- 0:11Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
- 0:14You know, in our day, we hear a lot of people
- 0:16talk about spiritual maturity. What a powerful
- 0:19phrase, spiritual maturity. Can I ask you a question?
- 0:22Are you spiritually mature? How do you know?
- 0:25Well, today I'll give you God's fourfold criteria
- 0:27for measuring your spiritual growth and how you
- 0:30can become the person you've always wanted to
- 0:33become. Stay with us. What does it actually take
- 0:37to become the person you long to be? In our last
- 0:40message, Chip Ingram gave us the first half of
- 0:42the answer straight from Ephesians chapter four.
- 0:45Today on Living on the Edge, he picks right up
- 0:48where he left off. I'm Dave Drewy, and we're
- 0:50continuing our series called Free at Last, How
- 0:52to Break Out of a Destructive Lifestyle. If you've
- 0:55missed any part of our study, just go online
- 0:58to livingontheedge .org. Now here's Chip with
- 1:01part two of how to become the person you've always
- 1:04longed to be. If you have your Bible open to
- 1:08Ephesians chapter 4, we pick it up in verse 11,
- 1:11and he gave some as apostles and some as prophets
- 1:13and some as evangelists and some as pastors and
- 1:16teachers for the equipping of the saints for
- 1:19the work of service to the building up of the
- 1:21body of Christ. Until we all attain to the unity
- 1:25of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son
- 1:28of God. to a mature man, to the measure of the
- 1:31stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
- 1:34Verse 14, as a result, in other words, the impact
- 1:37is we're no longer to be children tossed here
- 1:41and there by every wind of doctrine, by trickery
- 1:44of men, by craftiness and deceitful scheming.
- 1:46But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow
- 1:50up into all aspects into him who is the head,
- 1:52even Christ, from whom the whole body, speaking
- 1:55of the church, being fitted and held together,
- 1:58by what every joint supplies according to the
- 2:01proper working of each individual part that causes
- 2:04the growth of the body for the building up of
- 2:06itself in love. There's three principles and
- 2:09a proof that flow out of this passage. Principle
- 2:11number one tells us what leaders are to do. Leaders
- 2:15are gifted to equip God's people for service.
- 2:19It's what leaders do. And then he gives four
- 2:22examples of leaders in the early church. And
- 2:24you'll notice he literally gives the foundation.
- 2:26He says, first there's apostles. The word apostle
- 2:29literally means one who is sent with a commission.
- 2:32Jesus had many disciples, but he chose 12 apostles.
- 2:36The qualifications for being an apostle is you
- 2:39had to be actually with the risen Christ from
- 2:43his baptism on through the rest of his ministry.
- 2:46Now, there's the office of apostle. You have
- 2:48these 12. And then you have the function of apostle.
- 2:52These are people that... aren't original apostles
- 2:55because there's no one living today that actually,
- 2:57right, was back when Jesus was resurrected. But
- 3:00this function of starting new things, the idea
- 3:03of missionaries, people who start ministries,
- 3:05there's a function of apostleship. And then after
- 3:08he had the apostles, there's the prophets. And
- 3:10the early church didn't have a New Testament.
- 3:12And so they got revelation from God. Prophecy
- 3:15primarily is the foretelling of God's truth.
- 3:18Then you have evangelists. These are people gifted.
- 3:21with an extraordinary gift and a winsomeness
- 3:23that lead lost people into an understanding of
- 3:26a saving knowledge of Christ. And when you're
- 3:28around them, they motivate the rest of us to
- 3:30do the work of an evangelist, to really care
- 3:32about people outside of Christ. And then once
- 3:35they're sent, and once there's truth, and once
- 3:37people come to Christ, then pastor teachers,
- 3:40the word pastor literally just means a shepherd.
- 3:43It's someone who comes along someone and says,
- 3:46I want to help you through the valleys and the
- 3:47ups and the downs and the struggles. And I'm
- 3:50going to teach you the truth so that you understand
- 3:51this is how God wants your marriage to work.
- 3:54This is what God says in terms of living a single
- 3:57life. This is how his instruction about your
- 4:00finances, your dreams, or ambition. Here's how
- 4:03you deal with these kind of temptations. And
- 4:06the goal of apostles and prophets and evangelists
- 4:09and pastors and teachers is to equip God's people
- 4:12for the work of service. Literally, we become
- 4:17the body of Christ. Jesus, when he was on the
- 4:20earth, would walk around and if someone needed
- 4:22a cup of cold water, with his hands, he would
- 4:24give them a cup of cold water. Or if they needed
- 4:26food, he would break some bread and pray over
- 4:28it and give them food. But today, Jesus' body
- 4:31is us. But what you gotta understand is the role
- 4:34of leaders are to equip. Notice the second principle.
- 4:38Second principles are every member is a minister.
- 4:42You are the hope of your neighborhood, the hope
- 4:45of your family, the hope of where you work. You
- 4:48are a full -time minister of the gospel. Leaders'
- 4:52job is to help equip you personally, spiritually,
- 4:55relationally, so you can be an effective minister
- 4:58in your home and at your school and your work,
- 5:00in your neighborhood. And I remember the story.
- 5:05I always liked the... The old westerns, we still
- 5:08kind of watch them. And I always love the part
- 5:10on the old, you know, westerns where the bank's
- 5:13been robbed. What are you going to do? And then
- 5:15the marshal comes up. All right, fellas, we're
- 5:17going to form a posse. And then what's he do?
- 5:22All right, marshal dealing. I'm going to deputize
- 5:26all you people. And then what do they do? They
- 5:29all get on their horses and they have their guns.
- 5:31They now have the power to go do exactly what
- 5:33the sheriff does. Can I tell you, when you came
- 5:37to Christ, God gave gifted leaders to equip you.
- 5:41You're deputized. You can counsel. You can lead
- 5:45people to Christ. You can share your faith. You
- 5:48can open your home. You have a unique DNA in
- 5:51terms of relationships, spiritual gifts, backgrounds,
- 5:54opportunities, and often your deepest hurts.
- 5:57Often the things that you have been through that
- 5:59you feel like, oh. will be the very things that
- 6:02will help the people in this valley understand
- 6:05who Christ is. And I want you to know you've
- 6:08been deputized. I remember a really interesting
- 6:12experience because we talk about life change
- 6:15and sometimes when we talk about authentic community,
- 6:17if you're not careful, you can get authentic
- 6:20community to mean, I'm in a great small group.
- 6:23I'm privately reading the Bible. We share deeply.
- 6:27It's a great time together. We are having these
- 6:30wonderful relationships. And I guess this is
- 6:32authentic community. No, no, no, no. That's part
- 6:34of authentic community. See, authentic community
- 6:37isn't just about what you get or deep relationships
- 6:40or accountability. Authentic community has to
- 6:43do with being fitted in the right spot so that
- 6:46those kind of relationships are on mission to
- 6:48fulfill what Jesus said when he said, go therefore
- 6:51and make disciples. And if you're not involved
- 6:54in not just receiving and loving and caring and
- 6:57the word, but serving out of the supernatural
- 7:00deposit of gifts, your life doesn't change and
- 7:03you don't experience his power. I had a weird
- 7:07experience with this. I didn't grow up as a Christian
- 7:10and I came to Christ and then I coached. And
- 7:13when I coached, I did Bible studies with my players.
- 7:15And then after Teresa and I got married, we both
- 7:17were in a college ministry. She was working and
- 7:21I was coaching and working. And then like on
- 7:23Tuesday and Thursday morning, I meet with a group
- 7:25of guys and she met one evening with a group
- 7:27of gals that she was discipling. And then once
- 7:29a week, we'd have all these people over and our
- 7:31lives were filled with caring and loving and
- 7:35discipling. And I mean, it was very fulfilling.
- 7:37In fact, that's why I actually thought, I think
- 7:40God wants me, Chip, regular ordinary person to
- 7:43actually be a pastor. And I thought, you gotta
- 7:46be kidding God. Certainly you have to be smarter
- 7:48than me. And a lot more holy than me. And God
- 7:52said, no, actually, you'll do. So I said, okay.
- 7:56And so we go to seminary. And, you know, in West
- 7:59Virginia, like a huge church is 200 people. I
- 8:02mean, there's only a million people in the whole
- 8:04state. A mega, mega church is like 300 people.
- 8:07And we were in a church of about 200 people.
- 8:10And when we get to Dallas and it was like, oh
- 8:11my lands. And people invited us. So we ended
- 8:14up at this church of about 2 ,500 people and
- 8:16the pastor was awesome and had all these seminary
- 8:18professors teaching Sunday school classes. I
- 8:21went to a Sunday school class on the Psalms and
- 8:24the editor of the NIV Bible, when it was being
- 8:27developed, he taught the class. And then you've
- 8:29got, you know, this guy who wrote seven books.
- 8:31And so, I mean, it was like, I mean, it was like
- 8:34going to a conference every weekend. You go to
- 8:36a class over here and amazing things for your
- 8:38kids. And so it was like, wow, wow, week one,
- 8:41week two, week three, week four, week five, week
- 8:42six, week seven. And you know, I'm getting all
- 8:44this stuff at seminary and we're trying to figure
- 8:46out life. And I'll never forget, had an interesting
- 8:49experience because I mean, great, great, great
- 8:52teaching. And I can still remember getting right
- 8:54to the door of where you went in this big church.
- 8:57And I turned to my wife and I said, do you feel
- 8:59like going to church today? And please don't
- 9:02make too heavy application on this. She said,
- 9:06no. I said, me neither. You want to go to Wendy's?
- 9:08She goes, sure. Sorry. So we did. And so, you
- 9:14know, they're doing this great stuff with our
- 9:15kids, so we go to Wendy's. And we get to Wendy's,
- 9:17and I said, honey, something's wrong. I mean,
- 9:20I've never been to church with such good teaching.
- 9:22I've never been to church with such great programs.
- 9:25But, man, I just feel, I think that was the word
- 9:28I used. And she said, I feel exactly the same
- 9:32way. I said, well, what could be wrong? We're
- 9:34here preparing for the ministry, And she said,
- 9:38well, why did we come? And we began to talk about
- 9:41what a normal week was like in West Virginia.
- 9:44And you know what I realized? I realized that
- 9:47all I was doing was eating spiritually, but there
- 9:50was no exercise. The grace of God wasn't flowing
- 9:53through me to help other people. And so, I mean,
- 9:56I was in a small group and I was getting all
- 9:58this great teaching. Becoming the person you
- 10:02long to become. cannot happen by being simply
- 10:07a spectator and a receiver of great spiritual
- 10:09food in a great spiritual environment. It's by
- 10:12that which every joint supplies according to
- 10:14the proper working of each individual part. And
- 10:18I remember riding on a napkin. I said, okay,
- 10:20we got to fix this. So, you know, I'm working
- 10:23full time. I'm going to school full time. I don't
- 10:25have any time, but I'm thinking if my spiritual
- 10:27life is, I mean, I'm doing a dive. There's no
- 10:30power. There's no energy. There's no life. And
- 10:33so I got an appointment with the pastor and we
- 10:36sat down at this booth in this little restaurant
- 10:38and on a three by five card I had my name, my
- 10:41phone number, what I thought my spiritual gifts
- 10:43were, ministry experience I've had in college
- 10:45ministries, and then I pretended I had to go
- 10:47to the bathroom. Excuse me, I can go to the bathroom,
- 10:49I'll be right back. And I handed him the card.
- 10:52And on the back of it said, you tell me any place
- 10:55in this church you need help, I'm in. And so
- 10:57I went to the bathroom. Two and a half minutes.
- 11:00Maybe he needs three, you know. I want to make
- 11:02sure he reads the card well. And I came back
- 11:04and we sat down and Don says, well, hey, it seems
- 11:08like you've had some ministry experience. I said,
- 11:10you can check me out however you want. I got
- 11:12to get back in the game. We ended up doing the
- 11:14high school ministry. Six or eight months later,
- 11:16we ended up doing the college ministry. And life,
- 11:19leaders are gifted to equip. Every member is
- 11:26a minister. And if you aren't ministering, you
- 11:30know those little things where I said, can you
- 11:32imagine what it would be like to forgive someone
- 11:34so deeply that your first reaction would be you
- 11:38rejoice? That's supernatural. That doesn't happen
- 11:42by reading your Bible alone and trying real hard
- 11:45to, you know, change some habits. We'll continue
- 11:50in a moment here on Living on the Edge with Chip
- 11:52Ingram. While you're with us, if you've never
- 11:55checked out the Living on the Edge with Chip
- 11:57Ingram YouTube channel, you're missing a whole
- 11:59other side of this ministry. It's full of teaching
- 12:02series you won't see anywhere else. Things like
- 12:05BIO, three essential practices to becoming like
- 12:09Jesus, and the I Choose Joy series, just to name
- 12:13a few. It's a great way to go deeper with Chip's
- 12:15teaching or to send a friend something to watch.
- 12:18Just search Living on the Edge. with Chip Ingram
- 12:21on YouTube and take a look around. Well, now
- 12:25here's Chip. See, there is a design. There is
- 12:29a spiritual cocoon. There is a master creator.
- 12:34And he says the way it works is when leaders
- 12:37equip and every member is a minister, then amazing
- 12:43things happen. And in verse 13, it's that ministries
- 12:47are developed to help every believer. To live
- 12:49every day in every way just as Jesus would live
- 12:53if he were living out his life in their physical
- 12:55body. All I want you to know is that I now have
- 12:59the ability to say, this is a new one. I can
- 13:03say in even more words what Paul was saying in
- 13:06verse 13. And he uses a lot of words. By that,
- 13:10notice what he says. He talks about until you
- 13:13become a mature man to the fullness of the stature.
- 13:19to the body of Christ. And what I want you to
- 13:22know is that In God's design, when leaders equip
- 13:24instead of do all the ministry and rob people
- 13:26of it, when every member realizes, you know something?
- 13:29Okay, I'm in school or I'm a stay -at -home mom
- 13:32or I'm working in this company, but I am his
- 13:35representative. I am the living Christ inside
- 13:39of me. The hope for this whole department may
- 13:42be me. I may be the only Christian. How I live,
- 13:45how I talk, how I love, when and how I communicate
- 13:48is the hope of the world. I'm a minister. I don't
- 13:51have a little collar, but I'm a minister. And
- 13:54then what happens is when this occurs, ministries,
- 13:58in other words, outreaches to people are developed
- 14:00so that every single believer lives every day
- 14:05in every way. So it's not like it starts at work,
- 14:07but it's at home. It's with your roommate. It's
- 14:10in your neighborhood. It's realizing, you know,
- 14:14just step outside your door or your apartment
- 14:16and look around and realize nine out of 10 of
- 14:19most all the people in this part of the country
- 14:21where I live do not have a personal relationship
- 14:24with God. And there is great need and there's
- 14:28a God who loves them. And then after they die,
- 14:30because I spent yesterday with a guy that they
- 14:32told had about six or nine months to live. And
- 14:34when you look in the eyes of very powerful people
- 14:36with all kind of background and they know they
- 14:38have six or nine months to live, they act very
- 14:40differently. He said, you know, when it's theory,
- 14:44you know you die, but it gets real different
- 14:45when it's up close. And he was sitting across
- 14:48his bed, and I asked him, I was amazed at how
- 14:52bold I was. So, what are they telling you? Less
- 14:55than a year. What are you most afraid of? You
- 15:00know why I was so bold? He's going to die. He's
- 15:05going to die. And right now, all indications
- 15:08are that he's going to die apart from Christ.
- 15:10I said, I don't know all about your past life
- 15:12and how many regrets you might have, but you
- 15:15don't want to have eternal regrets. I want you
- 15:17to know there's a Jesus, there's a God who cares,
- 15:19and he's prepared a place for you if you'll receive
- 15:22his gift. And you know, he looked at me, and
- 15:26you know what hit me this morning? Everyone I
- 15:28meet's going to die. Is this true or not? You
- 15:32know your neighbors? I got news for you. flash.
- 15:35They're going to die. You know your co -workers?
- 15:37They're going to die. You know your family? They're
- 15:40going to die. You know what makes you bold? When
- 15:42you get it. And we stop worrying about so much
- 15:46how people think of us and we start realizing
- 15:47I have a supernatural endowment and power inside
- 15:51of me. The living God lives inside of me and
- 15:54he cares about them and the only issue is me
- 15:56getting over me. But the only way I get over
- 15:59me is when I get equipped by leaders. And the
- 16:01only way I learn to minister is when I take baby
- 16:03steps and start doing it. And you know, when
- 16:05you start doing it, guess what? You fail a lot.
- 16:06Okay. You know, when I see Jesus with the disciples,
- 16:09you know what I notice? They fail a lot. You
- 16:12find me in the gospels where he yells at him
- 16:14for failing. I can't find it. The only time he
- 16:18gets upset is, where's your faith? You got to
- 16:21be kidding me. You're not even trying. Oh, you
- 16:24have little faith. So, leaders equip us. We are
- 16:31all the ministers. And then ministries are birthed.
- 16:35This is how the church works. Church isn't coming
- 16:38and listening and spectating, saying the music
- 16:41was okay, the guy kept me awake most of the time,
- 16:43now I'm going to go out and try and be a nice
- 16:45person. That's not it. It's you getting equipped.
- 16:51It's you being a full -time minister. It's you
- 16:54watching ministries grow and develop according
- 16:56to your hearts and your passions and you begin
- 16:58to serve. And as you do, the grace of God comes
- 17:00inside of you and he uses you and you have this
- 17:04amazing experience where people's eternities
- 17:07and families and marriages and kids are completely
- 17:09transformed because of an ordinary piece of clay.
- 17:14like you, in whom the living spirit of God lives
- 17:18and he gifts you and trains you and you take
- 17:21baby steps of faith and you fail and you struggle
- 17:24and have ups and downs, but in the midst of all
- 17:26your weakness and hurt, the power of God is displayed.
- 17:31See, that's what happened in the early church.
- 17:33I mean, they didn't even have technology and
- 17:36they multiplied. In fact, a young man, I was...
- 17:40meeting with a young pastor doing a little mentoring.
- 17:43He's planted a church. And so they grew to about
- 17:46300 people. And he said, you know, now this group
- 17:48is kind of feeling like it's a younger church
- 17:50and a lot of college age. And he said, I'm watching.
- 17:53Now the church is kind of focused on, hey, we
- 17:55really like this and we're kind of different.
- 17:57It's kind of working for us. He said, my biggest
- 17:59challenge now is to help us remember we planted
- 18:01this church to reach another generation. He said,
- 18:04here's my goal for this year. We have 300 people.
- 18:06My goal is that every single person will lead
- 18:10just one person to Christ. I mean, we're going
- 18:12to train them. We're going to help them. We're
- 18:13going to love them. But just every person, 300
- 18:15people, this time next year, we're going to pray
- 18:17and dream and ask God that these 300 people would
- 18:21lead another 300 people to Christ. And I thought,
- 18:24wow, that's a great goal. And how are you going
- 18:25to go about that? And he laid it out for me.
- 18:28And you know sometimes when you're mentoring
- 18:29or you're supposed to be helping people, you
- 18:31realize when you're done, I think this is helping
- 18:33me way more than him. Leaders are the equippers.
- 18:38Ministries will grow and develop. Special ministries
- 18:43to special age groups and special needs and special
- 18:45backgrounds out of your hurts and your pains
- 18:47and your gifts and your passions. And then what
- 18:50you'll see is this is what happens. You'll find
- 18:53that there'll be doctrinal stability. You'll
- 18:55find people because they're in the word. You
- 18:57know what? They can spot a false teacher. As
- 18:59a result, we're no longer children, right? Tossed
- 19:01here and there by every wind of doctrine. As
- 19:03a result, what you find is people have authentic
- 19:05relationships. You do ministry with people and
- 19:07you fail and you struggle and you pray together
- 19:08pretty soon. You're tight. Not just in a small
- 19:10group, but you're tight. And they're loved. And
- 19:14there's full participation. It's by that which
- 19:17every joint supply. We need you. Here's the deal.
- 19:20This isn't like... I hear some people like, well,
- 19:23I don't need to go to church because, you know,
- 19:25there's nature and I've got a Bible and there's
- 19:26God and I don't need the church. Okay. Granted.
- 19:29We need you. Okay. I mean, you know, it's like
- 19:33saying, it's like the tight end saying, I don't
- 19:35need you. I can toss the ball to myself. And
- 19:37I got news for you. There's certain patterns
- 19:39and plays we can't run without a tight end. And
- 19:41we need both guards and we need a quarterback
- 19:43and we need a coach and we need a manager. We
- 19:45need everybody. The church can't be the church.
- 19:48Full participation. And when that happens, that's
- 19:53when those imaginary things that I described,
- 19:55they're not imaginary. They're not imaginary.
- 20:01Are you ready? I know this will come as a shock.
- 20:03You're gonna die. And there's gonna be people
- 20:07at your house or near your house eating those
- 20:11little munchy little sandwiches. And they're
- 20:14gonna talk about you. And I don't know about
- 20:16you, but... I want them to say, by the grace
- 20:20of God, you know what? He was one of the most
- 20:24loving people I ever met. Oh man, I mean, had
- 20:27his idiosyncrasies and they laugh about those.
- 20:30But full of integrity. Christ -like. Cared about
- 20:35people. Generous. Loving. Authentic. That's not
- 20:43going to happen by trying hard. and coming and
- 20:46sitting in this building to be a good person.
- 20:50That's gonna happen when you understand who you
- 20:52are in Christ, when you understand the power
- 20:55is in Christ's resurrection for you and with
- 20:58you to walk in newness of life, and when you
- 21:01allow leaders to equip you, and when you minister,
- 21:04and ministries are birthed along your gifts and
- 21:07passions, and you know the word, and you speak
- 21:12the truth in love, and you are connected. and
- 21:16God produces it. You're listening to Living on
- 21:21the Edge with Chip Ingram and a message titled

- 22:55Well, now back to Chip for a closing word. As
- 22:58we close today's program, I'd love to have just
- 23:00a very informal conversation with you. So whatever
- 23:03you're doing, kind of lean back for just a minute.
- 23:05And let me just ask you a couple questions that
- 23:07I think may have come to your mind. And if they
- 23:10didn't, if I could be so bold, I think God would
- 23:13want them to come to your mind. And the first
- 23:15question would be, are you using your spiritual
- 23:18gift? And are you using it in your local church?
- 23:22Well, maybe the question we ought to back up
- 23:24before that one is, do you know what your spiritual
- 23:26gift is? And here's my experience. I think most
- 23:30of us as Christians, you know, you read through
- 23:32the New Testament or you hear about spiritual
- 23:34gifts and maybe some people are... kind of very
- 23:38dramatic about some of the gifts. And so I find
- 23:41a lot of Christians are like, I don't even want
- 23:43to go there. The last time I talked about spiritual
- 23:45gifts, I got in an argument. And for others,
- 23:47it's like, yeah, I think I have some and I've
- 23:50read some and I was in a Bible study once and
- 23:52someone told me it's probably either leadership
- 23:54or mercy or, you know, maybe it's teaching. But
- 23:58and, you know, they give you like a list of seven
- 24:00or eight and you just realize in your heart of
- 24:03hearts, you don't have a clue. Here's the thing.
- 24:06God wants you to know your primary spiritual
- 24:09gift. He wants you to use it. And when you use
- 24:12it, supernatural things happen in the lives of
- 24:15other people and joy happens inside of you because
- 24:19he's deposited this gift in you to remind you
- 24:22of Christ's work and Christ's victory, but also
- 24:25to give you literally a supernatural ability
- 24:28to love and help other people. Coming up in our
- 24:33next lesson, Chip Ingram uses a surprising picture
- 24:35from nature to explain exactly what happens when
- 24:38someone becomes a new creation in Christ. Discover
- 24:42why an unchanged life is actually incompatible
- 24:45with real faith and what it means to genuinely
- 24:48become someone new. Next time on Living on the
- 24:51Edge. Today's program is produced and sponsored
- 24:57by Living on the Edge.
