- 0:00Right. So, like I promised to a couple
- 0:02of you when you were quoting The
- 0:05Princess Bride. Have you guys seen the
- 0:06movie The Princess Bride?
- 0:08>> Has anyone not seen The Princess Bride?
- 0:11>> A couple of you. Okay. Okay. Fair
- 0:13enough. Most of you have though. Okay.
- 0:15So, I will just tell you it is it is a
- 0:18very famous movie. It's a great movie.
- 0:21Ava and I watched it fairly recently.
- 0:23It's like very cheeseball, but it's
- 0:24awesome. So, it's this very famous movie
- 0:26from the8s that's about this love story
- 0:29between like a princess and a farm boy,
- 0:31which is why it's called The Princess
- 0:33Bride, right? And it's got like every
- 0:35single classic fantasy trope in it,
- 0:39right? It's got like pirates and sword
- 0:42fighting and magic and riddles and an
- 0:44evil prince and monsters and betrayal
- 0:46and love. It's like so cheeseball and so
- 0:49fun. Yes, Ava.
- 0:51>> The prince was like Lord Farquad. The
- 0:53prince looks like Lord Farquad.
- 0:55>> He does. He does have like a Lord
- 0:57Farquad fit on. That is true. Anyway,
- 0:59anyway. Anyway, so I know that a couple
- 1:01of you said you haven't seen it, but I
- 1:02am going to spoil it right now, so just
- 1:04like sorry.
- 1:06>> It's a movie from 35 years ago, so
- 1:07you're going to be fine. So anyway,
- 1:09there is this scene toward the end of
- 1:11the movie. All of you who have seen this
- 1:12movie will know this. There's a scene
- 1:13toward the end of the movie where the
- 1:15main character, Wesley, has been
- 1:16captured by the bad guys and he gets
- 1:19tortured to death. Right? That's like a
- 1:21huge spoiler in this movie. And so then
- 1:23the good guys get a hold of Wesley after
- 1:26he's been tortured to death, right? And
- 1:27when they get a hold of him, they're
- 1:29very sad because their friend has just
- 1:30been tortured to death, right? And uh so
- 1:33one of them is like, "Hey, I know this
- 1:35dude who can do miracles. Maybe he can
- 1:38fix this situation and he can bring
- 1:40Wesley back from the dead and we'll be
- 1:41okay." And so they go and they go to
- 1:43visit the miracle dude, right? And in
- 1:45the movie, his very creative name is
- 1:47Miracle Max. And at first it seems like
- 1:51Miracle Max isn't going to be able to
- 1:52help them, right? But then as he is
- 1:55looking at Wesley and he's examining his
- 1:57body and there's this very famous line
- 1:59in the movie where he says, "Yes, okay,
- 2:00Wesley is dead, but he's not fully dead.
- 2:04He's only mostly dead." And he said, and
- 2:07he says in the movie, he says, "Mostly
- 2:08dead means he's slightly alive." And
- 2:11that is how the writer of the movie is
- 2:14just like, "Yeah, for sure. We'll
- 2:15totally bring this dude back from the
- 2:16dead to defeat the bad guys and get the
- 2:18girl." and do the whole thing, right?
- 2:19There's like very little logic in that
- 2:22movie, right? But anyway, so I bring up
- 2:23that scene in the movie because even in
- 2:27this fantasy movie called The Princess
- 2:29Bride, where there's like magic and
- 2:31monsters and anything in the world is
- 2:33possible, right? There is this sense
- 2:35that death is final, right? Like the
- 2:38writers of this movie, even in this
- 2:40cheese ball movie, have to come up with
- 2:42what is like kind of a dumb excuse for
- 2:45why this character who is dead in the
- 2:48movie isn't actually all dead. Because
- 2:50if he's all dead, then that wouldn't
- 2:52really make sense for them to be able to
- 2:53bring him back from the dead and he gets
- 2:54up and starts walking, right? Like, and
- 2:56we'll see that in in other shows or in
- 2:59real life, too, right? Like, do any of
- 3:01you watch like medical dramas or
- 3:03anything like that? No. Hannah in the
- 3:05back. Okay, Gavin, kind. So, so if you
- 3:08watch like medical dramas, right, like
- 3:10General Hospital or I don't know, House
- 3:12or like any of those shows, so there
- 3:14there'll be a scene where like the
- 3:15medical patient where they're their
- 3:17heart stops beating and all the doctors
- 3:18will rush in and they've got like
- 3:19electric paddles and they like yell
- 3:21clear and they try and get the heart
- 3:22going again, right? And if they want to
- 3:24add some real drama, they're they'll be
- 3:26like, "It's been 3 minutes since this
- 3:28person's heart stopped or it's been 4
- 3:29minutes," right? And the longer that
- 3:31goes on where they're talking about it
- 3:32and they're like, "Man, this person
- 3:34isn't isn't getting up." We know from
- 3:36watching the show that the likelihood of
- 3:38them waking up gets smaller and smaller,
- 3:40right? And we know that someone waking
- 3:43up after like four or five or six
- 3:45minutes or 6 hours from the dead that
- 3:48that just doesn't happen, right? And and
- 3:50so we know especially like that's with
- 3:52like modern medicine, right? But if you
- 3:54go back to like Jesus's day, right, we
- 3:57that would have even be been less
- 3:59possible, right? Where they don't have
- 4:00all of that. And even today in like the
- 4:02movies we watch, we're like, it wouldn't
- 4:03make sense for Wesley to just get back
- 4:05up, right? So, so hold on to that idea
- 4:07because we're going to come back to it
- 4:08in just a sec. So, if you've been with
- 4:10us for the last like handful of weeks,
- 4:12we've been going through this series
- 4:12that we're calling I am who I am. And
- 4:15each week we're walking through one of
- 4:17these seven I am statements that Jesus
- 4:20makes about himself. Right? These are
- 4:22seven metaphors that we say every week.
- 4:24Seven metaphors that Jesus gives us to
- 4:26help us understand his identity and
- 4:29mission. Right. So, I know that in the
- 4:32last weeks I've been offering you guys
- 4:33an opportunity to like call out what was
- 4:35the first one we hit, what was the
- 4:36second one we hit. Here's my challenge.
- 4:38If one of you thinks you can give me all
- 4:41four that we've hit so far, four. Five.
- 4:43All five that we've hit so far, I will
- 4:46give you a chance right now.
- 4:49Nobody. Kate thinks he's got it. What's
- 4:51that?
- 4:52>> I'm too dumb.
- 4:53>> Does it include money? Bro, just go for
- 4:54it. Right. Okay.
- 4:55>> I'm still
- 4:56>> Okay, fair enough. Can anybody hit me
- 4:58with the first one that we did? Week
- 4:59one.
- 5:00>> I am the bread of life. Okay. Week two.
- 5:02>> I am the
- 5:05gate.
- 5:05>> No, I mean that was one of them, but
- 5:07what was the gate one?
- 5:08>> I'm like the gate for the sheep.
- 5:10>> Gate for the sheep. Okay, that was week
- 5:11three. Uh, anybody got week two?
- 5:15>> One thing is the first verse is actually
- 5:18in the
- 5:19>> That's not one of the names. Anybody got
- 5:21week two? I am the blank of the blank
- 5:25>> light of the world for sure. And then
- 5:26this last week, we had Meredith up here.
- 5:28And what did she teach on?
- 5:29>> I am the good.
- 5:31>> I am the good shepherd. Yeah, for sure.
- 5:32So, we've got him so far. The bread of
- 5:34life, the light of the world, the gate
- 5:35for the sheep, the good shepherd. And
- 5:37tonight, we're going to be hitting the
- 5:38fifth, the sixth, the fifth of the I am
- 5:42statements in John's gospel. That is, I
- 5:45am the resurrection and the life. I am
- 5:48the resurrection and the life. Okay.
- 5:51Have any of you heard that one before? I
- 5:52am the resurrection and the life.
- 5:54>> A couple of you for sure. Uh, and before
- 5:56we jump into that, okay, I'm going to
- 5:58tell you a couple things about this I am
- 5:59statement. First, there is a lot of
- 6:01Bible tonight. So, if you do not have a
- 6:04Bible of your own, which I see Joel
- 6:05does, uh, in the back of the room, I've
- 6:07got a stack of ESVs, a stack of NLTs.
- 6:10NLTs is what we teach out of every night
- 6:12on Sundays. ESVS is what Pastor Jay
- 6:14teaches out of on Sunday mornings. Um,
- 6:17but we're going to be reading about 45
- 6:18verses in John chapter 11. So, if you
- 6:20don't have a Bible of your own, I would
- 6:22recommend definitely grabbing one of
- 6:23those NLTs. Okay, so that's that's the
- 6:25first piece. Second piece is that the
- 6:28scene that we're going to be talking
- 6:29about in the Bible is the biggest
- 6:31miracle that Jesus has performed in the
- 6:34entire Gospel of John besides his own
- 6:36resurrection, right? Like Jesus is going
- 6:39to raise a dude from the dead in this in
- 6:41this story, but Jesus is going to raise
- 6:44a guy from the dead who hasn't just been
- 6:45dead for like 4 minutes since his heart
- 6:48stopped or for 4 hours since his heart
- 6:50stopped, but for 4 days since this dude
- 6:54passed away. And and just for reference,
- 6:56I looked up uh online when I was
- 6:58prepping for this message. I looked up
- 6:59what the longest anyone has ever been
- 7:01revived after their heart has stopped
- 7:03beating, like in in modern history. And
- 7:06there was the the longest recorded case
- 7:08was a dude who was revived after eight
- 7:10hours and 42 minutes. And that's with
- 7:12like the literally the most advanced
- 7:14modern science that that you know
- 7:16possibly exists. The most advanced
- 7:18technology that we could have and the
- 7:20most advanced stuff that the doctors
- 7:22were able to give him. 8 hours and 42
- 7:23minutes. Jesus is about to raise a dude
- 7:26after 4 days of him being dead. And this
- 7:29miracle is so significant in the gospel
- 7:32of John, right? This miracle is the
- 7:34reason why John says the religious
- 7:37leaders decide that they're going to
- 7:38have Jesus arrested and killed. Like him
- 7:41feeding the 5,000, okay, whatever. Him
- 7:43walking on water, oh, okay, whatever.
- 7:45Him, you know, doing some other
- 7:46miracles, that's all fine. But like
- 7:48Jesus raising a dude from the dead and
- 7:51the religious leaders go, "Okay, we're
- 7:52going to have him arrested and killed."
- 7:54In fact, this miracle is so significant
- 7:56in John's gospel that the religious
- 7:58leaders are like, "Hey, that dude
- 8:00Lazarus, who Jesus raised from the dead,
- 8:02let's just like have him arrested and
- 8:03killed, too."
- 8:04>> They're like, "You know what? That dude
- 8:06Lazarus, who everybody is seeing walking
- 8:08around alive after he already passed
- 8:10away, everyone, if they see him, they're
- 8:13going to really believe that Jesus is
- 8:14the son of God. We cannot let that
- 8:16happen." So, we'll jump into it. So,
- 8:18this is John 11 verse 1. And if you
- 8:21didn't want to grab a Bible or you don't
- 8:23have one of your own, we do have some of
- 8:24the the verses that'll be up on the
- 8:25screen. So verse one, it says, "A man
- 8:28named Lazarus was sick. He lived in
- 8:31Bethany with his sisters, Mary and
- 8:33Martha. This is the Mary who later
- 8:35poured the expensive perfume on the
- 8:37Lord's feet and wiped them with her
- 8:38hair. Her brother Lazarus was sick. So
- 8:41the two sisters sent a message to Jesus
- 8:44telling him,"Lord, your dear friend is
- 8:46very sick." So these two sisters, they
- 8:49send a message to Jesus asking him to
- 8:52come and heal their brother. Right?
- 8:53These are three people who Jesus knows
- 8:55very very well. They're very good
- 8:57friends of his during his ministry.
- 8:59Right? And if you uh normally read out
- 9:01of the ESV or another translation, uh
- 9:04you might see that the the sisters uh
- 9:06when they send their message to Jesus,
- 9:07they don't say, "Hey, it's your very
- 9:08dear friend." They call Lazarus the one
- 9:11you love. They say that this is that's
- 9:13the relationship that Jesus and this
- 9:15dude have that this guy Jesus and him
- 9:17are such good friends they call him the
- 9:19one you love and Jesus would know who
- 9:22they're talking about. In another one of
- 9:23the gospels uh we see another scene of
- 9:25Mary and Martha and so if you know like
- 9:27other gospel accounts you you probably
- 9:29recognize those names. So there's this
- 9:31scene earlier uh in one of the other
- 9:33gospels where Mary uh Jesus is teaching
- 9:35in their house and Mary is sitting at
- 9:36Jesus's feet and learning from him and
- 9:38Martha is like using her gift gift of
- 9:41hospitality to be serving the needs of
- 9:42Jesus and his followers. So like they
- 9:44know Jesus, right? They know that he's
- 9:47this incredible teacher. They know that
- 9:49he's he's a miracle worker. They know
- 9:50that he heals the sick and the blind.
- 9:52They know that he casts demons out of
- 9:54people. They know that if Jesus would
- 9:56just come to their house, come to their
- 9:59brother's bedside, it'll all be okay.
- 10:02Verse four says, "But when Jesus heard
- 10:04about it, he said, Lazarus's sickness
- 10:07will not end in death. No, it happened
- 10:10for the glory of God, so that the Son of
- 10:12God will receive glory from this." So,
- 10:16although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and
- 10:19Lazarus, he stayed where he was for the
- 10:22next two days. is if you got to go to
- 10:23the bathroom, you can just go.
- 10:24>> No, I don't. It's a question about the
- 10:29I know that people need to go to heaven,
- 10:33but if he I know he was trying to
- 10:35resurrect him, but why? Because he could
- 10:38have been saved in heaven and not be
- 10:42persecuted or done that again.
- 10:44>> I love where your your head is. I love
- 10:46that question and that is a lot to
- 10:48unpack right now. So, why don't you save
- 10:50it for a small group and then you guys
- 10:51can talk about it there. But that's
- 10:52that's a great question, Harper. I
- 10:54really appreciate that. So So Jesus
- 10:55tells them, "Hey, his sickness isn't
- 10:57going to end in death, right? He says,
- 10:58"This happened for the glory of God, so
- 11:00the son of God will receive glory from
- 11:01this." Jesus is kind of speaking in like
- 11:03a riddle when he talks to them, right?
- 11:04Like I read that and I'm like, that
- 11:06sounds kind of weird, right? Because he
- 11:08says it's not going to end in death, but
- 11:09Jesus knows that Lazarus is going to
- 11:12die, right? But he says the sickness
- 11:14isn't going to end in death. He knows
- 11:17he's going to die, but he knows he's not
- 11:19going to stay dead. It's not going to
- 11:20end in death. So why does Jesus do it
- 11:23that way? Right? Harper kind of asks
- 11:25that question, right? But Jesus could go
- 11:27to Bethany right when he hears it. He
- 11:29could snap his fingers and heal him like
- 11:31the moment that he hears that this guy
- 11:33is sick. But instead, he lets Lazarus
- 11:36experience the pain of dying. He lets
- 11:39the sisters experience the pain of
- 11:41losing their brother. Why does Jesus do
- 11:43that? Well, Jesus tells us, he says that
- 11:46this is done for the glory of God. So
- 11:49the son of God will receive glory from
- 11:52this. You hear that? He says it's for
- 11:54the glory of God. Have you guys ever
- 11:57heard of main character syndrome? Do you
- 11:59know what that is?
- 12:00>> Yes.
- 12:01>> Yes. Anybody like, "No, I've never heard
- 12:02of main character syndrome."
- 12:04>> I think I think I heard.
- 12:07>> Really? That's something else. That's
- 12:08something else. So main character
- 12:10syndrome is apparently Cad's story. Main
- 12:12character syndrome is where a person uh
- 12:15thinks and acts like they're the main
- 12:17character in like a movie or a novel,
- 12:19right? Like I dude, Cade says he does
- 12:22that. I I do honestly the same thing a
- 12:24lot of the time. Like y'all, I think
- 12:25that that might be one of the biggest
- 12:26problems of like American Christianity
- 12:29is that a lot of us, maybe most of us
- 12:31have like some amount of main character
- 12:34syndrome, right? Like we'll hear like,
- 12:36"God loves you and he sent his son to
- 12:38die on the cross for your sins." will be
- 12:39like, "Well, yeah, of course God loves
- 12:41me and he sent his son to die on the
- 12:42cross for my sins." Like, I'm pretty
- 12:44great. I'm pretty awesome. And if there
- 12:47is one thing that I want you all to take
- 12:49away from tonight, I want you to
- 12:51remember this. This is going to be hard
- 12:53to hear for Cade. You are not the main
- 12:56character. I am not the main character.
- 12:59Genuinely, God is. And if you are a
- 13:03follower of Jesus, then that means that
- 13:06your life has one purpose. To give God
- 13:08glory. And sometimes the way that God is
- 13:12going to get glory is by saying yes to
- 13:15the prayers that we give him, right? By
- 13:16healing the sick, by opening the eyes of
- 13:18the blind. And sometimes the way that
- 13:20God will get glory is by not doing those
- 13:23things. I had breakfast with a guy the
- 13:26other week and this last month his heart
- 13:29has been just completely set on fire for
- 13:31Jesus. Like super super exciting to talk
- 13:34to him. And he told me, "Dude, I have
- 13:36seen more stories or more videos on Tik
- 13:39Tok of like atheists and agnostics and
- 13:42and just people who have never been to
- 13:44church going to church for the first
- 13:46time, hearing the gospel for the first
- 13:48time, giving their lives to Christ
- 13:51because of what they saw happen to
- 13:52Charlie Kirk a month ago." Like Charlie
- 13:55Kirk lived his life wanting to bring
- 13:58glory to God. And what we can see right
- 14:01now, what we have an opportunity to see
- 14:02right now in real time, is how God is
- 14:05using his death, a horrible tragedy, no
- 14:08matter how awful that is, he's using it
- 14:11to bring glory to God as we see
- 14:13thousands and thousands and thousands of
- 14:15people encountering God through this
- 14:17experience. So, just for the sake of
- 14:20time in this text, we'll skip a few
- 14:21verses. Jesus hangs back an extra two
- 14:23days. He finally tells his disciples,
- 14:25"Okay, we're going to go to Bethany."
- 14:26The disciples are nervous because
- 14:27they're like, "Hey, Jesus. Last time we
- 14:29were in that area, the people tried to
- 14:31kill you because of your preaching." And
- 14:33Jesus is like, "No, dude. We're going
- 14:34anyway." And then verse 16 says that
- 14:36Thomas, who's one of his disciples,
- 14:38Thomas, nicknamed the twin, said to his
- 14:40fellow disciples, "Let's go too and die
- 14:42with Jesus." I think that's awesome,
- 14:45right? Like, I love that. I love that
- 14:46there is this bold, outrageous faith
- 14:48that Thomas has, right? He thinks that
- 14:50if he follows Jesus back into Judea that
- 14:53it means that they're going to all just
- 14:55get attacked by a mob and killed. And
- 14:56he's like, "All right, bet. Let's go. If
- 14:58Jesus is going, I'm going going. I'm
- 15:00ready to die." Like, how many of you
- 15:03guys would be willing to do that? How
- 15:06many of us would be willing to do that?
- 15:07Sponsors, too. Like, I had a
- 15:09conversation with another young guy, a
- 15:11believer, but he's he's not serious
- 15:13about it, right? Um, and I asked him,
- 15:15"Bro, if Jesus showed up and told you to
- 15:19leave like all your career plans, all
- 15:21your big ambitions, like everything you
- 15:23want to do with your life to just like
- 15:24leave your nets and follow him, would
- 15:27you do it?" And that guy goes, "Well,
- 15:30yeah, if Jesus told me, like if Jesus
- 15:34Christ himself, like if Jesus Christ,
- 15:37the Lord Jesus, the son of God, like
- 15:39showed up in a vision and was like,
- 15:40"Hey, go be a missionary." then like,
- 15:42"Yeah, I'd do it if Jesus did that."
- 15:45Right? And I thought, "Bro, you are like
- 15:47doing a lot of work to tell me that the
- 15:50only way that you would let God
- 15:52interrupt your plans and interrupt your
- 15:53life is if like literally Jesus showed
- 15:55up and was like, "Go come follow me,
- 15:58right?" But honestly, how many of us are
- 16:00like that, right? Like how many of us
- 16:03can often only be willing to follow
- 16:05Jesus as far as it's convenient for me?
- 16:08only as long as Jesus doesn't ask me for
- 16:10too much of my time, for too much of my
- 16:12attention, for too much of my money, for
- 16:14too much of my energy. Like y'all, I
- 16:16want us all to be like Thomas, right? I
- 16:19want us all to be Thomases. I want us to
- 16:20be locked in and just like, "Wherever
- 16:22you go, Jesus, I'm going. I'm ready to
- 16:25die." Not because we're going to die,
- 16:27but because if we're ready to die for
- 16:30Jesus, then that means we'll be ready to
- 16:32live for him, too.
- 16:34So verse 17, it says, 'When Jesus
- 16:37arrived at Bethany, he was told that
- 16:40Lazarus had already been in his grave
- 16:42for 4 days. Four days Lazarus has been
- 16:47in the grave. John wants us to know that
- 16:49Lazarus is not like Princess Bride style
- 16:51like almost dead or kind of dead or
- 16:53mostly dead. He is like all the way, no
- 16:56coming back, buried for 4 days in the
- 16:58ground, dead. Verse 18, it says,
- 17:02"Bethany was only a few miles down the
- 17:04road from Jerusalem, and many of the
- 17:06people had come to console Martha and
- 17:08Mary in their loss. When Martha got word
- 17:11that Jesus was coming, she went to meet
- 17:13him." But Mary stayed in the house.
- 17:16Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if only you
- 17:18had been here, my brother would not have
- 17:20died. But even now, I know that God will
- 17:23give you whatever you ask." Jesus told
- 17:26her, "Your brother will rise again."
- 17:29Yes. Martha said, 'He will rise when
- 17:31everyone else rises at the last day.
- 17:35So, so Jesus arrives in Bethany and
- 17:37there's already this big crowd of people
- 17:39who are at the sister's house mourning
- 17:40the loss of their brother with them. And
- 17:42and one of the sisters, Martha, she
- 17:44comes outside to Jesus and we can we can
- 17:46hear in her words how disappointed she
- 17:48is that Jesus has come too late, right?
- 17:51We can we can hear that just like
- 17:53everyone else, she thinks that not even
- 17:56Jesus can overcome her brother's death.
- 17:59And and I think that it is so powerful
- 18:02to see in Martha that she still has
- 18:06faith even when the answer to her prayer
- 18:09has been no. Right? She says, "Even now
- 18:12I know that God will give you whatever
- 18:14you ask. Even now I know that my brother
- 18:17will be alive again when God establishes
- 18:20his ultimate kingdom on the earth. Like
- 18:23even now I know that God is good even in
- 18:27my grief. That's powerful to me. Verse
- 18:3124 or 25
- 18:33Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection
- 18:37and the life. Anyone who believes in me
- 18:40will live even after dying. Everyone who
- 18:44believes in me or believes who lives in
- 18:46me and believes in me will never ever
- 18:49die. Do you believe this, Martha? Yes,
- 18:53Lord. She told him, I have always
- 18:55believed you are the Messiah, the son of
- 18:58God, the one who has come into the world
- 19:00from God.
- 19:03Y'all, there is so much like rich, meaty
- 19:07theology, so much God talk that are in
- 19:09those three verses, right? We could just
- 19:12spend a whole other week just in that
- 19:14couple of verses unpacking it. But I
- 19:16think what is so powerful is right after
- 19:20Jesus has told her, "Hey, your brother
- 19:22Lazarus is going to come back from the
- 19:23dead." Martha says to him, "Yeah, he's
- 19:25going to come back from the dead like in
- 19:27the future when everybody comes back
- 19:28from the dead at this future event at
- 19:31the end of history that the Jews called
- 19:33the resurrection, right? And Jesus says
- 19:36to her, "I am the resurrection.
- 19:40I am the resurrection. He doesn't just
- 19:43say, "Hey, I'm the guy who's gonna like
- 19:45trigger the resurrection or I'm the guy
- 19:47who's going to cause the resurrection."
- 19:49He says, "I am the resurrection."
- 19:54The reality of this future resurrection
- 19:57that is going to take place, the reality
- 19:59of that resurrection is all wrapped up
- 20:02and tied into relationship with Jesus.
- 20:07Jesus is saying, "Yeah, I'm the one who
- 20:09is going to bring about that future
- 20:11resurrection when I come to establish my
- 20:14kingdom on the earth." But he's also
- 20:15saying, "I'm the one who's going to
- 20:17resurrect myself in just a couple days."
- 20:21He's already said that just a chapter
- 20:23earlier in John chapter 10. We didn't
- 20:25talk about it last week, but he says, "I
- 20:27can lay my life down and I can pick it
- 20:29up again."
- 20:31You guys, I've been telling you every
- 20:33week in every one of these I am
- 20:35statements that Jesus is tying his
- 20:39identity to the identity of God. And
- 20:42maybe nowhere in the entire book of John
- 20:45does he do that more than here. He says,
- 20:48"I am the resurrection and the life."
- 20:53And what happens next is we're going to
- 20:55see him prove it. There's there's a
- 20:57pastor friend of mine who says that uh
- 21:00he talks about how every time we see God
- 21:02answer a prayer by doing something
- 21:03supernatural, every time we see him heal
- 21:06someone, every time uh we we see a demon
- 21:08cast out, anytime we see something
- 21:10supernatural that God does, it is a
- 21:12picture of the future kingdom of God
- 21:15where it's not just sometimes that God
- 21:16heals. It's not just sometimes where
- 21:18someone might be brought back from the
- 21:20dead, but it will be all of us. It will
- 21:23be all of us who are in Christ who will
- 21:26never die, who will never get old, who
- 21:28will never get sick, who will never lose
- 21:31a loved one, never ever again. That is
- 21:34the future kingdom. That is the
- 21:36resurrection.
- 21:38And what comes next in our story is just
- 21:40like how if somebody gets healed today,
- 21:42it's a picture of that future reality.
- 21:44What we see in the story is that Jesus
- 21:47is going to show his followers a picture
- 21:49of that. He's going to show us a picture
- 21:51of that. So, we'll skip ahead a couple
- 21:53verses. Jesus sends Martha to get her
- 21:55sister Mary. And Mary just falls at
- 21:58Jesus's feet. And she says the same
- 21:59thing Martha said. She says, 'Lord, if
- 22:02only you had been here, my brother would
- 22:04not have died.
- 22:07And that's another thing that I want us
- 22:08to notice in this passage is that Jesus
- 22:10responds differently to Mary, right? To
- 22:13Martha, she comes she talks to him
- 22:15theology, right? She talks she she talks
- 22:17God talk. So Jesus talks God talk. But
- 22:20to Mary who comes to Jesus and she just
- 22:22speaks out of her broken heart, Jesus
- 22:26responds with a broken heart.
- 22:30Verse 33, when Jesus saw her weeping and
- 22:33saw the other people wailing with her, a
- 22:35deep anger welled up within him and he
- 22:38was deeply troubled. That word word that
- 22:42the the NLT translates anger is kind of
- 22:44like a a squirly word, right? Jesus
- 22:46knows what he's going to do. He already
- 22:48knows that he's going to heal Lazarus.
- 22:51But Jesus is angry at the fact of death.
- 22:55Jesus is angry at the brokenness of the
- 22:59creation that he has made. Jesus is the
- 23:01one who John tells us made the entire
- 23:04universe, but he did not make the
- 23:07universe intending for there to be
- 23:09death. And he's going to do something
- 23:11about it. Verse 35 or 34, it says,
- 23:15"Where have you put him?" He asked them,
- 23:18they told him, 'Lord, come and see. Then
- 23:21Jesus wept.
- 23:25Jesus wept, not because he didn't know
- 23:28if he was going to be able to raise
- 23:29Lazarus from the dead or not. He wept
- 23:32because Mary wept. He wept because
- 23:36Martha wept. He wept because he loved
- 23:39his friend Lazarus.
- 23:43The Bible says that Jesus is not this
- 23:45far-off God who doesn't really care
- 23:47about our situations, who can't really
- 23:49sympathize with our grief or or or the
- 23:51hurts that we feel or the embarrassment
- 23:53we feel or the loneliness that we feel.
- 23:55Right? Jesus came to earth to experience
- 23:59all of those things.
- 24:01Jesus came to earth to weep at the
- 24:04graveside of his friend, to weep with
- 24:07his friends who were weeping.
- 24:09I spend a lot of time on Sunday nights
- 24:11trying to paint this like big picture of
- 24:14God, right? A big picture of God, a big
- 24:16picture of Jesus. But we also can't lose
- 24:20sight of the fact that Jesus, our Jesus,
- 24:23is a God who weeps. He is the God who
- 24:27grieavves with us, who mourns with us.
- 24:31We'll keep reading. It's verse 36 right
- 24:33through the end. It says, 'The people
- 24:35who were standing nearby said, 'See how
- 24:39much he loved him.' But some said, 'This
- 24:42man healed a blind man. Couldn't he have
- 24:44kept Lazarus from dying? Jesus was still
- 24:47angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave
- 24:50with a stone rolled across its entrance.
- 24:52"Roll the stone aside," Jesus told them.
- 24:55But Ma Martha, the dead man's sister,
- 24:57protested, "Lord, he has been dead for 4
- 25:00days. The smell will be terrible." Jesus
- 25:03responded. Jesus responded, "Didn't I
- 25:05tell you that you would see God's glory
- 25:07if you believe?" So they rolled the
- 25:10stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to
- 25:12heaven and said, 'father, thank you for
- 25:14hearing me. You always hear me, but I
- 25:17said it out loud for the sake of all
- 25:19these people standing here so that they
- 25:21will believe that you sent me." Then
- 25:24Jesus shouted, "Lazarus, come out." And
- 25:28the dead man came out, his hands and
- 25:30feet bound in grave clothes, his face
- 25:33wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them,
- 25:35"Unwrap him and let him go." So, I got
- 25:40to wrap up, right? I told you that
- 25:41there's a lot of Bible tonight. If I was
- 25:44a better preacher, I'd give you like
- 25:45three tight application points and then
- 25:47like leave you chewing on them as you go
- 25:49off into small group, right? But I don't
- 25:50have any of that. Here's what I got.
- 25:53Jesus says,"I am the resurrection and
- 25:57the life." Jesus makes what is maybe the
- 26:00clearest statement in the entire gospel
- 26:03of John about his divine identity. And
- 26:07then he follows it up with what is the
- 26:10clearest picture of his godness by
- 26:13raising Lazarus from the dead. The
- 26:14clearest picture up until this point at
- 26:16least. And in between that statement
- 26:19about his godness and that picture of
- 26:22his godness, we get to see the clearest
- 26:24picture of Jesus's humanness when he
- 26:27weeps at the grave of his friend.
- 26:31That is Jesus. That is our Jesus. Truly
- 26:35God and truly human. And maybe you need
- 26:40to remember one of those pictures more
- 26:42tonight, right? Maybe you need to hear
- 26:44that Jesus is God. Jesus is the one who
- 26:47has the power over life and death. Jesus
- 26:50is the one who the scriptures say has
- 26:52defeated death and hell. And when Jesus
- 26:54comes in his kingdom, when he comes with
- 26:57every single person who has ever passed
- 26:59away, uh who is in Christ, all sorrow
- 27:01and all hurt will be done away with.
- 27:04That he is the God who died on the cross
- 27:07in order to restore you to life with
- 27:09him. So that just like Lazarus came out
- 27:11of the tomb, you will come out of the
- 27:13tomb both spiritually right now and also
- 27:16in the end when Jesus comes back in in
- 27:19person physically.
- 27:21But maybe you need to hear that Jesus is
- 27:23human and Jesus can sympathize with our
- 27:26weakness and our pain and our grief.
- 27:29That Jesus has experienced loss and
- 27:32betrayal and humiliation the way that we
- 27:35have. that Jesus is a God who is near to
- 27:39us.
- 27:40But either way, as we wrap up here, I
- 27:43hope that you will be remembering both.
- 27:45That is our Jesus, truly God and truly
- 27:49man. That is our King.
- 27:52So, let's pray.
