Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Only hungry children should be fed by the State
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The government's looking to move on from free school lunches
- 0:03Speaker 1: for every kid in a poor school. David Seymour told
- 0:06Speaker 1: me this week they're looking at tightening things up, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: I think that it's probably going to happen at present.
- 0:12Speaker 1: If your kid's school is signed up to the school
- 0:15Speaker 1: lunches program, your kid automatically gets a lunch, whether you
- 0:19Speaker 1: ask for one or not. The only way to stop
- 0:22Speaker 1: that is to actually contact the school and opt out
- 0:25Speaker 1: on an individual basis. Now, how many parents are doing that,
- 0:28Speaker 1: even if they're providing lunch to their kids. I reckon
- 0:31Speaker 1: they'll change this so that parents will have to opt
- 0:34Speaker 1: their kids in rather than the other way around. I
- 0:37Speaker 1: think it makes much more sense to do it that way.
- 0:40Speaker 1: If it's true that half the lunches aren't being eaten,
- 0:44Speaker 1: then why waste the resources taxpayer resource? After all, if
- 0:48Speaker 1: the food was good enough for the fifty percent of
- 0:50Speaker 1: kids who did eat it, then why wasn't it good
- 0:52Speaker 1: enough for the fifty percent who didn't. It's obvious they're
- 0:55Speaker 1: not hungry. There is an alternative for them. If there
- 0:59Speaker 1: really is a problem with the quality of the lunches,
- 1:02Speaker 1: then surely producing fewer of them will lower the costs
- 1:05Speaker 1: and perhaps allow quality to improve further. You know, do
- 1:09Speaker 1: less with do more with less. I must say it
- 1:13Speaker 1: seems odd that all the meals must be hot, when
- 1:17Speaker 1: most Kiwiks pre the previous labor government were raised on
- 1:21Speaker 1: a lunch of cold sandwiches, weren't we. I'm not saying
- 1:25Speaker 1: this is something some grumpy old man. I'm like thirty eight,
- 1:28Speaker 1: you know, but I never had a hot lunch in
- 1:31Speaker 1: my life. Seriously, hot meals were for dinner only. Anyway,
- 1:36Speaker 1: to those frustrated by the media coverage of these stories
- 1:39Speaker 1: this week, and there have been many of you, it
- 1:42Speaker 1: seems like changes are coming, which should mean only those
- 1:46Speaker 1: kids who are actually hungry will get fed by the state.
