- 0:00Hour number two Miller and Condon glad you're with us.
- 0:02We're talk sports with you for another hour.
- 0:05Bottom of the hour Steven M simple he covers the Nebraska
- 0:07Cornhuskers. Matt Rule got an extension here
- 0:10today. We'll get to that with sip
- 0:12bottom of the hour sip Husker illustrated part of on three
- 0:15media. Trent will make some pick circus
- 0:16sports sponsor those. Let's get some Iowa State
- 0:19conversation in here. Arizona State and the Iowa State
- 0:23do they collide at is it noon? I think it's noon on TNT or down
- 0:27the hall here on 100.3 the bus. And Travis Hines, columnist from
- 0:31the Des Moines Register, joins us.
- 0:33Pick his brain on that and some college, some Iowa State hoops
- 0:36as well. Hello, Travis Hines, How are
- 0:38you? I'm doing excellent.
- 0:40How are you guys? Doing well.
- 0:41I got to ask you this, and I know you cover Iowa State, not
- 0:44Utah, but this winning half the way.
- 0:47He's just flaunting, just giving your marketing company the
- 0:51middle finger when it comes to the availability report.
- 0:53And I might be the only one that cares.
- 0:55Maybe Trent to an extent. Not like you.
- 0:58Not like me. It drives me nuts that these are
- 1:00in place for a reason. We just sought the NBA, for
- 1:02crying out loud, with LeBron James and that inside
- 1:05information. Did your mark set any, I guess,
- 1:10levels of punishment for not following the letter of the law
- 1:13with these availability reports? Because Whittingham has given to
- 1:16your mark and the conference the middle finger, in my opinion,
- 1:20Travis. Yeah.
- 1:22I mean, I think, and I wrote this when the Big 12 announced
- 1:25this really on the eve of the season, that these availability
- 1:29reports are only worthwhile if everybody is on the same page
- 1:35and delivering the same level of consistency and transparency.
- 1:39Otherwise there is an incentive to cheat or to fudge or, you
- 1:43know, obfuscate whatever word you want to put on.
- 1:46And I think it was if, if everybody can't treat these the
- 1:51same, then you're rewarding cheating.
- 1:53And I think that is why you need to have strong controls and
- 1:58punishments in place. And I think as good as and
- 2:02welcome as availability reports are, I know the big twelves was
- 2:05sort of hastily implemented. And I think it was like 5 days
- 2:09before Iowa State had to leave for Ireland when they got the
- 2:11news that they were going to have to be doing and we're going
- 2:14to be the Guinea pigs because they're playing in a week 0
- 2:16game. So I the Big 12 credit for
- 2:19implementing them and maybe a little bit of grace for trying
- 2:23to figure this out a little bit on the fly.
- 2:25But ultimately, if you're going to have something like this, it
- 2:28behooves the league to make it matter, right?
- 2:31Otherwise it gets messy and it sets a president to where if you
- 2:36fudge with the rules, if you play games, it gives you a
- 2:40competitive advantage. And I don't that's the exact
- 2:43opposite of what was trying to be achieved with these
- 2:45availability reports. Well, that availability report
- 2:48has a whole lot of people outward doubtful for Arizona
- 2:51State, including the two biggest with Tyson and Levitt.
- 2:54Levitt listed as out and doubtful for Tyson.
- 2:57It just, you've seen it, Travis. It completely changes the
- 3:00complexion of this Arizona State team.
- 3:03They go from certainly a contender in the Big 12 to I
- 3:06think and also ran in the conference.
- 3:08The gap is that big with those two guys.
- 3:11Is it, does that make it more challenging kind of previewing
- 3:13and setting up a week when you have this narrative and this
- 3:16injury that just completely changes what we think about
- 3:19Arizona State? I think a little bit because I
- 3:24think for Iowa State and for, you know, how we try to talk to
- 3:29our readers about it like this is for Iowa State right now,
- 3:31right? When you've lost three games,
- 3:33you know, it matters what the other team is.
- 3:36It matters who they have to play.
- 3:37But ultimately, when you're in this position that Iowa State is
- 3:41in, trying to climb out of a hole, trying to rebuild
- 3:43expectations after your loftiest and what looked to be a
- 3:47chainable, attainable goals are now off the table.
- 3:50I think it's much more important to show success, to show
- 3:56improvement, to show some sort of consistency.
- 3:59Then it even really matters wins or losses.
- 4:01And obviously, I think the fan base would probably disagree
- 4:04with me on that last part. But I do think it is important
- 4:07for Iowa State to just find some level footing here so this thing
- 4:11doesn't spiral to where you're looking at going into that
- 4:14Oklahoma State game trying to get bowl eligible.
- 4:18And obviously Arizona State being without Levitt, looking
- 4:21likely to be without Tyson makes that winning part easier for
- 4:25Iowa State. But I think it'll it'll it won't
- 4:28be an empty victory, obviously, if Iowa State doesn't play well,
- 4:31but it's going to leave people feeling uneasy.
- 4:34And when you talk about process over results like Campbell does,
- 4:38I do think it's fair to judge Iowa State not just by the final
- 4:41score on Saturday, but like, are they moving this thing forward?
- 4:44Because they've been going backwards to varying degrees
- 4:47over the last three games. So when you were up there on
- 4:49Tuesday listening to Mauser and Campbell and a variety of
- 4:53players, did you a sense of urgency creeping into the
- 4:56program at all for this week, Travis?
- 4:59You know, I don't know that urgency would be the word that I
- 5:02would use. I think there are there are
- 5:04hints of that. But I think really what it's
- 5:07about up there right now is a little bit of recalibration, not
- 5:10only of expectations, but kind of of the the scope of their
- 5:14thinking to where you can't be when you go from Big 12 title
- 5:19college Football playoffs to three straight losses.
- 5:21And like the Liberty bowls on the table.
- 5:24I think everybody tries to get a little bit of tunnel vision in
- 5:27the best way possible to where everything outside of my control
- 5:32is outside of my control. Can I make my block?
- 5:35I'm Taylor Mauser, Can I call better plays?
- 5:37If I'm Matt Campbell, you know, how do I get how do I reach my
- 5:40team? How do I move them in the right
- 5:41direction? And I think that right now is
- 5:44what's going on up there. I don't think, you know, I think
- 5:47there's urgency, certainly, but sometimes urgency can feel like
- 5:51panic. And I don't think that's where
- 5:52they're at right now, but I do think like emotionally, there's
- 5:55probably some work to do to try to get yourself in a headspace
- 6:01where the the things you truly wanted and thought you could get
- 6:05are no longer on the table. You know, how do you find
- 6:08meaning? How do you find motivation in
- 6:11the day-to-day? And I think that's kind of what
- 6:13they've got to figure out, you know, this week and going
- 6:16forward feels like it. Goes hand in hand with the
- 6:18quarterback too. Rocco Bect is not playing well.
- 6:21Is he trying to do too much, forcing those balls in there, A
- 6:24couple of just absolutely awful throws that he made on Saturday
- 6:27against BYU? Is it knowing that and we're
- 6:30going to have to probably score to win games?
- 6:32Is he, is he putting too much on his shoulders?
- 6:34Is that maybe a reason that we've seen some of this downturn
- 6:37in his play? I think that's certainly part of
- 6:40it. And you've heard, you know, Matt
- 6:41Campbell talk about the team, not Rockelbeck specifically, but
- 6:46I think he's probably talking about Rocco of trying to do too
- 6:49much, of trying to push the envelope of, you know, really
- 6:53trying to put the team on your shoulders when really all you
- 6:55got to do is your job. And I think part of the issue
- 6:57here too, is that if you look over the last three or four
- 7:00games, you know, I don't know what level of trust or comfort
- 7:05exists between Rocco backed and all of his wide receivers.
- 7:09Because we talked to to Rocco a couple weeks ago about how he
- 7:13brought in the receivers and had his own edit done to talk about
- 7:17some of the things where there was a disconnect between how he
- 7:19was viewing things and how the wide receivers were doing
- 7:22things. And if you got a guy trying to
- 7:23do too much and a guy who doesn't necessarily trust or
- 7:28have full comfort with his receiving groups, I think that's
- 7:31what you kind of get, You know, when you see on Saturday is a
- 7:34guy who isn't sharp, who's probably overthinking and isn't
- 7:38playing up to his level of ability.
- 7:40And with what IO State needs Rocco back to do to win football
- 7:43games, that's that's a pretty tough mix there.
- 7:45To basketball with Travis Hines coming up here in a minute.
- 7:48Travis, of course, the columnist when it comes to Iowa State for
- 7:51the Des Moines Register. I want to ask you about BYU
- 7:53because trying to get a feel for this conference.
- 7:56I thought Utah would get him two weeks ago and I didn't think
- 8:00your BYU was going to come in after they're playing their
- 8:02archrival. That emotional let down coming
- 8:05to Ames, Barabach Meyer has my undivided attention.
- 8:08I think he's going to be really good and a real problem for
- 8:10schools in the Big 12. The BYU team that you saw last
- 8:14week, can they win this conference?
- 8:17I think absolutely. I mean, I think that they're
- 8:19walking a little bit of a tightrope because they don't
- 8:22have overwhelming talent, but they do remind me of some of
- 8:26Campbell's best teams where they find a way to win.
- 8:29And you're right about Bachmeier.
- 8:30Like, he was really interesting to watch.
- 8:33He's got that patient running style.
- 8:35I think he made some throws that, you know, Iowa State
- 8:37probably didn't expect him to be able to make where he really put
- 8:40it in tight spaces. It helped that he wasn't really
- 8:43under pressure after the first half at all.
- 8:45But yeah, I really like BYU. I mean, it's hard for me to, you
- 8:49know, brown them, especially when I think Texas Tech is so
- 8:51much more talented. But I like certainly when you
- 8:53look at what Claudia Sataki has done with this team the last two
- 8:57years, I think pounding them out or underestimating them is
- 9:01probably a mistake. Let's jump to basketball with
- 9:05Travis Hines, and hoops will begin officially on Monday, but
- 9:09we got a couple of exhibition games.
- 9:11Taban Lipsy, I think the conversation has to start with
- 9:13him. Not just if he'll be ready for
- 9:15Monday or the next game, but most importantly, is this an
- 9:18injury that's going to linger because a healthy Taban Lipsy
- 9:22completely changes the equation of this Iowa State team.
- 9:26I think the, the sense when you're talking to people around
- 9:29the program and in the program is that there's not a concern
- 9:33about this being a lingering issue for Tame and Lipsy going
- 9:37forward, that they feel like the program, the rehab has gone very
- 9:40well. He's on track to play Monday and
- 9:43they're not going to play him until he's 100% healthy.
- 9:46I think the, the bigger fear is that there's going to be other
- 9:50unrelated injuries going forward for him because it's been, you
- 9:53know, such a difficult health wise for him, you know, really
- 9:57even going back to high school and that ACL tear.
- 9:59And I know that like TJ takes that extremely seriously, like
- 10:04Tayman's practice load is. Very.
- 10:07Closely monitored throughout the year and I would not be remotely
- 10:10surprised if his practice time is hugely curtailed this year in
- 10:15an effort to keep him healthy. Because I do think with him
- 10:19healthy, obviously I'm not breaking news here that this
- 10:22makes them a much better basketball team and it unlocks a
- 10:26lot of other options for them. So keeping him healthy is
- 10:30certainly going to be top of mind for TJ Otzelberger the
- 10:33entire program up there this winter.
- 10:35Enjoyed your column on I think it was Tuesday about the about
- 10:38the team and some of the newcomers of what you've seen so
- 10:40far. I didn't see a minute of
- 10:42Creighton. I watched the first half of the
- 10:43Northwestern game. What struck me from your piece,
- 10:46because we know that TJ, since TJ's got there, you have to play
- 10:50defense to play for TVJ Otzelberger, I think you called
- 10:54it still a work in progress. The defense would do you notice
- 10:58they're behind her. Is that TJ?
- 11:00Who thinks they're behind defensively at this point?
- 11:04I think they're behind only when measured against the standard of
- 11:08what we've be at their best. I think they'll get there.
- 11:12I don't really have that big a concern, but watching it,
- 11:15they're really good at the point of attack.
- 11:16Like when the the ball crosses half court and they know the
- 11:20plan, you go, you trap this, you pressure there.
- 11:23They're really good at that. I thought where they got a
- 11:25little leaky or a little loose was when Northwestern move the
- 11:28ball from side to side two or three times and kind of got them
- 11:32in a scramble and rotation situation, which is really
- 11:35difficult to do at the level that Iowa State has done in the
- 11:39past. And I, I think they'll get
- 11:40there. I think a big part of the way
- 11:42that they constructed this roster was to add some speed,
- 11:46add a little bit of length and athleticism to allow them to do
- 11:49that better. And it's not remotely surprising
- 11:51to see a team without its starting point guard and with
- 11:55like, what, 8 or 9 newcomers not be at the A+ level in October.
- 12:00It's probably going to take them a little bit to get there, but I
- 12:03think that is part of the natural progression of a team
- 12:07and of this defense that asks so much of guys, you know, for the
- 12:10full 30 seconds on every possession.
- 12:13I don't know that people fully appreciate the intensity that
- 12:17Iowa State plays is defensive with and how many decisions each
- 12:20guy has to make on a possession, especially when they get in
- 12:23rotation. You know, one of the names that
- 12:25popped out was Dominic Nelson, the transfer They came in from
- 12:28Utah Valley. Remind me, was this the guy that
- 12:32after they found out the Mason Williams injury was a little
- 12:34worse, they kind of re engaged with him and and re recruited
- 12:37him again because if memory serves, they got Mason Williams.
- 12:41It felt like they kind of backed off.
- 12:42Nelson then saw the medicals and said, now let's go back up there
- 12:45and my do I have the story right?
- 12:49Man, I'm in the middle of football season.
- 12:50I can't. Remember but.
- 12:53I do think like what what Nelson gives them, especially in light
- 12:57of that injury, is another a little pop offensively off the
- 13:01bench. And I think it'll be really
- 13:03interesting to see how that develops because, you know,
- 13:05Nelson was the focal point of his offense the last year at
- 13:10Utah Valley. And now I think he'll still be a
- 13:13focal point when he's on the floor.
- 13:15But it's coming in in a dramatically different
- 13:18environment or ecosystem where you're probably not going to be
- 13:22the focal point of a defense when you come in off the bench
- 13:25and you're you're looking to your left and right.
- 13:27And there's Joshua Jefferson, even Mam Chilovich and Payman
- 13:30Lipsy. And I think that's a huge
- 13:32opportunity for him to be able to attack defenses and probably
- 13:36have left on his plate, both in terms of what a defense is
- 13:40throwing at him and what an offense is asking of him.
- 13:43And it'll be interesting to see, does that allow him to thrive or
- 13:46is there an adjustment period there?
- 13:47And certainly the early returns, you know, suggest that that's
- 13:51going to be a role, you know, well suited for him.
- 13:53Torre real deal. Looks like it to me.
- 13:57I mean, I think a big thing about freshmen when you see them
- 14:01is do they look comfortable and are they able to play at the
- 14:04speed of the game? And I thought Torre certainly
- 14:07look like that against Northwestern.
- 14:09And again, like he's in the same position.
- 14:11Everything they've asked him to do for his, what, 50 or 60
- 14:14minutes on the court of these exhibitions are more than
- 14:17they're like to ask of him throughout the season when Damon
- 14:19Lipsy comes back. And I think if you can have a
- 14:22smaller, narrower, more defined role as a freshman, that allows
- 14:26you to thrive because there's so much being asked of you that is
- 14:29brand new. When you're that young and you
- 14:31add in that you're an international student as well,
- 14:35where the entire everything is new to you from the minute you
- 14:39wake up-to-the-minute, you go to sleep, that if they can do that,
- 14:42I think that bodes very well for him.
- 14:44But I do think like, he's a guy that looks like he belongs at
- 14:48Iowa State and in the Big 12 without any question.
- 14:50One more for me on the local front, Eric Mulder comes back
- 14:54home. He comes in from Indiana,
- 14:56Purdue, Fort Wayne and felt like maybe a depth piece.
- 14:59He played well on Sunday against Northwestern, gave him some
- 15:01minutes is there. It's not that he's going to be
- 15:03playing 25 minutes a game, but maybe potentially a little bit
- 15:06bigger role for Eric Mulder coming back for his final season
- 15:09to college hoops. Yeah, I thought it was huge for
- 15:12him to play as well as he did on Sunday because you know, when
- 15:16the Dominican play, that was the second big to play, the first
- 15:20big off the bench, which tells you that the staff thought that
- 15:22he was probably going to be their number 2.
- 15:24And then Mulder comes in and outplayed him on Sunday.
- 15:27And I think like that, the best thing that can happen for Iowa
- 15:29State at that position is competition in my mind, because
- 15:34you want, you know, those guys, I think they're pretty closely
- 15:37grouped. You can and it's certainly out
- 15:38in front, but if they can continually push each other
- 15:41throughout the season and if TJ has options to go to, I think
- 15:45that is a huge bonus for Iowa State.
- 15:48And I thought Mulder was really good on Sunday.
- 15:50And I think the other thing too, when you look back over the last
- 15:52four years, the big that Iowa State have gotten better as the
- 15:57year have gone by. Like there were some Novembers
- 16:00where you're looking at Robert Jones, you're looking at Brad
- 16:02Chatfield and it's like, man, I don't know if these guys can
- 16:05play and then by January they're not superstars, but they are Big
- 16:0812 contributors. And so again, if this this is
- 16:11the baseline for both Plato and Molder, I think that is should
- 16:16make Iowa State fans pretty optimistic about what this looks
- 16:18like, you know, when we get to Big 12 play in a couple.
- 16:21Months. It's football season start NBA
- 16:23season for me. Yet did Curtis Jones make the
- 16:26Nuggets? He's on a two way deal, so he'll
- 16:29be up and down throughout the year I think.
- 16:32I think they like him a lot, but obviously you know, Denver's,
- 16:35you know, playing for for titles when you got a guy like Yokich.
- 16:38So it'll be interesting to see how much he's up and down.
- 16:40Good stuff, Travis, thanks for doing this.
- 16:42No Cyclone Insider this week. You guys will be back next week.
- 16:45You and Eugene appreciate you sitting in here talking cyclones
- 16:49with us. Travis Hines, enjoy your
- 16:51weekend. Thank you.
- 16:51We'll read you as we always do at desmoinesregister.com.
- 16:54Thanks, Travis. Thank you.
- 16:57Take care. Yep, good to talk to you, Travis
- 16:58Hines as we check in on Iowa State.
- 17:02I know Jones had a decent preseason.
- 17:06Good for him. Yes, that's a deal.
- 17:07He can. Shoot it, though.
- 17:09He can shoot it, that's for sure.
- 17:11Let's do this before we go to break.
- 17:13And by the way, Stephen M Sipple will join us on the other side.
- 17:16Do you have a feel on this game, Huskers?
- 17:18USC Yeah, I like Nebraska. You'd like Nebraska.
- 17:21Let me rephrase that. I like Nebraska this week.
- 17:25This week and the polls points, it's USC travelling.
- 17:29East. And it's cold you.
- 17:31Know and it's night. It's night and.
- 17:35Nebraska. Let me find the Lincoln weather
- 17:37on Is it going? To rain, that was something that
- 17:40I had saw. Lincoln weather.
- 17:44Let's see Saturday. A little missed.
- 17:46Yeah, not much, nothing, no, and 20% chance all.
- 17:49Right. And this is fall back weekend.
- 17:52I hate that. Why is that?
- 17:53I just how does it impact you? Well, it's dark at 5:00, sure,
- 17:59and I don't like that. Well, are you outside?
- 18:02Yes, yes, yes I am. Walking Jet.
- 18:06Walking Jet. Yeah.
- 18:07You know what really used to bug me?
- 18:09This. The first Monday or first couple
- 18:12of days of fall, back when I used to do afternoons and the
- 18:15afternoon drive back home. It seems like it's for whatever.
- 18:18Nobody's used to driving home in the dark, right?
- 18:21And you know, if you're doing 60, now you're doing 45.
- 18:24And yeah, and just because you, I got to put this public
- 18:30announcement out there for everybody that drives N, just
- 18:33because you live in Story County doesn't mean you get to drive in
- 18:36the left lane the whole way to Story County.
- 18:39I-35. There's three lanes.
- 18:41If you have Story County on your plate, doesn't entitle you to
- 18:44the passing lane, but it sure seems like it.
- 18:47With those people, get the foot on the gas is what you're saying
- 18:49it. Just drives me nuts and it's
- 18:51always Story County. They don't own the left lane.
- 18:55Get the hell out of the way, mother.
- 18:58'S got to get home. Indeed, time for a keyword.
- 19:02Let's do this. Head to KX and o.com right now.
- 19:05The keyword this hour is bank. It's your chance to win $1000.
- 19:09Bank at KX and o.com. This keyword contest rolls on
- 19:14bank at KX and o.com. Simple joins Trent and I next,
- 19:19Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 19:21Glad you're with us on Des Moines Sports Station.
- 19:23One O 6 point, three KX and all. It's time for sin.
- 19:32Steven M Simple talks with myself and Ken on Nebraska
- 19:35football. I mean, I have a radio show we
- 19:37have. Callers I pay.
- 19:38Attention to my Twitter notifications and all that.
- 19:42There's definitely some frustration.
- 19:44We talk Cornhuskers, and you never know what else is going to
- 19:47come up with 30 years on the Nebraska beat.
- 19:53Here's Stephen M Simple. As long as they're paying me to
- 19:55talk. I'm just going to keep.
- 19:56Doing it. And welcome back as promised.
- 20:01Let's get to him. Stephen M simple from on three
- 20:04media huskerillustrated.com. It's USC.
- 20:07It's Nebraska coming up on Saturday.
- 20:09Sip joins us in his regular spot here on a Thursday under the
- 20:15lights Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
- 20:17NBC has the television 630 kickoff Sip trend.
- 20:20Ken, thanks are coming on. Let's go back before we go
- 20:22forward and a much needed victory over Northwestern.
- 20:25Coming off the disappointing loss to Minnesota, Northwestern,
- 20:30it was a tougher game than maybe some thought it was going to be.
- 20:33But at the end of the day, the Huskers are six and two and bull
- 20:37eligibility. I guess where I want to start
- 20:39with the SIP is this running back, Emmett Johnson.
- 20:42I remember we discussed this, you know, prior to the season.
- 20:45He thought he was a good running back.
- 20:47Wasn't sure the depth in the room except this guy's having an
- 20:50outstanding year. There's one other kind of
- 20:53prognostication I was wrong about, which is the line is
- 20:57incredibly long this year. I I didn't expect this from
- 21:00Emmett Johnson. He's having that, he's
- 21:04exceeding, but he's exceeding a lot of people's.
- 21:07Expectations. Sure.
- 21:09He has become a very good back and now they don't have any
- 21:14depth. They're playing, there's playing
- 21:16a true freshman behind him and they usually won't give him more
- 21:20than 5 carries. So Emmett has to carry a heavy
- 21:23load and you know they don't run the quarterback here, so that
- 21:27increases his load too. But he handles it very well.
- 21:29He's a durable, not a big back means five 10200 he's fine.
- 21:35He's just I don't know the thing I say about him all the time.
- 21:39You know, he's not he's a double S hitter, he's not a home run
- 21:42hitter, but he's he's very reliable and he's relentless.
- 21:47I mean, he's a relentless running back.
- 21:50He fights he fights for every yard and he's pretty
- 21:55well-rounded and he doesn't fumble.
- 21:57He's fumbled one time in 146 carries.
- 22:00So that's good. It's a good picture.
- 22:03Not he's He's a critical element this week, Every week, really.
- 22:07This week, USC can mention it. Night under the lights,
- 22:11blackout, going to be a great environment.
- 22:14This one feels big. It feels different because of
- 22:16what it's still in front of them.
- 22:17UCLA. The UCLA has had a little bit of
- 22:20a bump, but they've certainly took a step back last week
- 22:23against Indiana. That Penn State road trip does
- 22:25obviously not look nearly as daunting as it did on coming
- 22:28into the season. This still has a chance to be a
- 22:31very special season for Nebraska, but it starts on
- 22:36Saturday night. Tell us a little bit about this.
- 22:38When the build up and you guys have gotten excited over there
- 22:41for a lot of games and it usually hasn't gone well the
- 22:43last couple of decades, is there a little bit more juice for this
- 22:46one? Just knowing what could still be
- 22:48in front of them. Yeah, Trent, there is and there
- 22:53and these, you know, there's kind of what you're alluding to
- 22:57is a lot of these big games that have happened in the month of
- 23:00November. It's been it's been horrible for
- 23:03Nebraska. Nebraska is one in seven in the
- 23:08month of November under rule, under Matt rule, Nebraska since
- 23:142000. I'll give you a stat that the
- 23:15Iowa fans will like. I think this is right.
- 23:18It's right for Nebraska for sure.
- 23:21Nebraska is is the four in the month of November going back to
- 23:252019. And Iowa I think is 19 to 5.
- 23:31So it shows you the difference in the programs and what why,
- 23:35you know, what's the deal? You can't, you don't win games
- 23:38in November. You're not going to have very
- 23:39good seasons then Nebraska is terrible.
- 23:42This game is a blackout. You know, we're calling it a
- 23:46blackout here. So they're all the fans are
- 23:49asked to wear black. They're going to wear black
- 23:51uniforms. You know, this is this is only
- 23:56the second ranked team. I think Nebraska's played,
- 23:58right. I mean, it was just Michigan and
- 24:00now this. So it's big from that
- 24:02standpoint. If Nebraska has any designs at
- 24:05all on being a playoff team, which they still do at 2 losses.
- 24:09If you win this and you win at UCLA, that conversation kind of
- 24:13gets actually legitimate. So there's no, there's a lot
- 24:16going on here. Now there's trepidation too,
- 24:19because it's not people are pretty realistic here.
- 24:22I mean, it's, I think there's, I don't know, there's such thing
- 24:25as hopeful trepidation. You know, there's comments,
- 24:28there's some hopefulness mixed with trepidation.
- 24:34I guess I closed so I quit rambling with this, OK, USC
- 24:40bullied Michigan, all right. And that, that that alone
- 24:46concerns you. They bullied Michigan up front
- 24:51and and Michigan bullied Nebraska up front.
- 24:55So, you know, all bets are off here.
- 24:58By the way, Iowa. 23 and three in November, dating back to
- 25:022019. So even better.
- 25:04Yeah, thank. You, yes, 23 and three.
- 25:08That's unbelievable. I want to stop there for a
- 25:12second and dip my cap to Iowa. That is November.
- 25:16I mean, you know, we all three of us have covered this sport
- 25:19for a long time. November's a a bear.
- 25:22I mean, just a bear. You're you're beat up.
- 25:24It's cold. A team that can go 23 and 3 has
- 25:29all of my admiration. God bless Iowa.
- 25:32I did not know that. Either so that that is a heck of
- 25:35a stat, no doubt about it. Sip.
- 25:37Let's get into the news of the day Matt rule extension.
- 25:40I think it takes them to 2032. Was this on the table prior to
- 25:46the Penn State Buzz or was the Penn State Buzz did this maybe
- 25:49expedite that? Are the two connected at all?
- 25:52Sipped normally they are, yeah. I'd have to say they're
- 25:55connected. I don't have any proof that this
- 25:59was on the table before James Franklin got, you know, got
- 26:06fired on October 12th. That was October 12th.
- 26:10So was this brewing before then? I'd be surprised.
- 26:16But I will say this Matt rules aggressive in this in that in
- 26:20this in this regard, the contract type situation regard
- 26:25he's he's aggressive in the pursuit of new contracts of, of
- 26:30more money, etcetera. It's in his nature.
- 26:34So it's I don't want to rule out that it was something he was
- 26:37pushing for behind the scenes. But I, my guess is no.
- 26:41Now I would say this I and I and I am driving right now.
- 26:45So I don't have all the terms of this new deal in front of me.
- 26:49It's just broke. But I know that if you look at
- 26:53this this new this we'll call an extension.
- 26:58It's not he they don't up his salary.
- 27:01You know, they keep it stays the same in the late stages of it.
- 27:05Not that I think will be important to Nebraska fan.
- 27:07He's already already OK, I'll just put it to you this way.
- 27:12If you look at Matt Rules current contract before this
- 27:17extension and Kurt Stignetti's new contract, Rules starting in
- 27:222027 was going to make more than Stignetti and his new deal in
- 27:2820/27/2028 and and beyond. So I think that Troy, Dan and
- 27:34the AD had to be very careful that you didn't raise Rules
- 27:39money any further because he's already, he's already making
- 27:43more than the best, you know, coaches in America.
- 27:47So he got this right, is what I'm telling you.
- 27:50Dannon got this right. I wondered about it as we heard,
- 27:53you know, we heard for the last, I don't want to say 3 or 4 days
- 27:57that this was coming. And I didn't know what the terms
- 28:00were, though. I just know the extension was
- 28:02coming. Would Dannon increase his pay
- 28:06markedly and how could you justify it?
- 28:09Well, he did. So there's that end of that
- 28:12conversation and I think a huge. Component from Pete Thammel of
- 28:15ESPNA, $15 million buyout this year that would be have to pay
- 28:20to Nebraska. So I mean, these contract
- 28:23extensions, it bothers me all the time.
- 28:24Well, he's off the table. No, he's not.
- 28:26People want to go pay somebody, they can go, go and if you want
- 28:28to leave, they can still leave. But a $15 million back to
- 28:31Nebraska, if he takes another job for this year, yeah, that
- 28:34does effectively eliminate him on that front.
- 28:38The temperature with rule. How concerned was was the fan
- 28:41base about Penn State, Obviously the connections there growing up
- 28:44at Penn State, all all the things that went along with it,
- 28:46yes. How concerned were Nebraska fans
- 28:49before today? OK, You know, Trent, I don't
- 28:53like to dodge questions, but I also am careful not to speak for
- 28:57people. I How concerned were Nebraska
- 29:01fans? I think it depends who you talk
- 29:03to. And that's how it was.
- 29:04That's what I found. I, you know, there was a, there
- 29:07were people, it wasn't hard to find people who said let him go.
- 29:10I mean, we, they can find it hasn't.
- 29:13It's not like he's had resounding success here.
- 29:15You know, he's a couple games over 500, I think the last I
- 29:20checked in. So now my thought though, and
- 29:24again, I don't like to speak for people.
- 29:26Everybody has their own thoughts, but my thought was you
- 29:29don't want to blow this up again.
- 29:31I was surprised at people that were sort of OK with moving on.
- 29:38Like really, you just want to blow up an entire staff and
- 29:43support staff and start again. I, I don't think that that's
- 29:49what this program needs now. I do, I say, would I say that
- 29:55I'm 100% certain that Matt rule has this program on the, the,
- 30:00the, the right trajectory. Not I can't say that, but I feel
- 30:04pretty good about it. I feel good enough to give him
- 30:07an extension if I'm the AD. So there's no guarantees in this
- 30:10stuff. I think you had to get it out
- 30:12today because there's, there's risk and waiting.
- 30:15Obviously they play USC and they're not favored on their
- 30:19home field. So there was risk you had to get
- 30:22it done today or tomorrow. Although SIP I'm seeing.
- 30:25A lot and this doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but
- 30:28boy, there's a lot of professional handicappers that
- 30:30love Nebraska this week with Lincoln Riley taking his team
- 30:33east does not go well. It's about a touchdown favour.
- 30:36So when you look at USC and I'm glad that you're going to see
- 30:39them this week because I was seized them in a couple of
- 30:42weeks. So I'm anxious to pick your
- 30:44brain next time we talk about about this Trojan outfit.
- 30:47Obviously we all know my Aleva terrific quarterback, UNLV
- 30:50transfer, but they're scheduled in the big 10 so far.
- 30:53Sip. I don't know if you get into
- 30:54that. Just the three wins a Purdue
- 30:57Michigan State. I'll give you the win over
- 30:59Michigan nice win there. Obviously, the tough loss to
- 31:02Illinois and then the last time they saw the field was in the
- 31:05rain I'd South Bend against Notre Dame.
- 31:08What do you see when you look at this USC squad?
- 31:11Oh. I mean, offensively I'm really
- 31:14impressed with what what they offer.
- 31:17Defensively, not as much, but offensively they're they're it
- 31:23starts with Lincoln Riley as a play caller.
- 31:25I mean, that alone is it is. It's formidable.
- 31:30You have to pay attention to that.
- 31:32I watched the game last year, You know, I was out there in LA
- 31:34and he's one of those play callers that a layman like
- 31:39myself can see. Oh, yeah.
- 31:41He's got it rolling. He's building off things.
- 31:43There's a rhythm. He's, you know, some play
- 31:46callers, you can't really. Are they good?
- 31:48Are they bad? I don't know.
- 31:49With him, you can see. Yeah, he's good.
- 31:51He's very good. That quarterback is a problem
- 31:57because of his escape ability, although he hasn't done a lot of
- 32:00that. He is able to though.
- 32:02What I really what really scares me is Nebraska does hasn't
- 32:06gotten to quarterback. They don't apply much pressure
- 32:09and if they do get to them, they have to commit six guys often
- 32:14and that's trouble on a couple fronts.
- 32:17They're really Tal US CS really talented at receiver.
- 32:20So if you you know, if you don't leave enough guys back there,
- 32:23they're going to hurt you. And he is really good against
- 32:25the blitz passing. His numbers against blitz is I
- 32:29think he completes 70 to some percent against blitz.
- 32:33He reads it well. Now The X Factor those the crowd
- 32:37and they they they change everything the line of
- 32:39scrimmage. They're one of those teams.
- 32:41And if you can get him out of the the the voice check and have
- 32:46to force them into silent, that can be a problem.
- 32:49It can be a very real problem that's probably gets overlooked
- 32:53a little bit too much. So you hope for a loud
- 32:56environment. Now, as far as their defense
- 32:59goes, they don't stop the run very well.
- 33:01That's where Nebraska has. That's where Nebraska has a shot
- 33:05here to play a little Iowa ball. Control the control the ball.
- 33:10Don't give them possession. Limit their possession.
- 33:13Limit their possession is the best way to put it.
- 33:15And you have #21. And he's he's not worn down.
- 33:21His legs are still live. I think you got to hammer away
- 33:24with #21 and keep the ball from them.
- 33:28We'll see on that, though. I'm not convinced.
- 33:31While USC has been vulnerable, I don't think they're bad.
- 33:36And Nebraska doesn't have an offensive line.
- 33:38They really don't move people very often.
- 33:41So will they be able to, will they be able to create enough
- 33:43room for him consistently where that where they can, where they
- 33:46can literally drive down the field on the ground?
- 33:49Stephen M Sipple. Husker illustrated part of On
- 33:52Three Media joining us in his weekly spot as we chronicle
- 33:55Husker football. Sep Thank you, buddy.
- 33:57Appreciate you jumping on. We'll talk to you next week.
- 33:59Thank you, Sep. All right.
- 34:01Take care. Yeah, Good to talk to you,
- 34:03Steven. M simple from on three media.
- 34:05Did you see Leistocow's tweet earlier today?
- 34:07What's that regarding Matt Rule? And there's a little back and
- 34:10forth between the media. They love to twist the knife
- 34:12too. This is a rivalry.
- 34:13Oh yes, Leistocow's tweet. Earlier today, Nebraska making
- 34:17extra sure to keep its coach that lost to Minnesota by 18.
- 34:25Where's the lie? It's not one.
- 34:27There's not one. No, I just, I just struck a
- 34:29funny ball with me. Anyways, what do you expect?
- 34:32A lot of steam. The sharps are all over Nebraska
- 34:35in this game because of Lincoln Riley all over them.
- 34:38Love the points. I think that's where I am too.
- 34:40Are you I home environment cold weather rainy night Oh, it's
- 34:44supposed to rain too on. Top of everything.
- 34:46That was something I guess I saw.
- 34:47That yesterday. I haven't looked here today to
- 34:49see if that's been updated, but it's Lincoln Riley traveling.
- 34:52Yeah, USC has been very good at home and they've been a disaster
- 34:56on the road for what their expectations are because of
- 34:59that. Yeah, I I definitely like the
- 35:00points here. And I think Nebraska is live
- 35:02this week. And you know, I don't say that
- 35:04very often. You don't.
- 35:05And I've been right more times than not on.
- 35:07No, you're right. Is there?
- 35:11I mean, we, we don't know yet. The 15th of November.
- 35:14Two weeks from Saturday, the Iowa plays at USC.
- 35:17Is there a chance this is a late, late, late game?
- 35:20No, it's already been announced. It'll either be two or two 30.
- 35:23Oh OK, so middle of the. Afternoon regardless.
- 35:25Oh, good central time. Yep.
- 35:26Oh. Man I was dreading 9. 3010
- 35:28o'clock that window. Oh good.
- 35:30Just we just don't know for sure.
- 35:32Do you know a network yet? No, that has not.
- 35:34Been announced, so that's what it's waiting on.
- 35:35So good middle of the afternoon. Yep.
- 35:37All right, good stuff. Trent's got the plays of the
- 35:39day. It's next.
- 35:40So there is a college game tonight.
- 35:43It's a what we've. Seen earlier in the week.
- 35:46I would have to categorize this as a better game potentially
- 35:50this week in Tulane, in UT San Antonio, and Tulane's OK.
- 35:55Yeah, I like. Tulane, I like watching.
- 35:56Tulane. Yeah.
- 35:57I told you I took a visit to Tulane.
- 35:59Yeah. And then why would you?
- 36:00Out of state tuition was not going to work out, but you got
- 36:02to go to New Orleans. Absolutely.
- 36:04That was a pretty good one. I I like that Tulane team.
- 36:08Yeah. The the.
- 36:10American that race. It's more intriguing to the ACC.
- 36:13Oh I totally agree when we have Bama.
- 36:14Tomorrow, let's talk. American instead of ACC.
- 36:16Well, find me a game. I think there's only one game in
- 36:19the ACC that might even be worthy, and I'm not sure I'll
- 36:22get your vote behind this. Who does SMU play?
- 36:25SMU Miami. There you go, you need to put
- 36:27that. One that ones on.
- 36:28Yeah, that. Ones the game in the ACC, but I
- 36:30agree with you on the American. It's a fun race.
- 36:32Fun race. All right, Trent's got some NFL,
- 36:34Trent's got some college football, circus sports
- 36:36sponsors, all of that. That's next.
- 36:38Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 36:40Glad you're with us on Des Moines sports station 106.3, KXO
- 36:43and the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
