Latest / Pretty In Pink Again / REWIND: Ozempic, GLP-1s & the Truth About Weight Loss Medications with Stephanie Gort, PA
Transcript
- 0:00I'm Christina and I'm t and this is the Pretty and Pink Again podcast where Motherhood meets rediscovery.
- 0:19Hello, hello.
- 0:20Welcome back.
- 0:21Quick little Pippa life update.
- 0:24This week we have waved the white flag.
- 0:27Between Christina's 40th girls trip, Mother's Day dance, sports, school chaos, May is like May...
- 0:34What do they call it?
- 0:35May December or Mayvember for a reason because it is just such a busy time of year, probably one of the busiest.
- 0:46we decided to take a little break from recording this week.
- 0:49Because honestly, we know that a lot of you are probably feeling the same way, and we didn't wanna leave you all hanging without an episode.
- 0:56Since the new year, our podcast has grown exponentially, We have had so many new listeners join and we thought that this would be the perfect time to re-release one of our most talked about episodes from 2025, our GLP-1 conversation with Steph Gore, who is a PA and one of our very good friends.
- 1:17This conversation is even more relevant now than it was then, and she is going to be coming back on over the summer to talk about some of the new advances in that area, emotional eating.
- 1:29All of the questions that our listeners had for part two will be coming your way, so I figured some of our new listeners that did not tune into that yet, this would be a great opportunity to do so.
- 1:41And can we all just collectively agree to stop saying,"We're just trying to get through this and this season of life"?
- 1:49Because I know May is chaos.
- 1:51It seems just like the holidays.
- 1:53We know that motherhood is a lot, but we also don't wanna just blink and realize that we spent our whole life rushing through it.
- 1:59So we are practicing what we're preaching.
- 2:02We are taking a little pause so we can regroup, enjoy this chaotic time, and then we'll be back next week with a excellent episode.
- 2:11We have a really great guest coming on.
- 2:13We have Reset Brunette she is a home organizer and so much more than that.
- 2:19I am minimizing her title.
- 2:20I'm excited for everybody to come back next week and listen to that.
- 2:26Whether you're listening to this in carpool line or hiding in Target, driving to dance, cleaning your kitchen for the 14th time today, or finally sitting down for five minutes, this one is for you.
- 2:38Happy belated Mother's Day to all of our Pippas.
- 2:41We love you all.
- 2:42We are so grateful that you are here.
- 2:44And enjoy this episode, whether it's for the first time or the second, welcome.
- 2:50Have a good day.
- 2:52Hello.
- 2:53Hello.
- 2:53We have a guest in the house.
- 2:54Yay.
- 2:55Hello.
- 2:56We have our friend Stephanie Gort she's a physician assistant.
- 2:59She works in gastroenterology, ology and weight management.
- 3:03And she's here to break down how the diet culture has shaped us, what difference there is now.
- 3:09She's gonna talk about GLP ones weight loss and the fads now.
- 3:15Yes.
- 3:16So when we were on the phone doing our prep call, we talked about how we grew up in the nineties.
- 3:22Yep.
- 3:22And the height of this diet culture when you would see special K for breakfast and a slim fast and low fat, everything.
- 3:29And you learn two things.
- 3:32One, you're supposed to be smaller.
- 3:34Yep.
- 3:34And that's better.
- 3:36And two, if you're not, it's your fault.
- 3:39Oh yes.
- 3:40So even though I didn't personally grow up like this, because I talked about how my mom was European and we literally ate everything from the house, from the garden, from home.
- 3:51Like my grandmother would kill a rabbit.
- 3:53And that was what was for lunch.
- 3:54But that is not how my children are growing up.
- 3:57My children are very American.
- 3:58They reach for a box.
- 4:00And so now I am so interested in this personally, also, all of the diets that you mentioned.
- 4:07I did.
- 4:08So I went to Weight Watchers when I was 11.
- 4:1211.
- 4:13Wow.
- 4:13And 11 years old.
- 4:14We had all the snack Wells Ling cuisine smart ones.
- 4:18Eat this, not that.
- 4:18Books, like all of that was huge in my household growing up because thinness was such a big thing and I was really overweight as a childness was a big thing.
- 4:27Being thin was like a badge of honor, like an unachievable goal.
- 4:30My mom always told us we were beautiful and we were smart and she would do anything for us.
- 4:35But some message came that when I was 11 I needed to be thinner.
- 4:39And I think part of it was I would go to like field trips when it was hot out and I'd wear like a sweatshirt and shorts instead of a tank top and all the girls wearing jeans, skirts.
- 4:48And my mom would look at me and be like, I know she's uncomfortable so gently, she would bring me to Weight Watchers and we would, you know, do the thing.
- 4:56So I learned about calorie counting.
- 4:59Fat back then that was like the initial fad before low carb and before all this stuff came in.
- 5:04It's crazy'cause we've talked about, on here, Tia and I have talked about when that exact moment is that you realize about body image and it could be external, like you look at other people and start filing things away or like internalizing things.
- 5:21But it also could be when you notice your body.
- 5:24And so do you feel like it was around, I think you had said something around that.
- 5:28It was around that.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:28I was eighth grade for me.
- 5:29Okay.
- 5:30Fifth grade.
- 5:30Yeah, I was in, so I was tiny in my early nursery school ages.
- 5:34And then I gained weight in elementary school.
- 5:36I was pretty overweight.
- 5:38Sixth, seventh, eighth grade, ninth grade comes South Beach.
- 5:41Diet was big then.
- 5:42Yes.
- 5:42So I started the South Beach diet.
- 5:44Everything was low carb and then I lost weight and all of a sudden you have boys noticing you, your clothes are.
- 5:50Fit better.
- 5:51Like all this stuff comes.
- 5:52So then in my mind I'm like, okay, thin is in thin is what we need to keep, and I don't thin is in, I don't.
- 5:57I think that also that messaging from the nineties and early two thousands was so diet focused.
- 6:04And I think that if you said that you wanted to lose weight, it was almost like glamorized at that point.
- 6:10Like you're saying, a thin is in, it's a good thing to be thin.
- 6:14Yes.
- 6:14And now I think the messaging has shifted maybe in the opposite direction where if you had said, if you say out loud, I want to lose weight, you're like immediately inundated with no, you look great.
- 6:25And it's all, so it's the opposite right effect.
- 6:27And I think that both messages are dangerous in their own because obviously you want to feel good about yourself.
- 6:33And so I think that you just need to get to a middle ground where you're tuning out the noise, but then you feel good about your own body image.
- 6:41I think that there has to be like a mix of that to be healthy.
- 6:45I still think thin is in.
- 6:47I don't know, one person that's actually does not want to be a good weight.
- 6:51But I think maybe the messaging, and you can, you're gonna speak to this is more, it's more health based, right?
- 6:56Yes.
- 6:57Yes.
- 6:57So it's less vanity and more health.
- 6:59However, there are people like Lizzo and other clinically obese women that are body positive in that sense.
- 7:07And I don't necessarily agree with that either.
- 7:09There's two extremes.
- 7:10There's the th skinny, skinny, skinny obese, obese, obese.
- 7:13And I feel like you have to find that middle ground.
- 7:16When you were younger Yes.
- 7:17And you, your mom recognized my daughter appears uncomfortable.
- 7:21Yes.
- 7:21I wanna help my daughter.
- 7:23It came more from a vanity maybe standpoint at first.
- 7:26Or do you think it was more health based?
- 7:28I was,'cause Weight Watchers is good, right?
- 7:30'cause Weight Watchers, teaches you how to eat portion control.
- 7:33I gained weight on Weight Watchers, but I think hers came from.
- 7:38I'm seeing her with her peers and going into high school and going into her dating years.
- 7:43I want her confidence better.
- 7:44And I think all of us can say when we're at our thinner weight or when we feel better after we lose the baby weight, after we get to our wedding weight, we feel better.
- 7:54You're more excited to get dressed.
- 7:56You are more excited to go shopping.
- 7:58Being in pictures, you're not hiding your body.
- 8:00So yes, thin is.
- 8:02Cool.
- 8:03But the way we used to do it is not, so we used to starve ourselves.
- 8:07We used to do these crazy fat cleanses and diets like I did the Cabbage Soup diet.
- 8:12I don't know if either of you remember that I've heard.
- 8:13Yes.
- 8:13I feel like all of these, it was like, and I always go back to the magazines and the media and all of these things that were circulating for everybody to look at.
- 8:22And so yes, these fads were taken by storm.
- 8:25And I think now though with social media, I feel like it's, it depends on the algorithm and what you're in.
- 8:31But I bet you if you're in that space, you're inundated with that sort of fad diet.
- 8:36And I'm shocked my algorithm has changed.
- 8:39And I think the only reason everything has changed is when I had a kid.
- 8:43And I remember being like 15 and talking to a mom who was very fit and always active.
- 8:48And I said to her like.
- 8:49Are you obsessed with your weight?
- 8:50Like how, and she was like, I was until I had a daughter.
- 8:53And I was like, I don't believe that.
- 8:55Like after I have kids, I'm still gonna do that.
- 8:57But now I see my kids and I won't say the word fat around them, right?
- 9:01I won't.
- 9:02I'll eat dessert with them.
- 9:03I make sure to try to eat every meal with them so that they're not like, why does mommy only eat salads?
- 9:08So I think having kids really did it forces you to have healthier habits because you want them to, right?
- 9:15Because you feel like you're being watched.
- 9:16Yeah.
- 9:16And arguably what you're modeling for them is probably the best.
- 9:19And now, arguably, probably the best you've ever felt.
- 9:21And look because you're practicing I am on some of these things.
- 9:25A GLP one, but yes.
- 9:26But so we'll also go into that.
- 9:27Yeah.
- 9:27Like now we're coupling okay.
- 9:29So there was diet, there was starvation, there was all these things.
- 9:33Over exercising.
- 9:34Over exercising 100 calorie packs, like all this sort of like negative messaging.
- 9:38Part of it for your patients is, it's not all your fault.
- 9:41You can diet and exercise all you want, but there is another like hormone and metabolic component to this, and now insert science, and now you can actually live this like shopping the perimeter of the grocery store and eating a balanced diet because you can have access to some of these medical weight loss drugs that you are prescribing to your patients.
- 10:02Yes.
- 10:02So I wanna go into that a little bit too.
- 10:04We're gonna get right into it.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06Because I think that's, I think that's important and that's huge right now.
- 10:09So I feel like this is very timely, but it's also very important that people get the correct information about this because we were talking, and this is one of those things where.
- 10:19A lot of people are prescribing these things and maybe and not everybody's expert's not the expert.
- 10:24Yeah.
- 10:25Not everybody's an expert and maybe it's not the best method just because somebody prescribes these things, it's like Botox.
- 10:31It's like just because somebody can actually do it doesn't mean they're the best and that you're gonna look the best and feel the best afterwards.
- 10:37So I think that sometimes when things get too big and you're just, it's almost like you're oversaturated with this information.
- 10:43Yeah.
- 10:44You start.
- 10:45Guess losing curiosity of like how to go about doing it.
- 10:49And so I think that's an important message that we're gonna talk about.
- 10:51Also, I think the drugs got a bad rap early on because again, anybody on social media can have a voice.
- 10:57You are a voice that I want our listeners to hear from, because you are actually an expert in this field.
- 11:01You work for a gastroenterologist, you day in and day out, you prescribe these medical weight loss drugs to your patients.
- 11:09You work with them, they work with nutritionists, they work with dieticians.
- 11:12Like you are the person to talk about this.
- 11:14And also you have a long history in this.
- 11:17It's why you went into it.
- 11:18Yes.
- 11:18So the, these drugs get a bad rap.
- 11:21I feel like when people, people lose weight, you're like, oh, are you on ozempic?
- 11:24Are you on this?
- 11:25And nobody wants to share.
- 11:26I saw someone the other day, it's not all bad.
- 11:28And I was like, you look amazing.
- 11:29How long have you been on Ozempic?
- 11:30And she looked at me like, did you just say that to me?
- 11:32I'm like, okay, Manjaro.
- 11:34Well, This is what I do for a living.
- 11:36Yeah.
- 11:36But it shouldn't be shameful because it shouldn't be shameful.
- 11:39It's not just eat less and exercise more.
- 11:40We learned that, right?
- 11:41You can starve yourself and you can over exercise and you may lose 12 pounds in a week.
- 11:47The next time you have a regular meal, you're gonna gain it back.
- 11:50So these medications are allowing people not to.
- 11:53Focus on counting calories and starving themselves, and like it's the first time in a lot of these people's lives that they're allowed to enjoy Right.
- 12:01Pasta and not worry about gaining weight.
- 12:04It's probably also removing some of the guilt and the emotional aspect of that.
- 12:08Yes.
- 12:09Like I feel like if you're just, if there's a little bit more flexibility, just taking that stress and that emotion out of it, I'm sure helps a ton too.
- 12:16Yes.
- 12:16So a patient comes to you Yes.
- 12:18And says, all right, I'm unhappy with my weight, or I'm going through menopause and I've gained like 15 pounds.
- 12:26Where do we start?
- 12:27So oftentimes patients are referred from their primary doctors or other GI doctors because of fatty liver disease, because of diabetes, because of high cholesterol, high blood pressure.
- 12:39So what we do at our first intake is we'll say, okay, tell me your story.
- 12:43I tell them a little bit of my story just so they're not like you.
- 12:46Have a normal BMI you're finish like what do you know?
- 12:49So I try to disarm them and we talk about that.
- 12:51I'll say, what's the highest weight you've ever been?
- 12:53What's the lowest weight you've ever been and what's the goal?
- 12:55Weight?
- 12:56And automatically, if their goal weight is much lower than the lowest weight they've ever been, I wanna be like, okay, let's stop there.
- 13:02I don't know if we're gonna get there, but we can go lower than you are now.
- 13:08And I don't love BMI because it doesn't take into account muscle mass.
- 13:12Arnold Schwarzenegger has the same BMI as some big fat guy and they both have different, right.
- 13:18And they both have different body types.
- 13:19So they'll come in.
- 13:20A lot of the stories are, I was thin growing up.
- 13:23I started the Depo-Provera shot and I gained so much weight.
- 13:27What's that?
- 13:28It's like a birth control.
- 13:29Oh, I started birth control.
- 13:30Okay.
- 13:30Okay.
- 13:30For some people have chronic conditions that they need to be on.
- 13:33Steroids and steroids are crazy.
- 13:35Weight, gaining meds, depression, crazy weight, gaining meds.
- 13:38So for a lot of times these people were dieting and exercising, and their bodies were working against them because even though they were doing everything right that we've been told, they're not losing weight.
- 13:48And we now know it's a combination of hormones, metabolism, genetics, psychology, environmental factors, social factors, like so much.
- 13:57So that's, it's not one size fits all.
- 13:58It's not, no.
- 13:59And that's why these medications are a game changer because they're new, but we're learning all these new indications for it.
- 14:07So came out as a diabetic med.
- 14:09Everyone who had diabetes was taking this medication.
- 14:13When it was prescribed to them, their blood sugars were going down, but they also saw they were losing weight.
- 14:18So now people are looking from the outside and they're like I want that.
- 14:21And that's when people started using diabetic medications for weight loss.
- 14:25And that's where all the uproar came because the shortages, people were taking it away from people who really need it.
- 14:30And then, which is no longer the case, which is no longer the case because the companies who created those diabetic medications were brilliant and changed the name Remarketed.
- 14:40It changed the dosing, and now they're FDA approved for weight loss and obesity.
- 14:45So there's no competition between them anymore.
- 14:47It's So this is this, even though they're similar or the same Yep.
- 14:51They're one is branded this way.
- 14:53Yes.
- 14:53And the other one can still be for, so Ozempic is the first one everyone got it Thinks about Ozempic is a diabetes medication.
- 14:59You cannot get it covered unless you have diabetes.
- 15:03The the weight loss medications that you can ask your doctor about are Zep bound and wegovy and do they work the same or are they different?
- 15:10So Zep bound is the exact same as Moon Jro.
- 15:13Wegovy is the exact same as Ozempic.
- 15:15However, they are different indications, so insurance looks at them differently.
- 15:20Can you walk us through what those differences are for like, those are the two big players right now.
- 15:24Yes.
- 15:24So can you walk us through what those, like, how they would affect your body?
- 15:27Yeah.
- 15:28So GLP ones are a hormone in your body that regulate hunger.
- 15:32They also work as a neurotransmitter in the brain to regulate like food noise and cravings.
- 15:37You might have heard that food noise a lot of people are talking about for sure.
- 15:40So it works by, yeah.
- 15:41Bethany Frankel, I feel like coined that turn term.
- 15:43Yes.
- 15:44And Oprah had a whole special on it.
- 15:46And Okay.
- 15:47So if you guys have never been overweight, you may not know that food can control your mind.
- 15:53You're like thinking all day like, oh, I'm not gonna eat today'cause I wanna have ice cream tonight.
- 15:56Or.
- 15:57Ooh, what do you think the next snack I can have is?
- 15:59Or, what am I, what are they gonna have at the baseball game for food?
- 16:02Sometimes food controls a lot of people's thoughts and that it controls my thoughts in a different way.
- 16:06Me too.
- 16:07Because if I don't eat, I feel like I get hangry.
- 16:10Yes.
- 16:11And I'm like, oh my God, if I don't eat my blood sugar's gonna drop and I'm gonna be angry.
- 16:15And these help with the blood sugar too, these meds.
- 16:17So mine, mine food, and I feel like you're similar.
- 16:19Mine is similar to that, but mine is probably the opposite, which I know might come across controversial, but mine is when I am stressed out or when I'm not in a great place, I actually have the opposite, right.
- 16:32Where I don't have any, I, it's like there's no sound.
- 16:35Yes.
- 16:36And I have to force myself to think about eating.
- 16:39And so that I, that has gotten me into a lot of trouble the opposite way.
- 16:43Yes.
- 16:43Because if I am stressed out, I don't eat right.
- 16:47And some people say, I wish that was my response, because other people I've heard that.
- 16:51Of course.
- 16:52Yep.
- 16:52And but, so I can understand it from that perspective of, okay, it's just the opposite.
- 16:56Like you're thi overthinking versus not thinking.
- 16:59It also works directly to regulate hunger.
- 17:02So food leaves your stomach slower.
- 17:04Okay.
- 17:04You get fuller quicker and so therefore you end up eating less at the meal and you end up having longer periods before you get hungry again.
- 17:13So it is like a physical and mental Yes.
- 17:16Physical also.
- 17:16Yes.
- 17:17Exactly.
- 17:17Okay.
- 17:18Yes.
- 17:18So it works both ways.
- 17:19Okay.
- 17:19And it's dose dependent.
- 17:21So you start at a low dose and then we increase it up.
- 17:24The side effects are not always so beautiful, people don't talk about it, but nausea, queasiness, morning sickness.
- 17:31Is one extreme.
- 17:32The other extreme is vomiting.
- 17:33Like some people vomit all day, other people have diarrhea.
- 17:36And how long does that last for?
- 17:37Like your entire time, your body gets use of the dose and we don't increase their dose until they're like comfortable at the dose.
- 17:44Wow, okay.
- 17:45Yeah.
- 17:45So you know that they're effective, you know that it works.
- 17:48Yes.
- 17:48So now your patient's on it for three to six months and they, you're seeing weight loss.
- 17:52What do you, how do you maintain that?
- 17:55So a lot of people come in and they're like, I wanna lose this 15 pounds.
- 17:57And then once it's off, I promise I'll be able to keep it off.
- 17:59I just need to get this 15 pounds off.
- 18:01Because it's also to jumpstart.
- 18:02It's not just the 15 pounds, it's now their cholesterol has gone down.
- 18:05Yes.
- 18:05Now they're at a less of a risk of stroke and heart attack.
- 18:08Exactly.
- 18:09And maybe their diabetes is maybe under control.
- 18:11So like it's not just the weight.
- 18:13Yes, it is about the weight loss, but it also, like they have all these other health benefits.
- 18:16So those are the non-scale victories that we also talk about a lot, but.
- 18:21The first thing before we start is I say, this is a chronic medication.
- 18:25You are gonna have to be on this long term in order to continue to see the weight loss and maintain your weight.
- 18:32And I have tons of people who are like, no, I know myself.
- 18:34I know my body.
- 18:35I'm like, okay, this is what the studies are showing.
- 18:37And I use the example like when you have high blood pressure and your blood pressure medication has your blood pressure normalized, and now you're 120 over 80.
- 18:46Perfect.
- 18:47You don't come off the blood pressure medication.
- 18:48Yeah.
- 18:49You stay on it to maintain that healthy blood pressure.
- 18:51So there's nothing there that can, that you can take away from it and then be able to do on your own.
- 18:56I know.
- 18:57'cause I've heard that like people, it's, they're using it, or at least they're saying it as this is my goal.
- 19:02I'm gonna start it.
- 19:03It's gonna jumpstart me and then I'll be able to take over.
- 19:05Does that work in any instance?
- 19:07Or is it really just for It's just something like you're saying it's chronic, like you're gonna be honest.
- 19:12Once you take it, if you like the results, that's it.
- 19:14Yeah.
- 19:15So research is so new because they're newer medications.
- 19:19So different doctors or providers are doing different things.
- 19:21Yeah.
- 19:22So when my patient reaches their goal, I'll start by decreasing the dose back towards starting.
- 19:26And we stop when we start seeing weight gain.
- 19:28Or we spread out the interval.
- 19:31Instead of taking it every seven days, we'll do it every 10 days.
- 19:33Okay.
- 19:33And so none of us know right now what is gonna work, but it's patient by patient, so some people can get away with the lowest starting dose once a month and maintain their weight.
- 19:45Is it so new that we haven't seen any success getting off of it where people are able to keep the weight off?
- 19:51It's so new that the research study shows that you will gain the weight back if you come off of it.
- 19:56Interesting.
- 19:56Okay.
- 19:56Okay.
- 19:57So you're still currently playing around with dosing with myself and timing even with yourself.
- 20:01Yes.
- 20:01So now you are not an overweight or an obese person.
- 20:04And so now, but you were, when you started and I was postpartum.
- 20:08And you were postpartum.
- 20:10So postpartum, I had gained a hundred pounds in pregnancy, and this is from someone who studied nutrition and exercises, gained a hundred pounds.
- 20:18My body wanted to gain weight.
- 20:19We did it.
- 20:20I was left with a newborn and a body, which I didn't feel comfortable in or recognize.
- 20:26Luckily they were winter babies, so I could wear sweatpants.
- 20:29But you have two.
- 20:30I know, but still you have two girls, two little that.
- 20:31What did you gain the weight for with both of the pregnancies?
- 20:33Oh yeah.
- 20:33I went up and then down and then back up and then down.
- 20:35And then you're left with all the skin.
- 20:37Yep.
- 20:37So I started it even before that, I played around with weight loss medications in New York when I lived in New York City and worked at a weight management center there because I was like, I eat well, I exercise well.
- 20:52I have a family history of diabetes.
- 20:54If I look at cake, I gain weight like something else is going on.
- 20:57And so that's when my doctor introduced me to these medications.
- 21:01Was that in between pregnancies or was that before?
- 21:02Before, that was before I got married.
- 21:04Oh, okay.
- 21:04Yeah.
- 21:04Okay.
- 21:05So these weight loss drugs have been around then for a while?
- 21:07This, so I've been prescribing them since 2018.
- 21:10And weight loss meds have been around since the 1970s.
- 21:13Like phentermine, fen.
- 21:15Mm-hmm.
- 21:15More stimulant type have been around.
- 21:17But these GLP ones are newer to the market.
- 21:20Okay.
- 21:21So you started using GLP ones and it was insane, the change Pro, when did you start using them?
- 21:28Probably 2018.
- 21:292019.
- 21:29Wow.
- 21:29So this was before babies, this before babies before marriage.
- 21:34And I used to be the friend who could go out to Mexican with you guys and eat my plate and then eat your plate in your plate.
- 21:40But I was going to Barry's bootcamp at the time so my weight would stay the same when I took this medication and I didn't even finish my own plate.
- 21:47I was like.
- 21:48Game changer.
- 21:48Like I've never felt this before.
- 21:50I've never experienced this before.
- 21:52And it's just so eye-opening for people who suffered for so long and that's why it's changing the environment.
- 22:02So do you have girls come in, or I should say men too, that are not obese, but just wanna control their weight?
- 22:10So insurance is the tricky thing because these medications are approved for weight loss.
- 22:15If you are overweight and have a comorbidity, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or if you're obese, and that's through BMI and other parameters.
- 22:23So if a normal weight woman comes in and she wants to lose weight, I would not offer this medication.
- 22:32If a normal weight man who is training for a marathon and just wants to shred 10 pounds, this isn't the right medication.
- 22:39And so that's why we have a consult first.
- 22:42And that's also why these compounding medications are dangerous.
- 22:44'cause you can subscribe.
- 22:46To a website and get the medication without a full medical history without doing all the blood work.
- 22:51So that's where you have to figure out the right person, because you are an expert, and I don't like this, I'm, I don't know, I don't like how I'm going to say this, but I don't know how it, how else to say it, but people are coming to you and getting it prescribed the right way, because they need it.
- 23:07Medically, how is this so rampant then?
- 23:11Like, how is this all over the place?
- 23:12Like how, why is everybody that I know on this medication, like, where is it coming from otherwise then?
- 23:18So it's a huge money maker, right?
- 23:19So people took these brand name medications, scientists compounded them and reformulated them into compounded vials.
- 23:29And all these medical spas are.
- 23:31Prescribing or cell or injection, how are they access to these?
- 23:33Like, how is this happening?
- 23:35Because the patients just have to know it's not an f FDA approved source.
- 23:39So similar.
- 23:39So this is something that somebody really could get their hands on if they're like a med spa, if they're in that absolutely.
- 23:44Field, like they can.
- 23:45So other people can get their hands on this and they may very well work.
- 23:48And I tell my patients, listen, if insurance isn't gonna cover it, go to a reputable place that, other people have had success with.
- 23:55I wouldn't buy it off the black market, I wouldn't buy it online.
- 23:58But if you have people with success, ask'em their success rate, look at the research, make sure they tell you the side effects, the warnings, the contraindications, but then how are these people who are giving this?
- 24:08And this is not to shade any of those people, but how are they monitoring this in a safe way?
- 24:15So I'm not sure how often they they see these patients, right?
- 24:18I like to see my patients once every three months in person and then we speak once a month.
- 24:23So I'm guessing the check-ins are they weigh-ins?
- 24:26Are you doing blood work or so what kinds of things are you doing?
- 24:29When they start with me, we'll do blood work.
- 24:31We'll look at cholesterol, we'll look at blood sugar, thyroid, insulin resistance, which is a big one with women who are like postmenopausal or on certain medications and like blood counts, metabolic panel.
- 24:42I do it all just so we have a baseline.
- 24:44And then studies have shown that after you lose 10% of your body weight, so if you're 150 pound woman, 15 pounds, you're gonna start seeing these health benefits.
- 24:53So after about six months or so, I'll reorder these panels and see what's happening.
- 24:58If at any point the patient feels stomach pain, if the patient feels like intense constipation, you need to have a red flag because there are these warnings of gastric paralysis and all these lawsuits coming out.
- 25:10Now, if you're with a prescribing provider that knows these risks and follows you closely, none of.
- 25:17Should occur.
- 25:18So that, I think that's, I guess that from the outside,'cause I have not taken these so I didn't know how people go about finding that.
- 25:25I think that's a red flag and if you're thinking about taking something like that, I think it's great.
- 25:31But I think that, how do you go about getting this done correctly?
- 25:34So if you are somebody who just wants to quote unquote jumpstart your weight loss, or maybe you're not in that medical need of this medication, how can someone go about finding this safely?
- 25:46So I'd say everyone, the first person you can start with is your primary care provider.
- 25:51Okay.
- 25:51And they all should know this, everyone in the world knows this right now, but it also shows how desperate people are to lose weight that they would take as something that isn't safe for their body.
- 25:59Just to lose weight.
- 26:00And I think that now that this is becoming more of a thing where it is socially acceptable and everybody is talking about it.
- 26:06I think it's more so than it was maybe a year ago or two years ago.
- 26:10I think now people are.
- 26:12It's a little bit more known.
- 26:13Mm-hmm.
- 26:13And it's a little, maybe a little less shameful saying that you are right.
- 26:16Talking about it.
- 26:17But then that gets dangerous because then you just think oh, I know somebody who offers this.
- 26:21And you go to that person.
- 26:23Yes.
- 26:23Maybe without a referral or without knowing, you know that Yes.
- 26:27That it went well for some other people.
- 26:28And it starts to get a little scary that way.
- 26:30If everyone's offering it, there are risks associated with it.
- 26:35Yes.
- 26:35And maybe the dosing isn't correct.
- 26:38Some people get started on the highest dose.
- 26:39Right.
- 26:40And land in the ER with vomiting.
- 26:42So I think my question is, from an expert, I would wanna know what are the questions that you could ask?
- 26:49How could somebody go about asking for this in a safe way?
- 26:52'cause I think you don't wanna scare people off and say, that something bad is gonna happen.
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:57But people need to be responsible using this.
- 26:59Right.
- 26:59I almost feel like kids and you're the parent and like you have to be like.
- 27:04A parent that's still firm and strict, but knows, okay, my kids are gonna drink.
- 27:09Yes.
- 27:09And they're 16.
- 27:10Yes.
- 27:11You know those access out there are looking for booze.
- 27:13Where do you start?
- 27:14So I'll share with you my, one of my good friends owns a med spa and she knows like I'm always hangry.
- 27:20And she was like, I feel like if you try the microdosing, it'll help with your hunger and you'll lose a few pounds.
- 27:26Let's try this.
- 27:27And I trust her.
- 27:28This is what she does.
- 27:29So I've tried it from her.
- 27:30And it does, it works.
- 27:31So I told you I tried it back in January.
- 27:33You had a good experience and I had a great experience with it.
- 27:35And that's a safe success for us.
- 27:36And I want it, and I wanna do it again.
- 27:38Yes.
- 27:38It's amazing.
- 27:39It's amazing because it does, it quiets the noise.
- 27:42And not necessarily, I'm not somebody that's oh my God, I can't eat a cheeseburger.
- 27:45I can't eat this.
- 27:46I don't have that kind of noise when I go to a football game or a baseball game.
- 27:49Yeah.
- 27:49It actually allows you to eat the cheeseburger.
- 27:50Mine is just more oh my God, my blood sugar shouldn't drop.
- 27:53I'm gonna be hungry more.
- 27:54I have to have purse snacks all the time.
- 27:56Maybe that's more anxiety than it really is like actual blood sugar.
- 28:01Yeah.
- 28:01But it helps with that.
- 28:03It does because it almost makes it go away.
- 28:05Christina's seen me, how many times do I need to have food with?
- 28:08Yeah, she really does.
- 28:09While we're recording, she really does.
- 28:10It's and it happens fast, anxious, hang, it comes on fast.
- 28:12Yeah.
- 28:12So the medication, because it's slowing down the rate foods leaving your stomach, your blood sugar spikes are not happening.
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:18So it's steadying out your blood sugar.
- 28:20So that's why people feel so much better on it.
- 28:21You probably just feel like you're just in people a good spot all the time.
- 28:24So I don't, I can understand.
- 28:25I don't wanna like completely scare people away.
- 28:28No.
- 28:28Like my husband went to, his primary care physician for a check-in.
- 28:33And he was like.
- 28:34His cholesterol was a little high, his blood pressure was a little high.
- 28:37Like all of these indications were like a little high.
- 28:40So he asked his doctor about these drugs and she was like, hard stop.
- 28:43Absolutely not.
- 28:44No.
- 28:45And I was like, I don't feel like she should have just given you a hard no.
- 28:49I think she's afraid of them too.
- 28:50But I think that gets scary.
- 28:52And then that's when people go and they start looking for who can prescribe it.
- 28:56Yeah.
- 28:56There's online and there's the black market, and you're just desperate for these medications.
- 29:01And so that's where people can get into a lot of trouble.
- 29:03We don't know.
- 29:04I hate being like this, but now I feel like I'm an anxious person and a mom now.
- 29:08And so I feel like I'm always just like 10 steps ahead being what is gonna happen.
- 29:13Yeah.
- 29:14It's fun times in my brain, but I feel like it's one of those things where now it's gonna be.
- 29:19All over the place.
- 29:20And are people gonna mix it with something just to sell it for cheaper, to give it to, oh God, like that this is the road that this could go down.
- 29:28If this, it turns into buyer beware.
- 29:30Yes, it is a medication, yes, it is a drug just like opioid.
- 29:33Just like other dangerous things.
- 29:34Yes.
- 29:34And that, I think that's where my mind is going of okay, sometimes when things are too accessible then you're just not really thinking of like, where can I get this safely and where can I verify this and make sure, because now it's just all over the place and you're almost saturated in the thinking where you're like, some lawsuits are starting Yes.
- 29:52Against med spas against non FDA approved compounds, and you're finding them less and less.
- 29:58So hopefully it's gonna be more regulated, but it's also gonna be easier for the general population to get them correctly because of all the new indications.
- 30:05That would be great.
- 30:06Got it.
- 30:06I feel like that's like a positive thing, so you can only get it.
- 30:09Prescribed.
- 30:10If you have an indication, even if you had a pocket, like I couldn't come to you and say, I wanna go on a microdose of this.
- 30:17And I wanted to ask you what that meant.
- 30:19Yeah.
- 30:19Because it will help me regulate my blood sugar.
- 30:22So I would say that some providers will prescribe it.
- 30:31I've had patients come to me who have diarrhea all the time, and I'm in gi so I see diarrhea all the time.
- 30:36This medication slows down your GI tract.
- 30:38So naturally diarrhea might slow down.
- 30:41She's normal weight, but she wants to try this right now.
- 30:45It might be behind the scenes being researched for diarrhea, who knows?
- 30:49But it's not an FDA indication.
- 30:50So I What would you like look into first?
- 30:52Why do you have diarrhea?
- 30:53Yeah, so she would've had the colonoscopy, she would've had the stool studies.
- 30:56You're in gi so that makes her, that's Sal bowel syndrome with diarrhea.
- 31:00Same with PCOS infertility.
- 31:02A lot of these fertility centers are using the medications now to boost fertility.
- 31:07Interesting.
- 31:07The new indications, fatty liver disease, which pretty much everyone has, there's chronic kidney disease.
- 31:12So as it gets more and more widely distributed, the insurance companies have to catch up.
- 31:19And that's where our biggest, I always say the worst side effects is insurance.
- 31:23So maybe it'll be safer.
- 31:24Versus what the more accessible is more.
- 31:26In your opinion, who would be great candidates for this versus who would not be great candidates for this?
- 31:34So automatically there's black box warnings or contraindications.
- 31:38You cannot take this if you have a personal history of pancreatitis.
- 31:42Which is inflammation of your pancreas.
- 31:44Or if you have a family history of medullary thyroid cancer.
- 31:47Okay.
- 31:48Automatically cannot take it and don't say, when you say family history, is that like mother, father, mother, father?
- 31:53What does family history consist of?
- 31:54Grandmother, grandfather, like not my dad's sister's cousin's friend, but Okay.
- 31:59Family history.
- 32:00Okay.
- 32:00And if medullary a specific type of thyroid cancer is in your family history, your prescriber shouldn't even look at it.
- 32:07What if you don't know?
- 32:08So then you have to assume the risk and your provider has to document.
- 32:13Patient doesn't know.
- 32:14And why?
- 32:14Why medullary specific?
- 32:16'cause in research in mice specifically, they did see the thyroid receptor is associated with the GLP one.
- 32:23And in mice they saw that specific type of cell, I believe, grow.
- 32:27I don't quote me on this, but that type of cell was isolated is medullary thyroid cancer?
- 32:33Rare.
- 32:33An aggressive type.
- 32:34It's rare.
- 32:35It's a rare type.
- 32:35So you see like papillary and that's more common.
- 32:38People say I have hypothyroidism.
- 32:39Can I take it?
- 32:40Yes, you can take it.
- 32:41Okay.
- 32:41Hyperthyroidism.
- 32:42My mom has hypothyroidism.
- 32:44Thyroid issues aren't the problem.
- 32:45It's specifically medullary thyroid cancer.
- 32:47Okay.
- 32:48So I guess how important is it that a screening is done before you're on something like this?
- 32:54Extremely important.
- 32:55Okay.
- 32:55So you order like an ultrasound of people's thyroids.
- 32:58So if people, when I see them, if I do a physical exam and they have an enlarged thyroid, I might I check their thyroid level when I start with everyone.
- 33:07Another big one is lipase.
- 33:09So the pancreas is a big thing.
- 33:10So pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas.
- 33:13It can happen with people who drink alcohol.
- 33:15It can happen when you have your gallbladder removed.
- 33:17It can happen from certain medications.
- 33:20These medications have shown that it may cause pancreatitis.
- 33:23Okay.
- 33:23So if so, if you're predisposed to that.
- 33:25So if you've had it in the past, you shouldn't be on it.
- 33:29The way we could see it is patients call, they have significant stomach pain.
- 33:34If you're on a GLP one, your doctor needs to order a lipase to make sure that you don't have pancreatitis.
- 33:39Okay.
- 33:40When you discontinue the med, the pancreatitis goes away, but you cannot continue it and you can never go on it again.
- 33:45How does pancreatitis go away?
- 33:48So we use IV fluids, we use pain medications, but it's really discontinuing the offending agent, which in this case would be the GLP one and GLP one stay in your system for how long?
- 33:58So the dosing is once a week, so you'd have to think the half-life is at least several days.
- 34:04Okay.
- 34:05So if you've taken it in like May, and then you've having stomach pain in October or November later on that year?
- 34:12No, it's not related.
- 34:13No.
- 34:14But I still would never give it to you again, but never to, yeah.
- 34:17Wow.
- 34:18Okay.
- 34:18So that's if interesting, that's people that should not take this medication.
- 34:22And I, that's not, I guess my follow up.
- 34:24Yeah, that's a not a great candidate.
- 34:25What would you recommend as far as if I'm, I keep going back to the same question, but if you're, if they don't qualify to have somebody like you prescribe this for them.
- 34:35There's other medications that they can prescribe to them, right?
- 34:38So if they come in and they have the need to lose weight, they've tried diet, they've tried exercise, there are other FDA approved weight loss medications.
- 34:46But just that aren't in this category.
- 34:47That aren't in this category.
- 34:48Okay.
- 34:48And they don't work the same way, but people want, they want these medications.
- 34:52They come and asking specifically.
- 34:53Yes.
- 34:53They come in asking specifically.
- 34:54And so when there's a will, there's a way.
- 34:56And so would you recommend then maybe starting with your primary and getting a full kind of panel done and a baseline maybe to see if there is anything that could be missed before you start?
- 35:07Because if you go to a med spa Uhhuh, I guarantee you they're not sitting there and probably running your life.
- 35:13Like to prescribe you these medications.
- 35:16So I would first ask your doctor, do you feel comfortable talking about weight loss medications?
- 35:19Some of doctors don't want anything to do with it, or they don't believe in them or they all that.
- 35:25Then I would say, is there a medical weight management provider nearby that you can refer me to?
- 35:30Okay.
- 35:30And in our area we do have a few.
- 35:31I.
- 35:32Today's episode is brought to you by Ellen Piccolo, founder of The Connecticut Homemaker.
- 35:37Ellen doesn't just design beautiful spaces.
- 35:39She creates homes that actually function for real life.
- 35:42Think mud rooms that can handle the chaos, kitchens that flow with your day, and systems that make everything feel just a little bit easier.
- 35:49It is not about perfection.
- 35:50It is about creating a space that supports you in every season of your life.
- 35:54From toddlers to busy teens, busy mornings to slow nights, your home should evolve with you.
- 35:58Home should feel like a place where you walk in and exhale, but for so many of us, it becomes a space where we're constantly trying to keep up with instead of one that supports us.
- 36:09That's where Ellen Piccolo comes in.
- 36:10As the founder of The Homemaker, Ellen approaches design differently, blending elevated aesthetics with thoughtful, intentional function.
- 36:18Every space is considered, every detail has purpose.
- 36:21From refined livable kitchens to beautiful integrated storage that disappears into the design, she creates homes that feel effortless as they are functional, because true luxury isn't just how a home looks, it's how it is lived in.
- 36:35You can find Ellen Piccolo at The Homemaker on Instagram and tell her Pretty in Pink Again sent you.
- 36:41Then once they get to the medical weight management provider, that's where the specialty comes in.
- 36:46Okay.
- 36:46Okay.
- 36:46So that would be like a good, that would be like the order that you would probably referred to.
- 36:50Yes.
- 36:50Feel comfortable doing that?
- 36:52Yeah.
- 36:52Okay.
- 36:52And then can you talk about people that would be great candidates for this maybe from your perspective?
- 36:58Yes.
- 36:58My favorite candidates are postmenopausal women.
- 37:02Patients who have gained weight from starting a medication like I mentioned before.
- 37:07Patients who eat well, exercise, but still can't get to a healthy body weight.
- 37:14The thing is they have to try themselves because it's in adjunct with weight management diet, exercise.
- 37:21So if I have a patient coming and they're sitting in front of me eating McDonald's, but losing weight on the scale, I'm not gonna continue prescribing you this because.
- 37:27You're not changing your, it's the lifestyle change that you're after.
- 37:30So that still means something.
- 37:31Okay.
- 37:32These patients remind you a little bit of yourself too because you were somebody who did work out, who did eat well.
- 37:38Yes.
- 37:39You had these tools and you still struggled And one of the weirdest thing is I find myself, when I talk to these patients, I get tears in my eyes sometimes because it's still like that personal.
- 37:48Yeah.
- 37:48Oh wow.
- 37:49That happened to me.
- 37:50Do you wanna talk about that a little bit?
- 37:52My weight?
- 37:52Yeah.
- 37:52Just about your journey and I guess how this ties into you because I think that's always very powerful when you have somebody who's somebody that you can talk to about these things.
- 38:02Just in addition to a medical professional.
- 38:04It's like nice when you have a full rounded somebody who just understands and can lend an ear and explain maybe they've been on the side of this.
- 38:12It's almost like a therapist in conjunction with Yeah.
- 38:15So if I have a patient that I can tell is skeptical of me.
- 38:18I will automatically be like, listen, this is a no judgmental zone.
- 38:22Like I had french fries dipped in a milkshake last night.
- 38:24Like I get their guard down.
- 38:26I let them know I'm human.
- 38:27I say I was overweight my entire childhood growing up.
- 38:30I show them a picture of myself.
- 38:32I tell them I get it, and I'll, try to just disarm them because a lot of people wear their weight as like a shield and it's their defense mechanism.
- 38:40And so first, if we can dismantle that,.
- 38:43So my history I mentioned a little bit is I just was overweight as a child.
- 38:48Did all the fad diets, got to a healthier weight, but was never thin by any means.
- 38:52I was always a little bit bigger than all of my friends.
- 38:54I was never comfortable in a bathing suit.
- 38:56I was never the girl at the like college parties wearing a bra, type of thing.
- 39:02And then I always wanted to be that girl.
- 39:04I feel like you were that girl.
- 39:05I feel like you are that girl.
- 39:08Like in my mind you are that girl.
- 39:10I mean I might've been that girl.
- 39:11Yeah.
- 39:12And then I met Nick and he was like, can you maybe not be that girl anymore?
- 39:15Can you get down off the bar?
- 39:16Can you?
- 39:17Yeah.
- 39:17Not so I never had that.
- 39:18Can you not be that girl?
- 39:19Because that girl's really annoying.
- 39:21Yeah.
- 39:22And so now I wear all these like crop tops and stuff.
- 39:24I never had that growing up.
- 39:25I feel like.
- 39:27I love that for you though.
- 39:27Thank you feel.
- 39:27I love that.
- 39:27Thank you.
- 39:28It's really fun getting dressed when you are comfortable with how you look.
- 39:31I love that you share it and you're not ashamed of it.
- 39:33You're like, I wanted to make a change, so I did.
- 39:36Yeah.
- 39:36Also I've.
- 39:38Non-disclosure.
- 39:38I've had a tummy tuck, I had those two children and I had my stomach stretched out, and I think I saw you at Bar and you were like, you look amazing.
- 39:45And I was like, I like threw down my pants.
- 39:47And I was like, look at my scar.
- 39:48Like I just got this done.
- 39:49The trans parent is amazing because I think that's important.
- 39:51Same with parenting.
- 39:52If you're pretending like everything's butterflies and rainbows, it's not the truth.
- 39:57And, but you can't connect with anybody like that.
- 39:59No.
- 40:00And I think as soon as I, you're just gonna push people away.
- 40:03Yes.
- 40:04You can be in your new crop top, but you're gonna be all by yourself.
- 40:06You're like unapproachable.
- 40:07It's not interesting.
- 40:08And not that I want you to have to gain a hundred pounds and have to have a tummy tuck to have a conversation with you, but you looked amazing that day.
- 40:15Yeah.
- 40:16And I wanted to be like, damn girl, you look good.
- 40:18And I wish I could say thanks.
- 40:19It's from exercise and eating less, but that's not the reality anymore.
- 40:22It's always, yeah.
- 40:23Appreciated if people are transparent with things, I we talk about you don't always have to share, like we've said that on this podcast.
- 40:31It's a fine line of it's nice when you can share but you don't have to share and over overshare.
- 40:35I don't have a little oversharing issues.
- 40:37We do too on here.
- 40:38You're sitting in our podcast room.
- 40:40We clearly have a lot to say.
- 40:42I think it's, I think it's a good thing for the future.
- 40:44Yeah.
- 40:44So that helped shape you to go into this field, obviously.
- 40:46So then I started college and I was still in the phase of dieting and I was like, I'm gonna be a nutrition major and I'm gonna learn the trick to being thin.
- 40:56So I started my nutrition major and I started really liking the medical side of it and learning about the disease states.
- 41:02And so I went that route and my mom always said to me like, you're gonna be on TV one day talking about losing weight and helping people lose weight.
- 41:10And I was just like, medical weight loss wasn't a thing then.
- 41:13There was no medical weight loss.
- 41:15And so being able to do this now is really nice.
- 41:17It I feel like it's such a good fit and I It is.
- 41:20It's my, because it's my life.
- 41:21Yeah.
- 41:22But it's also, you live and breathe it.
- 41:23Yes.
- 41:23Yeah.
- 41:23You can just feel that and it feels like you're somebody that, somebody could trust in this space.
- 41:29I hope so.
- 41:29It feels like that.
- 41:30It's a good feeling.
- 41:31You are feeling, you are a very trusting person.
- 41:32Like talking to you.
- 41:33I feel like it's talking to somebody that I've known forever.
- 41:35Because you're so open, you're so honest.
- 41:37Talking about your weight and like going down memory lane to when you were like a teenager.
- 41:41That's not like an easy thing to bring up.
- 41:44And you do this with your patients so they trust you instantly.
- 41:47You're helping people.
- 41:48Yeah.
- 41:48You don't want them to feel judged by you.
- 41:50You don't want anybody to feel judged by you.
- 41:51No.
- 41:52What is the fad now?
- 41:54Yeah.
- 41:54Healthy like the fad then.
- 41:55So the fad now is healthy.
- 41:57Yes.
- 41:57Have you ever seen those memes where it's eat whole foods, but also don't eat too much, but then don't have coconut oil, but also, so there is so many messages coming that I think the message now is less is more.
- 42:07Yes.
- 42:07So shopping the perimeter when my kids ask for a snack, my goal is okay, but it has to be from the refrigerator.
- 42:13We have our snack habits, I buy the mini muffins, I buy the fruit roll-ups.
- 42:16I think you'll feel better if you have X, Y, and Z.
- 42:19So that's the messaging.
- 42:20It's more about the feel less of the look.
- 42:22Yes.
- 42:23And I need to eat breakfast.
- 42:25I eat throughout the day and I think that's the best thing I've ever done for myself.
- 42:28Instead of starving yourself all day.
- 42:30And then overeating later.
- 42:31I think your kids need to see that, but need to see what you're eating.
- 42:36So it's not like snacking all day on Chex Mix and pretzels.
- 42:40It's understanding protein makes you.
- 42:43Full protein also gives you muscles like depending, like changing it to age appropriate talking about it.
- 42:48And Devin now will start, my daughter, she's five, will start saying this steak is gonna give me a lot of energy.
- 42:53And I'm like, it absolutely.
- 42:54Oh my gosh.
- 42:54So we finally have, I love that.
- 42:56Love that.
- 42:56I feel like I am jumping outta my seat because we've talked about how we struggle with the messaging.
- 43:04Yes.
- 43:04There's like healthy messaging, I think now more so than ever.
- 43:08But we don't know how the frick to talk to our kids about.
- 43:11Food in general without, we don't, it's like we don't wanna shame them.
- 43:15Yeah.
- 43:15We don't wanna guilt them and be like, two more bites, three more bites.
- 43:18Four more bites.
- 43:19'Cause we want them to have this like intuitive eating, but also it's very frustrating when they are like, I don't wanna eat this.
- 43:25I'm full.
- 43:26I'm like, no, you're not.
- 43:27I know you're not full.
- 43:28You only have one bite and you're gonna have snacks later.
- 43:30And we're worried that we're being pushy and the snacks aren't gonna give you good fuel and you have hockey practice.
- 43:35So we're in sync about energy and not the image.
- 43:38Yeah.
- 43:38But we don't know what to say.
- 43:40Yeah.
- 43:40And what I'm finding, because this is where I'm deeply struggling, is that the message I'm seeing right now, and again, this could be a trap with the algorithm, the message that is I'm seeing right now on how to talk to your kids is to not make food a big deal.
- 43:55Like you basically put, and I'm not gonna, you put the dessert on the plate, the parenting, and I'm not gonna shame the parenting experts, quote unquote, that are talking about this, but I could assume that people could put two and two together.
- 44:06It's all food is created equal.
- 44:09Put the cake with the apples and let them have at it.
- 44:13And you don't make a big deal about one.
- 44:15You don't say, oh, the apples are healthy, the cake is not healthy.
- 44:18That verbiage should not be used in the messaging from the parents.
- 44:23And I think that's bullshit.
- 44:25Like I think that's extremely dangerous because it's not the same.
- 44:29It is not the same.
- 44:31And so I think that it would be helpful growing up to share that information without making pressure on it.
- 44:39But how could you tell a kid that cake is the same as fruits and vegetables?
- 44:44How this is a big thing in my house because when I had kids, I was like, my kids are not gonna be obsessed with food.
- 44:49My kids are not gonna be obsessed with dessert.
- 44:50So I said, Brandon, we are putting the cookie on the plate.
- 44:54And he was like, this is insane.
- 44:55We're not doing this.
- 44:56I did it sometimes, but honestly, no.
- 44:59That's not gonna work.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:00So the biggest thing is food does not have a moral compass.
- 45:03There is not good food and bad food.
- 45:05Okay.
- 45:05Food does not do good things or do bad things.
- 45:07Food has a place in your diet at all times, but there's different foods for different things, so different foods for different things.
- 45:14Yes.
- 45:15Okay.
- 45:15I like that.
- 45:16So there's food for enjoyment.
- 45:17You go to a circus and you're having cotton candy that is nostalgic and environmental and you're enjoying it, then you're at a meal or you're watching a movie.
- 45:27Yes.
- 45:27And you're having popcorn.
- 45:28Exactly.
- 45:29Food for enjoyment.
- 45:30My kids will always say, can we watch a movie tonight?
- 45:31And I know it's yeah.
- 45:32'cause you want popcorn and candy, right?
- 45:34Yeah.
- 45:34But so there's that, and there's all of that, right?
- 45:36And then there's food for fuel, and that's the food that is proteins and fat.
- 45:41So cheese sticks.
- 45:42My kids like these beef jerky, there's food for fuel like that.
- 45:46Oh yeah.
- 45:46The chomps.
- 45:46Yeah.
- 45:47Yeah.
- 45:47That's great.
- 45:48And then there's just filler food that taste good.
- 45:49And you should really only have that if you've already had the.
- 45:53Fuel food.
- 45:53But it's hard with kids.
- 45:55So yes, there's days where my kids go from goldfish to pretzels to cookies, whatever, or snacking all day.
- 46:00But all you can do is be consistent in what you're eating in front of them, making sure they have a protein option every meal that they have.
- 46:07And you choose what goes into your house.
- 46:10They choose what they eat.
- 46:11Okay.
- 46:11So whatever's there, if I put out a plate of cut up peppers and cucumbers, when my kid has friends over, they're all going to it, as opposed to if I'm putting out chips and salsa.
- 46:21Because they'll go to that too.
- 46:22Yes.
- 46:22They'll go to both.
- 46:23If you put out pirate's, booty, they'll eat that.
- 46:24They'll, but when I'm cutting up a melon or I'm cutting up, I don't know how to cut a melon, but if I'm cutting up fruit or vegetables, my kids will come over to me and take it and start eating it because it's there and available.
- 46:34If you're eating it I'm just cutting it for the week and I leave it in the fridge, so if it's like exposure.
- 46:40If they're exposed to it.
- 46:40It's exposure.
- 46:41Yeah.
- 46:41And that's what you, so what you're doing is working.
- 46:43They are obsessed with dessert and they love dessert, but yeah, it's working.
- 46:47So then how do you to them about that then?
- 46:50Okay.
- 46:50With dessert, when it's dessert, if it has a name, this is dessert.
- 46:54This is we have this after meal, after the meal.
- 46:55This is for like the social part or the fun part or the sweet treat before we go to bed.
- 47:00Like I'm okay with it being that I'm not okay with it being an part of the plate.
- 47:05So since they were little, we've always fed them what we eat.
- 47:08And I know people listening are like, yeah, like my kid will only have mac and cheese.
- 47:12We just always did it.
- 47:13And some nights Dana will love the steak and Devin will say, gross and won't look at.
- 47:19She wants to have the dessert, she has to eat the meal.
- 47:22Okay.
- 47:22If you're hungry enough, you're gonna eat the meal.
- 47:24Like you cannot have the dessert if you're not gonna have the steak.
- 47:27Okay.
- 47:27So you, it's safe to the boundary.
- 47:31That's how you hold that boundary.
- 47:31I do.
- 47:31You're firm on, I don't like that.
- 47:32Dessert is bad, but I say you need to eat this first because, this is what's nutritious.
- 47:36Okay.
- 47:36Okay.
- 47:37I like say it's bad versus good, but this is what our dinner is.
- 47:40This is the Q why.
- 47:41So this is, there is no shame around food and there's no praise around food.
- 47:45Is that are you, I'm not like, oh, clean plate club.
- 47:47'Cause a lot of my patients come in and say, growing up we had to finish our food.
- 47:51We were so poor that we were shamed if we didn't enjoy and appreciate the food we had.
- 47:56So a lot of people gained weight that way and they never learned that intuitive eating.
- 48:00So they don't, my kids don't need to finish their plates.
- 48:02They need to at least taste it.
- 48:05It try it.
- 48:05At least try it.
- 48:06Yep.
- 48:07Or know that if you're not gonna try it, there's not gonna be a snack after dinner.
- 48:10Okay.
- 48:10I that because you're going to bed.
- 48:12In my mind, that is how I would like to operate.
- 48:14Yes.
- 48:14And I think I do most of the time operate that way.
- 48:17But then I hear this talk about noise, right?
- 48:19Like you hear the social media noise and the guilt and the shame around food messaging and all of this.
- 48:25And I'm like, I don't wanna be like sitting here screwing both of them up and how they have a relationship with food.
- 48:30So I'm trying to do the right thing.
- 48:32But then you feel like, yeah, but you wouldn't sit down to dinner with Raj and put a cookie and Skittles on your plate.
- 48:37No, it would not on your dinner.
- 48:38I heard that and I have heard it several times from several different platforms.
- 48:43It's, I'm like.
- 48:45What, like I actually wanna be somebody that comments on the thing, like what the actual f are you talking about?
- 48:50Like how I always come back to the data and it's like, where are the kids that had that sort of parenting now?
- 48:56And can you verify that they have a healthy relationship with food now?
- 49:01And that's also how you talk to them.
- 49:02That same kid who's not eating their salmon and green beans after dinner is like, mom, I'm hungry.
- 49:07I want a snack.
- 49:08And we'll say that's, that happens at my house all the day.
- 49:10So what?
- 49:10So what's a good message for that?
- 49:12Dinner was 15 minutes ago.
- 49:13Yeah.
- 49:14You told me you weren't hungry.
- 49:15There'll be breakfast in the morning.
- 49:16So that's it.
- 49:17And I get it.
- 49:18Oh, you seem mean.
- 49:19They're like, but we're hungry.
- 49:21If you were that hungry, you're gonna eat the plate and we'll leave the plate on the table for them.
- 49:24If you're hungry, great.
- 49:25Your salmon's waiting for you.
- 49:26So you offer the same thing from before.
- 49:28Okay.
- 49:29See, I, but they, yeah, that's hard.
- 49:30I'm struggling in this house right now because yesterday I made dinner at one o'clock.
- 49:34I grilled pork chops.
- 49:35I made couscous and then I made like a salad that nobody eats the salad except for me and Nick.
- 49:42We are the only ones that are eating the salad.
- 49:43Sometimes the girls eat it, but then it's okay, first wave, when they get off the bus, they're having something to eat.
- 49:49Then second wave before we go to practice.
- 49:52Third wave when we get home.
- 49:54Yeah.
- 49:54So I'm only eating once, so sometimes they're not always seeing me.
- 49:58You guys are busy reading.
- 49:59We can sit down as a family because they're three and five as like sports and stuff come in.
- 50:04It's gonna be tougher.
- 50:06But I don't know that life yet, growing up, I did sit down with a family.
- 50:09I guess by the time we've gotten to this point now, my boys are like pretty good.
- 50:13And they know what they're eaters.
- 50:14Yes.
- 50:14And if they're gonna gimme a hard time about it, I'm like, go to your room then I don't wanna hear about Yeah.
- 50:19Maybe build the foundation.
- 50:19They're a little, they're a little older.
- 50:20I also question myself, both of my kids are in the lower weight category.
- 50:24They're percentiles are third percent.
- 50:27And I wonder if I would have the same message for them if they were overweight.
- 50:31And that's what I, and I hope they never struggle with being overweight, but I wonder if I would be as lenient or Sure.
- 50:39Or have dessert or buying the minim.
- 50:40I wonder And I'll hopefully, we'll never know.
- 50:44But it's a hard life to be weight.
- 50:46Yeah.
- 50:46I it is.
- 50:47I, so I have four kids.
- 50:48They're all pretty much like.
- 50:50Decent.
- 50:50They're athletic too.
- 50:51They're athletic.
- 50:52My middle son is the best eater out of all of them.
- 50:55He eats in air quotes like the healthiest.
- 50:58Okay.
- 50:58And he, so when you say best, you mean healthiest?
- 51:00Not that he tries a variety.
- 51:01No.
- 51:01Like he eats the most of everything.
- 51:03Like he'll eat the steak, he'll eat the salad, he'll eat the co.
- 51:07He eats like how I want him to eat.
- 51:09I'm like, oh my God, you're such a strong Yes.
- 51:10He naturally gravitates towards good things.
- 51:12I'm such a strong boy.
- 51:13Like you're such a good eater.
- 51:14Yeah.
- 51:15And he outta all my kids is like the stockies.
- 51:17And he'll say to me like, mom, I'm fat.
- 51:19Like why am I so fat?
- 51:21And that's the genetics and metabolism, like it's not anything.
- 51:24Just keep doing what you're doing.
- 51:25In the end it's gonna work out.
- 51:26It's hard.
- 51:26I'm like hard told you at school that you are, you could tell them that you are healthy.
- 51:30And at that age she's door.
- 51:31Which we were just saying.
- 51:33He's at that age where you're becoming aware of your body.
- 51:35Yes.
- 51:35And maybe what you're putting in it and you're comparing and that honestly, that breaks my heart to even hear that on the outside because like you're saying, he's sitting there.
- 51:43Doing the right things.
- 51:44Right, Eating the correct way.
- 51:45And then his siblings are sitting there eating Skittles all the time and he's probably, yeah.
- 51:49We also shouldn't limit his food because if in your mind, if you're like, then I'll start giving him less so he doesn't need as much.
- 51:56He's gonna start sneaking food and then people, and then they get obese that way, I know.
- 52:00So what's gonna happen?
- 52:01Try, I try to limit his sweets.
- 52:03Okay.
- 52:04Like the sweets.
- 52:04Because sometimes he'll go overboard on the sweetss, like the other kids will graze through the meal and they'll go off to their sports.
- 52:12Vincent will eat his whole plate like a good, healthy boy.
- 52:15Yeah.
- 52:15And then he'll have, he'll want two or three ice creams.
- 52:18I'm like, can we maybe just have one ice cream?
- 52:21But then I don't wanna make it a thing because I know, like you said, he'll hard be sitting it in his room.
- 52:27Like after all that, will he ever be like, oh, I eat a little bit too much.
- 52:30I've never seen him do that.
- 52:31So I, he's like a bottomless pet, and now I'm like really oversharing?
- 52:36Now he's on, he has a DHD and now that it's school time.
- 52:39Yeah.
- 52:39He's on the A DHD medication and he, so you under eat during the day, so he won't eat as much during the day.
- 52:44So when I, he comes home and he's binging Spamish.
- 52:47I know it's because he hast eaten a thing the entire day.
- 52:50The food is tricky.
- 52:51It's so tricky.
- 52:52And we, and it all comes down to genetics.
- 52:54So if he's gonna be a stocky little boy, he's gonna be a stocky little boy.
- 52:57Yeah.
- 52:57And you're gonna love him.
- 52:58And that's him.
- 52:59He's not gonna have high cholesterol and diabetes because he is eating well.
- 53:02But if his body type is stockier go have fun at football.
- 53:05Embrace it.
- 53:06Yeah.
- 53:06I'm not like body positivity, obesity, I'm body positivity.
- 53:09This is what you have.
- 53:10Like this is your belt.
- 53:10This is your belt.
- 53:11Yeah.
- 53:11And I used to hate my whatever, insert my stomach, my butt, whatever I see on Dana.
- 53:16Dana has my butt.
- 53:17I love her little butt.
- 53:18But I ever want to.
- 53:20Talk to her.
- 53:20Like I used to talk to myself.
- 53:22I know.
- 53:22Now I know.
- 53:23It's, she's the cutest little butt in the world.
- 53:24When you become a parent, especially when you become a parent of girls, of a girl, you, it's crazy how your mind just shifts about how you think about yourself.
- 53:35I'm sure it could go to both extremes, where maybe you become harder on them if you're noticing something about yourself, Yeah.
- 53:43If you see like a correlation there, it's probably triggering, oh, absolutely.
- 53:47But it also makes you very sympathetic and it also makes you more aware of how you speak to yourself and how you think about things.
- 53:54And you didn't like this about yourself, but now it's on your kid and it's, it's hard.
- 53:58Parenting's hard and the food part of it, you hope doesn't become a thing.
- 54:02You want it just to be natural and you want it to be dinnertime.
- 54:05Kids let's have our chicken and broccoli and rice.
- 54:08But it's gonna become a thing.
- 54:09So you just have to be equipped how to deal with it.
- 54:11And the best thing I could say is never call a food good or bad.
- 54:14Okay.
- 54:14I like that advice.
- 54:15Food, good or bad.
- 54:16I like that a lot.
- 54:16And you are not good or bad for eating said food, right?
- 54:19Like patients come in and say, oh, I was so bad yesterday.
- 54:22Yes.
- 54:22I was like, did you rob a bank?
- 54:23And they're like, no, I had ice cream.
- 54:24And I'm like, no.
- 54:25Walk out the door.
- 54:26Yeah.
- 54:26So you gotta talk to yourself like food is food, you mess up, you start over tomorrow.
- 54:32But it doesn't have to even be mess up.
- 54:34You're right.
- 54:34Absolutely.
- 54:35You mess up in your mind.
- 54:36You mess up in your mind.
- 54:37You didn't follow your prescribed perfect plan in your mind.
- 54:40I'm a failure, you, ooh.
- 54:43I shouldn't have had those m and ms as I walked upstairs last night for bed.
- 54:46I'm a failure.
- 54:47Tomorrow morning you wake up, you don't skip breakfast to make up for it.
- 54:51Those calories you start and you have your eggs and you have your toast and you go it's a reset.
- 54:57Yes.
- 54:57And that's part of what the medical weight management.
- 55:01Practice does is because it's reframing, it's psychological medical, it's a whole new field that we're learning about.
- 55:07And these medications are a great tool for that.
- 55:09I love, so my mom grew up poor.
- 55:12They were like immigrants from Italy and they grew up poor.
- 55:14So I wanted to eat like the snack wells.
- 55:17I wanted a Lunchable, I wanted to buy lunch.
- 55:20And she was like, the processed food.
- 55:21No.
- 55:21You cannot eat that.
- 55:23That is crap.
- 55:24And part of it was a, it was how she was raised because that other stuff cost money.
- 55:28Whereas like the garden was essentially free.
- 55:30Yeah.
- 55:31And B, it was like, she would call it crap.
- 55:33It was never like she was ahead of the game for weight loss it was never like for aesthetics purposes, she was like.
- 55:39No, this is actual shit.
- 55:41Crap.
- 55:42You are not eating this.
- 55:43You have to eat this.
- 55:44But that's how you, and that was what was available and that's what you like now, right?
- 55:47But I feel like I rebelled a little bit.
- 55:49'Cause I was like, when I become a mom, I'm gonna give my kids chips and snacks and this and that, and I'm gonna, I'm not saying it a big deal and I'm gonna do all the things.
- 55:57And then I'm like, oh my God, they're absolute monster terrors when they eat this stuff.
- 56:01Like food really does affect I just prescribed the Thrive Market.
- 56:05Have you ever heard of Thrive Market?
- 56:05Yes.
- 56:06Oh I just prescribed it and I'm gonna be like, does Red 40 really do anything?
- 56:10I don't know.
- 56:11And I'm not an expert, but I'm trying the Oreos from Thrive Market instead of the grocery store and Right.
- 56:15I'll let you know if it works, but you can report back to us.
- 56:18But t do you feel like with that messaging being shared from your mom, do you feel like you have an unhealthy relationship with food?
- 56:25I feel like no.
- 56:26It's like she's a good one.
- 56:26She I have a really good relationship with food.
- 56:29Yeah.
- 56:29Don't think it did any damage.
- 56:31I think it was like probably one of the best things that she could have done for me.
- 56:34And parents should put so much blame on themselves, do the best.
- 56:36You We're all doing the best we can.
- 56:38With everything with parenting.
- 56:39Yes.
- 56:39So this is just another part of it.
- 56:41Yes.
- 56:41I love that.
- 56:42Yeah.
- 56:42It's turned into a parenting podcast again.
- 56:43I know.
- 56:43We, it always does.
- 56:45It always circles back because I always like to come at everything from all the moms that are listening in.
- 56:50Mm-hmm.
- 56:50And just relating it back to that in a way, if we took the roof off of all of our house, the same shit is going on at our house.
- 56:56Oh, yep.
- 56:57At the same time.
- 56:58Or your daughter was yelling at you?
- 56:59Maybe not at four.
- 57:00Mine was the night before, but she called me like, I feel like all of our kids won't sleep in their own beds.
- 57:05They don't wanna go to sleep at night.
- 57:07Then they're gonna grow up and they're gonna have a husband.
- 57:09Then they're gonna wanna sleep in their own room and like Dev, I'll go in your bed like, you can sleep with Brandon.
- 57:14I'll go in your bed.
- 57:15You're delightful.
- 57:16We all have such similar things going on.
- 57:19Yep.
- 57:19And we don't all have the answers.
- 57:21Sometimes things work, sometimes these don't work and we don't all talk about it, which is we don't all talk about our weight.
- 57:25We exactly need to.
- 57:26Yes.
- 57:27No one wants to be friends with a thin girl at the table who says no to bread, and you don't know why.
- 57:32It's'cause you're on ozempic, right?
- 57:33That's why.
- 57:35But sometimes these medicines let you do it.
- 57:37So it's the first time in my life that I can have the bread basket and not worry about gaining weight, right?
- 57:42I used to weigh myself every day and I was like, oh, it went up a pound.
- 57:46Oh, I really shouldn't have had that peanut butter on the apple.
- 57:49That doesn't matter.
- 57:50Now, I tell my patients once a week, every time, the same week, once a week.
- 57:54And if it's gonna mess with your head, don't ever do it.
- 57:56And just do it here.
- 57:57Turn around.
- 57:58So some, sometimes that measuring is like unhealthy barometer, right?
- 58:02For people's success scale victories are great.
- 58:04One thing, non-scale victories are better, right?
- 58:07And we talked about those earlier, about lowering your cholesterol, all those other health benefits.
- 58:12But also the grandma who can now run around with her grandkids or the person who loves to travel, but never would because the airplane seat belt didn't fit them.
- 58:20Those are non-scale victories.
- 58:21Love having a, the reunion coming up and feeling comfortable going,'cause you missed 20 and 25 because you felt overweight.
- 58:27Oh.
- 58:28So like the, those are great.
- 58:29I love that term.
- 58:29Non-scale victory.
- 58:31And they're big ones.
- 58:32Like their knees don't hurt, they don't need to get knee replacements surgery anymore.
- 58:35Nick said for every pound you lose is 15 pounds off your knee.
- 58:39Mm-hmm.
- 58:39Or some like crazy.
- 58:41I'll give equation people a 15 pound weight and I'll be like, you were carrying that around for your whole life.
- 58:46And now they're like, wow.
- 58:47Yeah, I like that because then I, again, it goes back to what we were talking about the beginning of the episode where.
- 58:54There shouldn't be shame in wanting to change something about yourself if you feel like you need to.
- 59:00And I don't mean that from a look perspective as much as, I mean from a within perspective.
- 59:05Yes.
- 59:05And I like correlating it to this non-scale victory because you know you're gonna feel better and it impacts your day to day when you're feeling good about yourself going to the beach with your kids.
- 59:15Yes.
- 59:15And feeling comfortable in the bathing suit and building the sandcastle.
- 59:18Yes.
- 59:18Instead of wrap, being wrapped up and worrying about things.
- 59:22Yes.
- 59:22Like it is.
- 59:22So I love correlating that to the non-scale victories.
- 59:25Sometimes if you do things to better yourself, you feel better, and then you live your life better, yes.
- 59:32And you're a happier person when you feel good about yourself.
- 59:34And that's not, doesn't mean you're wearing a size four jeans.
- 59:37It just means you're doing everything in your power to make yourself better and to feel better.
- 59:40There shouldn't be shame in that.
- 59:42No.
- 59:42And you should share how you do it for other people so other people can do it.
- 59:45I love that.
- 59:46That's a great message to end with.
- 59:48Yeah, I love that.
- 59:49I don't know how we could have gotten, I feel like we squeezed all of our questions.
- 59:52This was great.
- 59:53Thank you so much for sharing.
- 59:55We're gonna close our episode with our pink spotlight.
- 59:59And our pink spotlight is a person, place thing, tip, mantra.
- 1:00:03Anything that we're doing to make either life a little bit better, or for t and i, it's the week a little bit better.
- 1:00:08So yeah.
- 1:00:09Do you wanna start out, Steph, do you have one that you can share?
- 1:00:11So I've been thinking about this for weeks.
- 1:00:12Oh my God.
- 1:00:13Since I was asked to be on the SI was like, what's my pink spotlight?
- 1:00:16So today my pink spotlight is my sister and I were in Cape Cod this summer.
- 1:00:20Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:20And we were walking around Chatham and they had these charm bars set up and you could make your own bracelet, your own necklace.
- 1:00:26And they had.
- 1:00:27Like religious affiliations and letters and animals.
- 1:00:30So we created these charms and I'm wearing one today that has like a beach and my horoscope and a ladybug.
- 1:00:35And so my sister was like, this is amazing.
- 1:00:36We need to start doing this.
- 1:00:38And she recently we started charmed.
- 1:00:41I love it.
- 1:00:41H-A-R-M-D-I love it.
- 1:00:43D is for our mother.
- 1:00:44Aw.
- 1:00:45And we'll be having parties around the area.
- 1:00:47So fun.
- 1:00:47Yeah.
- 1:00:48So I'm wearing a necklace and I, oh my God, I love this.
- 1:00:51Oh my God.
- 1:00:51Where can little, where can our listeners find you?
- 1:00:53So it's charmed by dd.
- 1:00:56Okay, perfect.
- 1:00:56And you guys, you said you were booking parties, like if somebody was having a birthday party or like a girl's party, you'll set up off to the side and people that's, and they can custom make stuff.
- 1:01:05Oh, kids size bracelets with the little Taylor Swift.
- 1:01:07I love it.
- 1:01:07Cowboy boots is, this could be keeper is the price point.
- 1:01:10Don.
- 1:01:10It's real.
- 1:01:11So they're 18 karat gold filled.
- 1:01:12It's not a fine jewelry line, but they're fun to mix and match.
- 1:01:15So I'd say the bracelets are around like.
- 1:01:17$30 and then each charm is like seven to 10.
- 1:01:20I love it.
- 1:01:20So it's a very good price point.
- 1:01:22Yes.
- 1:01:22And they look, they're fun.
- 1:01:23I love it.
- 1:01:24They're beautiful.
- 1:01:24I love it.
- 1:01:25Like change.
- 1:01:25And I like fun.
- 1:01:26That you like can tailor it to Yes.
- 1:01:28I know.
- 1:01:28'cause I feel like I'm all about like the customization of things and I feel like that's just really fun.
- 1:01:33Yes.
- 1:01:33I just thought it look so cute on all the Cape Cod girls and I was like, I need to do this.
- 1:01:37Oh, what a good idea.
- 1:01:38I love that.
- 1:01:38And I love when people lean into their creativity.
- 1:01:41Yes.
- 1:01:41That's all Emily.
- 1:01:41But like you said, your sister Emily, she's great, is very creative.
- 1:01:44She loves creating things and making things for people.
- 1:01:47And and this is cool.
- 1:01:48I feel like this is just another example of having an idea, putting it out there I'm surpris, I'm shocked do, she's putting it to fruition.
- 1:01:54I love for her.
- 1:01:55Yeah, I was say Emily, I support you.
- 1:01:56I do not wanna be a part of any of the admin.
- 1:01:59I Oh no, I think you're gonna help her.
- 1:02:01You're gonna help her.
- 1:02:01You're gonna help her go to all the parties.
- 1:02:02I would love to help her behind this.
- 1:02:04Behind the scenes.
- 1:02:05Yeah, Christina does jewelry.
- 1:02:06I know.
- 1:02:07I would love, that's I know like a little collaboration.
- 1:02:09She has a charm on now.
- 1:02:10That's what made me think of it.
- 1:02:11That's beautiful.
- 1:02:12I have a little tennis track.
- 1:02:13I love that.
- 1:02:13Perfect.
- 1:02:13And a got piece for my tennis team.
- 1:02:15Perfect.
- 1:02:16Aren't they cute?
- 1:02:16It's beautiful.
- 1:02:17I love that.
- 1:02:18And I love that.
- 1:02:18That's something that's like coming back.
- 1:02:20Where I feel like when we were growing up, it was what did we have?
- 1:02:22I feel like, why am I blanking on the Pandora bracelet?
- 1:02:25Pandora, you would just have stuff that you would like.
- 1:02:27Alex and Ani bracelets were huge in college.
- 1:02:30The charm was a big one.
- 1:02:31Yeah.
- 1:02:31Like where it's like you build your collection around things that matter to you and I feel like this is fun.
- 1:02:35Or just a good old fashioned like charm necklace.
- 1:02:38Yes.
- 1:02:38Or if your kid's going to have her recital, you'll get her like an extra belly charm to add.
- 1:02:42Like you can add things.
- 1:02:42So it's fun.
- 1:02:43That's really fun.
- 1:02:44Okay.
- 1:02:44That's adorable.
- 1:02:45I love that video.
- 1:02:46I love that great pink spotlight.
- 1:02:47Thank you for sharing us.
- 1:02:47What about you?
- 1:02:49So I just started putting out all my pumpkins and Fall girl, which inspired me is that I am a huge Mackenzie child.
- 1:02:56You are.
- 1:02:56Oh, you're girl.
- 1:02:57I walked in.
- 1:02:57I know.
- 1:02:58I'm a huge Mackenzie child collector.
- 1:03:00And I that's been my go-to for gifts for you love.
- 1:03:02I'm gonna give you a little backstory.
- 1:03:03So when Joseph was born, I think he was like.
- 1:03:07Three or four months old, I started collecting Mackenzie Child and I would go down the only store in Connecticut at the time, other than Lux Bond and Green, which only had the black and white check was Middlebury Consignments.
- 1:03:18My girlfriend Vanessa and I would drive down to Middlebury and we would like, there was a little cafe there and we would get like one piece, we would pick it out.
- 1:03:25'cause everything is hand painted.
- 1:03:26So we would pick out the one we wanted.
- 1:03:28And we met the owners of the store, Dean and Rachel, who are our age, who had just had a baby.
- 1:03:33And we, they are best friends, they have four kids.
- 1:03:36So we've been friends now with them for over 12 years.
- 1:03:38And so I love to get all my pieces at her store and I still now I, you're so Maddy down there, I get like one at a time.
- 1:03:45Yeah.
- 1:03:45'cause it's like a keepsake.
- 1:03:46It's like a nice, yeah, it's like special and they're expensive pieces, but I'll get they have great gifts too though.
- 1:03:51They're like such a nice gift to Reese.
- 1:03:53Have spoon to get, yeah.
- 1:03:55It goes with every, it's great, but I just, you're the, you like the black and white jack.
- 1:03:59She has the pink and white, right?
- 1:03:59Yeah, I have the ster.
- 1:04:00I like the sterling, which is like the pretty gray.
- 1:04:03Yep.
- 1:04:03I'll sh I'll post pictures.
- 1:04:05I just got the pumpkins are really cute.
- 1:04:06I just got a sterling pumpkin.
- 1:04:07I have the green in my bar downstairs.
- 1:04:09What about the pink, pink green pinks right here.
- 1:04:11I know what pink is right here.
- 1:04:11I just got a pink.
- 1:04:12The girls have a butterfly.
- 1:04:14The butterfly ones.
- 1:04:15I see that in there.
- 1:04:15I love the picture as a gift that I have.
- 1:04:17I like the floral one.
- 1:04:18That was like I don't know if that was limited edition, but I like, like the floral one for my stuff outside.
- 1:04:22They make a little kids' tea set.
- 1:04:24They, I, oh, we have tea set.
- 1:04:25My friend Ally has it for a girls.
- 1:04:27I love it.
- 1:04:27We have the tea set, but I love Mackenzie Childs and if you are in Connecticut, you should go down to, and actually, I think that they changed the name of their store.
- 1:04:36I don't think that they're like Middlebury consignment anymore.
- 1:04:39Yeah, I just wanted just Middlebury Furniture.
- 1:04:40Middlebury Furniture and Home Design.
- 1:04:42They have a 40,000 square foot.
- 1:04:44Warehouse and they moved the gift shop to there.
- 1:04:46Yeah.
- 1:04:46Their gift shop is out of this world.
- 1:04:48If you wanna just go down and just tell my sister and I'll take a ride.
- 1:04:51Yeah.
- 1:04:51Oh my.
- 1:04:51And they have a vineyard across the street.
- 1:04:53But anyways I'm in my fall Mackenzie Child era.
- 1:04:56Yeah.
- 1:04:56'cause that's when you typically bring out a lot of the stuff.
- 1:04:58Yes.
- 1:04:58'cause my the pumpkins are my pumpkin favorite pumpkin.
- 1:05:00Yeah.
- 1:05:00I know.
- 1:05:00I just saw somebody unboxing a bunch of those and I was like, those are so pretty.
- 1:05:03That's an investment I keep wanting to do.
- 1:05:04I know.
- 1:05:05I'm like at Home Goods getting the plastic ones, but one day I'll do that.
- 1:05:07Oh, they're beautiful.
- 1:05:09I love it.
- 1:05:09One a year.
- 1:05:11One a year.
- 1:05:11Yeah.
- 1:05:11But it's, yeah.
- 1:05:12But now you, but over time it's like you start to build a little collection.
- 1:05:16Yeah.
- 1:05:16And that's so nice.
- 1:05:16And I love that the stuff, it's just the same pattern, so you just keep adding Yeah.
- 1:05:20It doesn't look old.
- 1:05:21It's like very timeless looking.
- 1:05:23Yeah.
- 1:05:23So there you have it.
- 1:05:24I love it.
- 1:05:25So mine this week is I have been on a rebuying denim kick.
- 1:05:30Oh.
- 1:05:30Because for the first time in four or five years, I am a consistent size and I thought this was a appropriate place to share this because I've been postpartum out post just like all over the place.
- 1:05:43And so now I have a consistent size.
- 1:05:45So I've been rebuying my denim and I am obsessed with the pair that I'm wearing right now because I went back to investing in some denim pieces because I finally feel like, okay, I'm a consistent size, so this makes sense to do it now.
- 1:05:59So I have a pair of mother denim, I believe these are called the Rambler, and I don't know if I've just been out of the denim world for so long.
- 1:06:05They're great, but things are like stretchy, but keep the shape.
- 1:06:09Now they look like the Levi, the main one today.
- 1:06:12Yes.
- 1:06:12Are those mother?
- 1:06:13Mother?
- 1:06:13These are mother.
- 1:06:13I bought them for my sister, but I bought them for myself this morning.
- 1:06:17And they are an investment.
- 1:06:18Yes.
- 1:06:18But.
- 1:06:19They always will look good.
- 1:06:21Yes.
- 1:06:21And they keep their form.
- 1:06:22I've always been like in love with denim, like I'm a denim girl.
- 1:06:26But then when I just, I was either like pregnant or postpartum mm-hmm.
- 1:06:29and wearing leggings and so I was really like, out of the jean came for a really long time, think time.
- 1:06:34Very expensive.
- 1:06:34Over years.
- 1:06:34I think they did this.
- 1:06:35So first of all, the prices shot through the roof.
- 1:06:37Like ag used to be like one 10, everything went up.
- 1:06:39Like mother at least$50.
- 1:06:4150.
- 1:06:42Yeah.
- 1:06:42They used to be 200 and now they're two 50.
- 1:06:45So it, again, it was not the time to invest in those pieces.
- 1:06:48'cause I was like, I can't even stay a consistent size right now.
- 1:06:51But I feel like the stretchy jeans that we used to wear, yes.
- 1:06:55The jegging five plus years ago used to lose their shape a lot more.
- 1:06:59Yes.
- 1:06:59And then I feel like then the rigid styles became a little bit more what you wanted not comfortable for because you could, like they do have a time and a place like they suck you in.
- 1:07:06Yes.
- 1:07:07You feel like they, you get a little bit more shape maybe with them, but you cannot stay in them all day long.
- 1:07:12No, those you could wear day, all day.
- 1:07:14So now I feel like I'm like reentering denim and wearing denim and I'm like, wait a minute, where did you get them Locally?
- 1:07:21I get, I bought these from Revolve.
- 1:07:23I had gone into anthropology.
- 1:07:25About a month and a half ago and I did another denim, like I went, I was looking for a different pair of denim and that kind of started me off where I was like in there actually trying on jeans and I tried these on, but a different wash.
- 1:07:36And so I knew that they fit and I was like, okay, if I see a different wash somewhere else I'll buy those too.
- 1:07:41And so I had already tried them on.
- 1:07:42So I feel like my first pink spotlight,'cause I had shared that I went into the store and actually tried on Cho in stores.
- 1:07:49I think online is wonderful, but oh my god, going in and trying on jeans, I find myself at the mall.
- 1:07:54All the sees you the headache time.
- 1:07:55Yes.
- 1:07:55So that was huge for me was like finding the size and the style and like the brands that work.
- 1:08:01And trying them on and having fun with that.
- 1:08:03But then now that I know my size and a couple different brands, I'm like reordering things and I'm like, wow, okay.
- 1:08:08So even in five years things have improved and I am wearing these jeans and I will not take them off.
- 1:08:13I put them on first thing this morning, like before the kids got up, be in them all day long.
- 1:08:20Like what?
- 1:08:20Like usually I can't get out of them fast enough.
- 1:08:23Like when I come in it's like we do not wear jeans inside.
- 1:08:25And now I'm actually like, the jeans are like sweatpants now.
- 1:08:28I like they're more comfortable than some of my sweatpants.
- 1:08:31Okay.
- 1:08:32I love that.
- 1:08:32That's a stretch.
- 1:08:32So in just like shameless plugin Avon, there's a store Coco Lily.
- 1:08:36And she sells mother jeans there.
- 1:08:38I was gonna say Kimberly Boutique in West Har.
- 1:08:39They do.
- 1:08:40So Nordstrom has it.
- 1:08:41Yeah.
- 1:08:41It's nice to be able to go locally.
- 1:08:43And try on jeans.
- 1:08:44I love trying on.
- 1:08:45Yes.
- 1:08:45I feel like jeans are one of those things where you need to and I feel like with ordering, how many jeans are you gonna order at 250?
- 1:08:51The jeans in the same wash looks so different On different, yes.
- 1:08:54That's a good wash.
- 1:08:55It's so true.
- 1:08:56Same thing.
- 1:08:56Medium wash.
- 1:08:57So which one is that?
- 1:08:58What style is it?
- 1:08:59This is the ankle pipe jeans.
- 1:09:01The jeans pipe.
- 1:09:02Those are cute.
- 1:09:03I like those too.
- 1:09:03I love those because I'm like not so tall, but I could wear'em with all shoes.
- 1:09:07I love those.
- 1:09:08Yes.
- 1:09:08That's what I got these,'cause mine hit at the ankle.
- 1:09:10When I'm standing and there's, I can actually wear them with like boots.
- 1:09:13I can wear them with flats, with heels.
- 1:09:15It's that's why when you make an investment in jeans, make sure it's something that you can wear with a lot of different things.
- 1:09:21That's, you just gotta pull the trigger.
- 1:09:22You gotta just do it.
- 1:09:23But yeah.
- 1:09:23But then you won't buy another pair for a while.
- 1:09:25That's why I feel like I'm like, or I could buy a bunch of different kinds and I'm still not happy or invest in these trends.
- 1:09:30I go to the same too.
- 1:09:31Anyway, I feel like this trends, like I love a wide leg right now, but they might go out, so I might go to Gap or somewhere quick and stuff.
- 1:09:38But like staple pans that you like always can go grab.
- 1:09:42I agree with you.
- 1:09:42Yeah.
- 1:09:43So that was, I wanna be a wide leg jean garage.
- 1:09:46I love a pair of brown ones from Zara.
- 1:09:48And I wanna, we need to Zara here, you can do anything.
- 1:09:50Get us a Zara.
- 1:09:50I cannot on Zara feel like I'm too a short for them.
- 1:09:55You're not a tailor.
- 1:09:57Growing up my mom would bring us to the tailor there.
- 1:09:59Nothing.
- 1:09:59Think sometimes they can be elong, maybe need to bring them to the tailor.
- 1:10:02Yeah.
- 1:10:02I try, you know what, I didn't, I boxed them up and I was gonna return them, but I've been driving around with a box for two weeks.
- 1:10:08'Cause I'm like, no, I think maybe Spanx makes a really spank.
- 1:10:12I try, I want a brown pair and they look and feel so good.
- 1:10:17Spanx.
- 1:10:17I could bring mine over for you to try because I have them, I and I love them.
- 1:10:20Those, that's a good recommendation.
- 1:10:22Spanx for wide leg.
- 1:10:23Spanx, if you're like on the fence because they hug you and all the way know a jean.
- 1:10:26Yes.
- 1:10:27But they're like a fake gene.
- 1:10:28It's like a chino denim.
- 1:10:29Yes.
- 1:10:29Like a navy that's want to work and stuff.
- 1:10:32Yep.
- 1:10:32They have brown, they have black.
- 1:10:34Yep.
- 1:10:34They're just like, they look really good on heels.
- 1:10:35I'm in my brown era.
- 1:10:37Hug.
- 1:10:38Same.
- 1:10:38I love brown.
- 1:10:39Love it.
- 1:10:40On that note, guys, this was such a good one.
- 1:10:43Thank you for coming on.
- 1:10:43Thank you.
- 1:10:44Was easier than I thought.
- 1:10:44It was very, I know that when we had asked you, you were like, no, I don't like public speaking.
- 1:10:49Yeah no.
- 1:10:50And I was like, we need you to share your voice and your knowledge here on this podcast because if you turn on Instagram, just people don't.
- 1:10:58What to know what they're talking about or they think they do or they're sharing some, they're not sharing the whole story.
