- 0:00Speaker 1: Big golf guy. Yeah, I love, I love. I got
- 0:02Speaker 1: to play out there last earlier this year. Actually really,
- 0:04Speaker 1: uh I hear it's awesome. Yeah, it's nuts.
- 0:08Speaker 2: I heard that Troubadour is like a place that's like
- 0:10Speaker 2: country clubs for people that don't like country clubs.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, uh, well all those Discovery properties in
- 0:17Speaker 1: that way, right, like there's one here and they yes,
- 0:20Speaker 1: I mean they're all over the world, but yeah, it's yeah,
- 0:22Speaker 1: like you said, country club for people who hate country clubs.
- 0:24Speaker 1: The whole new way to do it is it like
- 0:26Speaker 1: that you get to not like dressed down, but you
- 0:28Speaker 1: don't have to be you can dress whatever you want,
- 0:31Speaker 1: just how you want.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Like Ernest goes out there and he'll be he's a
- 0:34Speaker 2: Richland that's country club. Yeah, collared shirt, tucked in. Yeah,
- 0:38Speaker 2: you know he's a big boss though.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Like yeah, he's a he's a big swinging Dike tappy. Yeah.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I got to make sure people know that
- 0:44Speaker 2: I have money and look at my twenty five thousand
- 0:46Speaker 2: dollar entry feet at this place.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Are you part of a country club? I am? What
- 0:50Speaker 1: a great way to start, I know, I know, just
- 0:54Speaker 1: an assholetchup club?
- 0:56Speaker 2: Yeah what uh what what what got you in the
- 0:58Speaker 2: country club? If I know we're here from as Car
- 1:00Speaker 2: And also, by the way, I saw your clips on
- 1:02Speaker 2: magnum p I congratulations, thank you it's bad ass.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I appreciate that. That was fun. What got me into
- 1:07Speaker 1: country clothes? Well, I really am not into the country
- 1:09Speaker 1: clips scene. I'm more into just I like golfing, So
- 1:12Speaker 1: I like you just needed to be like, I just
- 1:15Speaker 1: can't play public courses anymore. I mean everyone golfs now.
- 1:17Speaker 1: It's just it's like you're gonna you're gonna take five
- 1:19Speaker 1: hours to play golf. I just can't do that. So
- 1:21Speaker 1: how often you golf throughout the year? I don't know.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Race season gets tricky. I try to go at least
- 1:26Speaker 1: once a week maybe if I usually I usually get
- 1:28Speaker 1: like one day to myself during the week and I'll
- 1:30Speaker 1: try to get around in. Yeah, but I don't like
- 1:32Speaker 1: the country. I don't like ever go in. I just
- 1:34Speaker 1: go yeah, yeah, you go up, yeah, get the cart
- 1:37Speaker 1: rip around a little bit.
- 1:38Speaker 2: What is like golf is a lot of drinking. Do
- 1:41Speaker 2: you get some drinking in while you're in race season?
- 1:44Speaker 1: While I'm racing in race season and the one day
- 1:46Speaker 1: you have all Oh yeah, you get some drinking in
- 1:49Speaker 1: game day all right. Oh, Like if I had to
- 1:51Speaker 1: go eight months during the season without drinking, I don't
- 1:54Speaker 1: know what I do.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Boys get after this team get after it like there
- 1:56Speaker 3: you guys is the camaraderie.
- 1:58Speaker 1: My boys are. My twelve guys are absolutely just to
- 2:02Speaker 1: burn it down. They just got out of here today
- 2:04Speaker 1: and I think they're still out on this their own
- 2:05Speaker 1: broadway right now, just let it rip, getting after be
- 2:08Speaker 1: on the parade float and they're gonna I don't even
- 2:10Speaker 1: know what state they're gonna be in. Yeah.
- 2:12Speaker 2: The pit crew guys, like the offensive line, they just
- 2:14Speaker 2: kind of see them like they get after it.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just a rowdy cat. My gas man he
- 2:18Speaker 1: played for the Panthers for a little bit. He was
- 2:20Speaker 1: a tight end. Yeah. So we have a few x
- 2:25Speaker 1: NFL guys, We have some baseball guys, all the you know,
- 2:29Speaker 1: pit crew, over the wall guys. They're all ex athletes
- 2:31Speaker 1: pretty much. Yeah. Yeah, I wonder if Paul's here, do
- 2:35Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, I don't know if he's here or not.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I wonder if he's here.
- 2:38Speaker 3: He's somebody with this, like the first kind of person
- 2:41Speaker 3: we've kind of met in the NASCAR community that's really
- 2:43Speaker 3: embraces nothing but big Dick Energy. Like just he's got
- 2:47Speaker 3: the chest tear out. Yeah, he's just seeing his vibes.
- 2:50Speaker 3: He wants to hit push ups.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Incredibly beautiful green eyes.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's just like God, Ye've always got
- 2:58Speaker 2: a little bit of grease on him, but it's kind
- 2:59Speaker 2: of like the he get places for a little bit more.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he's just a wild man.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Is he.
- 3:03Speaker 2: When we met him, it was like, Okay, this is
- 3:04Speaker 2: the guy he went to NASCAR two years ago?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Right? Uh, yeah, are you talking about we did?
- 3:08Speaker 2: No, just this is just to you because one year
- 3:10Speaker 2: I didn't make him, So two years ago he goes.
- 3:11Speaker 1: He's like Paul Swanson, Pulse Swanson, you got to know
- 3:13Speaker 1: this guy. Pulse wants and bake. Dick Energy just keeps
- 3:15Speaker 1: talking him up.
- 3:16Speaker 2: And usually when you talk to your buddies and you're like, hey,
- 3:18Speaker 2: this is you've put it up here when you really
- 3:21Speaker 2: experienced it, it's not as high as a think.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I met him, and it almost exceeded exceeds it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The expectation is that does he have like a legacy
- 3:28Speaker 2: in the NASCAR world of being the guy the bag
- 3:30Speaker 2: Dick Energy guy him that way I know him.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I don't know. I know Paul fairly decent, but yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 1: he's like that label guy b D guy. Yeah, there
- 3:42Speaker 1: we go. You'll walk down pit road before the race
- 3:45Speaker 1: and like they're setting up pistols and he'll have his
- 3:47Speaker 1: fire suit. Fun zip bro. That's awesome. I'm like, I
- 3:52Speaker 1: love it. We were curious.
- 3:54Speaker 3: We're like, man, we wonder if Paul Swan, if his
- 3:56Speaker 3: legacy goes outside of just we'll see of his brain,
- 3:58Speaker 3: if if he's known around the Askar community.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Yeah, literally thought to myselves, maybe we can get to
- 4:02Speaker 2: that part of the conversation. But why not start in
- 4:04Speaker 2: the first sixty seconds with on the podcasts about Paul.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah, immediately, Hey, this is this is a shout out
- 4:09Speaker 1: for him. It's building his He's gonna love it. He's
- 4:12Speaker 1: gonna be awesome guy too. Yeah, yeah, about he's about
- 4:14Speaker 1: busting with Ah.
- 4:16Speaker 2: When you're in the situation you were going into the
- 4:17Speaker 2: cup and like the four way tie type thing all that,
- 4:20Speaker 2: Like how do rivalries playing into that?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Like who is your big rival? Well, you're like throughout
- 4:25Speaker 1: your career four or through my career, your career. Let's
- 4:28Speaker 1: so we'll start there and we'll incrementally go down. I
- 4:30Speaker 1: don't really know. I feel like like I don't I've
- 4:33Speaker 1: been lucky. I haven't had anyone like I really despise,
- 4:35Speaker 1: Like he'll have kind of run ins with some guys
- 4:37Speaker 1: every now and then some guys kind of they will
- 4:40Speaker 1: hate each other for years and years. I haven't really
- 4:42Speaker 1: been that way. I'd say more my rivalry is like
- 4:44Speaker 1: my buddies who I grew up racing with, Like, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: we're all good friends, you know, Chase Elliott and I,
- 4:48Speaker 1: Bubba Wolston and I. We grew up together. You know,
- 4:51Speaker 1: we started racing together when we're like nine, ten years old,
- 4:53Speaker 1: So like they're kind of like your rivingly situation the same.
- 4:57Speaker 1: You obviously come from a pedigree of racers, Chase is it?
- 4:59Speaker 1: You know Bill Elliott drove Chase his dad, Bubba doesn't
- 5:02Speaker 1: come from a racing family, Like, his parents never raced.
- 5:05Speaker 1: He just started when he was young, and he and
- 5:07Speaker 1: I actually first started, yeah, when we were like ten
- 5:09Speaker 1: years old together. I remember us growing up together. But
- 5:12Speaker 1: I feel like like that's my rivalry is my buddies.
- 5:14Speaker 3: You're just kind of like, yeah, you're just trying to
- 5:16Speaker 3: like maybe not be very loud about it, but let
- 5:19Speaker 3: you win.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And you're like, yeah, yeah, a little bit, but it's
- 5:22Speaker 1: not too bad. We all support each other, but you
- 5:24Speaker 1: want to beat those guys more than anyone else.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I think your buddies, yeah, do you have? Are there
- 5:28Speaker 3: guys that are just known like all this dude's an asshole?
- 5:31Speaker 1: I think I think we're all we can all be
- 5:33Speaker 1: that way. Yeah, and someone's what's been your asshole moment?
- 5:38Speaker 1: Swinging with helmets on which they need.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I think it is a little off, like as a fan,
- 5:42Speaker 3: like you know, listen, I'm a I'm a dumb NASCAR fan,
- 5:45Speaker 3: but when you see a couple bumps in the road,
- 5:46Speaker 3: you're like, oh yeah, you kind of want some demolish.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Want the Missouri? Oh yeah, the Missouri?
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, And uh, you guys obviously like there's like
- 5:55Speaker 3: some some lines that get crossed.
- 5:57Speaker 1: There are there are some lines that get crossed, but uh,
- 6:01Speaker 1: it just kind of depends on how like far you
- 6:03Speaker 1: cross that line. What's here we go? We do?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Uh, pet we do pet peeves. We do like shout
- 6:07Speaker 3: out no free shout out pet peeve of the week. Yeah,
- 6:09Speaker 3: what's a pet peeve in the NASCAR? Realm to where
- 6:12Speaker 3: you're just like, it's just it's kind of an unspoken
- 6:15Speaker 3: law that goes down wing crossed. You know, it's kind
- 6:18Speaker 3: of legal. But also it's like we all know that
- 6:21Speaker 3: that's bullshit.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Oh man, that's a good question. Shit, solid question. That
- 6:25Speaker 1: is a good question. Like unwritten rule kind of stuff. Yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 1: Like in hockey, there's like things you should and shouldn't do,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but it's not the rule.
- 6:32Speaker 3: You might go up and say something to somebody or
- 6:33Speaker 3: getting their face knowing like he's gonna, you know, the
- 6:37Speaker 3: like this it's not gonna make any any sense to
- 6:39Speaker 3: everybody else, but he knows what I'm speaking.
- 6:41Speaker 1: To think, I think the more of it. It's like
- 6:44Speaker 1: the athletes that are involved, right, Like in the NFL,
- 6:45Speaker 1: you guys had stuff right like all right, you don't
- 6:47Speaker 1: do this, you can do this, this is not cool.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And on the track, I feel like between drivers, yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 1: it's like like cheap shots, right, like running into somebody
- 6:55Speaker 1: doing them on purpose, like for no reason. I'm sure
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's the same way as like getting a you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: a leg block or something from the behind something like
- 7:04Speaker 1: and like you know, going low, going low right and
- 7:07Speaker 1: hurting somebody taking a chance to hurt somebody. I think
- 7:09Speaker 1: it's kind of the same way in our world, like athletes,
- 7:12Speaker 1: the drivers, you know what's fucked up and what's not right.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And I think it's the same with every sport. But yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I think on the track, like if someone runs any
- 7:20Speaker 1: to you for no reason, you're like, well, what the fuck? Yeah?
- 7:22Speaker 3: Have you?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Have you done it before? Oh? Yeah, I mean you'll
- 7:24Speaker 1: do it. I mean that's everyone. Everyone does it. I mean,
- 7:27Speaker 1: but it's do it. Yeah, yeah, I mean everyone does it.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Everyone has those things. They're like, it is kind of
- 7:32Speaker 1: messed up. I do it, but I do it anyway.
- 7:33Speaker 2: What is there a specific situation in your career, Like
- 7:36Speaker 2: I'm intentionally gonna do something here because it's been pissing
- 7:38Speaker 2: me off, and.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Afterwards you're like, I shouldn't die, but emotions were high
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I would.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I would say I've said things I wish I didn't say.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I don't think I've not that I can think of
- 7:48Speaker 1: right now, like done an action that I'm like I
- 7:50Speaker 1: should have done that. I feel like it's more things
- 7:52Speaker 1: you say, like maybe you shouldn't have said that. What's
- 7:54Speaker 1: something you said, Oh, just like fuck that guy, or
- 7:57Speaker 1: like that guy's a dick or something you know, like
- 7:58Speaker 1: but uh, it's is like actions like I don't think
- 8:01Speaker 1: I've ever done anything I regret that. Yeah, but words,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I feel like you can regret pretty easy because when.
- 8:06Speaker 2: In NASCAR you can go I want to to the
- 8:08Speaker 2: PR as a kid with my grandparents.
- 8:10Speaker 1: They're big into Nascar, and you.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Can get like the walkie talkies or like the little
- 8:13Speaker 2: monitors with the headphones. Yeah, where you can listen to
- 8:15Speaker 2: the pit crews. Are there like two different like wavelengths
- 8:18Speaker 2: or whatever they are with different channels. No, you would
- 8:20Speaker 2: have been if you I've been able to listen to you,
- 8:22Speaker 2: ye could go fuck that guy drivers.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you've been here. Yeah. So if you've rant
- 8:27Speaker 1: a radio as a fan, yeah, you'll be able to
- 8:29Speaker 1: hear anyone you want to hear, hear all the good stuff,
- 8:32Speaker 1: the unfiltered that's what you want, would be, that's what
- 8:35Speaker 1: you want. Yeah, it's like hot mikes, right like when
- 8:38Speaker 1: NBA and NFL do the hot mic stuff, Like I listen,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I like listen to that, And I feel like it's
- 8:41Speaker 1: the same way with radios with us.
- 8:43Speaker 2: When you were you said like you started racing a
- 8:45Speaker 2: nineteen years old obviously you can't get a driver's license
- 8:47Speaker 2: to you're sixteen, but you come from a pedigree like
- 8:49Speaker 2: when you were born growing up, were you just like
- 8:53Speaker 2: I'm going to be a racer.
- 8:53Speaker 1: That's what I'm gonna do. Was that like the number
- 8:55Speaker 1: one goal your whole life? I mean I grew up
- 8:57Speaker 1: around it, you know, dad racing uh before I was born.
- 9:01Speaker 1: So I just grew up around that stuff and I
- 9:04Speaker 1: wanted to do it. But like my dad never pushed
- 9:06Speaker 1: me to do anything. Dad was always do you want
- 9:08Speaker 1: to do it? And I remember like every step we took,
- 9:10Speaker 1: like into different cards or series, like do you sure
- 9:12Speaker 1: you want to do this? Because it's a big commitment,
- 9:14Speaker 1: right if you're going to half ass dough something while
- 9:16Speaker 1: you're doing it. So Dad was always good at that.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So yeah, I was lucky. This is always what I
- 9:20Speaker 1: wanted to do because I just wanted to do what
- 9:22Speaker 1: my dad did. And I was really lucky to be
- 9:24Speaker 1: able to do it. But I never never really want
- 9:26Speaker 1: I played other sports, but I was I faced facts like, hey,
- 9:30Speaker 1: I was like five six till I got to high
- 9:32Speaker 1: school or until I graduated high school, I'm like, and
- 9:34Speaker 1: I played basketball in that time. Baseball was like, all right,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I have to list my career opportunities. I'm going to
- 9:39Speaker 1: be like five to nine. I can't jump very high.
- 9:43Speaker 1: You know, racing's probably gonna be my career color for
- 9:47Speaker 1: other sports, right hockey, football, basketball. I'm not physically adequate
- 9:54Speaker 1: enough to do that. So I'm like, I want to
- 9:55Speaker 1: go do the racing side. And I'm pretty good at
- 9:57Speaker 1: the racing stuff and I wasn't very good at the
- 9:59Speaker 1: other stuff.
- 10:00Speaker 3: So yeah, how sick is it that you did want
- 10:03Speaker 3: to do this your whole life and now you're you
- 10:06Speaker 3: were the twenty twenty three NASCAR Cup Series champion.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Well, it's you know, it's neat a like growing up
- 10:10Speaker 1: around it, and I admired those guys who you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: were champions because I was at the track with my
- 10:14Speaker 1: dad and I got to be around those guys, you know,
- 10:17Speaker 1: the Jimmy Johnson's and Jeff Gordon's and all those guys
- 10:19Speaker 1: and just wanted to be that that person. So it's, yes,
- 10:22Speaker 1: it's kind of hard to believe, you know, if you
- 10:24Speaker 1: have a dream as a kid and you finally accomplish
- 10:26Speaker 1: it and you're like, damn, it's kind of will come
- 10:28Speaker 1: full circle. And then you think back on all the
- 10:30Speaker 1: people that helped you out along the way, and it's uh, yeah,
- 10:32Speaker 1: it's definitely a neat feeling. Yeah, it's yeah, I love
- 10:36Speaker 1: that stuff when you're when you're a kid, obviously you
- 10:37Speaker 1: look up to your dad, But was there a driver
- 10:39Speaker 1: that you're like almost would make your dad feel like, man,
- 10:42Speaker 1: he thinks that guy's cool with me? Yeah, I mean
- 10:44Speaker 1: I loved you know, Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart,
- 10:47Speaker 1: Matt Kenzith. You know, those guys were kind of like
- 10:49Speaker 1: the guys I loved besides my dad. You know, I
- 10:51Speaker 1: loved watching those guys. Right, you realize what kind of
- 10:53Speaker 1: bus you're sitting on, right, it's the what buses? It?
- 10:58Speaker 1: Number eight? Dale Ear and Hard, is it? Yeah, it's
- 11:01Speaker 1: the Junior bus. Yeah, I see her. You got a
- 11:03Speaker 1: Gordon sticker, You got Kansas sticker. This bus actually used
- 11:06Speaker 1: to go to tailgates. Really, we found it in the
- 11:08Speaker 1: back of a Wedgwood, Houston parking lot. It'king down and everything.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But he used to travel to all the NASCAR events.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That's badass. A lot of history in here. Yeah. So
- 11:15Speaker 1: not a Dale or a Hard Junior fan. No, I
- 11:17Speaker 1: love Dale yeah, yeah, yeah. I was usually with Dale.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Say something nice Aboutdale. I lived. I lived on Dale's
- 11:23Speaker 1: property for like three years. Is it the farm? Is
- 11:25Speaker 1: it like the old like yeah, weird stories right across
- 11:29Speaker 1: the woods from there. So he was gonna invite us
- 11:31Speaker 1: to invite us to that, like what last year? The town?
- 11:33Speaker 1: Every year he invites us. But you know you got
- 11:35Speaker 1: the town, the Whiskey River Town. Yeah yeah that was
- 11:37Speaker 1: lived there for three years. I lived there. Yeah, so
- 11:41Speaker 1: funnest time is my life. I was like a rookie
- 11:43Speaker 1: in the Cup series. I'm twenty one years old, living
- 11:46Speaker 1: by myself and my house I'm renting for the first time,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and like Dale's a thousand yards through the woods, and
- 11:53Speaker 1: Dale was still racing a the time. So we would
- 11:55Speaker 1: get done with these races on Sunday night, get home
- 11:57Speaker 1: at ten ten thirty, and I would go drive a
- 12:00Speaker 1: four wheeler through the woods to the Dale's house and
- 12:01Speaker 1: get absolutely wrecked, like six hours and then one eye
- 12:06Speaker 1: a four wheeler through the woods back to my place.
- 12:08Speaker 1: That was like the funnest years of my life. So
- 12:10Speaker 1: Dale is Yeah, Dale's so much fun and yes, it's cool.
- 12:13Speaker 1: This is the eight bus. It's big.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you rattling off names. I was like, oh he
- 12:16Speaker 3: had Dale yet I wonder no, I okay, sorry, Dale.
- 12:19Speaker 3: I was a big fan of that is awesome.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Taking a four wheeler, just whipping through like I'm gonna
- 12:25Speaker 2: go over to your buddys house, but I'm gonna get
- 12:27Speaker 2: out of here going through the woods.
- 12:29Speaker 1: No worries. I mean in the woods, I'm driving through
- 12:31Speaker 1: the trails. It's all good. Did you get lost? I
- 12:34Speaker 1: think the first time I did it, I got lost.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Everything looks the same the woods, and it's dark and
- 12:38Speaker 1: I'm seeing eight of everything. So it was the number two.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It was. It was rough.
- 12:43Speaker 3: He's the whiskey town, and it seems like it exeeds
- 12:46Speaker 3: the hype it already gets.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's slowed down a little bit. You know.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I got a couple of kids now, so it's it's
- 12:52Speaker 1: slown down. But uh, there was some wild stuff that
- 12:54Speaker 1: happened in uh, in the town that was h that
- 12:57Speaker 1: I can't say. You're I can't say, oh, that is awesome.
- 13:02Speaker 2: You brought up a guy his name and I'm not
- 13:04Speaker 2: super well versus NASCAR, but Tony Stewart, Yeah, he was
- 13:06Speaker 2: considered a shit stirr kind of guy, right.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Was that who Dale would get after with when he
- 13:11Speaker 3: almost swung somebody going to.
- 13:12Speaker 2: The literally going to pr with my grandparents and being
- 13:15Speaker 2: like Tony Stewart, that guy's a piece of shit, remember, Like, yeah, Grandpa, absolutely,
- 13:19Speaker 2: I have literally and I just that always stuck with me.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Mascar, Yeah, yeah, Tony was. I mean he had
- 13:26Speaker 1: he was a fiery personality. He was always great to
- 13:28Speaker 1: me and my family. Every Like I was a little
- 13:30Speaker 1: tiny kid and I remember him being great to me,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and he was awesome to race with. But yeah, he
- 13:36Speaker 1: had that fire in him, and I think like in
- 13:37Speaker 1: the early two thousands it was like the height of
- 13:40Speaker 1: like him getting into a bunch of disagreements. But Tony's
- 13:44Speaker 1: a good guy. He's a hell of person. When you
- 13:46Speaker 1: were grown up, did you always want to drive for Ford?
- 13:49Speaker 1: I didn't really care who I drove for honestly, growing up, Like,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you know, you're just trying to make it, You're just
- 13:53Speaker 1: trying to have a job, and uh, you know, we
- 13:57Speaker 1: got I've been with Ford for the last ten years now,
- 14:00Speaker 1: twenty thirteen we started working with them, and they've been fantastic.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So I really haven't worked with anybody at the professional
- 14:05Speaker 1: level like a Toyota or Chevy. You know, I know,
- 14:09Speaker 1: unfortunately I see the sine back here. But no, Ford's
- 14:12Speaker 1: been you know, They've been great family to me. And
- 14:15Speaker 1: but yeah, as a kid, I didn't really care, but
- 14:16Speaker 1: now obviously you do. But I just wanted to have
- 14:21Speaker 1: a job. As a kid, I don't care who I
- 14:23Speaker 1: drove for. How do how do you make it?
- 14:24Speaker 3: I apologize for being an idiot on this on all
- 14:27Speaker 3: the racing NASCAR, but I also enjoy because I feel
- 14:29Speaker 3: like a newborn learning a lot of new stuff. How
- 14:31Speaker 3: do you make it professionally in thatscar? Like what's the
- 14:34Speaker 3: Obviously with football you get drafted.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You go play high school and new go to college
- 14:37Speaker 2: and hopefully get drafted. Yeah, pretty linear. Yeah, I feel
- 14:40Speaker 2: like the steps are a little bit different. There's a
- 14:42Speaker 2: lot of similarities. Was like, we have Little League right,
- 14:47Speaker 2: Like there's local tiny trail like I started when I
- 14:50Speaker 2: was nine, so like go karts all those stuff. You know,
- 14:53Speaker 2: that's just like a Little League kid getting going right
- 14:55Speaker 2: in te ball or something. And so there's different steps
- 14:58Speaker 2: you take as you get older. I'd say, like our
- 15:01Speaker 2: you know, triple A double A is like trucks for
- 15:04Speaker 2: Infinity Series and then you hope you get noticed and
- 15:06Speaker 2: you make it up to the big leagues, you know,
- 15:08Speaker 2: of the Cup Series, And so I think it's some
- 15:11Speaker 2: of it's similar. You're not going to school for this stuff,
- 15:13Speaker 2: like there's no scholarships for it. But yeah, it's just
- 15:16Speaker 2: having good people around you. Good sponsors obviously are huge
- 15:19Speaker 2: on it.
- 15:19Speaker 1: And but yeah, there's feeder series that you have to
- 15:21Speaker 1: do well in to get noticed by an owner and
- 15:24Speaker 1: give you a job.
- 15:25Speaker 3: So and I wonder what it's like too, Like if
- 15:27Speaker 3: somebody's got like an instinct or an eye for driving,
- 15:31Speaker 3: but they're just not in a faster vehicle like in
- 15:34Speaker 3: the Infinity or of like you're trying to get noticed, but
- 15:36Speaker 3: you're not winning even those events. But how somebody that
- 15:39Speaker 3: has it might not get identified just because they might
- 15:42Speaker 3: not have the as good Yeah, the right environment or it.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Happens all the time. Yeah, I mean there's people I
- 15:48Speaker 1: think are great race car drivers, but they haven't gotten
- 15:51Speaker 1: the shot that they I think they deserve. And that's
- 15:53Speaker 1: at any level, whether it's the NASCAR level you're in
- 15:56Speaker 1: a lower tier car, or the local short track level.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I know, guys, I grew up racing with that or
- 16:01Speaker 1: or twice my age that were unbelievable race car drivers,
- 16:04Speaker 1: but they just never got a shot. Yeah, that stuff
- 16:07Speaker 1: happens all the time.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Obviously you're very proven at this point. But when you
- 16:11Speaker 2: were coming up, did you feel like he got maybe
- 16:13Speaker 2: like a little more of a help at hand from
- 16:15Speaker 2: your dad?
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you know when I was when I started, you know,
- 16:19Speaker 1: dad was still racing when I started racing, and really
- 16:21Speaker 1: really through my mid late teenage years, Dad was still racing,
- 16:25Speaker 1: so he wasn't at every track with me every weekend.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He had his own jobs. So but I did feel like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you know, growing up, it's like, oh, that's Blaney's kid.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You know, that's Dave's son. See how he is? Right?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Is he worth the shit or something like that, And
- 16:39Speaker 1: so yeah, I think there was a little bit of
- 16:41Speaker 1: that pressure. It's like, all right, I got to live
- 16:42Speaker 1: up to what my dad can do and you know,
- 16:45Speaker 1: try to make it like he did. So there was
- 16:46Speaker 1: a little bit that as a kid, But I think
- 16:48Speaker 1: you grow out of it, like as you get older,
- 16:49Speaker 1: you realize you're your own person and you kind of
- 16:52Speaker 1: do things your own way and start living by your
- 16:55Speaker 1: life instead of your like your parents, right, or someone
- 16:57Speaker 1: who came before you. Was that a difficult process?
- 17:00Speaker 2: It gets to that point though, fighting them pressure and
- 17:01Speaker 2: then being like, Okay, I gotta be my own self
- 17:03Speaker 2: here in this same avenue that my father made a
- 17:05Speaker 2: little bit.
- 17:06Speaker 1: I feel like there was always you felt like here
- 17:07Speaker 1: was always so many eyes on you, like I gotta
- 17:09Speaker 1: do good, I gotta prove myself and I don't want
- 17:12Speaker 1: to look like a clown. So I feel like, yeah,
- 17:14Speaker 1: that was a big thing growing up, trying to overcome
- 17:17Speaker 1: that as a kid. That's hard to overcome. You know,
- 17:18Speaker 1: you're already kind of shy and nervous as a kid,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and yeah, and then you have all these eyes on
- 17:22Speaker 1: you and you're having to prove yourself and live up
- 17:23Speaker 1: to expectations that that can be a lot of on
- 17:25Speaker 1: a kid, and luckily it all worked out.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Was it one of those things too, Like when you
- 17:29Speaker 3: would win and if you're if your doubt, your old
- 17:32Speaker 3: man wasn't there, Like you're you're calling to be like, hey,
- 17:34Speaker 3: I won, Dad.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Is the first guy I call after every race even nowadays,
- 17:37Speaker 1: Like it's just how That's how it's been for twenty years,
- 17:40Speaker 1: and that's just how it is. You know. So it's
- 17:42Speaker 1: just and it's the role has changed over the years.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Like I used to call my dad for advice, and
- 17:46Speaker 1: now it's just calling him just to call him, you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: and uh and talk to him. Just it's almost routine.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So yeah, he's still the first one on my phone.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So that is cool. Your dad was in his prime
- 17:55Speaker 1: right now, who would win in the race? I've always
- 17:57Speaker 1: thought my dad was the best race card driver I've
- 17:59Speaker 1: ever seen thing, whether that's just a son and me,
- 18:02Speaker 1: you know, admiring your parents, I think Dad's the best
- 18:04Speaker 1: one that's ever lived, you know, And that's just how
- 18:06Speaker 1: it's always been. So I feel like if that was
- 18:08Speaker 1: in his prime, if we were both thirty years old
- 18:11Speaker 1: going at it, I feel like he would he would
- 18:13Speaker 1: really he would beat me. He would tell you opposite,
- 18:15Speaker 1: he would tell you that I would beat him. But yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 1: Dad to me is will always and uh always has been,
- 18:21Speaker 1: always will be the best one out there.
- 18:23Speaker 3: Who would want to anybody back there have an idea
- 18:27Speaker 3: that's good put him on the spot. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 18:29Speaker 3: like you would wonder if somebod there like, oh.
- 18:32Speaker 1: You know, yeah, actually, Ryn wouldn't stand a chance. Dave's
- 18:37Speaker 1: got that my dad still races. My dad's sixty one
- 18:40Speaker 1: and he still races dirt sprint cars.
- 18:42Speaker 2: That's badass. Yeah, he diets wild. Yeah, because there is
- 18:44Speaker 2: that I feel like with father son. I have two girls,
- 18:46Speaker 2: but father son like dynamics. There's always like a point
- 18:48Speaker 2: in life where it's like kid beats you in shooting hoops,
- 18:51Speaker 2: kid beats you on air hockey or something.
- 18:53Speaker 1: H Yeah, do you guys ever have one of those moments? Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 1: We were a big ping pong family in my household,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and I remember I got to the age I started
- 19:00Speaker 1: beating my dad in ping pong and like horse, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and I had the basketball and they just just grinded
- 19:06Speaker 1: his gears. You know. I feel like ping pong.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I've seen father sons go at it and like when
- 19:11Speaker 3: the sun's taken over, like sports painful for the old man.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like that's anything. Your girls might do
- 19:16Speaker 1: it to you when they start beating you in anything,
- 19:18Speaker 1: you're like, hush, I'll make sure. I'll make sure you
- 19:21Speaker 1: guys want to go on the field and block you
- 19:23Speaker 1: beat me. Get the pads on, Yeah, get the pads on.
- 19:26Speaker 1: We're gonna win on one. Yeah, one on ones. Outside
- 19:29Speaker 1: what's been the biggest.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Win outside of being the NASCAR Cups of your champion,
- 19:36Speaker 3: the biggest win of your career where you feel like, yo,
- 19:39Speaker 3: I'm on my way. Biggest moments where you've had the
- 19:42Speaker 3: biggest high of winning.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I feel like you see that your
- 19:45Speaker 1: first one. I won my first Cup race in twenty seventeen,
- 19:48Speaker 1: so I feel like, you know, then it's like, all right,
- 19:51Speaker 1: I feel like I'm kind of here right. It was
- 19:53Speaker 1: my second year in the NASCAR deal, and I'm like,
- 19:55Speaker 1: all right, I feel like I'm kind of established, like
- 19:57Speaker 1: I finally won a race. All that Either that one
- 20:00Speaker 1: or we wanted Martinsville to get us to Phoenix this year.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I grew up just south of Martinsville, Virginia. That was
- 20:07Speaker 1: like a home track for me. So I think winning that,
- 20:10Speaker 1: winning at my home track went in there to get
- 20:12Speaker 1: to Phoenix. That's won us a championship. I was pretty
- 20:15Speaker 1: fired up on that one. So I think either either
- 20:17Speaker 1: one of those two is uh his top one? Yeah?
- 20:20Speaker 1: How high up is uh Talladigan Knights on your list
- 20:22Speaker 1: of movies, it's up there. I like Talladegan Knights, I
- 20:24Speaker 1: really do. I usually tell people it's ninety five percent true?
- 20:27Speaker 1: Oh really, I love that Talladega Knights accurate. I'm like
- 20:32Speaker 1: ninety five percent of it. Yeah, my life based on
- 20:34Speaker 1: my life. Yeah, actually, yeah, what's that? What's the five percent?
- 20:39Speaker 1: When he's in the wheelchair, potato, he doesn't have his legs,
- 20:41Speaker 1: don't worry all the shifting, all the shifting, yeah, or
- 20:45Speaker 1: John Gerard drinking a fucking machiato or something. Why is
- 20:48Speaker 1: out the racing? Remember that? Now? You never do a
- 20:51Speaker 1: shaking bake out there. Shaking bake. You guys got cool
- 20:53Speaker 1: handshakes sometimes, Yeah, we have good buddies. A few of
- 20:55Speaker 1: us have cool handshakes.
- 20:56Speaker 2: If you want to be the racer you claim to be,
- 20:58Speaker 2: you need to have a secret handshake with every one
- 21:00Speaker 2: of the guys in your picture.
- 21:01Speaker 1: It's like like Lebron has it with every guy his team. Yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: it's like, I don't.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Want to back to see Josh Allen with the bills.
- 21:05Speaker 2: He's dapping everybody up doing all these cool things.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I don't know how they learned that. It's like they're
- 21:08Speaker 1: throwing gang signs out there. So many people on the roster,
- 21:11Speaker 1: How do you remember all the handshakes? Did you guys
- 21:13Speaker 1: have handshakes with everyone on your roster. A couple. We
- 21:15Speaker 1: got one.
- 21:16Speaker 2: It's just a little that's a little small, a little
- 21:20Speaker 2: bit more. There's a more elaborate one. We haven't seen
- 21:22Speaker 2: U see each other for a long time. There's a
- 21:24Speaker 2: big hug involved. It's yea yeah, specially choreograph it though,
- 21:27Speaker 2: like you practiced it and everything. Yeah, my daughters and
- 21:29Speaker 2: I we have secret handshakes.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Nice. Yeah, nice. I think maybe with my kids I'll
- 21:33Speaker 1: when I do have them all. Yeah, make a handshake.
- 21:36Speaker 3: You were talking earlier, you said sometimes on the shake
- 21:38Speaker 3: and bake, that stuff happens. We don't like, say car,
- 21:42Speaker 3: I'm actually if team members are out there and it's
- 21:46Speaker 3: like you know right right, yeah, yeah, Ryan's got the
- 21:49Speaker 3: faster car.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Yes, sling shot Yeah yeah, I guess you're right. Yes, yeah,
- 21:52Speaker 1: you see your boys said each other man.
- 21:53Speaker 3: You know what you you got the gas. I gotta
- 21:55Speaker 3: I gotta hit the pits soon, but I'll ride you
- 21:57Speaker 3: out so that way you can climb up.
- 21:59Speaker 1: No, I mean, like we don't talk to each other
- 22:01Speaker 1: during the race, like if us three were drivers, Like
- 22:03Speaker 1: I can't talk to you what like we'll just different teams,
- 22:06Speaker 1: different radio fracks. Can't you Jim in Bay Ryan, you're
- 22:08Speaker 1: doing to help a job? Man? How much I hold
- 22:09Speaker 1: these boys off back here? No, you can't do that, guy,
- 22:13Speaker 1: We need you. Uh no, well we can't talk to
- 22:16Speaker 1: each other on the radios. Different drivers, But the would
- 22:21Speaker 1: you say the sling shot? Yeah, there's a variation of it,
- 22:25Speaker 1: like if we go to like towadegg or something like
- 22:27Speaker 1: drafting tracks, Like you'll see people do that, but you're not,
- 22:29Speaker 1: like it's nots choreographed.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Is like when you say drafting when you say drafting tracks? Yeah,
- 22:34Speaker 2: is that like longer straightaways?
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, you get speeds up eg yeah yeah yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 1: The big race track those are kind of tracks you
- 22:40Speaker 1: like the race. What's the perfect race for you? You're like, yes,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I'm going to my spot here. The short tracks are great,
- 22:46Speaker 1: like Martinsville, like a tiny half mile, Like that's a
- 22:48Speaker 1: tiny race track. The bigger one, I mean we are
- 22:51Speaker 1: tracks range from half mile to two and a half miles,
- 22:53Speaker 1: so massive differences. Uh well, like which one did.
- 22:56Speaker 3: You go to?
- 22:57Speaker 1: I remember p I R and the one in Nashville. Okay, okay, yeah,
- 23:00Speaker 1: so they're pi R in Nashville. They're like just over
- 23:02Speaker 1: a mile, so you imagine these places are over twice
- 23:05Speaker 1: the size of like Nashville. Yeah, these big, big places. Yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 1: that's where you see that a little bit more. And
- 23:10Speaker 1: you like the short tracks, Like from a technical standpoint,
- 23:12Speaker 1: isn't more difficult? Technical? Yeah, better driver shows out in
- 23:15Speaker 1: the shorter tracks. Yeah, yeah, I think so, and and
- 23:17Speaker 1: all of us grew up racing those oh out here
- 23:20Speaker 1: kind of cooking right now working. I might get behind
- 23:22Speaker 1: the wheel, you might, you might do it. You gotta
- 23:25Speaker 1: get out tall. No, you are taller than I thought
- 23:27Speaker 1: you'd be, though, seven brother, Yeah, it's a lot of lengths.
- 23:30Speaker 1: You were like six three. I was hoping that. Actually,
- 23:32Speaker 1: like six seven to me is like kind of like
- 23:33Speaker 1: zoo animal worthy.
- 23:34Speaker 2: It's like, well it's too tall to me, right, yeah,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I think that's six two six three ranges is Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 2: Like once you're out of your sport, right like now,
- 23:41Speaker 2: I'm just kind of like this neanderthal walking around the earth.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Well and then everyone sees you out at the ball.
- 23:45Speaker 1: You're like everyone comes probably comes out to you, like
- 23:47Speaker 1: what do you do? You gotta do something? Yeah, I
- 23:49Speaker 1: always do you play for? Yeah?
- 23:51Speaker 2: The good news is I was able to play for
- 23:52Speaker 2: a team definitely think about those guys that are my
- 23:54Speaker 2: height that didn't make it, and it's like, you just
- 23:56Speaker 2: got to get your whole life telling people no, I
- 23:57Speaker 2: never played sports. Yeah yeah, and that's kind of a
- 23:59Speaker 2: nice lit dubb for me to walk around it. And
- 24:01Speaker 2: I've also lost sixty pounds. People are like you look,
- 24:03Speaker 2: you look familiar. Yeah, you have to play basketball. Yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 2: I got baseball in Vegas a couple of weeks ago.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Really baseball I got. I got to gain some weight,
- 24:10Speaker 2: That's what I knew. Hey, listen, you gotta we gotta
- 24:12Speaker 2: put some elpies on.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Yeah. Well I notice your left handed. Are you a pitcher? Yeah?
- 24:17Speaker 1: From organized sports? Did you ever play them? Did you
- 24:20Speaker 1: ever want to do him? Yeah? I played baseball. I
- 24:21Speaker 1: played basketball. I loved it. I love playing basketball the most.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Probably my my uncle, so my dad's brother, he's six'.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Four he Was he's in The West Virginia hall Of
- 24:30Speaker 1: fame for. Basketball got drafted by The lakers in the.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Eighties oh, SHIT i did summer ball with like magic and.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Shit AND i heard. Him yeah that's. What, yeah the
- 24:38Speaker 1: knees were destroyed and ended up going. Racing but, uh,
- 24:42Speaker 1: YEAH i love basketball just BECAUSE i grew up around
- 24:44Speaker 1: it my. FAMILY i love. BASEBALL i got hit in
- 24:46Speaker 1: the face with the pitch one time AND i was, like,
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah i'm done playing.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Baseball i'm not doing this ten, dude we. Haven't we
- 24:54Speaker 2: had a playtician yesterday AND i, literally like eight, nine
- 24:57Speaker 2: ten years. OLD i quit hockey once the checking st
- 25:00Speaker 2: arden Baseball i'd always step away WHEN i swung round balls.
- 25:03Speaker 1: CAME i was, like get me the fuck out of.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Here it.
- 25:05Speaker 2: WAS i was like the biggest pussy growing up of all.
- 25:07Speaker 2: Time UNTIL i shared that with. You we have something
- 25:09Speaker 2: in comments and.
