- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overlandural podcast. I'm your host,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Scott Brady, and I am here with my illustrious co
- 0:10Speaker 1: host Matt Scott. Hello, your last days as a single man,
- 0:14Speaker 1: my last actual bit of work as a single person.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I've made it quite clear, I am shutting off for
- 0:21Speaker 1: the next three weeks. I'm focusing on Laura, Yes, which
- 0:24Speaker 1: is awesome.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's been funny. We've started this business together
- 0:28Speaker 2: and we need time away from it to grow it
- 0:31Speaker 2: and yeah, relationships.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So after this podcast, you're done until you step back
- 0:37Speaker 1: off the plane from Africa.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I am not working until the thirteenth. That's amazing, very clear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I am incredibly incredibly excited.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Well, not only am I grateful that you're here, obviously
- 0:47Speaker 1: the listeners are going to be thankful that you're here
- 0:49Speaker 1: as well, because we have a very fun, awesome podcast. Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 1: to discuss today, which is the twenty twenty one Ford Bronco.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And now for a quick break from one of our supporters.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Let's take a minute to recognize one of the godfathers
- 1:03Speaker 3: of overlanding and onboard power and off grid towing. The
- 1:07Speaker 3: folks at red Arc build the toughest, most versatile power
- 1:10Speaker 3: management electronics known demand and right now red Arc is
- 1:13Speaker 3: sponsoring a twenty thousand dollars vehicle upgrade and expense paid adventure.

- 1:33Speaker 3: So get to it and power your Wild with red.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Arc, which is beautiful looking. Yeah, I mean one of
- 1:40Speaker 2: the best exterior designs. Yeah, I think that we will
- 1:44Speaker 2: see on that modern internal combustion era. Hi continually refer to.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, We've had a lot of test vehicles and I
- 1:52Speaker 1: have never once had one that caused quite the pandemonium.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I have never had somebody in my family ask for
- 1:58Speaker 1: a ride in a press car before.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Wait, yeah, pretty much. I don't. I don't think so. Yeah,
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't think so. Like a little fanfare around it
- 2:07Speaker 2: in big time.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I mean, you try to go to the grocery store
- 2:11Speaker 1: and you get out and there's people taking pictures around.
- 2:14Speaker 2: I would love to say that women are flocking towards
- 2:17Speaker 2: me for driving to Ford Bronco mainly it's men in
- 2:20Speaker 2: cargo shorts. They'll have they'll have a various patches affixed
- 2:26Speaker 2: to them, to their bodies. Yeah, that's right. Male genitalia
- 2:31Speaker 2: attracting magnet is the way I would maybe describe the
- 2:34Speaker 2: Ford Bronco. I get a lot of thumbs up from dudes.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Yeah, but it seems like it seems like it's also
- 2:41Speaker 1: going to be very popular with everyone, just like a
- 2:44Speaker 1: just like a Wrangler is. I think it's going to
- 2:46Speaker 1: be really a cute face, right it does. It kind
- 2:49Speaker 1: of transcends gender totally. I mean it's a it's a
- 2:53Speaker 1: classic looking yeah, you know it's the modern classic, right, It's.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Really good looking. I mean there's little things that you
- 2:59Speaker 2: can kind of it, but overall, if you have exactly
- 3:03Speaker 2: two minutes, three minutes, yeah, it's a pretty good car.
- 3:05Speaker 2: It's got some problems. The end podcast is over.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Podcast is over, but it is it is totally different, right,
- 3:13Speaker 1: which I think the Wrangler desperately needed competition. Like this
- 3:17Speaker 1: is where I'll give GIEP a lot of credit is
- 3:19Speaker 1: that they never stop taking it very serious. There is
- 3:22Speaker 1: there's other vehicles in our segment, like, for example, the
- 3:25Speaker 1: fore Runner is a good example.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Of that.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it is a great vehicle, but that because
- 3:30Speaker 1: they don't have competitive pressure, it is one of the
- 3:32Speaker 1: best choices in the segment.
- 3:34Speaker 2: They don't need it. But toyotas are currently great because
- 3:37Speaker 2: they don't break. Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Well, and it's also I mean a four runner is
- 3:41Speaker 1: great off road, and it's it's this kind of classic interpretations,
- 3:45Speaker 1: this swan song of like the the one to fifty
- 3:48Speaker 1: platform land Cruiser, and.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I love five speed transmissions and its really outdated engines
- 3:53Speaker 2: that get horrible gas miileage.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Yeah, but they're simple and they run, they do, And
- 3:58Speaker 1: but I like it when in our industry has more
- 4:01Speaker 1: competitive pressure, like we're seeing in the mid sized trucks.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Well you already saw Jeep in comparison or in retaliation
- 4:09Speaker 2: or or response to the Sasquatch package, you can now
- 4:13Speaker 2: get four fifty six gears. Yep. I want to say,
- 4:17Speaker 2: they're calling in a one and a half inch lift
- 4:18Speaker 2: and thirty five inch tires on a Wrangler. What is it?
- 4:21Speaker 1: The recon? Is that what extreme recon? Past extreme recon? Yeah,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and that's good. But right, so then I think that
- 4:27Speaker 1: anytime we see this kind of competitive pressure, we're also
- 4:31Speaker 1: going to most likely see some response from land Rover
- 4:34Speaker 1: with the Defender. We're going to see them coming out
- 4:37Speaker 1: with packages for the Defender that are going to be
- 4:39Speaker 1: more off road capable, because I would say that even
- 4:43Speaker 1: more so than the Wrangler, that the Bronco is a
- 4:46Speaker 1: price shopping or a competitive shopping decision for a Defender,
- 4:50Speaker 1: So which isn't you know, that's not a coincidence.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Because it's somewhere in that spectrum, you know. I think
- 4:58Speaker 2: one of the things that's a Defender does is that
- 5:00Speaker 2: does so well is that at the lower end of
- 5:03Speaker 2: its price range, it still feels like a quality land
- 5:09Speaker 2: River product. If you're maybe not getting winds or leather
- 5:12Speaker 2: as you would in the X, but on the s E,
- 5:16Speaker 2: I believe it is that's the lowest one it could
- 5:19Speaker 2: be whatever the base model, whatever the base model rate.
- 5:21Speaker 2: On the you get like some interesting fabrics they do
- 5:25Speaker 2: that really cool green textile to it. You know, you're
- 5:30Speaker 2: still kind of getting a lot of the same functionality
- 5:33Speaker 2: and quality.
- 5:34Speaker 1: That you are and you still get the airbag suspension
- 5:36Speaker 1: system which is super comfortable. So I like the fact
- 5:40Speaker 1: that Wrangler now has this pressure in the space. And
- 5:45Speaker 1: GEEP has responded if you look at in the last year,
- 5:48Speaker 1: they have revised their payload capacities. So we've always been
- 5:52Speaker 1: a little bit critical of the Wrangler for having basically
- 5:55Speaker 1: one thousand pounds payload. And now if you speck out
- 5:58Speaker 1: a Rubicon and you look at the specs teen hundred
- 6:00Speaker 1: pound payload. Yeah, so that's a big improvement. It gives
- 6:03Speaker 1: you a lot more latitude. But then when we look
- 6:06Speaker 1: at the Bronco, the Bronco's got one thousand pound payload,
- 6:08Speaker 1: so it matches the old old Wrangler. So JEEP is
- 6:11Speaker 1: definitely staying ahead of the game with the recon package
- 6:14Speaker 1: and everything else. And it is certainly, I believe common
- 6:18Speaker 1: and important to compare the Bronco against the Wrangler, and
- 6:21Speaker 1: we'll do that at the end of the podcast. But
- 6:23Speaker 1: you drove it and I drove it. Yeah, we had
- 6:25Speaker 1: a we had a press car.
- 6:27Speaker 2: If we kind of had it on and off, you
- 6:29Speaker 2: drove it more in technical off road, Yep. I daily
- 6:32Speaker 2: drove it for a bit. I did some dirt road stuff. Yeah,
- 6:35Speaker 2: it's it's cool. I think that if I could, in
- 6:38Speaker 2: a couple of sentences describe the Bronco, it is it
- 6:43Speaker 2: falls victim to that expectation reality. The exterior design is great,
- 6:48Speaker 2: the interior design is great. I think the execution on
- 6:51Speaker 2: the materials that they've chosen in the vehicle, Like the
- 6:56Speaker 2: steering wheel looks like it came from a Ford Fiesta,
- 6:59Speaker 2: the switch gear looks like it came from a Ford Fiesta.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I kind of feel bad, but in one of my
- 7:04Speaker 2: little Instagram things, I kind of like scratched the dash
- 7:06Speaker 2: and I don't like have monster fingernails or anything, it
- 7:10Speaker 2: actually scratched it. Like the materials that they have chosen
- 7:13Speaker 2: are just really cheap. That's not to be mistaken with
- 7:18Speaker 2: being utilitarian. There's a difference between being utilitarian and being
- 7:22Speaker 2: cheap because we have the hottest new product and we
- 7:24Speaker 2: can get away with it. And that's kind of what
- 7:27Speaker 2: certain aspects of the vehicle, you know, made me think.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I've owned a lot of Fords. Please don't mistake me
- 7:32Speaker 2: for being like a Ford hater. I had a brand
- 7:34Speaker 2: new twenty sixteen Super Duty King Ranch. I had a
- 7:37Speaker 2: twenty eighteen Raptor that was brand new. I've got an
- 7:40Speaker 2: Earth Rummer that's on a F five fifty. I'm not
- 7:42Speaker 2: anti Ford. You know. For example, you could get a
- 7:45Speaker 2: three point five Eco Boost King Ranch F one fifty
- 7:49Speaker 2: or the same sticker that this Bronco is. And I
- 7:53Speaker 2: can't help but think that because there is more competition
- 7:57Speaker 2: in that segment, Ford was willing to spend more money.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I think it was an economic decision. Like, you had
- 8:02Speaker 2: some great designers. I know that they worked with a
- 8:05Speaker 2: lot of fantastic folks in the off road industry, particularly
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the Baja side of things. They gave him a
- 8:09Speaker 2: lot of great feedback. And then, like a being counter
- 8:12Speaker 2: in you know, Detroit, was like, you know, no, we
- 8:15Speaker 2: have to use the cheapest materials possible because we've got
- 8:18Speaker 2: a cash cow in our hands. Right. Just my opinion,
- 8:22Speaker 2: like when you when you open the door, like it
- 8:24Speaker 2: feels like the door flexes and like the you know,
- 8:27Speaker 2: the window vibrates and rattles, and then the door panel moves.
- 8:32Speaker 2: That concerns me because like every Ford I've owned rattles
- 8:36Speaker 2: after some off road use. Right, Wrangler doesn't or Runner doesn't.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I mean Defender probably does effort. Sorry, at first I thought, well,
- 8:48Speaker 2: maybe they need to make the doors really lightweight because
- 8:51Speaker 2: you can remove them.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think you make a valid point. I
- 8:54Speaker 1: think that they did do what they could to make
- 8:57Speaker 1: them lightweight. It's like it's forty five pounds for the
- 8:59Speaker 1: rear or fifty five pounds for the front door so
- 9:01Speaker 1: that someone can lift them. You showed me like the
- 9:03Speaker 1: example of that door handle, like the components of.
- 9:07Speaker 2: The door rtles, three different components, and like if you
- 9:09Speaker 2: kind of like grab it from a weird angle, you
- 9:11Speaker 2: can like get your finger flex at time and it'll
- 9:15Speaker 2: like pinch it. It's just like three pieces of cheap
- 9:18Speaker 2: molded plastic assembled together. But then here's the thing that
- 9:22Speaker 2: frustrates me is like the F one fifty, which is
- 9:24Speaker 2: realistically runs almost the same price range as this vehicle,
- 9:28Speaker 2: has like these wonderful rubber solid door handles. So that's
- 9:32Speaker 2: maybe what frustrates me is they know how to do interiors.
- 9:36Speaker 2: They have cars, they have trucks that go off road
- 9:38Speaker 2: that have massaging seats. Sure, and again it's not a
- 9:42Speaker 2: matter of oh well, I don't carbott in tiar taking
- 9:44Speaker 2: it off road, as some people you know have said
- 9:47Speaker 2: to me. It's like, dude, it's not that it's that
- 9:49Speaker 2: the materials just are cheap. You know, if you put
- 9:51Speaker 2: a dog in that car, like like I could, I
- 9:54Speaker 2: did not feel right bringing our Greyhound in that because
- 9:57Speaker 2: I thought it would scratch that the crap out of
- 10:00Speaker 2: the interior.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Well, you make a good point. When we took it
- 10:03Speaker 1: out with the video crew, which you guys will all listening,
- 10:06Speaker 1: we'll be able to see our evaluation of the vehicle
- 10:10Speaker 1: on YouTube about the time that this drops. When we
- 10:13Speaker 1: just had a bag like a Duffel bag in the
- 10:15Speaker 1: back and it and it did wear on the surface
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the back of the center console after just a
- 10:22Speaker 1: few hours of use. You know, there's definitely experiences that
- 10:25Speaker 1: I have that have have validated what you're saying. And
- 10:28Speaker 1: it's it's too bad because like when I look at
- 10:31Speaker 1: the interior, when I look at the interior, it's exactly
- 10:34Speaker 1: what I would want it to look like. It's great,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and like even the seat material feels like it's something
- 10:40Speaker 1: that's going to be easy to clean. But it doesn't
- 10:43Speaker 1: have that cheap vinyl feel to it.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Have you tried wearing shorts in Arizona with whatever that
- 10:49Speaker 2: material has made? I have not seen use case. I
- 10:52Speaker 2: will tell you that my rose colored skin sticks to
- 10:56Speaker 2: it in a painful manner. It's like something that they
- 11:02Speaker 2: would use for like incontinent hospital patients like, I don't
- 11:09Speaker 2: know how else to say it, Like, it's it's not
- 11:11Speaker 2: that it was a it's like somebody from Detroit that's
- 11:14Speaker 2: never actually been off road has gone and said, oh,
- 11:17Speaker 2: this is great and it's real cheap, and we could
- 11:19Speaker 2: get a great deal on it and get this much
- 11:20Speaker 2: sence back to our shareholders. But like they could have
- 11:23Speaker 2: gone for like a nice cloth that was probably the
- 11:25Speaker 2: same price. Yeah maybe, I mean I liked the look
- 11:28Speaker 2: of it and it felt like it was a little
- 11:30Speaker 2: more durable than like the dash for example. But no,
- 11:33Speaker 2: I didn't do the shorts because I most of the
- 11:35Speaker 2: time don't wear shites. I will tell you. Laura Satin
- 11:39Speaker 2: at once and was like, nope, yeah, it does not breathe.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Well that's that's a good point. But I'm saying these
- 11:45Speaker 2: things is I want the vehicle to be good. Like
- 11:48Speaker 2: the seat designed, very comfortable, very nice. I like how
- 11:51Speaker 2: it looks. I like how the interior looks. I like
- 11:53Speaker 2: the functionality of the interior. I like how everything is designed.
- 11:57Speaker 2: They've clearly consulted with a lot of you know, for
- 12:00Speaker 2: real drive experts and professionals in asking what they wanted,
- 12:04Speaker 2: and then an accountant got involved. Yeah, and you know
- 12:07Speaker 2: how that always goes right. But the drive line's fantastic.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I mean, the drive line is class leading. Yeah. I
- 12:12Speaker 2: really like that too. So I love that tense speed.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I had that tense speed in the Raptor flawless transmission.
- 12:17Speaker 2: You can barely feel it shift. It just it is
- 12:20Speaker 2: tuned to get to that peak you know, torque output.
- 12:24Speaker 2: This this particular engine was the two point seven Leader
- 12:27Speaker 2: Eco Boost. So that's and I don't have this memorized.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Three hundred and thirty horse power on presumably premium fuel
- 12:34Speaker 2: and four hundred and fifteen pound feet of torque if
- 12:36Speaker 2: you use regular fuel, it is three fifteen and four
- 12:39Speaker 2: to ten. That's amazing. I love the fact that Ford
- 12:41Speaker 2: does this though, that if you if you the ECU
- 12:44Speaker 2: is self learning that if you are in Baja or
- 12:47Speaker 2: wherever you are, Like I've been down in Baha with
- 12:49Speaker 2: the Raptor and you're in Bahia de Los Angeles and
- 12:53Speaker 2: you get eighty five, yeah, it's like do you want
- 12:56Speaker 2: some gas or do you not want it? The fact
- 12:58Speaker 2: that it's not specifically tuned.
- 13:00Speaker 1: For that, just get the magna like eighty five megas? No,
- 13:05Speaker 1: what do they call it? Pre Premo exactly.
- 13:08Speaker 3: No.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So the transmission and the drive line combination fantastic, class leading.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Maybe not as like fast as I would have thought
- 13:16Speaker 2: it was for a premium engine option, but Ford kind
- 13:19Speaker 2: of does that is they're like, oh, you want your
- 13:20Speaker 2: V eight cool, I want your hybrid cool. You want
- 13:22Speaker 2: this or this or this. They give a lot of options,
- 13:25Speaker 2: you know, it just it keeps it in the power
- 13:27Speaker 2: band and it just it goes. It's got a real
- 13:30Speaker 2: beefy mid range. Yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And the transmission is also self learning, and I found
- 13:36Speaker 1: that anytime I like to try to drive a vehicle
- 13:39Speaker 1: in manual mode just so that I can have some
- 13:42Speaker 1: driver intervention. But I actually found that I didn't like
- 13:45Speaker 1: that many gears. You're slower than the transmission. Yeah, you
- 13:48Speaker 1: have to preemptively shift because it's fairly slow to shift
- 13:52Speaker 1: in manual mode. I just found myself leaving it in.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think you know there there are
- 13:58Speaker 2: twice as many gears. Yeah as a Forerunner, Yeah, there are.
- 14:04Speaker 2: You know the I know that it has more gears
- 14:06Speaker 2: than the Wrangler, which has the more the Z the
- 14:09Speaker 2: z f ADHP. I'm not going to say that it's
- 14:11Speaker 2: a better transmission than the ADHP. I mean that ADHP
- 14:14Speaker 2: is used in everything from a Jeep Wrangler, uh to
- 14:18Speaker 2: a Rolls Royce Ghost to an Aston Martin you know,
- 14:21Speaker 2: dB eleven. It is a great transmission. But for most people,
- 14:26Speaker 2: this is this is pretty good. And I'm and I'm curious,
- 14:29Speaker 2: as we've talked about this idea of competition, what that
- 14:32Speaker 2: will make Jeep do.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and I wonder, I wonder if the ten speed
- 14:36Speaker 1: is just so well suited to a turbocharged engine. I mean,
- 14:41Speaker 1: it just it seems like if you can keep it
- 14:43Speaker 1: in the turbo boost by shifting more often, and you're
- 14:46Speaker 1: just getting a lot better overall performance out of it.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I I thought it
- 14:52Speaker 2: was great. I thought that the chassis was fantastic. It
- 14:54Speaker 2: has a really quite unique rear suspension architecture with a
- 14:59Speaker 2: you know, kind of a trailing arm, quite a beefy
- 15:01Speaker 2: trailing arm, which is why it's so good high speed
- 15:03Speaker 2: and dirt. And then it actually has kind of a
- 15:06Speaker 2: like a it has a coil over it does so
- 15:09Speaker 2: for the aftermarket, it's what people are going to be
- 15:12Speaker 2: able to do on the aftermarket. Like I was, I
- 15:16Speaker 2: was talking to a good buddy of mine, I guess
- 15:19Speaker 2: who will have to remain nameless in this, and one
- 15:22Speaker 2: of his friends is working on the Ford Race Team thing,
- 15:27Speaker 2: and the performance they're getting out of this thing is,
- 15:30Speaker 2: you know, beating their Bronco R. Wow. You know whether
- 15:33Speaker 2: or not that's marketing speak, I can't verify, but but
- 15:36Speaker 2: I can see it, you know, to be able to
- 15:40Speaker 2: lift the rear without really having to worry about as
- 15:44Speaker 2: many different angles and control arms and track bars and
- 15:48Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff.
- 15:49Speaker 1: And the angle that those those coilovers are at definitely
- 15:53Speaker 1: is going to allow for quite a bit of lift.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:55Speaker 1: The front I thought was tuned just about perfect for
- 15:59Speaker 1: my knee, and that's where the real you see, the
- 16:02Speaker 1: real benefit over the Wrangler is the independent front suspension.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I know, heresy, heresy, heresy.
- 16:07Speaker 2: But like no IFS for most situations, is better than
- 16:11Speaker 2: a solid axle. I mean, as we were talking before this,
- 16:14Speaker 2: does the Wrangler probably have more absolute capability than the Bronco? Yes?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Is the Wrangler going to be maybe easier to modify
- 16:24Speaker 2: and have less of a ceiling than an IFS system? Yes,
- 16:27Speaker 2: but we're talking about a car that has front rear
- 16:30Speaker 2: lockers thirty five inch tires. That's factory designed around that
- 16:33Speaker 2: for ifs, So you're not talking about like you know,
- 16:36Speaker 2: wonky control arm angles on a Forerunner to fit thirty threes.
- 16:40Speaker 2: You're talking about proper oe level total suspension angles and
- 16:45Speaker 2: handling on thirty fives. And it doesn't feel like it's
- 16:47Speaker 2: on thirty fives. Nope, it drives great.
- 16:50Speaker 1: And I think that they got away with the thirty
- 16:51Speaker 1: fives because they built it into way the way that
- 16:53Speaker 1: they designed the body. Yeah, it was designed around it exactly,
- 16:56Speaker 1: so they can take a huge tire in those wheel wells.
- 16:59Speaker 1: The rear suspension and for me, so higher speed dirt travel,
- 17:03Speaker 1: probably driving it at sixty five to seventy percent of
- 17:06Speaker 1: what I would drive like at race speeds, and for
- 17:09Speaker 1: this kind of class vehicle, it was. It was really excellent.
- 17:13Speaker 1: There's a couple of things that you have to manage
- 17:15Speaker 1: if you go into Baja mode that helps a lot.
- 17:17Speaker 1: It's very well tuned for that. The rear suspension. I'd
- 17:21Speaker 1: love to see a little bit more compression travel, and
- 17:23Speaker 1: I think that's going to be easily addressed with the aftermarket.
- 17:26Speaker 1: And then it's it's fairly fermine compression. So with no
- 17:30Speaker 1: weight in there, highly sprung.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I think that translates into why you're not seeing much
- 17:35Speaker 2: body rolled right, But I think the faster you're going
- 17:38Speaker 2: and if you're getting into any kind of whoops or
- 17:41Speaker 2: stuff where you're going to be, you know, using the
- 17:44Speaker 2: length of the travel, I can see why they did that,
- 17:47Speaker 2: but I feel it works great in that regard. I
- 17:49Speaker 2: feel like if you did a five to eight percent
- 17:53Speaker 2: softer rate, it would fix all the problems that I think.
- 17:57Speaker 1: So that's my that's my feeling. I'd like to see
- 18:01Speaker 1: slightly softer spring rate, no change in compression damping. I
- 18:05Speaker 1: like the rebound that it's got, lots of control, very
- 18:07Speaker 1: little porpoising. And then if I could see even even
- 18:10Speaker 1: fifteen millimeters of more height in the rear, more or
- 18:14Speaker 1: more spring length in the room, that would really help.
- 18:17Speaker 1: But I mean, I was driving it fast through this
- 18:19Speaker 1: wash and you know where we had posted sentries and
- 18:23Speaker 1: everything else like that, and these are big events and
- 18:25Speaker 1: this truck just soaked it up.
- 18:27Speaker 2: It's really good.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And then when you're of course, when the car starts
- 18:31Speaker 1: to starts to rotate on you and that turbo comes on,
- 18:35Speaker 1: then things get really lively. But they actually did a
- 18:38Speaker 1: great job of being of tuning it the vehicle stability
- 18:42Speaker 1: control enough that it kind of knows when it's going
- 18:46Speaker 1: to come onto the pipe like that. It does a
- 18:48Speaker 1: pretty good job of not letting you over there also,
- 18:50Speaker 1: so you know there's going to be the warthog or
- 18:52Speaker 1: whatever they're content that's the Raptor version. There's already been
- 18:55Speaker 1: some you know, some spy phootos that have kind of
- 18:58Speaker 1: leaked out or people have seen it in the while.
- 19:00Speaker 1: What Ford is presenting on this chassis I do not
- 19:04Speaker 1: feel is the capability of the chassis. And that's what's
- 19:06Speaker 1: really exciting to me. It's gotten so much, so much more.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I mean, this is a stock vehicle and it is
- 19:12Speaker 1: so good.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I Mean, that's the thing for everybody that's listening to
- 19:16Speaker 1: take away is unless it's super important that you've got
- 19:19Speaker 1: forty inch tires on your Wrangler, I mean, for this,
- 19:23Speaker 1: for a travel vehicle, it is incredibly capable out of
- 19:26Speaker 1: the box. I don't know that I would change even
- 19:29Speaker 1: even the tires are great. I don't know that I
- 19:31Speaker 1: would change anything out of this vehicle other than again
- 19:35Speaker 1: maybe like a fifteen millimeter longer spring and the no that's.
- 19:38Speaker 2: One thing I would change. It would be a top
- 19:40Speaker 2: that didn't give me a headache, oh at forty five
- 19:43Speaker 2: mile an hour from whistling. But well, so they're recalling
- 19:46Speaker 2: all of them, and I think that that, you know,
- 19:48Speaker 2: they're they're they're doing recalls on vehicles that haven't even
- 19:51Speaker 2: been delivered. They've had to push things back, and I
- 19:53Speaker 2: think that that even goes to say that maybe they're
- 19:56Speaker 2: realizing they pushed the cheap envelope a little bit too much.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Didn't know we got a great is it Wabosto making
- 20:02Speaker 1: the top?
- 20:03Speaker 2: Yeah, but of course you're gonna throw the supplier under
- 20:05Speaker 2: the bus. Yeah, maybe that supplier just made that to
- 20:08Speaker 2: the design and that they were handed a CAD file. Yeah,
- 20:11Speaker 2: by that, you know, by by Ford Design or Foreign
- 20:14Speaker 2: engineering or whatever it is. You know, I could hear
- 20:17Speaker 2: the argument of quality control issues. If you looked at ours.
- 20:19Speaker 2: There's one side that kind of sat about a half
- 20:22Speaker 2: an inch.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Over totally, and there's big waves in it where it's.
- 20:25Speaker 2: But sitting down with like a well an aerospace engineer
- 20:29Speaker 2: that I cannot hope to re memory, it's like, oh, well, yeah,
- 20:32Speaker 2: it's making this noise because of this and this and
- 20:33Speaker 2: this and this and this because of how it was designed.
- 20:35Speaker 2: This is a guy that designed the Apache helicopter. I'm
- 20:38Speaker 2: going to say, he knows what he's talking about a
- 20:40Speaker 2: little bit, you know, so maybe that's where it bit him. Yeah,
- 20:44Speaker 2: And and and call myself out, which I which I
- 20:47Speaker 2: think is important to say. I know that I'm I'm
- 20:49Speaker 2: complaining about the interior, and I'm complaining about kind of
- 20:52Speaker 2: fit and finish of certain things. This one is a
- 20:56Speaker 2: very early production vehicle. That being said, there have been
- 20:59Speaker 2: broughtcos that have been delivered already to customers, so I
- 21:03Speaker 2: don't know how valid that is. But we did get
- 21:05Speaker 2: an amazing chassis. So yeah, you know, maybe Ford put
- 21:09Speaker 2: the money into different things. You know, if somebody was
- 21:12Speaker 2: going to say to me, hey, let's get a let's
- 21:14Speaker 2: get a totally ball or chassis that has all this capability.
- 21:18Speaker 2: But to do that, we're going to have to have
- 21:20Speaker 2: a Ford Fiesta. We're gonna have to have a fourteen
- 21:22Speaker 2: thousand dollars Currententier on a fifty a thousand dollars test vehicle.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You know, like I'd consider it. Yeah, and that may
- 21:27Speaker 1: be the result. Like we were talking about before we
- 21:29Speaker 1: hit the record button. I think that I'm in this
- 21:32Speaker 1: particular case with this vehicle, I'm actually having a little
- 21:37Speaker 1: bit of difficulty overcoming my positive bias towards it.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so I'm viewing the vehicle. Don't worry, all of
- 21:43Speaker 2: Instagram's in the same boat. I'm viewing the vehicle with
- 21:47Speaker 2: these rose colored glasses. Because the functional.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Performance of it, the actual functionality of it on the
- 21:54Speaker 1: trail on the dirt as a trial vehicles, I've been
- 21:58Speaker 1: so impressed by it. And it's also it looks so
- 22:01Speaker 1: charming that it's like, literally it's won me over because
- 22:06Speaker 1: it looks it's so it's so charming.
- 22:08Speaker 2: But it's really that's why it's so great.
- 22:09Speaker 1: That you and I have the chance to kind of
- 22:11Speaker 1: riff on these things, because you may be in the
- 22:14Speaker 1: same boat with a different vehicle and I'm like, well
- 22:15Speaker 1: what about ye? And that's really it's really important because
- 22:18Speaker 1: after you shared all that with me, I sat down
- 22:20Speaker 1: in the car this morning before they went and picked
- 22:23Speaker 1: it up, and I'm like, yeah, look at that. I mean,
- 22:25Speaker 1: the dash, you could definitely tell it needs it needs
- 22:28Speaker 1: to have less of a of a scratchable surface on
- 22:31Speaker 1: the dash, and it needs to have like maybe a
- 22:33Speaker 1: harder finish, and then there's lots of little touch points
- 22:37Speaker 1: that are beyond this functionality that I find so useful
- 22:40Speaker 1: that you're right, are definitely.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, I was just I was at
- 22:45Speaker 2: Monterey Car Week, uh and chatting with a few other
- 22:48Speaker 2: journals that that have had access to the vehicle, and
- 22:51Speaker 2: it's kind of it's it's kind of seems to be
- 22:53Speaker 2: a similar a similar thing. Everybody loves it. Everybody loves
- 22:56Speaker 2: how it looks. Damn that interior is cheap. Yeah, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 2: but hey, this is this is a new vehicle. You know,
- 23:03Speaker 2: this is the second greatest Bronco they've ever made. There's
- 23:07Speaker 2: the first one that was amazing, and then they messed
- 23:09Speaker 2: up every successive one and then this one's number two,
- 23:13Speaker 2: and but this one has potential to be. Now it
- 23:16Speaker 2: doesn't have potential to be number one. You can't overtake
- 23:18Speaker 2: the heritage of like it's that's difficult.
- 23:20Speaker 1: But in so many ways, I mean, it is a
- 23:22Speaker 1: better vehicle. It is just like we talk about an
- 23:24Speaker 1: LG and a JK compared to any previous Wrangler, it's
- 23:27Speaker 1: so much better. It doesn't mean that, you know, a
- 23:30Speaker 1: long wheelbase TJ isn't awesome.
- 23:32Speaker 2: BECA is.
- 23:32Speaker 1: It is awesome. It's just the new ones are really good.
- 23:35Speaker 2: I was talking to as soon as we father in
- 23:36Speaker 2: law Ron, and he compared the interior to his two
- 23:40Speaker 2: thousand and seven JK. Yeah, you know it was about
- 23:44Speaker 2: kind of that quality, sure of finish, but to his point,
- 23:49Speaker 2: he paid. He said it was a Sahara and he
- 23:52Speaker 2: paid twenty two thousand dollars for it at the time. Right,
- 23:55Speaker 2: So it's like you kind of hook line and sinker
- 23:57Speaker 2: people on the internet and you're like, oh my god,
- 23:59Speaker 2: I have to have it, and they're.
- 24:00Speaker 1: By it, and I wonder, I wonder if if it
- 24:02Speaker 1: really even matters. They aren't they sold out for Yeah,
- 24:05Speaker 1: they're they're sold about two years of the vehicle. It
- 24:07Speaker 1: seems why not make you know, they just I guess
- 24:10Speaker 1: that that's where I go back to the accounting decision.
- 24:12Speaker 1: You know, it's not something that I think the designers did.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And I've I've chatted with other designers, you know, at
- 24:18Speaker 1: car week, uh and just friends of mine daring this.
- 24:21Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, it looks great, but not the finest
- 24:23Speaker 1: hour of execution was kind of the thing.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think I think one of the
- 24:27Speaker 2: interesting things is is the hype of this vehicle on
- 24:30Speaker 2: the Internet. Yeah, no one has had a measured response
- 24:35Speaker 2: to it, like if you were on that the Insta
- 24:38Speaker 2: sphere of things, everyone was all about it. And I
- 24:42Speaker 2: have a theory. Okay, I have a theory. You know.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I chat with a lot of people I know, and
- 24:48Speaker 2: I'm not kidding. At least ten people that were told,
- 24:51Speaker 2: like people with a voice, that they were in contention
- 24:54Speaker 2: for running in the running to get a Bronco. Of
- 24:58Speaker 2: course they're going to say great things, you know that
- 25:00Speaker 2: they dangled the carrot in front of all these guys.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Of those people, I don't know. I guess I know
- 25:05Speaker 2: one that did, but he always was going to because
- 25:07Speaker 2: he was kind of media and had a legit audience.
- 25:10Speaker 2: But like almost everybody I knew, that was like relatively
- 25:13Speaker 2: popular in a jeep or a Tacoma or whatever. And
- 25:16Speaker 2: all these people were posting about it left and right.
- 25:19Speaker 2: They didn't shut up about the thing. It's the greatest,
- 25:21Speaker 2: it's this. Oh my god, it's so much better than
- 25:23Speaker 2: a wrangler. It's so much of this. And then you
- 25:25Speaker 2: ask them have you seen one? Have you driven one?
- 25:28Speaker 2: Like have you seen Have you had access to anything
- 25:31Speaker 2: that Ford hasn't produced, you know, not trying to toot
- 25:35Speaker 2: the editorial horn, but that's the difference between an influencers
- 25:39Speaker 2: who gets paid for their audience, right, and editorial who
- 25:43Speaker 2: gets paid for their ethics. And now that you're starting
- 25:46Speaker 2: to see journalists get these vehicles, I think, you know,
- 25:50Speaker 2: for me, you're starting to see consistent responses. I said,
- 25:53Speaker 2: great truck, Maybe not as good as some people have
- 25:56Speaker 2: been saying. Sure. That's kind of an interesting tactic. Is
- 26:00Speaker 2: that's a great way to uh yeah, they hedged.
- 26:02Speaker 1: They hedged during the time that it mattered most by
- 26:06Speaker 1: getting the influencers all thinking about thinking about the possible I.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Could get this Yeah, oh my god, Yeah right, I
- 26:12Speaker 2: could get out of my Tacoma. People will do anything
- 26:15Speaker 2: to do that.
- 26:16Speaker 1: So that's and that's why we love having this podcast
- 26:20Speaker 1: because we can say whatever we want. Yeah, because thanks
- 26:23Speaker 1: to you listeners. That's how we get paid is because
- 26:26Speaker 1: of our readers and listeners, not because of yeah yeah exactly,
- 26:30Speaker 1: some some OEM that's paying us to say something exactly.
- 26:33Speaker 2: So let's let's talk about some of the great things.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Love that there's a manual transmission, Love that there's a
- 26:38Speaker 2: seven speed manual transmission. Love that it's a get track.
- 26:41Speaker 2: They make fantastic boxes. Coolest thing is that crawler gear
- 26:44Speaker 2: that's five eight. Yeah, that's insane, you know. So it's
- 26:48Speaker 2: so it's a seventh speed, but it's really a six speed.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's a six speed with like your with like your
- 26:54Speaker 1: Granddad's Ranny Low. It's got like a granny Low first
- 26:58Speaker 1: gear in a six speed manual trans mission. Yes, I
- 27:01Speaker 1: hope that people buy them so that they don't stop
- 27:04Speaker 1: putting them in the vehicle, because like if I was
- 27:06Speaker 1: to get a Bronco, I would definitely want the manual.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oh yeah, hell no, I'd runt the ten speed, I know,
- 27:12Speaker 1: but I would want the manuals because it just likes
- 27:15Speaker 1: to go fast, I know.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's just that it's just again that charm
- 27:20Speaker 2: of fifty percent of nine to eleven buyers have opted
- 27:23Speaker 2: for a manual transmission, and I think that that's cool.
- 27:26Speaker 2: It's the highest tike rate of a manual transmission in
- 27:29Speaker 2: a modern vehicle enthusiast vehicle that's really siglizing in England,
- 27:33Speaker 2: like the Boxel Astro or something probably is still manual,
- 27:36Speaker 2: but that's really that's actually very interesting. I didn't know
- 27:38Speaker 2: that actually specifically, that's GT three okay, But I wonder
- 27:42Speaker 2: what the second highest vehicle would be in that same idea.
- 27:45Speaker 2: We should do a podcast just on you know what
- 27:47Speaker 2: if I was to make a guess, Toyota GT eighty six, okay,
- 27:50Speaker 2: could be that would be it. It could be it'd
- 27:53Speaker 2: be the right buyer and everything. Yeah, or well, actually
- 27:56Speaker 2: I guess it would be Stix. It's not available right auto.
- 27:59Speaker 2: The Advanced four by four package gets you a three
- 28:02Speaker 2: point zero six low range. When you have a seven
- 28:06Speaker 2: speed with that crawl gear, that's a nine point seventy
- 28:09Speaker 2: five to one crawl ratio. That is, until Jeep released
- 28:14Speaker 2: to this Extreme Reconn package that was class leading. Yep, yeah,
- 28:19Speaker 2: ninety five to one. Can you ever argue that it
- 28:21Speaker 2: was class leading because you can now buy an extreme
- 28:23Speaker 2: Recon package and you can't actually get a Bronco. I
- 28:26Speaker 2: don't know how you'd say that, right, you know what
- 28:28Speaker 2: I'm trying to say? Yeah, totally. It's funny they were
- 28:31Speaker 2: able to respond faster than get this in a production.
- 28:33Speaker 2: It's got a Dana forty four at Vantech M two
- 28:36Speaker 2: twenty rear axle or axle geeks. That's the same thing
- 28:39Speaker 2: that's in a gladiator or a JL which is cool.
- 28:43Speaker 1: One thing that's important to talk about on those axles
- 28:45Speaker 1: is the differential locks. So there's a couple things about
- 28:48Speaker 1: this vehicle that I found in the trail that were
- 28:51Speaker 1: really interesting. So the swaybar disconnect. I don't know what
- 28:54Speaker 1: the technology is, but it's I think it's electro mechanical chick. Yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's at very dust. It's like some kind of a
- 29:02Speaker 1: magnet electromagnetic swavebar disconnect. So it's not geared like alec economism.
- 29:08Speaker 1: So you can be under full like compression tension so
- 29:12Speaker 1: that it can be crossed up under full load and
- 29:15Speaker 1: you push the swavebar disconnect and then immediately relaxes the
- 29:18Speaker 1: suspension and they also and then you.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Can one option where it like push it forces articulation.
- 29:23Speaker 1: It sure feels like it does that, so it maybe
- 29:25Speaker 1: maybe it's maybe it's hydraulic like a KDSS on Toyota.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I don't know what the technology is. It's magic exactly,
- 29:33Speaker 1: it is. It does feel like magic because you can
- 29:35Speaker 1: be on the trail and just realize like, oh, I'm
- 29:37Speaker 1: I'm in a position where I need to have the
- 29:41Speaker 1: swavebar disconnected and you can push it at any point
- 29:43Speaker 1: and it doesn't need to get unbound in order to release,
- 29:46Speaker 1: and then you can push it again and the next
- 29:48Speaker 1: time that the vehicle's level, it is back to connected.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And it probably is something where it is counterforcing it,
- 29:55Speaker 1: because I found that head toss in this vehicle is
- 29:59Speaker 1: half of what it is in a Wrangler. Yeah, so
- 30:01Speaker 1: it's probably some kind of control or hydraulic control that allows.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I have like this permanent bruise about right here on
- 30:08Speaker 2: a Wrangler because I'm kind of like to us that
- 30:10Speaker 2: I hit the WAM soundbar time.
- 30:14Speaker 1: No, I mean a Wrangler has again more articulation, no question,
- 30:19Speaker 1: but the Bronco's got a six twenty ramp travel index
- 30:23Speaker 1: and much less head toss. So I do like that
- 30:26Speaker 1: the lockers will also engage and disengage at any point,
- 30:29Speaker 1: so they don't need if you're under dry of an
- 30:33Speaker 1: air locker, but in a arguably more reliable electronic format. Yeah,
- 30:38Speaker 1: exactly that I really liked, just for like, giggle mode
- 30:41Speaker 1: is the donut feature.
- 30:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know what. You've had a lot better
- 30:45Speaker 2: experience with it than I did. Okay, but that's right,
- 30:47Speaker 2: because you try to do it on like DG. Yeah,
- 30:50Speaker 2: decompose granted for people that aren't from Arizona, it's like
- 30:53Speaker 2: crappy sand, right, It's like very granular sand. It's like
- 30:57Speaker 2: sand that like you walk on. You're like, oh, so
- 31:01Speaker 2: it kind of worked. It was a fifty percent reduction
- 31:04Speaker 2: in turning radius from you know, because I kind of
- 31:06Speaker 2: sat there like constant throttle, constant, you know, full lock,
- 31:10Speaker 2: did it without, did it with, and since it had
- 31:13Speaker 2: recently rained, I could actually kind of see sure how
- 31:17Speaker 2: it was working. It's really cool. It works better than
- 31:20Speaker 2: the two hundred series, yes, and I think that's because
- 31:23Speaker 2: of tires. I think that the technology is probably similar,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but the tires are so much better on the Bronco.
- 31:28Speaker 2: But I had it down in a sand wash and
- 31:30Speaker 2: it would rotate the vehicle around. That's awesome, within the
- 31:34Speaker 2: length of the wheelbase.
- 31:35Speaker 1: So the kind of cone of sand that it would
- 31:37Speaker 1: create was maybe two feet in diameter, so that rear
- 31:41Speaker 1: tire would swing around in a two foot So if
- 31:43Speaker 1: you're incapable of doing a three point turn, yes, this
- 31:46Speaker 1: is a wonderful feature for you. It's the new hill
- 31:48Speaker 1: descent control from me. I know, I'm a curmudgeon.
- 31:51Speaker 2: I know. So it's so funny.
- 31:53Speaker 1: It's so funny because there probably are practical applications for
- 31:57Speaker 1: the use of this doughnut thing, but I found myself
- 32:01Speaker 1: doing about eight thousand of them in this wash and
- 32:03Speaker 1: giggling the entire time. I think the production crew is
- 32:07Speaker 1: thoroughly exhausted with and tired of being swung around in circles.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But we're going to Paula. Were you tired of Scott? Never?
- 32:15Speaker 1: She says never. Yeah, she's being too kind. It's a
- 32:18Speaker 1: nice thing about having nice people that work with you.
- 32:21Speaker 1: There's eight thousand different packages, so I'm just gonna try
- 32:26Speaker 1: and get this right here.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Lots of specifications. So there's the Bass Big Bend, Black Diamond,
- 32:35Speaker 2: bad Lands in seven Speed, a Base Big Bend, Outer Banks,
- 32:39Speaker 2: Black Dime, and bad Lands Wild Track first Edition sas
- 32:42Speaker 2: Squatch Package Equipped Base Big Bend. There's a lot of
- 32:45Speaker 2: different things, and I mean, you know, give give the
- 32:48Speaker 2: people what they want, which is nice. And then there's
- 32:51Speaker 2: packages I believe within the packages.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yes, like we had a bad Lands Sasquatch and I
- 32:57Speaker 1: don't know what the difference came those two.
- 32:59Speaker 2: I know it was a Sasquatch. It looks like that.
- 33:02Speaker 2: It had like that cool like that color that came
- 33:04Speaker 2: out on like the tenth anniversary of Rubicon. Area fifty
- 33:07Speaker 2: one is where Area fifty one. Yeah, super cool color,
- 33:11Speaker 2: great color.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I like the They're probably totally non functional other than
- 33:16Speaker 1: if you wanted limb risers, which are usually non functional.
- 33:19Speaker 1: But they had these brackets on the leading edge of
- 33:22Speaker 1: the hood that I loved. From a practical perspective, those
- 33:25Speaker 1: brackets line up perfectly with the center of the tire,
- 33:27Speaker 1: So if you're looking, if you're wondering where your tire's
- 33:30Speaker 1: going to end up, you can look and see those
- 33:33Speaker 1: limb riser brackets or whatever. You People are going to
- 33:35Speaker 1: probably use them to hang high lifts on the front
- 33:37Speaker 1: of their vehicle, which is going to be ridiculous, but
- 33:39Speaker 1: high lists that they don't know how to use, we'll
- 33:41Speaker 1: ever used well, or you have to remove it every
- 33:43Speaker 1: time to get your into your hood right, or it's
- 33:46Speaker 1: like when you see them mounted to the front of jeeps,
- 33:49Speaker 1: it's like then people they can't lift their hood up
- 33:51Speaker 1: because it's too heavy, and like I have a high lift.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I will never argue against the totally useful, so many
- 33:57Speaker 1: different options. The one thing that's really interesting and I
- 34:00Speaker 1: and I don't know if it's that people are it's
- 34:02Speaker 1: kind of the start of the go fast options is
- 34:05Speaker 1: this wild track and that is that is three inches
- 34:09Speaker 1: wider than the bad Lands and four inches wider than
- 34:12Speaker 1: the base vehicle.
- 34:13Speaker 2: So are sure we didn't have that one? Maybe because
- 34:15Speaker 2: it already had like the big If I was to
- 34:18Speaker 2: make any critique on the styling, I understand functionally why
- 34:22Speaker 2: they did it, but the fenders do look tacked on
- 34:24Speaker 2: like to me, this particular Bronco was trying to echo
- 34:28Speaker 2: the first generation Bronco, which was in its original form
- 34:32Speaker 2: relatively dainty, you know, like an uncut Bronco is to
- 34:37Speaker 2: me perfection for that vehicle. And what I mean by
- 34:40Speaker 2: that is they had this they had for visitors that
- 34:43Speaker 2: are viewers, listeners, the people that are actually paying attention
- 34:47Speaker 2: at this point thirty nine minutes and forty eight seconds in,
- 34:50Speaker 2: you know, they had that kind of the tire was
- 34:52Speaker 2: a little bit covered on the rear. It was difference
- 34:55Speaker 2: to me between a Bronco and a Wrangler was always
- 34:57Speaker 2: that one was a full body vehicle and one was
- 35:00Speaker 2: a narrow body vehicle with fenders. We've kind of ended
- 35:03Speaker 2: up with something maybe in the middle. And I think
- 35:06Speaker 2: since they are using the body from that first generation
- 35:10Speaker 2: Bronco clearly as the inspiration because of the Bronco grill
- 35:13Speaker 2: and the headlights and whatever they look tacked on me,
- 35:16Speaker 2: I get why they did it. Otherwise you'd end up
- 35:18Speaker 2: with something like like real wide and this is going
- 35:21Speaker 2: to be a better off road. That would maybe be
- 35:23Speaker 2: my only exterior styling complaint. Yeah, they are.
- 35:27Speaker 1: They're very obvious, the fender flares, and it would be
- 35:31Speaker 1: be nice to see something that was a little bit
- 35:33Speaker 1: better integrated, a little bit more.
- 35:34Speaker 2: Bond match because because to me, whenever I saw a
- 35:38Speaker 2: first gen Bronco that had fender flares on it, I
- 35:41Speaker 2: was like, ah, you ruined it. Yeah, you know, it
- 35:44Speaker 2: was just like they put like bushwhacker fender flares on it,
- 35:47Speaker 2: and I'm like, just like you kind of it was
- 35:49Speaker 2: like a defining design characteristic of that vehicle, and you've
- 35:54Speaker 2: ruined it, ruined, ruined, ruined. It's a great car. There's
- 35:59Speaker 2: some things that I would have done differently, but like
- 36:01Speaker 2: I'm also I'm weird as hell. You know.
- 36:03Speaker 1: What I did like is the position of all the
- 36:06Speaker 1: switches right on the top of the dash immediate boom
- 36:08Speaker 1: boom boom immediate and the little the little upfitter switches yep,
- 36:12Speaker 1: right on top. You know what I kept doing is
- 36:13Speaker 1: I kept going like.
- 36:16Speaker 2: You could like kind of like like I imagine, like
- 36:18Speaker 2: I feel like you're in top gun and you're like
- 36:20Speaker 2: I imagine like Instagrammers are gonna have like eighty seven thousand
- 36:23Speaker 2: led lights and somebody's gonna go and then like you know,
- 36:27Speaker 2: they're gonna blind this elderly lady that's maybe doing like
- 36:29Speaker 2: three mile an hour two slow for their taste, and
- 36:32Speaker 2: then they can go and they can turn them all.
- 36:34Speaker 2: I mean, I have buttons that I actually have to
- 36:36Speaker 2: press in my in my gladiator, and that just sucks.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Now you can't if you get into one of these things,
- 36:42Speaker 2: or you've driven a Ford, you know what I'm talking about.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Us you can like it's very satisfying. It's like all
- 36:47Speaker 2: these successive buttons that you just go. And I love
- 36:52Speaker 2: the fact we've sent a minute. I know we did.
- 36:55Speaker 1: And I love the fact that locker immediately, you know, obvious,
- 37:00Speaker 1: swavebar disconnect immediately obvious. You go into some of these
- 37:03Speaker 1: goat modes with a rotary dial, and it puts the
- 37:06Speaker 1: vehicle in all the right configurations, which I think is
- 37:09Speaker 1: great for new drivers. So if you go into rocks,
- 37:13Speaker 1: it reminds you to go into neutral so that it
- 37:15Speaker 1: can shift into low range. It disconnects the sway bar.
- 37:18Speaker 1: It locks the rue differential automatically. So these are really
- 37:21Speaker 1: thoughtful features. I like the fact that you can lock
- 37:24Speaker 1: the rude diff in tool drive.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Very fun. Yep, somebody actually was thinking there. Listen to
- 37:30Speaker 2: feedback on that.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want your own version or the Scotty
- 37:34Speaker 1: version of Baja mode, it is too high vehicle stability
- 37:38Speaker 1: control off which requires a long hold lock the rear dift.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Very fun. You know, I didn't go that deep. I
- 37:45Speaker 2: just bombed it down some dirt roads. It's fantastic. See.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I really like the four four A the all wheel
- 37:51Speaker 2: drive mode. I think that that's so that is something
- 37:53Speaker 2: that Jeep is starting to bring into certain models. You
- 37:56Speaker 2: can get that in the Mahave, you can get that
- 37:58Speaker 2: in the Sahara. For whatever reason, you can can't get
- 38:00Speaker 2: that on the Rubicon. As somebody that grew up in
- 38:03Speaker 2: Chicago with snow and stuff, four wheel drive is not
- 38:05Speaker 2: always great. Two wheel drives always bad. So you're kind
- 38:09Speaker 2: of like, I want to like hop through the one
- 38:11Speaker 2: dry intersection where that all wheel drive, especially modern oheel
- 38:15Speaker 2: drive with all of those sensors, that's that's fantastic. It's
- 38:20Speaker 2: it's hard for me from an empirical perspective to not
- 38:23Speaker 2: call this vehicle class leading in a lot of ways.
- 38:26Speaker 2: I think I think that I'm still probably a Wrangler guy.
- 38:30Speaker 2: Not probably, I'm still a Wrangler guy. I think the
- 38:32Speaker 2: interiors are nicer. I think they've got a little bit
- 38:35Speaker 2: more character to him. But I think this is going
- 38:37Speaker 2: to be a better performer or how most people are
- 38:40Speaker 2: going to use the vehicle. Well, let's do that.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Let's let's compare, because I don't I don't have much
- 38:45Speaker 1: else on my list here other than the fact that
- 38:49Speaker 1: the payload is it's just something that we do harp
- 38:52Speaker 1: on in this show. But you have one thousand pounds, But.
- 38:56Speaker 2: That's a thousand pounds with rock sliders with thirty five
- 38:59Speaker 2: inch tires with a front bumper to the rear bumper.
- 39:01Speaker 2: That's always been my argument for Gladiator and Wrangular Rubicon
- 39:06Speaker 2: when you see those.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Figures, so you probably do have enough for Winch recovery
- 39:10Speaker 1: gear tools, eighty seven light bars.
- 39:13Speaker 2: They've got these like cool mounts on it, like on
- 39:15Speaker 2: the like the the a pillar mounts, which is probably
- 39:18Speaker 2: one of the worst places you could mount lights. You know,
- 39:21Speaker 2: you can you can do that, and you can you
- 39:23Speaker 2: can put them on the roof so you can blind yourself.
- 39:26Speaker 1: And it doesn't actually need much for lights because rate
- 39:29Speaker 1: lights and side mirrors. It has rock lights built into it,
- 39:33Speaker 1: and there's a couple switches right on the desk.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Somebody put a lot of thought in totally. Yeah, it's
- 39:38Speaker 2: just you know, maybe that's why the accountants had to
- 39:40Speaker 2: get involved. Oh you want to have that little led
- 39:42Speaker 2: light mount, Okay, I'm going to trade you for the
- 39:44Speaker 2: Fiesta Center console. Yeah, that's probably. I also thought that
- 39:48Speaker 2: the orientation of the buttons was backwards. That's because you're
- 39:52Speaker 2: a landover guy. That's the place on the on the
- 39:55Speaker 2: on the you know, I'm talking about that. I do,
- 39:57Speaker 2: I do.
- 39:57Speaker 1: I kept I kept rolling down the rear windows. I
- 40:00Speaker 1: do because Discovery twos and drect that you drove is
- 40:04Speaker 1: opposite from is from the is opposite from the bronco.
- 40:08Speaker 1: So this is the long term effects of the land
- 40:10Speaker 1: River it is, whereas the buttons are the same on
- 40:13Speaker 1: a D one. I have no idea why land Rovers
- 40:16Speaker 1: switched them from Discovery one to Discovery too swap. Yeah,
- 40:19Speaker 1: they did switch them. So the Bronco is the same
- 40:22Speaker 1: as the D one. So it felt very normal to me,
- 40:24Speaker 1: but it felt totally wrong to you because you drove
- 40:26Speaker 1: a D two for so long. Yeah, so that's the problem.
- 40:29Speaker 1: But I actually like the fact that they're right there
- 40:30Speaker 1: when I drove a land River and now it burns
- 40:32Speaker 1: when I p now it doesn't. No, it's six with you,
- 40:36Speaker 1: six with you.
- 40:37Speaker 2: There's certain things that like, this is the land River
- 40:39Speaker 2: Way and it's really great, lovely folks.
- 40:42Speaker 1: So let's compare against the Wrangler. I think that that's worthwhile.
- 40:44Speaker 1: I want to compare against the fore Runner. Oh interesting,
- 40:47Speaker 1: because I think there's an argument. I think there's an
- 40:51Speaker 1: argument for both Bronco and Wrangler, and we should get
- 40:55Speaker 1: into that. But what I can't find an argument for
- 40:57Speaker 1: right now is why I would recommend to buy a
- 41:01Speaker 1: Forerunner over this, Well, the for Erunner, in my mind,
- 41:04Speaker 1: it's a lot more quiet, it's a lot more comfortable
- 41:07Speaker 1: and drivable in my mind.
- 41:09Speaker 2: So I would like to. I'd like to revisit the
- 41:13Speaker 2: Bronco when they when they fix the top. There's no
- 41:17Speaker 2: reason that they can't fix it, you know, I mean frankly,
- 41:21Speaker 2: like the reason I didn't drive it off road as
- 41:23Speaker 2: much as you did is I was getting a headache, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 2: driving it like you've got the hearing loss.
- 41:28Speaker 1: I hearing loss from the air force. So I didn't
- 41:29Speaker 1: hear anything. I mean, Tina, our editor Theready, heard it
- 41:33Speaker 1: thirty five miles an hour. You heard it at forty
- 41:35Speaker 1: five miles at sixty five. For me, it was unbearable.
- 41:39Speaker 2: But then like also, like you know, there's there's the
- 41:41Speaker 2: people that have that iPhone ring Ton that's like, yeah,
- 41:45Speaker 2: I hear it for like two hours, you know, I think.
- 41:49Speaker 1: And what paul Are, our producer, is here and Paula,
- 41:52Speaker 1: didn't you hear that as well? The whistling from the
- 41:54Speaker 1: top or did you not hear that? But they're fixing it.
- 41:56Speaker 2: They've admitted a problem, so I'm not going to harp
- 41:58Speaker 2: on them terribly. But worst drive line, I mean, the
- 42:02Speaker 2: fore Runner is always going to be quieter. It's way quieter.
- 42:05Speaker 2: It's steel roof car.
- 42:06Speaker 1: You're talking about an international Proto one fifty chassis, so
- 42:11Speaker 1: it's very durable, it's designed for the developing world. Still
- 42:14Speaker 1: it just happens to be available in the United States.
- 42:17Speaker 1: It has the highest resale value, so if you're making
- 42:20Speaker 1: a financial decision, the fore Runner is still super appropriate
- 42:24Speaker 1: for that. Lots of aftermarket support, a very upright driving position,
- 42:29Speaker 1: the fact that you can get a locking rear differential,
- 42:31Speaker 1: a track front.
- 42:33Speaker 2: It's perfect for people who love to pay more for less.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I don't know that I agree with that, and it's
- 42:38Speaker 1: not because like conceptually you're wrong.
- 42:40Speaker 2: It's just that, like why do toyotas maintain their value
- 42:44Speaker 2: so freakishly well, Like I mean, I had a Forerunner.
- 42:47Speaker 2: It's nothing wrong with it, Like I had it in
- 42:49Speaker 2: twenty fifteen. It was like and it's the same car
- 42:52Speaker 2: as today. It's kind of like, eh, back then and
- 42:55Speaker 2: now you have you know, Like I'll hear the argument
- 42:58Speaker 2: of the proto one fifty chassis, international serviceability and YadA, YadA,
- 43:02Speaker 2: ya YadA. But like, like the pictures I've seen of
- 43:05Speaker 2: this thing doing doing stuff like in prototype testing of
- 43:08Speaker 2: friends that have sent me and I had them on
- 43:11Speaker 2: the trail with very very accomplished Baja racers beating the
- 43:14Speaker 2: crap out of them. I don't know if the durability argument,
- 43:17Speaker 2: I'll hear it on the engine because like this two
- 43:19Speaker 2: point seven liter engine, you know Ford for example, on
- 43:23Speaker 2: their six seven diesel, the low or the cold side
- 43:28Speaker 2: intercooler pipe that goes from the intercooler to the I
- 43:32Speaker 2: think to the take correct made of plastic. Yeah, because
- 43:37Speaker 2: they get well, because it's natural in anything, you're going
- 43:40Speaker 2: to get some kind of oil residue that's transferring with
- 43:42Speaker 2: the oil. The oil breaks down, the plastic heat cycles
- 43:45Speaker 2: and it goes boom. Like this thing has a lot
- 43:47Speaker 2: going on. It's got you know where that was a
- 43:50Speaker 2: lot of twelve inch pipe or eighteen inches. This is
- 43:53Speaker 2: like several feet and then there's two of them, and
- 43:55Speaker 2: there's there's lots of plastic, lots of plastic that the
- 43:59Speaker 2: Bronco lots of plastic. But it kind of makes the
- 44:02Speaker 2: drive line of the Wrangler look a little Mini Vanni. Yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 2: except for the great transmission they chose. I think the
- 44:08Speaker 2: Wrangler just does its job. Yeah, that's the thing about
- 44:11Speaker 2: a Wrangler, right, and they've been doing it longer. It
- 44:13Speaker 2: delivers exactly on what they promised, and they keep refining
- 44:16Speaker 2: the car, and it feels a lot more refined. The
- 44:19Speaker 2: Bronco is like justin Bieber's first hit. You're like, oh,
- 44:22Speaker 2: that's catchy. But there's a lot more potential. Yeah, even
- 44:25Speaker 2: if it's not your thing. Yeah, true, Yeah, true.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I think compared to the fore Runner, it just the
- 44:30Speaker 1: fore Runner has more payload, has five hundred pounds more payload,
- 44:33Speaker 1: which can be a game changer, or white bars. It
- 44:36Speaker 1: has more towing capacity five pounds as opposed to thirty
- 44:39Speaker 1: five hundred pounds toying capacity. So there are I think
- 44:41Speaker 1: there are going to be reasons to find the fore Erunner.
- 44:43Speaker 1: The fore Runner currently is a better financial choice. We
- 44:46Speaker 1: don't know how resale is going to work out on
- 44:48Speaker 1: the Bronco. Probably very well, probably.
- 44:51Speaker 2: In the right things. But it's an American car, you know.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I will answer my own question as to why Toyotas
- 44:56Speaker 2: hold their resale values so well. A for example, forty
- 44:59Speaker 2: five thousand dollars Toyota is forty thousand dollars of the
- 45:02Speaker 2: Toyota dealer. Yep. Maybe if you've bought some cars from them,
- 45:05Speaker 2: they'll give you five hundred bucks off a forty thousand
- 45:07Speaker 2: dollars forward. If you buy it on Memorial Day is
- 45:11Speaker 2: thirty two thousand and seven to fifty. Yeah, you know,
- 45:13Speaker 2: if you buy it at you get the point. They
- 45:16Speaker 2: deal on these things. The business model is much different.
- 45:20Speaker 2: It is.
- 45:21Speaker 1: In fact, this is a great example of that. When
- 45:23Speaker 1: we go to buy a project vehicle for Overland International
- 45:26Speaker 1: for Overland Journal, we always ask the OEM if they
- 45:30Speaker 1: have employee pricing. We're not looking for industry courtesy. That's right,
- 45:34Speaker 1: a courtesy price. And with Toyota and they were very apologetic,
- 45:38Speaker 1: They're like, this is our employee pricing. It was five
- 45:41Speaker 1: hundred dollars off. There are domestic manufacturers. We have gotten
- 45:44Speaker 1: thousands and thousands and many many mini thousands off the vehicle,
- 45:48Speaker 1: and that's the same as any other employee. For that OEM,
- 45:53Speaker 1: there's a lot more margin from the dealer, whereas on
- 45:56Speaker 1: the Toyota there's just not a lot. So it's a
- 45:58Speaker 1: very high quality vehicle. It has a reputation that has
- 46:02Speaker 1: let last lasted the test of time. I think people
- 46:05Speaker 1: gain a lot of confidence. I think that if you
- 46:07Speaker 1: look at the complexity of the Bronco and all that
- 46:09Speaker 1: plastic under the hood, and you go off and you
- 46:12Speaker 1: were going to go into the middle of nowhere with
- 46:13Speaker 1: your two kids and you're driving a Forerunner, you're going
- 46:16Speaker 1: down to Baja You just don't even think about it.
- 46:18Speaker 1: You just And that's one of the things that I
- 46:21Speaker 1: so appreciated about Toyota driving them around the world is
- 46:25Speaker 1: even when I was in the middle of nowhere in
- 46:27Speaker 1: Antarctica and I was days from help, I was literally
- 46:31Speaker 1: at what they call these points of inaccessibility. You cannot
- 46:34Speaker 1: get help. They can maybe drop some things out of
- 46:36Speaker 1: an airplane to you. That I was so glad I
- 46:39Speaker 1: was driving a high lux And I think that that
- 46:41Speaker 1: is what at the end of the day, when we
- 46:43Speaker 1: talk about our audience why they buy Toyota's is because
- 46:46Speaker 1: of the confidence that the vehicle gives you. And that's
- 46:49Speaker 1: worth a lot of money. And maybe it's worth a
- 46:51Speaker 1: lot of compromises. I mean, we we may get we
- 46:54Speaker 1: may dig on the Tacoma a little bit for justifiable reasons.
- 46:57Speaker 1: But I think that people at the end of the day,
- 47:00Speaker 1: we want it to be better, right, but people, at
- 47:02Speaker 1: the end of the day, they're willing to compromise a
- 47:04Speaker 1: lot to feel safe. Yeah, and we do that in
- 47:06Speaker 1: all kinds of areas of our life, and I think
- 47:09Speaker 1: that if you want a vehicle that's going to be
- 47:11Speaker 1: better performing by a Bronco over a Forerunner, it performs
- 47:14Speaker 1: much better. Yeah, and it looks. I mean, I like,
- 47:17Speaker 1: I actually really like the way that a Forerunner looks.
- 47:19Speaker 1: But I would say that the Bronco is much more
- 47:22Speaker 1: very squinty and angry though.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they can't as long as they don't take the
- 47:26Speaker 2: Lexus the Lexus design.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's design language. It's just like, but they're doing that.
- 47:31Speaker 1: They're doing that. By the time this comes out, the
- 47:34Speaker 1: new Tundra will be out for people to look at.
- 47:36Speaker 1: It's very angry grill. They're doing that in the toyotas
- 47:39Speaker 1: as well. So then now let's compare it against the Wrangler. Yeah,
- 47:42Speaker 1: So I would say because I did drive the Bronco
- 47:45Speaker 1: in very technical train limits of capability terrain, so I
- 47:50Speaker 1: think rock crawling, waterfalls, huge holes where we were hitting
- 47:54Speaker 1: rock sliders, hitting bumpers at the limits of the available
- 47:59Speaker 1: ground clearing and traction. The tires are just so surprisingly good,
- 48:04Speaker 1: So I think that that's a real advantage.
- 48:06Speaker 2: It's good years. I mean, you have them on your
- 48:08Speaker 2: t Rex, right, Yeah, I've hit pointy eight lateral g's
- 48:11Speaker 2: with them like by Boogie. Yeah, they do.
- 48:13Speaker 1: They're great at high speed, and they're actually really good
- 48:15Speaker 1: in the rocks. Where they'll struggle a little bit is
- 48:18Speaker 1: going to be in the mud. They're excellent tires. The
- 48:21Speaker 1: fact that the swaybar disconnect works the way that it
- 48:23Speaker 1: does and it manages the head toss, I think is
- 48:26Speaker 1: an advantage over the wrangler. But the wrangler has more
- 48:28Speaker 1: overall articulation out of the box. If you were to
- 48:31Speaker 1: try to put a recon wrangler against a Bronco, there's
- 48:36Speaker 1: going to be the advantage going to the Bronco at
- 48:38Speaker 1: speed obviously, and then there's going to be a very
- 48:41Speaker 1: small advantage to the wrangler at low speed, and that's
- 48:45Speaker 1: because of a little bit more articulation. The body's tucked
- 48:48Speaker 1: in a little bit further and the wheels are a
- 48:49Speaker 1: little further out, you know, the approach departure angle.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm not trying to pontificate here, but I
- 48:55Speaker 2: don't think most people will or have the skill to
- 48:58Speaker 2: take advantage of the additional capability that a wrangler offers,
- 49:01Speaker 2: where with the Bronco you can realize more advantages in
- 49:06Speaker 2: day to day use.
- 49:07Speaker 1: No question, and it's easier to drive on the trail.
- 49:09Speaker 1: It's actually more effective at performing well on the trail.
- 49:14Speaker 1: The switch position is really good, the modes are very intuitive,
- 49:19Speaker 1: the vehicle is very confidence inspiring. On our test track,
- 49:22Speaker 1: we have about a twenty six degree side slope that
- 49:25Speaker 1: we can put vehicles on. When you're in a Wrangler
- 49:27Speaker 1: with the swaybar disconnected, it feels frightening like, it feels
- 49:31Speaker 1: very unstable, whereas with this Bronco, I was giggling because
- 49:35Speaker 1: it was so effortless. Our test track is designed to
- 49:39Speaker 1: push the limits of stock vehicles. There has only been
- 49:42Speaker 1: one vehicle that it was effortless before this, and that
- 49:45Speaker 1: was the Wrangler, and the Bronco was just as effortless
- 49:48Speaker 1: in that terrain, so we had to go find other
- 49:50Speaker 1: obstacles to test it against. I think at the end
- 49:53Speaker 1: of the day, the Wrangler is actually a more refined product, and.
- 49:57Speaker 2: It's the Filson bag to the ARII bag, you know,
- 50:01Speaker 2: the Bronco or the Arctics bag. I think it's got
- 50:04Speaker 2: more zippers, and it's got this, and it's got this
- 50:06Speaker 2: and this technical material and whatever.
- 50:08Speaker 1: But I want to fill some back. Yeah, the Wrangler.
- 50:10Speaker 1: The Wrangler is no less of a product against the Bronco.
- 50:13Speaker 1: It's really important to disclose that because especially if you're wanting,
- 50:16Speaker 1: if you're wanting to get to ultimate capability, you can
- 50:19Speaker 1: modify our Wrangler much more than you can modify the Bronco.
- 50:22Speaker 1: If you like driving faster on dirt roads and you go,
- 50:25Speaker 1: or you love Baja Bronco, take the Bronco and and
- 50:29Speaker 1: if you're looking for something that's like retro styled, the
- 50:32Speaker 1: Bronco is also great in that regard as well. And
- 50:35Speaker 1: the motors, the motor's really really nice, which is not
- 50:38Speaker 1: to take something against, you know, off against the new Wrangler,
- 50:41Speaker 1: the new I don't think that the three six is.
- 50:43Speaker 2: A spectacular motor at all. I think that it's I
- 50:47Speaker 2: think it's totally adequate. And that's about it. Like it's
- 50:49Speaker 2: kind of.
- 50:50Speaker 1: What was their answer to that three nine to two,
- 50:52Speaker 1: So you can now get a V eight Wrangler. So
- 50:55Speaker 1: I think Jeep, I mean Jeep is going to protect
- 50:57Speaker 1: this market oh as much as they can, and they
- 51:00Speaker 1: are being very aggressive about well.
- 51:02Speaker 2: And then I think the interesting thing is that you know,
- 51:04Speaker 2: Bronco did really well with bringing external experts as consultants
- 51:09Speaker 2: in to advise them, you know, on their on this
- 51:13Speaker 2: new product. Ye Jeep has those in house.
- 51:15Speaker 1: They do, although I would say is a cautionary tale
- 51:18Speaker 1: is that is that I think Jeep has has started
- 51:21Speaker 1: to alienate those kinds of people by becoming a little
- 51:25Speaker 1: bit too closed off. And at the end of the day,
- 51:27Speaker 1: you need to have fresh ideas, and I think that Bronco,
- 51:30Speaker 1: the Bronco team has done a good job of what.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Bronco's writing the checks to everybody. Bronco's writing the checks
- 51:36Speaker 2: to the Trophy Truck, Monster Energy folks and and all
- 51:40Speaker 2: those guys, so you know they're they're gonna they're gonna
- 51:42Speaker 2: get that.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And if Jeep isn't careful, if you become too closed
- 51:46Speaker 1: off and you become too mopar focused in your aftermarket
- 51:50Speaker 1: and you don't support the aftermarket, I think Jeep needs
- 51:53Speaker 1: to be careful about making sure that they give access
- 51:56Speaker 1: to cad drawings early and that they bring in the
- 51:58Speaker 1: aftermarket to continue to make It's a really good point.
- 52:01Speaker 1: These forward folks aren't stupid, so they realize that because
- 52:04Speaker 1: Wrangler is becoming more insulary and they're so focused.
- 52:07Speaker 2: On mobile, it's a really good way to say that.
- 52:09Speaker 2: That's something I hadn't considered before.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I believe that Jeep runs the risk if they don't
- 52:15Speaker 1: keep themselves open to the aftermarket and communicate well with
- 52:18Speaker 1: people in the industry, that they're going to miss opportunities
- 52:21Speaker 1: that someone like Bard is going to be.
- 52:23Speaker 2: Happy to s Yeah. I mean, you know you can
- 52:25Speaker 2: see like you can get rigid lights on a on
- 52:27Speaker 2: a Bronco and then Jeep will sell you they're more
- 52:30Speaker 2: expensive whatever, weird things that don't even look good.
- 52:34Speaker 1: I have not seen good things come out of Mopar
- 52:37Speaker 1: for the most part. It's not that they make it's
- 52:39Speaker 1: not that they make terrible things. I think they're adequate items.
- 52:42Speaker 1: But we're seeing a very used car salesman like very much.
- 52:45Speaker 2: So you know, like, what's the act Moss magnuson or yeah,
- 52:51Speaker 2: it's the act that says the earnest is on the
- 52:53Speaker 2: manufacturer proved that this aftermarket accessory really did affect it, right,
- 52:57Speaker 2: you know. And I remember like at the launch of
- 52:59Speaker 2: the Jai that the Mopar guy was there like, oh, well,
- 53:02Speaker 2: these are only accessories that won't void your warrant. If
- 53:04Speaker 2: you put another lift k void your warrt, you I'm like, like, really,
- 53:07Speaker 2: you're you're saying that right now, Like you know, you're
- 53:09Speaker 2: you're you're being protectionist and you're being very Uh.
- 53:12Speaker 1: That's that sums it up. Mopar is being protectionist against
- 53:17Speaker 1: the aftermarket. That is a bad move. Yeah, there are
- 53:20Speaker 1: there are very bright people in the aftermarket that are
- 53:23Speaker 1: making very good components for Jeeps, and they're getting a
- 53:26Speaker 1: little bit exhausted by the obstacle obstacles that are being
- 53:30Speaker 1: placed in their way to making great parts. So Jeep
- 53:33Speaker 1: has always had an advantage and in the space because
- 53:37Speaker 1: they're aftermarket.
- 53:38Speaker 2: It's the number one vehicle for according to SEMA for
- 53:42Speaker 2: aftermarket spent Yep and you don't want that to change.
- 53:45Speaker 1: It's part of the reason why Jeeps are so popular
- 53:48Speaker 1: is because you can personalize them to your heart's desire.
- 53:52Speaker 1: And if you look at what Bronco's doing, they're inviting
- 53:54Speaker 1: the aftermarket in. They're saying, I know Jeep is not
- 53:57Speaker 1: supporting you. I know that Jeep is trying to sell
- 54:00Speaker 1: Chinese knockoff goods through Mopar. Bring your high quality components
- 54:04Speaker 1: to us and put them on our vehicle. Come on
- 54:06Speaker 1: a RB, let's work together. Yeah, we're going to give
- 54:09Speaker 1: you a vehicle to design and develop against ahead of
- 54:12Speaker 1: the aftermarket, got test vehicles before the media did. Yeah,
- 54:16Speaker 1: so that says a lot about their intentions. So I
- 54:19Speaker 1: think at the end of the day, this kind of
- 54:21Speaker 1: competitive pressure is so good for us as considering.
- 54:24Speaker 2: So I think so too. I mean, it'll be interesting
- 54:26Speaker 2: to see also how you know, how Toyota responds. They've
- 54:29Speaker 2: kind of got to be watching this and looking. You know,
- 54:32Speaker 2: they have a loyal following. But so I have two
- 54:34Speaker 2: questions for you. The first question is what model of
- 54:38Speaker 2: the eight billion models of Bronco would you buy? And
- 54:41Speaker 2: then the second question is would you actually buy it?
- 54:45Speaker 2: You know, I'd get I'd get the Sasquatch, but I
- 54:48Speaker 2: wouldn't buy one. There are all of the touch points
- 54:50Speaker 2: on that vehicle are just too cheap for me, you know,
- 54:54Speaker 2: you know, like frankly, when I when I get something
- 54:56Speaker 2: like I like to get the leather in the car
- 54:58Speaker 2: I liked. I like to get things. I like the tech,
- 55:01Speaker 2: and I don't trust you know, like I think I
- 55:03Speaker 2: was telling you that. Like I had a lane keeping
- 55:04Speaker 2: assist on and I was going through a four way
- 55:07Speaker 2: intersection and I almost got an accident. Because the cars
- 55:10Speaker 2: went and and almost took me another thing quick hands
- 55:13Speaker 2: and got it out. I just I don't like the
- 55:15Speaker 2: Bronco like. I don't know what it is like. I'm
- 55:17Speaker 2: trying to be you know, empirical in my analysis of it,
- 55:21Speaker 2: but that's different from how you feel. And really this
- 55:23Speaker 2: is how I personally feel. I feel like it's got
- 55:28Speaker 2: some great off road shops. I can't get past the
- 55:31Speaker 2: account and cash grab interior and exterior like it just
- 55:35Speaker 2: it does not feel like a crafted product. I'm not
- 55:39Speaker 2: saying that the wranglers necessarily like well crafted either, but
- 55:43Speaker 2: they've been doing it for a little bit longer. I
- 55:45Speaker 2: would not buy one. And to your defense, you recently
- 55:48Speaker 2: had a Raptor. I mean you and you love that car,
- 55:52Speaker 2: love the Raptor. If they would have put if they
- 55:54Speaker 2: would have put the same spend into the interior that
- 55:56Speaker 2: they do for a like all of the F one fifties,
- 55:59Speaker 2: I mean, the interior is frankly not that great on
- 56:02Speaker 2: the Raptor either. I mean, you know, they'll put a
- 56:05Speaker 2: you know, a little red stripe on the steering wheel,
- 56:06Speaker 2: but other than that, it's the same event, it's the
- 56:09Speaker 2: same dash, it's some everything I do like the landscape
- 56:12Speaker 2: screen that they're doing in the Bronco, but I would
- 56:14Speaker 2: get into it and I would just be like I
- 56:17Speaker 2: bought into hype and an accountants taking advantage of me.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Oh gotcha, that's just what I what I wouldn't be
- 56:23Speaker 2: able to get by that our test you goes fifty
- 56:25Speaker 2: eight thousand dollars, and I know that that's competitive with
- 56:28Speaker 2: with a you know, with a Rubicon and totally stuff
- 56:31Speaker 2: like that. But it's not there yet for me to
- 56:34Speaker 2: be honest. But it's hard to get into a vehicle
- 56:37Speaker 2: that you don't want to drive because it gives you
- 56:39Speaker 2: a headache.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Yeah, they've got to fix that top. Yeah, like it's
- 56:42Speaker 1: it's bad. Like I took it through a car wash
- 56:44Speaker 1: after I took it off road, and I'm like, is
- 56:46Speaker 1: it going to leak on? Yeah, it didn't leak through
- 56:48Speaker 1: the car wash, which I was happy with that. But
- 56:51Speaker 1: people who did not talk to each other that use
- 56:53Speaker 1: the vehicle within our team, they all mentioned the whistling top. Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 1: it's only because I'm half deaf that I didn't really
- 56:58Speaker 1: notice it. But if somebody like lined me up and
- 57:02Speaker 1: said you have to take a Forerunner or this, I
- 57:05Speaker 1: would take this.
- 57:07Speaker 2: The fore Runners at eight billion years old, right, So yeah, yeah,
- 57:10Speaker 2: it's just not competitive, right. You know, I would be
- 57:13Speaker 2: interested in the I don't know, Warhog or whatever they're
- 57:16Speaker 2: going to call the Raptor version of it if they
- 57:19Speaker 2: put some bucks in the interior, because it's like a
- 57:21Speaker 2: diminishing return for me. It's like at fifty eight grand
- 57:24Speaker 2: I don't care about the performance of whatever I would
- 57:27Speaker 2: I would like seats that don't feel like a hospital
- 57:30Speaker 2: incontinence pad. What about you? I think that sums it
- 57:33Speaker 2: up nicely your thoughts.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I would get probably similar packaging to what the
- 57:39Speaker 1: test vehicle was. I would probably get a different color,
- 57:43Speaker 1: and I would definitely get the manual transmission because that
- 57:45Speaker 1: would just be so charm joyful. I appreciated the vehicle
- 57:48Speaker 1: so much for what it was, but I could not
- 57:51Speaker 1: find myself at the end of it saying this is
- 57:53Speaker 1: something that I would buy. Yeah, and I think that
- 57:56Speaker 1: it is because I can get a gladiator with a Diesel.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Remember when when Laura z R two, when Microsoft came
- 58:02Speaker 1: out with their iPod competitor, and it had like all
- 58:05Speaker 1: these crazy whatever features.
- 58:07Speaker 2: But you wanted an iPod. Yeah, that's how I feel.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Yeah, And at the end of the day, I think
- 58:13Speaker 1: that the best product for overlanding that Forward makes today
- 58:17Speaker 1: is the Tremor.
- 58:18Speaker 2: The thing is the unloaded ride very well. For basically
- 58:22Speaker 2: the same price, you can get a Tremor. Yeah, so
- 58:24Speaker 2: there's the argument of value is that you can get that.
- 58:28Speaker 2: You know that they're they're big VA the Godzilla seven
- 58:31Speaker 2: to three and a Tremor. You know, if you because
- 58:35Speaker 2: at fifty eight you're not getting leather costs, its or whatever.
- 58:37Speaker 2: You're at an XLT package. Anyways, they're going to be
- 58:41Speaker 2: nearly the same price. You're getting a much better interior
- 58:43Speaker 2: for overlanding. I think that's a better choice. So so yeah,
- 58:46Speaker 2: that's that's just my overall feeling is like you're offering
- 58:49Speaker 2: less when you're offering more at similar price points because
- 58:53Speaker 2: you can, right, you know.
- 58:55Speaker 1: And maybe that's the case, or maybe it is just
- 58:57Speaker 1: it isn't Maybe it's just price pressures. To make the
- 58:59Speaker 1: Via goal perform so well and have such a great
- 59:02Speaker 1: drive train, they have to make compromises.
- 59:04Speaker 2: That's probably what they I'm not a Mustang guy either, yeah, exactly,
- 59:07Speaker 2: you know, but it is it is so fun to
- 59:10Speaker 2: see that it's here. It is.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Literally it's one of the most charming vehicles I've driven
- 59:15Speaker 1: in a very long time. People love it. I just
- 59:17Speaker 1: found that I could not make the connection to it.
- 59:19Speaker 1: To me personally, it didn't have much character.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Well I thought it had tons of character, but it
- 59:23Speaker 2: didn't have much connection to me. Yeah, Like the motor
- 59:26Speaker 2: to sound kind of sounded kind of like not that
- 59:28Speaker 2: the three six Penna stars anything.
- 59:30Speaker 1: No, it sounds terrible. Yeah, but yeah, I'm just going
- 59:32Speaker 1: to stop there. That two seven it rips. It's fun
- 59:35Speaker 1: at boogies, It's totally fun. So on the Bronco it
- 59:39Speaker 1: drives great, drive trains great. There are a lot of
- 59:41Speaker 1: compromises around fit, finish and material quality. If you're interested
- 59:45Speaker 1: in the very best forward overland vehicle right now, go
- 59:48Speaker 1: check out the Trumor, that's my opinion, or a Raptor because.
- 59:52Speaker 2: They are oh yeah, phenomenal. Yeah, yeah, I've never been.
- 59:55Speaker 2: I missed my Raptor. I mean even with the TRX,
- 59:57Speaker 2: I'm like, how is that possible with the TRX. Well,
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: the TRX is a better road car. The Raptor is
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: better if you're going to modify it to go off road. Okay,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: all right, that's interesting. We'll have to have a conversation
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: about that later. Yeah, all right, well, thank you all
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: for listening and we will talk to you next time.
