5K,
- 15:41correct? I think so.
- 15:42I think so. I think she are you?
- 15:44Yeah. I have to check.
- 15:48Yeah. Right, moving on to women's 3000
- 15:52Junior Mack the Bay Berlinet. Berlinet.
- 15:59Yeah she ran 840.56 to win the 3K.
- 16:05A second was Joseph Andrews who runs were on, she ran 840.95 and
- 16:123rd was Linkina Ambwa 8.8 minutes and then fourth was
- 16:20Georgia Griffiths. 8 was Hannah Nuttall in 844 and 9 was Rosie
- 16:24Davis in 846. So never heard of that Ethiopian
- 16:29one who won that race? Never heard of the girl that you
- 16:34that you tried to read out, No. I know Rose Davies, I don't know
- 16:39Rosie Davis, but. We're friends, yeah, so Rose
- 16:43might be a bit disappointed with 9th, but she's not that far off
- 16:48the other girls. Yeah, I.
- 16:49Don't think it was. It was pretty bunched for like a
- 16:52while, like quite slow and then yeah, it just got moving and
- 16:56like, usually. To be fair, Rose has got a good
- 16:58kick, hasn't she? As you say, it depends.
- 17:01Like she could be in, she could not have really tapered for
- 17:03this, thinking about a couple of weeks time and whatever.
- 17:06Like it's hard to take too much from this unless you had
- 17:10something major riding on it, as in you were trying to get
- 17:12yourself a qualification, then you know that it was an all in
- 17:16effort. But otherwise it's like no.
- 17:19I think that's what Jess Hall said in an interview, didn't
- 17:22she, That she her legs, because I asked her like, and I think
- 17:25she said maybe haven't run like that since high school and in
- 17:28terms of that much swimming in lactate, but said that maybe she
- 17:32came in with heavy legs. So that's what she'd look to do
- 17:34different come the world champ. Right on to the men.
- 17:37The men's 800, so this was won by Emmanuelle Wignani in 142.3,
- 17:45second was Max Bergen in 142.4 and 3rd was Marco Arap in 142.5.
- 17:55So I think this is going to be arguably the tightest race in
- 18:00Tokyo. Like anyone could could win it.
- 18:04They're all running super, super fast.
- 18:06And yeah, like Max Bergen, like second in a Diamond League
- 18:09final. I think he's on a heater as
- 18:12well. It looked like Wan Yani was
- 18:14going to get beat maybe at one point or it looked like it for a
- 18:17while, maybe like 300 meters or something.
- 18:19Because he just, he goes, doesn't he?
- 18:21Like his forms gone and like, his eyes are almost popping out
- 18:24of his head, but like he's just so gritty.
- 18:26He just does not let anyone pass him.
- 18:28And Dean, do you want to talk about the guy in 8th?
- 18:31Josh Howey just that he he didn't make it is that was that
- 18:36The Who we were sort of tipping to maybe make his way in?
- 18:39So yeah. So was it Josh Howey in the
- 18:44men's 800 and then the Goose in the 1500?
- 18:49They were The Who we originally thought were the ones to really
- 18:52benefit from these wild cards. But then as you learn more about
- 18:55them and you realize that countries can then send an added
- 18:58athlete as well to the extent they win, sort of means that the
- 19:00wild cards have even more carry, I suppose.
- 19:03So, yeah, obviously Josh Hoey pretty unlucky to miss out.
- 19:06What? What's he the current?
- 19:09He's not even the reigning. He's literally this year's world
- 19:11indoor 800 meter champion and has run I think a stack of some
- 19:17of the world's best times this year, yet not able to to make
- 19:21it. So yeah, maybe even if Bryce,
- 19:23like I'm pretty sure say you had two horses in that race for him.
- 19:27So Bryce Hoppel, his countrymen finished 7th.
- 19:29So if he won it as well, then that would I think that would
- 19:32might have been enough because then Bryce going to use the wild
- 19:34card perhaps and then he can come in on the.
- 19:37I think he finished fourth at the trials, but wasn't to be.
- 19:40So, yeah, sort of one of the first of the big names who were
- 19:44trying to get the ranking points to make this final to be
- 19:47eligible for these wild cards. But yeah, I think the wild card
- 19:50concepts just a really a really cool one.
- 19:53It's got a few angles to it and it just made, yeah means that
- 19:57this Diamond League final that otherwise we don't get all that
- 20:00excited for is a bit more relevant.
- 20:03Yeah, and like, talk about like the US system providing drama as
- 20:07in the trials, which like, I kind of I'm an advocate for
- 20:11because, like, it is drama and drama sells.
- 20:14But like, when you look at Josh Howie in the world rankings,
- 20:17like all the other countries are qualifying from the quotas if
- 20:21they don't have the standard and stuff, aren't they?
- 20:24And he's not even like in the top of 100 or whatever it is for
- 20:28the 800 meters. He's literally ranked like third
- 20:31or fourth in the world. But because he couldn't place
- 20:34top three at the trials, he hasn't been able to go.
- 20:37And then obviously can. It's just been a bit too much
- 20:40here, too much pressure and maybe a little bit too late in
- 20:42the season because you're seeing him maybe 2 to go with 2:50 to
- 20:47go. He kind of pulled out and went
- 20:49up onto the shoulder of like the lead one or two.
- 20:52And you're thinking, right, this is his move.
- 20:54And you could just see like he didn't have it and he almost
- 20:57just gave up. And you're like, it's quite sad.
- 21:00OK Next Men's 1500 which was won by Niels Laros in 329.2 which
- 21:10was national record. A second was Reynolds Chariot,
- 21:17Timothy Chariot's younger brother who ran 329.9.
- 21:21And 3rd was Vanuel Koich, the young 18 year old who beat Josh
- 21:29Kerr in London. He ran 3:30.
- 21:32So Timothy Chariot, he was fourth in 3:30 as well.
- 21:36So the top the top seven runs sub three.
- 21:40Well, some 331, which is just nuts.
- 21:46Yeah, this is like Nils Laris. You'd have to put him his
- 21:49favorite. He bet Some big names here.
- 21:51His kick is just like astonishing, it just obliterates
- 21:56the field. Yeah, that was insane.
- 21:59He looks so good with 100 to go. Must have worked with his high
- 22:02school Sprint coach on his sprinting.
- 22:08Yeah, So who you've Josh, Kurt. Come in, Jacob.
- 22:12Possibly? Like if you're Jacob, you're
- 22:14hardly going to run your first 1500 in the heats in Tokyo.
- 22:18Do you really do that? Well, did you see him and his
- 22:21team kind of asked for an entry supposedly to this and they were
- 22:25told no. And I've got my own conspiracy
- 22:29theory going that maybe they were just, they knew that they
- 22:32were going to get told no because the rules are the rules.
- 22:35And they're just trying to bluff all the other 1500 contenders
- 22:39into thinking, oh, shit, like we're all right.
- 22:41And Jacob off thinking he's going to just run the 5K, but
- 22:44he's asked for an entry here. He must actually be fit.
- 22:46I think, I think if you're like so much better and you you're in
- 22:50that shape, you maybe don't need to hit out.
- 22:53But I think if you're if it's marginal, how much better you
- 22:56are than everyone else that the hit out would be beneficial.
- 22:59Like, you know, like Keely Hodgkinson that ran was it a few
- 23:03weeks ago and that was her first run after a fairly long layoff
- 23:07and she ran 154. I feel like if she ran in the
- 23:10world champs for the first time in that shape, she wouldn't have
- 23:14needed a hit out. She's just so much better.
- 23:17Whereas I don't know, there's some the 1500.
- 23:20I don't know if anyone's so much better than anyone else.
- 23:23Are they? So I hit out if you're in shape
- 23:26would help I would think. And The thing is like the
- 23:29natural kind of theory is to go well, OK, if Laros if the the
- 23:36field, they're going to be able to beat Laros as kick, then
- 23:38they're going to have to make it like 327 race or 328 at least so
- 23:42he can't use his kick. But.
- 23:45Like how? Do you know he won't have one or
- 23:47how do you know he won't be there?
- 23:49And how do you know he won't have one at that point?
- 23:51Like the theory stands up like it makes sense and stuff, but
- 23:55you just don't know. Like Carl Hocker when he won the
- 23:58Olympics, do a year run that 327 and kicked down from nowhere,
- 24:04that was like a three second PB form or something at the time.
- 24:07So like no one knew that he could do that until he'd done
- 24:10it. But yeah, I think that's going
- 24:12to be the way that they're going to have to try and do it and
- 24:14they'll just find out on the day whether he comes past them in
- 24:17the last 50 meters or not. You have to think, though, like,
- 24:20because it was that Faneuil Kovich who beat Kerr at the
- 24:24London Diamond League, right? He was the one that sort of
- 24:26burst onto the scene earlier in the year and so did remember
- 24:29Habs. Was did Habs win?
- 24:31Was it Monaco or earlier in the year 3?
- 24:3527. Yeah, and then like the goose,
- 24:38what did he, he broke the record, the mile record indoors
- 24:42before Jacob did. All these guys I feel like maybe
- 24:46hit form at some point sometime earlier, like Owen said about
- 24:53the arch Lady Healy. Like, it's hard to stay at the
- 24:55top of your fitness. It feels like Laros is like
- 24:59coming into form at a very good time, right?
- 25:01So you'd have to, if you're betting it's probably him or,
- 25:04you know, Kerr always seems to peak at a very good time as
- 25:07well. So I don't know.
- 25:09You'd struggle to look past those two.
- 25:13Inger Britson as a dark horse, perhaps?
- 25:15Just a quick one, Reynolds Chariot and Timothy Chariot are
- 25:18not brothers. It was just a shit joke because
- 25:20they have the same second name right?
- 25:22Men's 3K Jimmy Grezier from France.
- 25:26He won in 736.7. Grant Fisher was a very close
- 25:32second in 336.8. Andres Almagrin he was third.
- 25:40The Swedish guy he ran 336.8 to. Grant Fisher ran 336.81 and then
- 25:49ran 336, 336.78 and so very, very, very, very tight.
- 25:55Other notable mansions. Green Blanks ran 33738.
- 25:59Sorry. George Mills came seventh around
- 26:02738.7. And so, yeah, blanket finish
- 26:06wasn't that. Yeah, we have a big.
- 26:08Who took it on first? Was it Fisher?
- 26:10I think so, yeah. Because no one, no one went with
- 26:12the, they didn't really go with the pacemakers, did they?
- 26:15And everyone was, they were just, and then it was just,
- 26:18yeah, who had the wheels. And Jimmy Gressier, who like, I
- 26:21think the commentators mentioned, you know, knows how
- 26:24to celebrate when he wins a wins a race.
- 26:26But you sort of don't see him winning track races, let alone
- 26:29Diamond League finals. It was a bit of a turn up.
- 26:32But yeah, it was really, it was really cool.
- 26:35Cool to see someone else win one of those races.
- 26:37And yeah, what a, what a change in like distance running like 10
- 26:43years ago, I'd say, you know, like we were sort of going
- 26:47through a walk through time. We're talking with Cam about
- 26:49like when he was at the peak of his powers in terms of around
- 26:53that 2012 Olympics. It was sort of dominated beside,
- 26:57say, Mo Farah and Galen. A lot of the best athletes,
- 27:01particularly in the men, say, 5000 meters was Ethio, Ethiopian
- 27:05men and Kenyans to to an extent, but maybe a lesser extent.
- 27:11It sort of stayed that way for a chunk of time, didn't it?
- 27:13Whereas like now it's all, you know, North American and
- 27:18Europeans dominating, which is pretty cool.
- 27:21Like in that race you've 9 different nationalities out of
- 27:25like the 12 athletes that ran out, which is which is pretty
- 27:29good to see. Yeah, and it's uncapped, right?
- 27:32Like if you're the best in the world, you would just be sending
- 27:35like that could all be from one country.
- 27:37So yeah, it's very cool. Yeah, I was looking on this one.
- 27:41Fisher and Almgren, they're 5 KPBS.
- 27:44They've both ran 1244 and Graciate has only ran, I say,
- 27:48only 1251. So like 7 seconds is a decent
- 27:52margin at that level. So it shows it was a pretty big
- 27:56upset. You don't know what your 3K
- 28:00split in a 5K race if you have to run 1245 like is it close to
- 28:05that 736 or what is it I. Think they're normally gone
- 28:10through? 7:50.
- 28:12Could be getting this wrong, but 730-9741 I thought in some of
- 28:16those races aren't they because 12:30 is exactly 62nd per lap
- 28:22and so you're adding you're basically running 60 ones, 60
- 28:25ones and change to run 1244. So then 7 1/2 laps at 730-7739.
- 28:30I think you're right. Yeah, so, oh, it's good to see.
- 28:35But that is the Diamond League and I think they pay down pretty
- 28:40well. I think is a top 10 get paid or
- 28:42something like that. Yeah, I think the fields were
- 28:45capped at 10 as well like that pretty a bit smaller than a lot
- 28:49of the races during the season it would be.
- 28:52Hard. Like we don't kind of consider
- 28:54all this the decisions the athletes would be making like,
- 28:57well, one they have to qualify to do this time in league final
- 29:00anyway. But a fair few of them who did
- 29:02qualify chose not to go because they wanted to stay in training.
- 29:06But if you're thinking like I'm a chance for 50 grand or
- 29:09something there. It's worth like Kam Myers, he
- 29:12stayed didn't he went to Australia before.
- 29:14He was qualified as well. Would you say he had a bit of a
- 29:18medical episode? I think.
- 29:19Heard that on another podcast actually.
- 29:21Yeah, poor guy. I think he was all right.
- 29:23He's just deodorated or some stuff like that.
- 29:26Yeah, it did sound a little bit worrying though.
- 29:30Like it's, it's not the fair symptom from dehydration, is it?
- 29:34Like, it's not. It's not exactly a mild symptom,
- 29:36shall we say. Yeah, a bit worrying, yeah.
- 29:38Something we have to worry about over here in Ireland since the
- 29:40heat waves and I'll, we have to stock up on electrolytes and all
- 29:44that sort of stuff because we're not used to it.
- 29:46Shout out Bix and the importance of recovery, right?
- 29:50Where are we going to next lads? We're going to, well, we're
- 29:55going like pretty much out my window and just a little bit
- 29:57further up the streets to Saint George's Terrace in Perth for
- 30:01Perth city to surf. So as we explained last week, 12
- 30:04K over rolling hills and I was looking at someone's driver file
- 30:08to kind of see what the damage of these hills actually are.
- 30:11So the first two KS in the in the race is 21 meters and 16
- 30:16meters uphill and then towards the end you've got 15 metres and
- 30:2227 metres uphill in the 10th and 11th case before being
- 30:26absolutely launched down 32 metres into the finish line.
- 30:31So the man who coped with it best was Dan Kanala and he ran
- 30:3537th win from Luke Base, our training partner, front runner
- 30:39representative in 38 minutes flat, so just 4 seconds behind.
- 30:43And Carlos Boss Aquino was third in 3828.
- 30:48For the women, Aaron Ramsden won in 4329.
- 30:53Amy Buckingham was 9 seconds back in 4338.
- 30:58And and under 16 athletes. Wow was third in 4528.
- 31:03Vivian Barley. What did I say?
- 31:06I just don't know. You just said it.
- 31:07An athlete, I feel. Like to know what it called
- 31:11Vivian? These days it's sort of like a
- 31:13name that's not, I don't know. Maybe it's maybe.
- 31:16Coming around. Maybe my subconscious was
- 31:19telling me that I might need permission from her parents to
- 31:21mention a name on a podcast. That's why I didn't say it.
- 31:24Once. You don't slide it once, you
- 31:26don't slide to our DMS. You're all right.
- 31:30No, no, let's stay on top of all.
- 31:34Right all. Right.
- 31:34So you've both ran this course before when you were in Luke's
- 31:39place last year, finishing second to the man who won as
- 31:42well. So that's back-to-back wins.
- 31:44So you can 4 seconds was the gap today.
- 31:47What was the gap last year? I looked actually this morning
- 31:50to see where I would have came last year, Dan Canal around 38
- 31:54flat and I ran 10 seconds slower.
- 31:57So it's faster this year. Yeah.
- 31:59Well, it looks like is this. This one isn't streamed or
- 32:02anything, isn't it not. It used to be, like I said, this
- 32:06was back in the day that had 4/12/21 and a marathon and it
- 32:11was all televised. And who's the citizen runner?
- 32:14Yuki Kahuchi? I think he's a former winner of
- 32:16it. Like it was.
- 32:18Yeah, it was, it was huge back in the day.
- 32:21And it would, and it was streamed like prior to it sort
- 32:23of having the marathon as well. It was just a city to surf and
- 32:26it was broadcast like Channel 7. One of the main broadcasters
- 32:30would show the race. But I don't think so, not
- 32:33nowadays. It's sort of like a few races
- 32:37they, you know, lost some momentum during COVID, but it
- 32:39sort of got back. But it's still not the same as
- 32:42what it used to be. So last year Dan Kanala sort of
- 32:46ran a tactical master class and just sat by me, and then once
- 32:50you got to the top of the hill, he just literally launched and I
- 32:53had nothing left. He could run it.
- 32:56This year, again, there's 4 seconds in between them and I
- 32:59don't think Luke Bait is the type of guy to sit behind them.
- 33:02So I'm imagining Luke Bait ran off the front.
- 33:05But yeah, no, like fast times. What's the record?
- 33:09Course record? 35 something I think I know
- 33:12Ranson's run under 36 minutes. Wow, right?
- 33:16Yeah, yeah. Over them hills.
- 33:18That is crazy. I think I've run 3730 maybe?
- 33:23Wow. You were second to Ramsden that
- 33:26year. I was second to chamber.
- 33:30This would be so a few years ago.
- 33:31Now it could be 6 years ago. And in the ladies race, is that
- 33:36winner a relation to Ramsden? Yeah.
- 33:39Yeah. I was wife.
- 33:41Yeah. Wow, fair play.
- 33:43Yeah, it was. It was annoying this morning.
- 33:45So I went out on my bike and I was trying to time it so that I
- 33:48would get back to City Beach or nearby City Beach for like the
- 33:53finish. So I could kind of watch the end
- 33:55of the race or see them coming down the hill and stuff.
- 33:57Because I thought I'll cycle like part of the course.
- 34:00And I slightly misjudged it, cycled out too far the other
- 34:04way. So I was chasing, chasing the
- 34:07race and I caught like the tail of the race and was passing
- 34:12through, obviously not on the course on like parallel roads
- 34:14and stuff. I could see them.
- 34:16And by the time I got to the finish area, just seeing the
- 34:19ladies winner, like kind of coming around the final corner.
- 34:23So I missed the man. But yeah, it was so bit so busy
- 34:26and stuff around there. There was like on City Beach Rd.
- 34:28that was all closed off and there was like must have been 30
- 34:32or 40 public buses. They're just like ready to go I
- 34:35assume ship people back to the city or to the nearest train
- 34:38station or something. Like this is fair enough, it's a
- 34:41big race, but I can Can you imagine what this city to surf
- 34:45in Sydney is like what, like 90,000 people in Bondi, which is
- 34:50just a pain to get out of on a normal day, never mind when
- 34:54there's like 90,000 runners there.
- 34:57Yeah, no, it's good. It's cool event.
- 34:58I like the the way like you start in the city and like you
- 35:01finish near like it's a cool sort of race.
- 35:05Again, I'm not sure. Is there any prize money though?
- 35:07Do they pay? I don't think they do, do they?
- 35:10Don't know if it's advertised, they used to.
- 35:12Did you get prize money last year?
- 35:14You pay £76 to enter the race and you don't get a single cent.
- 35:21I actually had to buy 2 T-shirts because when I finished all
- 35:24obviously all my stuff was in the city so I was just freezing.
- 35:28I was going to catch hypothermia so I had to like buy AT shirt
- 35:31from there. So they got like no I don't
- 35:35know, first might get paid I'm not too sure, but 2nd 100% does
- 35:39not get a cent unless they've changed.
- 35:41So they use yeah, again, when this was so Chevron's like one
- 35:45of the major oil and gas companies that are the major
- 35:47sponsor. There used to be quite a bit of
- 35:49price money in a lot of these races.
- 35:51But yeah, I think it that a lot of it's fallen away.
- 35:54I think I. Won the four wouldn't.
- 35:55Yeah. Yeah, they should.
- 35:58Yeah. Yeah, I think it's.
- 36:02I mean, there's still the, a lot of proceeds go to the active
- 36:06foundation. So there's certainly the charity
- 36:08elements still there and that's always, that's been consistent
- 36:10throughout. But I don't know in terms of
- 36:13prize money, in terms of whether or not they've.
- 36:15Yeah, moved away from it just being a fundraising event rather
- 36:20than competition and fundraising event.
- 36:22I. Think I'd like TD for charity,
- 36:25but sort of bullshit in a way like that that like it's a mass
- 36:27big oil company, yeah. Yeah, they make make decent
- 36:31margin. Couldn't just give £100 or even
- 36:33give your entry back to like the top three.
- 36:37Yeah. So how many years ago is this
- 36:40now? So say 10 years ago, say 2015,
- 36:43what you would have is you'd have a regional, it was almost
- 36:46like a Diamond League. So what they did is they'd have,
- 36:49and I think they had Karratha. So there's a lot of oil and gas
- 36:52assets out in a regional town of in the northwest of WA town
- 36:59called Karratha. They have, they had a Caratha
- 37:02city to serve, a Geraldton city to serve, an Albany city to
- 37:05serve, a Bustleton city to serve perhaps one more.
- 37:09And then that would have to, and then it'll culminate in the per
- 37:11city to serve. So that would be two weeks apart
- 37:13and they'd run A12K in all of the regional cities.
- 37:16And I think the prize money is like 2 grand for the win, 1000
- 37:19bucks per second, 500 bucks for third men's and women's.
- 37:22And then it would build up to the crescendo.
- 37:24That was a per city to serve. And they had more events and,
- 37:27and bigger prizes and stuff. And that was so cool.
- 37:29Like everyone sort of had a bit of like a winter series, People
- 37:33would sort of work out who's racing what and you'd hunt
- 37:36around trying to win a bit of prize money and people, the
- 37:39local towns would get up for these races.
- 37:41And yeah, that was when it was sort of at its best.
- 37:44But then, for whatever reason, it's fallen away.
- 37:48And fair enough, it probably it will cost a lot of money to put
- 37:51this on because the closing the roads and stuff.
- 37:53However like there are mass, mass participation on that.
- 37:57So I think like part of sponsoring a race should be that
- 38:02you definitely give some sort of prize money anyway, no.
- 38:07Well. Like Dan Kanala, Luke Bait, like
- 38:10you're trying to be professional athletes, like the meta train
- 38:14hours they put in a week to run a race like this and to not get
- 38:17a single cent, It's not fair. Carlos is fit though, isn't he?
- 38:21Yeah, it's great. In the back of his 227.
- 38:25Is he training for Anton in particular?
- 38:27I actually bumped into him at Lake Monger on Thursday, Said
- 38:31he's doing the Perth Marathon at the Perth Running Festival, so
- 38:36in October. I tell you what boys, this
- 38:39morning was not a good day to be injured.
- 38:42When you get up and you've got Sydney Marathon on TV and the
- 38:45whole, like, hype of it all weekend, and then I go outside
- 38:50to go on my bike and because my apartment's in the city, it's
- 38:54like that, like cool fresh air in the morning before, like
- 38:58anyone's awake before the city is like starting it's day.
- 39:02But then you've got all the runners scurrying around in the
- 39:05little city to serve T-shirts and stuffing a banana down the
- 39:09face and rushing to the start line.
- 39:11And I'm there, like just about to head out on a bike ride just
- 39:15battling my demons like, But yeah.
- 39:18I feel, yeah, yeah. It'll be worth it.
- 39:21You'll you'll come good. Sydney Marathon, do you know?
- 39:24Yeah, this is my turn to butcher a couple of names, I think.
- 39:30Here we go. So the winner was Ethiopians
- 39:37highly highlight Marie Miriam Kiros Kebidu.
- 39:44How's that in two O 6? OI, heard the commentators.
- 39:49Was it the fastest marathon run on Australian soil?
- 39:52Like how did someone run 20606 with that elevation?
- 39:56I find that hard to get my head around.
- 39:58That's insanely fast. And then second was Adisu Gobina
- 40:04Agar Agar and then third was to bellow and I can feel Owen
- 40:09excited for me to even have a go at this Rama Kang goanna IN20647
- 40:15from is it not even going to go at the country?
- 40:18But. Yeah.
- 40:21So yeah, some fast times out front.
- 40:23Did you guys catch the race? Any reflections on the the
- 40:26result? It looked like a beautiful day
- 40:27weather wise in Sydney. But obviously, as we know and as
- 40:30we've spoken about the the course itself is pretty
- 40:32challenging. I stayed up to watch the first
- 40:36hour and a half and then I got so fed up of the commentary, the
- 40:41ads, I was like, you know what, it's actually not worth it
- 40:43staying up anymore. And I went to bed the only like
- 40:47I was just looking forward to seeing how the Australians will
- 40:49play out. And you genuinely didn't see a
- 40:52single second of Brett Robinson have to Leanne Lisa.
- 40:58Yeah, No, I was just. Annoyed.
- 41:01Yeah, similar. To be fair, I started the 4:30
- 41:04AM all time and I put it on through 15 K into the race and I
- 41:09was like, oh, OK, like excited to see kind of like where
- 41:11Justin, Lisa and etcetera were up to and the camera just stayed
- 41:16on the front men's pack. But to be fair, like at that
- 41:20point as well, the wheelchair races were kind of finishing or
- 41:25like into the last 10K at least. And they're spending a lot of
- 41:28time on that. And like, I get that, like,
- 41:31obviously it has its place and stuff, but not in spite of a
- 41:34world major marathon. Like it's a tough one.
- 41:37And then they'll cut to the adverts, like you say, a lot.
- 41:39And when they went on an advert, it was a panoramic shot from a
- 41:44drone or a helicopter of the Sydney Opera House or the
- 41:46Harbour Bridge. And like, I know they've got to
- 41:49sell cities about Sydney as a destination, but like,
- 41:53everyone's tuned in to watch the race.
- 41:55If, if the people aren't Australian, then OK, they might
- 42:00be interested with the front of the race and how Kip Jogi is
- 42:03going to do and stuff. But from within Australia, which
- 42:06is the host country, there's been a lot of media and
- 42:09narrative around the Australian only race within the race.
- 42:13And it just, yeah, it was. It was a shame really because
- 42:16you didn't see any of it or even hear any of it until kind of
- 42:20like they got to the finish and you're having to follow how the
- 42:23race was unfolding by checking the splits on a bloody app or
- 42:28website. Yeah, it's a bit of a shame.
- 42:30Like I think we're not alone in terms of really wanting to see
- 42:34the like, because they've been so good in creating their pool
- 42:38in terms of building a domestic field both on the men's and
- 42:41women's is insane. Like you've not you wouldn't
- 42:44have seen it a head to head marathon race this deep on both
- 42:48men's and women's sort of outside a championship where you
- 42:51can only send three. Like it was pretty.
- 42:53It's so cool. So, but then to actually other
- 42:56than like a virtual tracker to not be able to follow it sucks.
- 42:59So like, can't you just split screen some of that stuff and
- 43:02just and run both races in parallel?
- 43:04Like how much money is being pumped into Sydney off the back
- 43:08of this event and you can't follow what you think is like
- 43:13some pretty main headlines? Yeah, just bitch shit.
- 43:15Like when they got into Centennial Park the man like the
- 43:19move started being made is around 30 K like you see in the
- 43:21group stretch and stuff. And then it they cut to a bloody
- 43:25interview that the commentator done with Kipchogi and Saffan
- 43:29Hassan outside the Opera House 3 days ago.
- 43:31And guys, that interview was painful.
- 43:34I actually felt sorry for his Sonic Jogia to be such true that
- 43:38like Kip Joe gives that you just agree in whatever Hassan said.
- 43:42It was, it was pain. It was.
- 43:45Imagine having his son and Kip Jogi like they're beside you and
- 43:49some clown interviewing them but like asking them totally
- 43:52irrelevant questions. Fucks sake.
- 43:53Should have got it, was no Cam Levin's interview, was it?
- 43:57Ryan would have flew over for free.
- 43:59You know, do you know what I was trying to like, compare it to
- 44:02another sport to make it make sense and like, I was thinking
- 44:05about football or soccer. It's like ourselves and other
- 44:11podcasts and media and running fans and stuff have kind of like
- 44:15built this narrative and the story around like the Australian
- 44:18storyline and these head to heads and stuff.
- 44:20And then when the actual live spectacle comes, like the
- 44:23actual, say, football match for example, it's like just running
- 44:27adverts all throughout it and you don't see anything.
- 44:29You just see what the full time score is.
- 44:31Yeah. But anyway, well, you'd need to
- 44:36read the women's result as well. Yeah.
- 44:39So, so this one I think went pretty well to the form book,
- 44:43right. So Sifan Hassan won in 2/18/22.
- 44:47Richard Koskai was second in two 1856 and work Nesh Ghomesa was
- 44:52third in 2/22/15. So first two had the two
- 44:57strongest PPS coming in and we're sort of clearly one and
- 45:00two, they're most credentialed. So yeah, sort of as you played
- 45:06out high profile athletes as well.
- 45:09Very good. I think a really good reflection
- 45:11on the Sydney Marathon. Those results, those results
- 45:13make sense. Incredible times given how
- 45:14challenging the course is, but not unsurprising given sort of
- 45:17how quick that they ran at Paris, which was also very or
- 45:23Sifan did at Paris, you know, and pretty what might have been
- 45:27somewhat similar sort of race, albeit not pace.
- 45:30So yeah, pretty cool. Doesn't it make you think when
- 45:33you see that Stefan and Koskai, they have run sub 219 and
- 45:38compare that to the world champ standard for the women was
- 45:412/23/30 which Brits and Australians alike have found
- 45:47difficult in running that standard.
- 45:49And these two just come to a very hilly course in Sydney and
- 45:53just like piss all over it. And it's not by any means a
- 45:56reflection of the athletes who are trying really hard to run
- 46:00the standard because it's a really tough standard.
- 46:02It's more So what on earth Saffan Hassan and Koskaya are up
- 46:06to. Like they're just outrageously
- 46:09good athletes. And then the Aussie men's race,
- 46:13so half 2 string sauce got the win to 1127.
- 46:18Tom Dicanto second in two 1325 Brett Robinson was third in 215
- 46:25flat. This series of other domestic
- 46:27guys whose strong performances as well.
- 46:29Fraser Darcy 2/17/24. Steve McKenna 2/18/26.
- 46:34Sam Clifford 221. Karen Perkins was 2/23/22.
- 46:39What are your thoughts on those results?
- 46:41Because we kind of all guessed that Brett would win, I think,
- 46:44didn't we? Yeah, yeah.
- 46:46I thought he, Brett was training really well.
- 46:48I thought have to maybe had the potential to run well.
- 46:50But given he DNF his last marathon, I still would have, if
- 46:55I was to pick one, would have picked Brett.
- 46:57Yeah, I think I've I've picked out a few of their splits here.
- 47:00And because again, you didn't see how the race went.
- 47:03So you don't really know. You have to look at the splits
- 47:05to see like where people were gapped and stuff and but have to
- 47:09look serve ran it pretty even. So as fast as 5K was 1502 off
- 47:13the line, the 1st 5K which is downhill.
- 47:16Fair enough. And then he kind of settled
- 47:17151115301535 and then towards the end he just drifted slightly
- 47:2415581635, whereas someone like Brett, he started the race with
- 47:29half to 1502 through 5, 1511, the next 5K split, the kind of
- 47:35side by side there. And then Brett's just kind of
- 47:39suffered a little bit maybe from K onwards.
- 47:42And obviously we'll kind of hear from Brett himself in terms of
- 47:45like what happened on the day. But Needless to say, I think he
- 47:50probably will be quite disappointed because not only
- 47:52did he not win, but he was also beaten to 2nd.
- 47:56He got passed by Tom Decanto. I think I was trying to figure
- 47:59out where it would have been. Somewhere towards the end though
- 48:01it was beyond K and Tom Decanto splits look very impressive
- 48:07indeed. So his first 5K which is the
- 48:09massive downhill one is 1522 and then his last 5K between 35 and
- 48:1540K he's around 1526. So like, fair play.
- 48:19That's incredible execution, isn't it?
- 48:22You'd wonder what happened to him at that between 25 and 30 K
- 48:26His his split is 17 O1, which is just like and not like.
- 48:31It's an outlier. Yeah, I don't know if it's
- 48:33misread something there. I sent him a message to say well
- 48:37done. He said he was.
- 48:39He said he felt like it was like he really loved it, loved the
- 48:43race and that he was sort of excited, you know, come 30K was
- 48:47trying to hunt down the guys in front.
- 48:49So I think he sort of knew there was a few people that sort of
- 48:53went out pretty aggressively with some of those paces.
- 48:55And so he sort of must have said himself for just running his
- 49:00race and then, yeah, letting them hoping that they would come
- 49:03back to him late. And so he was, yeah, he sort of
- 49:05had in the back of his mind who he knew who he was chasing down.
- 49:09And I don't know, 213 like as his run.
- 49:13Was it 211 high at Valencia? Like to be a minute and a half
- 49:16off that. Yeah, That's, that's pretty
- 49:20impressive. Like you'd have to think that
- 49:22maybe you can he can run quicker again, which is, which is pretty
- 49:26cool. Like that's, yeah, hard, hard to
- 49:29get your head around. Did Fraser Darcy, did he win
- 49:32Ballarat? He was second, so yeah, at
- 49:36Ballarat. So he, he, yeah.
- 49:38So he was just in front of us at Ballarat.
- 49:40And what did you run in Ballarat?
- 49:41218 mid maybe? So you're on faster here.
- 49:47Ballarat's tough course, you know, very tough.
- 49:49No, I think it's a very good run.
- 49:50Yeah, it's the 500 meters of altitude, obviously.
- 49:54I think that's a very good run. He must be very fit at the
- 49:56minute. And on the splits kind of things
- 49:58as well, I was looking at some Clifford because well, just
- 50:02because and then he went, he actually started quickest of of
- 50:06anyone. So Brett and have to kind of
- 50:09went through the 1st split together, but some Clifford was
- 50:11ahead of them. So then jeez, it looks like he
- 50:14had a tough day because he went through halfway in 66 and he's
- 50:18then went on to run 221. So that second-half must have
- 50:23been absolute torture. And that goes to show this is a
- 50:27good way to highlight because I have to and Sam were kind of
- 50:32down as debutant but have to and he keeps saying it himself like
- 50:37you've won the Australian race, hats off to you.
- 50:39Absolutely incredible. But it's not your debut, your
- 50:42debut, it was your DNF. Like you've stood on the start
- 50:47line before. That is what it is.
- 50:49But you wouldn't your second marathon.
- 50:50Well, you wouldn't get Australian champs.
- 50:52And I feel like Sam Clifford learned what Cam was saying
- 50:58about the marathon, that everyone else will hear it
- 51:01during the middle of the week. A tough lesson, I'll leave it at
- 51:03that. It just goes to show, like you
- 51:05find out in the marathon basically because he'd done some
- 51:08incredible training and like posted some ridiculous sessions
- 51:12himself and you are looking at it almost thinking like Jesus
- 51:16boy might have a chance. But it takes a few.
- 51:18Feel like in a way, the way he was going about it, he was sort
- 51:22of distressed in the marathon in a way that like he thought it
- 51:25was going to be all right. Like he was running like these
- 51:28crazy long runs. And he done an interview on the
- 51:32other podcast and I think he was so confident that he was going
- 51:36to just smash it out of the park.
- 51:38But like the marathon is just like, obviously I've never run
- 51:411, so I don't know. But it's just a different animal
- 51:44altogether. Like it just chews you up and
- 51:47spits you out if you disrespect it anyway at all.
- 51:49What's that saying? Fuck around and find out.
- 51:52It was, yeah, Cam's comments about like at 30 K and you
- 51:57being, you know, not in a good place.
- 51:59And the difference between that and an 800m runner, I thought
- 52:03that was pretty. That was pretty cool.
- 52:05As in an 800 meter you struggle for less than a minute.
- 52:08Where isn't a marathon? Poor Sam could have been
- 52:11struggling for 50. He's, yeah, he's thinking about
- 52:17life for an hour, regretting regretting your decisions for
- 52:21the better part of an hour. Meanwhile an 800 meter run has
- 52:24got about 20 seconds to be like, oh, I reckon I fucked that.
- 52:27I reckon I've gone out too hard. And then in the women's
- 52:35Australian Champs for the women's, Leanne Pompiani was
- 52:39first in two 2447, Jess Stenson was second in 2/28/56 and Lisa
- 52:44Wightman was third in two, 2934. So yeah, so I guess Leanne.
- 52:51So taste it, fellas. I I honestly thought that the
- 52:56180 K flu week was going to come back and bite her but that's an
- 53:01insane run isn't it 224 there? Yeah.
- 53:06So because what did she run on? She ran around that time, didn't
- 53:11she, when she debuted earlier in the year?
- 53:14Yeah, So what does she run on a flat Valencia?
- 53:18Mate it's pretty scary to think isn't it?
- 53:19Because I'll be honest, like up until now I hadn't thought of
- 53:23her as the same level as Izzy or Jess.
- 53:28But I'll be happy to eat my words here.
- 53:31And we're de solo. Do you know if it was just a
- 53:34group of them, the women or? So this was interest because
- 53:37literally I didn't have a clue even though I watched the race
- 53:41until before when I was like doing the agenda and stuff so
- 53:44far. I'll have a look into how it's
- 53:46actually played out. So I know they were together for
- 53:49I knew they were together for a while and I thought I want to
- 53:51see like kinda what's happened, interpret somebody data to find
- 53:55out how the race went. And yeah, they were together
- 53:58until somewhere between 30 and 35 K.
- 54:01And during that split, the put 34 seconds into her and then the
- 54:07next one she put another minute 40 in.
- 54:10But it looks as though Leanne kind of held pace whereas Jess
- 54:14really started to struggle. So her last 5K split, she ran
- 54:191914 and you kind of seen that as she crossed the finish line,
- 54:26she's laughing like because you're not aerobically hurt and
- 54:30by that point you just physically hurt.
- 54:32And like if you're slowing down that much, you're obviously so
- 54:35fit that that's not hard. It's just really hard on your
- 54:37body. And like she's almost crumbled
- 54:40over the finish line. So then I rolled it down and
- 54:43thought, well, she's beaten Lisa Wakeman into second, but kind of
- 54:47how was that going? And like Lisa was closing the
- 54:50gap fast in that last because the way it splits out, it does
- 54:55force up to 40K and then the remaining 2195K or something.
- 55:00And in that last 2.195 K, Lisa closed around a minute for Fiona
- 55:06and she's only ended up finishing like 40 seconds back.
- 55:09So another K and she had that. Cool hey and like like like
- 55:13these races and like people with different strategies and like
- 55:17the calibre of athletes like so good.
- 55:19So it's just such a shame that it's like you don't get much of
- 55:22that. You don't get to appreciate that
- 55:24as you're viewing, you know, disappointing.
- 55:27But anyway, one day. And it was nice to see that.
- 55:31Did you see on the finish line they were all kind of come
- 55:34together and hugging and smiling and stuff?
- 55:36Yeah, it was pretty wholesome moments.
- 55:39Lisa and Jess. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:43Fair play. Bygones be bygones.
- 55:46So on our predictions, I had to look.
- 55:48I got one out of four because we guessed the Australian winners
- 55:52and the overall winners. I can't remember.
- 55:54I think I backed Leanne and have to.
- 55:57I got the ladies, so two out of four.
- 56:00Actually, how did Lean Adams do? He's Mia.
- 56:03Yeah, I wonder if he was a day on that.
- 56:05Yeah, I feel like it was so anti climactic and anti climactic the
- 56:09whole stream and I don't know, I was expecting a lot more.
- 56:13We'll have to get rights to it for next year.
- 56:16Yeah, fly me over. That one's suspicious.
- 56:20That one's. That Moroccan guy.
- 56:24Yeah, what's his name, the race director, like Wayne Lauder or
- 56:28Lana or something? Yeah, bring in this ridiculously
- 56:32elite field and I won't let any of them make it to the start
- 56:35line. Just stay with them a month
- 56:37before the race. Just let me watch every move
- 56:40they make anyway. Well, thanks for that.
- 56:42That wraps up the results section.
- 56:44So training weeks, I think Owen is going to tell us about his
- 56:48race week. Yeah.
- 56:50So this was sort of my last week of like my sort of comeback
- 56:56training block, fat camp, let's call it.
- 57:00On Monday. I did just 45 minutes easy and
- 57:04then I done 10 by 8 second hill strides with the rest in that
- 57:10evening. So I'm not easy doubling any of
- 57:13these days. Tuesday was sort of my last
- 57:15session. So it was 3 by 5 minutes of 60
- 57:19seconds and I was hitting these 5 minutes in around like 310 to
- 57:233:15. And then I had 2 1/2 minute jog
- 57:27and then I had a 1K at 5K pace and I had a mayor here so I
- 57:35started the 1K Rep and obviously you guys know that my track is
- 57:42336 meters long. So I went through like one lap
- 57:47and I looked down and I watched to see how I was going and had
- 57:51my paused it. I hadn't actually started to
- 57:54rap. I was like no.
- 57:57So I was like do I keep on going or do I just stop?
- 58:01So I stopped anyway, took 30 seconds and then I went for that
- 58:06K again. And I think I hit like around
- 58:10258 per kilometer and with the satellite and like the track is
- 58:18marked that it's nearly 3 laps of the track is 1K.
- 58:23But the watch, the watch always beeps, let's say 50 meters from
- 58:27the line. So I know I have to be hitting
- 58:31like when my watch beeps, I should nearly be in like the 248
- 58:35or something to then run a 250. What's it, 5 or 8 kilometer?
- 58:42So yeah, it's sort of annoying in that regard, but it's still
- 58:46in the right session then. Yeah, just a little cool down
- 58:49Wednesday again, 45 minutes easy and then 8 by 8 seconds strides
- 58:57and I got needles, dry needles. And Wednesday evening, I sort of
- 59:03always get them like once a month and just to like really, I
- 59:09feel like that's really good for my calves.
- 59:11How much is that 3? £50 it's priceless if it keeps
- 59:15me healthy. It's cheaper than bloody, like
- 59:19the getting injured and all the stuff you have to do with that,
- 59:22isn't it, as you found out. Yes.
- 59:25Definitely. So like I feel I've gotten a
- 59:27routine where every second week I get a massage and then two
- 59:31weeks after that I get needles. Two weeks after that I get
- 59:34massage, two weeks after that I got needles.
- 59:36So I just stay doing that and it's working for me at the
- 59:39moment. Thursday I did at 35 minutes
- 59:43easy in the morning and then Friday was race day.
- 59:46So I don't know, 30 minute shake out in the morning, 6.4
- 59:49kilometres. And then I don't know why, like
- 59:52this was just a little local like 5K race, like it's my home
- 59:57club, like put it on. But I was more nervous for this
- 1:00:00race than I was for, like, the nationals.
- 1:00:05Do you think it's because you had something to lose?
- 1:00:08Like at nationals you sort of it doesn't matter where you come,
- 1:00:12if you run a good time, it's a bonus.
- 1:00:15Whereas this one you sort of you post at a time at nationals and
- 1:00:19so therefore maybe you're a little bit expected to win.
- 1:00:22Yeah. And I feel like, I feel like,
- 1:00:24'cause the place I'm in is so centered around like Gaelic
- 1:00:28football, and I used to play Gaelic football, people are
- 1:00:32like, why the hell are you running?
- 1:00:34Like, why are you not playing Gaelic football?
- 1:00:36So I sort of like in a way, I had a like a little point to
- 1:00:39prove just to show like, I'm not just messing about with this
- 1:00:43running stuff. Like I'm like serious about it.
- 1:00:45And I'll. So yeah.
- 1:00:46And it's nice to like. You were given a bloody
- 1:00:48appearance fee by your your. Club funny, yeah, No, it's nice
- 1:00:52to like start a show like the local community like that.
- 1:00:55I'm taking this running like pretty serious and I'll sort of
- 1:00:59lock goes into it. But yeah, I done my usual warm
- 1:01:01up. I've just 15 minute jog and then
- 1:01:04two-minute threshold, one minute jog, 2 minute threshold and
- 1:01:07again, yeah, I was feeling good. And then yeah, the race, it sort
- 1:01:12of starts with like a slight downhill and then like there is
- 1:01:15a big pinch for like the next mile and then you go downhill
- 1:01:19again and a little pinch again. So it's not like a dead flat
- 1:01:22course. So put it that way.
- 1:01:23And I knew that there was this like there was a guy who's able
- 1:01:28to run like 15 low in the race, so I was pretty cautious of him.
- 1:01:34So the first like kilometer downhill, I sort of just tucked
- 1:01:37in and sort of just floated down the hill.
- 1:01:39And then I sort of pushed it on the uphill.
- 1:01:44And yeah, I dropped him a little bit early.
- 1:01:47So I was just like front running it and ended up winning the
- 1:01:52race. I ran 1446 and that was a new
- 1:01:56course record, so it's nice to hold the course record as well.
- 1:02:01And it was nice to like sort of win my local 5K, sort of.
- 1:02:04I meant a lot. So yeah, happy with that.
- 1:02:09And I haven't run since I took Saturday off.
- 1:02:11I'm taking today off. I'll do a few jogs next week.
- 1:02:14But yeah, sort of like my break time.
- 1:02:16It shows is it second K? It's like 40 meters of
- 1:02:20elevation, so that's a pretty steep pinch, hey?
- 1:02:23No, it is. It was a it's a pole, so and
- 1:02:27fair to be fair, after that it's a nice downhill.
- 1:02:29But even like the downhill, it rattles your quads.
- 1:02:32Like I nearly prefer going up the hill and down the hill and
- 1:02:36you're trying to control yourself And no, like look, 1446
- 1:02:40on that course. It's sort of like it's a road.
- 1:02:41It's a road PB as well for me, like KPB.
- 1:02:44So no, I was happy with it. It was a lovely evening.
- 1:02:47So yeah, no, so I said it's just the arms again.
- 1:02:53They feel with lactic and I don't know if we need to like
- 1:02:57massage them out or something. But yeah, they started slowly
- 1:03:00building. Now it wasn't near as bad as the
- 1:03:03the 10 mile, but umm, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:03:07I must be using my arms more or just a little bit tense.
- 1:03:11I need to relax, do a Camel Evans on it.
- 1:03:14Just settle. Just swallow.
- 1:03:16Just so much a mass. Hold the gym.
- 1:03:19To clarify, you didn't get an appearance fee, at least as far
- 1:03:22as I'm aware, but you did say offline that you you swallowed
- 1:03:25their annual budget and prize money.
- 1:03:28Yeah, so like a lot of people are saying, oh, it's going to be
- 1:03:32a great payday for you and all this both because before the
- 1:03:36race they announced that there was going to be a prize for the
- 1:03:40course record and the course record before this was 1520.
- 1:03:45So in a way, I should, I probably should have done a
- 1:03:48mondo and just knocked a couple of seconds off it because it's
- 1:03:53going to be hard to beat next year.
- 1:03:56No, I yeah, it was a payday for me.
- 1:04:00But the next day I went up to nearly the top of Ireland to
- 1:04:06look at treadmills and I cashed out on a treadmill.
- 1:04:08So I'm. I'm in the negative again.
- 1:04:11You bought one. Yeah, Well, I'm, Yeah, I'm
- 1:04:14getting a treadmill. I'm getting a a techno gym one
- 1:04:17sort of an older it's not like one of the brand new ones, but
- 1:04:21yeah, it's after setting me back a good bit.
- 1:04:23So I need to find a few more races to try to win.
- 1:04:26I'll be paying it. I'll be paying it off for the
- 1:04:28next year. More to.
- 1:04:31And the garage has a. Have you made space in there for
- 1:04:33it? Yeah.
- 1:04:34So the garage is halfed now. So even though we're planning on
- 1:04:39putting the two dogs in another shed, but at the moment they're
- 1:04:42in the garage along with the barbecue in the freezer.
- 1:04:46So half of it is free for we're getting a treadmill and a Watt
- 1:04:51bike because it's inevitable I will get injured.
- 1:04:55So at least I'll have that to cross train.
- 1:04:57But yeah, I have to after this I'm going to paint the ceiling,
- 1:05:00put a second coat on the ceiling.
- 1:05:03I maybe start on the walls, but like the floor has a cut floors,
- 1:05:07concrete. I had to like paint over that
- 1:05:09because the concrete just leaves dust.
- 1:05:12So yeah, hopefully we'll get the treadmill late next week or the
- 1:05:16week after, but like I'm a no rush really because next week
- 1:05:19I'm just doing like little 30 minute jogs.
- 1:05:21So it'll be so nice to have. I can't wait to get it.
- 1:05:24That BBQ must be getting a a working out with this Irish heat
- 1:05:28wave going on. It got a good run out this year.
- 1:05:31It was as fair like use probably had the wettest summer, the
- 1:05:34wettest winter in a long time. We probably had the best summer
- 1:05:38in a long time. So yeah.
- 1:05:40There was. No.
- 1:05:41You're welcome. Yeah.
- 1:05:44I timed that well, leaving leaving using the rain for I'm.
- 1:05:48Not it does feel like it's been in a long wet winter day.
- 1:05:52And are they always this long and West?
- 1:05:55No, normally it's like today's weather.
- 1:05:58We normally get a few more days like today where it's, you know,
- 1:06:02low 20s and sunny. Like we don't think this has
- 1:06:05been a bit more wet than the normal.
- 1:06:07I mean, it's what are we? The 31st is officially the last
- 1:06:11day of winter. I think so Spring on spring.
- 1:06:14Because even like last week I was, I heard someone talking
- 1:06:17about, I can't remember which city it was in, another city in
- 1:06:20Australia anyway, and describing it as like a gorgeous spring
- 1:06:23day. And like at the time it was
- 1:06:26absolutely pissing down and freezing here.
- 1:06:28And I was thinking, oh come on, Perth supposed to have like the
- 1:06:30golden climate in Australia? We'll get there.
- 1:06:33It's coming. It's coming, right?
- 1:06:36I just saw the your cat climb over.
- 1:06:39I, I did say I don't know if it was in the clubhouse or
- 1:06:43elsewhere. People have been asking for a
- 1:06:45cat update, so all's well. There is demand for the cat,
- 1:06:48isn't there? To be fair.
- 1:06:50Yeah, all's well with gummy bear.
- 1:06:52He's taking over. He's the 5:00 AM alarm.
- 1:06:56The scratching the door down. You know, seeing as people want
- 1:06:59to hear about the cat, I'll tell about the cat story.
- 1:07:02It's what's going on. We might lose some listeners
- 1:07:04here. The other day I was in the
- 1:07:06office and Becky's bought this mad feeder forum whereby like
- 1:07:10when you're out all day, it can gradually dispense food or like
- 1:07:14on request, you can press a button LinkedIn the app.
- 1:07:16So it's also got a camera in it. And Becky had seen on the camera
- 1:07:20that the feeding machine was like this on its side.
- 1:07:24So like the camera was showing it had been knocked over.
- 1:07:27So obviously panic stations like the cat might not get food for
- 1:07:31the six hours or whatever. So on my lunch break I've walked
- 1:07:34home from the office to stand the feed the back up and ensure
- 1:07:38this poor cat doesn't starve to death.
- 1:07:40And then this soft boogers just knocked it over, got the lid off
- 1:07:45the top and ate all the food out of it.
- 1:07:47So that's why it was on its side.
- 1:07:49Not hungry at all. Yeah, who's having a fat nap?
- 1:07:53Was that Friday by any chance or?
- 1:07:56No, the other wouldn't have got away with it on Friday after our
- 1:08:01extended coffee. I wondered why you had to wrap
- 1:08:03coffee up is to to get home for gum bum.
- 1:08:08Gummy bear will be called Toby Bear in a bit.
- 1:08:10Yeah, right. And if you if you skip the last
- 1:08:1360 seconds, welcome back. We're back to the Easy Double
- 1:08:16podcast. And oh, and Dean, it's up to you
- 1:08:20whether you want to do training. We can talk about your injury or
- 1:08:22we can just leave it with Evan's training.
- 1:08:24Make it up to you. Now if you're happy to get out a
- 1:08:28box of tissues and sort of cry with me.
- 1:08:31So you want to talk? Yeah.
- 1:08:34Oh, I could, yeah. I mean, there's not.
- 1:08:35I mean, there's not a heck of a lot.
- 1:08:40I ran up until Friday, so I haven't run today.
- 1:08:43Did run yesterday, essentially. I think when we last spoke, the
- 1:08:48plan was just to sort of deload. So I stopped doing workouts and
- 1:08:51I continued that this week. I think I did, it must have been
- 1:08:57about 50 minutes steady on the way home.
- 1:08:59And then Thursday I went to the session at Munga, did all my
- 1:09:01drills and strides and tried to do a heap of like activation
- 1:09:04stuff before doing a steady run on Thursday.
- 1:09:08And where sort of the original site is from where my pain was,
- 1:09:11you know, in that sort of lower abdominal area that's really
- 1:09:15settled down, which is really good.
- 1:09:17So I'm still seeing the physio every Wednesday getting
- 1:09:19treatment. Did quite a decent gym session
- 1:09:23on Monday, which based on the recent interview I need to do
- 1:09:26more of. But yeah, so things have settled
- 1:09:29down there. But unfortunately I'm sort of
- 1:09:31getting pain in my on the right side of my like pubic area at
- 1:09:35the moment. So it's sort of the way I sort
- 1:09:38of describe it is I sort of like, I feel like I've stirred
- 1:09:41up the whole area and there's just like a lot of like spot
- 1:09:43fires going off in my hip area. But the main area of pain now is
- 1:09:48like this lower part of my pubic, my pubic bone bottom part
- 1:09:52of my pelvis. So anyway, it's at the point now
- 1:09:55where even like walking and stuff's a bit uncomfortable.
- 1:09:57So it's heading not in a good direction.
- 1:09:59So basically that means that I've just decided I'll take a
- 1:10:03couple of days off. I'll probably have to get a
- 1:10:05scan, find out what's going on because it's not even with the
- 1:10:08deloading, it's just not playing ball.
- 1:10:10So we'll see. Like annoying because I've not
- 1:10:14missed. So I was thinking about it
- 1:10:15today. I don't think I've missed more
- 1:10:17than one or two days because of injuries since 2018.
- 1:10:20So it's probably like 7 years where I've not missed.
- 1:10:23Yeah, like I've had times where I've like aggravated something
- 1:10:25and cannot been able to do workouts, maybe missed one
- 1:10:28workout, maybe 2 workouts in a row.
- 1:10:29But I've never not been able to run for I've missed periods of
- 1:10:35running for health and stuff like being unwell, but not for
- 1:10:39physical injury. So I'm going to be very grumpy
- 1:10:42not being able to run. But I'll have to find something
- 1:10:44to do and. Has this been going on for like
- 1:10:47the last 2-3 weeks? Not this pain, so like the, the
- 1:10:52abdominal, like the pain in like where.
- 1:10:55So I did that half right. And the day after the half
- 1:10:58marathon, the where the like we did tests.
- 1:11:01So I went and saw the physio say two or three days after, on the
- 1:11:04Wednesday after the, I did the half and it was like a, what was
- 1:11:08diagnosed as like a hernia pain. And I had the, the start of what
- 1:11:13was like, diagnosed as sort of, is it like pubic synthesis or
- 1:11:17like, you know, like a, your pubic area being like your Gucci
- 1:11:20area being a bit uncomfortable, but very mild.
- 1:11:23Like you wouldn't even know unless he did like the physio
- 1:11:26did some tests. And so it's really just the, the
- 1:11:30hernia pain. Like that was quite an acute
- 1:11:32sharp pain. And then over the course of that
- 1:11:35week that, that was the main pain.
- 1:11:37And then it's probably then a week and a half later.
- 1:11:41But like like I did, I think a week, about 8 days after the
- 1:11:45half, I did that track session, like the Dekes quarters, no
- 1:11:50pubic pain, still mainly hernia pain.
- 1:11:53And then it's probably by the end of that week where I'm like,
- 1:11:56oh, this is like this pain sort of moved down.
- 1:12:00So I'm like, oh gosh, that's annoying.
- 1:12:02So then I sort of had two areas of pain.
- 1:12:05And then by now, though, I've sort of so then I stopped doing
- 1:12:08workouts and I've just done this steady running and now it's
- 1:12:10getting to the point even where I'm jogging and it's sort of the
- 1:12:12whole like it's hang. It just seems quite angry.
- 1:12:16It doesn't make sense like running, running in pain when it
- 1:12:19settles down, you know, as you run and you see like the pain
- 1:12:21goes gets lower. That feels, feels all right.
- 1:12:24But this is getting worse as I'm running, which can't be a good
- 1:12:26thing. So like I'm looking at your
- 1:12:28Strava bars here and like deload, you probably deloaded
- 1:12:31the intensity but like your last like 4 weeks have been 127145146
- 1:12:37and like then this week was a down week.
- 1:12:40So like you're still like hitting like big, like
- 1:12:44relatively big mileage. Yeah, it is like, yeah, it is.
- 1:12:49Yeah, that's right. So the the hope is, and this is
- 1:12:52when I was chatting with the physio, it's sort of like gather
- 1:12:54feedback on your pain scores, keep me updated.
- 1:12:57And then as we and so I either message or I've seen him every
- 1:13:01week and we sort of just make an assessment as to what to do
- 1:13:03next. And we sort of got levers to
- 1:13:05pull on 1st lever was pull intensity, next lever is to pull
- 1:13:09volume and so on and so forth. So, but it's really not been
- 1:13:13quite painful, at least not general pain like until probably
- 1:13:17this last four or five days. And so now it's like, what's the
- 1:13:20point in running? Like the idea was, hey, I'm keen
- 1:13:24to still try and get very fit, like the fittest I've ever been
- 1:13:27for Valencia Marathon. And if this settles down, which
- 1:13:31most things for me in the past have, like I've had a lot of
- 1:13:34flare ups, but nothing that's turned into something long term.
- 1:13:37I'll just keep training and if it settles down, it settles
- 1:13:39down. But it's not.
- 1:13:40So I sort of have to back right off, I suppose.
- 1:13:44So, yeah. So look, I but I don't, I could
- 1:13:47probably just cut the running in half and do like 30 minute runs,
- 1:13:51but I don't know if that's going to be helpful at the minute.
- 1:13:54I might as well just get a scan. Have you have you tried like
- 1:13:59elliptical or spike? Does that like aggravate it?
- 1:14:02So my bike, this is all the the fun things that I get to find
- 1:14:06out about now. Like I've not ridden.
- 1:14:08I had a nice bike when I did triathlon 10 years ago, so it
- 1:14:12needs a service. So I'm going to have to get it
- 1:14:14serviced and do all those things.
- 1:14:17But I've literally commuted in and out of work for five years
- 1:14:22straight. I've not, I couldn't tell you
- 1:14:26what an elliptical feels like. Like I've literally not.
- 1:14:29I've I just run to and from work every day.
- 1:14:32So you're going to start getting the train?
- 1:14:34I'm thinking I might just even just just shuffle with a cracked
- 1:14:37leg, but no no. That is a terrible idea.
- 1:14:41Please do not do that. We want to see you raise
- 1:14:44Valencia. Give it the time it needs.
- 1:14:47Give it the time it needs. Yeah, we'll, we'll we'll say.
- 1:14:51But yeah, I'll hopefully I can help on a bike or do something.
- 1:14:54I'll go mad if I have to catch the training.
- 1:14:56I was trying to draw comparison to Croker's injury to him the
- 1:15:00other day, how that's become like kind of drawn out because
- 1:15:03he has kind of continued to like run through it and like not take
- 1:15:08it like so seriously maybe. So I was softly like pointing
- 1:15:12Dean in that direction and making a few implications, but.
- 1:15:16You're so right because I think I remember this Crocrit is going
- 1:15:20on since like October, November last year.
- 1:15:24And like he was like, it's all right.
- 1:15:25I don't need to be fit until like next December.
- 1:15:28And now we're literally in September, October, like we're
- 1:15:31literally 3 months out and like he is because he hasn't like
- 1:15:35taken a period, let's say 4 weeks off to just totally rest
- 1:15:39it because he just keeps on doing like giving it a little
- 1:15:43like three days a week going back.
- 1:15:45Just yeah, just take the jump. Like take the break and just let
- 1:15:50your body heal. Yeah.
- 1:15:52First of all, I just want to find out what it is like.
- 1:15:56So previously it was sort of like it's a hernia.
- 1:15:58It's a recurring recurrence of an existing problem.
- 1:16:01And so if so, with that information, I'm like, well,
- 1:16:04I've dealt with this before, let's let's let it settle down.
- 1:16:08And it did, which is really good.
- 1:16:10So like I'm happy with with that.
- 1:16:13It's just unfortunate that I'm getting pain in another area now
- 1:16:16and I don't know what that is. So I just need to find out what
- 1:16:19it is and then I'll, you know, chat to the physio around a
- 1:16:22course of action. But it is what it is.
- 1:16:26You just sort of, you know, assess your paying schools,
- 1:16:28gather information, make the best decisions with what I've
- 1:16:32got available, that's all I can do.
- 1:16:33Yeah. And also to be fair, like when
- 1:16:35you, like, you say you haven't been injured in seven years,
- 1:16:39This is new. Essentially, when you're in such
- 1:16:43a high training load, then like feel like you're going well, the
- 1:16:46last thing you want to hear is, oh, take some time off because
- 1:16:50you as an athlete, you're like extremely paranoid about losing
- 1:16:53fitness, aren't you? But literally, if you have,
- 1:16:58you've got the time to make it up and be flying again at this
- 1:17:02stage. Yeah, but I've also like you
- 1:17:06often run sore like like I've spent I've had lots of things
- 1:17:10that have when like flare ups. I think the difference is for
- 1:17:15most of them, you either just can moderate, moderate your load
- 1:17:18or avoid certain things like for example, doing 150 meter sprints
- 1:17:22at the end of the track. As you get older, you, you've
- 1:17:25got to be really careful doing those things that they flare up
- 1:17:28my hammies and like I'm generally pretty stiff and sore.
- 1:17:31I work a desk job. So you sort of learn over time
- 1:17:34what you can sort of get away with.
- 1:17:35And I think just generally like if the pain doesn't get worse
- 1:17:38while I'm running, I'm generally all right.
- 1:17:41But this is so this that's that's the key differentiator
- 1:17:44and that's what's that's what's causing me to not run.
- 1:17:48Next week's training week is going to be like 2 seconds long.
- 1:17:52Lucky Ryan's agendas are big as they are.
- 1:17:55At least you'll if you get the scan then you'll know exactly
- 1:17:59what's going on or what's not, what's not going on, and it'll
- 1:18:01put you fully in the picture, won't it?
- 1:18:03Yeah, I think so. Hopefully.
- 1:18:06Then let's finish off this agenda.
- 1:18:08We've got some more single items.
- 1:18:10We'll see how many we get through and how long we spend on
- 1:18:14each one. Some of them may be quick, but I
- 1:18:16thought they were interesting anyway.
- 1:18:17So Cooper, look and House, who's the 16 year old American high
- 1:18:22school kid, not even college kid who qualified for the 800 meter
- 1:18:26team at the trials the other week has since 10 signed the pro
- 1:18:31contract deal with Nike, which means that he won't go to
- 1:18:35college and he won't run NCAA's because he's now pro athletes.
- 1:18:41I guess upside this, he's a pro athlete, He'll live the pro
- 1:18:45lifestyle. They'll be paid probably like I
- 1:18:49know over $500,000 a year, maybe up to $1,000,000 a year U.S.
- 1:18:53dollars. Downside this, he doesn't get to
- 1:18:57go to college like all the other kids because he's only 16 and
- 1:19:00he'll miss out on all of that. You won't get to do is NCAA
- 1:19:04racing, which like so many athletes, it's a bit make or
- 1:19:07break, isn't it? But yes, any thoughts on that or
- 1:19:11next? I don't think I think I'd be
- 1:19:13going to college like as much as a Nike Pro deal would be lovely
- 1:19:19and like live the life of a professional athlete at the age
- 1:19:23of 16. Bigger picture, NCAA, you're
- 1:19:27basically a pro athlete. Let's be real.
- 1:19:30Like you do a few lectures, but like they'll probably do the
- 1:19:34exams for you. So you're still getting an
- 1:19:36education. Whereas now he's 16 uneducated
- 1:19:41and you're running career what, 100?
- 1:19:43Like he'll probably run till he's like 3035 if he's lucky and
- 1:19:48after that like you might coach kids or whatever, but.
- 1:19:54It's a risk, yeah. And can't you, under the new
- 1:19:56rules, still receive some form of assistance and get a
- 1:20:01education? Yeah, that and it could have
- 1:20:04done that nil thing names image likeness, which is almost like a
- 1:20:09way of receiving financial compensation but allowing him to
- 1:20:12go to college so. He's probably getting a fat
- 1:20:14check. Yeah, the more, yeah, the more I
- 1:20:20hear about the US college system and the opportunities that come
- 1:20:23both in terms of getting a free education but also joining a
- 1:20:28very good running program. Like it just seems like such a
- 1:20:32good pathway. And and you sort of bridge from
- 1:20:34being, I mean, I know he's a incredible exception in terms of
- 1:20:38he's now one of the best in the world at 16.
- 1:20:40But you know, I don't know, it'd be a good hedge.
- 1:20:44I would have thought to walk away with an education where you
- 1:20:47can maybe the thought more. Pressure on them as well.
- 1:20:52It does. Maybe the thought is, yeah, but
- 1:20:54perhaps you're thinking I, this is my chance now in the next 4
- 1:20:57years to peak as an 800 meter athlete.
- 1:21:02And you can, there's a long time after that to, to study and do
- 1:21:06everything else. I don't know.
- 1:21:09The thing is as well, to be fair, the deal that's been on
- 1:21:13the table for him now in terms of pro deal with Nike, it may
- 1:21:17potentially never have been more if he had the chosen to go to
- 1:21:21college than what the offer is now.
- 1:21:23So like they're not paying, although he is almost the final
- 1:21:27product right now in terms of what he's just done at the
- 1:21:29trials. They're also paying for his
- 1:21:32potential, like the unknown elements of him, whereas if he
- 1:21:35waits another three or four years, part of that unknown
- 1:21:39becomes known. And let's say maybe he doesn't
- 1:21:42continue on upwards trajectory doesn't necessarily have to
- 1:21:44regress. If you just kind of stagnate so
- 1:21:47it doesn't start running 141 or something, would that pro offer
- 1:21:51them be like substantially less because he's maybe bottomed out
- 1:21:55or he didn't have the potential they thought he was going to
- 1:21:57have? But yeah, he's maybe just taking
- 1:21:59a chance on it. We'll see what he's all about in
- 1:22:01a couple of weeks time in Tokyo. Next item on the agenda.
- 1:22:04I don't know if you heard Andy Buchanan, 2, has a bit of an
- 1:22:08injury, a stress reaction. It's being titled at the minute
- 1:22:13in his femur, I think. So he's taken a solid week off
- 1:22:16right now and seeing after that, but like.
- 1:22:23Did did you get a scan? Is it a full on stress reaction?
- 1:22:26I don't know for sure if he's had it scanned or not, but it's
- 1:22:29come out of his mouth that he's got a stress reaction.
- 1:22:31A week off. Yeah, it's not the typical
- 1:22:33remedy, is it? My man, that's how you, that's
- 1:22:36how you. Handle.
- 1:22:37It you can't can't take the week off every time your body gets a
- 1:22:40bit sore, you just got to plow, plow on.
- 1:22:43No, you need to take 60. You see that like Andy Buchanan,
- 1:22:50so if he's a stress fracture or reaction, whatever, he takes a
- 1:22:53week off and then when is the World Championships are in 2-3
- 1:23:00weeks. The 15th of September is the
- 1:23:03marathon. OK, so two weeks like George
- 1:23:08Mills ran through a stress fracture and it messed him up
- 1:23:13so, so bad. Like it just as a domino effect
- 1:23:17you cause issues in other places.
- 1:23:19It's like, is it really worth running through?
- 1:23:22Like he could just Miss World champs and then run a new Aussie
- 1:23:27record in Valencia? Like I think you have took a
- 1:23:30bigger picture. Cam had a ran on a broken foot
- 1:23:34for a year. Yeah, I.
- 1:23:36Suppose. And they would have been better
- 1:23:38off if the physio had to come back and said it's all in your
- 1:23:41head. That's not that's not, it's not
- 1:23:44a dig at Andy, by the way. There's some context to the Cam
- 1:23:46Levin's interview there. But also I was thinking like
- 1:23:50it's just shows how like. Weird running is right because
- 1:23:53this time last year obviously Brett was down in the dumps
- 1:23:56because he missed the Olympics and Andy just took his record.
- 1:24:00And then I had this thought pre Sydney, but I was thinking maybe
- 1:24:04Brett was going to win Sydney and Andy was potentially pulling
- 1:24:07out of the world champs. Almost roles had reversed.
- 1:24:10I mean, Brett didn't win Sydney and Andy hasn't pulled out yet.
- 1:24:13Be interesting to see how the next two weeks ago, because
- 1:24:16wasn't it before Valencia he got sick and he took a couple of
- 1:24:19days off and then he ran what he ran two O 6 Yeah, So it might
- 1:24:25benefit. We'll see.
- 1:24:26We don't have to wait long to find out the outcome of it.
- 1:24:28At least this one's a quick one. Melbourne Marathon have
- 1:24:33announced Jack Rayner as the poster boy for the marathon this
- 1:24:36year. I think that's maybe his third
- 1:24:39time there. At least she ran 211 prior and
- 1:24:43they've also confirmed Sinead Diver as running the half, which
- 1:24:47is big news because Sinead's the Australian marathon record
- 1:24:50holder and also she hasn't ran or been in the public eye, shall
- 1:24:56we say, since Paris Olympics last year.
- 1:24:58It's. Just a nice payday for Jack
- 1:24:59Rayner, isn't it really? Is it 25 grand?
- 1:25:02I think what was last year maybe.
- 1:25:05What When is Melbourne October? Over 12th.
- 1:25:09So like he'll be, so he's training for the 5K in Tokyo
- 1:25:14now. So then he'll have a month,
- 1:25:18three weeks to train for the marathon.
- 1:25:19Like if he, yeah, I don't know. He is a freaking nature though.
- 1:25:23So he'll probably run like 211 again.
- 1:25:26Probably when you look at the whole men's Australian marathon
- 1:25:31as though if you like kind of list them out on paper, almost
- 1:25:34everyone maybe besides Dean would have done Sydney or world
- 1:25:39champs. So even though he might only
- 1:25:41have a few weeks to kind of build into it, there might not
- 1:25:45really be too much depth in the Melbourne marathon.
- 1:25:48So he might be able to, I should say, get like an easy payday.
- 1:25:51And he's Nike athlete, isn't he? Melbourne marathons and Nike
- 1:25:54sponsored thing. Maybe there's like kind of
- 1:25:56pushed in there. But I don't know if you think he
- 1:25:59wants to make like the next step in terms of marathon and Korea.
- 1:26:03You think he should be being a bit more patient and choose like
- 1:26:06a bigger race chase either a faster time or some more points
- 1:26:09from a more prestigious race. Like you'd love to see him like
- 1:26:13do Tokyo, but then big build for Valencia and see what he can do
- 1:26:18in Valencia. Like that would be exciting
- 1:26:20having like done a 5K block. All right, he's in sub 13 shape
- 1:26:23for the 5K and then like to add a mark and block on top of that.
- 1:26:27Like you'd love to see what he could run.
- 1:26:28That as well. This is the thing.
- 1:26:29You think you have opinions and perspective on these things and
- 1:26:32then you hear the athletes speak about it themselves and there's
- 1:26:35just so many things going on in the background that you're not
- 1:26:37aware aware of. So purely speculation.
- 1:26:40The last item on the agenda in terms of news items was and this
- 1:26:44was this went down really well in the club.
- 1:26:46Also, GB confirmed their team for the World Championships last
- 1:26:50week, maybe Monday or something, Monday, Tuesday.
- 1:26:53So just to quickly rattle them off in the 800 meters for the
- 1:26:56women is Keely Hodgkinson, Georgia Hunter Bell and Gemma
- 1:26:59Ricci men Max Bergen, Ian and Crocker and Ben Patterson 1500
- 1:27:06women Lauren Muir Walcott Nolan Aaron Wallace 1500 men Elliott
- 1:27:10Giles Neil gaily, Josh Kerr and Jake Whiteman got the the bonus
- 1:27:15selection because Josh Kerr is reigning champion. 5000 meters
- 1:27:19women, Melissa Courtney Bryant, insurance Fitzgerald, Hannah
- 1:27:22Nuttall men only George Mills, 10,000 meters for the women,
- 1:27:27Callie Hoga Thackery and Megan Keith.
- 1:27:29And there's no 10,000 meter representative for the males and
- 1:27:34there's only a male Caress is the sole marathon
- 1:27:38representative, no female marathon representative.
- 1:27:40So this caused a bit of a stare, which listener Rachel McGuinness
- 1:27:45rightly highlighted. Like GB have so many marathoners
- 1:27:49both on the men's and women's side who have more ranking
- 1:27:52points than a lot of the athletes who've qualified via
- 1:27:57World Athletics quota list. So the top 100.
- 1:28:00But these athletes, namely Alish Mccolgan in the women's side of
- 1:28:04things when even listed in the road to Tokyo.
- 1:28:08So it was a bit confusing like, well, OK, fair enough.
- 1:28:12If GB didn't choose to select them because they don't have
- 1:28:15they have their own selection policy, which doesn't apply to
- 1:28:18the quota. But why aren't they even in the
- 1:28:21list? So we've done some digging.
- 1:28:24I reached out to a few of the athletes and sent an e-mail to
- 1:28:28UK Athletics kind of trying to shed some light on this.
- 1:28:32And surprise, surprise, it turns out the athletes themselves,
- 1:28:35like I was thinking maybe they'll provide some explanation
- 1:28:39and be like, hey, like, thanks for asking, but no, it's because
- 1:28:42of this. So I didn't want to do it, but I
- 1:28:44think I won't name the athletes, but they were like kind of very
- 1:28:48clear in the fact that they are not happy with the process.
- 1:28:52It's not transparent and like they don't feel supported or
- 1:28:57anything that a governing body should make them feel.
- 1:29:01And when I emailed UK Athletics, they kind of came back with the
- 1:29:06world class performance endurance lead, I think is his
- 1:29:09title. Came back with like a pretty
- 1:29:12lengthy e-mail, but pretty much pointing me in the direction of
- 1:29:15the World Athletic standards, GB standards and policies and
- 1:29:19procedures. And at first I was like, OK,
- 1:29:23he's just like, pretty much shut me down with like, black and
- 1:29:25white facts. But when I kind of reread it and
- 1:29:28tried to contextualize it, he's just trying to bamboozle me with
- 1:29:32information, really. And like almost skim over the
- 1:29:36questions that I've actually asked, which is like, hey, why
- 1:29:38have we got so many athletes who by definition could have gone,
- 1:29:42but you've used your discretionary powers as the
- 1:29:46governing body to say, no, they're not going.
- 1:29:50And that's because their criteria for GB.
- 1:29:52So worldwide, it's if you run the world Athletic standard,
- 1:29:56you're in. If not, you're in the top 100 on
- 1:30:00the rankings list. Then you can go that way.
- 1:30:03However, GB, so they have the World Athletic standard, which
- 1:30:07only one person ran Emil Caress. He's going.
- 1:30:10So then in the top 100 for the men, the men, there was about 8
- 1:30:16or 10 who would have been ranked there as per their ranking
- 1:30:19points. And for the women, it was
- 1:30:21literally like 25 of them had enough points.
- 1:30:24Now GB come in on the top of this and say with the yes,
- 1:30:28you've got to be in the top 100, but you also have to have run
- 1:30:32our B standard which is 2O8 for the men as opposed to two O 630
- 1:30:40as the World Athletics 1 and 224 for the women as opposed to
- 1:30:432/23/30. Now when I looked into like the
- 1:30:48historical lists for what GB athletes have run because I'm
- 1:30:52thinking standards are still pretty like don't use the word
- 1:30:56harsh, but like kind of high level.
- 1:30:58Only four men have ever ran 208 and only six women have ever ran
- 1:31:04224. So we can send 3 athletes to
- 1:31:08this games alone, yet they're setting standards B standards
- 1:31:13which only four and six people in history have ever run.
- 1:31:16So like how do they expect to fill the team based on that?
- 1:31:19Or if they just put that in to kind of remove people's chances
- 1:31:24of going so then OK, they have another kind of entry.
- 1:31:29If you don't kind of do that, you can finish top five at a
- 1:31:32Platinum Label marathon to get your way in.
- 1:31:36Now, when you look at the Platinum Label marathons, this
- 1:31:39is all the world majors plus German in China, Osaka and
- 1:31:43Nagoya in Japan, a Mexican one, Seoul, Amsterdam, Valencia or
- 1:31:48Shanghai. And then coincidentally, if you
- 1:31:51look at the kind of finishing times for each of those
- 1:31:54marathons, surprise, surprise, if you're going to finish in the
- 1:31:58top five there, you would have to run bloody two O 8 or 224
- 1:32:01anyway. So that's basically another
- 1:32:04standard which makes it seem like it's achievable.
- 1:32:08And rarely it's just a lot more words to say no, you're not
- 1:32:12getting in anyway. And then lastly, your last
- 1:32:16chance to learn is to win a Gold Label marathon.
- 1:32:19OK, there's probably a lot more of these in terms of like
- 1:32:24potentially being able to win them, but the window to win one
- 1:32:28of these marathons was only four months long between January and
- 1:32:31May of this year. So I mean, to me it seems like
- 1:32:35they're shutting the door, but UK Athletics may say otherwise.
- 1:32:40It's absolute bullshit to be fair.
- 1:32:42Like how much does it cost to send an athlete to one of these
- 1:32:46championships? Like I don't know, like it
- 1:32:50doesn't make sense. Like the amount of money UK
- 1:32:51Athletics is bringing in to send a couple more athletes, it's not
- 1:32:55going to break the bank. Like they're just being Dick
- 1:32:57heads. But also like what does, so
- 1:33:00there's a lot of paid people in British, British athletics
- 1:33:03taking a check. How much funding do you actually
- 1:33:06think goes towards the athletes supporting the athletes who are
- 1:33:09trying to qualify for these championships?
- 1:33:11Right next to nothing. And then the marathon in
- 1:33:14particular, what are the events that they do?
- 1:33:16Like what affiliation or involvement or support does
- 1:33:20British athletics put into the marathon?
- 1:33:22Like, I get it that an athletics association is needed for track
- 1:33:25and field, but the marathon in particular, they're private
- 1:33:28events run by private companies around the world that are
- 1:33:32inviting these athletes to participate.
- 1:33:34And these athletes are getting there based on contracts they
- 1:33:37have, based on their own personal brand and with their
- 1:33:40shoe company or whatever are the financial aid.
- 1:33:43So their governing body that tells them they can't go to the
- 1:33:46pinnacle of their sport has no real direct involvement in
- 1:33:51supporting them get to their pinnacle, but but gets to say,
- 1:33:54hey, you're not worthy of participating in a championship.
- 1:33:58And that is regulated by World Athletics.
- 1:34:00World Athletics has now created a policy that is so effective in
- 1:34:03terms of ranking people based on time and performance.
- 1:34:07Like, you've actually got this really useful quota system.
- 1:34:11World Athletics has deemed you eligible to qualify, yet your
- 1:34:14local body that has no real positive influence on your
- 1:34:18ability to qualify gets to say no.
- 1:34:20Like, in what other sport does that happen?
- 1:34:23Like, it's it's yeah, I find the whole thing ludicrous.
- 1:34:27Like it should. The fact that they get to to
- 1:34:31impose themselves on on athletes that have earned the right to go
- 1:34:35on a system that seems nothing but fairly quite fair, really.
- 1:34:39Like you shouldn't be, they shouldn't have the, they
- 1:34:42shouldn't be able to play the role that they do.
- 1:34:44And the fact that someone's probably taking a wage and just
- 1:34:47saying no to people. And then British Athletics most
- 1:34:50recently, then choosing to not fund people to championships.
- 1:34:55So like, so then the only lever they have is it cost.
- 1:34:58The only thing that they can say is they're trying to direct
- 1:35:00funding to other people. But based on history, in terms
- 1:35:03of when you talk to athletes around what funding they get
- 1:35:05from those associations, it's little to nothing.
- 1:35:08And yet there's these people in the administration that draw a
- 1:35:11substantial wage from them. And the marathon in particular
- 1:35:15has no real direct link. It's like, I don't know.
- 1:35:19I think it's, yeah, there's a lot of opportunity for
- 1:35:22improvement and change. They should be shut down.
- 1:35:25And actually another situation is in Belgium.
- 1:35:27In the clubhouse there in our YouTube Diaries channel, Adam
- 1:35:31put in a thing saying John Heyman's new video, and I
- 1:35:35actually just watched it before we hopped on and like, he's in a
- 1:35:38similar situation. So he ran the Olympics, he got
- 1:35:43to the final in the 5K and then he's ran thirteen O 3.
- 1:35:47So now the qualifier is 13 O 1. So he's not going to get there
- 1:35:52through like a time standard. So he can try and be in the
- 1:35:55quota which is the top 42, but Belgium require you to be in the
- 1:36:00top 36. Which is like I don't know why
- 1:36:03countries make it harder on athletes that have it hard
- 1:36:06enough as it is. Like he was saying that video
- 1:36:08that like he got to an Olympic final and he can't get into some
- 1:36:12diamond leagues. Like ideally he needs to be in a
- 1:36:14race that is going to run like 1250 for the 5K but he can only
- 1:36:19get in races that are paced at 13100.
- 1:36:24Like it's hard enough on athletes as it is trying to hit
- 1:36:27these time goals without your freaking countries like doing it
- 1:36:32over as well. It's just, it's so, so unfair.
- 1:36:36Like, I get it, you want to increase medal potential or
- 1:36:39whatever they go on about. Essentially they're trying to
- 1:36:42say we don't want people to not be competitive.
- 1:36:44But how are you meant to get to the level of being competitive
- 1:36:47without getting experience? Yeah, I don't get it at all.
- 1:36:50Being brutally honest, Like, fair enough.
- 1:36:52You want to win medals like you have to get like these
- 1:36:54championship situations are so different.
- 1:36:56It's totally alien to a new person.
- 1:36:59So he'd like to Cam Myers, like really Australia probably should
- 1:37:02have sent him there a couple of years ago to Paris.
- 1:37:04So then he'd know what's going to be like in Tokyo.
- 1:37:06Like this is his first senior championship experience now in a
- 1:37:09couple of weeks. And fair enough, he's a freaking
- 1:37:12ager. So he'll probably do unreal.
- 1:37:13But to the normal other high professional athlete, like they,
- 1:37:16it might be totally alien to them and they might like get
- 1:37:18nervous and they might not perform to their highest
- 1:37:22potential. Like it's bigger picture.
- 1:37:24Like you have to look at the bigger picture.
- 1:37:27And in fairness to a, a, like Australian athletics used to be
- 1:37:31quite discretionary with not filling teams.
- 1:37:33But that sort of that behavioral behavior shifted when like good
- 1:37:37people, I think got involved in administration and they select
- 1:37:40big teams, sort of see off the back of that.
- 1:37:43Like Australian athletics is sort of booming quite a bit
- 1:37:46internationally now. We're quite, I think, a lot more
- 1:37:49competitive than what we were 10 years ago.
- 1:37:51And I think like you said, giving younger athletes
- 1:37:54opportunities to get into these championships.
- 1:37:57Like I mean, if you look at say back to the marathon conomance
- 1:38:01and Clayton Young, they scrambled.
- 1:38:03They were the only two American men that hit the the standard
- 1:38:07for Paris. And that was I think 208 or 208
- 1:38:11low. They ran 207 high to make that.
- 1:38:15So then they're not like they're 15 to 20 seconds away from not
- 1:38:19meeting that B standard in and those guys go on to finish well
- 1:38:24inside the top ten at Paris. Like Cam Levens would have not
- 1:38:27made based on that wouldn't have been selected for his world
- 1:38:31champs in 2023 and he finishes 4th there.
- 1:38:33Like it doesn't the policy decisions make no sense.
- 1:38:37And not only do they make no sense, but what right do they
- 1:38:40have when they're not involved in, like, I get it, say if
- 1:38:43you're the the manager of a club and you're sort of working out
- 1:38:46who you play and all that sort of stuff and you're managing the
- 1:38:48payroll. But these these people don't get
- 1:38:51paid by British Athletics. Like, why do they get to tell
- 1:38:55you not to participate? Stupid.
- 1:38:58Yeah, and like, for context, like this is kudos to Australian
- 1:39:03athletics and rather than kicking these athletes, but Liam
- 1:39:07Adams and Tim, Liam Adams, Liam Boudin and Tim Vincent, who are
- 1:39:13two of the men who are going to represent Australia at the
- 1:39:16upcoming World Championships, when you put their points for
- 1:39:20World Athletics into the British men's list, they would rank 7th
- 1:39:24and 8th. Yeah, GB are only sending one
- 1:39:27person. Yeah.
- 1:39:30And I think that was Rachel's point around a lot of the women.
- 1:39:32How did that, how did it roll down differently?
- 1:39:34And the point is that inside the quota, which is capped at 3 per
- 1:39:38country, you roll down to about 1030 points for the women and
- 1:39:431060 points for the men. And so you have, you know, on a
- 1:39:47three person per country basis, you have X many people that that
- 1:39:52meet that criteria based on the points that they've got from the
- 1:39:54races they've participated in. And then you get bonus points
- 1:39:57for racing something like Sydney champs like that would give
- 1:40:00people that placed well in the Aussie champs today extra
- 1:40:02points, which encourages them to race Sydney, which is the whole
- 1:40:06point. Because then you race your local
- 1:40:08champs, you get the extra points to meet the standards set by the
- 1:40:11world body to then get to participate in there.
- 1:40:15In your sport that you're dedicating your life to, Yeah.
- 1:40:20These selection policies by some of these countries are just,
- 1:40:23yeah, bizarre. Let alone the selection criteria
- 1:40:28and process in itself. It actually almost like stinks a
- 1:40:32bit because they've taken them off the road to Tokyo and it
- 1:40:36almost reads as though have they just been trying to like slip
- 1:40:40through the net and go unnoticed in in doing that and it not
- 1:40:43being highlighted. Like I know that that's like
- 1:40:47potentially even worse. And I won't say who said that.
- 1:40:51But again, this adds context because it's an athlete's
- 1:40:54perspective. I'd love to shed some light, but
- 1:40:57honestly, your guess as good as mine.
- 1:40:59British athletic selection policies are like eye care
- 1:41:02instructions, how many boxes to tick, but somehow you still end
- 1:41:06up with three spare screws, a wobbly table and no idea what
- 1:41:09went wrong. They've got enough rules and
- 1:41:12caveats to make it sound official, but the fine print
- 1:41:15basically says we do whatever we want.
- 1:41:17If they like you, you're in, If not, you're out.
- 1:41:21The funding is just as mysterious.
- 1:41:23After making an Olympic team, I was told I, in averted commas,
- 1:41:27wasn't at the standard to potentially make an Olympic
- 1:41:30team. Meanwhile, someone who didn't
- 1:41:32make the Olympic team are on top funding because apparently in
- 1:41:37the British athletics eyes, they're on track to podium.
- 1:41:40Yeah. Stupid.
- 1:41:41It's actually so sad to hear is going on.
- 1:41:44It's. Not fair.
- 1:41:45I'm like from the outside looking in British athletics to
- 1:41:47many people is probably like this prestigious organization
- 1:41:50and like they try and brand themselves as being like very
- 1:41:53proud and supportive and blah blah blah.
- 1:41:56I wouldn't even like to look at what the values are and stuff
- 1:41:58and all the sponsorships and endorsements to have going, but
- 1:42:03it need some change. And I'm not trying to say, hey,
- 1:42:07here's your free CEOs and board members right here on our
- 1:42:11podcast, but it's just clear that there's room for
- 1:42:14improvement. It's a nice way to put on it.
- 1:42:16I reckon double troubles been covered there this episode in a
- 1:42:20couple of ways. And thanks for everyone for
- 1:42:23writing in for your double troubles in the clubhouse.
- 1:42:25Like really enjoying reading them.
- 1:42:26And yeah, we'll, we'll get them, get them going.
- 1:42:29Is that us, boys? I think so.
- 1:42:30I'm running out of light here. How is?
- 1:42:34It saving electricity the cut down.
- 1:42:36Big follow on of sport this evening.
- 1:42:38We'll we'll get to watch the F1 thankfully because we've timed
- 1:42:41this well. Yeah, When does that kick off,
- 1:42:42do you know? MPM for US.
- 1:42:45MPM, Perth Time. Yeah, and then it rolls straight
- 1:42:50into Liverpool, the Arsenal. Good, I hope you get spanked so
- 1:42:53bad by Arsenal. You're a United fan at your own
- 1:42:58You saw a Carabelle Cup. We had a great win yesterday.
- 1:43:01I don't know what you're on about.
- 1:43:02The Caribou club. We had a great win in the league
- 1:43:04yesterday, so yeah. We're improving.
- 1:43:08The less said about United, the better.
- 1:43:11What was 87th minute? Was a penalty or was the actual
- 1:43:13goal it? Was a Knight 7 minute penalty
- 1:43:16for the Caribou for the Caribou Cup.
- 1:43:19We'll put some context. It's like United, we're playing
- 1:43:22a team called Grimsby which is in the 4th Division, which I'm
- 1:43:27going to say it's like West Coast Eagles play in the local
- 1:43:33Scarborough AFL team and West Coast Eagles losing, which is
- 1:43:37pretty common but. Funnily enough, actually you can
- 1:43:41get your head around at the minute, but ordinarily that
- 1:43:43would make no sense. And see, United aren't in the
- 1:43:49best shape, but. Did you see Amrim's interview
- 1:43:53afterwards? They said to him you walked off
- 1:43:56like before the penalties happened, like you went down the
- 1:43:58tunnel. What's going on?
- 1:44:00And he was like, man, if we beat these guys on penalties, it
- 1:44:04would have been like the biggest injustice ever.
- 1:44:06Like, I just didn't care what happened at that point.
- 1:44:09I'd seen enough. Yeah, I was shouting for the
- 1:44:11other team as well. It's sort of like a nice fairy
- 1:44:13tale story where the small team wins.
- 1:44:17Who's good to see all? Right then, fellas, I think that
- 1:44:20might be us. I haven't actually had a look at
- 1:44:22what's. Coming between now and next
- 1:44:23week, but you'll have to stick around to find out because we'll
- 1:44:27figure it out between now and then.
- 1:44:29And please, once you listen to the Cam Levin's interview, let
- 1:44:33us know your takeaways. Let us know he learns.
- 1:44:36Because I was making notes as I was listening to it.
- 1:44:39I've got about 30 different points there.
- 1:44:42And yeah, so good. And actually comment as well who
- 1:44:47you'd want to hear interviewed next because Ryan kind of slide
- 1:44:53into anyones DMS so anything is possible.
- 1:44:56Actually, I forgot there's there's one point that we should
- 1:45:00have made during this recording and it's when we talk about the
- 1:45:04Diamond League results. There was a guy Will Mcalendon,
- 1:45:08he's part of Perth distance project or Perth distance, at
- 1:45:12least something like that. And he was actually on the
- 1:45:14ground in Zurich, a scene on his story.
- 1:45:17So I messaged him and said like, hey, if you're going back
- 1:45:21tomorrow, like be interested in like your experience, kind of
- 1:45:24get some on the ground perspective for people to hear.
- 1:45:26And he said that it was a Rob. It was a Rob.
- 1:45:30Yeah, it was expensive, yeah. Well, in Australian terms,
- 1:45:35relatively speaking, it's not that bad.
- 1:45:38But in the UK there's yes, 6 Swiss francs, which translates
- 1:45:43to 12 Aussie dollars for 6 1/2 Irish EUR.
- 1:45:48He said the atmosphere was like insane.
- 1:45:49They handed out large pieces of card which doubled as like fans
- 1:45:54to make like the clappers. And yeah, he just said it was
- 1:45:57like insane. On the the night before the
- 1:45:59track action, they had the field events in like a bit of a street
- 1:46:03compact setting. So this is where I seen his
- 1:46:06story. He was literally as the pole
- 1:46:09vaulters run down the runway and then they have the mat at the
- 1:46:12end. He was behind the mat.
- 1:46:14So like full bird's eye view on the guys sprinting at them.
- 1:46:18And he had like a sick video of Mondo going over it.
- 1:46:22I was like, wow, like what an experience that is.
- 1:46:25So yeah, thanks for letting us know your experience there and
- 1:46:28your thoughts. Gotta say, getting over to a
- 1:46:30Diamond League would be pretty bucket list, wouldn't it?
- 1:46:33Owen, you can be our correspondent next next year.
- 1:46:36I'm going to try to get London next year because London is
- 1:46:38meant to be incredible. But yeah.
- 1:46:40And for nozzles? Now we'll see you next week.
- 1:46:42Right, Go on. Good luck.
