- 0:08In a previous episode, we took you through what
- 0:11life was like in Mount Carmel during the 51 -day
- 0:14standoff. Now, after those 51 days of negotiation,
- 0:19psychological warfare, and rising tension, the
- 0:22standoff at Mount Carmel was about to end. The
- 0:25decision had been made at the highest level of
- 0:27the Justice Department. This would not be another
- 0:29day of waiting. This would be the end. I'm Rick
- 0:33Welch, and this is Prophet of Fire. It's Monday,
- 0:42April 19, 1993. 6 a .m. FBI tactical teams make
- 0:47their move. Two armored combat engineering vehicles,
- 0:51or CEVs, begin rolling toward the compound. Inside
- 0:54one, an agent holds a bullhorn and makes the
- 0:57announcement. David, we are in the process of
- 1:00putting tear gas into the building. This is not
- 1:02an assault. We are not entering the building.
- 1:06Inside the compound, chaos erupts. Children cry.
- 1:10Some adults prepare gas masks, homemade in many
- 1:13cases. The tear gas is CS, a powerful irritant.
- 1:17Its effects, choking, burning eyes, disorientation.
- 1:226 .07 a .m. The first canisters are delivered
- 1:25into the building via the CEV's mechanical arm.
- 1:28Survivor Sheila Martin remembers, quote, it was
- 1:30like smoke, but thicker. You couldn't breathe.
- 1:33Some of the babies were screaming, end quote.
- 1:36Koresh is nowhere to be seen. His lieutenant,
- 1:39Steve Schneider, takes command of communication
- 1:40with negotiators. The FBI continues to broadcast
- 1:44messages via loudspeaker. This is not an assault.
- 1:48We are inserting gas. Do not fire. If you come
- 1:51out now, you will not be harmed. 6 .30am. The
- 1:56gas injection expands. CEVs create breaches in
- 1:59the building's rear and sides to funnel in more
- 2:01gas. The sound of walls being crushed echoes
- 2:04across the prairie. Survivor David Thibodeau
- 2:07remembers, quote, they were punching holes in
- 2:09the walls. The wind would blow the gas deeper
- 2:11into the rooms. People were praying, crying.
- 2:14Some were still convinced God would intervene,
- 2:17end quote. 6 45 a .m. A single shot is heard
- 2:20from inside the compound. The FBI believes it
- 2:23is a warning, not a direct threat. No agents
- 2:26return fire. 6 52 a .m. A group of Davidians
- 2:30attempt to escape through a side door. They're
- 2:32forced back in by the thick cloud of tear gas.
- 2:34No one surrenders. By now, nearly 30 canisters
- 2:38have been inserted into Mount Carmel. The building
- 2:40itself is weakening, its walls sag, window panes
- 2:44shatter, but no return fire has come from inside.
- 2:47From a transcript in an FBI log we read, quote,
- 2:50no shots fired by subjects, still no sign of
- 2:53surrender, continuing gas delivery, end quote.
- 2:57The stage is set. By the end of this day, 76
- 3:00Branch Davidians, men, women, and children will
- 3:03be dead. The world would be watching in horror,
- 3:06but for now, it is only beginning. 7 a .m. The
- 3:09sun rises fully over central Texas. A clear,
- 3:13dry morning. The kind of day that normally promised
- 3:15peace. But this morning, the FBI prepares for
- 3:18escalation. Two more CEVs move into position.
- 3:22War canisters are loaded. The command center
- 3:24authorizes the phased gas plant. The goal is
- 3:27to increase discomfort, not provoke a firefight.
- 3:31Inside Mount Carmel, the atmosphere is suffocating.
- 3:33tear gas hangs in thick clouds, makeshift gas
- 3:36masks, cut -up milk jugs, wet cloth, even plastic
- 3:39bags fail to protect the children. Survivor David
- 3:42Thibodeau recalls, quote, You couldn't see 10
- 3:44feet. People were vomiting. We tried to stay
- 3:47in the central chapel thinking it was safest.
- 3:50David was in his room writing the seals, end
- 3:53quote. 7 .30 a .m. Negotiators call again. No
- 3:57answer. All contact has been lost with the interior
- 4:00since just after 6 a .m. No one has picked up
- 4:02a phone in over an hour. FBI agents grow concerned.
- 4:06What is Koresh planning? 7 .55 a .m. Another
- 4:10message is broadcast. From the FBI loudspeaker,
- 4:14the Branch Davidians hear, You are being gassed.
- 4:17This is not an assault. Exit now and you will
- 4:20not be harmed. But again, nothing. 8 a .m. A
- 4:25group of agents begins planning a direct breach
- 4:27if no one exits soon. However, the order remains.
- 4:30No lethal force unless fired upon. Inside the
- 4:33compound, a different narrative unfolds. Koresh
- 4:36tells his followers the gas is a final test from
- 4:38God. Some still believe rescue is coming. Others
- 4:41are losing hope. Survivor Sheila Martin recalls,
- 4:44quote, Some of the mothers were shaking, holding
- 4:46babies, but David kept saying, Stand firm. The
- 4:50Lord is in control, end quote. 8 .15 a .m. FBI
- 4:54logs note a noticeable shift in CEB tactics.
- 4:57One vehicle pushes deeper into the compound's
- 4:59north wing, creating a massive hole in the outer
- 5:01wall. Gas canisters are now being tossed manually
- 5:04inside open breaches. The FBI log states, quote,
- 5:08Severe structural damage. Entry routes expanding.
- 5:11No gunfire return, end quote. 8 .30 a .m. Negotiators
- 5:15again attempt to call. Still no answer. The hostage
- 5:19rescue team reports no movement through thermal
- 5:21imagery. Survivor David Thibodeau remembers,
- 5:24quote, We were huddled. Everyone was coughing.
- 5:27Some were praying. Some just stared. I don't
- 5:30think anyone knew what to do anymore." End quote.
- 5:338 .45 a .m. The FBI deploys more gas into the
- 5:36central chapel. By now, over 50 gas canisters
- 5:39have been used. No Davidians have exited. 8 .58
- 5:43a .m. A man emerges from the rubble. He raises
- 5:46his hands. His name is Rinos Avram, a Canadian
- 5:50follower of Quresh. He is immediately detained,
- 5:53decontaminated, and questioned. FBI agents hope
- 5:56it's the beginning of a mass exodus. It's not.
- 6:009 a .m. Negotiators make one final call, still
- 6:03silence. The FBI ramps up gas deployment, unaware
- 6:07that, in less than three hours, the compound
- 6:09will be engulfed in flames. The FBI shifts strategy.
- 6:13More aggressive tactics are authorized. CDVs
- 6:16punch water holes through the compound walls
- 6:18on the north, south, and rear wings. These aren't
- 6:21surgical breaches. These are gaping voids. By
- 6:24now, over 60 canisters of tear gas have been
- 6:27deployed. Flashbangs are added to the mix. Still,
- 6:33no one comes out. Inside, people are beginning
- 6:36to suffocate. The gas is settled in every room.
- 6:39Eyes burn. Lungs fail. Children lie limp in their
- 6:43mother's arms. Survivor Sheila Martin remembers,
- 6:46quote, Some of the women started singing hymns.
- 6:49There wasn't anything else we could do. We thought
- 6:51we were going to die, end quote. 930 a .m. Survivor
- 6:55David Thibodeau later described seeing David
- 6:57Koresh in his room, quiet, withdrawn. Koresh
- 7:00reportedly told Steve Snyder, quote, I'm waiting
- 7:03for God to tell me what to do, end quote. 10
- 7:07a .m. Another CEV breaches the front of the chapel.
- 7:10More gas floods in. Negotiators make one last
- 7:12appeal through loudspeakers. David, this is your
- 7:17last chance. Lead your people out now. Still,
- 7:21silence. 1130 a .m. Thermal imaging picks up
- 7:25sudden movement. Then, in less than 30 seconds,
- 7:28three separate fires erupt inside the compound
- 7:30simultaneously. One in the dining area, one in
- 7:34the second floor hallway, one in the front right
- 7:36corner. The wind kicks up. Flames spread instantly
- 7:40through the dry wooden structure. The FBI sees
- 7:43it on their monitors and radios frantically to
- 7:45fire units staged nearby. from the FBI radio
- 7:48transcript reread, quote, we have a fire. It's
- 7:51everywhere, end quote. 1145 AM, the roof capes
- 7:56in. Television networks across the world begin
- 7:59broadcasting live images of the compound engulfed
- 8:01in fire. Millions watch as black smoke coils
- 8:04skyward from what had, just weeks earlier, been
- 8:07a religious sanctuary. The temperature inside
- 8:09reaches over 2 ,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Ammunition
- 8:13stored in the compound begins to cook off, popping
- 8:15in the heat. Many Davidians are trapped. Others
- 8:19choose not to leave. Survivor David Thibodeau
- 8:22remembers, quote, I made it out of back window.
- 8:24The smoke was so thick I couldn't see. I thought
- 8:27everyone else was behind me. They weren't, end
- 8:30quote. Only nine people escaped the fire. Inside,
- 8:3576 Branch Davidians perish, including 25 children
- 8:38and two pregnant women. Among the dead, David
- 8:42Koresh and Steve Snyder. Autopsies later reveal
- 8:47that many died from smoke inhalation, others
- 8:50by gunshot. Some speculate that Schneider shot
- 8:53Koresh, then himself. Others believe Koresh took
- 8:56his own life. We'll never know for certain. In
- 8:59under an hour, Mount Carmel is reduced to ashes.
- 9:02What began as a raid to serve a warrant ends
- 9:05in the deadliest government confrontation with
- 9:06U .S. citizens on American soil since the Civil
- 9:09War. In our next episode, we enter the aftermath.
- 9:14The congressional hearings... The cover -up claims,
- 9:17the conspiracy theories, and the explosive legacy
- 9:20of Waco, from Oklahoma City to January 6th. What
- 9:24happened in Waco didn't end with the fire, it
- 9:27was just getting started. I'm Rick Welch, and
- 9:30this is Prophet of Fire.
