- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, hey Angel fans, and welcome back to Halo Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: I'm Mike D. Giovanna, former Early Time sports writer, and
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm joined by my regular co host, Mark Trumbo, former
- 0:18Speaker 1: Angel slugger.
- 0:19Speaker 2: How you doing, Mark, all as well? Big win today,
- 0:24Speaker 2: a couple of big wins this series against the Seattle
- 0:28Speaker 2: Ball Club. You were there, Yeah, what did you see?
- 0:32Speaker 1: Well, yeah, we are taping Sunday night. Just got back
- 0:35Speaker 1: from the game a little while ago. What I did
- 0:37Speaker 1: see was a massive swelling on the left hand of
- 0:40Speaker 1: Mike Trout. Trout took a ninety four mile an hour
- 0:44Speaker 1: fastball to that hand, the left hand, in the eighth inning,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and he said that thing swelled up so quickly that
- 0:51Speaker 1: by the time we got the first base he couldn't
- 0:53Speaker 1: get his batting glove off. Now, X Rays weord negative.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Kurtsuzuki's said they think they dodged a bullet, and he's
- 1:03Speaker 1: day to day. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't
- 1:05Speaker 1: in the lineup against the Braves Monday night. Maybe misses
- 1:07Speaker 1: a few games. He did say after the game that
- 1:10Speaker 1: he felt a little bit better, but he's really still
- 1:13Speaker 1: stinging from the way the Mariners pitched him in this game,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and as you recall, Friday night, Brian wu came up
- 1:21Speaker 1: and in with a fastball on his first pitch and
- 1:24Speaker 1: then hit him in the left shoulder on his second pitch,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and Trout said after today's game he knows tree teams
- 1:31Speaker 1: are trying to get him out with fastballs up and end,
- 1:33Speaker 1: but quote, if you can't control it up there, you
- 1:36Speaker 1: shouldn't do it. So it is what it is. Mark,
- 1:39Speaker 1: What do you think about the way the Mariners pitched
- 1:41Speaker 1: Trout in this series and maybe the way they're pitching
- 1:44Speaker 1: to him this season. I don't like it at all.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that up and in is not a
- 1:51Speaker 2: strategy that I endorse. Except for a very very select few.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I can just draw on my own experience. Uh well,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I've had quite a few. I've gotten hit plenty of times.
- 2:04Speaker 2: But I remember years ago Paul Goldschmidt, uh, kind of
- 2:09Speaker 2: a magnet for getting hit, and he wore a couple
- 2:13Speaker 2: up and in handy. I think he broke his hand
- 2:15Speaker 2: on one of them. And I do recall, uh that
- 2:22Speaker 2: our longtime first base coach very well respect in the league,
- 2:26Speaker 2: Dave McKay had some had a conversation with I think
- 2:30Speaker 2: Ray Honeycutt at the time, and you know, it was amicable,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but basically saying the same thing that Mike's saying. You
- 2:36Speaker 2: know that that that's a very you know, tough spot
- 2:39Speaker 2: to pitch a superstar player. Are the rules different for
- 2:43Speaker 2: certain players? You know what I think they are? And
- 2:47Speaker 2: a guy like Aaron Judge, guy like Troudy, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: this just happens over and over. Once WU did it
- 2:54Speaker 2: to begin this series, it looked, you know, really bad
- 2:56Speaker 2: because it was twice in a row. I guess he
- 2:58Speaker 2: issued a bit of a haul of you later. I'm
- 3:01Speaker 2: gonna take it taken for his word that it was sincere,
- 3:04Speaker 2: but that that basically for the rest of the series
- 3:06Speaker 2: up and in is off the table. In my opinion,
- 3:09Speaker 2: you just can't. You can't drill a guy like Mike
- 3:12Speaker 2: Trout multiple times. I know a number of fans wanted
- 3:16Speaker 2: to see some retaliation. I'm not a huge fan of
- 3:19Speaker 2: that myself. You know, years ago, when when you could
- 3:23Speaker 2: a little more leeway to slide into second that may
- 3:27Speaker 2: have been the way to you know, the Whitley's. Some teams,
- 3:30Speaker 2: our team try to get back at these guys, but
- 3:33Speaker 2: now you know it's it's really limited, and you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: really the sometimes you you know, just have to you know,
- 3:39Speaker 2: Mike's not a guy that's going to charge them mount.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I doubt we'll ever see that. He was obviously frustrated.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You saw the hand. Yeah, it's not good for him,
- 3:47Speaker 2: it's not good for the team, it's not good for
- 3:49Speaker 2: the game. So, uh, Seattle, I think would benefit from,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know, thinking about how they're going about it, because
- 3:58Speaker 2: that doesn't last long. Not you know, teams don't have
- 4:02Speaker 2: a big appetite for their star players getting crushed.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, let's turn our attention to what Kurtzuzuki called the
- 4:09Speaker 1: Joe Show Friday Night, and if you were in Angels Stadium,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you're not going to forget this game. Joe Adell. Well,
- 4:17Speaker 1: first of all, one thing I've always enjoyed about covering
- 4:20Speaker 1: baseball for as long as I have is every year,
- 4:24Speaker 1: every year, you see something that you've never seen before.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You know, whether it's a triple play or a four
- 4:30Speaker 1: homer game, or I saw the Angels lose a game
- 4:35Speaker 1: once when Frankie Rodriguez was so ticked off about a
- 4:38Speaker 1: ball stripe call run around third up in Oakland, snaps
- 4:42Speaker 1: his glove at the pitch coming back from the catcher,
- 4:46Speaker 1: ball gets by him, squirts behind the mountain. The winning
- 4:48Speaker 1: run scores on a walk off gaff by Frankie. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: every year you see something that you've never seen before,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and I have never seen a player rob three home
- 4:57Speaker 1: runs in one game, including a spectacular diving catch over
- 5:02Speaker 1: the short wall near the right field foul pole in
- 5:04Speaker 1: the ninth inning to save Friday Nights one nothing victory.
- 5:09Speaker 1: If you haven't seen a picture, I'm not sure you've
- 5:12Speaker 1: been on social media for a while, but here's a
- 5:14Speaker 1: still shot of that catch. Mark. You've played right field
- 5:19Speaker 1: in Angels Stadium quite a bit. What would you say
- 5:24Speaker 1: is the degree of difficulty on a catch like that?
- 5:27Speaker 2: I can't believe it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that would have been a good time for that one.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was incredible. I think everyone's probably well aware.
- 5:40Speaker 2: If you're not, you know, good on you. It's everywhere.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I was mentioned a few times today during the broadcast,
- 5:49Speaker 2: and as it should be. You got guys like Tory Hunter,
- 5:53Speaker 2: who we had on our last episode. Yeah, it was
- 5:56Speaker 2: quite an interesting interview. If you guys get a chance
- 5:58Speaker 2: and haven't checked it out, might be worthwhile well, Tory said,
- 6:01Speaker 2: it's I believe the best defensive game he's he's seen.
- 6:05Speaker 2: He's seen a lot of baseball, and he's been the
- 6:06Speaker 2: guy that a lot of people probably would cite as being,
- 6:11Speaker 2: you know, a guy that is capable of those types
- 6:14Speaker 2: of plays routinely. And Joe did it three times in
- 6:17Speaker 2: one game, single handedly, really defeating the Mariners on his own.
- 6:21Speaker 2: That's three runs saved. I think he went from towards
- 6:24Speaker 2: the bottom on the defensive runs safe to possibly leading.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I believe he is leading. Yeah, so that's how quickly
- 6:31Speaker 2: things can turn. It looks like, you know, he's a
- 6:34Speaker 2: guy that has high energy. Seemed to be in the moment.
- 6:37Speaker 2: There was a great photo also they showed today, taken
- 6:40Speaker 2: from behind. Maybe he just showed it. If he did,
- 6:43Speaker 2: I'm not paying attention. Yeah, great shot by I don't
- 6:48Speaker 2: know who took it. I think they gave I think, yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 2: really really good job there, and that's iconic. I think
- 6:56Speaker 2: we'll see that for a long time to come. So
- 6:58Speaker 2: great job Joe. You know, we're really fortunate to get
- 7:02Speaker 2: to watch you.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 1: We caught up with Joe after the game and he
- 7:07Speaker 1: was pretty interesting talking about the kitch and you can
- 7:09Speaker 1: hear the excitement his voice. Let's as they say, go
- 7:12Speaker 1: to the videotape.
- 7:17Speaker 4: That was crazy, man. Just after the first one, we
- 7:21Speaker 4: were pretty fired up out there, and then got the
- 7:23Speaker 4: second one, which looked identical to the first one, and
- 7:26Speaker 4: I was like, wow, like my routes are on point tonight.
- 7:29Speaker 4: Then the third one was just just grit, just bottom
- 7:32Speaker 4: of the ninth, top of the ninth, getting it done.
- 7:34Speaker 4: So crazy?
- 7:35Speaker 1: Is that instinct?
- 7:36Speaker 5: Like but you have to dive over a wall, like
- 7:38Speaker 5: you mean even thinking that, I.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Mean, you just get there and then it's kind of
- 7:42Speaker 4: decision making. I think step one is just getting to
- 7:44Speaker 4: the spot and the ball say high enough where I
- 7:47Speaker 4: could get there and kind of looked similar a little
- 7:50Speaker 4: bit to the ball yesterday that bounced, but my position
- 7:54Speaker 4: was a little bit better and just got there and
- 7:56Speaker 4: was able to watch it all over and ended up
- 7:59Speaker 4: in somebody's up. I don't know who, but it's a
- 8:02Speaker 4: softer landing than I thought it would be, so kind
- 8:05Speaker 4: of crazy.
- 8:06Speaker 2: How much were the.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Fans broken up out day?
- 8:08Speaker 4: Was that?
- 8:08Speaker 2: How much are the fans company up out there in
- 8:09Speaker 2: right field?
- 8:10Speaker 4: They were fired up? I mean they were as fired
- 8:12Speaker 4: up as me, So that's all part of it.
- 8:13Speaker 1: We love that you've obviously put a lot of work
- 8:16Speaker 1: on your defense.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I mean, how rewarding isn'to Tevin Night like this after
- 8:19Speaker 2: what you've been through alf years.
- 8:21Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, obviously defense was something that I struggled
- 8:25Speaker 4: with when I first came up, and just finding ways
- 8:29Speaker 4: to improve and get better and find a way to learn.
- 8:32Speaker 4: And at the end of the day, I think defense
- 8:35Speaker 4: is one of those things where it's just about trying
- 8:37Speaker 4: to get the job done, doing what we can to
- 8:39Speaker 4: try to win. And you know, tonight we had a
- 8:42Speaker 4: tight one. These these last two games have been tight.
- 8:44Speaker 4: They've come to one run and just those plays. Sometimes
- 8:48Speaker 4: when you can have the opportunity, you just try to
- 8:50Speaker 4: go and make it happen. So very happy about it.
- 8:53Speaker 1: What do you think a forty hundred nine times go
- 8:55Speaker 1: glove winner calling at the best defensive game he's ever seen.
- 8:58Speaker 4: It's special. I said earlier he was sitting by my
- 9:01Speaker 4: locker up before the game, so I guess he must
- 9:03Speaker 4: have rubed something off where the game started. So appreciate that.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Please, We're going to take a quick break for a
- 9:12Speaker 1: word from our sponsors and we'll be right back with

- 10:20Speaker 1: Welcome back to Halo Territory. I'm Mike d. Giovanna with
- 10:23Speaker 1: Mark Trumbo. And you know you have done something very
- 10:27Speaker 1: special when Tory Hunter, a nine time Gold Glove Award
- 10:31Speaker 1: winner nickname spider Man for his ability to scale walls,
- 10:35Speaker 1: calls your performance the greatest defensive game ever. So let's listen.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And you know, we had Toy as a guest and
- 10:42Speaker 1: we talked a lot about his work with the Joe Adell.
- 10:47Speaker 1: But let's say his reaction was almost as interesting as
- 10:51Speaker 1: Joe's reaction. Let's hear a little bit more from Tory Hunter,
- 10:54Speaker 1: who's at the game Friday night.
- 11:00Speaker 7: Three times in one game, never maybe two, maybe two,
- 11:03Speaker 7: but never never three. And I've never seen a guy
- 11:06Speaker 7: on a third with fall in the stands, catch the ball,
- 11:08Speaker 7: keep his feet in like he's a wide receiver and
- 11:10Speaker 7: uh and come up with the catch and uh.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Man.
- 11:14Speaker 7: One thing about Joe, this guy listens. For the last
- 11:17Speaker 7: three years, he wanted to be better defensively. He he
- 11:20Speaker 7: actually called it out three years ago and he's just
- 11:22Speaker 7: been working and uh the work ethic that he's put
- 11:25Speaker 7: you know, put in his shows on the field. Uh
- 11:27Speaker 7: today of course, you know, on one of the biggest
- 11:30Speaker 7: stages in the Big League for the spring training. He's
- 11:32Speaker 7: been putting in work for years and uh, and man,
- 11:35Speaker 7: he looks really good out there. I was so excited
- 11:38Speaker 7: jumping up and down to the pressure. Almost passed. I
- 11:41Speaker 7: don't fifty, I can't be having that kind of It
- 11:45Speaker 7: was amazing, man that it was the greatest, probably the
- 11:48Speaker 7: greatest defensive game I've ever seen.
- 11:51Speaker 2: But you that last one was you think just that
- 11:52Speaker 2: what was your reaction when you saw him come up
- 11:54Speaker 2: to you know, put his club up after he caught.
- 11:56Speaker 7: In It was like from a movie scene. It's it's
- 11:58Speaker 7: as if the music was and then he caught the ball,
- 12:01Speaker 7: and then when he went down, we didn't see any
- 12:03Speaker 7: more than music, Paul, and then everybody and he came
- 12:07Speaker 7: up and say yeah, and everybody start chearing and almost
- 12:10Speaker 7: back blacked out. But just you know, not to take
- 12:15Speaker 7: it away from Joe. Man, I'm telling you guys, this
- 12:18Speaker 7: guy's were working his butt off defensively. He looks really good,
- 12:21Speaker 7: he looks confident, and after today, man, this guy's gotta
- 12:25Speaker 7: be you know, his stock had to go up today,
- 12:28Speaker 7: and because what I saw today was very impressive at
- 12:32Speaker 7: the plate, hit the ball hard, stay within himself, and
- 12:36Speaker 7: he helped the team win taking away three home runs.
- 12:39Speaker 7: I always say, man, I'd rather rob three home runs,
- 12:42Speaker 7: rob a home run than hit a home run. And
- 12:44Speaker 7: today I saw somebody rob three in one game. That's
- 12:47Speaker 7: never I don't think it's going to happen again.
- 12:50Speaker 1: He answered the call I praise, as they say now,
- 12:58Speaker 1: as Angel fans will remember, was not exactly a Gold
- 13:01Speaker 1: Glove candidate when he came up to the big League's
- 13:04Speaker 1: There's a famous play in Texas where he reached up
- 13:07Speaker 1: for a ball and the ball sport set of his
- 13:09Speaker 1: glove goes over the fence for a home run. But
- 13:13Speaker 1: you know, he's been fortunate to have to be able
- 13:16Speaker 1: to work with a guy like Tory Hunter in spring
- 13:19Speaker 1: training for the last few years. And Tory definitely rubbed
- 13:23Speaker 1: off on Joe Adell. And we're gonna hear a little
- 13:26Speaker 1: bit about exactly how a.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Few years now, how much is he impacted your development
- 13:32Speaker 2: in the outfield. It's been huge.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I think it's mental. When you're out there, you know,
- 13:37Speaker 4: it's a mindset of you know, going to get the
- 13:39Speaker 4: baseball being aggressive. I think defense Early on for me,
- 13:44Speaker 4: I felt like I was kind of caught in between
- 13:46Speaker 4: on a lot of plays, and sometimes that happens, and
- 13:48Speaker 4: that's part of the game. But just airing on the
- 13:51Speaker 4: side of being aggressive and trying to make the plays,
- 13:54Speaker 4: you'd be surprised how many you make. And that's kind
- 13:56Speaker 4: of our mindset. That's the mindset that he had for
- 13:59Speaker 4: all those years played in all those gold gloves. So
- 14:02Speaker 4: having somebody walk around like that and kind of give
- 14:04Speaker 4: you some insight and some of his knowledge is special.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Was it, Windy.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Mark? How's important is it as a young player, especially
- 14:13Speaker 1: to have mentors like Tory Hunter, you know, helping you
- 14:17Speaker 1: with all aspects of the game, but especially on defense.
- 14:22Speaker 2: It's invaluable to have a resource like him in particular,
- 14:26Speaker 2: you just are you're not going to find that elsewhere.
- 14:29Speaker 2: He's been there, he's done it. He can really relate.
- 14:33Speaker 2: That is the benefit of having ex players around. I
- 14:38Speaker 2: think that we are seeing some improvements in a number
- 14:40Speaker 2: of areas, and this staff is comprised largely of X
- 14:45Speaker 2: players ex managers, and Tory can not only tell you,
- 14:51Speaker 2: he can go out there and I'm assuming still demonstrate.
- 14:54Speaker 2: He'd you know about his age, but he doesn't look
- 14:57Speaker 2: a day older than when I played with him. You know,
- 14:59Speaker 2: he looks excellent, and I'm assuming he's still out there
- 15:02Speaker 2: with the glove playing cats, and you know he can
- 15:06Speaker 2: show you know, Okay, this is exactly how. It may
- 15:09Speaker 2: not be up to speed, but at least the technique.
- 15:12Speaker 2: And I've said at least once here before, I think
- 15:15Speaker 2: a lot of players are visual learners, so having a
- 15:18Speaker 2: guy that can literally demonstrate it for you could be
- 15:21Speaker 2: really valuable. I know that Joe talked about maybe being
- 15:24Speaker 2: a little in between early on, and he's now adopted
- 15:30Speaker 2: more of an aggressive mindset and it's really treated him well.
- 15:33Speaker 2: The Pro sports has played aggressively. If there's any passiveness
- 15:37Speaker 2: that will get exposed, and I think unfortunately early on
- 15:40Speaker 2: it did. And I don't know if that's entirely Joe's fault.
- 15:42Speaker 2: He was up awfully early in his career with he
- 15:46Speaker 2: did lack polish. And a question for you is is
- 15:49Speaker 2: that label, you know, is that the type of thing
- 15:51Speaker 2: that will follow a guy forever or at some point
- 15:55Speaker 2: does it become you know, this guy is capable and
- 15:58Speaker 2: those days are over.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I don't think it follows you forever. I know, I
- 16:02Speaker 1: mean back when I first started covering the Angels, Garrett Anderson,
- 16:07Speaker 1: he was known for not diving for baseballs. He was
- 16:12Speaker 1: very explicit on why he was a tall guy, not
- 16:15Speaker 1: the most athletic guy. He always felt if he started
- 16:19Speaker 1: diving around the outfield that he would get hurt, and
- 16:22Speaker 1: he didn't. You know, he's back then. He's a cleanup
- 16:24Speaker 1: batter on a championship caliber club. You don't want to
- 16:27Speaker 1: lose that bat. And I think he really he was
- 16:31Speaker 1: really hurt by the fact that he was often playing
- 16:33Speaker 1: left field next to Jim Edmunds, one of the greatest
- 16:36Speaker 1: most natural athletic, acrobatic center fielders in baseball history, let
- 16:41Speaker 1: alone Angel history, and darreners Dad, who would literally run
- 16:45Speaker 1: through a brick wall if he had to if it
- 16:48Speaker 1: meant saving a game. So Garrett kind of got attached
- 16:52Speaker 1: to that label. But you know he was. He got
- 16:55Speaker 1: really good at sliding, like Tim Salmon on sliding catches.
- 16:59Speaker 1: He had great rang She started taking better routes, and
- 17:02Speaker 1: I think, you know, by the middle of his career
- 17:04Speaker 1: he was a decent left fielder, even though he didn't
- 17:08Speaker 1: you know, rob a lot of home runs or dive
- 17:11Speaker 1: in the gaps or crash into walls. It's just that's
- 17:14Speaker 1: just the way he played. So it's a tough label
- 17:16Speaker 1: to overcome sometimes. I know some a lot of baseball
- 17:20Speaker 1: people always say, what does it take? Takes a minute
- 17:24Speaker 1: or a day to gain a reputation in a lifetime
- 17:27Speaker 1: to get rid of it, But you know, the game
- 17:29Speaker 1: does change. And Joe Adell was a Gold Glove finalist
- 17:32Speaker 1: two years ago in right field, and boy, he's off
- 17:34Speaker 1: to a good start this year. I do want to
- 17:37Speaker 1: end this segment on Joe Adell with something interesting that
- 17:40Speaker 1: manager Kurt Suzuki said after the game. Let's listen to
- 17:43Speaker 1: the quote and then I want to get your reaction
- 17:46Speaker 1: on it. Mark, how much of that third catch was athleticism?
- 17:50Speaker 1: How much is fearlessness?
- 17:53Speaker 3: You know? I think a lot of it was athleticism,
- 17:55Speaker 3: you know, but I think the one thing, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 3: talking to Joe, nooying Joe, is it's what he wants
- 18:01Speaker 3: to do to.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Help the ball to win.
- 18:02Speaker 3: You know, we talk about winning baseball players, right and
- 18:05Speaker 3: that right there shows you that, you know, it's all
- 18:09Speaker 3: about winning for him and what he can do to
- 18:11Speaker 3: help the team. And like I said, the makeup how
- 18:14Speaker 3: far he's come is pretty amazing.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And we're a week into this young season, and I mean, Joe,
- 18:23Speaker 1: he's lucky he didn't get hurt on that play. He
- 18:25Speaker 1: risked life and limb going into that crowd, and well,
- 18:28Speaker 1: you go into the fans, especially in New York and Boston,
- 18:32Speaker 1: you never know how you're gonna come out. What kind
- 18:35Speaker 1: of play like that do for a team? You know,
- 18:37Speaker 1: that's just trying to find its way and gel And
- 18:40Speaker 1: when you see a guy you know make an effort
- 18:43Speaker 1: like that and basically save a game. Can that rub
- 18:47Speaker 1: off on other players?
- 18:50Speaker 2: How could it not?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 18:53Speaker 2: I think it's the energy in the stadium goes up,
- 18:58Speaker 2: the energy with your teammates, especially these pitchers that benefited from,
- 19:03Speaker 2: you know, a run not attached to their name, a
- 19:06Speaker 2: loss not attached to their name. You know, I think
- 19:10Speaker 2: especially that last play, which was by far in a
- 19:13Speaker 2: way to me, the most difficult of the bunch. But
- 19:17Speaker 2: you know what, when you say, how do you do that?
- 19:19Speaker 2: What else is there to do? I guess you know
- 19:22Speaker 2: you know how bad it would look if you at
- 19:24Speaker 2: least didn't make a decent effort. I think that now
- 19:30Speaker 2: it requires a lot of athleticism. My cringe thinking what
- 19:34Speaker 2: I would have tried to do there, But I would
- 19:36Speaker 2: have put the effort in and you know I did.
- 19:39Speaker 2: You know, this is not about me, but I did
- 19:41Speaker 2: play right field, and I can just say that it
- 19:44Speaker 2: takes a nice combination of just about everything to be
- 19:47Speaker 2: able to actually pull it off. I don't know if
- 19:50Speaker 2: and you can't. You know, gay metrics are quant of
- 19:55Speaker 2: you know, who knows how many right fielders in the
- 19:56Speaker 2: game make that play in that moment and get that
- 19:59Speaker 2: kind of read because you got an excellent read on
- 20:01Speaker 2: the ball too that that was one of the biggest things.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Is left handed hitter too correct? It was Crawford. Crawford, Yeah,
- 20:08Speaker 2: and I think I think it's harder with a left
- 20:11Speaker 2: hander to get that read as well.
- 20:13Speaker 1: The polls balls hooking away from him. But he did
- 20:16Speaker 1: have a ball like that in Friday Night Scam which
- 20:18Speaker 1: he didn't catch, and it was very similar in trajectory
- 20:21Speaker 1: and I think not that he benefited from it, but
- 20:24Speaker 1: I think it's sort of he knows the way around
- 20:26Speaker 1: that corner and boy, that low wall. You think, okay,
- 20:29Speaker 1: maybe it's easier to rob a home run over a
- 20:31Speaker 1: lower wall. But to me, that's where you can really
- 20:34Speaker 1: risk injury. The risk factor goes up even higher. Is
- 20:37Speaker 1: Joe's a big six foot three, you know, dude, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: you know you go over a wall that low and
- 20:43Speaker 1: you could flip over and hit your head. So just
- 20:45Speaker 1: a great catch, a great game, and one that Angel
- 20:49Speaker 1: fans and Joe ad will remember for a long time.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Let's turn our attention to another pretty solid performer early
- 20:56Speaker 1: in the season for the Angels. That's Lee det Meers,
- 20:58Speaker 1: who is making that transition from the bullpen to the rotation.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Through six and two thirds scoreless innings with three hits,
- 21:08Speaker 1: four walks, four strikeouts Friday nighting on some Mariners, and
- 21:12Speaker 1: he did give up three and runs in his first
- 21:15Speaker 1: game in Houston, but he strikes out nine, walks none.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He just seems to be attacking guys, which he did
- 21:23Speaker 1: very well out of the bullpen last year. What are
- 21:25Speaker 1: you seeing from Deptvers right now? I know it's only
- 21:28Speaker 1: two starts, but is what you're seeing encouraging?
- 21:32Speaker 2: It is encouraging, trending in the right direction for sure.
- 21:36Speaker 2: This last start, especially the four strikeouts, surprised me a
- 21:40Speaker 2: little bit. It seemed like more they didn't really seem
- 21:45Speaker 2: to be onto him. I think that the big key
- 21:47Speaker 2: for Reed is going to be the pitch count. He
- 21:49Speaker 2: threw one hundred and four pitches, but he threw six
- 21:52Speaker 2: and two thirds, so that's really going to help. And
- 21:54Speaker 2: I think, you know, our bullpen is it's been quite
- 21:59Speaker 2: quite good, but it's going to be a difficult thing
- 22:05Speaker 2: to keep up, if you know. Unfortunately, today was another
- 22:08Speaker 2: short start for a young George Klassen, you know, debut
- 22:12Speaker 2: with very short notice. What can you really expect. I
- 22:16Speaker 2: really like his stuff. I'm high on him, and I
- 22:19Speaker 2: think that he will be just fine. Emmer's he through
- 22:21Speaker 2: sixty one percent strikes, so I think that's a metric
- 22:24Speaker 2: that I will personally be keeping track of because I
- 22:28Speaker 2: think for him, you know, I'm trying to get fifteen
- 22:30Speaker 2: pitches or less per inning would be a really good goal.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I think there's a couple guys that would benefit from that,
- 22:40Speaker 2: maybe another left handed starter as well, but easier said
- 22:45Speaker 2: than done. I think a lot of it comes down
- 22:47Speaker 2: to the misses with some of these guys, like Read
- 22:50Speaker 2: in particular, the misses that are really just not competitive,
- 22:54Speaker 2: that are balls out of the hand that the hitter
- 22:57Speaker 2: doesn't flinch on and it really doesn't set up the
- 22:59Speaker 2: pitch to follow. So the more that he can limit
- 23:02Speaker 2: those and that's what Soreano's doing such an excellent job.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Everything is presenting is about the same pitch. The tunneling
- 23:08Speaker 2: would be the word I used today, and then you know,
- 23:11Speaker 2: either it's upper nineties heat or a devastating knuckle curve.
- 23:17Speaker 2: And he's got four pitches now, Soreano that is and
- 23:21Speaker 2: read is pitching as well with a new changeup. He
- 23:24Speaker 2: I guess splirted with a split. Didn't really take to it.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Not everybody does. It's it's you know, requires a different
- 23:30Speaker 2: grip and a lot of times pitchers can tip that too,
- 23:33Speaker 2: and that's a big deal. When your glove gets bigger,
- 23:35Speaker 2: Biggley hitters will notice that quickly. So it looks like
- 23:39Speaker 2: just a little bit of a modified change up and
- 23:41Speaker 2: that's promising, so really nice to see. Uh do you
- 23:44Speaker 2: want to?
- 23:45Speaker 1: Khanowitz also, yeah, he looked okay the other night. What
- 23:49Speaker 1: were you seeing from him?
- 23:52Speaker 2: He's got a new repertoire Gooby covered it. He did
- 23:54Speaker 2: a nice rundown I think before his first start, made
- 23:57Speaker 2: some tweaks over the off season. He's more upright. He's
- 24:01Speaker 2: a tall guy.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I haven't seen any person very I walked by him today.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I didn't remember him being that tall, but yeah, he
- 24:06Speaker 1: is a super tall.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Guy, six seven, I think. Yeah. So I think he's
- 24:10Speaker 2: tried to improve really using that to his advantage, his extension.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I see far less of the sinker. He had a defined,
- 24:17Speaker 2: big sinker previous years. But I was kind of worried
- 24:21Speaker 2: because I did like that pitch a lot. But you know,
- 24:24Speaker 2: his new repertoire seems a little bit more for seam
- 24:28Speaker 2: and he's got, you know, pitching with a much better
- 24:30Speaker 2: breaking ball than he had previously. He had seven k's
- 24:34Speaker 2: and twelve whiffs. He was a guy that didn't generate
- 24:36Speaker 2: much swing and miss, and in today's game, it's all
- 24:39Speaker 2: the rage. I don't you know. I like contact for
- 24:42Speaker 2: a lot of guys, quick outs is good, but for him,
- 24:45Speaker 2: maybe there was too much contact, too much solid contact.
- 24:48Speaker 2: And this is good. Eighty six pitches, seventy percent strikes
- 24:51Speaker 2: in his outing, and he went pretty deep in the game,
- 24:54Speaker 2: at least for the modern game. Five and two thirds
- 24:57Speaker 2: is a good start.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Well, you mentioned the bullpen, and then one guy who's
- 25:01Speaker 1: really emerged there, converted starter Chase Silpseeth. He seems to
- 25:07Speaker 1: be really latching onto the stopper role, which, as we know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: the fireman stopper role, guys coming in with runners on.
- 25:15Speaker 1: It's you know, it's not the glamorous closer position, maybe
- 25:18Speaker 1: not even the setup guy, but it's a huge position
- 25:22Speaker 1: in any bullpen. He's pitched in six games already, hasn't
- 25:25Speaker 1: given up a run in four and third innings. He's
- 25:28Speaker 1: given up two hits, one walk, five strikeouts. It's I hate,
- 25:33Speaker 1: you know, you use the term bulldog. You don't want
- 25:36Speaker 1: to just throw it around that easily. But he seems
- 25:39Speaker 1: to have a little different mentality out there right now.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Is that what you're seeing?
- 25:43Speaker 2: Big time? Looks like a new guy, very aggressive. I
- 25:47Speaker 2: think he's always been somewhat of a high energy guy,
- 25:49Speaker 2: but maybe you know, if the results aren't there, it
- 25:53Speaker 2: doesn't always look that great, you know, but it'll be
- 25:57Speaker 2: out there. He's not he's not showbot. He's not good aggressiveness,
- 26:01Speaker 2: uh and good emotion. So you know, he was a
- 26:05Speaker 2: guy that I quite honestly, I didn't know if he
- 26:07Speaker 2: was a lot to make the team. And based on
- 26:10Speaker 2: previous years, he's more of a long relief kind of
- 26:12Speaker 2: mop up and I think, what was it opening days
- 26:16Speaker 2: pitching high leverage to Jordon Alvarez.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so.
- 26:21Speaker 2: This is huge for the team. I have to think
- 26:24Speaker 2: that either some work he did in the off season,
- 26:27Speaker 2: but more likely Mike Maddocks maybe was able to or
- 26:30Speaker 2: someone else. You know, maybe you could ask if you're there,
- 26:34Speaker 2: But you know, this is great for the club. If
- 26:37Speaker 2: he you know, another guy that capable of getting outs
- 26:39Speaker 2: and crunch time, that's that's a good thing. That's not
- 26:42Speaker 2: that's not a problem. So good for good for Chase.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Uh.
- 26:46Speaker 2: You know, I've liked his stuff all along. He was
- 26:48Speaker 2: kind of flirting around with starting and you know, didn't
- 26:51Speaker 2: have a defined role and struggled sent back down. You know,
- 26:54Speaker 2: I think it'd be great if he never went back.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Down and you're pick to click going into the isn't
- 27:00Speaker 1: as we all know, is Sam Bachman. Then, boy, he
- 27:02Speaker 1: looked dominant in the eighth inning today. He struck out
- 27:05Speaker 1: a guy with one hundred mile an hour fastball. I
- 27:08Speaker 1: think he made a little mistake with his second pitch.
- 27:12Speaker 1: He threw a slider that Rodriguez hit for the game time.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Hitting the ninth tough luck with cal Rawley with a
- 27:20Speaker 1: little blue DNK double down the left field line to
- 27:23Speaker 1: get in score and position to tie the game. But
- 27:26Speaker 1: you got to like what you're seeing out of this kid.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I don't you know, these roles are very fluid right now.
- 27:31Speaker 1: They're still waiting for Ben Joyce to come back. But
- 27:36Speaker 1: how you know, Sam Bachman seems to have really established
- 27:38Speaker 1: himself as well.
- 27:40Speaker 2: I've talked about Samy gonna think I'm a homer. For Sam,
- 27:43Speaker 2: that's going to happen. He will give up some runs,
- 27:47Speaker 2: but you know, he had one hundred and one today.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I think he did it on consecutive pitches, so that,
- 27:53Speaker 2: to me, he has to indicate that he's probably feeling
- 27:55Speaker 2: pretty good. He does have wipeout stuff. Here's you know,
- 27:58Speaker 2: if I have to assume it's max effort right now,
- 28:01Speaker 2: and with that, you know the command. Some guys do
- 28:06Speaker 2: benefit from the max effort. Their command actually gets better.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Some guys maybe a little of the opposite. I think
- 28:12Speaker 2: his command could be a little bit better. But when
- 28:14Speaker 2: you're throwing that hard with a wipeout slider, sometimes it
- 28:17Speaker 2: really doesn't matter. You're just looking for strikes. How about
- 28:20Speaker 2: Jordan Romano. You say, yeah, well there you go.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Well I did want to I did want to close
- 28:29Speaker 1: the show with the de facto closer. Yeah, he's with
- 28:35Speaker 1: four and two thirds innings in five games already. He
- 28:39Speaker 1: hasn't given up a run, seven strikeouts, two walks, three
- 28:43Speaker 1: for three and save opportunities. Now, his fastball, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 1: he was hurt for a couple of years. His fastball
- 28:49Speaker 1: is up around ninety five ninety six, not quite in
- 28:53Speaker 1: that ninety six ninety seven range that it was a
- 28:55Speaker 1: few years ago, but he seems to be pitching pretty
- 28:58Speaker 1: effectively with it and the slide. He's opponent Opposing hitters
- 29:03Speaker 1: are oh for eight in at bats ending in the slider.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So I mean he's basically a two pitch guy as
- 29:10Speaker 1: a closer. But you have to like what you're seeing
- 29:13Speaker 1: out of him right now.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Well, closers don't need three pitches. I remember a great
- 29:19Speaker 2: Angel closer maybe on that two team. I think he
- 29:21Speaker 2: lived off of you know, I showed me breaking ball,
- 29:24Speaker 2: but it was the old country hardball. But Romanoy, I promised,
- 29:31Speaker 2: I'm not going to say anything about a lack of
- 29:33Speaker 2: whatever in camp. But I didn't know what to expect
- 29:39Speaker 2: and you know, this guy is really impressed. He I
- 29:42Speaker 2: saw a note I think Wayne Rendezo mentioned Orgoobi, one
- 29:46Speaker 2: of the two, probably Wayne that Jordan indicated it feels
- 29:49Speaker 2: healthy for the first time in a long time, and
- 29:52Speaker 2: that's a big deal. His stuff. Okay, so he's not
- 29:54Speaker 2: throwing a hundred. I couldn't care less. That stuff looks
- 29:58Speaker 2: like it is playing. The thing is, the velocity is
- 30:02Speaker 2: only as relevant as how well you hide the ball,
- 30:04Speaker 2: and he does a very good job of hiding the ball.
- 30:07Speaker 2: It looks like hitters are not getting a good look,
- 30:09Speaker 2: and that slider is you know, everything is downhill, and
- 30:13Speaker 2: so hitters are having a tough time catching up to
- 30:16Speaker 2: the fastball. It looks like they're prone to cheating and
- 30:18Speaker 2: then they're just dead in the water. On the slider,
- 30:21Speaker 2: You're gonna see a lot of awkward swings and misses,
- 30:24Speaker 2: a lot of whiffs. He should really rack up punch
- 30:27Speaker 2: outs in a hurry. Keeping that up. I have a
- 30:30Speaker 2: couple more notes if we have a little sliver of time.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Logan o' hoppy. Really nice series behind the plate. He's
- 30:39Speaker 2: been exceptional on challenging pitches. His hitting is he's put
- 30:45Speaker 2: some together, some nice at bats together, some solid contact.
- 30:49Speaker 2: But what I really like about him is it's not
- 30:51Speaker 2: you know, if the hits aren't following, it doesn't seem
- 30:54Speaker 2: to be affecting the catching one bit. He's been on
- 30:56Speaker 2: the same page with all of these guys today. I'm
- 31:00Speaker 2: not sure anyone would have you gotten a lot more
- 31:02Speaker 2: out of you know, class was really amped up and
- 31:04Speaker 2: that's fine, but really nice job by by Logan this series,
- 31:09Speaker 2: so that that's very promising. And Steven Smith one of
- 31:12Speaker 2: our regular viewers. You know, he keeps me updated and
- 31:16Speaker 2: he ran a website and for a long time on
- 31:18Speaker 2: the Angels for I was there. Uh so three pitchers,
- 31:22Speaker 2: we're gonna get it in quick. Dylan Jordan pitching for
- 31:24Speaker 2: Ranch with Amonga Quakes. Five innings, pitch struck out eight,
- 31:28Speaker 2: three hits, sixty six percent strikes. He's got a real
- 31:31Speaker 2: crossfire delivery. I got a good look at some of
- 31:33Speaker 2: the video and a nasty slater. He looks very, very
- 31:36Speaker 2: tough to hit. He was a guy that slot or
- 31:38Speaker 2: signed for a million two or something, so overslot but
- 31:43Speaker 2: very promising. Arm I right, he looks like a nightmare
- 31:45Speaker 2: for right handed hitters.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 31:48Speaker 2: Trey Gregory Alford another guy that I think we signed
- 31:50Speaker 2: for overslot. I know we did. Actually he was up
- 31:54Speaker 2: to one hundred and one. He's got a huge fastball.
- 31:56Speaker 2: He through five innings zero runs. Basically everyone's giving up
- 32:00Speaker 2: zero run so far. Tyler Bremner, second overall pick last year,
- 32:04Speaker 2: debuted three innings, pitch six, k's ninety six, ninety eight,
- 32:08Speaker 2: touch ninety nine. It's also got the plus change up
- 32:10Speaker 2: so that Tri City team is stocked with flamethrowers. Rancho's
- 32:14Speaker 2: got a bunch of studs, and you know that's going
- 32:17Speaker 2: to be really interesting in the trash pandas you need
- 32:19Speaker 2: to look into that a little bit more, maybe a
- 32:21Speaker 2: little bit lighter there. And salt Lake, you're gonna mention
- 32:25Speaker 2: it friend of mine, Trey Mancini with a homer today
- 32:28Speaker 2: three eighteen average nine one hundred ops. Christian Morrison playing
- 32:32Speaker 2: third base as well. And I need one last answer
- 32:35Speaker 2: out of you. What you know you've done this a
- 32:38Speaker 2: long time. What did you think of Randy Rosaran's throw
- 32:41Speaker 2: at there at the end to try and on Nolan's sackfly.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Did that look a good throw to you?
- 32:48Speaker 1: It was not a good throw and it tailed immensely
- 32:50Speaker 1: up the third base side, and Tory Munter talked about
- 32:53Speaker 1: this on our show the other day. If you want
- 32:55Speaker 1: to make an accurate show throw, it's better to one
- 32:58Speaker 1: hop it.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Now.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Granted he had the benefit of playing on that Minnesota
- 33:02Speaker 1: astrotur from the Metro Dome all those years, and you're
- 33:04Speaker 1: going to get a truer hot, but you just don't
- 33:07Speaker 1: give yourself a real chance when you airmail the throw
- 33:10Speaker 1: like he did. I haven't seen him a ton in
- 33:13Speaker 1: the outfield. I don't know if his throw naturally tails
- 33:15Speaker 1: as much as it did, but.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Arm that was. That was a dying quail that Yeah,
- 33:23Speaker 2: you know, anybody you and I would have scored.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Yeah, Shanwell's ball was medium left field at best. Yeah,
- 33:32Speaker 1: it was almost you could almost call a shallow to medium.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I thought when he caught the ball, he definitely had
- 33:38Speaker 1: a chance. And then as the ball's coming in and
- 33:40Speaker 1: we're kind of right behind that, you know, the third baseline,
- 33:44Speaker 1: and you could see it just go up and up
- 33:46Speaker 1: and up, and Riley had I think he got a
- 33:48Speaker 1: glove on it, but he had no chance of tagging.
- 33:50Speaker 1: So heck of a finish.
- 33:52Speaker 2: One last thing, why has low been removed late? In
- 33:55Speaker 2: the game. Do we know that.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I think they just like, yeah, they liked Tiodo's see
- 34:00Speaker 1: you out there a little more defensively. And of course
- 34:03Speaker 1: today Mike left the game in the eighth inning, so
- 34:05Speaker 1: but I think they removed Low before that. So they've
- 34:08Speaker 1: been doing you know, Cris been doing that. He's been
