Speaker 6: more information. But everybody had a great weekend, and we'll
• 1:40
Speaker 6: resist the temptation to say odd enough for you, because
• 1:43
Speaker 6: I think we all know the answer to that. Had
• 1:47
Speaker 6: scheduled former Charleston Mayor Danny Jones on the show today.
• 1:50
Speaker 6: Danny last minute wasn't feeling up to it this morning,
• 1:54
Speaker 6: completely understand. So we'll try to have Danny back on
• 1:56
Speaker 6: again real soon, maybe next week. He is not here today.
• 2:01
Speaker 6: We are going to talk a little sports though, because
• 2:03
Speaker 6: I called up my buddy Jim Workman of the state's
• 2:06
Speaker 6: premier sports publication, Wally and Whippy Sports Digest There's several
• 2:09
Speaker 6: things we'll talk about in sports, including the fact that
• 2:12
Speaker 6: as we speak right now at Marshall University may have
• 2:14
Speaker 6: a new athletic director. Board of Governors was set to
• 2:16
Speaker 6: me to d eight thirty this morning, I think it
• 2:18
Speaker 6: was eight thirty, and that was the only item on
• 2:20
Speaker 6: the agenda, and that was to approve the new contract
• 2:24
Speaker 6: or to prove the hiring i should say, of a
• 2:26
Speaker 6: new athletic director. So we'll see what happened there. I
• 2:28
Speaker 6: haven't had a chance to check in. We'll talk to
• 2:30
Speaker 6: Jim Workman about that, plus some other stuff going on
• 2:32
Speaker 6: in sports, including tonight is the championship for this region
• 2:36
Speaker 6: for the TBT, and it's the Best Virginia, the West
• 2:40
Speaker 6: Virginia alumni team taking on shell Shocked. Love that name. It's,
• 2:45
Speaker 6: as you may guess, a offshoot of the Marylon basketball
• 2:50
Speaker 6: program and they are a pretty good team. So that's
• 2:51
Speaker 6: happened to the Connell Steaming Convention Center tonight. So we'll
• 2:54
Speaker 6: talk about that a little bit and plus a little
• 2:56
Speaker 6: bit later on some political stuff, not with Jim, though
• 2:59
Speaker 6: we spared Jim the political stuff. You can weigh in
• 3:02
Speaker 6: on some things. I'm going to give some opinions on
• 3:04
Speaker 6: Big Le Pigli Wiggly Hotline three zero four three four
• 3:06
Speaker 6: five fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor Text three
• 3:09
Speaker 6: zero four nine three five five zero zero way. I
• 3:12
Speaker 6: feel like this should just become now a weekly feature
• 3:15
Speaker 6: on the show, kind of like we have Danny on.
• 3:18
Speaker 6: We had the adoption me please put it the week
• 3:19
Speaker 6: on Friday. It's the Cross Lanes traffic situation. Uh, and
• 3:23
Speaker 6: here to talk about that in a couple of other things.
• 3:25
Speaker 6: Delegate Andy Shamlon, Good morning, sir, and welcome to the show.
• 3:28
Speaker 3: Good morning, Dave. Good to be back.
• 3:30
Speaker 6: You want to have your own segment every Monday, cross
• 3:33
Speaker 6: Lanes Traffic with Andy Shamlin in the in the construction project.
• 3:36
  Speaker 3: I think I think that'd be good, but I'd have
• 3:38
Speaker 3: more more questions than I have answered on.
• 3:41
Speaker 6: Most What what what do you have to report? Because
• 3:44
Speaker 6: you've been on, like I said, a couple of times
• 3:46
Speaker 6: this month already with various single Uh what can what
• 3:49
Speaker 6: what do you have to tell us today?
• 3:51
Speaker 3: Well? I can report that the contractor should be starting
• 3:55
Speaker 3: back any day now on the Cross Land Road project.
• 3:59
Speaker 6: Okay, because because last time you were here, you addressed
• 4:02
Speaker 6: some rumors Uh. And I've seen some things on social
• 4:05
Speaker 6: media that you had to shoot down a little bit
• 4:06
Speaker 6: as well, where people have people said, you know this,
• 4:10
Speaker 6: that the funding was pulled and this isn't gonna happen,
• 4:12
Speaker 6: and that that was not the case.
• 4:13
Speaker 3: Yeah. That, yeah, that it definitely is not the case.
• 4:16
Speaker 3: And that has been one of the most persistent online rumors.
• 4:20
Speaker 3: And and you know, I hear it in person when
• 4:22
Speaker 3: I'm out. I was at Kroger's the other day and
• 4:24
Speaker 3: Cross Lanes, and I had two people come up to
• 4:27
Speaker 3: me and say, we know this project is canceled. And
• 4:30
Speaker 3: I said, listen, the project is not canceled. I understand
• 4:33
Speaker 3: why you think that it might be canceled because it
• 4:35
Speaker 3: has taken so long to restart, But the project is
• 4:40
Speaker 3: not canceled and it is moving forward. And I mean,
• 4:44
Speaker 3: I anticipate any day now that you'll see full mobilization
• 4:48
Speaker 3: of the contractor h to restart the project.
• 4:52
Speaker 6: And again, you've explained this last couple of times that
• 4:55
Speaker 6: you've been here. Uh, there was a delay. Explain again
• 4:58
Speaker 6: what the delay was.
• 4:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, the delay started back in October of twenty and
• 5:05
Speaker 3: twenty four, and the project halted because of utility right
• 5:11
Speaker 3: away relocation issues. And from October until now, basically almost
• 5:17
Speaker 3: a year going one a year, there's been no activity
• 5:21
Speaker 3: other than the utility companies relocating their polls and their infrastructure,
• 5:27
Speaker 3: and there was some miscommunication and confusion between all the
• 5:31
Speaker 3: entities involved. The change in administration from one governor to
• 5:35
Speaker 3: the next didn't help the matter with changing in personnel,
• 5:40
Speaker 3: and a couple of things just fell through the cracks,
• 5:42
Speaker 3: and there were utilities that had not moved their infrastructure
• 5:49
Speaker 3: and basically one utility company that had not and it
• 5:53
Speaker 3: was actually a very small amount of infrastructure that was remaining.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: But that's been remedied. That has been remedied now and
• 6:03
Speaker 3: we are ready to get started.
• 6:05
Speaker 6: So what exactly is the project? Well, I mean, do
• 6:09
Speaker 6: they remember what it is they're doing? I'm kidding, but
• 6:12
Speaker 6: I mean, but what is the whole project?
• 6:14
Speaker 3: Well, the purpose of the project, it was tied to
• 6:17
Speaker 3: the Roads to Prosperity bond, and the project is basically
• 6:22
Speaker 3: to attempt to alleviate the traffic congestion. So from the
• 6:26
Speaker 3: interstate to the four way stop, they're supposed to be
• 6:33
Speaker 3: five lanes, that's my understanding. Five lanes. When this project
• 6:36
Speaker 3: is completed with the turning lane in the middle and
• 6:39
Speaker 3: then from the four way stop to Kroger Andrew Jackson
• 6:45
Speaker 3: Middle School at the light four lanes. So that's the
• 6:50
Speaker 3: purpose of the project. Now, another key aspect of it
• 6:53
Speaker 3: was installing a large amount of drainage along along six
• 7:01
Speaker 3: twenty two and various spots to try to alleviate some
• 7:04
Speaker 3: of the flooding. And that's actually some of the first
• 7:07
Speaker 3: steps of the project that have already been done. There's
• 7:11
Speaker 3: still some drainage work also to be done with the project,
• 7:14
Speaker 3: but the vast majority of that has been complete.
• 7:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, because and that's folk Folks that live or work
• 7:20
Speaker 6: or drive through that area know that anytime we get
• 7:22
Speaker 6: some significant rain that frequently floods through there.
• 7:24
Speaker 3: Correct, cross Lanes is filled with drainage issues.
• 7:27
Speaker 6: Yeah, So how do we fix all that is? This
• 7:29
Speaker 6: is project going to alleviate some of it.
• 7:30
Speaker 3: It's going to alleviate some of it along the main road.
• 7:34
Speaker 6: Okay, but not the back roads. Yeah. Okay. Talking to
• 7:36
Speaker 6: deligate Andy Shamwin and we'll have you on again next
• 7:39
Speaker 6: week for another update on the cross Lanes project. I
• 7:41
Speaker 6: want to switch gears here. Oh, I do need to
• 7:43
Speaker 6: remind you that the Dave Island showing five eighty. Live

• 7:53
Speaker 6: wv metronews dot com the podcast menu. You do want
• 7:56
Speaker 6: to switch gears here for a moment. This past Saturday,
• 7:59
Speaker 6: the State Republican Party gathered in Morgantown and selected a
• 8:04
Speaker 6: new chair. There were three people that were vying for
• 8:06
Speaker 6: the position. Interviewed all three of them on Metro News Midday.
• 8:10
Speaker 6: Uh and uh, it came down to two. I guess
• 8:12
Speaker 6: that we're voted on West Perry and Delegate Josh Holstein
• 8:17
Speaker 6: out of Boone County, And the folks in the room
• 8:19
Speaker 6: chose not by a large margin, Delegate Holstein out of
• 8:24
Speaker 6: Boone County. I know he's a counterpart of yours in
• 8:27
Speaker 6: the legislature. How did everything you were up there? You're
• 8:29
Speaker 6: an executive committee is how did everything go up there?
• 8:32
Speaker 3: It was? It was a good meeting overall.
• 8:36
Speaker 6: You said, overall overall?
• 8:37
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, well, I know it would come as a
• 8:41
Speaker 3: shock that sometimes executive committees don't agree with him.
• 8:43
Speaker 6: What really would ever think. Well, but I mean that's
• 8:47
Speaker 6: part of the process. I mean, if every I mean
• 8:49
Speaker 6: the way I look at it is is if everybody
• 8:51
Speaker 6: goes in and everybody agrees on everything, and you know,
• 8:54
Speaker 6: you it's almost like a almost like a dictatorship for
• 8:57
Speaker 6: lack of a better term, you know, very authority, Harrian,
• 9:00
Speaker 6: you know where I mean, everybody gets you know, you
• 9:03
Speaker 6: could have disagreements and everybody shakes hands hopefully and goes on.
• 9:06
Speaker 3: That's right. And one of my favorite quotes has always been,
• 9:09
Speaker 3: and it's attributed to Lyndon Johnson, if two men are
• 9:14
Speaker 3: thinking alike on every issue, one man is thinking for
• 9:18
Speaker 3: the other, because if we don't have some disagreement, then
• 9:23
Speaker 3: that means we really aren't doing our due diligence on
• 9:28
Speaker 3: any specific issues. And you know that the state party
• 9:32
Speaker 3: chair race was very interesting because, as you mentioned, we
• 9:35
Speaker 3: did have three candidates, and all three candidates were well spoken,
• 9:40
Speaker 3: they presented themselves well, they worked to try to win
• 9:46
Speaker 3: that position. And another thing that I really appreciated is
• 9:51
Speaker 3: the two candidates at the end after the vote total
• 9:57
Speaker 3: was finalized, they both congratulate Delegate Holsteing for winning the position.
• 10:03
Speaker 3: So it really ended on a positive note, I think
• 10:06
  Speaker 3: for the party.
• 10:07
Speaker 6: So exactly for those who may not have attended these things, exactly,
• 10:11
Speaker 6: how are they chose? What's the process like?
• 10:14
Speaker 3: Well, the process is every executive committee member state executive
• 10:19
Speaker 3: committee committee members are there's an excess of just a ballpark,
• 10:27
Speaker 3: there's an excess of one hundred and twenty Okay, okay,
• 10:29
Speaker 3: So it's two members for each senatorial district. There's a
• 10:36
Speaker 3: male and a female, and those are actually elected positions.
• 10:40
Speaker 3: You have to run for that in the primary cycle,
• 10:44
Speaker 3: and every member has a vote, and the votes are
• 10:50
Speaker 3: taken this time by secret ballot. You wrote down the
• 10:56
Speaker 3: name of the individual you were supporting on a piece
• 10:59
Speaker 3: of paper, dropped it in a box, and then they
• 11:02
  Speaker 3: were tallied up.
• 11:03
Speaker 6: Okay, all right, And in the end it came down
• 11:06
Speaker 6: to mister Perry and mister Holstein and Josh Holstein, a
• 11:09
Speaker 6: younger guy twenty three I think twenty three years old
• 11:13
Speaker 6: out of Boom County. I've I've actually known him for
• 11:15
Speaker 6: quite for quite some time. Uh, he's he's taken the
• 11:18
Speaker 6: taking the reins of the party and I heard some
• 11:21
Speaker 6: of his interview. I think Mike Nolton from Metro News
• 11:23
Speaker 6: covered it. In person, and I actually heard some of
• 11:26
Speaker 6: his interview when I was when I was driving. Then
• 11:28
Speaker 6: this morning he talked about marketing, you know, doing a
• 11:30
Speaker 6: little bit better job possibly of marketing the Republican Party.
• 11:33
Speaker 6: What do you think he meant by that?
• 11:34
Speaker 3: I think that is that has a couple of different
• 11:38
Speaker 3: aspects to it. I think marketing is important. I also
• 11:42
Speaker 3: think education is very important. And what I mean by
• 11:47
Speaker 3: that is the fact that the Executive Committee voted in
• 11:50
Speaker 3: the previous meeting or or in the meeting meal a
• 11:53
Speaker 3: year ago, to close the Republican primary independence, which I
• 11:56
Speaker 3: voted in opposition to. I don't support that. But now
• 11:59
Speaker 3: that that decision has been made, and this was talked
• 12:02
Speaker 3: about in in Josh's speech, which I commend him for,
• 12:06
Speaker 3: we've got to make a conservative effort to make sure
• 12:09
Speaker 3: that independents know that they are going to have to
• 12:12
Speaker 3: change their registration if they want to participate in the
• 12:16
  Speaker 3: Republican primary.
• 12:17
Speaker 6: Was that taken up this time? Reversing that because I
• 12:20
Speaker 6: was told here's what I was told. I was told
• 12:23
Speaker 6: that there is a big ground swell of support from
• 12:26
Speaker 6: Republicans that they want to open the primaries back up again.
• 12:29
Speaker 6: But then last week I started getting intel that said no,
• 12:32
Speaker 6: that wasn't the case at all, and that the one
• 12:36
Speaker 6: of the one of the one of the folks that
• 12:38
Speaker 6: attended I talked. I talked to this person before the meeting.
• 12:42
Speaker 6: They said that they didn't think it would be brought
• 12:44
Speaker 6: up because something something changed, So it wasn't brought up.
• 12:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm not sure what changed exactly. I know what
• 12:50
Speaker 3: I was told was that that was done by resolution.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: And the Executive Committee has committees that fall under their
• 13:00
Speaker 3: their auspice, so to say, and the Resolutions Committee did
• 13:04
Speaker 3: not have the votes to take up a resolution.
• 13:08
Speaker 6: To if you're at home, if you're driving, pull over
• 13:11
Speaker 6: because you're gonna have to write this down. This is
• 13:13
Speaker 6: going to require. Like you're a school teacher by trade,
• 13:15
Speaker 6: what would you say, get out pen and paper.
• 13:17
Speaker 3: Get out your pen and paper, take notes.
• 13:18
Speaker 6: Do they still say that in public school? I did
• 13:21
Speaker 6: just want to of course you do, all right, So
• 13:23
Speaker 6: you said that you were that you were not originally
• 13:26
Speaker 6: in favor if I heard you rite of closing the primary.
• 13:29
Speaker 6: Basically what that means is is if I'm a registered independent,
• 13:32
Speaker 6: you know, I could go in in the primary and
• 13:34
Speaker 6: I could request a certain ballot I could say, well,
• 13:37
Speaker 6: I'm an independent, but I want a Republican bout or
• 13:39
Speaker 6: I want a Democrat abouter, whatever the case may be.
• 13:41
Speaker 6: And they decided to do away with that. And one
• 13:43
Speaker 6: of the reasons was is that they there was a
• 13:46
Speaker 6: a I guess a large group of people within the
• 13:50
Speaker 6: Republican Party that are concerned about their words rhinos and
• 13:54
Speaker 6: people wrote, you know, that's Republican in name only, uh
• 13:57
Speaker 6: and and I guess there's two arguments you know about that.
• 14:01
Speaker 6: But but but you are somebody that was not in favor,
• 14:04
Speaker 6: of course in the primaries. Why is that?
• 14:06
Speaker 3: I think if you look at the majorities that we've
• 14:08
Speaker 3: built politically in West Virginia, speaking of Republican majorities, I
• 14:14
Speaker 3: don't think we could have done that without the support
• 14:16
Speaker 3: of independence. And most of these legislative districts do not
• 14:21
Speaker 3: have a majority of Republicans. You have, you know, what's
• 14:24
Speaker 3: very common is say thirty five percent to forty percent
• 14:29
Speaker 3: or registered Republicans. The next highest majority, say thirty are
• 14:34
Speaker 3: independents and then Democrats. So in most districts, Republicans are
• 14:40
Speaker 3: not even a majority yet. And I think if we
• 14:43
Speaker 3: disenfranchise independent voters, kick them out of our primary. Over time,
• 14:48
Speaker 3: I mean there may be some short term political gain
• 14:51
Speaker 3: from that, because I do think some people will switch parties,
• 14:55
Speaker 3: but I think long term, if Independence can only participate
• 14:59
Speaker 3: in the Demomocratic primary, you're going to over time you're
• 15:04
Speaker 3: going to help Democratic Party.
• 15:06
Speaker 6: And I think this is especially true in southern West Virginia.
• 15:09
Speaker 6: And I know of a couple of your counterparts of
• 15:12
Speaker 6: the legislature that represent areas of southern West Virginia that
• 15:16
Speaker 6: were full stop against this. You know that because they
• 15:18
Speaker 6: said you don't want in particular told me you don't
• 15:20
Speaker 6: realize how much this is going to hurt you in
• 15:23
Speaker 6: Logan Boone, Mingo McDow, Wyoming counties right.
• 15:27
Speaker 3: And and another component to this too, I think I'm
• 15:31
Speaker 3: I have a unique perspective because you know, when I
• 15:34
Speaker 3: register my students to vote, which is something I did
• 15:37
Speaker 3: long before I was ever a candidate for the House,
• 15:41
Speaker 3: most of them register as independents. Younger people do not
• 15:45
Speaker 3: really want to be affiliated with either party, which you know,
• 15:48
Speaker 3: I can understand on some level because our politics is
• 15:52
Speaker 3: so toxic right now and younger people are not wanting
• 15:57
Speaker 3: that party label right now. I realize you can make
• 15:59
Speaker 3: an argument you say, well, if you don't want the
• 16:01
Speaker 3: party label, then you shouldn't be able to participate. I
• 16:03
Speaker 3: respect that argument, understand it. I just don't to me.
• 16:08
Speaker 3: I weigh out the pros and cons, and they're far
• 16:11
Speaker 3: more negatives as far as I'm concerned with closing the primary,
• 16:15

Speaker 6: Well as it comes to the Happy Gilmore movie. And

Speaker 6: so I watched the first one, and after watching the

Speaker 11: You're right, And you know I went into it feeling
• 21:35
Speaker 11: that and thinking that, and I was still like stunned.
• 21:38
Speaker 6: Okay, it's it's bad. Stunned by how bad it was.
• 21:41
Speaker 6: It's bad. Uh So your health is better now.
• 21:44
Speaker 11: Yes, I'm feeling much better, and uh you know, the
• 21:48
Speaker 11: after care part of that is over now. And yeah,
• 21:51
Speaker 11: I'm gonna watch what I eat and drink. I believe,
• 21:53
  Speaker 11: I hope.
• 21:54
Speaker 6: Okay, that's part of the anatomy that I'm not comfortable
• 21:57
Speaker 6: in talking about. Just so you know, I'm I'm glad
• 22:00
Speaker 6: you better. So you said, I know you're a Reds guy.
• 22:03
Speaker 6: You complimented me on my red shirt. I love on today.
• 22:06
Speaker 6: All right, So talk about where the Reds are right now.
• 22:09
Speaker 11: I tell you what, I'm excited about where they are
• 22:11
  Speaker 11: because they're winning. I mean, I think they're seven and
• 22:14
Speaker 11: three over the last ten games. They've got a tough
• 22:17
Speaker 11: stretch coming this week, they got the Dodgers coming in,
• 22:20
Speaker 11: but they are six and a half games out of
• 22:23
  Speaker 11: first place.
• 22:24
Speaker 6: I know a lot of people have been talking.
• 22:25
Speaker 11: About the wild card, and they're one game out of
• 22:28
Speaker 11: the wild card right now. But think about this. They
• 22:32
Speaker 11: in the Central Division in the National League. You've got
• 22:35
Speaker 11: the Cubs and the Brewers. They're tied for first. They're
• 22:40
Speaker 11: playing each other three game series this week. So there's
• 22:44
Speaker 11: a chance that the Reds can gain some ground. And
• 22:48
Speaker 11: you know, if you get you know, four games out
• 22:51
Speaker 11: of first place at this point in the season, right
• 22:54
Speaker 11: before the trade deadline, I think you're.
• 22:56
  Speaker 6: In good shape.
• 22:57
  Speaker 9: Man.
• 22:57
Speaker 11: I know that the schedule's shaping up to be a
• 22:59
Speaker 11: little bit tough, but the Reds are really playing good
• 23:02
Speaker 11: ball right now. They're getting some timely hitting. You know,
• 23:05
Speaker 11: they only scored two runs yesterday, but they only needed to. Yeah,
• 23:08
Speaker 11: they won two to one. But when they need runs,
• 23:11
Speaker 11: they're able to manufacture some runs. They weren't, as Terry
• 23:14
Speaker 11: Francona said after the game yesterday, they weren't knocking the
• 23:17
Speaker 11: ball around the yard yesterday. But you know, if the
• 23:21
Speaker 11: need arises, they can do that as well. I think
• 23:24
Speaker 11: things are shape enough for it to be a really
• 23:25
Speaker 11: nice summer in Cincinnati.
• 23:27
Speaker 6: We're talking to Jim Workman again of Wally Wimpy's a
• 23:29
Speaker 6: Dave Allen Show and five eighty Live is brought to
• 23:31
Speaker 6: you part by Morgan Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
• 23:34
Speaker 6: Rin Baker, WVU athletic director, got a contract extension that
• 23:39
Speaker 6: was actually announced live on talk line with the Meadows
• 23:41
Speaker 6: and Wilson as they were interviewing doctor Michael Benson. But
• 23:44
Speaker 6: who president a WVU? What do you think? What's you
• 23:46
  Speaker 6: take on that?
• 23:47
  Speaker 11: I like that, I mean, I like stability. I mean,
• 23:50
Speaker 11: right now, in college athletics, stability is rare, I think,
• 23:55
Speaker 11: especially with coaches and players moving. But to have somebody
• 24:00
Speaker 11: as an athletic director that has already really proven himself.
• 24:04
Speaker 11: He's accomplished quite a bit in his short time at
• 24:07
Speaker 11: West Virginia, I think, I mean, who else you going
• 24:10
Speaker 11: to get that's as good as Rin Baker. I think
• 24:14
Speaker 11: that it's good to sign him and to let him
• 24:17
Speaker 11: continue his good work that he's I think it's an
• 24:21
Speaker 11: exciting time to be in Morgantown right now.
• 24:23
Speaker 6: I've talked to you in the past about the excitement
• 24:25
Speaker 6: about the WVU football program, and I'm driving into works
• 24:28
Speaker 6: twenty and I sixty four and I look up and
• 24:29
Speaker 6: I see rich Rod on a giant billboard. He says,
• 24:32
Speaker 6: this is Mountain their football. There's still a lot, a
• 24:36
Speaker 6: lot of excitement around this team. I believe so too.
• 24:39
Speaker 11: I mean, again, things have changed in college football, and
• 24:43
Speaker 11: he's got a lot of new players, but I think
• 24:46
Speaker 11: the attitude is what people are excited about. I mean,
• 24:49
Speaker 11: rich Rod and his coaching staff are bringing that attitude
• 24:53
Speaker 11: back from seventeen, eighteen, twenty years ago, and I think
• 24:57
Speaker 11: that's exactly what people are excited about.
• 25:00
Speaker 6: I talked about this with Tom Bragg at the Midday
• 25:01
Speaker 6: Show the other day, and I think maybe you and
• 25:02
Speaker 6: I have talked about it as well. I think there
• 25:04
Speaker 6: was a feeling, uh in Morgantown from a lot of
• 25:07
Speaker 6: the older guys, the guys, the alumni, the a lot
• 25:10
Speaker 6: of the players that under maybe under Neil Brown, maybe
• 25:14
Speaker 6: under Dana Holgerson. Not saying that I mean, because Neil
• 25:17
Speaker 6: Brown was just such a nice guy, but I mean Holgerson, Okay,
• 25:21
Speaker 6: uh So my experiences with him were not great, but
• 25:26
Speaker 6: they didn't really feel welcome. I had Joe's Wet on
• 25:30
Speaker 6: the show a couple of weeks ago, and he talked
• 25:32
Speaker 6: about that they said, you know, us old guys just
• 25:34
Speaker 6: didn't feel like that, that they didn't really roll out
• 25:37
Speaker 6: the red carpet for us. And that's something that rich
• 25:40
Speaker 6: Rod is is real big because he gets it. Yeah,
• 25:42
  Speaker 6: I think you're right.
• 25:43
Speaker 11: I think the that was the the feeling that a
• 25:47
Speaker 11: lot of the players had, and I think that there
• 25:50
Speaker 11: was something to it. But you know, when you got
• 25:53
Speaker 11: guys that played under rich Rod and had great success
• 25:58
Speaker 11: and they've moved on and there they've coming, they're coming
• 26:01
Speaker 11: back and creating that team again. I mean, one thing
• 26:05
Speaker 11: about the attitude is rich Rod has said repeatedly that
• 26:10
Speaker 11: you're going to work hard and you know, beyond your abilities,
• 26:14
Speaker 11: beyond you know, trying to put a roster together with
• 26:18
Speaker 11: certain players. You're going to work hard and if you
• 26:21
Speaker 11: can't handle that hard work, you're not going to make it.
• 26:23
Speaker 11: And I think that's where it starts with West Virginia football,
• 26:26
Speaker 11: and I think that's what people are excited about.
• 26:29
  Speaker 9: Talking to you.
• 26:30
Speaker 6: Jim Workman of Wally Wimpy's down the Road in Huntington.
• 26:33
Speaker 6: Gerald Harrison is new to be named the Marshall Athletic
• 26:37
Speaker 6: Director and I don't know their board of governors was
• 26:41
Speaker 6: going to meet at eight thirty this morning, and that
• 26:43
Speaker 6: I'm told that was the only item on the agenda.
• 26:45
Speaker 6: I don't know that they've actually announced that publicly yet, right,
• 26:49
  Speaker 6: But you're and he's just a guy that's coming in
• 26:52
Speaker 6: from Austin P, Austin pH. He'd been there for some time.
• 26:56
Speaker 6: Your your thoughts on that possible hire, which looks like
• 26:59
Speaker 6: it's going to happen. Yep.
• 27:00
Speaker 11: Well, I'm looking for a press release. Don't see it yet.
• 27:04
Speaker 11: Expect that's going to happen. That's been the rumor. I mean,
• 27:07
Speaker 11: I don't know anything about him. I mean, but then again,
• 27:10
Speaker 11: we didn't know anything about Charles Huff when he came in.
• 27:13
  Speaker 11: I know, this is Austin P. Is not a d
• 27:17
Speaker 11: one or you know, a premier conference. They don't come
• 27:22
  Speaker 11: from a premier conference, So I don't know. I mean,
• 27:25
Speaker 11: he did spend some time at Duke, he did spend
• 27:28
Speaker 11: some time at another power for but I don't know.
• 27:32
Speaker 11: The jury's kind of out. I mean, I want to
• 27:35
Speaker 11: see the introduction of him and to see what type
• 27:38
Speaker 11: of energy brings and what his ideas are. Of course,
• 27:41
Speaker 11: so we'll give him a chance.
• 27:43
Speaker 6: Well, you know, and when I had Tom Bragg on
• 27:45
Speaker 6: the show. We talked about this on Friday. I met
• 27:47
Speaker 6: your news midday. Something I didn't realize when he was
• 27:49
Speaker 6: at Duke, mister Harrison, Gerald Harrison actually was in charge
• 27:55
Speaker 6: of all the budgets, not just the athletic department, if
• 27:58
Speaker 6: it was budgetary at Duke. From what Tom Bragg says,
• 28:01
Speaker 6: and don't have any reason doubt him because he's the
• 28:04
Speaker 6: great Tom Bragg. From what he says, he handled everything
• 28:08
Speaker 6: down there. And I say that because a big part,
• 28:11
Speaker 6: the biggest part these used to be athletic directors in college. Jim.
• 28:14
Speaker 6: You know, you take care of the scheduling, you know,
• 28:16
Speaker 6: you take care of for so now it's all about fundraising.
• 28:19
Speaker 6: I mean that's that's the job of an athletic director
• 28:21
Speaker 6: with Nil and everything it's about it's all about it's
• 28:24
Speaker 6: all about the money now because and you're also looking
• 28:26
Speaker 6: at Marshall's got I mean, how many new players this year.
• 28:29
Speaker 6: I mean that you're not going to recognize bunch of
• 28:31
Speaker 6: the players. I mean, I mean Huff took half the
• 28:34
Speaker 6: team with him, you know, when he went down South.
• 28:37
Speaker 6: So that's a big part of it. Now, it really is,
• 28:39
Speaker 6: and you know it's it's gonna be tough.
• 28:41
Speaker 11: I mean, Marshall's gonna always be second in the state
• 28:45
Speaker 11: of West Virginia, the West Virginia, There's no question about that.
• 28:49
Speaker 11: Except for their alumni. You know, people that have a
• 28:52
Speaker 11: connection to Huntington or a connection to Marshall University, especially
• 28:55
Speaker 11: the sports program, that is who you're gonna have to
• 28:58
Speaker 11: hit up. So I hope that they can, you know,
• 29:02
Speaker 11: bring in the Chad Pennington's, the Byron Left, which is
• 29:06
Speaker 11: all those famous alumni, and maybe do some fundraising. And
• 29:10
Speaker 11: you know, success always helps too. Yeah, if you have
• 29:13
Speaker 11: success on the field, people want to come out and
• 29:15
Speaker 11: watch you, they want to give. So, you know, let's
• 29:19
Speaker 11: pray that the Marshall Thundering Herd do not have a
• 29:22
Speaker 11: bad season. I mean, there's it's kind of lining up.
• 29:25
Speaker 11: A lot of people are picking them, maybe even last
• 29:27
Speaker 11: in the Sun Belt because of the exodus of all
• 29:30
Speaker 11: the players with Southern Miss with Charles Huff.
• 29:33
Speaker 6: But they got to have.
• 29:34
Speaker 11: A decent season and let's see Tony Gibson rally the
• 29:37
Speaker 11: troops and and hopefully they can put themselves in a
• 29:41
Speaker 11: good position to raise some funds that are much needed
• 29:44
Speaker 11: right now in college athletics.
• 29:47
Speaker 6: I will say this too. It is kind of cool
• 29:50
Speaker 6: just as a sports fan to look on the sidelines
• 29:54
Speaker 6: and know that here in a few weeks we're going
• 29:55
Speaker 6: to be looking at rich Rod from Morgantown. You can
• 29:57
Speaker 6: be looking at Tony Gibson, the pride of van West Virginia,
• 30:00
Speaker 6: on the sidelines for the premier football programs in the
• 30:03
Speaker 6: state of West Virginia. That you got rich Rod and
• 30:05
Speaker 6: you got Tony Gibson. Yeah.
• 30:07
Speaker 11: You know, Tony has a really good resume, and it's
• 30:11
Speaker 11: really surprising to me to see that his career ended
• 30:15
Speaker 11: up being head coach at Marshall because you know, he
• 30:18
Speaker 11: was a defensive coordinator that was, you know, in demand
• 30:23
Speaker 11: all of his career. He had a lot of good success.
• 30:25
Speaker 11: Of course, he's really known as a mountaineer, but you know,
• 30:30
Speaker 11: he gets his chance just like Doc Holliday did. Really,
• 30:32
Speaker 11: it's kind of Doc part two because Doc had the
• 30:36
  Speaker 11: same kind of resume. He's a WVU guy, he's a
• 30:39
Speaker 11: Hurricane guy, and he ended up having some good seasons
• 30:42
Speaker 11: in Huntington as well. So we hope the best for Tony.
• 30:47
Speaker 11: But it's probably the toughest time right now to build
• 30:50
Speaker 11: a football program from scratch.
• 30:52
Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, you're absolutely right about that. Twenty two
• 30:54
Speaker 6: minutes away from ten older. It alts to protect themselves
• 30:56
Speaker 6: against severe respiratory disease. Talk to your doctor about flu,
• 30:59
Speaker 6: covid now team and RSV vaccines, riskless, do more, get
• 31:03
Speaker 6: started vaccines dot gov pete for by the US Department
• 31:05
Speaker 6: of Health and Human Services. Before we let you go,
• 31:07
Speaker 6: TVT the Basketball Championship is continuing tonight at Kyle sum
• 31:12
Speaker 6: And Convention Center. We'll have caverage, of course, all over
• 31:15
Speaker 6: Metro News. And it's this team that Best Virginia is
• 31:19
Speaker 6: playing is called shell Shocked. Yeah, love that name, play
• 31:22
Speaker 6: off the Terrapins name out of Maryland. It's a good team.
• 31:24
Speaker 11: Yeah, you know, it's the TPT is so fun. I mean,
• 31:28
Speaker 11: I've attended anytime they've been in Charleston, and the atmosphere
• 31:31
Speaker 11: has been great. The crowds were down a little bit,
• 31:35
Speaker 11: I believe, in the first couple of rounds in Charleston,
• 31:37
Speaker 11: but I'm expecting that they're going to pick up tonight
• 31:40
Speaker 11: because you know, it's it's a nationally televised game. You
• 31:43
Speaker 11: get the show off Charleston, the competition is a little
• 31:47
Speaker 11: bit bigger, and you know, again it's just so much fun.
• 31:51
Speaker 11: I love the elam ending. I mean, just a big
• 31:53
Speaker 11: fan of that. If you don't know what that is
• 31:56
Speaker 11: as a college, as a basketball fan, watch it tonight
• 32:00
Speaker 11: because it's it changes the game in a good way.
• 32:03
Speaker 11: You know, I'm not always a type of guy that loves,
• 32:07
Speaker 11: you know, straying from tradition, but uh, the elam ending
• 32:11
Speaker 11: has changed basketball for the better.
• 32:14
Speaker 6: Do you think do you see it? I mean, because
• 32:17
Speaker 6: it's it's kind of exclusive to the TBT and things
• 32:19
Speaker 6: like that, do you do you see an opportunity at
• 32:21
Speaker 6: some point for you know, that to be instituted maybe
• 32:23
Speaker 6: in some other leagues. Maybe it's like I don't think
• 32:25
Speaker 6: it's going to be NBA or D one college, but
• 32:27
Speaker 6: I mean maybe some some some higher places than than
• 32:30
Speaker 6: the than the tb T.
• 32:31
Speaker 11: I think the only reason why they would not implement
• 32:34
Speaker 11: the elam ending is pride, you know that they didn't
• 32:37
Speaker 11: think of it first, because I mean, it's absolutely the
• 32:40
Speaker 11: best thing for basketball, because the worst part of basketball
• 32:44
Speaker 11: was the last four minutes of the game, where people
• 32:46
Speaker 11: were out each other exactly. This change is it makes
• 32:49
Speaker 11: it more fun, more competitive.
• 32:52
Speaker 6: I forgot to mention when I because I'm so used
• 32:54
Speaker 6: to saying Jim Workman and wall and whippies. I forgot
• 32:56
Speaker 6: to say president of the Western or head of the
• 32:59
Speaker 6: Westernion Sports Writers Association. Yeah, executive direct executive director of the.
• 33:03
Speaker 11: West Virginia Sports Writers Association. I want people to go
• 33:07
Speaker 11: to wv sw A dot org. That's the Sports Writers
• 33:11
  Speaker 11: Association website.
• 33:13
  Speaker 6: We're building that.
• 33:14
Speaker 11: There's a ton of history on West Virginia sports in there,
• 33:17
Speaker 11: and uh, it's it's really worth your while and we're
• 33:21
Speaker 11: continuing to add to it. So if it has to
• 33:25
Speaker 11: do with sports in West Virginia you've got a question,
• 33:28
Speaker 11: it's a good place to go.
• 33:30
Speaker 6: Well, on your way out the door, speaking of sports history,
• 33:33
Speaker 6: then of the last office that you see on your
• 33:35
Speaker 6: way out of the out of the building here, eleven
• 33:37
Speaker 6: eleven is Fred Persinger's office, So you might want to
• 33:39
Speaker 6: stick your head in there, and it's just ask ask
• 33:42
Speaker 6: Fred for some contributions. He's the man, he's friend's the man.
• 33:46
Speaker 6: You're also the man. I appreciate you being here, Glad
• 33:48
Speaker 6: that you're back to back to semi normal, Appreciate that.
• 33:50
Speaker 6: Ready to cheer on your Cleveland Browns. Well this season,
• 33:54
Speaker 6: we'll see I spent a lot of time this past
• 33:57
Speaker 6: week Ady watching the NFL Network because they were doing
• 34:00
Speaker 6: and that, you know, live from the different training camps.
• 34:03
  Speaker 13: Uh.
• 34:03
Speaker 6: Did you see what happened? And I'll let you go
• 34:05
Speaker 6: on this. Did you see the uh what happened in
• 34:08
  Speaker 6: the Cowboys camp?
• 34:09
  Speaker 12: No?
• 34:10
Speaker 6: Well, dak through some interceptions, okay, I mean and Cowboy
• 34:13
Speaker 6: fans were already you know, suicidal over that. Right now.
• 34:16
Speaker 6: It's it's training camp and one of the one of
• 34:19
Speaker 6: the guys I don't remember who it was that intercepted
• 34:21
Speaker 6: do pass he he he, and the other defensive players
• 34:25
Speaker 6: go over to the sidelines and pick up a kid
• 34:28
Speaker 6: that was there cheering it on, and they just carry
• 34:30
Speaker 6: the kid around. It was a great moment in sports.
• 34:32
Speaker 6: I mean, if you like that. The kid kid was
• 34:34
Speaker 6: loving it like a three or four year old kid.
• 34:35
Speaker 6: They just went and picked him up and you know,
• 34:37
Speaker 6: carried him around. There's good stuff there.
• 34:38
  Speaker 4: Wow.
• 34:39
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 34:39
Speaker 11: I've actually been to the Cowboys training camp and Oxnard before. Really, yeah,
• 34:43
Speaker 11: I've been. I was out that way went one day.
• 34:46
Speaker 11: It was when Bill Parcells was the head coach and
• 34:49
Speaker 11: Sean Payton was the offensive coordinator. So it was a
• 34:53
Speaker 11: fun time. I've been to a few training camps, so
• 34:55
Speaker 11: uh also, if you got a moment, Yeah, JJ roberts
• 34:59
Speaker 11: from Cable Midland went to Marshall. You know, he went
• 35:03
Speaker 11: the Wake Forest at first, but now he's an undrafted
• 35:06
Speaker 11: free agent at Tampa Bay. He's in the training camp
• 35:08
Speaker 11: and there's articles out there saying that he's going to
• 35:11
  Speaker 11: make the team.
• 35:12
Speaker 6: That's awesome because I had an opportunity to work on
• 35:16
Speaker 6: a project with JJ robertson. You've known him and his
• 35:18
Speaker 6: family for some time. What a quality young man. I mean,
• 35:22
Speaker 6: this is the kind of guy that you really want
• 35:24
Speaker 6: to see succeed, especially with his story and the fact
• 35:28
Speaker 6: that he was undrafted, and like I read the same thing,
• 35:30
Speaker 6: he's probably going to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
• 35:33
  Speaker 2: Yep.
• 35:33
Speaker 11: He's real versatile, which probably is because of his time
• 35:36
Speaker 11: at Wake nd Marshall. But not only is he safety,
• 35:39
Speaker 11: but they are trying him at Nickel, so you know,
• 35:43
Speaker 11: having that versatility is going to help him make that team.
• 35:46
Speaker 11: And he's going to be with Baker Mayfield. All Right,
• 35:48
Speaker 11: you're a guy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Hey, I like Baker
• 35:52
  Speaker 11: all right.

Speaker 6: writes about it at WV Metro News. A murdered suicide
• 43:02
Speaker 6: in the Miami area of Canaw County. That's out in
• 43:04
Speaker 6: Cabin Creek. A father and son here during the one
• 43:08
Speaker 6: am hour early Saturday. A woman called Metro nine one
• 43:11
Speaker 6: one and said that her son was on the front
• 43:14
Speaker 6: porch with a gunshot wound. Now, when deputies showed up,
• 43:16
Speaker 6: they found the adult son had died and the father
• 43:19
Speaker 6: was dead in the front yard. Apparently the father shot
• 43:21
Speaker 6: the son and then turned the gun on himself. Authorities
• 43:24
Speaker 6: do believe alcohol was involved either way. Terrible family tragedy.
• 43:28
Speaker 6: Jeff writes about it at WV metronews dot com. Let

Speaker 6: now with the British Prime Minister. They're meeting in Scotland,

Speaker 6: not going away. And I don't know what the answer is.

Speaker 6: thing that is worse right now than the approval rating
• 49:56
Speaker 6: of Donald Trump? And it's actually quite a quite substantial
• 50:00
Speaker 6: worse than the approval rating of President of Trump right now?
• 50:03
Speaker 6: You know what that is? Lay it on me. The
• 50:05
Speaker 6: approval rating of Democrats thirty four percent. Yeah, a favorability
• 50:11
Speaker 6: according to one poll, a favorability rating overall in generic
• 50:14
Speaker 6: questions of the Democratic Party is at thirty four percent
• 50:18
  Speaker 6: in America.
• 50:18
Speaker 7: Yes, so, mister president. We don't like the way you're
• 50:20
Speaker 7: doing things. We don't approve of the economy, we don't
• 50:22
Speaker 7: approve of the terrorists, but we still like you more
• 50:24
Speaker 7: than we like the Democrats. That's the basic political story
• 50:27
Speaker 7: that we have right now. And just talk about being lost.
• 50:30
Speaker 7: I mean, what's this call it? They're lost the national
• 50:32
Speaker 7: Democratic part, they're lost. I would one hundred percent agree
• 50:36
Speaker 7: with that. And I don't see. And here's the thing
• 50:38
Speaker 7: about it, TJ. And I know you and I are
• 50:42
Speaker 7: usually on the same page on most things. Not on
• 50:44
Speaker 7: all things, but on most things. You and I are
• 50:45
Speaker 7: on the same page.
• 50:47
Speaker 6: Like it or not. The face of the faces, if
• 50:52
Speaker 6: you will, of the Democratic Party are people like AOC.
• 50:56
Speaker 6: They're people like Bernie Sanders. I know he's not not,
• 51:00
Speaker 6: you know, technically a Democrat, but he causes with him,
• 51:02
Speaker 6: he's an independent. That those are the faces of the
• 51:06
Speaker 6: Democratic Party. And anybody that screams that it's it's racism, well,
• 51:10
Speaker 6: you can't get more white than Bernie Sanders.
• 51:12
Speaker 7: Is on the far left. Base loves her, and they're
• 51:15
Speaker 7: voting with their pocketbooks. Yeah, she has raised millions upon
• 51:18
Speaker 7: millions upon millions of dollars for her next run, whereas
• 51:22
Speaker 7: the average Joe Blow Democrat in the House has raised
• 51:25
Speaker 7: a couple hundred thousand dollars. So you know, her base
• 51:28
Speaker 7: loves her. The problem is Dave the base isn't big enough.
• 51:31
Speaker 7: The base is not big enough. So you get outside
• 51:33
Speaker 7: that context and she fails.
• 51:35
Speaker 6: And the base still doesn't realize why Donald Trump won
• 51:39
Speaker 6: in the first place. That's the thing. They still don't
• 51:41
Speaker 6: realize that. And a great number of Democrats are saying
• 51:46
Speaker 6: the same thing. They're saying, if we're going to take
• 51:50
Speaker 6: back America or have a chance to even be relevant
• 51:52
Speaker 6: in America, we got to distance ourselves from A and now.
• 51:54
