Speaker 1: Hey guys, we are back on Normally, the show with
• 0:07
Speaker 1: normal-ish takes for when the news gets weird. I am
• 0:09
  Speaker 1: Mary Katherine Hamm.
• 0:10
Speaker 2: I'm Carol Markowitz. How are you, Mary Katherine?
• 0:13
Speaker 1: I'm doing good. Status quo, going to Orange Theory Hell Week.
• 0:18
Speaker 1: I feel like I've rode a small sea at this point.
• 0:23
Speaker 1: But you know what? It's a good reminder that whenever
• 0:26
Speaker 1: I'm lazy and don't go to the gym, I totally could.
• 0:29
Speaker 1: I'm fine. I'm living life. I'm subsisting on Slim Jims
• 0:32
Speaker 1: because I have no kitchen. At the end of this week,
• 0:35
Speaker 1: I'll probably look great.
• 0:37
Speaker 3: Fingers crossed for you. Again, I am very excited for
• 0:40
Speaker 3: your new kitchen. Mine was very life-changing.
• 0:44
Speaker 1: I'm excited, too. See, I needed to hear more about this.
• 0:48
Speaker 3: I mean, my process took a really long time. They
• 0:51
Speaker 3: said it was going to be like six weeks, and
• 0:53
Speaker 3: it was like eight months. I mean, until it was done.
• 0:57
Speaker 2: It was usable, you know, faster.
• 0:58
Speaker 3: But it really... changed how often I want to cook
• 1:04
Speaker 3: everything it's in its own place like it's just very
• 1:08
Speaker 3: well organized and it has motivated me to cook much
• 1:12
Speaker 3: more often instead of being like let's just order in
• 1:15
Speaker 3: we hardly ever order in now.
• 1:17
Speaker 1: I love that. That's what I'm looking for. And organized
• 1:19
Speaker 1: is good. And I've had to vet that with my
• 1:21
Speaker 1: very organized husband, Steve. We're talking about reconfiguring cabinets and
• 1:26
Speaker 1: his thought is always practical. Where is everything going to go?
• 1:30
Speaker 1: So in fact, I have mapped all that out. Good, good.
• 1:35
  Speaker 1: I love it.
• 1:37
Speaker 3: So are you getting all of these Doomer posts? I'm
• 1:41
Speaker 3: freaking out my neighbor friends who are like, you know,
• 1:46
Speaker 3: should we be worrying? Cause you're worrying us. But I just,
• 1:49
  Speaker 3: my Twitter.
• 1:50
  Speaker 2: Feed is nonstop.
• 1:53
Speaker 3: Like you got to start preparing for, I mean, some
• 1:56
Speaker 3: of them are like 90 days with no water. I,
• 1:59
  Speaker 3: I have a large garage.
• 2:01
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 2:02
Speaker 3: Like I'm in New York city right now. Who is
• 2:04
Speaker 3: keeping the water in their apartments for 90 days? Like,
• 2:09
Speaker 3: tell me about these people.
• 2:10
Speaker 1: Yes. I, Yes, I have been getting it as in
• 2:14
Speaker 1: like such and such government says have three days of stuff.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: Such and such government says have this many days. The U.S.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: government is telling so and so to get ready. I
• 2:24
Speaker 1: think that this is a lot of it is a
• 2:26
Speaker 1: pre-election uptick. Yeah. Because there is a general concern about
• 2:32
Speaker 1: what happens in a post-election environment.
• 2:35
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 2:36
  Speaker 1: I think it's wise to prep. I don't.
• 2:39
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 2:40
Speaker 1: Wise to freak out all the time. Yeah.
• 2:43
Speaker 3: So I would say that the posts that I'm seeing, yeah,
• 2:46
Speaker 3: I'm seeing, you know, Britain tells their population to have,
• 2:50
Speaker 3: you know, supplies for three days or whatever. But the
• 2:53
Speaker 3: ones that I'm seeing are more like I work at
• 2:56
Speaker 3: an AI company and I'm telling you something big is coming. And,
• 2:59
Speaker 3: you know, you might have no power, no water pressure,
• 3:02
Speaker 3: no food deliveries for 90 days. And the 90 days, again,
• 3:06
Speaker 3: thing becomes an astronomical number. And all these things, like
• 3:11
Speaker 3: I'm reading one right now, 90 days is 90 gallons
• 3:13
  Speaker 3: per person.
• 3:14
Speaker 2: A family of four needs 360.
• 3:15
  Speaker 3: Like, what?
• 3:15
Speaker 2: Where is this going?
• 3:16
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 3:21
Speaker 3: Food barrels or water bricks, you know, just unscented bleach
• 3:25
Speaker 3: to treat stored water.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: We're all going to die.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: I do think these moments, if you're normie or normie adjacent,
• 3:37
Speaker 1: should be a moment to think about what you do
• 3:40
Speaker 1: have in your home and what you are prepared for,
• 3:44
Speaker 1: but not to assume that you need to have six
• 3:48
Speaker 1: months of off the grid supplies for yourself and your family.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: Right. Right. So there was also Dan Bongino, who was,
• 3:57
Speaker 3: you know, deputy director at the FBI. Now he's back
• 4:00
Speaker 3: to doing his show. He I think he was trying
• 4:03
Speaker 3: to bring down the temperature and he was like, look,
• 4:06
Speaker 3: you know, you should be prepared anyway.
• 4:09
Speaker 2: Get your stuff organized anyway.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: And then people took that like even Dan Bongino saying
• 4:13
Speaker 3: we should get ready. You know, like he he was
• 4:16
Speaker 3: trying to say what you're saying, which is it's not
• 4:18
Speaker 3: bad to be prepared and have some stuff on hand,
• 4:21
Speaker 3: you know, take care of your family, et cetera. But
• 4:24
Speaker 3: because he had been in his role, people took that.
• 4:28
  Speaker 2: Even more seriously.
• 4:30
Speaker 3: So, you know, during COVID, I famously posted in February
• 4:37
Speaker 3: of 2020 a list of things that friends and family
• 4:39
Speaker 3: in Asia were saying that they were missing or like
• 4:42
Speaker 3: were hard to get, like Tylenol or toilet paper. And
• 4:45
Speaker 3: I kept a lot of people in toilet paper through
• 4:48
Speaker 3: the pandemic. But there was also on that list like
• 4:50
Speaker 3: bottled water. Why would we lose bottled? Why would we
• 4:53
  Speaker 3: lose water?
• 4:53
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there's. I'm in the middle on this.
• 4:59
Speaker 1: I do think there is genuine concern warranted about, frankly,
• 5:07
Speaker 1: AI agents and what they're capable of and how we're
• 5:10
Speaker 1: preventing them from doing things to large systems. And like,
• 5:17
Speaker 1: I think that's an outside concern, like not a crazy concern,
• 5:20
Speaker 1: but a medium one. And I think people do because
• 5:24
Speaker 1: they are spoiled by the absolute miracle that is capitalism.
• 5:29
  Speaker 1: It is.
• 5:29
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 5:30
Speaker 1: I think they underestimate how quickly things can go wrong. Yes. Non-civilizational.
• 5:40
Speaker 1: Is that a good euphemism? And although I have to say,
• 5:45
Speaker 1: even though COVID was terrible, the fact that a lot
• 5:49
Speaker 1: of things did hold is weirdly encouraging. Right, right. Like
• 5:55
Speaker 1: even places like L.A. where things did get really out
• 5:59
Speaker 1: of hand in places, a lot of it stayed fairly normal. Now,
• 6:04
Speaker 1: we have a lot of downstream effects from that to
• 6:06
Speaker 1: this day. Of course. Of shutting off the economy.
• 6:10
Speaker 3: And there was, you know, supply chain issues and stuff,
• 6:12
Speaker 3: but it was okay. It was like tough to get
• 6:15
  Speaker 3: Lysol wipes.
• 6:16
Speaker 2: It was not, you know, civilization. It wasn't water.
• 6:19
Speaker 3: I'll just keep coming back to this. It wasn't like, hey,
• 6:22
Speaker 3: we have no drinking water. So- That's, you know, that's
• 6:26
Speaker 3: kind of the insanity that's going on on my Twitter feed.
• 6:29
Speaker 3: I think a lot of people are seeing it or
• 6:32
Speaker 3: are starting to see it. So we thought we would
• 6:34
  Speaker 3: address it here.
• 6:35
Speaker 1: Review the basics. Have a first aid kit. Chat with
• 6:41
Speaker 1: your family about what happens in emergency situations. Fill up
• 6:45
Speaker 1: your bathtub if the water turns off. Like these are
• 6:48
  Speaker 1: the basics.
• 6:49
  Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
• 6:51
Speaker 3: And, you know, stay armed.
• 6:52
  Speaker 2: That's the.
• 6:54
Speaker 1: It's funny when it was I think it was 2016
• 6:57
Speaker 1: right before Trump was elected, possibly right after. But whatever
• 7:03
Speaker 1: it was, I was talking to a liberal acquaintance who
• 7:07
Speaker 1: was telling me about a plan for, of course, in
• 7:10
Speaker 1: the Trump era. Suddenly, this person was a prepper influenced
• 7:15
Speaker 1: by politics and by Trump. And they told me all
• 7:18
Speaker 1: about their plans. And at the end of this long
• 7:21
Speaker 1: plan list and all the things they had and all
• 7:23
Speaker 1: the things they were going to do, I said, do
• 7:24
Speaker 1: you have any firearms? Hmm. And they were like, no.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: And I was like, hmm. Yeah. That is the key thing.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: So good luck with that.
• 7:34
Speaker 1: I will not be relying on you. Yeah.
• 7:39
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: What else is going on out there?
• 7:41
Speaker 1: Well, you know, we'll swerve from genuine doomerism to pole doomerism. Yeah.
• 7:50
Speaker 1: Which is some of what's going on in my feed today.
• 7:53
Speaker 1: I see something out of South Carolina where the Republican
• 7:58
Speaker 1: nominee Darlene Graham and Annie Andrews, the Democrat, are tied
• 8:02
  Speaker 1: at 48. I don't believe that. There's one out of
• 8:06
Speaker 1: Texas where Tallarico is up four points or so. But
• 8:11
Speaker 1: there are 16 percent in that poll.
• 8:14
Speaker 3: That poll is garbage.
• 8:19
Speaker 1: At this point in an election cycle, you have to
• 8:21
Speaker 1: be pushing the people you're talking to to say who
• 8:24
Speaker 1: they're likely to vote for.
• 8:26
Speaker 3: 16% undecided a few days away from the election day
• 8:29
Speaker 3: is a pointless poll.
• 8:30
Speaker 2: Why even put that out?
• 8:33
Speaker 3: But I would also say that the election in Israel...
• 8:38
Speaker 3: did not go the way people had thought it was
• 8:41
Speaker 3: going to go. They thought it was going to be
• 8:42
Speaker 3: a route for Netanyahu as, you know, as we're recording this,
• 8:47
Speaker 3: it has not been a route for Netanyahu. He's still
• 8:49
Speaker 3: in poll position to be forming the government. He didn't
• 8:52
Speaker 3: reach 61 seats, but, you know, he's the closest.
• 8:56
Speaker 2: So I would just say take.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: Polls with a grain of salt. And this is also,
• 9:01
Speaker 3: in Israel, this has been a story of Netanyahu's people
• 9:06
Speaker 3: not coming out in the same kind of numbers as
• 9:08
Speaker 3: his opponents and still and still he's like you know
• 9:14
Speaker 3: at the top of the heap.
• 9:15
Speaker 1: Well and the conventional wisdom left-leaning would be oh the
• 9:20
Speaker 1: revolt against Bibi is of course understood it's baked in
• 9:26
Speaker 1: how could anyone do anything different how could anyone disagree
• 9:29
Speaker 1: with me how could anyone act differently and that is
• 9:32
Speaker 1: the conventional wisdom mistake that has plagued Democrats in this
• 9:36
Speaker 1: country in the entire Trump era. Now, that doesn't mean
• 9:40
Speaker 1: that they're not outpacing Republicans in very serious ways and enthusiasm.
• 9:44
Speaker 1: They are. But I think their inability to realize that
• 9:48
Speaker 1: people have different motivations than they do clouds their judgment.
• 9:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, it absolutely does.
• 9:59
Speaker 3: Our guy, Marco Rubio joined the president on a stump speech,
• 10:04
Speaker 3: and he sounded pretty motivated to be on the team.
• 10:08
Speaker 3: So he said, our enemies are weaker, our country is stronger,
• 10:11
Speaker 3: and our people are safer because Donald J. Trump is
• 10:13
Speaker 3: president of the United States. And then he went on
• 10:17
Speaker 3: today to kick out the Cuban ambassador because Cuban officials
• 10:22
Speaker 3: interrupted Waltz's speech at the UN. Rubio signed an order
• 10:27
Speaker 3: kicking out the Cuban diplomat who was being sent back
• 10:30
Speaker 3: to Havana. Within 24 hours. He is just awesome and amazing.
• 10:35
Speaker 3: And we're not allowed to like him too much. We're
• 10:37
Speaker 3: not allowed to like him too much.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: He just does good things. And I also enjoy that
• 10:43
Speaker 1: he sounds optimistic about our country. A lot of politics
• 10:49
  Speaker 1: is doomerism.
• 10:51
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 10:52
Speaker 1: He doesn't feel that way ever. Right.
• 10:55
Speaker 2: I mean, that's why we liked him in 2016, too.
• 10:57
Speaker 1: Right. Even when he's very serious and tackling very serious problems,
• 11:02
Speaker 1: as he often is as Secretary of State, he sounds
• 11:05
Speaker 1: aspirational about this country. And that is something people respond to. Yeah. Yeah.
• 11:11
Speaker 3: So he's, you know, out there giving the speeches. People
• 11:15
Speaker 3: are making a lot of Trump coming to Mississippi and
• 11:19
Speaker 3: giving a speech and.
• 11:20
  Speaker 2: Places like that.
• 11:22
Speaker 3: I think that's the right move, because if you skip
• 11:25
Speaker 3: a lot of places and you think you have it
• 11:27
Speaker 3: in the bag, You end up being Hillary Clinton, not
• 11:30
Speaker 3: visiting Wisconsin in 2016. And you don't want to be
• 11:33
Speaker 3: Hillary Clinton in 2016, for sure.
• 11:37
Speaker 1: Now, I think, look, presidents often go to very partisan,
• 11:42
Speaker 1: locked-in places, particularly in midterm years, because they might be
• 11:49
Speaker 1: off-putting in a purple place, but they can do the
• 11:53
Speaker 1: thing they're meant to do in a red or blue place,
• 11:55
Speaker 1: which is boost the turnout. That is what they are
• 12:00
Speaker 1: there for. So I don't think you should always read
• 12:03
Speaker 1: that as panic. Some of it is an attempt to
• 12:07
Speaker 1: close the enthusiasm gap without endangering people like a Susan
• 12:10
Speaker 1: Collins who are running in a different lane. Right. Some
• 12:14
Speaker 1: of that is going on. I saw also the anti-doomerism
• 12:17
Speaker 1: poll I saw from Georgia today. I know I've mentioned
• 12:19
Speaker 1: him several times, but obviously I think Asaf is likely
• 12:23
Speaker 1: to win in Georgia. I think he's a skilled politician.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: He also does good constituent services. He's given a lot
• 12:30
Speaker 1: of credit for that, and I think that matters to people. However,
• 12:34
Speaker 1: in polls that show him up by sometimes double digits,
• 12:39
Speaker 1: Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is running for governor as the
• 12:43
Speaker 1: former Democratic 2020 mayor of Atlanta when things fell apart,
• 12:47
Speaker 1: is running against Rick Jackson, a businessman who has run
• 12:51
Speaker 1: an incredible campaign just reminding everybody what Keisha Lance Bottoms
• 12:55
Speaker 1: did in 2020 and how the city fell apart. And
• 12:58
Speaker 1: she's up one or down some in these polls that
• 13:02
Speaker 1: show Ossoff up a lot. Interesting. Interesting. spot for me
• 13:06
Speaker 1: if he if Rick Jackson pulled that off.
• 13:08
Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess we can get into this for next
• 13:10
Speaker 3: week's episode. But, you know, I want to talk about
• 13:13
Speaker 3: kind of what we're looking for on Election Day and
• 13:16
Speaker 3: what other people should be looking for to kind of
• 13:19
Speaker 3: gauge where things are going. I'm feeling good about Florida.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: You know, I get I get asked that a lot.
• 13:26
Speaker 3: And I'm like, no, I think we're good.
• 13:28
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 13:29
Speaker 3: I mean, I say that, but, you know, there's one
• 13:32
Speaker 3: seat that I'm worried about in Florida. That was the
• 13:34
Speaker 3: redistricting seat, Florida 25. It's Scott Singer versus Jared Moskowitz.
• 13:41
Speaker 3: And Moskowitz portrays himself as this moderate.
• 13:43
  Speaker 2: He's not.
• 13:44
  Speaker 3: But, you know, and I don't know, maybe that's a
• 13:47
Speaker 3: really tough one. Moskowitz is the incumbent and it's going
• 13:51
Speaker 3: to be a tough road for Scott. But hope he
• 13:53
  Speaker 3: pulls it out.
• 13:55
Speaker 1: I think the nature of politics as always is that
• 13:57
Speaker 1: you have to keep convincing people. And I think that
• 14:00
Speaker 1: Ron DeSantis has been smart about governing competently, thereby convincing
• 14:06
Speaker 1: people that he's worth a shot and that the red
• 14:11
Speaker 1: vote is worth a shot. And I think he's also
• 14:15
Speaker 1: sort of careful about what kinds of businesses he's opening
• 14:19
Speaker 1: the state up to enthusiastically.
• 14:22
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 14:22
Speaker 1: Right. Instead of like, bring all your libs immediately. Totally. Totally. Yeah.
• 14:27
Speaker 3: He has been careful about that. I hope Byron Donald
• 14:30
Speaker 3: continues that. There is some chatter in Florida about the
• 14:33
Speaker 3: fact that DeSantis is not really doing events for Donald. Now, look,
• 14:38
Speaker 3: does Donald need those events? It doesn't look like it's
• 14:40
Speaker 3: going to be that close.
• 14:42
  Speaker 2: So I don't know.
• 14:43
Speaker 3: But if it is close, I feel like DeSantis is
• 14:47
Speaker 3: risking getting some of that blame.
• 14:48
Speaker 1: Yeah. Well. You know what? If nothing else, I wish
• 14:55
Speaker 1: Florida would teach the rest of the country.
• 14:58
Speaker 3: DeSantis should take that show on the road and offer us.
• 15:02
Speaker 1: Because, you know, we're going to be waiting on Atlanta.
• 15:04
Speaker 1: I mean, excuse me. We're going to be waiting on
• 15:06
Speaker 1: Alaska and California for like three weeks. And Alaska has
• 15:11
Speaker 1: like 2,300 votes to count. They have the ranked choice voting,
• 15:17
Speaker 1: which is going to put a, if it's close, is
• 15:20
Speaker 1: going to put a, Put the brakes on a real
• 15:23
Speaker 1: result probably for a little while. All right.
• 15:27
Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and be right
• 15:29
Speaker 3: back with more on Normally. We are back on Normally
• 15:37
Speaker 3: where the Ilhan Omar immigration story continues to be sort
• 15:41
  Speaker 3: of a question.
• 15:41
Speaker 1: Mark over what she is doing.
• 15:45
Speaker 3: About, whether she has lied about her age, whether she
• 15:49
Speaker 3: has lied about her name. There's also this additional side
• 15:53
Speaker 3: question of whether her dad was actually involved in the
• 15:57
Speaker 3: atrocities that he claimed to be fleeing from in Somalia.
• 16:01
  Speaker 2: So it's a real interesting.
• 16:03
Speaker 3: Tale because it gets to the question of If people
• 16:08
Speaker 3: lie to come to the United States, what should happen?
• 16:11
Speaker 3: Even if they've lived here for a long time, even
• 16:13
Speaker 3: if they got to Congress, what happens then? The New
• 16:17
Speaker 3: York Times obviously quickly jumped to her defense and said
• 16:20
Speaker 3: that you can't be denaturalizing people. And if you denaturalize her,
• 16:24
Speaker 3: anybody could be denaturalized, which I, as somebody who was naturalized, say, well, no,
• 16:29
Speaker 3: not anybody. Not anybody would be the people that lied
• 16:33
Speaker 3: to come in here or broke the law to come
• 16:36
Speaker 3: in here. And, you know, it becomes this thing where
• 16:39
Speaker 3: they mar all immigrants because some people broke the law
• 16:43
Speaker 3: to get here. I feel very strongly against that, obviously.
• 16:47
Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is one of those situations where
• 16:51
Speaker 1: the left is predisposed to just say, oh, this is
• 16:54
Speaker 1: a political attack on her. But the irregularities in her paperwork,
• 16:58
Speaker 1: shall we say, have existed and been documented for quite
• 17:03
Speaker 1: some time. It just is not polite to point out
• 17:07
Speaker 1: that the documents exist.
• 17:09
Speaker 3: We didn't even get into, you know, the question of
• 17:11
Speaker 3: did she marry her biological brother to skirt immigration law,
• 17:16
Speaker 3: which it appears that she did. And there's barely any
• 17:21
Speaker 3: mainstream investigation into it.
• 17:23
Speaker 1: Right. They're just uninterested in that. They're very interested in
• 17:26
Speaker 1: whether Roger Marshall in Kansas paid for some six years ago. Yeah. This...
• 17:34
Speaker 1: Documentation not important. The issue for liberals is that their
• 17:38
Speaker 1: pitch is always, you know, there's going to be some
• 17:42
Speaker 1: broken eggs in this multiculturalism omelet. And as long as
• 17:47
Speaker 1: they're American citizens who are hurt, losing their Social Security
• 17:51
Speaker 1: numbers to ID theft or having been victims of crimes,
• 17:56
Speaker 1: violent and otherwise, that's fine. American broken eggs, fine. However,
• 18:02
Speaker 1: once you drive the numbers up, as Biden did, millions
• 18:06
Speaker 1: and millions, there should be zero issues correcting the problem.
• 18:13
Speaker 1: Because any foreign national who has lied or who has
• 18:16
Speaker 1: done criminal activity should be removed from the country, should
• 18:20
Speaker 1: be treated with the utmost respect. Unlike the people who
• 18:25
Speaker 1: suffered from the crimes that the people who were here committed.
• 18:28
Speaker 2: Right, who cares about them?
• 18:29
Speaker 1: I just, that... ticks me off and I live in
• 18:32
Speaker 1: it every day because I'm in Northern Virginia.
• 18:35
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 18:35
Speaker 3: It's just the whole thing is unfair. And I get
• 18:39
Speaker 3: that it tugs at heartstrings. It tugs at my heartstrings.
• 18:44
Speaker 3: I admit that when I hear these stories about somebody
• 18:46
Speaker 3: who's lived here for 25 years and they get pulled
• 18:49
Speaker 3: over and they get sent back to the country that
• 18:50
Speaker 3: they came from, it's very sad. But You know, you
• 18:54
Speaker 3: never hear the stories, and I had a column on
• 18:56
Speaker 3: this in the New York Post yesterday, you never hear
• 18:59
Speaker 3: the stories of the people who never got in because
• 19:03
Speaker 3: those people cut the line and broke the law and
• 19:06
Speaker 3: came in and didn't care that the law said that
• 19:09
  Speaker 3: they couldn't.
• 19:10
Speaker 2: You never hear the sad.
• 19:11
Speaker 3: Stories of the people who remained in those countries and
• 19:14
Speaker 3: never got the chance to be American because they considered
• 19:17
Speaker 3: following the law of the country they wished to join.
• 19:20
  Speaker 2: So it's just.
• 19:22
Speaker 3: You know, this heart tugging and the sad stories and
• 19:25
Speaker 3: all of that, which we knew were going to come
• 19:27
Speaker 3: if any immigration enforcement actually happened in the Trump administration,
• 19:34
Speaker 3: is just it's meant to make you feel emotional and
• 19:37
Speaker 3: it's kind of cheap.
• 19:39
Speaker 1: Well, and there was a 60 Minutes interview very much
• 19:45
Speaker 1: along those lines about it sort of exemplifies the media context.
• 19:50
Speaker 1: of all of this. A father whose wife and two
• 19:54
Speaker 1: children miss him very much because he was sent back
• 19:57
Speaker 1: because he was here illegally. And they say, OK, well,
• 20:00
  Speaker 1: he's been here 25 years. He's not he hasn't done
• 20:03
Speaker 1: anything illegal aside from be here. But that is a crime.
• 20:06
Speaker 1: And then As with so many of these stories, you
• 20:11
Speaker 1: hear a follow-up. And the follow-up is that he had
• 20:16
Speaker 1: refugee status based on the fact that he would be
• 20:19
Speaker 1: persecuted as a gay man in his country.
• 20:23
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 20:23
Speaker 3: And while they interview his wife and two children, that
• 20:26
Speaker 3: becomes a little suspicious.
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Yes. It just feels relevant to me. There was also
• 20:31
Speaker 1: a DHS spokesperson named James Percival who talked to 60
• 20:37
Speaker 1: Minutes during this. Now, they used fairly clipped versions of
• 20:42
Speaker 1: his answers, but he released them. some of his answers
• 20:47
Speaker 1: in fuller form. And I just want to give you
• 20:49
Speaker 1: a taste of what he's doing. And now liberals will
• 20:52
Speaker 1: watch this and be mad at him because he's making
• 20:55
Speaker 1: these points not in an emotional way. But I actually
• 20:58
Speaker 1: think for news consumption, this is what I want to hear.
• 21:01
Speaker 1: I want to hear a competent person explaining this process
• 21:05
Speaker 1: and pushing back on the really, you know, stacked questions
• 21:13
Speaker 1: about this that have all these presumptions in them that
• 21:15
Speaker 1: are not necessarily true. Here's James Percival pushing back on
• 21:18
Speaker 1: this reporter. What percentage of folks who have been detained
• 21:22
Speaker 1: and deported are violent offenders?
• 21:24
Speaker 4: So I don't have that figure off the top of
• 21:25
Speaker 4: my head. What I can say is there's a very
• 21:27
Speaker 4: specific reason why this population is disproportionately criminal. Literally two reasons.
• 21:31
Speaker 4: Number one, when you have rapists and murderers.
• 21:34
Speaker 1: And can I just clarify, which population are you referring to?
• 21:36
Speaker 4: The third country removal population.
• 21:37
Speaker 1: Third country removal are disproportionately violent.
• 21:39
Speaker 4: They're disproportionately criminals for two reasons. Number one, when countries
• 21:44
Speaker 4: refuse to accept their nationals back, they disproportionately do that
• 21:47
Speaker 4: for violent criminals. People don't really want to take their
• 21:49
Speaker 4: violent criminals back. That's point one. Point two is people
• 21:53
Speaker 4: will sometimes get what's called withholding of removal, that type
• 21:57
Speaker 4: of relief, because they are statutorily ineligible for asylum. And
• 22:00
Speaker 4: what creates that ineligibility in many cases is significant criminal conduct.
• 22:05
Speaker 4: So that's what's so horrible about this problem before the
• 22:08
Speaker 4: Trump administration fixed it, is you had a population of
• 22:11
Speaker 4: people ordered removed by an immigration judge, who is disproportionately criminal,
• 22:16
Speaker 4: who has no right to be in this country, and who,
• 22:18
Speaker 4: as a judge said, should leave, and it was just neglected.
• 22:20
Speaker 4: And these people would go back. You can look at
• 22:22
Speaker 4: the cases I posted on Twitter. A lot of these
• 22:23
Speaker 4: people re-offended and hurt Americans because people were not doing
• 22:27
Speaker 4: their job in enforcing the immigration laws as written. So again,
• 22:31
Speaker 4: I think this is a huge victory by President Trump
• 22:33
Speaker 4: and his administration. You look at falling violent crime rates
• 22:37
  Speaker 4: in this country. I don't think it's a coincidence. I
• 22:39
Speaker 4: think our leadership in getting dangerous criminal illegal aliens out
• 22:42
Speaker 4: of this country who no other administration.
• 22:44
Speaker 1: Could figure out how to remove.
• 22:46
Speaker 4: I think this is a huge victory for the president.
• 22:48
Speaker 1: I want them to do the job well. And I
• 22:50
Speaker 1: feel like a place like where Kristi Noem was in
• 22:53
Speaker 1: charge in Minnesota, that job wasn't done well, partly because
• 22:57
Speaker 1: they were trying to be like so showy. This guy's
• 22:59
Speaker 1: the opposite. He is explaining how this works. He's being
• 23:03
Speaker 1: dispassionate about it and also noting his job is to
• 23:07
Speaker 1: protect Americans. And he just continues to hammer her on
• 23:11
Speaker 1: every point she brings up to him. For instance, she says, well,
• 23:15
Speaker 1: they're not all violent criminals. And he says, well, violent
• 23:17
Speaker 1: crime is a very misleading statistic because it leaves off
• 23:20
Speaker 1: things like, oh, I don't know, child pornography.
• 23:22
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 23:23
Speaker 1: That's a serious crime. And I should like to have
• 23:25
Speaker 1: those people out of the country. We are following the
• 23:28
Speaker 1: law that Congress wrote and they weren't doing it before. Right.
• 23:34
Speaker 1: I think he was informative.
• 23:36
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 23:36
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 23:36
Speaker 3: And that's the whole thing. The enforcement of law is
• 23:40
Speaker 3: the whole ballgame to me. A lot of people who
• 23:42
Speaker 3: comment on these issues basically don't want laws enforced. And
• 23:47
Speaker 3: I think in that case, you have to change the laws.
• 23:50
Speaker 3: You have to run on that. You have to say,
• 23:52
Speaker 3: I want to have people who come in here legally
• 23:55
Speaker 3: remain here. And I don't care that that is going
• 23:58
Speaker 3: to attract millions and millions more because that is what's
• 24:01
Speaker 3: going to happen. I just, I think there needs to
• 24:03
Speaker 3: be some accountability for the fact that these laws exist
• 24:06
Speaker 3: and people just don't want them to be enforced because
• 24:08
Speaker 3: it's sad. Like lots of things are sad. You know,
• 24:12
Speaker 3: when people commit a crime and their family needs them,
• 24:14
Speaker 3: like it's sad when they go to prison, you know,
• 24:17
Speaker 3: if you know them. And it's not very different from
• 24:20
  Speaker 3: what's happening here.
• 24:21
Speaker 1: Well, and I have, uh, I have tried to listen
• 24:26
Speaker 1: frequently to people's critiques because I think it's serious and
• 24:31
Speaker 1: I want people to have due process. So I look
• 24:33
Speaker 1: into each of these things and there's always some hidden
• 24:36
Speaker 1: part of the story. Almost 100% of the time that
• 24:40
Speaker 1: I read into these things. And there are a few exceptions.
• 24:45
Speaker 1: The young lady, Oz Turk at Rutgers, when she was
• 24:49
Speaker 1: picked up by plainclothes officers and And the government didn't
• 24:52
Speaker 1: muster anything in a legal setting other than an op-ed
• 24:56
Speaker 1: she wrote. And I thought, OK, well, that's a foul.
• 24:58
Speaker 1: That's a foul. Right. Some of the Haitian folks probably
• 25:02
Speaker 1: are legitimate refugees, but they were given temporary status. Again,
• 25:07
Speaker 1: there is always a more complicated version of the story
• 25:10
Speaker 1: than the one you get right off the bat. And
• 25:13
Speaker 1: I want to be informed, not taken advantage of. Right. Exactly.
• 25:17
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 25:19
Speaker 3: There's also, separately, a poll out of Gallup showing patriotism numbers.
• 25:25
Speaker 3: And I think the fact that it is so broken
• 25:28
Speaker 3: down by party, when we do have the who should
• 25:31
Speaker 3: be let in immigration conversation, I do think there is
• 25:35
Speaker 3: some argument for people who cannot be patriotic to this country,
• 25:39
Speaker 3: people who are on the far left and want revolution,
• 25:42
Speaker 3: should not be let in. And that shouldn't be that complicated.
• 25:47
Speaker 3: This party had Republicans put patriotism as number one. Democrats
• 25:52
Speaker 3: rank it dead last for most needed values in the country.
• 25:56
Speaker 3: So when we're thinking about, you know, the immigration process,
• 26:00
Speaker 3: I think that value of patriotism needs to be very
• 26:03
Speaker 3: high up there. I'm wildly patriotic to this country. I
• 26:06
Speaker 3: know that every single day that I'm here, I'm so
• 26:08
Speaker 3: lucky and blessed. And it could have gone so differently
• 26:10
Speaker 3: for me. And that's the vibe we should be looking
• 26:13
Speaker 3: for from our immigrants.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: Well, and Gallup has been tracking American values for a
• 26:17
Speaker 1: long time. This is a huge spread between Republican numbers
• 26:22
Speaker 1: and Democratic numbers. And the sad thing about it is
• 26:24
Speaker 1: that the Democratic numbers are reparable. They're irreparable if we
• 26:30
Speaker 1: elect a Democratic president. And that's not how it works.
• 26:33
Speaker 1: That's not how patriotism works. So Republicans, if you look
• 26:36
Speaker 1: over time, stay relatively level in their level of patriotism,
• 26:41
Speaker 1: regardless of the president. They might dip a tiny bit
• 26:45
Speaker 1: in an opposing administration, but they are patriotic overall. Democrats
• 26:50
Speaker 1: are not. They fall off a cliff when the person
• 26:52
Speaker 1: that they like is not in charge. And I would
• 26:56
Speaker 1: just borrow a phrase and say that that is not patriotism.
• 26:58
Speaker 1: country over party. It's the opposite.
• 27:02
Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and be right
• 27:04
Speaker 3: back with more on Normally.
• 27:06
Speaker 1: All right, we are back on Normally with a little
• 27:15
Speaker 1: bit of Hollywood discussion. Jennifer Lawrence debuted a photo shoot
• 27:21
Speaker 1: in a magazine called The Cut, and she looks different.
• 27:27
Speaker 1: And it's caused quite a buzz online. The speculation is
• 27:32
Speaker 1: that she might have had something done to her eyes,
• 27:34
Speaker 1: which were pretty hooded before. Her face does look different.
• 27:38
Speaker 1: It's a Renee Zellweger type of transformation. She had a
• 27:43
Speaker 1: similar one, although I don't think it's that drastic. But
• 27:47
Speaker 1: something signature about her looks very different now.
• 27:50
Speaker 3: Yeah. So the thing is, and it feels mean to
• 27:53
Speaker 3: talk about a woman's face, but it's so the discourse today.
• 27:57
Speaker 3: And I just, I very publicly had an upper bleph,
• 28:01
Speaker 3: which is what people are saying she had. I had,
• 28:05
Speaker 3: I didn't even have hooded eyes. My eyelid was just
• 28:08
Speaker 3: collapsing into my line of vision and I couldn't see.
• 28:11
Speaker 3: But I wrote about it very frankly, where even if
• 28:14
  Speaker 3: I couldn't see, if I didn't hate how much it
• 28:16
Speaker 3: looked so much, I wouldn't have done the surgery. So,
• 28:19
Speaker 3: you know, let's be real. It was the aesthetic part
• 28:22
Speaker 3: that motivated me, but my insurance happily covered it because
• 28:26
Speaker 3: it was a medical problem as well. The thing is,
• 28:29
Speaker 3: I don't think she had great work done, which is
• 28:31
Speaker 3: weird for a Hollywood celebrity, but also it's an odd
• 28:34
Speaker 3: photo shoot where she looks super surprised. you know, is
• 28:38
Speaker 3: that really what she looks like?
• 28:40
Speaker 1: Yes, I think I would be interested in seeing, I
• 28:43
Speaker 1: should say, I love her. I think she's very charming.
• 28:46
Speaker 1: I think she's very funny. She seems down to earth.
• 28:49
Speaker 1: She's done a bunch of movies that I like and
• 28:52
Speaker 1: I enjoy her very much. I would like to see
• 28:55
Speaker 1: her on a red carpet in the future because sometimes
• 28:57
Speaker 1: when you're styled for these as if I'm styled for these.
• 29:03
Speaker 1: When a woman is styled for these very high-end shoots,
• 29:07
Speaker 1: they make them look odd. It's part of the deal.
• 29:11
Speaker 1: And sometimes the makeup can drastically change the shape of
• 29:14
Speaker 1: your face. And so I'm interested to see her in
• 29:17
Speaker 1: the future. But yeah, in general, I like I like
• 29:22
Speaker 1: distinctive looking people to remain distinctive looking. Yeah, right.
• 29:27
Speaker 3: I completely hear that. Everybody's kind of getting the same face.
• 29:30
Speaker 3: And that happened in the 80s and the 90s, too.
• 29:33
Speaker 3: The face right now is just like kind of what
• 29:35
Speaker 3: Jennifer Lawrence got, which is the kind of gaunt.
• 29:38
Speaker 2: A little bit chivalrous. and the wide eyes.
• 29:42
Speaker 3: And, you know, yeah, try to love yourself. But again,
• 29:46
Speaker 3: as somebody who got this done because I didn't like
• 29:48
Speaker 3: how I was looking, I understand the impulse. And also
• 29:52
Speaker 3: a lot of the people commenting are men who have
• 29:54
Speaker 3: no idea what it's like to be a woman in
• 29:57
Speaker 3: public you know where everybody's monitoring your appearance every time
• 30:00
Speaker 3: I go on Fox I get like you know comments
• 30:04
Speaker 3: from random dudes across the country And some of them
• 30:07
Speaker 3: are just like, hey, looking hot. But some of them
• 30:10
Speaker 3: are like, like, you've got too much Botox. And I'm like, haha,
• 30:12
Speaker 3: I don't get any Botox. And that was, you know,
• 30:15
Speaker 3: that was the I look ugly just like this all
• 30:17
  Speaker 3: the time.
• 30:19
Speaker 1: Yeah, I've had you. I've had the pleasure of going
• 30:22
Speaker 1: from 25 to 45 in the public eye. Yeah.
• 30:25
  Speaker 2: And it's tough.
• 30:27
Speaker 1: And yeah, it is a weird thing that you have
• 30:29
Speaker 1: to negotiate and figure out what your lines are and look. uh,
• 30:33
Speaker 1: technology is improving so you can make different choices than
• 30:36
Speaker 1: I could have made. You know, a 45 year old
• 30:38
Speaker 1: could have made 20 years ago. I tend to keep
• 30:41
Speaker 1: it pretty organic, pretty chill. Uh, but you know, that
• 30:45
Speaker 1: may change depending on how much I have. Right. Right.
• 30:49
Speaker 3: I absolutely reserve the right to do all kinds of
• 30:52
Speaker 3: things to my face. And you know, it's more than
• 30:55
Speaker 3: I'm chicken and less than I'm even like, you know,
• 30:58
Speaker 3: I have any moral problem with it. I just, I'm
• 31:01
Speaker 3: afraid like, I have now taken to reading articles about
• 31:05
Speaker 3: all the things that go wrong during facelifts, and that
• 31:07
Speaker 3: really does give you a pause.
• 31:10
Speaker 1: Yes. I mean, any of these things are, you know,
• 31:13
Speaker 1: the bleph is very, it's not super invasive. Right.
• 31:15
Speaker 3: That was super easy. I was like up and at
• 31:17
Speaker 3: them in a few days.
• 31:18
Speaker 1: The facelift is a large surgery, and it's going to
• 31:23
Speaker 1: have pretty serious effects when you're trying to recover. So
• 31:28
Speaker 1: that is something to think about for sure. But yes.
• 31:31
Speaker 1: I think I think people are establishing different lines for
• 31:34
Speaker 1: these things. And but I do sometimes see like a
• 31:39
Speaker 1: it was like like a Marissa Tomei who just looks
• 31:43
Speaker 1: like a hot 50 something woman.
• 31:45
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 31:45
Speaker 1: But then I love that look.
• 31:47
Speaker 3: Yes. But then also Jennifer Lopez still looks amazing. There's
• 31:50
Speaker 3: a lot of like older women who look incredible, but
• 31:53
Speaker 3: it is really just that they're getting better work and
• 31:57
Speaker 3: kind of can't predict who's going to get, you know.
• 32:00
Speaker 3: And some people just don't look natural once they get
• 32:02
  Speaker 3: work done.
• 32:03
Speaker 2: So it's sort of luck also.
• 32:05
Speaker 1: Taking a roll of the dice with your face. I'm
• 32:08
Speaker 1: with you. I'm like a little chicken.
• 32:11
Speaker 3: But as soon as I'm not chicken, I might get
• 32:13
Speaker 3: stuff done. So I'm just putting it out there. Well,
