- 0:00Speaker 1: Secondly, I saw something in the New York Times today
- 0:03Speaker 1: Elon Musk, and my gosh, things are changing very quickly
- 0:08Speaker 1: for Elon Musk.
- 0:11Speaker 2: And there were some quotes in the Times.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Where, of course he talked about the big beautiful bill,
- 0:17Speaker 1: the deficit that was coming, of course, things that we've
- 0:20Speaker 1: been talking about for quite some time.
- 0:22Speaker 2: A bill that will crush America in the coming years.
- 0:26Speaker 1: If you just look at the deficit side of it,
- 0:28Speaker 1: twenty trillion dollars at it over the next ten years,
- 0:31Speaker 1: or a thirty seven trillion dollar debt.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Don't we don't have that money. We can't sustain that
- 0:36Speaker 2: this one.
- 0:37Speaker 1: But also he said getting things done in Washington, DC
- 0:42Speaker 1: is not easy, again, something that we say all the
- 0:45Speaker 1: time here.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Washington always wins. What does that mean?
- 0:49Speaker 1: That means that if you're playing basketball in the NBA,
- 0:52Speaker 1: you can't get the ball and say I'm just going
- 0:54Speaker 1: to get the ball and run it up the court
- 0:56Speaker 1: and not dribble. You have to play by the rules.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You have to play within the confines of the rules
- 1:02Speaker 1: that are giving it to you. And in this constitutional Republic, again,
- 1:07Speaker 1: you've got four hundred and thirty five members in the House,
- 1:09Speaker 1: one hundred members in the Senate, you've got judges, you've
- 1:11Speaker 1: got three different branches. It was set up specifically not
- 1:15Speaker 1: to be easy, and Elon Musk has discovered that in
- 1:20Speaker 1: pretty rapid succession. It looks like he's really starting to
- 1:25Speaker 1: sound and think again like a businessman who wants to
- 1:29Speaker 1: get out of Washington and turn his back on politics.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, he effectively announced yesterday his time in Washington is
- 1:35Speaker 3: over a little bit earlier than was planned or expected,
- 1:37Speaker 3: but that he's done that this time as a temporary
- 1:40Speaker 3: employee of the government, a special government employee is over.
- 1:43Speaker 3: He's walking away. He thanked President Trump. The White House
- 1:46Speaker 3: claims they still have a good relationship the two of them.
- 1:49Speaker 3: That perhaps is true, perhaps is not true. But to
- 1:53Speaker 3: your point, show there's a quote he was interviewed by
- 1:55Speaker 3: the Washington Post. Elon Musk was in this morning's paper
- 1:58Speaker 3: and he says, quote, the federal bureaucracy situation is much
- 2:01Speaker 3: worse than I realized. I thought there were problems, but
- 2:04Speaker 3: it sure is an uphill battle trying to improve things
- 2:07Speaker 3: in DC, to say the least, learning the lesson that
- 2:10Speaker 3: many many businessmen have learned as they've come to Washington
- 2:13Speaker 3: and tried to impose the way they do business, which
- 2:16Speaker 3: is to sit at the head of a table and
- 2:17Speaker 3: tell people what's going to happen to a federal government,
- 2:21Speaker 3: to a federal bureaucracy. So he came in with the chainsaw,
- 2:25Speaker 3: he leaves a little bit humbled perhaps, I mean you
- 2:27Speaker 3: mentioned it. He did that interview with CBS News. We
- 2:30Speaker 3: saw a clip of it yesterday, and he sounded more
- 2:33Speaker 3: like the pre politics Elon Musk, which is to say,
- 2:37Speaker 3: talking about engineering and business and all the things that
- 2:41Speaker 3: he has become rich and famous for, and less about
- 2:45Speaker 3: wielding that chainsaw to cut around the margins of our
- 2:49Speaker 3: federal budget.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Again, it's not supposed to be easy. The whole idea
- 2:55Speaker 1: of Madison and Hamilton's constitution was you've got to actually
- 3:01Speaker 1: work with other people to get things done. That's why
- 3:04Speaker 1: as we look at all these and we're going to
- 3:06Speaker 1: be talking about this, this tariff ruling, you look at
- 3:10Speaker 1: all these emergency orders that are are are put out
- 3:14Speaker 1: there when arguably there aren't emergencies. You look at all
- 3:18Speaker 1: the presidential orders that are put out there.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Those make great headlines.
- 3:23Speaker 1: They may move the ball a little bit for a month,
- 3:27Speaker 1: two three months, but man if you want a lasting legacy,
- 3:33Speaker 1: you have to pass legislation. Passing legislation, as Joe Biden
- 3:37Speaker 1: learned in his term, extraordinarily difficult to do. It took
- 3:42Speaker 1: him about two years, but at the end of two
- 3:44Speaker 1: years he passed a historic number of bills that became
- 3:50Speaker 1: law where he had Republicans Democrats working together. Those bills
- 3:54Speaker 1: will last, those laws will last, just like Obamacare still
- 3:59Speaker 1: the law of the land. But these presidential orders, these
- 4:02Speaker 1: presidential directives will not. And so I think hopefully for
- 4:07Speaker 1: the sake of the country, we're going to have the
- 4:09Speaker 1: President and Congress starting to work together to pass bipartisan
- 4:13Speaker 1: legislation that we'll have a lasting impact.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see. And I'm just going to say, Joe,
- 4:19Speaker 3: it remains true that we spend too much, that the
- 4:22Speaker 3: federal debt and deaths are out of control. Elon Musk
- 4:25Speaker 3: is right about that. The big problem though, is attacking
- 4:28Speaker 3: that debt and deficit in the way that he did,
- 4:31Speaker 3: which is trimming around the edges and cutting off usaid
- 4:34Speaker 3: to children around the world, rather than actually looking at
- 4:37Speaker 3: the sources of our debt and deficit, which is a
- 4:40Speaker 3: much more difficult and complicated thing to do.
