Latest / Foul Territory / Tim Britton talks Trade Deadline: Tarik Skubal sweepstakes, Most aggressive teams, Luke Weaver value
Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome Tim Brettan here. He is on to talk about
- 0:06Speaker 1: I'm sure I'm assuming the trade deadline because we love
- 0:08Speaker 1: the trade deadline. It's only about ten days away, So Tim, welcome.
- 0:12Speaker 1: What do you got for us is dig right into
- 0:14Speaker 1: the trades here.
- 0:17Speaker 2: But any direction you want to go in, I guess.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Would you tell me what's your favorite trade idea that
- 0:22Speaker 1: you have the favorite team you have?
- 0:23Speaker 3: What do you have here?
- 0:25Speaker 4: Well, so I focus on the Mets, So I think
- 0:28Speaker 4: you know, the Mets trading Luke Weaver to a team
- 0:31Speaker 4: like the Seattle Mariners, to me makes a lot of sense.
- 0:34Speaker 4: We were fitting into a bullpen. I think the Mariners
- 0:36Speaker 4: look to me like the team in the American League
- 0:38Speaker 4: does the best chance to make a real leap in
- 0:41Speaker 4: the second half. You know, they're sitting around five hundred,
- 0:43Speaker 4: They've be sitting around five hundred all year. But you
- 0:45Speaker 4: look at that roster, there's not like major areas that
- 0:47Speaker 4: need improvement outside of the bullpen. The bullpen has been
- 0:50Speaker 4: such a strength for Seattle for a while, it hasn't
- 0:53Speaker 4: been to this point this season. You put Weaver in
- 0:55Speaker 4: the back end of games there, you know, if you've
- 0:56Speaker 4: got Andre's munnos in the ninth inning. But you put
- 0:59Speaker 4: Weaver in front of him, the way he's pitched, this
- 1:01Speaker 4: is the start of May. He's given up one earned run.
- 1:04Speaker 4: He's been fantastic for the Mets. He's got that extra
- 1:06Speaker 4: year of team control, so New York can hang on
- 1:08Speaker 4: to him. But that might be the piece that gets
- 1:10Speaker 4: them the most at the trade deadline compared to some
- 1:12Speaker 4: of the guys who are in their walk years.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Okay, well enough about the Mets. We've we've talked about
- 1:18Speaker 1: them there there. We already talked too much about the Mets.
- 1:21Speaker 3: That's it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The Mets are out. Let's get to your tiers. You know,
- 1:24Speaker 1: as a senior reporter for the Athletic you're the Mets guy.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I know you want to talk about the Mets. But
- 1:28Speaker 1: you've kind of tiered it right with teams Tier one,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Tiers two, tier three, all the way. I think he
- 1:33Speaker 1: goes down to what tiers seven? Yeah, tiers seven, So
- 1:36Speaker 1: let's start tier one. Let's start at the top. Okay,
- 1:39Speaker 1: it could be and should be aggressive buyers. So what
- 1:41Speaker 1: teams do you think should be And I don't want
- 1:44Speaker 1: to say could be, I say I would say will
- 1:45Speaker 1: be aggressive buyers.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Here in a couple of weeks.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there you look at the Yankees, the Phillies,
- 1:51Speaker 4: the Brewers, the Cups, and actually the Pirates. The Pirates
- 1:54Speaker 4: are probably the one that stands out as a weird
- 1:56Speaker 4: one there. You know, the other four teams are all,
- 1:58Speaker 4: you know, looking like they're headed toward the post season
- 2:00Speaker 4: and kind of solidifying for what they could be in October.
- 2:03Speaker 4: But I think you look at teams that are aggressive
- 2:05Speaker 4: buyers in the past, like call them like all in buyers,
- 2:07Speaker 4: teams that are willing to trade significant prospect capital for
- 2:10Speaker 4: win now pieces.
- 2:12Speaker 2: You think about.
- 2:12Speaker 4: Teams like, you know, teams of the past, like the
- 2:15Speaker 4: twenty fifteen Rangers did that when they didn't seem like
- 2:17Speaker 4: they were in position to make the playoffs. The twenty
- 2:19Speaker 4: fifteen Blue Jays did that when they got David Price
- 2:21Speaker 4: and Troy Tulwitski. It really changes your what you look
- 2:24Speaker 4: like for the rest of the season. The Pirates have
- 2:26Speaker 4: a nice run differential. They they're not playing up to
- 2:29Speaker 4: those peripheral stats, but they've got a pathway toward the
- 2:31Speaker 4: playoffs in the National League, and if they can supplement
- 2:34Speaker 4: the roster the right way with some aggressive moves, they've got,
- 2:36Speaker 4: you know, Paul Skins at the top of that rotation,
- 2:38Speaker 4: a really nice rotation. If they can get to the postseason,
- 2:40Speaker 4: they become a scarier team than you might otherwise think
- 2:43Speaker 4: because of what they've done so.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Far this year.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that's start a rotation, no bullpen, so maybe they
- 2:50Speaker 3: kind of go deep deep. Maybe you should just put
- 2:52Speaker 3: RP RP relief pitching, relief pitching. But let's go to
- 2:56Speaker 3: the Brewers. Number two team that on that list. For me,
- 3:00Speaker 3: this is a team that has consistently I played there
- 3:03Speaker 3: in twenty eighteen and didn't quite make the big move,
- 3:08Speaker 3: made a bunch of little ancillary moves. Could this be
- 3:11Speaker 3: the year because of the fact that they've done it again,
- 3:14Speaker 3: because of the fact that they downgraded their pitching and
- 3:17Speaker 3: now their pitching is still really good. Is this a
- 3:20Speaker 3: year that you would see them making a push for
- 3:23Speaker 3: possibly one major piece and then a few ancillary pieces.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I'd really like to see it because
- 3:30Speaker 4: this team, they've done it in the regular season for
- 3:32Speaker 4: so long. Last year they finally got over that that
- 3:34Speaker 4: postseason hurl. They hadn't won a postseason series since you
- 3:36Speaker 4: were there at eighteen and got to the NLCS, and
- 3:40Speaker 4: you look at that they've got so many good kind
- 3:42Speaker 4: of middle tier guys that it might be and that
- 3:45Speaker 4: goes through their prospects is they've got more prospects coming,
- 3:48Speaker 4: so they've got a chance to maybe consolidate a little bit,
- 3:50Speaker 4: trade two good pictures to get one great pitcher kind
- 3:53Speaker 4: of thing. And obviously, you know the name that you're
- 3:55Speaker 4: gonna want to bring out there is Trek Schoubl And
- 3:57Speaker 4: you imagine what that rotation looks like with School and
- 4:00Speaker 4: Misroowski at the top of it. You know guys guy
- 4:04Speaker 4: who won two says the last two years, a guy
- 4:06Speaker 4: who might win it this year in the National League.
- 4:08Speaker 4: That becomes a different kind of animal in the postseason.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Or even if they wanted to do something on their infield,
- 4:12Speaker 4: on the left side of the infield, we've got two
- 4:13Speaker 4: good defenders over there in Cooper.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Pratt and Joey Ortiz at third base, but maybe add a.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Little bit of pop to the lineup if they wanted
- 4:19Speaker 4: to make that kind of move so that they've got
- 4:21Speaker 4: different places they can upgrade. There's no again, no significant
- 4:24Speaker 4: weakness on that roster, but maybe more of an opportunity
- 4:27Speaker 4: to take a position that's good and make it great
- 4:30Speaker 4: at the deadline and push them over the top into
- 4:32Speaker 4: a pennant.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Perhaps one of the other teams in the same tier
- 4:36Speaker 3: is the Yankees. The Yankees historically don't do big moves
- 4:41Speaker 3: at the trade deadline. Brian Cashman has said it, He's like,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know what, you know, there's a lot of like
- 4:48Speaker 3: false hopeful teams, So I don't see a lot. He's
- 4:50Speaker 3: already laid out the groundwork across the city from you that. Eh,
- 4:55Speaker 3: you know what, there's probably no reason for us to
- 4:58Speaker 3: go big. Is very ch this year because their biggest
- 5:02Speaker 3: piece and Aaron Judge is out that they do go big.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Yeah, And I think you look at the American League,
- 5:08Speaker 4: like if they were in the Central or the West,
- 5:11Speaker 4: you'd say, you know, just you don't have to do
- 5:13Speaker 4: a whole lot to supplement that regular season roster, get
- 5:16Speaker 4: in the playoffs, do what you can. But because they're
- 5:18Speaker 4: they're trailing Tampa Bay in the East so far and
- 5:21Speaker 4: Judge's status is uncertain going forward, maybe you do want
- 5:24Speaker 4: to supplement that roster for the regular season to make
- 5:26Speaker 4: sure you catch Tampa, make sure you get that first
- 5:29Speaker 4: round by and make sure your playoff path is a
- 5:31Speaker 4: bit easier than it would be if you have to
- 5:33Speaker 4: go on the road in the Division Series and I
- 5:35Speaker 4: have to play a Wildcard Series then go on the
- 5:36Speaker 4: road in the DS. So I think again there's opportunities there.
- 5:40Speaker 4: They're you know, same with their starting rotation. Their starting
- 5:42Speaker 4: rotation is good and deep, especially now with Max Freed
- 5:44Speaker 4: coming off to the IL, but there's maybe an opportunity
- 5:47Speaker 4: to trade two good pitchers for one great one. There's
- 5:50Speaker 4: an opportunity certainly in their bullpen. The back end of
- 5:52Speaker 4: their bullpen could use some supplementation as well. So I
- 5:55Speaker 4: think that's another roster that, you know, it looks good
- 5:58Speaker 4: on paper. I think if everyone is healthy on the
- 6:00Speaker 4: they're still the favorite in the American League, even with
- 6:03Speaker 4: the struggles they've had in the summer. But you know,
- 6:05Speaker 4: there's still some uncertainty there and some chances to get
- 6:08Speaker 4: better and make them a better potential opponent for the
- 6:12Speaker 4: Dodgers or the Brewers or whoever ends up coming out
- 6:14Speaker 4: of the National League.

- 7:13Speaker 1: All right, tim, we're gonna run through a couple of
- 7:14Speaker 1: these here fairly quickly, because there's a couple of them. Honestly,
- 7:17Speaker 1: we don't really care about We're gonna I'm gonna start
- 7:19Speaker 1: with tier seven and tier six because these are like
- 7:21Speaker 1: the worst teams in baseball. Tier seven is the Angels, Mets,
- 7:25Speaker 1: and Giants. They're out of it. We know that, right,
- 7:28Speaker 1: they should be and could be aggressive sellers if they
- 7:30Speaker 1: have pieces that people want, and in the Angels case,
- 7:33Speaker 1: if they decide they'll actually do what they need to do,
- 7:35Speaker 1: which they don't typically do.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Tier six typical sellers, Royals, Rockies, A's again, teams that
- 7:41Speaker 1: are out of it. Yes, they usually do sell because
- 7:44Speaker 1: you know what, they're usually not very good and they're
- 7:45Speaker 1: usually not in it. But see, then it gets interesting
- 7:47Speaker 1: to me when you get into like tier five, the Reds,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I don't think they're in it, right. I don't think
- 7:53Speaker 1: the Reds are in it on tier five, and the
- 7:56Speaker 1: Cardinals are kind of fake in it for me, They've
- 7:58Speaker 1: hung around, they've been pretty good. They've hung around about
- 8:01Speaker 1: five to six games above five hundred. This is where
- 8:03Speaker 1: it starts getting a little more interesting. And then when
- 8:05Speaker 1: you get to tier four is where you're.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Like, what will these teams do?
- 8:09Speaker 1: Because you have the Padres, the Nationals, the Blue Jays,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and the Tigers. Here will the Tigers get rid of
- 8:16Speaker 1: schoobl right? Will the Padres use Mason Miller or a
- 8:19Speaker 1: Michael King. Will the Nationals actually go out and make
- 8:22Speaker 1: a move, which they haven't done for the last few years.
- 8:24Speaker 1: And then the Blue Jays, We've talked about them all
- 8:26Speaker 1: already today they were in they were this close to
- 8:29Speaker 1: winning the World Series. Will they sell and if they
- 8:32Speaker 1: do so, what will the reaction be?
- 8:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean these are the teams that kind of
- 8:36Speaker 4: hold the trade deadline in their hands right now. These
- 8:38Speaker 4: are the pivotal teams that will decide whether this is
- 8:41Speaker 4: a huge seller's market for those you know, seven or
- 8:43Speaker 4: eight teams beneath them, or if we have more of
- 8:46Speaker 4: an even distribution than we usually do. And you think
- 8:48Speaker 4: about the pieces that those teams have. It starts obviously
- 8:50Speaker 4: with Detroit and schoobl Then you've got Mason Miller with
- 8:53Speaker 4: San Diego.
- 8:53Speaker 2: You've got CJ. Abrams with Washington.
- 8:55Speaker 4: You've got Kevin Gosman and Dalton var Show, maybe Jeff
- 8:58Speaker 4: Hoffman with Toronto. Like though those can be you know,
- 9:01Speaker 4: we ranked the best players available at the deadline. I
- 9:04Speaker 4: think those are those are all top ten pieces, so
- 9:07Speaker 4: that those are the guys that if they do become available,
- 9:10Speaker 4: and you know, you look at Aj Preller's a guy
- 9:13Speaker 4: who does not want to sell. Has shown over the
- 9:15Speaker 4: course of his tenure there he does not want to
- 9:16Speaker 4: sell the man. If he does, he can get pretty
- 9:19Speaker 4: much what he gave up last year for Millery. He
- 9:21Speaker 4: might be able to get that kind of package back
- 9:22Speaker 4: for him because of how good he has been during
- 9:25Speaker 4: his time with San Diego.
- 9:27Speaker 2: You know, obviously Scooble is the crown ruel. We have
- 9:30Speaker 2: not seen a picture of his caliber moved at the deadline,
- 9:32Speaker 2: probably since Max schurz Aer in twenty twenty one to
- 9:35Speaker 2: the Dodgers. If Abrams is.
- 9:37Speaker 4: There, it's rare to see a shortstop with that much
- 9:40Speaker 4: team control moved, so that there's a real opportunity for
- 9:43Speaker 4: the deadline to be owned by those two, by those
- 9:45Speaker 4: teams if they.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Decide to sell.
- 9:47Speaker 4: And that makes me wonder, like, you know, if in
- 9:49Speaker 4: a vacuum he might decide to buy, because you're only
- 9:51Speaker 4: a couple of games out of the playoffs, if you
- 9:53Speaker 4: decide to zag and go the other way and sell,
- 9:55Speaker 4: because there's such an opportunity there to capitalize on.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You said, Aj kind of glazed over the Reds a
- 10:02Speaker 3: little bit. They're out. Are there any pieces that you
- 10:06Speaker 3: see that the Reds could take advantage of this market,
- 10:09Speaker 3: like you were just talking about.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I think the biggest one is probably Nick Lodolo if
- 10:14Speaker 4: they wanted to move him. He's got an extra year
- 10:16Speaker 4: of team control, a guy who has looked really good
- 10:19Speaker 4: for flashes, but hasn't kind of put it together for
- 10:21Speaker 4: one full season. You know, if a guy like Joe
- 10:24Speaker 4: Ryan isn't made available, if other pitchers with kind of
- 10:26Speaker 4: that one extra year of control aren't out there, then
- 10:28Speaker 4: maybe Lodolo becomes that kind of plan B secondary piece
- 10:33Speaker 4: Compared to some other guys. You know, Spencer Steer is
- 10:35Speaker 4: like a nice utility piece. Maybe not a guy who
- 10:38Speaker 4: you're planning on starting for you every day for a
- 10:40Speaker 4: postseason contender, but a guy who fits in, fills in
- 10:43Speaker 4: the gaps for you everywhere. I think if like Steve
- 10:45Speaker 4: Pierce with the Red Sox in twenty eighteen, a guy
- 10:47Speaker 4: who became such a big piece of what they did
- 10:50Speaker 4: that postseason, Steer could serve that kind of role. He's
- 10:52Speaker 4: also got some gears of team control. You know, they're
- 10:54Speaker 4: not going to move the really top guys. Obviously, they
- 10:56Speaker 4: extended Burns, they've extended Green, They've got Ali de la Cruz.
- 10:59Speaker 2: They're gonna move someone like him.
- 11:00Speaker 4: But really the next part of the roster I think
- 11:02Speaker 4: does provide them some chances to capitalize on the market.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Makes sense.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Let's go up one more tier. Let's go to tier three,
- 11:09Speaker 1: because again the one and two, I mean, I know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: Tier two Dodgers, Braves, Raised, Mariners, Guardians. These are teams
- 11:14Speaker 1: that are in it and they're gonna make moves, are
- 11:15Speaker 1: at least gonna try to right. But again, Tier four
- 11:18Speaker 1: and Tier three are the ones. This is the one
- 11:19Speaker 1: trending to. The Byside Rangers are right there with the Mariners.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I don't know why they wouldn't buy, try and buy.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Some of the Red Sox are about. I have won
- 11:25Speaker 1: fourteen in a row and they're probably gonna win fifteen
- 11:27Speaker 1: in a row. So they're definitely gonna have to do
- 11:30Speaker 1: something because Craig Brozil wants to basically go ninety ninety boogle.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I was right to everybody out there after the way
- 11:36Speaker 1: they started, the White Sox haven't been this good since
- 11:38Speaker 1: lord knows when. Right the Marlins, I actually don't agree
- 11:42Speaker 1: with this. I think they're trending down a little bit
- 11:44Speaker 1: because of how they're playing diamondbacks, they probably won't do anything.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But then you get to the bottom, right, Twins, Orioles, Astros.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Are they really playoff possibility teams? With the Orioles, I
- 11:53Speaker 1: know they went on a long winning streak, they asked
- 11:55Speaker 1: are they are these teams really gonna make moves to
- 11:58Speaker 1: try to win this year and more their future down
- 12:00Speaker 1: the road.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I think these are teams that we looked at kind
- 12:04Speaker 4: of where their front offices are right now. You know
- 12:06Speaker 4: you've got in Houston, You've got Dana Brown in the
- 12:08Speaker 4: last year of his contract, the guy who has said
- 12:10Speaker 4: consistently we're gonna buy, We're gonna buy, We're gonna buy.
- 12:13Speaker 4: That's a team that that look if they turn and
- 12:15Speaker 4: trade Jeremy Paineer or Josh Hater, uh though those are
- 12:18Speaker 4: two pretty big pieces that they could make available. Uh,
- 12:20Speaker 4: but you know they're between between Brown and Joe Spota,
- 12:24Speaker 4: there's some extra urgency on them to win this year.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I think the same is true of Michael Lias in Baltimore.
- 12:29Speaker 4: After the way last season went, there was an expectation
- 12:31Speaker 4: that they would bounce back after spending some money in
- 12:33Speaker 4: the off season, making some bigger moves and they've gotten
- 12:35Speaker 4: themselves back into it over the last two weeks. And
- 12:38Speaker 4: then with Minnesota, you know, you've got the new control
- 12:41Speaker 4: person from the Pollad family talking a much bigger game
- 12:44Speaker 4: than they have the last couple of years that they
- 12:46Speaker 4: they know they need to win back a fan base
- 12:48Speaker 4: that's been kind of resigned to things the way the
- 12:51Speaker 4: way the spending has moved.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Down the last few years.
- 12:53Speaker 4: You know, if if, if we don't hear that from
- 12:55Speaker 4: the from the front officer ownership, Yeah, we're probablyutting the
- 12:57Speaker 4: Twins more in the in Tier four or Tier five
- 13:00Speaker 4: because of the losing streak that they're on as well.
- 13:02Speaker 4: But I think, you know, those teams have talked to
- 13:04Speaker 4: a bigger game about trying to buy, so I think
- 13:06Speaker 4: they're gonna look for as many reasons to buy as
- 13:09Speaker 4: possible compared to team like you mentioned the Cardinals, compared
- 13:12Speaker 4: to a team like that that you know is more or
- 13:14Speaker 4: less okay with falling a little bit out of it,
- 13:16Speaker 4: but it allows them to take advantage of the market.
- 13:19Speaker 3: All right, let's talk about the big board of actual
- 13:22Speaker 3: players that are available and how it's changed at the
- 13:25Speaker 3: athletic how it's changed from having give me the top
- 13:29Speaker 3: three that are gone from that list because their team
- 13:32Speaker 3: is still contending, and three that maybe are added to
- 13:36Speaker 3: that list because you know what their team's fortunes have changed.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, like we still have Wilson Contreras and
- 13:45Speaker 4: Sunny Gray toward the top of that board.
- 13:47Speaker 2: But you know, we put that out Monday, the teams
- 13:48Speaker 2: can teams won more since then.
- 13:50Speaker 4: So it's you know, that's how fluid it can be.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Like we didn't have Mason Miller on it yet. We
- 13:54Speaker 4: will have the next update obviously because of where the
- 13:56Speaker 4: padres are now. So I think I think that's changed
- 13:58Speaker 4: since the first time we did it weeks ago. You know,
- 14:01Speaker 4: we've had it guys from Toronto like Kevin Gosman and
- 14:04Speaker 4: Dalton VARs Show. So I think it's a bit more
- 14:09Speaker 4: top heavy than it was initially. But Boston holds a
