- 0:54Speaker 2: dot Com. So head over there and assess all of
- 0:57Speaker 2: your whitetail needs. And I tell you, I've got Mark
- 1:00Speaker 2: Kenyan on the phone right now and we are we
- 1:04Speaker 2: are not in need too much at the moment. We
- 1:06Speaker 2: are riding high on some wattail high because it's opening
- 1:09Speaker 2: day in Michigan, which is like a state holiday.
- 1:11Speaker 3: From what I understand, right man, it doesn't get any better.
- 1:15Speaker 4: It's a glorious day.
- 1:17Speaker 3: We were listening this morning. Do you know the album
- 1:22Speaker 3: The Bone Collector? Oh, oh yeah, for sure.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I don't listen to it often, but you know it's
- 1:26Speaker 2: like you whip it out every once in a while
- 1:28Speaker 2: when you really need it.
- 1:29Speaker 3: You know, well, this is that.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Time of year. One of the songs on that album's
- 1:34Speaker 4: Opening Day, and so we were jamming to Opening Day
- 1:37Speaker 4: on the.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Radio this morning. When I was taking my son to school.
- 1:41Speaker 4: We listened to some Fred Baher, we listened to some
- 1:44Speaker 4: thirty point Buck.
- 1:45Speaker 3: We bust out all the hits.
- 1:47Speaker 2: That's what I was wondering if you did a thirty
- 1:48Speaker 2: point buck. You know, that's not a thing here at all,
- 1:51Speaker 2: but I appreciate it from afar.
- 1:53Speaker 4: You know, it's not that far. It's like a Northern
- 1:56Speaker 4: version of a Texas.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Bill billy kind of song.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I feel like it's right up right up your guys.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but but yeah, we're uh, we're all excited here.
- 2:06Speaker 3: One of my.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Best buddies, his son killed his first buck with a
- 2:11Speaker 4: bow all on his zone this morning. So super exciting
- 2:16Speaker 4: to see that. I'm getting ready to head out here
- 2:19Speaker 4: in a couple of hours. So I'm excited. And it's just,
- 2:22Speaker 4: you know, it's the beginning of the season. You're just
- 2:25Speaker 4: so full of hope and optimism and excitement. There's nothing
- 2:28Speaker 4: but good stuff ahead as far as I can think.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Of at the moment right, none of the none of
- 2:33Speaker 4: the tough realities have shown their ugly faces yet. So yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 4: I'm riding high. Yeah that's cool, dude, that's exciting. Do
- 2:40Speaker 4: you have a Mark Kenyon Worthy plan for opening day?
- 2:45Speaker 3: I would say I.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Do have a Mark kenyan Worthy playing You're a planned
- 2:49Speaker 4: out guy, That's that's That's what I'm you know, kind
- 2:52Speaker 4: of referencing here.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I feel as if you are in the Deerwoods.
- 2:57Speaker 2: You're conservative by nature, and so I think, you know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: knowing you in your past, if you didn't have a
- 3:03Speaker 2: good plan or a good win, you would you would
- 3:05Speaker 2: very well glass or observation sit for the evening.
- 3:08Speaker 3: But do you feel like you're going to be in
- 3:09Speaker 3: the chips?
- 3:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got I've got a pretty decent shot tonight.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I'm not going in with like the Shike's level of confidence.
- 3:20Speaker 4: Like there's sometimes when you go in and like just
- 3:23Speaker 4: walking in and you're like, oh my goodness, this is
- 3:25Speaker 4: gonna be the night. But it's still pretty darn good.
- 3:30Speaker 4: So I'll try not to bore you with too much
- 3:34Speaker 4: of this. But the short version of the story is
- 3:37Speaker 4: that one of my two main target bucks in southern
- 3:41Speaker 4: Michigan has been pretty active the last seven to ten days.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I was able to do some glassing, and on three
- 3:50Speaker 4: different occasions over the last it's like seven.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Eight nine days something like that, in that window, three different.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Times I've seen him on his feet in daylight on
- 4:01Speaker 4: a similar basic track of movement. And what these deer
- 4:06Speaker 4: are doing right now in my area at least, is
- 4:08Speaker 4: that they are shifting off of the green soybean fields
- 4:11Speaker 4: that have just recently defoliated and are mostly all dried
- 4:14Speaker 4: down now, and they've shifted to different food sources. There's
- 4:18Speaker 4: some hitting acorns, but there's not a huge mass crop
- 4:21Speaker 4: at least in my zone from what I've seen, nothing
- 4:24Speaker 4: like what we had last year. So at least where
- 4:28Speaker 4: I'm at, the big new local food source that a
- 4:31Speaker 4: lot of deer turned their attention to is actually cover crops.
- 4:35Speaker 4: There's a number of fields in my region that have
- 4:40Speaker 4: planted cover crops after wheat, and so that cover crop
- 4:43Speaker 4: is like oats and rye and various brassicas and so
- 4:47Speaker 4: it's a green food plot basically. So I've got like
- 4:51Speaker 4: a twenty five acre green food plot on one of
- 4:54Speaker 4: the neighboring farms next to one of the spots that
- 4:57Speaker 4: I can hunt.
- 4:59Speaker 3: So that's been pulling a lot of deer.
- 5:01Speaker 4: So this particular buck that I'm gonna be hunting to
- 5:05Speaker 4: night has shifted off of the beans and I think
- 5:07Speaker 4: is keying on mostly that cover crop, and I've got
- 5:12Speaker 4: a couple spots I can intercept him from one of
- 5:15Speaker 4: his main bedding zones heading towards that cover crop.
- 5:19Speaker 3: One of those spots is a.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Little kind of Heidi whole food plot that I was
- 5:23Speaker 4: able to plant, and that is similar to what's in
- 5:26Speaker 4: the cover crop.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But just a little bit more hidden away and a
- 5:28Speaker 3: little closer to betting. And so one of those.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Nights that I caught him moving like five six days ago,
- 5:34Speaker 4: he hit the food plot, first made a scrape, and
- 5:37Speaker 4: then headed off towards the big destination. So with the
- 5:41Speaker 4: wind we've got tonight, that's the only spy I can
- 5:43Speaker 4: safely hunt and be in a pretty good spot. So
- 5:46Speaker 4: I'm hunting that little Heidi hole plot tight to one
- 5:49Speaker 4: of his bedrooms.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It's kind of on the way to the bigger destination.
- 5:52Speaker 4: So it's got all the markings of a standard high
- 5:56Speaker 4: quality early season hunt.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I can get in there without anything.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Knowing I'm going to be there and get out pretty
- 6:01Speaker 4: safely without anything knowing I was there. There's a scrape
- 6:05Speaker 4: tree within range of this spot.
- 6:08Speaker 3: There's a actually the tree.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Stand I'm in is in a white oak that does
- 6:13Speaker 4: have some acorns, so there will be some acorns right
- 6:17Speaker 4: next to me. So there's a bunch of good looking
- 6:19Speaker 4: things in decent weather. It's not super hot, it's not
- 6:22Speaker 4: super cool. It's kind of right around average. But there's
- 6:25Speaker 4: a cool front hitting tonight, and temperatures tomorrow morning will
- 6:31Speaker 4: be like fifteen degrees cooler than they were this morning,
- 6:35Speaker 4: So you know, there's a little bit of that environmental
- 6:38Speaker 4: thing that might get a move just a tiny bit more.
- 6:41Speaker 3: So all I has to say, I'm excited. I feel
- 6:45Speaker 3: pretty decent. I think there's a pretty decent chance that
- 6:48Speaker 3: he could come through there. Yeah that's cool, man.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Do you feel how much let me ask this differently,
- 6:54Speaker 2: how much emphasis do you put on moon phases?
- 6:56Speaker 3: Mark? Almost none? Yeah, almost none. I would say I
- 7:03Speaker 3: would say close to zero.
- 7:06Speaker 4: The only time I'll look at it, you know, And
- 7:08Speaker 4: I've got somebodies who are red moon obsessed, and so
- 7:12Speaker 4: they're always saying, oh, it's red Moon's red moon.
- 7:15Speaker 3: So if ever, like a red moon, or if.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Ever the rising and setting moon times coincide with the
- 7:22Speaker 4: first hour or last hour of daylight, which is supposed
- 7:24Speaker 4: to be a good trigger. Whenever that happens, and I'm hunting,
- 7:28Speaker 4: I'm always thinking, well, hey, the moon's good, maybe that'll.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Mean today's the day.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It's only a factor for optimism, right exactly, Yeah, exactly.
- 7:36Speaker 3: But I don't take it into account anyone.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it would it be in a new moon
- 7:40Speaker 2: right now, I'm like you, I don't actually think about
- 7:45Speaker 2: the red moon stuff too much, but I'll like new
- 7:48Speaker 2: moons and it's never going to keep me from hunting.
- 7:50Speaker 2: But if there's no moon at not, it's just like
- 7:54Speaker 2: what you were saying, where it's like, oh, well, there's
- 7:56Speaker 2: a chance they get on their feet a little bit
- 7:57Speaker 2: earlier because they know that, you know, they're their patterns
- 8:01Speaker 2: are such that they don't have as much light at
- 8:04Speaker 2: not or whatever. You know, you can always kind of
- 8:06Speaker 2: come up with a good reason to go. And so
- 8:08Speaker 2: that's kind of what I'm looking at. And there's others,
- 8:10Speaker 2: you know, the guys that we've talked to this week
- 8:12Speaker 2: are kind of thinking that too. Now, when you're looking
- 8:14Speaker 2: at your set up to not I know you being analytical,
- 8:18Speaker 2: you've thought about the liabilities. What's your big liability tonight
- 8:22Speaker 2: with this sit That's.
- 8:24Speaker 4: A great question, and that is a very important thing
- 8:27Speaker 4: to think about, especially early in the year, because you know,
- 8:31Speaker 4: every time you hunt your roll in the dice and
- 8:34Speaker 4: you've got the possible chances of a reward, it's like
- 8:37Speaker 4: how likely it is that you're gonna kill something? And
- 8:40Speaker 4: you have to balance that or compare that to what's
- 8:44Speaker 4: your chance of risk? Like what's the downside? What are
- 8:46Speaker 4: the liabilities that you're talking about? And if you press
- 8:50Speaker 4: in and do something where it's low odds of success
- 8:53Speaker 4: but very high odds of something bad happening, and by
- 8:56Speaker 4: bad happening, I mean educating deer, well, then you might
- 9:00Speaker 4: end up blowing your future opportunities when there really was
- 9:02Speaker 4: a chance to get a crack at the deer you're after.
- 9:04Speaker 4: And so my liabilities tonight are pretty well accounted for,
- 9:10Speaker 4: which is, you know by plan. Two things could be
- 9:16Speaker 4: a problem for me. One would be if the wind
- 9:19Speaker 4: direction was different than what it is. So I always
- 9:22Speaker 4: like to hunt opening night almost never. I almost never
- 9:25Speaker 4: pass on Opening night just because these deer haven't been
- 9:27Speaker 4: pressured yet.
- 9:28Speaker 3: There's still a little bit on the summer pattern.
- 9:30Speaker 4: But if I had a wind direction that was pressing
- 9:34Speaker 4: into these betting areas that I'm hunting, you just can't
- 9:37Speaker 4: do it because you're just not going to have any
- 9:40Speaker 4: deer come out, or at least not the deer you're
- 9:42Speaker 4: after if they're winding you, and so tonight, if the
- 9:45Speaker 4: wind switched on me, that would be a major issue.
- 9:48Speaker 4: But as of right now, I have almost as good
- 9:51Speaker 4: of a wind as I could ask for hunt this spot,
- 9:54Speaker 4: a very safe wind that blows back into an area
- 9:57Speaker 4: where almost there's never deer, almost.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Never coming from that area.
- 10:01Speaker 4: They're not deer bedded there, so it's a pretty safe wind.
- 10:04Speaker 4: But that if it changed, that would be a liability.
- 10:07Speaker 4: And then the second thing is my exit. My entry
- 10:11Speaker 4: is rock solid.
- 10:13Speaker 3: I don't need to go through anything that will have deer.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I shouldn't spook any deer unless I get there super
- 10:18Speaker 4: late and there's already deer in the food, but that
- 10:21Speaker 4: won't be the case. The exit is the situation that
- 10:25Speaker 4: can be tricky, and I'm lucky enough that I have
- 10:30Speaker 4: this particular place I'm hunting tonight is close enough to
- 10:33Speaker 4: where I live that I can get my wife on
- 10:37Speaker 4: some evenings to drive out and clear any deer that
- 10:41Speaker 4: might be out in the neighboring fields and kind.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Of make sure it's safe.
- 10:44Speaker 4: So she can drive out in the truck if the
- 10:45Speaker 4: fields are if the fields are picked dirty, or she
- 10:51Speaker 4: can hop in the canam and drive that down and
- 10:54Speaker 4: sometimes pick me up in that. And so tonight is
- 10:57Speaker 4: actually a night where I'm going to use use my uh,
- 11:01Speaker 4: use my brownie points and get her to drive all
- 11:04Speaker 4: the way on the can m so that basically I
- 11:07Speaker 4: can get out of there without any deer being busted
- 11:10Speaker 4: by me climbing out of the tree and walking out
- 11:13Speaker 4: of there.
- 11:13Speaker 3: So it's a luxury to have a spot this close
- 11:16Speaker 3: enough and a.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Wife who's who's kind enough and understanding enough to sacrifice
- 11:20Speaker 4: some over evening to do me that doing that solid.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's nice man.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You know. Early on in the Element podcast catalog, we
- 11:28Speaker 2: had an episode called burning Brownie points, and we assessed
- 11:31Speaker 2: that you have so many and they, uh, they're kind
- 11:37Speaker 2: of like some you know, like savings accounts or or
- 11:41Speaker 2: stuff like that, where like they they don't roll over
- 11:44Speaker 2: all the time.
- 11:45Speaker 3: So like you gotta use them wisely.
- 11:47Speaker 2: But also you can't like accumulate too many and then uh,
- 11:51Speaker 2: some days you burn more than others for the same tasks.
- 11:54Speaker 2: So you know, I can assume you've assessed that as well.
- 11:58Speaker 2: With this brownie burning, you're about to do not and
- 12:01Speaker 2: it's going to be totally worth it. And I think it's.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Funny, you know, like back before I used to hunt
- 12:08Speaker 4: the same general area, remember the first like five to seven,
- 12:12Speaker 4: I don't know how many years, a decent number of
- 12:14Speaker 4: years I hunted this area and I would just walk
- 12:17Speaker 4: in and out to the road on foot, and it
- 12:23Speaker 4: was always hard to get out of there without spooking deer.
- 12:25Speaker 4: And then when I finally realized, oh, you know what,
- 12:28Speaker 4: if I could just get like a friend who's.
- 12:30Speaker 5: In the area, or Kylie.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Or if I can convince someone to come out here
- 12:34Speaker 4: and how to pick me up or clear the field
- 12:36Speaker 4: of the vehicle or something, that would probably be a
- 12:40Speaker 4: significantly less you know, damaging exit. And since we started
- 12:44Speaker 4: doing that, my success in my settings of mature bucks
- 12:48Speaker 4: in that area.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Have gone up dramatically.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Like that was one thing that made a huge difference
- 12:53Speaker 4: over the last I don't know, seven to ten years probably.
- 12:57Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 12:58Speaker 2: It's good to see things like that, like you used
- 12:59Speaker 2: to see the return on that you know, and be
- 13:02Speaker 2: able to make a actual deduction.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Oh, this has a direct impact.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I just really feel like they're much more forgiving
- 13:12Speaker 4: of a vehicle than a person. And so in spots
- 13:16Speaker 4: where there's not a great way to walk out without.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Something seeing you.
- 13:19Speaker 4: In this particular area, that's very tricky to get out
- 13:22Speaker 4: because there's so much open croft field and where I
- 13:25Speaker 4: have to access from the road is on the opposite
- 13:27Speaker 4: side of those open fields.
- 13:30Speaker 3: If stuff's picked or open, you're very exposed.
- 13:33Speaker 4: So on the nights when I have to go on
- 13:35Speaker 4: there for an evening hunt in one of these places,
- 13:37Speaker 4: it's it's it's very.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Helpful when I can get that ride. Yeah, very nice, dude.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Well, it sounds like you've got the pieces in place
- 13:44Speaker 2: to at least having good hunt, and I hope you
- 13:47Speaker 2: find success.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Man.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I think you kind of have a little bit of
- 13:50Speaker 2: a tradition of at least coming close early. It was
- 13:53Speaker 2: it last year or the year before you killed a
- 13:55Speaker 2: deer pretty early on. I can't remember, for.
- 13:58Speaker 4: I almost always see a good one one and yet
- 14:01Speaker 4: two years ago I killed one of my targets opening
- 14:04Speaker 4: nights last night. I saw actually the last night, the
- 14:09Speaker 4: Buckham after tonight. I had an encounter with him last
- 14:13Speaker 4: year on the second day of the season. So so yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 4: there's definitely there's been a lot of good sightings, close calls,
- 14:22Speaker 4: a couple of kills. So I always feel very good
- 14:25Speaker 4: those first couple of days of the season here in Michigan.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So I said, awesome, man, Well, I hope you find
- 14:31Speaker 2: some good success. It sounds like around the country that
- 14:34Speaker 2: optimism is high as well. I got a lot of
- 14:36Speaker 2: states opening up right now, so everybody's kind of like, hey,
- 14:39Speaker 2: it's gonna be an awesome week.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Like I said, optimism is high the first day of
- 14:43Speaker 3: the season.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Hey, dude, optimism kills deer. Absolutely. You know, if you're
- 14:47Speaker 2: feeling pessimistic and you this is for lots of things
- 14:51Speaker 2: in life, right, But take a page out of Tony's
- 14:56Speaker 2: book here, But like, if you're pessimistic in the weight room,
- 14:58Speaker 2: or you're pessimistic, know with your job or with deer hunting,
- 15:02Speaker 2: or in your marriage, it's not going to produce good fruit, right,
- 15:06Speaker 2: But not saying that optimism is going to result in success,
- 15:11Speaker 2: but you're you're taking steps in the right direction.
- 15:14Speaker 3: I one a grief makes makes a big difference. Man.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Well, let's uh, let's get the reports from the guys
- 15:20Speaker 2: around the countries.
- 15:21Speaker 3: That sound good, that sounds great. I'm excited to hear them.
- 15:24Speaker 2: On the phone. Now, I've got a local guy here
- 15:27Speaker 2: from Texas. Colton Roberts had him some opening day success. Dude,
- 15:31Speaker 2: congrats on the big buck.
- 15:34Speaker 6: Thank you, Casey.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, man, for sure, that's a big deal because, in
- 15:39Speaker 2: my opinion, October in Texas is tough, and so you
- 15:42Speaker 2: probably had to have something figured out. What was like
- 15:45Speaker 2: your major tactic on trying to get this deer down.
- 15:49Speaker 7: Well, I had an account encounter with him last year.
- 15:54Speaker 6: I think I did. I'm pretty sure.
- 15:56Speaker 7: And I kind of just went in blind having an idea.
- 15:58Speaker 7: That afternoon, me and my dad and I didn't like
- 16:01Speaker 7: what I see in and I was about to.
- 16:03Speaker 6: Head out and saw a.
- 16:05Speaker 7: Little patch of white oaks and had some caps popped
- 16:08Speaker 7: off the acorns, and I thought, just thick enough, and
- 16:12Speaker 7: there was a bunch of beauty berry there and we just.
- 16:16Speaker 6: Hung up right there and he come out about six o'clock.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Man, that's early too. You must have been pretty close
- 16:23Speaker 2: to his bed. I'd imagine I had to have been. Yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 2: did he come in and browse or was he just
- 16:27Speaker 2: walking the trail?
- 16:30Speaker 7: The first thing I heard was him browsing on a
- 16:32Speaker 7: beauty berry and I glanced over and I thought it
- 16:35Speaker 7: was a dough. And then whenever he moved his head,
- 16:38Speaker 7: the whole beautyberry tree moved and.
- 16:40Speaker 6: I went home.
- 16:41Speaker 8: Not a dough.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Things are getting a little more interested real quick.
- 16:44Speaker 7: Right, And I mean he hit a dead load to
- 16:47Speaker 7: that acre tree, Like I'm a loaw.
- 16:51Speaker 3: How about that? I bet you.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I've been in a little scouting too, and maybe you
- 16:55Speaker 2: can confirm this, but there's not many trees dropping yet,
- 16:57Speaker 2: so you probably found the few tree.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Yes.
- 17:01Speaker 7: I've always heard feed trees and I have had trouble
- 17:06Speaker 7: finding them anywhere.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Like it's just aprons here, aprons there.
- 17:12Speaker 7: And when I saw those green white oaks on the
- 17:17Speaker 7: ground with the caps popped.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Off of them, I was like, well, they're hitting them.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's interesting that you could recognize the detail of
- 17:25Speaker 2: the caps popped off.
- 17:26Speaker 3: You know, that's pretty cool.
- 17:27Speaker 2: So when you found that tree, did you set up
- 17:31Speaker 2: for the wind to be perfect for you? Do you
- 17:33Speaker 2: set up on a just off or how did you
- 17:35Speaker 2: you know, negotiate situation.
- 17:37Speaker 6: It was the wind was coming north, I think, and.
- 17:42Speaker 7: It was a cut that went down into a little
- 17:45Speaker 7: creek and these weren't a flat.
- 17:46Speaker 6: Right before you dropping the cree.
- 17:48Speaker 7: And the wind was out of the north, so it
- 17:51Speaker 7: was in my face coming away from that cut. But
- 17:55Speaker 7: I knew when it got dark, it would start dropping
- 17:57Speaker 7: down in that cut if that wind died any and
- 18:00Speaker 7: it when dark started rolling around in the shade started
- 18:03Speaker 7: coming it, it did start dropping and I was just
- 18:05Speaker 7: dropping milkweed every five minutes, but it was it would
- 18:09Speaker 7: drop down in there, but then it would float to
- 18:11Speaker 7: the creek, and I, for some reason I had a.
- 18:13Speaker 6: Feeling they might come off the top.
- 18:16Speaker 7: And as long as I could get a shot before
- 18:20Speaker 7: he got to it.
- 18:21Speaker 6: And he did. He was in a dead run and.
- 18:23Speaker 7: Then coming to that tree and he hit that thermal
- 18:26Speaker 7: and just locked up, and I already had my pen
- 18:28Speaker 7: on him.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Too late, huh. It was yeah, that's awesome, man, So
- 18:35Speaker 2: he said earlier. The historical dad, you know, played a
- 18:38Speaker 2: little bit of a factor into this.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Did you look at the moon at all thinking about this?
- 18:44Speaker 3: You know?
- 18:44Speaker 2: He came in early on an evening and it just
- 18:46Speaker 2: so happens a week in a new moon period. Do
- 18:48Speaker 2: you feel like that correlated?
- 18:51Speaker 6: Well, I'm sure it probably did. I've never I always.
- 18:55Speaker 7: Think about looking at the moon, and then when it
- 18:57Speaker 7: comes time to go, I just got I mean, it
- 19:01Speaker 7: don't really matter what the moon's.
- 19:02Speaker 6: Doing, and I have time off, I'm gonna go.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yep, though, that's how you kill big deer man. That's
- 19:07Speaker 2: I think that you could talk yourself out of hunting
- 19:10Speaker 2: a whole lot. But it doesn't take too much taught
- 19:12Speaker 2: me into it, you know what I mean?
- 19:13Speaker 7: No, not really Like if I get home from work
- 19:16Speaker 7: and I got two hours of the daylight, I'm going
- 19:18Speaker 7: to try.
- 19:19Speaker 2: To go, Yes, sir, I can understand that completely. So
- 19:22Speaker 2: looking forward here, we got cooler tempts than some years,
- 19:27Speaker 2: but it's a real stagnant period. There's no weather systems
- 19:30Speaker 2: at least on the ten day forecast. Do you think
- 19:32Speaker 2: that we're going to have kind of similar buck moving
- 19:35Speaker 2: over the next week or do you feel like it's
- 19:37Speaker 2: gonna kind of peter out after this initial kind of
- 19:40Speaker 2: cool spell we had in early October.
- 19:43Speaker 6: I think it'll be all right.
- 19:45Speaker 7: I mean, I think temperature is gonna be the low nineties,
- 19:48Speaker 7: mid eighties coming up, and to me, eighties in Texas
- 19:54Speaker 7: is pretty mild.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yeah, for this part, I would think for sure we
- 19:59Speaker 2: can see eighties in December, right right.
- 20:03Speaker 7: I just don't think it bothers them much down here. Yeah,
- 20:06Speaker 7: they're just gonna keep doing what they've been doing.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I agree.
- 20:09Speaker 2: So if you had to look at the next week
- 20:11Speaker 2: and ranking on a scale of one to ten, what
- 20:13Speaker 2: would you give it?
- 20:16Speaker 4: Five?
- 20:17Speaker 3: That's pretty good for early season. I'd say I would
- 20:20Speaker 3: give it five.
- 20:21Speaker 7: Like the only thing I've seen influence so much, like
- 20:24Speaker 7: the Weather's not a big deals pressure around where I'm at.
- 20:30Speaker 2: So it's uh, you know, honestly, looking at it being
- 20:33Speaker 2: opening weekend that just happened, there's a chance that it
- 20:37Speaker 2: might even get a little bit better. Guys kind of
- 20:38Speaker 2: get that Russ knocked off and then they say, Okay,
- 20:40Speaker 2: it's not November yet, you know, So you could be
- 20:42Speaker 2: looking even at the mid Octobers is the time when
- 20:44Speaker 2: the pressure lets up?
- 20:46Speaker 6: Oh they do. I guarantee it. There won't be shoot
- 20:50Speaker 6: next weekend.
- 20:51Speaker 7: There might not be four cars on that whole seventeen
- 20:54Speaker 7: thousand acres.
- 20:57Speaker 2: Yep, YEP makes a difference, man, for sure. Well, hey,
- 20:59Speaker 2: do you can grats on me? Was that opening day
- 21:02Speaker 2: or or opening weekend?
- 21:03Speaker 3: Opening?
- 21:05Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 21:05Speaker 4: Way to go, man, Well, I hope you uh uh
- 21:08Speaker 4: can kind of regroup each of some backstraps and figure
- 21:11Speaker 4: out another deer to shoot somewhere.
- 21:13Speaker 6: And I'm gonna try to.
- 21:15Speaker 3: This is my good buddy Reed struggle.
- 21:18Speaker 2: He is in the tri state area of Ohio, Kentucky
- 21:21Speaker 2: and Indiana. But you're pumped about your Indiana season about
- 21:24Speaker 2: to open, right man.
- 21:25Speaker 9: Yes, sir Todaymber one. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 21:29Speaker 3: I didn't I'd go work a little bit this morning.
- 21:31Speaker 9: So, uh, I mean the wife, My wife is hunting
- 21:33Speaker 9: for her first year season ever, So her and I
- 21:37Speaker 9: are going to be hunting this evening, and uh it
- 21:40Speaker 9: should be should be good. We finally have a good
- 21:43Speaker 9: solid wind for where we're gonna be set up tonight.
- 21:45Speaker 3: We have east winds for like a week and a half.
- 21:48Speaker 9: It's really weird with you know, Hurricane Helen, and uh
- 21:51Speaker 9: but yeah, we're we're really excited for time. Got a
- 21:53Speaker 9: north northwest wind and should should set up really good.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Gotcha.
- 21:57Speaker 2: So earlier off air, we were talking about food plots
- 22:00Speaker 2: a little bit is that are you kind of manicuring
- 22:02Speaker 2: food plots and getting ready to go or kind of
- 22:05Speaker 2: what does what your setup look like for a preparation?
- 22:07Speaker 9: Absolutely?
- 22:08Speaker 3: Absolutely, yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 9: So I like you said, I'm Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana. My
- 22:13Speaker 9: private properties are Ohio and Indiana, and I've got food
- 22:16Speaker 9: plots at both.
- 22:18Speaker 3: I planted some oats land we had that heleen.
- 22:21Speaker 9: Hit and from within two or three days, my oats
- 22:24Speaker 9: have grown five inches.
- 22:26Speaker 3: It is the craziest thing in the world.
- 22:28Speaker 9: Turnip's blowing up, right, is blowing up because we had
- 22:30Speaker 9: that drought and all that and everything. Yeah, but yeah,
- 22:33Speaker 9: so tonight we're actually going to be setting up. We
- 22:36Speaker 9: did did a little deal with our farmer that they
- 22:40Speaker 9: left some corn standing for us, nice and which is
- 22:43Speaker 9: great cover. So we're actually going to be doing a
- 22:46Speaker 9: little bit of We're going to be in the standing corn.
- 22:50Speaker 9: They left about fifteen rows on the edge of this field,
- 22:52Speaker 9: so we're gonna make us a little blond in the
- 22:55Speaker 9: standing corn, get a couple of rows back, and just
- 22:58Speaker 9: kind of PLoP down in the middle of the corn stalks.
- 23:00Speaker 9: But it should be a pretty cool hunt, kind of
- 23:02Speaker 9: kind of old school little Dan Fitzgerald style.
- 23:07Speaker 3: The videos of my dude, Dan the Man.
- 23:10Speaker 5: Yeah, it could be, it could be really cool.
- 23:11Speaker 9: I'd love to shoot one in the in the corn
- 23:13Speaker 9: stalks like that, you know, early October.
- 23:15Speaker 4: So you got off the camera data there or just
- 23:17Speaker 4: knowing that's a good spot.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Or what it looks like. It's a it's a historical spot.
- 23:22Speaker 3: My little brother.
- 23:22Speaker 9: Actually just killed a buck out of there on Saturday.
- 23:26Speaker 3: And the youth opener a nice, nice.
- 23:29Speaker 9: Eight point good mass uh, you know, around one twenty,
- 23:31Speaker 9: so we have a lot of deer down in there.
- 23:33Speaker 9: They saw twenty deer that morning in the first ten minutes.
- 23:36Speaker 9: He killed his bucks seven minutes in an open day.
- 23:39Speaker 9: It's we call it the Cethro Special. It's just kind
- 23:41Speaker 9: of what he does. But anyways, Yeah, so I've been
- 23:47Speaker 9: running cameras all summer and I run mock scrapes all
- 23:51Speaker 9: summer long, and I have doze and bucks hitting these
- 23:54Speaker 9: mock scrapes from June to now.
- 23:57Speaker 3: So that's what I've been monitoring.
- 23:59Speaker 9: The there's a couple really nice there's a really nice
- 24:02Speaker 9: a point that we're kind of trying to key in
- 24:04Speaker 9: on him.
- 24:04Speaker 3: I got him up on the top of my folks,
- 24:06Speaker 3: up on top.
- 24:07Speaker 9: Of the ridges and then it's kind of a valley
- 24:09Speaker 9: down on the bottom where the where the ag is
- 24:11Speaker 9: and you've got a nice river right there, and uh,
- 24:14Speaker 9: we're hoping to catch them this evening coming to feed.
- 24:18Speaker 3: And that's right now. It is so interesting. They've been
- 24:21Speaker 3: pulling ag early, really early this year. It's like two
- 24:24Speaker 3: three weeks early.
- 24:25Speaker 9: So they're gonna be in those ag fields right now
- 24:29Speaker 9: specifically because they just pulled the ag and then once
- 24:33Speaker 9: they're going to start transitioning out of that into your
- 24:36Speaker 9: acorns and leaves dropping and and you know, but there's
- 24:40Speaker 9: just there's a lot of germination going on right now
- 24:43Speaker 9: from the amount of rain we've had, so just that
- 24:45Speaker 9: that's kind of the pattern we're on, you know, with
- 24:47Speaker 9: with having an ag and stant literally standing corn.
- 24:50Speaker 4: So you feel like the new moon plays a factor
- 24:53Speaker 4: in deer movement. You know, there's no moon at night
- 24:55Speaker 4: at all.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Sudden, do you feel like you're going to see more uh,
- 24:58Speaker 2: you know, evening daylight activity.
- 25:00Speaker 9: Absolutely, which we've noticed lately with that heleen when it hit.
- 25:05Speaker 9: You know, there's some alfalfa fields around me and we're
- 25:07Speaker 9: seeing deer in the field around five o'clock, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 9: it's getting dark at seven thirty, and then it's pretty early.
- 25:13Speaker 9: I saw a couple of mature bucks out in that
- 25:16Speaker 9: alfalfa at five o'clock.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I mean, you know, that could have played a little
- 25:19Speaker 3: role with with Helene hitting and whatnot, but definitely.
- 25:22Speaker 9: And then so we also right now we have that
- 25:25Speaker 9: really really low parametric pressure for about a week with
- 25:29Speaker 9: you know, and like I said, that wind switching, it's
- 25:32Speaker 9: starting to phase out. So I'm really expecting some better
- 25:37Speaker 9: hunting later in this week. The you know, we have
- 25:40Speaker 9: a cold front coming in. It's gonna be forties at
- 25:42Speaker 9: not and barometric pressure.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Is gonna get right, and I.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Really think later this week's gonna do good for us.
- 25:51Speaker 3: And then, like you said, the.
- 25:52Speaker 9: Moon phase, it just seems like a lot of things
- 25:54Speaker 9: are lining up kind of the they're switching, they're getting
- 25:57Speaker 9: out of their bachelor groups.
- 25:59Speaker 3: You know, these bucks fins start breaking off, they're.
- 26:00Speaker 6: Gonna be looking at their buddies like, dude, you've been
- 26:02Speaker 6: cool all summer.
- 26:03Speaker 3: I don't really like you anymore. Man, you know, you
- 26:06Speaker 3: get gone out of here, that's cool.
- 26:08Speaker 2: So, you know, you kind of mentioned over the next
- 26:11Speaker 2: week and high anticipations of that if you had to
- 26:13Speaker 2: rank buck movement on a scale of one to ten
- 26:16Speaker 2: for the state of Indiana for the upcoming week.
- 26:18Speaker 3: What would you give it. I'm not going to do
- 26:21Speaker 3: a Midwest six.
- 26:22Speaker 6: And we're gonna.
- 26:25Speaker 9: So you know, like like we said, the pressure, the
- 26:28Speaker 9: very much pressure lining up that Helen getting kind of
- 26:31Speaker 9: moved out of here. I mean I would say an eight.
- 26:35Speaker 3: Man. I really think I'm giving it.
- 26:37Speaker 9: An eight because of the cold front two and them
- 26:40Speaker 9: phasing out from just there that rut phase is like
- 26:46Speaker 9: really good. They're gonna be hitting scrapes. I mean that
- 26:48Speaker 9: that's gonna be, you know, be hunting on my own.
- 26:50Speaker 9: I'm gonna be sitting.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Over scrapes the next week. N dude and eates enough
- 26:54Speaker 2: to get me in the woods. Ate, I'm pumped now,
- 26:56Speaker 2: appreciate you.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Yeah, you know it's oping day two.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Like maybe I'm a little extraly fired up, and I
- 27:02Speaker 5: really think.
- 27:03Speaker 3: I really think, man, I mean it's could be really good.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Enthusiasm kills deer, dude, and you gotta get after man.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Thank you. Absolutely, Yeah, that's right.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Enthusiasm.
- 27:29Speaker 3: This is Ben shup Trone. He has been hunting in Tennessee.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Killed him a big giant, massive ten point congrats man,
- 27:36Speaker 2: First of all, thank you man.
- 27:38Speaker 8: It's a it's been a ride it uh. You know,
- 27:42Speaker 8: it's something that I like to do every day. I
- 27:44Speaker 8: like to you know, we like to chase white Tail
- 27:46Speaker 8: every day. But yeah, when something like this happens, it is, uh,
- 27:51Speaker 8: it's super special.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yeah, man, for sure. You sent me a picture of
- 27:54Speaker 2: him ago. He's awesome, and it sounds like you got
- 27:56Speaker 2: some history with him. The historical data come into play.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:00Speaker 8: Yeah, So it's actually funny you say that. So you know,
- 28:04Speaker 8: before this happened, you know, last summer, I had been
- 28:06Speaker 8: seeing this property that I've been managing forever three years now,
- 28:10Speaker 8: and every time I drove by, it's like I almost
- 28:14Speaker 8: was going to hit a deer acrossing the road from
- 28:17Speaker 8: the property, and it was like somebody was saying, Hey,
- 28:20Speaker 8: there's the launch.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Wh aren't you hunting here?
- 28:23Speaker 2: You know?
- 28:23Speaker 8: And you know, I ended up bushogging that place and
- 28:27Speaker 8: putting out a camera and this buck was actually the first.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Picture I ever got at twenty twenty five. Oh, I
- 28:33Speaker 3: take that camera.
- 28:34Speaker 8: I take my cameras up every year. And uh, I
- 28:39Speaker 8: was laying in bed one one the evening, actually two
- 28:42Speaker 8: hours after a bush hoogg.
- 28:44Speaker 3: And uh, he just happened to be there.
- 28:46Speaker 8: Man, he was curious, he's checking things out, and man
- 28:48Speaker 8: was he he was way beyond the game every he
- 28:52Speaker 8: was killing everybody in Bellot season.
- 28:53Speaker 3: So that's cool, man.
- 28:55Speaker 4: So did you kind of put the pieces together and
- 29:01Speaker 4: look at data and like have a strike mission on
- 29:05Speaker 4: this deer or so a kind conservative seit and he
- 29:09Speaker 4: happened to be there.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's it's weird.
- 29:11Speaker 8: So I usually, you know, I've all the people that
- 29:14Speaker 8: I've kind of looked up to, you know, they just
- 29:16Speaker 8: say the hunt right, just get them in a tree
- 29:18Speaker 8: and see what things happened. And with this deer is
- 29:21Speaker 8: a little different for the past, I'd say since I
- 29:26Speaker 8: got a picture of him, which was I guess was.
- 29:27Speaker 10: In May or June.
- 29:31Speaker 8: I was trying to figure out a way to find
- 29:33Speaker 8: out his exact path or his morning path or feeding
- 29:36Speaker 8: ground every morning. And you know, I walked on the
- 29:40Speaker 8: park property about I guess three, three or four times
- 29:43Speaker 8: just looking for something.
- 29:44Speaker 3: And I ended up finding this tree.
- 29:47Speaker 8: And it was a four foot diameter tree as a
- 29:49Speaker 8: white oak, which is a giant oak here in Tennessee.
- 29:52Speaker 8: And I got my binoes, and I looked up and man,
- 29:56Speaker 8: this thing was absolutely loaded of acorns. And it was
- 30:02Speaker 8: pretty early for that to happen too around here, I guess.
- 30:04Speaker 8: And but anyways, I put up a camera there and
- 30:08Speaker 8: I figured out that in the morning, I got him
- 30:11Speaker 8: a picture right where he crossed the fence line and
- 30:14Speaker 8: then right when he was going towards.
- 30:15Speaker 3: The acorns, and he was eating them every single morning.
- 30:18Speaker 8: So I knew just in and there I needed to
- 30:21Speaker 8: that's where I wanted to kill this deer. And I guess, uh,
- 30:25Speaker 8: from there on, I guess he only came in our
- 30:28Speaker 8: north wind, because north wind was the wind that blew
- 30:31Speaker 8: into his face. And and I was like, I don't
- 30:35Speaker 8: know how the heck I'm gonna kill us deer because
- 30:38Speaker 8: the only you know, he only comes on this wind,
- 30:40Speaker 8: and I can't cross his fence line because it's something
- 30:42Speaker 8: else property, right, And so I figured out a way
- 30:46Speaker 8: and the only wind I could possibly hunt him in
- 30:50Speaker 8: was a perfect southwest wind cross wind, and uh, it
- 30:55Speaker 8: definitely helped me out on Saturday.
- 30:57Speaker 4: That's awesome, man, you know, I think that conservative appro
- 31:00Speaker 4: and being there at the exact right time is huge
- 31:04Speaker 4: for killing big deer.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Especially outside of the rut. And you know you said
- 31:08Speaker 2: acorns played a big part of it. That were you
- 31:11Speaker 2: scouting and finding the feed trees or you know you
- 31:14Speaker 2: said you kind of went in there trying to figure
- 31:16Speaker 2: that out, right, Did you already have all the trees
- 31:17Speaker 2: exactly kind of plotted out?
- 31:19Speaker 4: You know?
- 31:19Speaker 3: It was?
- 31:20Speaker 8: It's so it was so thick in there, and that's
- 31:22Speaker 8: why I bush howked it and it was so thick
- 31:26Speaker 8: in the past two seasons.
- 31:27Speaker 3: You know, I never hunted it.
- 31:28Speaker 8: I just kind of let it at that area be
- 31:30Speaker 8: a you know, a zone where they are, you know,
- 31:32Speaker 8: completely safe.
- 31:34Speaker 3: But I did see a.
- 31:36Speaker 8: Pattern with his deer where they would go from point
- 31:39Speaker 8: A to point B all the way to that oak
- 31:42Speaker 8: tree almost every single day. And sure enough he was
- 31:45Speaker 8: one of the deer that just I guess he designated
- 31:48Speaker 8: this tree as his feeding tree, so you could the
- 31:53Speaker 8: amount of rubs around the tree were kind of crazy too,
- 31:57Speaker 8: So it.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Was definitely his territory or his betting around. I got you.
- 32:00Speaker 4: So from around the country, it seems like crops are
- 32:03Speaker 4: kind of coming out a little bit early this year.
- 32:05Speaker 4: First off, you live in crop country, and then did
- 32:07Speaker 4: that play a role in kind of what's going on
- 32:09Speaker 4: where you're at.
- 32:10Speaker 8: Yeah, yes, so we we live in Bradley County, Tennessee.
- 32:16Speaker 8: He was killed on the outside of Bradley County, Tennessee,
- 32:19Speaker 8: and Bradley is very well known for crops and I
- 32:23Speaker 8: guess growing corn, soybeans, things like that. But the cool
- 32:28Speaker 8: part about this property is that it's bordered by not
- 32:32Speaker 8: only soybean field, but an edge of corn corn line.
- 32:36Speaker 8: And I could and every single night on the other
- 32:41Speaker 8: side of the oak tree, I was able to actually
- 32:45Speaker 8: ask for permission to sit on this lady's property and
- 32:48Speaker 8: watch him where I you know, she'd never she'd never
- 32:51Speaker 8: let me hunt, but she was. I was able to
- 32:54Speaker 8: watch him in that soybean field and so I got
- 32:57Speaker 8: to watch him grow, and it was you know, at
- 33:00Speaker 8: that moment, I was kind of like, I wish this
- 33:02Speaker 8: lady would.
- 33:03Speaker 10: Let me hunt.
- 33:03Speaker 8: But but man, I am so glad that I killed
- 33:06Speaker 8: him when he was hard for me.
- 33:08Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 33:09Speaker 8: He's so pretty. So the funny part is, and all
- 33:14Speaker 8: my friends are giving me absolute crap about the shout
- 33:16Speaker 8: out to Toby Dean in twenty one South but because
- 33:20Speaker 8: he's great at that, but uh, I was. It was
- 33:23Speaker 8: on video, and I got him coming in and I
- 33:27Speaker 8: got him actually fighting this buck, which is actually part
- 33:30Speaker 8: of that story.
- 33:30Speaker 3: But that's cool.
- 33:32Speaker 8: He actually fought a buck for about probably about ten
- 33:34Speaker 8: minutes before he came in, and which.
- 33:37Speaker 3: Is kind of really weird. I mean that really weird.
- 33:40Speaker 3: But I guess they get territorial, yeah, pret past.
- 33:44Speaker 8: But I had it out and it was an absolute
- 33:46Speaker 8: torrential down poor from the hurricane that came in, Hurricane Heleen,
- 33:51Speaker 8: and man, I was out there for I guess from
- 33:56Speaker 8: five to seven. I saw him at seven, and then
- 33:58Speaker 8: he started fighting this buck and those were blowing and
- 34:02Speaker 8: I thought this, you know, I thought everything was history.
- 34:04Speaker 8: And sure enough, that younger buck that came down was
- 34:08Speaker 8: the one he was fighting, and he went right past me,
- 34:11Speaker 8: and then Macho he followed right behind him, and probably
- 34:14Speaker 8: about twenty five yards. Man, it was an absolute just
- 34:19Speaker 8: roller coaster, I guess of emotions.
- 34:22Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Man, Well, you have a channel called bear Level and
- 34:26Speaker 2: I look forward to I want to see the experience
- 34:29Speaker 2: on videos.
- 34:30Speaker 3: That that's cool, dude.
- 34:31Speaker 2: So if you were looking forward here for the next week,
- 34:35Speaker 2: you know, I know you don't have a tag in
- 34:37Speaker 2: your pocket, but I bet you got some buddies that
- 34:40Speaker 2: are thinking about it. You're still scheming on deer, right,
- 34:43Speaker 2: If you had to think about the next week and
- 34:45Speaker 2: rank buck movement on a scale of one to ten,
- 34:48Speaker 2: what would you rank it?
- 34:49Speaker 3: And why?
- 34:50Speaker 11: You know, it's funny you say that because I was
- 34:53Speaker 11: just talking to you, you know, a couple of minutes ago,
- 34:56Speaker 11: and my buddy, we're on a deer at one of
- 34:59Speaker 11: our places, and you know, he hadn't moved it all
- 35:02Speaker 11: since June and just kind of sticking around getting the
- 35:06Speaker 11: velvet pictures, you know, and.
- 35:08Speaker 8: Just today he started coming into our main food plot
- 35:12Speaker 8: and he's been hammering every single day. So tomorrow we're
- 35:16Speaker 8: actually targeting him. And I've actually seen i'd say over
- 35:22Speaker 8: fifteen different deer hit this food plot.
- 35:24Speaker 3: And it's I think it's because it's just.
- 35:28Speaker 8: Right after this huge storm that you know, Center Country,
- 35:31Speaker 8: and they you know, I mean, I've seen them in
- 35:34Speaker 8: the crazy winds and crazy rain before, just kind of
- 35:37Speaker 8: like I was hind Macho Saturday.
- 35:40Speaker 3: But I think after this.
- 35:43Speaker 8: Storm, they're ready to eat and they're ready to get
- 35:45Speaker 8: back in there and start moving around and figuring out
- 35:48Speaker 8: their patterns a little bit.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Yeah, So on a scale of one to ten, What
- 35:52Speaker 3: are you going to call it? Oh, scale of one
- 35:54Speaker 3: to ten.
- 35:54Speaker 8: I'd say, I'd say I'd say high sevens man.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Who, that's pretty encouraging.
- 36:01Speaker 8: I know, I know it's pretty encouraging. But you know,
- 36:04Speaker 8: we've had south winds all all week long here in
- 36:08Speaker 8: southeast Tennessee and it's finally switching to the north and
- 36:12Speaker 8: it's finally cooling down really.
- 36:13Speaker 10: Quick in the evening.
- 36:14Speaker 8: So yeah, I think evening hunts is probably a high seven.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Man, Man, that sounds pretty good. We'll appreciate the report, dude,
- 36:22Speaker 3: Thank you so much. Casey.
- 36:24Speaker 2: My man Tony Peterson of Media of course, is on
- 36:28Speaker 2: the phone now, and uh, as always, Tony is a
- 36:32Speaker 2: wealth of knowledge. I've spent a lot of time already
- 36:34Speaker 2: on the phone with him before we got to this
- 36:36Speaker 2: because we had a lot to discuss. But it's deer
- 36:38Speaker 2: hunting time right now, Tony, it definitely is, buddy, Thanks
- 36:42Speaker 2: for having me on. Man, You're welcome.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Dude. How is Minnesota right now? Is it dry? Is
- 36:45Speaker 3: it wet? What's going on?
- 36:48Speaker 7: Uh?
- 36:48Speaker 12: Well, you know, you Southerner's always you guys from down
- 36:52Speaker 12: South and oak West always asked me what our water
- 36:54Speaker 12: situation is lake. I'm like, brother, we got fourteen thousand
- 36:56Speaker 12: lakes here, man, We.
- 36:58Speaker 10: We literally we don't dry out too often.
- 37:01Speaker 12: But yeah, it's we actually have pretty crazy conditions here.
- 37:05Speaker 12: Our woods are thicker than I think I've ever seen
- 37:07Speaker 12: because we got so much rain in June that it's
- 37:10Speaker 12: like there's a noticeable difference, you know, especially coming out
- 37:14Speaker 12: of last winter when we had really mild winter and
- 37:17Speaker 12: then we got just tons of rain and good growing
- 37:20Speaker 12: conditions this summer. It's like the animals are big and
- 37:24Speaker 12: the woods are like a jungle. It's kind of cool
- 37:26Speaker 12: out there.
- 37:27Speaker 3: Yeah, man, that sounds fun.
- 37:28Speaker 2: Are you out there bushwhacking and getting deep in the
- 37:31Speaker 2: timber or are you hunting crops?
- 37:33Speaker 3: Or like what's the move right now?
- 37:35Speaker 12: You know, I've been doing a little of all of
- 37:38Speaker 12: the above, you know, with my daughters, had them over
- 37:41Speaker 12: in Wisconsin and we did some stuff and they ended
- 37:43Speaker 12: up they ended up killing a spike buck and a
- 37:46Speaker 12: doe on the edge of a field on a private chunk.
- 37:49Speaker 10: I've got over there.
- 37:50Speaker 12: But I killed a dough just a couple of days
- 37:52Speaker 12: ago here in Minnesota on this place I just got
- 37:54Speaker 12: permission to hunt. And that was in the woods, kind
- 37:58Speaker 12: of on an acorn, kind of on a pond, and
- 38:00Speaker 12: right in the middle.
- 38:01Speaker 10: Of the thick stuff. So kind I've kind of been
- 38:04Speaker 10: all over man.
- 38:05Speaker 3: Yeah, have y'all had your first frost yet?
- 38:08Speaker 9: No?
- 38:09Speaker 2: Okay, So that's always the thing that I kind of
- 38:12Speaker 2: think about when you think about whitetails shifting their patterns
- 38:15Speaker 2: and all. You know, that first frost really has a
- 38:17Speaker 2: big effect on browse, right, and so right now you
- 38:19Speaker 2: just mentioned acorns or acorns excuse me, since we're talking
- 38:22Speaker 2: about Minnesota, and I'm sure that all that herbaceous growth
- 38:28Speaker 2: is still around as that first frost approaches. I mean,
- 38:30Speaker 2: y'all's first frost has to be in the next week
- 38:32Speaker 2: or two. Is that going to change what the deer
- 38:34Speaker 2: are doing?
- 38:35Speaker 10: Dude?
- 38:35Speaker 12: You would think so. But we've been in We've been
- 38:38Speaker 12: in the eighties every day. It's been wild. We actually
- 38:41Speaker 12: have a cold front moved in last night. I'm going
- 38:43Speaker 12: hunting here right after this because I think there's going
- 38:46Speaker 12: to be some deer on the move. But even now,
- 38:48Speaker 12: it's still in the sixties. So it's pretty crazy, man.
- 38:52Speaker 12: But it's weird because you know, last year I was
- 38:55Speaker 12: baiting bears and kind of dealing with that situation, and
- 38:58Speaker 12: the acorn situation was nuts and you know, some of
- 39:01Speaker 12: the soft mass too, And then this year I'm not
- 39:04Speaker 12: seeing nearly as many acorns.
- 39:06Speaker 10: There's still plenty.
- 39:06Speaker 12: Out there, but I saw seven dos the other night,
- 39:09Speaker 12: seven dos and fawns off that stand where I killed
- 39:12Speaker 12: that one, and they all came in on an It
- 39:15Speaker 12: was eighty three degrees when I got out there.
- 39:18Speaker 10: Not a single one of them went to this little pond.
- 39:20Speaker 12: They all just ate acorns around it, And I'm like,
- 39:23Speaker 12: I kind of think it's a little bit of a
- 39:25Speaker 12: clue that they've been you know, they've had so much
- 39:27Speaker 12: good browse and so much greenery and now we kind
- 39:30Speaker 12: of have this limited mass thing happening and they're really
- 39:33Speaker 12: keyed in on it, and so it's just it's cool
- 39:36Speaker 12: to see because that's it's not going to last that
- 39:38Speaker 12: long for us here, because it doesn't feel like there's
- 39:40Speaker 12: nearly as many out there.
- 39:41Speaker 10: So it's sort of like a you know, like a
- 39:43Speaker 10: typical mass.
- 39:44Speaker 12: Thing, right, like you better get in and get on it,
- 39:45Speaker 12: figure it out, and then you know, expected to die
- 39:49Speaker 12: on you because it's certainly going to.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So you just mentioned there that you feel really good
- 39:53Speaker 2: about to not in like the next upcoming days.
- 39:55Speaker 3: What's the main factor on that.
- 39:58Speaker 10: So a couple of things.
- 40:00Speaker 12: You know, we had a cold front come in, so
- 40:01Speaker 12: it's you know, we're twenty degrees colder today than we've
- 40:04Speaker 12: been for two weeks, so you know when you have
- 40:07Speaker 12: that going for you. But also we were like in
- 40:11Speaker 12: this weather holding pattern that was just calm.
- 40:14Speaker 10: It was perfect fishing.
- 40:15Speaker 12: Weather, like calm, sunny, just you know, eighty degrees, t
- 40:19Speaker 12: short weather, T shirt weather, shorts weather, whatever. And now
- 40:24Speaker 12: last night it was real windy, and today it's just
- 40:27Speaker 12: more windy as this front pushes through. So I know
- 40:31Speaker 12: where I'm going to go sit tonight. I know there's
- 40:33Speaker 12: I know there's a little waite acorns in there, and
- 40:35Speaker 12: there's one apple tree that I bet deer going to
- 40:38Speaker 12: come check today because it's been windy for the first
- 40:41Speaker 12: time in a couple of weeks, like really windy, and
- 40:45Speaker 12: so I kind of think, I mean, I have a
- 40:47Speaker 12: stand set up specifically for this apple tree, and there's
- 40:49Speaker 12: some acorns that it'll play off of, but I kind
- 40:52Speaker 12: of think that there's going to be deer coming do
- 40:53Speaker 12: a quick sweep around there and check it.
- 40:55Speaker 10: And keep moving.
- 40:56Speaker 2: So it seems like around the country, the word is
- 40:59Speaker 2: that crop for getting harvested early. Are you seeing that
- 41:01Speaker 2: there too?
- 41:03Speaker 12: You know, I haven't seen that around my house, but
- 41:05Speaker 12: I'm not I'm not hunting in a place with a
- 41:07Speaker 12: ton of egg. But I did see it when I
- 41:09Speaker 12: was with my daughters in Wisconsin, which was.
- 41:12Speaker 10: I guess, you know, eight nine days ago.
- 41:14Speaker 12: Now they were starting to cut corn for silage, and
- 41:19Speaker 12: you were starting to see some crops come out, and
- 41:21Speaker 12: I think that I actually think that factored into a
- 41:24Speaker 12: little bit on how we ended up getting on the
- 41:26Speaker 12: deer we did. So it's it's definitely happening.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Mm hm, gotcha.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I just didn't know if that would play into
- 41:31Speaker 2: your strategy or it seems as if, you know, you're
- 41:34Speaker 2: kind of removed from that bed to food crop pattern there,
- 41:37Speaker 2: so you kind of looking at somewhat of a main
- 41:40Speaker 2: food source hunt to not huh.
- 41:42Speaker 12: Well, you know, I'm I'm hunting here in the suburbs
- 41:44Speaker 12: and there are no fields around me there. Yeah, there's
- 41:47Speaker 12: a farm next to this property that has it's a
- 41:49Speaker 12: sod farm, so there's no food in there. It's just
- 41:53Speaker 12: you know, yard grass essentially, and so these deer, they
- 41:58Speaker 12: live on a pretty heavy you know, brows and masked pattern.
- 42:03Speaker 12: You know, like a lot of the other places I
- 42:05Speaker 12: hunted or I hunt, I would still be on some
- 42:07Speaker 12: kind of bed to food thing. This is this is
- 42:10Speaker 12: just a different deal here. It's just kind of a
- 42:12Speaker 12: unique situation. And it's you know, it's this is a
- 42:15Speaker 12: tiny property. It's only twenty five acres and so there's
- 42:18Speaker 12: just a few pockets where you're like, well, they're either
- 42:19Speaker 12: going to come through here to.
- 42:20Speaker 3: Eat or not.
- 42:21Speaker 12: And so you know, you kind of it's a small
- 42:23Speaker 12: property thing. You kind of cross your fingers and hope
- 42:25Speaker 12: they show up tonight.
- 42:26Speaker 2: You know, Yeah, are you using camera data to make
- 42:28Speaker 2: decisions on stuff like this?
- 42:30Speaker 12: So no, And the reason why I'm not is the
- 42:34Speaker 12: landowner's wife doesn't want anybody to have cameras out there.
- 42:37Speaker 10: She goes and hikes around behind her house.
- 42:39Speaker 12: Yeah, so I go into this place blind and I
- 42:43Speaker 12: kind of love it. I mean, I wish I could
- 42:45Speaker 12: use cameras there, but I'm you know, I know, there's
- 42:48Speaker 12: a couple of big deer in there that swing through.
- 42:51Speaker 12: Sometimes there's a couple of really nice bucks. But I'm
- 42:53Speaker 12: mostly I'm mostly looking for a dough and kind of
- 42:57Speaker 12: getting ready for to take my daughters in there, and
- 43:00Speaker 12: it's kind of using it as a it's sort of
- 43:01Speaker 12: a release valve for me because it's right next to
- 43:03Speaker 12: my house and it's just a little hunt with like
- 43:06Speaker 12: low standards. But you know, I went out there a
- 43:09Speaker 12: couple of days ago and I had seven deer come
- 43:12Speaker 12: through and shot a big dough and made a good
- 43:14Speaker 12: shot on her, and.
- 43:15Speaker 10: It was just a it was like a blast.
- 43:17Speaker 12: I mean, it was one of those sits when it
- 43:19Speaker 12: broke loose and those deer started showing up. I had
- 43:21Speaker 12: deer around me on every side of me for forty
- 43:24Speaker 12: five minutes and I ended up killing one and it
- 43:26Speaker 12: was just like, you know, just one of those fun deals.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yeah, man, that's cool, especially whenever it's you know, I
- 43:33Speaker 2: don't mean this in a bad way, but it's kind
- 43:35Speaker 2: of low pressure because it's right next to the house
- 43:37Speaker 2: and you know, you you're everything is on the menu,
- 43:42Speaker 2: per se, you know, dose bucks, whatever. It's just like,
- 43:44Speaker 2: let's go have a good time and do some hunting
- 43:46Speaker 2: and and I'm thankful you get to do that.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Man.
- 43:49Speaker 2: For sure, if you look forward to the next week,
- 43:52Speaker 2: I don't know what your weather patterns like that are
- 43:55Speaker 2: like there, but here it's very consistent, and uh, you know,
- 43:58Speaker 2: it seems like around the country that's that is kind
- 44:00Speaker 2: of the case. Do you feel like you're going to
- 44:03Speaker 2: see good movement throughout the next week?
- 44:07Speaker 10: I think next week's gonna be really good. Just by
- 44:09Speaker 10: looking at the forecast, Yeah, yeah, I.
- 44:12Speaker 12: Think I think we're sliding into the right time where
- 44:14Speaker 12: it's gonna be, you know, pretty soon we're gonna be
- 44:17Speaker 12: hunting scrapes and the weather is going to be just
- 44:19Speaker 12: generally a little cooler, and it's it's starting to break
- 44:21Speaker 12: in the right direction. I don't I guess I should.
- 44:24Speaker 12: I don't know if this is unfortunate or not. But
- 44:25Speaker 12: I'm gonna be down at Louisiana fishing next week, so
- 44:28Speaker 12: I'm not going to get the ground truth this stuff.
- 44:31Speaker 12: But just by looking at the forecast, I feel like
- 44:33Speaker 12: it's gonna be pretty good.
- 44:35Speaker 2: That's cool, all right, right it on a scale of
- 44:36Speaker 2: one to ten for buck movement, then for the next week.
- 44:39Speaker 10: I'm gonna give her a seven point five.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Buddy at said point five, dude, that's pretty optimistic, and
- 44:44Speaker 2: from a guy like you, I believe it, so it's
- 44:47Speaker 2: time to get in the woods to Minnesota.
- 44:49Speaker 10: We'll see, We'll see buddy.
- 44:51Speaker 3: Hey Man, I hope you have a great hunt tonight.
- 44:54Speaker 10: Awesome, thanks man.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Mark Kenyon actually went back to the back recently on
- 45:01Speaker 2: a hunt with a couple of guys. You should go
- 45:03Speaker 2: check out that down below at the YouTube link to
- 45:06Speaker 2: a list here, And if you want to see what's
- 45:08Speaker 2: going on with the Element, we have just put out
- 45:11Speaker 2: an awesome epic hype session of our best season ever
- 45:15Speaker 2: over on here our YouTube channel. Go check that out
- 45:18Speaker 2: down below. Guys, I want to say something here that's
- 45:21Speaker 2: kind of removed from Retfresh. There are a lot of
- 45:24Speaker 2: Americans who are hurting and having a difficult time right
- 45:27Speaker 2: now in the wake of Hurricane Helene. He heard that
- 45:30Speaker 2: mentioned a little bit in some of the interviews here,
- 45:33Speaker 2: at least the effects of the hurricane. If you can
- 45:35Speaker 2: find a way to give or help anyway at all,
- 45:38Speaker 2: find an avenue to do that, because that's what makes
- 45:42Speaker 2: us a great country. And I just wanted to put
- 45:45Speaker 2: that on your heart today. Get out there do some
- 45:49Speaker 2: hunting as well. Seasons are opening around the country. It's
- 45:51Speaker 2: an exciting time of year. Remember this is retfresh, keep
- 45:55Speaker 2: it fresh,
