- 0:01Speaker 1: I'm not getting hold of.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Rob Manford finally listened to a nice dance Crats that
- 0:17Speaker 2: was unique today, AJ, Rob Manford finally listened to you.
- 0:20Speaker 2: He decided to side with Christopher Sanchez, just like you said.
- 0:25Speaker 2: For the past week, I was talked about monthly Award
- 0:29Speaker 2: of all Time, the Picture of the Month going.
- 0:31Speaker 1: To I get it, and I understand Crouch's argument for Miz,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and I love the Mizz team Poland all the way, baby,
- 0:39Speaker 1: But Christopher Sanchez didn't give up a run. He's close
- 0:42Speaker 1: to getting Oral Herscheizer's all time record for most innings
- 0:46Speaker 1: without a run. You go a whole month without giving
- 0:49Speaker 1: up a run. I'm sorry. You deserve a Picture of
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Month the only way. I mean, unless you threw
- 0:54Speaker 1: like two no hitters and are a perfect game and
- 0:56Speaker 1: a no hitter did something crazy. I don't know how
- 0:58Speaker 1: you don't get the the award with zero runs given up.
- 1:03Speaker 2: That's good point, Kratz. If there was a no note
- 1:05Speaker 2: mixed in for Miz, it would have tilted in his favor.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think the no note would have overruled the scoreless month.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And by the way, may I note for Sanchez is
- 1:14Speaker 2: pitching tonight against the padres with his scoreless inning streak
- 1:17Speaker 2: on the line, and it is getting very very up
- 1:20Speaker 2: there towards the Oral Hirschheiser record. What does he need?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Probably two more starts to take it from oral. That's
- 1:26Speaker 2: a tall task.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It is twelve, it is twelve and a third. But
- 1:32Speaker 3: whatever it is, it's ridiculous to get that many starts
- 1:36Speaker 3: with no earned runs, no no runs allowed, no runs
- 1:39Speaker 3: allowed at all. But essentially miz did throw a no
- 1:41Speaker 3: hitter the whole month. He essentially gave up no hits.
- 1:45Speaker 3: But Sanchez struck out twice as many guys as he
- 1:48Speaker 3: gave up hits in the month. It's crazy, two of
- 1:53Speaker 3: the greatest months.
- 1:54Speaker 4: What do you get?
- 1:54Speaker 3: Like, do you get like a little standalone plaque that
- 1:56Speaker 3: like says you're a pitcher of the month.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Do you get a watch? Doesn't really matter to them,
- 2:00Speaker 4: they're both dealing.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I bet your poker trophies are nicer. I don't know.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I don't know what they do.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The watches are nice watches. I don't know. I don't
- 2:11Speaker 1: think I everyone player of the month, player of the week?
- 2:13Speaker 1: I got you get a watch for?
- 2:15Speaker 4: Oh?
- 2:15Speaker 2: I didn't know that well. I thought it depends if
- 2:18Speaker 2: it's a if it's a sponsor that year. If they
- 2:21Speaker 2: don't have the sponsor, they don't give out the free stuff.
- 2:24Speaker 2: I think it depends on that.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I can honestly say I've never worn it, but it's
- 2:27Speaker 1: in my safe somewhere. I think I have two of them.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Let's just say Player of the Week and whatever, whatever
- 2:33Speaker 1: week it was. They're nice watches, though, Yeah, they're nice watches.
- 2:38Speaker 1: That's sick.
- 2:39Speaker 3: If you got a good sponsorship, a nice player of
- 2:41Speaker 3: the year or player of the month watch, like that'd
- 2:43Speaker 3: be awesome.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Triple A.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I one player of the year and I got I
- 2:46Speaker 3: got a nice watch. I wore that John toe broke nice.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Okay, So I think that one of our guests later
- 2:52Speaker 2: in the show, will your bray you has won a
- 2:54Speaker 2: pitcher or sorry, a player of the week or a
- 2:57Speaker 2: month award, probably week. So let's store that in the
- 3:01Speaker 2: memory bank and let's talk. That's the whole thing. Thank you,
- 3:05Speaker 2: somebody remembered, all right. In the meantime, let's charge. Let's
- 3:11Speaker 2: charge Aaron Judge is hurt. We're going to run through
- 3:16Speaker 2: a series of tweets. So after meeting with team position,
- 3:19Speaker 2: doctor Ahmed, there's nothing new on Judge. Boone said he's
- 3:22Speaker 2: expected to see a specialist. Said, the Yankees want Boone
- 3:26Speaker 2: to see a specialist because his injury is in a
- 3:28Speaker 2: unique spot. This is Gary Phillips helping us out with
- 3:30Speaker 2: the tweets and the quotes. The quote from Boonie, Wait,
- 3:33Speaker 2: hold on, go back to the other one just for
- 3:35Speaker 2: one second, if you can, thank you. We want an
- 3:37Speaker 2: expert to weigh in on this particular part of the body. Obviously,
- 3:40Speaker 2: will continue to see how he feels day to day.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Now next one, we'll do a few here just to
- 3:44Speaker 2: lay it all out and then get thoughts from the crowd.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Boone said Judge has a bone bruise in his right
- 3:49Speaker 2: rib area that impacts him when he swings. Judge has
- 3:51Speaker 2: been dealing with the nagging soreness for a couple of weeks.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Judge isn't starting tonight, Boone said. The hope is it
- 3:57Speaker 2: was caught early and won't be a long term injury.
- 3:59Speaker 2: That was yesday before the game, and that's why he
- 4:02Speaker 2: wasn't starting in that one. And then here's the ft
- 4:05Speaker 2: tweet that yes, he will need some imaging for that
- 4:08Speaker 2: bone bruise. He's been dealing with it for weeks and
- 4:12Speaker 2: it's become more than that from the weekend, so it
- 4:14Speaker 2: is escalated aja enough to start getting some things figured out.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Judge has been very durable for the Yankees. He had
- 4:22Speaker 2: the fluke injury a few years ago. But and what
- 4:25Speaker 2: I know, you missed some time and we were worried
- 4:26Speaker 2: about the outfield. Arm came back. Arm looks great, right,
- 4:29Speaker 2: We saw that last year. This year this is the
- 4:31Speaker 2: new injury that he's dealing with. And you got a
- 4:34Speaker 2: balance making sure that he's one hundred percent for a
- 4:36Speaker 2: team that should be okay and make the playoffs. Your
- 4:39Speaker 2: thoughts on all.
- 4:40Speaker 1: This, I'm just wondering what this is. I mean, bone
- 4:44Speaker 1: bruise in the rib cage and it's effecting. Is it
- 4:46Speaker 1: like up into the armpit? Like where is this bone?
- 4:49Speaker 1: He didn't get hit by a pitch, clearly because he
- 4:51Speaker 1: would get hit in the left side. So how did
- 4:53Speaker 1: he do with diving? Did he do it picking up
- 4:56Speaker 1: his kids? You know like Matthew Boyd allegedly happened the
- 4:59Speaker 1: other you know a few months ago. I don't how
- 5:01Speaker 1: did he do That's what I don't know. How did
- 5:02Speaker 1: he do this? Right? And then a bone bruise I mean,
- 5:05Speaker 1: bone bruises can hurt. Now, they can hurt for a while.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But it's been lingering for a couple of weeks. Has
- 5:10Speaker 1: he been getting treatment? Has he not been getting treatment?
- 5:12Speaker 1: What's the new specialist gonna say? Is he gonna have
- 5:14Speaker 1: to go on the I l is it? Is it
- 5:16Speaker 1: effect us throwing? Does it affect his hitting? There's so
- 5:18Speaker 1: many more questions I have that weren't answered.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Hey real quick, just so that Matthew Boyd doesn't catch
- 5:24Speaker 2: any straight Yes.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Ye, yeah, you don't have kids, Scott. You've never hurt
- 5:33Speaker 1: yourself picking him up. They get heavy about fifteen years.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Old, I've heard. So I don't care about anything. I
- 5:40Speaker 2: just care about you and the trolls. So I was
- 5:42Speaker 2: just helping you out.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I mean there's certain people in the chat that troll
- 5:45Speaker 1: no matter what, even when we say the right thing. So,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know, trolls.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Kickrocks, trolls control. Yeah, Crat's one thing I'd like to
- 5:53Speaker 2: add before you comment. Iron Judge does not look the
- 5:57Speaker 2: same for in Aaron Judge years A long time, right,
- 6:01Speaker 2: if Aaron Judge years or dog years, It's like I'm
- 6:03Speaker 2: trying to look I mean, he homered on the twenty fourth,
- 6:07Speaker 2: so not this past Sunday, the Sunday before, and then
- 6:10Speaker 2: the homer before that came on the tenth. So we're
- 6:14Speaker 2: looking at what one two, I mean two homers in
- 6:18Speaker 2: the past what three weeks and change or so? That's
- 6:22Speaker 2: not Aaron Judge.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I mean, yes, you're you're right. Aaron Judge just hits
- 6:27Speaker 3: dingers whenever he wants, and when he's not, you think
- 6:29Speaker 3: something is going on. I played with Judge two different times.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I played with him in seventeen when he was hurt
- 6:35Speaker 3: in his rookie year and he played through it.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Should have been MVP.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I played with him in twenty when he got hurt
- 6:40Speaker 3: and couldn't play through it. I promise obviously it's not.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not the one feeling the pain that
- 6:47Speaker 3: he's feeling. But he hurt himself in the home run
- 6:49Speaker 3: Derby on a swing he felt his shoulder pop, and
- 6:53Speaker 3: then he ended up playing through it and had probably
- 6:55Speaker 3: the worst month of his career in August. Finally got
- 7:00Speaker 3: healthy in September and hit fifteen homers. When this guy
- 7:03Speaker 3: is healthy, which clearly he's not right now, he puts
- 7:06Speaker 3: up big numbers and if he's playing through something. He
- 7:09Speaker 3: plays through a lot of things, and for him to
- 7:12Speaker 3: be able to be out on the field, just like
- 7:13Speaker 3: he came back from the elbow injury last year. He
- 7:16Speaker 3: knows his limits and for him to ask off it
- 7:19Speaker 3: concerns me because it's so odd, Like what happened? Are
- 7:23Speaker 3: we talking about some type of like high innercstal? Is
- 7:27Speaker 3: it a bone bruise? Is that worse than a contusion?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Did he hit something that we don't know about it?
- 7:33Speaker 3: There's hopefully we find out more and hopefully this isn't
- 7:35Speaker 3: a an I el stip.
- 7:39Speaker 2: I think it's going to be.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Someone in the chats. Did he dove? I guess, And
- 7:46Speaker 1: that's kind of where it started.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I don't know if diving and ball and you stretch,
- 7:55Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Maybe maybe obviously we can't.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yankee's hearn a good spot. Yankees are in a good
- 8:00Speaker 1: spot because Yale is not very good, so they're you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: they're raising them and then the rest of the al
- 8:05Speaker 1: it's kind of Mariners are hot now though, but they
- 8:08Speaker 1: at least have a little bit of room to play
- 8:11Speaker 1: with here.
- 8:12Speaker 4: And they also have a lineup that is you watch
- 8:14Speaker 4: them night in and night out. Yes, I get it.
- 8:16Speaker 3: You know, they can still strike out, but Ben Rice
- 8:19Speaker 3: steps up, Bellager steps up, like it's not guys that
- 8:23Speaker 3: are having like all career years besides Ben Judge Rice,
- 8:29Speaker 3: and you know, everybody's just kind of I've seen it
- 8:31Speaker 3: where they've they've strung together that thirteen run inning, they
- 8:34Speaker 3: didn't hit a single ding or that inning, like for
- 8:37Speaker 3: a team that everyone's oh the Yankees, Oh, all they
- 8:40Speaker 3: ever do is just slug and hit home runs and
- 8:43Speaker 3: strike out. To me, I feel like this team does
- 8:45Speaker 3: a little bit more than that. What's the reason. Have
- 8:47Speaker 3: they had a change of approach?
- 8:49Speaker 4: I doubt that.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I think they've just, you know, kind of fed off
- 8:53Speaker 3: of each other. Guy like Cabero is in the lineup
- 8:56Speaker 3: and he's not just swing or nothing type of guy.
- 9:01Speaker 3: You know, you still have and he still have a
- 9:02Speaker 3: lineup where Grisham's not hot, still have a lineup where
- 9:05Speaker 3: Jazz Chisholm's not hot. Which, by the way, Hammer Hamilton
- 9:09Speaker 3: the comment that he made yesterday about jazz chiseling on
- 9:11Speaker 3: the Jimmy Kimmel Show, maybe laugh if you haven't look
- 9:15Speaker 3: it up, you gotta say, all right, he said, he said,
- 9:19Speaker 3: he said jazz is jazz is on the Jimmy was a.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Jimmy Kimmel Show or was it the Fountain.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Jimmy Fallon And he goes and then he jimes in,
- 9:32Speaker 3: he goes, whoa, he goes hitting two thirty nine on
- 9:35Speaker 3: the Jimmy Fallon Show.
- 9:36Speaker 1: That's something he said. How do you, ever, how do
- 9:39Speaker 1: you get on the Jimmy Fallon Show hitting two thirty nine?
- 9:42Speaker 4: Only hit it two thirty nine?
- 9:43Speaker 1: You're right, You're right. It was good.
- 9:44Speaker 4: It was a good chirp.
- 9:45Speaker 3: I feel like, I feel like a player would appreciate
- 9:47Speaker 3: a good chirp and then he would be mad for
- 9:49Speaker 3: a little bit, but then he'd be like, well, I'm
- 9:50Speaker 3: only hitting two forty, so I gotta gotta pick it up.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Also, this is one of the best broadcasters of our generation.
- 9:56Speaker 2: He's incredible. So he's got a lot of dirt new spikes,
- 9:59Speaker 2: and he's just a high respected dude. So and he's funny.
- 10:02Speaker 2: So I think, you know, if Jazz has a sense
- 10:04Speaker 2: of humor too, he will hear it and go, that
- 10:06Speaker 2: was good. I like that, right, I'm with you. Though,
- 10:10Speaker 2: the offense has a little bit more complexion to it,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and I think the Caviero example is perfect because the
- 10:16Speaker 2: guy that he replaced in Volpi for the previous seasons
- 10:20Speaker 2: many thought was too homer happy, big a swing or
- 10:25Speaker 2: nothing for a guy that felt like he should be
- 10:27Speaker 2: kind of a little more versatile with his approach to
- 10:30Speaker 2: the sport, right, you know, fast player. It's like, hey,
- 10:33Speaker 2: this guy should be getting more knocks, getting on base,
- 10:35Speaker 2: still mixing the power. But then Cavierra comes in and
- 10:38Speaker 2: he is that guy, right. He gives you more variety,
- 10:41Speaker 2: and he gives you a lot of speed that he's
- 10:42Speaker 2: actually utilizing because he's getting on base. So it has
- 10:45Speaker 2: helped the team create a little more versatility. So we'll
- 10:48Speaker 2: keep an eye on Judge. We'll let you know if
- 10:49Speaker 2: we hear anything. Let's step aside and get ready for
- 10:51Speaker 2: our front office. Unfiltered segment. Jim Bowden on Line one,

- 11:55Speaker 2: support our show and tell them we sent you a
- 12:05Speaker 2: j I think this is Kratz's favorite topic. Like, he's
- 12:08Speaker 2: a pretty happy dude. If you want to piss him off,
- 12:10Speaker 2: then you take a top end pitching prospect and you
- 12:15Speaker 2: put him in a bulk roll to essentially start his career.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Chase Dolander got that little taste with the Rockies after
- 12:22Speaker 2: he was roaring, then he gets hurt. Coincidence, I think
- 12:26Speaker 2: not last year above Chandler, we made fun of that.
- 12:30Speaker 2: This time it's the New York Mets, who apparently AJ
- 12:33Speaker 2: are so good that they don't really have space for
- 12:36Speaker 2: Jonah than to just be a starter, and it's much
- 12:38Speaker 2: better for him to be a bulk guy. Last year
- 12:41Speaker 2: showed flashes. I know he's young. I know he's still
- 12:43Speaker 2: got to figure out consistently landing pitches in the zone's
- 12:46Speaker 2: oozing with talent. He's their number one pitching prospect, and
- 12:49Speaker 2: they decided that since they only have three good starters,
- 12:53Speaker 2: they would have him joined the bulk crew. So you
- 12:55Speaker 2: have the one crew that is Nolan McLain, Freddy Peralta
- 12:59Speaker 2: and Christian Scott. They get to start like big boys.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Then the other crew that has gone through their struggles
- 13:04Speaker 2: in Sean Mania and David Peterson, him and I got
- 13:05Speaker 2: some Bilo back lately. So maybe he's going to eventually
- 13:08Speaker 2: get to join varsity. But Tom goes to JV where
- 13:11Speaker 2: he's like in this abyss of being a bulk guy
- 13:15Speaker 2: after being a starter for his entire career in the
- 13:17Speaker 2: minor leagues. Make it make sense where we're trying to
- 13:19Speaker 2: get these guys ready and then you bring them up
- 13:21Speaker 2: in a different role. I do not get it. You
- 13:23Speaker 2: want you want to give him a little break. He
- 13:25Speaker 2: doesn't have to fit to top of the order in
- 13:27Speaker 2: the first inning. That's so sweet of you. You want
- 13:30Speaker 2: to do that with a vet who can't get guys
- 13:31Speaker 2: out in the first inning. I'm okay with that. I
- 13:33Speaker 2: get it. You want to win games, But when you're
- 13:36Speaker 2: a team trying to blossom your you know, and grow
- 13:39Speaker 2: your top pitching prospect, are you not just like punching
- 13:42Speaker 2: his ego in the face right from the jump and saying, yeah,
- 13:45Speaker 2: we don't think you can handle the top of the order, dude,
- 13:47Speaker 2: so let's ease you in the middle of the game. Uh.
- 13:51Speaker 1: We didn't have to worry about it because he got
- 13:52Speaker 1: optioned to Triple A, so it doesn't there's no more
- 13:55Speaker 1: bulk crew. He gone, Uh, yeah, I don't know. I mean,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I didn't know they had this many good pictures that
- 14:00Speaker 1: they could cover this. But hey, David Stearns does David
- 14:03Speaker 1: Stearns things, and the Mets. He did worked with Milwaukee.
- 14:06Speaker 1: It hasn't worked yet with the Mets. We'll see what happens.
- 14:09Speaker 1: But I don't understand this. If he's a top prospect.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I said this. I did Kate Horton's day major league debut,
- 14:15Speaker 1: and he was placing the Mets and he had an opener,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and we asked Craig Counsel, and he said, well, we
- 14:19Speaker 1: just think it's better, you know, if he doesn't face.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He actually never said that. He just goes, wow, we
- 14:25Speaker 1: just think it's better for someone else to pitch the
- 14:27Speaker 1: first inning. So you're telling a kid that in this
- 14:29Speaker 1: big league start, he's not good enough to face Lindor
- 14:32Speaker 1: Soto and Alonso. But then the second time they came up,
- 14:35Speaker 1: Horton was on the mound and they came up with
- 14:37Speaker 1: the bases loaded and he got out of it. So
- 14:40Speaker 1: that's the thing for me that I don't understand is
- 14:42Speaker 1: why you do this just if you think he's good
- 14:45Speaker 1: enough to be a starting pitcher, and let him be
- 14:47Speaker 1: a starting pitcher. And the other thing they used to
- 14:50Speaker 1: get me drive me crazy. I used to tell our managers,
- 14:54Speaker 1: some of my managers this too, Like they would pinch
- 14:56Speaker 1: hit me in the ninth inning and we're down by three,
- 14:59Speaker 1: but I didn't start, and I'd pinch it and with
- 15:02Speaker 1: nobody on base, and I'd say, well, I'm not good
- 15:04Speaker 1: enough to start the game, but I'm good enough to
- 15:06Speaker 1: come into the ninth inning and pinch it when we're
- 15:08Speaker 1: you need something to win the game, Like, something doesn't
- 15:10Speaker 1: add up here. So I don't know. There's a lot
- 15:13Speaker 1: that goes into this. There's so many more numbers than
- 15:15Speaker 1: when I played. But hey, I think if you think
- 15:18Speaker 1: this guy's good enough, you let him go and you
- 15:20Speaker 1: see how good he can be. I don't think you
- 15:21Speaker 1: need to protect him. And I think that's one of
- 15:23Speaker 1: the things, like we talked about yesterday with the innings
- 15:25Speaker 1: and the travel and all that, and now Connor Griffin
- 15:28Speaker 1: needs a break. According to Ken Rosenthal.
- 15:29Speaker 2: I just let these guys play and crats. Now they're like, oh,
- 15:33Speaker 2: well he didn't pitch well so and we need an
- 15:35Speaker 2: arm so let's send him down. It's like, oh, I'm sorry,
- 15:37Speaker 2: I didn't know you had the perfect rotation and that
- 15:39Speaker 2: your top pitching prospect doesn't deserve to start and then
- 15:43Speaker 2: be put in a position to succeed. It's just so
- 15:46Speaker 2: maddening because you see so many of these cases not work,
- 15:49Speaker 2: and so few of them actually seem like they make
- 15:51Speaker 2: any sense at all For a guy who's just cracking
- 15:53Speaker 2: the big leagues and has never done the bulkwork before.
- 15:56Speaker 3: That would be my thing. Is he is still twenty two.
- 15:59Speaker 3: His birthday is on June nineteenth. He's twenty two years old.
- 16:03Speaker 3: And to put him through this, is he juiced to
- 16:05Speaker 3: go to the big leagues? Absolutely?
- 16:07Speaker 4: Should his five.
- 16:08Speaker 3: To six ERA in triple A mean that he earned
- 16:13Speaker 3: his way to the big leagues or is it because
- 16:15Speaker 3: you he's on the forty man roster? So then he
- 16:18Speaker 3: goes to the big leagues and right, it's a small
- 16:20Speaker 3: sample size. He has a three to three RA for
- 16:23Speaker 3: this season, and then you send him down because he
- 16:28Speaker 3: just wasn't quite like what was he supposed to do
- 16:30Speaker 3: when he was up there?
- 16:31Speaker 1: Like what was the.
- 16:34Speaker 3: What was the idea of what was going to happen?
- 16:38Speaker 3: For the longevity, because that's what we always talk about.
- 16:41Speaker 3: They always talk about longevity of the season, longevity of careers,
- 16:44Speaker 3: all that stuff. Do you feel like he's ready to
- 16:47Speaker 3: be in the big leagues by calling him up? In
- 16:49Speaker 3: my opinion, they say yes, Then you send him down
- 16:53Speaker 3: and you're telling me that no, you don't think wait,
- 16:57Speaker 3: you did a few days ago, but now you don't.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And I think those are those are situations. A thirty
- 17:03Speaker 3: year old veteran that's in Triple A that's trying to
- 17:06Speaker 3: get back to the big leagues. Those kind of dudes
- 17:09Speaker 3: deal with that. Not Jonah Thong at twenty two years old,
- 17:12Speaker 3: almost twenty three years old, trying to deal with that, Like,
- 17:16Speaker 3: there's ways to get this accomplished, improve get better, and
- 17:20Speaker 3: your team get better. And it's not calling a twenty
- 17:23Speaker 3: two year old two year old up to fill in
- 17:26Speaker 3: or calling Bryce Eldrews up to pinch hit. Yeah, worked
- 17:30Speaker 3: last night, but you're just you're not getting the most
- 17:32Speaker 3: out of what you consider your value and prospects.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And the thing for me is a j if you
- 17:40Speaker 2: remember the let's use an example. Remember the Cardinals when
- 17:43Speaker 2: they were in their really good run, and sometimes they'd
- 17:45Speaker 2: bring a guy up first to be a bullpen guy,
- 17:48Speaker 2: and eventually he transitioned to starter. And by the way,
- 17:50Speaker 2: that didn't always work either. Not that I'm blaming them
- 17:53Speaker 2: for this, but Alex Rayes was a big deal and
- 17:55Speaker 2: they were bouncing him around and he ended up not
- 17:57Speaker 2: staying healthy. I know, I know, I know that might
- 17:59Speaker 2: not be fair. Let me get back to my main point.
- 18:02Speaker 2: The Cardinals did this because they had a good rotation,
- 18:05Speaker 2: so it's like, Okay, we don't have room for this guy,
- 18:07Speaker 2: so let's bring him up as a bullpen guy and
- 18:09Speaker 2: then eventually when there's space, will put him in the rotation.
- 18:12Speaker 2: This isn't one of those cases. Neither is Chase Dollander.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Neither was Bubba Chandler last year. They have rooms in the.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Row ways, Scott. This is a new way, though, This
- 18:21Speaker 1: is the new way that people think that you get
- 18:23Speaker 1: guys ready because they're the Other thing is they want
- 18:26Speaker 1: to protect these guys so much that they're almost scared
- 18:29Speaker 1: to fail. And we say this about trades. Guy teams
- 18:32Speaker 1: are more afraid to sign a guy because there might
- 18:35Speaker 1: something bad might happen, or make a trade because someone
- 18:37Speaker 1: might turn into something. Then make the trade for a
- 18:41Speaker 1: proven player, because if they put a guy in a
- 18:43Speaker 1: bullpen or they have an opener and the guy doesn't
- 18:47Speaker 1: do well after being in that role, be like, see,
- 18:50Speaker 1: we didn't think he was that good anyways. Whereas if
- 18:52Speaker 1: they throw him into the starting rotation and he does
- 18:54Speaker 1: really well, oh no, he's doing almost too well. More
- 18:57Speaker 1: people are scared of success than they are a failure,
- 18:59Speaker 1: and that's might feel like sometimes with these teams, they're
- 19:02Speaker 1: more scared that, oh man, we might have made a mistake,
- 19:05Speaker 1: or we're so scared to make the mistake, or we're
- 19:07Speaker 1: so scared this guy might actually be really good. Then
- 19:10Speaker 1: what then what do we do with them? That's just
- 19:12Speaker 1: the way it plays to me.
- 19:15Speaker 2: I want to make this important distinction too. Not every
- 19:19Speaker 2: team does this. No, I'll use a big market team
- 19:23Speaker 2: that is definitely very analytically driven that I don't think
- 19:26Speaker 2: does this at all. Do you guys remember any Yankees
- 19:29Speaker 2: doing this recently as they've called up their young starters, but.
- 19:32Speaker 1: They have good rotations. They also have freeed rod On
- 19:36Speaker 1: Cole forever.
- 19:38Speaker 2: No. But I'm saying, like, when Cam Schlittler came up,
- 19:41Speaker 2: did he do any bulk or did he just start?
- 19:44Speaker 1: I think you just started? Did he just start? He'll
- 19:48Speaker 1: start Rookie of the Year.
- 19:51Speaker 2: And that's a team that has too many starters in
- 19:54Speaker 2: the way that you would say, hey, I could understand
- 19:56Speaker 2: if they have to send a young guy eventually to
- 19:58Speaker 2: depend which is what Carlos Grange is going to do
- 20:01Speaker 2: because they don't have any starting spots for him, and
- 20:03Speaker 2: he throws freaking fire from the mound. But they're not
- 20:07Speaker 2: bringing guys up and doing the opener bulk action. I mean, Kratz,
- 20:11Speaker 2: you tell me if I'm wrong. Did they do that
- 20:12Speaker 2: when you were there? Because some orgs have been doing this,
- 20:14Speaker 2: you know, for several years now. So when we say, oh,
- 20:16Speaker 2: this is just the new thing, I'm like, is it
- 20:18Speaker 2: the new thing or is it the new thing for
- 20:20Speaker 2: some orgs? And should it be reconsidered for top prospects?
- 20:25Speaker 1: I don't.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, obviously I think it should be reconsidered
- 20:27Speaker 3: for top prospects. But I was there when guys in
- 20:31Speaker 3: Triple A with the Yankees. If guys were let's say
- 20:36Speaker 3: something happened and your start was in two days, they
- 20:41Speaker 3: would back you down from your start in case you
- 20:43Speaker 3: needed to get called up. They would prepare you. Okay,
- 20:47Speaker 3: we see it in ten days. There's a chance that
- 20:50Speaker 3: this guy is going to be needed. We need to
- 20:53Speaker 3: make sure that we have a bullpen guy that is
- 20:55Speaker 3: ready to go up for those ten days because they
- 20:58Speaker 3: only need four starters. That's how they would do it,
- 21:01Speaker 3: and they would work all their bullpen guys just like
- 21:04Speaker 3: they would be worked when they go to the big leagues.
- 21:06Speaker 3: You're not going from being the closer on the Triple
- 21:08Speaker 3: A team to the closer in the big league team.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Craig Kimberl like is once in a lifetime type of
- 21:16Speaker 3: guy who was doing that. So what the Yankees would do,
- 21:19Speaker 3: and I feel like this is how they really evaluate
- 21:22Speaker 3: what their prospects pitching wise are. In the minor leagues,
- 21:26Speaker 3: they'd say, you know what, when you go up to
- 21:27Speaker 3: the big leagues, you're going to throw two maybe three
- 21:30Speaker 3: innings out of the bullpen to mop up some innings.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And they do that in the minor leagues too, So
- 21:35Speaker 3: they're mimicking what they're doing in the big leagues. But
- 21:37Speaker 3: they're not calling guys up like a Michael King and saying,
- 21:41Speaker 3: you know what, we're going to have adam ant of
- 21:44Speaker 3: Vino start for you, and then you're going to go
- 21:46Speaker 3: in and start. Michael King's never done that. He has
- 21:48Speaker 3: his whole routine. Good teams preach to their minor leaguers,
- 21:51Speaker 3: figure out a routine go to the big league so
- 21:54Speaker 3: that when you go to the big leagues nothing is
- 21:56Speaker 3: different except for your paycheck and the brightness of the lights.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Mm hmm. I like that, yep. Put the guys in
- 22:03Speaker 2: a position to succeed. Hey, one more note before we
- 22:07Speaker 2: get to our next guest soon and Kratz, this is
- 22:11Speaker 2: one for you to start here. Aiden Miller one of
- 22:14Speaker 2: the top position player prospects for the Phillies. Unfortunately, he's
- 22:17Speaker 2: going to a medical procedure on Friday on his back.
- 22:20Speaker 2: He's been diagnosed with discogenic pain and facet inflammation in
- 22:25Speaker 2: the lumbar spine. This is Todd Seleki sending this tweet
- 22:28Speaker 2: out and said he was seen by spine specialists over
- 22:31Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. According to the Phillies, this
- 22:34Speaker 2: was someone that, if healthy, they thought could contribute to
- 22:36Speaker 2: the big league team this year. So looking more like
- 22:39Speaker 2: hopefully he gets well soon and can be a contributor
- 22:42Speaker 2: to the team in twenty seven.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I mean, when you start spine, you're talking about like
- 22:48Speaker 3: life life stuff. When you know a guy's spine is
- 22:52Speaker 3: getting messed up as far as like baseball injuries, spine,
- 22:56Speaker 3: hands and feet are, you can label him. However you won.
- 23:00Speaker 3: If you had foot injuries, you're like, don't ever get
- 23:03Speaker 3: foot injuries. If you had hand injuries, you would say
- 23:06Speaker 3: that same thing with back. And you see a lot
- 23:08Speaker 3: of guys that don't come back from it. Now, a
- 23:11Speaker 3: guy like Corey Seeger, he had the hip early. Now
- 23:14Speaker 3: he's starting to work on the bat like there's things
- 23:17Speaker 3: that you have to This doesn't sound like it's something
- 23:21Speaker 3: that oh, he was doing this wrong or that wrong.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Hopefully they get it nipped in the butt here and
- 23:26Speaker 3: he's able to come back as the player that they
- 23:28Speaker 3: think he is next year or just in the rest
- 23:31Speaker 3: of his career.
- 23:35Speaker 2: We are in the weeds. Let's pick an article. Hannah
- 23:39Speaker 2: Kaiser in her latest article wrote about managers do they matter?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Inside the paradox of the job? Built to be blamed?
- 23:48Speaker 2: And she spoke to some people that went unnamed but
- 23:52Speaker 2: have been high up in the sport. A former general
- 23:54Speaker 2: manager said that the monitored manager is actually spread who
- 24:00Speaker 2: thin the quote? They matter a tremendous amount, said another
- 24:05Speaker 2: former GM who now works for a different team. But
- 24:07Speaker 2: I don't know if they matter a tremendous amount in
- 24:09Speaker 2: the way that people think they matter. In the article,
- 24:13Speaker 2: it talks about how managers have less organizational sway. I
- 24:16Speaker 2: think that's pretty obvious. The orgs are way bigger these days,
- 24:19Speaker 2: so your power pendulum is definitely different in terms of
- 24:25Speaker 2: how much more is in the organ also how much
- 24:27Speaker 2: power the front office leader, often the president of baseball
- 24:30Speaker 2: ops contains along with the ownership group. Another former JAM
- 24:35Speaker 2: said players know the difference between a manager who genuinely
- 24:37Speaker 2: understands why the data isn't pointing somewhere and one who's
- 24:40Speaker 2: simply repeating what he was told to say. One of
- 24:44Speaker 2: the former gms told of hiring a then first time
- 24:47Speaker 2: manager who admitted he would need to be taught the
- 24:50Speaker 2: finer points of actual in game management. They hired him
- 24:54Speaker 2: anyway because of his humility and because he possessed the
- 24:56Speaker 2: other traits they believed to find a winning manager. I mean,
- 25:00Speaker 2: in a perfect world, I want all that. That makes
- 25:02Speaker 2: me a little bit uneasy Kratz when I hear somebody say, yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 2: this guy didn't really have the strategic chops, but we'll
- 25:10Speaker 2: figure that out.
- 25:12Speaker 3: The strategic chops that's where the that's like, that's ground level.
- 25:17Speaker 3: You don't have the strategic chops, you're cooked. I Mean
- 25:20Speaker 3: even Phil Nevin said it when he became the bench
- 25:23Speaker 3: coach for Aaron Boone. He's like, I don't know, he's
- 25:25Speaker 3: been off the field for a little while, might not
- 25:27Speaker 3: be able to keep up and Boonie right out of
- 25:30Speaker 3: the gate. Knew what he was doing right right away.
- 25:33Speaker 3: There was no strategic like but that's not like you're
- 25:38Speaker 3: not just this elite strategist as a manager. You have
- 25:42Speaker 3: to start there. You have to have that and that
- 25:44Speaker 3: story about somebody that you know. I don't know, I'm
- 25:49Speaker 3: gonna say that was a team that wasn't winning. I'm
- 25:51Speaker 3: just gonna say, like, I maybe I'm completely wrong, or
- 25:55Speaker 3: maybe that manager is super humble and he actually knew
- 25:58Speaker 3: what was going on. But I'm gonna say that team
- 26:02Speaker 3: put that manager in place. They weren't worried about winning
- 26:05Speaker 3: in that moment.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Here's here's my here's my thoughts on this. The number
- 26:13Speaker 1: one thing is when I first came up, the manager
- 26:15Speaker 1: had all the power. Okay, Tom Kelly, he had all
- 26:18Speaker 1: the power. He had more, way more power than the
- 26:20Speaker 1: GM did. He picked the player. I mean, he didn't
- 26:22Speaker 1: pick the players, but he picked who came up and
- 26:24Speaker 1: who went down, and who pitched and who didn't pitch,
- 26:27Speaker 1: and what their role was. And if you didn't like it,
- 26:29Speaker 1: Tom Kelly, be like, we'll see you in Salt Lake City, baby,
- 26:32Speaker 1: because you ain't around David Ortiz.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 26:34Speaker 1: They didn't love David Ortiz Tom Kelly because he didn't
- 26:37Speaker 1: play first and there was this he didn't hit the
- 26:39Speaker 1: ball the other way, and YadA, YadA, YadA. Couldn't bond,
- 26:42Speaker 1: he couldn't hit and run, he couldn't do all those things.
- 26:43Speaker 1: All Dave Artist could do was hit at homers, right,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and yeah, he's in the Hall of Fame, But that
- 26:48Speaker 1: was different. Now. The manager, to me, is a communication expert.
- 26:52Speaker 1: You have to be able to communicate with every player
- 26:55Speaker 1: and put your players in the best position to succeed.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Understand the analytics and make them understand that, hey, I'm
- 27:01Speaker 1: putting you in their best position with these numbers, and
- 27:04Speaker 1: even if it might not be the best position, you
- 27:07Speaker 1: have to make the player believe that you are putting
- 27:09Speaker 1: them in that position. And that's, to me, is the
- 27:11Speaker 1: new role of a major league manager. You talk to
- 27:14Speaker 1: the front office, you talk to the scouts, you talk
- 27:16Speaker 1: to the front office, you talk to the analytics people,
- 27:18Speaker 1: and then you communicate that to the coaches and to
- 27:21Speaker 1: the players and make everybody feel comfortable. And the in
- 27:23Speaker 1: game decisions, yes, you have to make some in game
- 27:26Speaker 1: decisions here and there, but a lot of that is
- 27:28Speaker 1: discuss pregame, and then you can bench coach and you
- 27:31Speaker 1: and you're pitching coach and you're hitting coach, and everyone
- 27:33Speaker 1: sit down and you say in the middle of the
- 27:35Speaker 1: moment and say, hey, we need a picture up. Who
- 27:38Speaker 1: do we look And they have red and green on
- 27:39Speaker 1: the chart. Oh, we're here in the lineup. Oh this
- 27:42Speaker 1: is red or green? Do we go this guy or
- 27:43Speaker 1: this guy? And then you make the decision. You live
- 27:45Speaker 1: with it. It's not as much scripted as it is pre planned.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And I think for me, a good manager, the managers
- 27:52Speaker 1: that are really good communicate really well with the front office,
- 27:55Speaker 1: communicate really well with the players, communicate really well with
- 27:58Speaker 1: the coaches, communicate really well with the media because you
- 28:02Speaker 1: have to do at least two press conferences a day.
- 28:04Speaker 1: If you can do all of that, then you have
- 28:06Speaker 1: to worry about a game. And I think it's a
- 28:09Speaker 1: hard job. I don't think he gets as much credit
- 28:11Speaker 1: as it deserves. But you know who's gonna say the
- 28:14Speaker 1: managers don't matter, the gms and the front office people
- 28:17Speaker 1: because they don't want to lose.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Their power, and they don't need to pay him as
- 28:21Speaker 3: much money. And I think the confidence in the player
- 28:25Speaker 3: is what ends up winning the game. Charlie Manuel has
- 28:29Speaker 3: x amount of wins in the big leagues as a manager.
- 28:31Speaker 1: He is a World Series champion.
- 28:32Speaker 3: The Guardians Indians manager when they were you know, doing well, hitting, coach,
- 28:37Speaker 3: all that stuff. He goes, I never seen a team
- 28:41Speaker 3: that didn't have good players, that didn't have a good manager.
- 28:44Speaker 3: He's like, there's no there's no such thing as a
- 28:46Speaker 3: good manager on a losing team. The players have to win,
- 28:48Speaker 3: and so the manager now has to make sure he's
- 28:52Speaker 3: able to push all the right buttons. No different than before,
- 28:57Speaker 3: Like we weren't in an analytic gage when Barry bo
- 29:00Speaker 3: was playing for the San Francisco Giants. If you do
- 29:03Speaker 3: not keep Barry Bonds happy, that is way different than
- 29:06Speaker 3: keeping aj Persinski happy. And if you, as a manager
- 29:09Speaker 3: can't keep both of those guys happy and they're both
- 29:12Speaker 3: right in the middle of your order, your team is cooked.
- 29:15Speaker 3: You will not win games. So, yes, it looks different,
- 29:19Speaker 3: but ultimately the bones, the structure of managing is still
- 29:24Speaker 3: the same. You just have I think you have a
- 29:26Speaker 3: lot more noise, and I think some of the older
- 29:29Speaker 3: school managers could be like beat it, Like I don't
- 29:33Speaker 3: want to see any front office up here. I don't
- 29:35Speaker 3: see what's going on now. You say that and they're like, well,
- 29:37Speaker 3: actually i'm your GM, so you might actually want to
- 29:40Speaker 3: listen to me, so you have more noise than you
- 29:43Speaker 3: did before.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Yeah, hierarchy has definitely changed. I'm just going to bring
- 29:48Speaker 2: up a random example because we have so many cases
- 29:51Speaker 2: of new managers this year, and I feel like Tony
- 29:54Speaker 2: Ofvtello kind of steals the show for you know, how
- 29:57Speaker 2: the team's doing, and his quotes and all that, and
- 29:59Speaker 2: just a fascinating case study. But let me tilt us
- 30:01Speaker 2: to a different direction. AJ, what do you think about
- 30:04Speaker 2: Blake Puterra and the Nats? And I know it's also
- 30:06Speaker 2: a new front office, so they're redoing a lot of
- 30:08Speaker 2: things on the fly. But I think almost anyone would
- 30:11Speaker 2: say their first third of this season has been very
- 30:15Speaker 2: impressive and they have exceeded expectations by staying around the
- 30:19Speaker 2: five hundred mark and in an NL wildcard race for
- 30:21Speaker 2: a team that on paper doesn't look like it's ready yet.
- 30:25Speaker 1: No, I think that what the what the Nationals have
- 30:27Speaker 1: done has been impressive. But they've had all these position
- 30:29Speaker 1: players for a long time. They finally got somebody who
- 30:33Speaker 1: could figure out how to get them all to be
- 30:34Speaker 1: on the same page. Right, They got Abrams to be great,
- 30:37Speaker 1: James what is doing his thing, They've got a lot
- 30:40Speaker 1: of these. Cabert Ruiz is having a nice start to
- 30:42Speaker 1: the season. So I think that what they've done is
- 30:44Speaker 1: they made everyone realize what their role was going to be. Elisten,
- 30:47Speaker 1: I ain't gonna poo poo on anybody that was there,
- 30:50Speaker 1: but I mean from things I heard from about Dave Martinez,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I don't know that they were necessarily on the same
- 30:54Speaker 1: page with some of the things that they were doing.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I love David Martinez. I thought he was awesome. Obviously
- 30:59Speaker 1: was was there for a long time, but I just
- 31:02Speaker 1: didn't from what I've heard from people that were in
- 31:04Speaker 1: the organization before, it wasn't necessarily always on the same page.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So now they're on the same page. They have goals
- 31:11Speaker 1: in mind that are going to keep players lined up
- 31:13Speaker 1: and where they need to get to. But they got
- 31:15Speaker 1: to figure out the pitching at some point. I mean,
- 31:18Speaker 1: you can't give up eight and score eight every game
- 31:20Speaker 1: because you're going to lose most of those games. So
- 31:22Speaker 1: it's a tough place to be. But I like the
- 31:24Speaker 1: direction that the Nationals are heading.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Everybody knows Kybri Rui's Ajy just brought him up. I
- 31:31Speaker 3: heard that they had a meeting with him. And he
- 31:34Speaker 3: started out not so great at the beginning of the season.
- 31:37Speaker 3: And that's on top of besides a really fast start
- 31:41Speaker 3: last year, not so great last two seasons.
- 31:44Speaker 4: His words were, I was.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Not a very good player, and I was willing to
- 31:47Speaker 3: have a conversation, and the conversation was a little bit
- 31:52Speaker 3: more less kid gloves and I think he's twenty seven, yes,
- 31:57Speaker 3: twenty seven, almost twenty eight years old, and he made
- 32:01Speaker 3: the decision to essentially swing harder, be more aggressive the
- 32:06Speaker 3: way he knows how to do it and not the
- 32:08Speaker 3: way people were telling him.
- 32:10Speaker 4: How to do it.
- 32:11Speaker 3: This is a guy who has a contract, This is
- 32:14Speaker 3: a guy who has been a new organization. This is
- 32:16Speaker 3: a guy who's lost some playing time at different points
- 32:18Speaker 3: in his career. And somebody on Butterra's staff, whether it's Buttera,
- 32:24Speaker 3: whether it was Tiboni, or it was somebody in between,
- 32:26Speaker 3: a hitting coach or a front office, somebody had approached
- 32:30Speaker 3: him and said told him, as a man, these are
- 32:34Speaker 3: the things that we think you need to do. And
- 32:36Speaker 3: he was at a point where he could listen to it.
- 32:38Speaker 3: He was at a point where he wanted to make
- 32:39Speaker 3: an adjustment himself. So you have to be able to
- 32:42Speaker 3: meet the players where they are, and sometimes you have
- 32:45Speaker 3: to be able to you know, right spot, right time.
- 32:49Speaker 3: And he's turned it into much more success in the
- 32:52Speaker 3: last month and a half, an adjustment that he's made
- 32:56Speaker 3: during the season to try to save his career. And
- 32:58Speaker 3: that's part of what the success of a manager is.
- 33:02Speaker 3: Maybe you can talk to him, maybe you can't. Maybe
- 33:04Speaker 3: you send the hitting coach, maybe he hates the hitting coach,
- 33:06Speaker 3: and you're the one that delivers the message. Whatever it is,
- 33:10Speaker 3: it really doesn't matter. If you take your ego out
- 33:12Speaker 3: of it as a manager, you take your ego out
- 33:15Speaker 3: of it as a coach, and you want what's best
- 33:17Speaker 3: for that player in that moment, you're going to always
- 33:20Speaker 3: have much more success.
- 33:22Speaker 2: What a turnaround for him. By the way, I know
- 33:25Speaker 2: it's the number. Look at his and I know you
- 33:29Speaker 2: got to watch it too, but his blocking and his
- 33:32Speaker 2: framing numbers in the past few years, and then look
- 33:34Speaker 2: at them this year and the ranks and the percentiles.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Right like framing, he's in the eighty third percentile, he's
- 33:40Speaker 2: well up there and blocking like those two categories alone.
- 33:43Speaker 2: If you just watched natschemes over the past few years,
- 33:47Speaker 2: you'd be like, I don't know if this guy is
- 33:50Speaker 2: going to last at the position, and now you're watching
- 33:53Speaker 2: him and it's almost like the way the Brewers had
- 33:55Speaker 2: that magic sauce for a little bit with catchers, where
- 33:58Speaker 2: they all of a sudden, it's like a snap and
- 34:01Speaker 2: a guy who was a below average catcher becomes an
- 34:03Speaker 2: above average catcher in two months time. It wasn't a
- 34:07Speaker 2: snap Land, it was a snap, right, But for a fan,
- 34:11Speaker 2: it's like, wait, this guy comes over. He's bad and
- 34:14Speaker 2: now he's good, like right away. It wouldn't I'm saying,
- 34:16Speaker 2: it wouldn't be like, oh it took years. It would
- 34:18Speaker 2: be like, no, he moves over to the Brewers, they
- 34:20Speaker 2: have spring training with him, and then he's a different catcher.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I know.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Yeah, And I can only speak to that instance what
- 34:27Speaker 3: you're bringing up, because I know the guy who was
- 34:29Speaker 3: making those decisions he's now moved on to He's now
- 34:33Speaker 3: moved on to the White Sox, and they wouldn't just
- 34:36Speaker 3: take the like, eh, okay, he just can't receive well
- 34:39Speaker 3: they would say, okay, well, what pitch is breaking down
- 34:41Speaker 3: each pitch. Omar Nevias came over from the Mariners, had
- 34:46Speaker 3: twenty plus home runs with the Mariners, but brutal was
- 34:49Speaker 3: a boxing match behind the plate, and they said, Okay,
- 34:53Speaker 3: his velocity when he catches pitches that are ninety four
- 34:57Speaker 3: and above, his framing numbers are above average. How can
- 35:00Speaker 3: we work with that? How can we get value out
- 35:03Speaker 3: of it? And it helped Omar and Narvaias' career extend.
- 35:07Speaker 3: I watched Manny Pina work and trust the process. It's
- 35:11Speaker 3: really about giving the guys the right tools, not telling
- 35:15Speaker 3: them the wrong things, and then the player trusting it.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Good stuff, really good ball. Tak today, let's stay here
- 35:22Speaker 2: for a few minutes and chat about Nick Castillanos to
- 35:26Speaker 2: the news just came in. Padres are going to let
- 35:28Speaker 2: him go. He's designated for assignment and then they're picking
- 35:32Speaker 2: up Samad Taylor from Triple A. He's going to get
- 35:34Speaker 2: called up. So we've seen Castianus and McCutcheon over the
- 35:39Speaker 2: last week and a half, guys that have been part
- 35:42Speaker 2: of our game for a while. AJ And you know,
- 35:45Speaker 2: I don't know if guys like this get picked up again.
- 35:49Speaker 1: Yeah, this is what happens, though betteran guys on these teams,
- 35:53Speaker 1: especially if they're not playing very well, they you start
- 35:55Speaker 1: kind of, ah, we had him here for a couple
- 35:57Speaker 1: of months, he didn't do well. We'll give a shout
- 35:59Speaker 1: to a young guy. That's it. This is what happens
- 36:03Speaker 1: when you get to kind of towards the end of
- 36:04Speaker 1: your career, if you're not playing really well, teams want
- 36:07Speaker 1: to move on, especially on a team that's trying to win.
- 36:09Speaker 3: People are gonna say, oh, well, Croud, you said earlier
- 36:12Speaker 3: that you shouldn't call prospects up. Like, no, this is
- 36:15Speaker 3: exactly what this is, exactly what happens. He has to
- 36:17Speaker 3: reestablish himself as some type of value for a team.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Is that as a pinch hitter, Is that as a
- 36:23Speaker 3: guy that can play first base on a team, like
- 36:25Speaker 3: a lot of teams have first baseman. So when your
- 36:28Speaker 3: value isn't versatile, it's hard to say, well, we can
- 36:33Speaker 3: keep around a guy that's hitting one ninety with an
- 36:35Speaker 3: ops plus of like fifty or fifty seven, not fifty six. Like,
- 36:40Speaker 3: doesn't mean Nick Castianis isn't a good player. And I
- 36:42Speaker 3: think I think he latches on with somebody before Cutch
- 36:47Speaker 3: to us, I agree, I think there's value, and that
- 36:53Speaker 3: that value is what I'm talking about. Teams don't necessarily
- 36:57Speaker 3: put a price put enough of a price tag on.
- 37:00Speaker 3: But this dude's gonna get the minimum. He's gonna get
- 37:03Speaker 3: the minimum whoever picks him up, and you'll give him
- 37:06Speaker 3: a shot. You should give him a shot if you're
- 37:08Speaker 3: a team that wants to win and wants to help
- 37:11Speaker 3: other guys on a roster. But is it that the
- 37:13Speaker 3: padres but he got he got that chance. I one
- 37:17Speaker 3: hundred percent agree, one hundred percent agree with you. But
- 37:20Speaker 3: and it's and it's not like twenty nine teams are
- 37:23Speaker 3: gonna go after him. Twenty nine teams don't have an
- 37:25Speaker 3: opening at d H first base, pinch hit role, that
- 37:31Speaker 3: doesn't play a position for versatility. So it has to
- 37:35Speaker 3: be I mean, it's gonna be a small sliver that
- 37:38Speaker 3: he gets to like not choose between, but that are
- 37:41Speaker 3: gonna be coming after him.
- 37:43Speaker 4: To me, he still has valuable at bats in the
- 37:45Speaker 4: big leagues.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you can see those numbers would have to pick up.
- 37:49Speaker 2: He's and I know it's small sample size, but the
- 37:51Speaker 2: s ub two hundred batting average, and yeah, he's come
- 37:53Speaker 2: up in some spots and given them RBIs that they've needed,
- 37:57Speaker 2: but not enough, you know, according to the Padres. And
- 38:00Speaker 2: I'm not trying to stand here and defend him. I mean,
- 38:01Speaker 2: he's at the end of his career, there's no doubt
- 38:03Speaker 2: about that, right, He's going to get picked up on
- 38:05Speaker 2: maybe one other team to have a shot, and if
- 38:07Speaker 2: he doesn't crack it for them, then then that'll probably
- 38:10Speaker 2: be it. And maybe you'll see him on this show,
- 38:12Speaker 2: you know, popping on and telling us about what happened
- 38:15Speaker 2: throughout his career. So yeah, I think the point sometimes
- 38:18Speaker 2: because aj I feel like we catch some flak for him.
- 38:20Speaker 2: It's like he is not an analytical darling in his
- 38:24Speaker 2: game right, the defense, the swings right, he will swing
- 38:28Speaker 2: outside the zone. You get punished for that nowadays they
- 38:32Speaker 2: don't like the way that guys do that. But for me,
- 38:35Speaker 2: I mean, I think he had a really productive career
- 38:37Speaker 2: here and not a big player has to be the same.
- 38:40Speaker 1: No, And he got a lot of big hits in
- 38:42Speaker 1: his career. You know why he got a lot of
- 38:43Speaker 1: big hits because he swung.
- 38:46Speaker 4: He did.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You got a lot of big hits in his screwer. Man,
- 38:49Speaker 1: He's had a great career, and I'm not saying it's
- 38:51Speaker 1: over at all. He has had a great career and
- 38:53Speaker 1: it con continue somewhere else. But he's got a hit.
- 38:55Speaker 1: He's got a hit enough to make his defense and
- 38:58Speaker 1: his lack of versatility be important to a team. And
- 39:02Speaker 1: what team that is, I don't know. I think we
- 39:04Speaker 1: know what team. It won't be. Won't be Philly. So
- 39:07Speaker 1: listen when thinking back up, continue to pay him.
- 39:10Speaker 3: He's still thirty four years old. I mean, you look
- 39:12Speaker 3: at his Baseball reference page. You say, I mean to me,
- 39:15Speaker 3: I would think he still has two good years left
- 39:18Speaker 3: at least, and I could even push it to a
- 39:20Speaker 3: little bit more. But now it's time where it can't be. Well,
- 39:23Speaker 3: you know I used to do this like no, it's
- 39:26Speaker 3: you're getting your job because you used to do X,
- 39:29Speaker 3: Y and Z.
- 39:29Speaker 4: You've got a hundred.
- 39:31Speaker 3: RBIs, one hundred plus RBIs in different seasons, you were
- 39:34Speaker 3: an MVP candidate, Rookie of the Year, Candida, all that stuff.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Now you got to go out and you gotta perform
- 39:39Speaker 3: in the small sample size that you get.
