- 0:00We make resolutions to change certain behaviours.
- 0:04Our minds are made-up. We are certain that we can make
- 0:09the needed change. Many people make New Year's
- 0:12resolutions to change something, perhaps to lose weight, to
- 0:17discontinue some habit, to avoid expressing anger or some other
- 0:23intention we have, such as to be a more forgiving person, to
- 0:28express love and goodwill towards others more often,
- 0:32etcetera. Putting aside those habits for
- 0:35the time being that lead to physical addiction, withdrawal
- 0:39symptoms, etcetera, which necessarily fall into a somewhat
- 0:43more intensive category of review and discussion, we
- 0:47determine that from henceforth we will not do the particular
- 0:52thing that we are focused on changing and then we wind up in
- 0:57the situation and see ourselves doing it.
- 1:01It may be something like giving up certain habits of eating
- 1:04snacks between meals. This occurs frequently.
- 1:09We then find ourselves going to the refrigerator or the pantry
- 1:13and taking the snacks we determine to avoid.
- 1:18Another one tries to justify various forms of sexual
- 1:21enjoyment under the guise of it being a tantric method of
- 1:25gaining mastery over the sexual power.
- 1:29While it may be possible that an initiated tantric practitioner
- 1:33with guidance and a realized teacher could indeed find a way
- 1:38through to the proposed result, in most cases we find that there
- 1:44is no real change or transformation or mastery, but
- 1:48simply another way to justify sexual activity.
- 1:52When the mental will has decided, for whatever reason, to
- 1:56abstain and shift the energy focus elsewhere.
- 2:01The vital being is attached to its habits of enjoyment.
- 2:05It does not easily give them up. The mental decision may thus
- 2:09come into conflict with the vital desire nature.
- 2:14It is a virtually universal human experience that the desire
- 2:18of the vital finds a way to justify its continuation to the
- 2:22mental being, and we thus come up with justifications and
- 2:27excuses for the continuance of those very actions that we had
- 2:31previously determined to stop. The mother notes quote even the
- 2:38most beautiful theories. Even if one knows mentally many
- 2:42things and holds admirable principles, that is not
- 2:47sufficiently strong to create a will capable of resisting an
- 2:50impulse at one time. You are quite determined.
- 2:54You have decided that it would be thus, for example, that you
- 2:59would not do such a thing. It is settled, you will not do
- 3:03it. But how is it that suddenly you
- 3:07do not know how or why, nor what has happened?
- 3:11You have not decided anything at all, and then you immediately
- 3:15find in yourself an excellent reason for doing the thing.
- 3:20Among others, there's a certain kind of excuse which is always
- 3:24given. Well, if I do it this time, at
- 3:27least I shall be convinced that it is very bad, and I shall do
- 3:32it no longer, and this will be the last time.
- 3:36It is the prettiest excuse one always gives to oneself.
- 3:41This is the last time I am doing it.
- 3:43This time I am doing it to understand perfectly that it is
- 3:47bad and that it must not be done and I shall not do it anymore.
- 3:52This is the last time. Every time it is the last time,
- 3:58and you begin again. Of course, there are some who
- 4:03have less clear ideas and who say to themselves, after all,
- 4:08why don't I want to do it? These are theories, they are
- 4:11principles that might not be true.
- 4:14If I have this impulse, what is it that tells me that this
- 4:18impulse is not better than a theory?
- 4:21It is not for them the last time.
- 4:24It is something they accept as quite natural.
- 4:29Between these two extremes there are all the possibilities.
- 4:34But the most dangerous of all is to say, well, I am doing it once
- 4:38more this time. That will purify me of this
- 4:42afterwards. I shall no longer do it now.
- 4:46The purification is never enough.
