Latest / Scripture Central / Revelation 1-5: New Testament with Lynne Wilson (Come, Follow Me)
Transcript
- 0:00Shalom, Welcome back to Scripture Central, the former
- 0:03Book of Mormon Central. We're here and come follow me
- 0:06today to talk about the Book of Revelation.
- 0:08I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson and I love this book.
- 0:13It is a sign of God's covenant. We see how faithful Jesus is as
- 0:18not only our Savior and our Redeemer, but the King of Kings
- 0:22and the Lord of Lords. This book describes the history
- 0:25of the world and it is so important to our day and age.
- 0:29And one reason that I feel so strongly about it is because the
- 0:32Lord revealed the keys to how to unlock this treasure.
- 0:36It's usually referred to as the Apocalypse and it's and it's a
- 0:39part of apocalyptic literature and it's hard to understand, but
- 0:43we have so many keys to understand it.
- 0:46And the first and foremost is when Joseph Smith was going
- 0:49through the Bible, his translation.
- 0:51He comes to these chapters and he asks questions and the Lord
- 0:55gives him answers. And they're recorded in Section
- 0:5777 of the Doctrine and Covenants.
- 0:59And that is our greatest key to understand it.
- 1:02We also have the understanding, the ancient numerology and the
- 1:05symbolism, the Old Testament patterns, the plan of salvation,
- 1:10the temple initiated. Especially when we realized that
- 1:13the early Christians had been washed and anointed similar to
- 1:17the priests of the Aaronic priesthood in the Old Testament.
- 1:20We hear descriptions in some of the 40 day literature about the
- 1:25Christians who are going through the same things.
- 1:26We know the Christians are having bathrooms for the dead
- 1:29and washings and anointings and prayer circles.
- 1:32And so I feel like those who are temple initiated can understand
- 1:36this text better as well. The last thing I want to mention
- 1:40is the spirit of revelation. You have to pray.
- 1:43We have to have the Lord's help on this study.
- 1:45I think the best guide to any scripture study is praying
- 1:48first. But in this book you're praying
- 1:51for understanding as well. I feel pretty strongly that when
- 1:54we look at numbers and what is important in numbers is not what
- 1:58fits into our culture, because right now number six is a
- 2:01perfect number in math. But in the ancient world, #7
- 2:05meant whole and complete, especially in the Judaic or the
- 2:08Israelite community because that was the number chosen for the
- 2:11periods of time to divide the creation.
- 2:13And so as we look at the numbers, 7 is John's favorite
- 2:18number. Remember back in his gospel he
- 2:20had 7 sermons and seven miracles and the Book of Revelation is
- 2:24saturated with sevens. He has 12.
- 2:27In the creation we have 12 moons to every year.
- 2:30And then when the children of Israel come out of Egypt, we
- 2:33have the 12 tribes as from the time of Jacob.
- 2:37And then we have, of course, at the time of the New Testament,
- 2:40the 12 apostles. So 12 is often God's order.
- 2:44And you see that a lot here. Anytime you square a number,
- 2:47you're perfecting it. So 12, ^2, 144, the number seven
- 2:53is whole and complete and you cut it in half and you get 3
- 2:551/2. And so 3 1/2 becomes a very
- 2:57important number as well. There's others that we'll talk
- 3:00about as we go along. The entire Book of Revelation is
- 3:04also put together as a chiastic structure.
- 3:07Remember, that's the parallel poetry of ideas, where the first
- 3:12idea is the last idea and the second idea is the second to
- 3:16last. And as you look, as a bird's eye
- 3:18view across the whole 22 chapters of the Book of
- 3:21Revelation, you find this beautiful chiastic structure,
- 3:24the warnings and the promises of Christ second coming in
- 3:27judgement, and then the inaugural vision of Christ.
- 3:31The scrolls with the seven seals.
- 3:33And there we have the beautiful center part, which is the last
- 3:36days. It's the challenging
- 3:37destructions. And then when we come out, we
- 3:40see again the scrolls with 7 seals another vision of our
- 3:44Savior. And then it ends with the
- 3:46warnings and the promises of Christ second coming in judgment
- 3:49again. I also made a chart to describe
- 3:53how John has divided up these periods of history, and it's
- 3:57fascinating to me to see the number of verses here.
- 4:00He has 201 verses, more than 10 times the number of verses on
- 4:04almost any other subject on our day and age after the opening of
- 4:09the second seal, the great calamities before the Savior's
- 4:13return. That is where the focus of this
- 4:15book is. So you can either look at this
- 4:17chart here or my handout would be applied.
- 4:20At the beginning. We've got a beautiful chapter
- 4:22one, four and five where there's about 36 verses on the throne,
- 4:26the throne of God. And then we've got 51 verses
- 4:30over the next two chapters, chapters 2 and three, that
- 4:32describes the seven churches of Asia and the council that the
- 4:35Lord gives them. As far as a historical time
- 4:38reference goes, in the scriptures we don't have this.
- 4:41But in the historical writings that date back to the second and
- 4:45third centuries after the Lord's death, we can read that John was
- 4:51put in a prison on the Isle of Patmos.
- 4:54And we can also read that Domitian, the Caesar at the
- 4:57time, was very antagonistic and furious.
- 5:01In fact he tried to kill John numerous times and in the
- 5:04records that are left it says he even dipped him in a hot boiling
- 5:08oil and he did not die and that's why he puts him on this
- 5:13prison island. And there were other prisoners
- 5:15there too. According to the records in the
- 5:18in the Roman Empire that this was an island where they were
- 5:21left to hopefully die. But that is not what happens to
- 5:25John. He of course has this very
- 5:28significant vision and it's similar to other prophets
- 5:30visions when we read in part. But he has the responsibility,
- 5:35he has the call from God to write the whole thing out.
- 5:38If you talk to a biblical scholar or you look online or
- 5:41read some commentaries, there's a lot of debate as to who is the
- 5:45author. But in modern Revelation, we are
- 5:47told that the author is John, that it is the beloved disciple
- 5:53who wrote the Gospel of John and the Epistles of John, And
- 5:56whether or not he had assistants or scribes or people working
- 6:00with him, I don't know. But we believe that this vision
- 6:04was given to John the Revelator, who was also John the Beloved.
- 6:10But because he had promised the Lord that he would serve him not
- 6:13only the days of his life but until the Lord comes again, he
- 6:17has an extended time period on earth, and he has an extended
- 6:21vision until the timing of the end of the Celestialized Earth.
- 6:27Chapter one, verse 4. John also identifies himself as
- 6:31being on the island of Patmos. And I mentioned a little bit
- 6:34earlier that this is apocalyptic literature and they describe
- 6:38these horrific things that are going to happen at the end of
- 6:40time. But John's writing is so much
- 6:44more than that. It is filled with divine visions
- 6:48and information, and we can see God's hand through history.
- 6:52It's one thing to read a history book to see the history of the
- 6:54world, but when God tells the story, it's focused on the most
- 6:59important thing in the history, which is the coming of our
- 7:02Savior of Jesus of Nazareth's death and resurrection.
- 7:07Before we jump into the text, I'd like to go through the
- 7:10organization of our five chapters that we have for come
- 7:13Follow me this week. According to Joseph Smith's
- 7:16Answers from God, the whole book is a chronological history of
- 7:20the earth, with four little interludes and an introduction
- 7:25or a beginning message to these seven churches.
- 7:28So we open up with a vision of Christ, and then we have two
- 7:31chapters on the messages to the churches, and each of those
- 7:35messages have four parts. There's a description of Christ,
- 7:39a condemnation of the different churches, a challenge given to
- 7:43them, and a promise. And whether you're in the
- 7:47Ephesus branch or the Sardis branch, wherever you're going to
- 7:50get each one of those things, an identification of Christ, a
- 7:52condemnation, a challenge and a promise.
- 7:54And it repeats and repeats. Then beautiful chapters four and
- 7:57five are a throne Theophany, a study of the throne of God, and
- 8:02it's a temple vision with heavenly Father and Christ
- 8:05accepting his call from the Father.
- 8:07We are introduced to 24 elders and four beasts, and in the King
- 8:11James they're called beasts. I prefer other translations that
- 8:13refer to them as living beings. These are people who are serving
- 8:17God or animals who are serving God.
- 8:19In fact, the four beasts are a lion, an eagle, a man or an
- 8:24Angel, sometimes an ox. And then of course there's the
- 8:27Lamb of God on the throne. And these symbols, whether it's
- 8:31the double edged sword or a star or the sun, have got to be
- 8:35looked at in perspective of the symbols of that ancient world,
- 8:40the symbols that the Lord tells us about and the symbols that
- 8:43fall into place with the plan of salvation.
- 8:45So we'll talk more about them when we get there.
- 8:47Revelation chapter one, verse one has some significant Joseph
- 8:50Smith translation changes the Revelation of John, a servant of
- 8:55God. I love that.
- 8:56I'm so grateful we have that edition.
- 8:59As disciples of Jesus Christ we are to serve Him.
- 9:02We don't want to ever confuse who is the master and who is the
- 9:06servant. John the Beloved was serving his
- 9:09God. It was given unto him of Jesus
- 9:11Christ to show unto his servants things which must shortly come
- 9:16to pass. Now if you ask me, the
- 9:20definition of shortly there is exaggerated since it's already
- 9:23been well over 2000 years before some of these things come to
- 9:27pass. So I just have to pause and say
- 9:30the timing of the Lord is very different on COLOB than it is on
- 9:35the planet Earth. But it's also very true that
- 9:39every person here will meet their maker in the near future,
- 9:44that our life is but a passing a quick moment, and that these
- 9:48things will come to us as we go from one estate to the next as
- 9:52well. First one in the KJV said that
- 9:55he sent and signified by his Angel unto his servant John.
- 9:59Now this is interesting because the Angel is the one who's
- 10:04acting like a guide through much of the vision, but towards the
- 10:07end the Saviour comes and talks to him and is his guide.
- 10:11So we get both in the vision. First three says blessed are
- 10:15they who read and they who hear and understand and keep these
- 10:21things which are written. I love the fact that our Savior
- 10:26is sharing this information with us so that we can understand it.
- 10:31We can learn it in before the Joseph Smith translation, before
- 10:34section 77, before the temple. I think this would have been
- 10:37excruciatingly difficult to understand.
- 10:39And that's why the commentaries come up with ideas like it's
- 10:42talking about Nero. It's talking about this.
- 10:44It's talking about that rather than what we're taught by the
- 10:48Lord. So we are very blessed, but we
- 10:51need to hear it and understand it.
- 10:52It's written for our day. Joseph says if the Lord has
- 10:55given you the keys to understand something, he will hold you
- 10:58responsible to know it. And that's the way I feel about
- 11:01the Book of Revelation, John, to the seven churches in the
- 11:05province of Asia. Now that's modern day Turkey.
- 11:07So it's we're on the western border of modern day Turkey.
- 11:10And he begins with the standard phrase grace and peace to you
- 11:15from him who is who was who is to come from the seven spirits
- 11:21before his throne. So he's already had one vision
- 11:23before he started writing this letter and he knows that he is
- 11:27to write it from the spirits that are sitting before the God.
- 11:30But I'm fascinated with the fact that Paul also served in Ephesus
- 11:34for three years. Do you remember?
- 11:35Back in the book of Acts, they describe his three Apostolic
- 11:40missions to the Gentiles and he was there for three years in
- 11:44Ephesus. But it doesn't appear that the
- 11:46two overlapped. But according to the history of
- 11:50this area, John came and lived in Ephesus, and he brought with
- 11:53him the Lord's mother, Mary. And John was able to build up
- 11:59the church in this area after Paul had started.
- 12:02And these seven churches are part of his charge and he is now
- 12:07going to include them in his congregation for this first five
- 12:11reads. And from Jesus Christ, who is
- 12:13the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead and
- 12:17the Prince of kings of the earth?
- 12:19You know, it's one of my favorite things to do when I'm
- 12:21studying the Book of Revelation is to keep a record of the names
- 12:25of our Savior. I think John really knew him.
- 12:29If he is the one who's writing is the beloved apostle like we
- 12:33believe, then he had a very close relationship and his
- 12:37vocabulary helps us understand who the Savior is.
- 12:41This is from the BLB translation to finish up verse 5.
- 12:45It's a very good literal translation to the one loving us
- 12:50and releasing us from our sins through His blood.
- 12:53So he addresses it also to our Savior, to the one who is our
- 12:56mediator, our Redeemer, the one who has suffered for our sins.
- 13:01I'm also writing. And then in verse six it reads
- 13:04He had to made us kings and priests unto God His Father.
- 13:09Now the Joseph Smith translation editions are significant and
- 13:12I've got them all written out in my hand out.
- 13:14If you'd like to follow along, that should be attached to this
- 13:16video or they're on scripture central in the archives.
- 13:20Chapter one, verse seven in the NIV reads, Look, he's coming
- 13:24with the clouds and every eye shall see him, even those who
- 13:28pierced him, and all the peoples on earth will mourn because of
- 13:32him. So shall it be.
- 13:34Amen. There's a series of visions in
- 13:36this letter, but I'm fascinated to remember that John the
- 13:39Beloved was the only member of the 12 that was mentioned at the
- 13:43cross. He saw him pierced.
- 13:47And he says, look, all of you. Look, those of you that killed
- 13:51him, those of you that called to have him crucified, those of you
- 13:54that took part in that awful scene, can you see him now?
- 13:59Can you realize who he is? Are your blinders from your
- 14:02cultural damage taken off so that you can see this is the
- 14:08Messiah that you were looking for?
- 14:09You just didn't know that he was first coming as a suffering
- 14:13servant, the Lord continues on to introduce himself.
- 14:16I am Alpha and Omega the Mighty in the midst of the seven
- 14:20candlesticks. That's Revelation chapter one,
- 14:23verse 8 and also verse 13. Remember the seven candlesticks?
- 14:28Sometimes it's translated as A7 branched Candlestick.
- 14:32And that would be significant because it looks like the
- 14:36menorah in the temple. It looks like the tree of life.
- 14:39You know, it's the the branched Candlestick that was in the holy
- 14:42place that represented the tree of life back in the Garden of
- 14:45Eden. But he's describing himself as
- 14:48if he were next to this Candlestick, or if he were next
- 14:52to these seven candlesticks. IF7 represents complete and
- 14:56whole, and a Candlestick is a light.
- 14:58Or if it's the menorah, it's the Tree of Life.
- 15:02Our Saviour is the way back to the Tree of Life.
- 15:05It is through him that we can partake again of the Tree of
- 15:09Life without our sins. And it is the Tree of Life that
- 15:12has that fruit that is the love of God that is more delightful
- 15:16and delicious than anything else.
- 15:18So we have all sorts of beautiful symbols as we connect
- 15:21this vision. Now remember, I'm using a book
- 15:24of warming vision then because the Lord says to Nephi, you have
- 15:28had the same vision that my apostle John is going to have.
- 15:32But you don't need to write all of it because I'm going to allow
- 15:35John to record it. So that's the reason why
- 15:39sometimes I tie the tree of life from Nephi and Lehi's vision to
- 15:43the Book of Revelation. Verse 12 to 16 continues on.
- 15:48I turned and I saw 7 golden lampstands, and among them was
- 15:51someone like the Son of Man dressed in a robe, a golden
- 15:54sash. The hair on his head was white
- 15:57like wool, His eyes were like blazing fire, His feet were like
- 16:02bronze. You know, every time we hear of
- 16:04someone's description of the throne, we hear the voices like
- 16:07running waters, and the brightness and the light is just
- 16:11significant. You can read about visions of
- 16:13the throne in Isaiah chapter 6 or Ezekiel or you know many
- 16:17prophets recorded their vision of the Lord and there's a lot of
- 16:21parallels between them. I also think it's significant as
- 16:25we talk about John's vision of the throne of God in heaven to
- 16:31realize that God has a temple in heaven and that the meeting
- 16:37place of the heavenly temple and the earthly temple we are just
- 16:40patterned after the heavenly temple.
- 16:42And so when we see these things in the heavenly temple, we can.
- 16:47You can probably spot some of them in the Mosaic Law in the
- 16:51temple that John knew about 1st 19.
- 16:55He's immediately commanded to write, even while he's still in
- 16:58the vision. Go find your quill.
- 17:00Go get some parchment. I want you to record this.
- 17:03And he does, fortunately. So these seven stars are
- 17:07described. We've already talked about the
- 17:09#7, how it's many, many times, and what it meant.
- 17:13But what is the star? And we're told about that one in
- 17:17verse 20. The seven stars are the angels
- 17:20of the seven churches. And the seven candlesticks,
- 17:23which thou sawest are the seven churches.
- 17:27OK, this is a little different. Now the church members are being
- 17:30represented before the throne of God, and angels are ministering
- 17:35to the church members who are also communing with God.
- 17:38This is a powerful message if we liken it to ourselves.
- 17:42The seven stars are also described as angels.
- 17:45Remember, the word Angel is a messenger, usually an Angel of
- 17:49God. Or is Malak Yahweh a messenger
- 17:52of Jehovah? And they're not only messengers,
- 17:54but they're servants of God. So we have the stars and the
- 17:57angels and the servants and the churches all being represented
- 18:01up here in heaven. As we opened out of chapter two
- 18:04and three, we've got a message to each of these seven churches.
- 18:08I've got a map and a message here that is consistent with
- 18:12each one. As I mentioned earlier, they
- 18:14give a beautiful title and definition of Christ in each of
- 18:17these and a condemnation, a challenge and a promise.
- 18:21And in John W Welch's book Charting the New Testament, he
- 18:25has this all organized very nicely.
- 18:28You can access it online through our archives by just typing in
- 18:32charting the New Testament and you'll be able to see the same
- 18:35chart that I've got here on my slide.
- 18:37The first message is to the Church of Ephesus.
- 18:40But I just have to testify that the Lord really knew his
- 18:43churches. I spent a long time studying
- 18:45culture of these different churches and what they were
- 18:48famous for and what their communities and their towns and
- 18:50their geography was like, and I was blown away.
- 18:53How consistent what we know about them, their political
- 18:57background and physical allocation is with what the Lord
- 19:01describes. And so even though we're just
- 19:03going to touch on them briefly, I've got a lot more information
- 19:05on my handout if you'd like to read it.
- 19:07Chapter 2 reads, I know thy works and thy labours and thy
- 19:11patience and how thou canst not bear them which are evil.
- 19:16Nevertheless, now he's talking to the church in Ephesus.
- 19:18So they had had the gospel for several years by now I have
- 19:23somewhat against thee because thou has left thy first love,
- 19:28and their first love would have been their relationship with the
- 19:31Lord. We're not talking about a
- 19:32girlfriend or a boyfriend or a spouse.
- 19:35We that that it happened in Christianity, but it wasn't part
- 19:38of much of the other Greco Roman Judaic culture at the time.
- 19:42This is the love of God and that you wanting to serve him and
- 19:47that you're willing to enter into the waters of baptism so
- 19:49that you can be loyal to him, he continues on in verse five.
- 19:53I will remove thy Candlestick out of its place, except thou
- 19:58repent. So that's the challenge.
- 20:00And he says, you know, you guys are almost like the Nicolasians.
- 20:03This is chapter 2, verse 6, and he mentions him again in 15.
- 20:07You know, the wealth of the world, the physical problems
- 20:10with materialism, that you're not focusing on the things that
- 20:13matter the most. This letter, the Book of
- 20:15Revelation, fits into our day and age so well.
- 20:17As we look at these seven churches, we can see the
- 20:20worldliness around us creeping in.
- 20:23And it's changing our focus. It's changing what we wear and
- 20:26how we behave and how we spend our time.
- 20:28And he's begging them to go back to your first love, be
- 20:31passionate about your love of God and your service of God, and
- 20:34and stop all this flirtatious with things of the world.
- 20:37He also gives them a promise. In verse seven, I give to eat of
- 20:41the tree of life. The tree of life is a
- 20:44fascinating topic. It's all over the scripture and
- 20:48ancient writings. It's almost every country.
- 20:50Even people that aren't from the biblical tradition, like the
- 20:53Egyptians, used the Lotus flower as their example of the tree of
- 20:57life. This idea that we can have
- 20:59immortality, that we can live again, is promised here by the
- 21:02Lord to those people who repent. If we repent, we will be able to
- 21:07receive this sweet fruit. This fruit, which is the love of
- 21:10God. The next church he addresses in
- 21:13chapters 2 verses 8 to 11 is Smyrna and he says in verse
- 21:17nine, I know your afflictions and your poverty, yet you are
- 21:22rich. And he's so good about saying
- 21:24just because economically you don't feel like you've got the
- 21:27resources you'd like, your spirits are strong, your spirits
- 21:31are rich, and that is far more important than any pennies in
- 21:35your pocket. He also warns them and gives
- 21:37them a prophecy that they will have 10 days of tribulation and
- 21:42then life. Now I mentioned that Domitian
- 21:45had persecuted John ever since the time of Nero, so 20 years
- 21:50earlier we have had Caesar's who are doing a lot of persecution.
- 21:54It used to just be local little bits in the early book of Acts,
- 21:58but by this point in Christian history is when the poor
- 22:02Christian martyrs were taken into the lion's to be in the
- 22:05arenas and things like that. In coliseums, you know this was
- 22:09a very trying time and only the most devout were able to endure
- 22:15the physical persecution. I feel like our persecution now
- 22:18is more emotional and spiritual and theirs was so physical.
- 22:23He also talks to the church in Pergamos.
- 22:25Now this is fascinating. The archaeologists who have dug
- 22:28up this area have found 200,000 volumes of parchment in their
- 22:34ancient libraries, and the Lord talks to them in such
- 22:38appropriate words. In chapter 2, verse 12 to 17 he
- 22:41talks about the empirical cult of the Jews, and he denounces
- 22:45them. He says in verse 17 to him that
- 22:48overcometh will I give to eat the hidden manna, and will him
- 22:53have a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which
- 22:58no man knoweth, saving he that receiveth it.
- 23:01Do you remember that a bowl of manna, it was saved from the
- 23:05wilderness of Sinai for those 40 years of walking and it was
- 23:09placed inside the ark of the covenant and it never went bad.
- 23:12You know, the the God we worship was the God who would feed you
- 23:15and take care of you and nourish you.
- 23:17It's a beautiful image. And it's also an example that we
- 23:21believe in a God of miracles that is usually referred to as
- 23:25the hidden manna. But I think there are other
- 23:27implications to it because he's talking about a new name that's
- 23:30written on the Whitestone. And as I mentioned earlier,
- 23:33Joseph Smith as well as many other records have given
- 23:36examples that the early Christians had their initiatory
- 23:40endowment ceremonies. They knew the higher law and
- 23:44they were willing to covenant with God.
- 23:47Chapter 2 verses 18 to 29 talk about Thyra and then Jezebel.
- 23:52And Chapter 2 verse 26 To the one who is victorious and does
- 23:57my will to the end, I will give that one the morning star and he
- 24:02mentions the morning star here and he mentions it in chapter
- 24:0522. So this beautiful image of our
- 24:08Saviour, another title for our Lord and God, the morning star.
- 24:13Chapter 3 continues on with the same parallel 4 messages to each
- 24:17church and to Sardis. He says in verse one of chapter
- 24:20three, you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.
- 24:26Wake up, strengthen what remains and is about you are about to
- 24:29die. I don't think he's talking
- 24:31physically. I think he's talking
- 24:32spiritually. You know you are losing your
- 24:34faith because you care more about the worldly thoughts than
- 24:38the Lord's thoughts. But then he promises that he's
- 24:41encouraging them. He says in verse five, he that
- 24:43overcometh the same shall be clothed in white raiment.
- 24:48You know, this becomes a very important image throughout the
- 24:51rest of this book. The White Raiment is the purity
- 24:54of the Saints. Next Church of Philadelphia,
- 24:57chapter 3 verses 7 to 13, the words of him who is holy and
- 25:02true, who holds the key of David.
- 25:05What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can
- 25:10open. Now remember in the ancient
- 25:11world there are not very many things that are under lock and
- 25:14key. And the key was hand carved.
- 25:17It was usually quite large and bulky and wooden.
- 25:20The locks were also wooden. They were also hand carved.
- 25:22And anyone who's holding a key on their neck or around their
- 25:26their on a chain was someone of great importance and you needed
- 25:30to give due respect to them because this was a very rare
- 25:33thing to see. And so he who holds the key of
- 25:37David is our God. He is the greatest key holder
- 25:42that we know. Verse 11 of chapter 3 says I am
- 25:45coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that
- 25:49no one will take your crown. You know those of us who have
- 25:53entered into covenants need to follow these same good counsels
- 25:57that were given by the Lord through John the Beloved,
- 26:01Chapter 3, verse 20 in the NIV reads.
- 26:03I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
- 26:07opens the door, I will come in. This reminds me back to Liberty
- 26:12Jail when the Lord taught Joseph many are called I'm standing at
- 26:17the door and knocking, but only those who open the door will I
- 26:21be allowed to come in. But I will come in and I can
- 26:25have the indwelling. Remember, that's the image from
- 26:28the ancient text of the Shekinah, this pillar of fire.
- 26:32The and that's why I think we're called the baptism of fire.
- 26:35The Spirit is representing an indwelling of our God.
- 26:38Verse 31 talks more about God with these open doors.
- 26:42It says to the one who is victorious, I will give the
- 26:45right to sit with me on my throne just as I was victorious
- 26:50and sat down with my father on his throne we see a beautiful
- 26:55example of God opening doors. In chapter 4, verse one, it says
- 26:59that John looked and behold a door was opened in heaven.
- 27:03Now some people place this with the message to the churches.
- 27:06Some people is it the chapter change on to the next subject.
- 27:09But I just want to remind you that in the early Christian
- 27:12Church we have beautiful mosaics of God opening doors, of opening
- 27:17the heavens. And here's one from Ravenna,
- 27:20Italy 4th 5th century, a 6th century as well.
- 27:23I don't know the the churches that are built there cover
- 27:25several 100 years, but God's hand is coming through the
- 27:29clouds in a beautiful manner to touch those down below and it's
- 27:34behind a curtain as he's coming through the clouds as if it were
- 27:38just in another room. It's really a beautiful image
- 27:41here of God opening doors for us and opening veils.
- 27:44And anytime you see hands, God's hand near the veil, I always
- 27:47think of Christ's death where the veil of the temple was rent
- 27:52and the temple separated out the holy Place and the Holy of
- 27:55Holies so that we could all return to God.
- 27:57Chapter 4 then moves on to the throne of God.
- 28:00And this is just a beautiful description.
- 28:03I mentioned earlier that a lot of people had this throne
- 28:05Theophany. And I'll just name a few Enoch,
- 28:07Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Stephen.
- 28:12And those are all in the Bible. And there are more.
- 28:14And if you look at a restored scripture, there's even more.
- 28:18Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, Alma, brother of Jared, Moroni,
- 28:22Joseph, Sidney, Oliver, and just keep going.
- 28:25There are so many, and in verse two he said that John was in the
- 28:29Spirit and behold, a throne was set in heaven.
- 28:33Now, in the Mosaic Tabernacle and in the early temples of
- 28:38Solomon and Zerubbabel, the Holy of Holies was the throne room.
- 28:43They saw the Ark of the Covenant in both the Tabernacle and in
- 28:47Solomon's temple as the throne of God and the Mercy seat.
- 28:51The top cover was God's place to sit and so as he is looking into
- 28:56heaven and he sees a throne room, it's often depicted as
- 28:59part of that temple. The Holy of Holies.
- 29:02Verse three says he that sat was to look upon like Jasper and
- 29:06sardine stone and there was a rainbow around about the throne
- 29:10in the sight of emerald and round about the throne.
- 29:13This is verse 4. Now there were four and 20
- 29:15seats, and upon the seats were four and 20 elders sitting.
- 29:19Now this is one of those verses that is so helpful to have some
- 29:22understanding and texture who they were.
- 29:24They're dressed in white, verse four says.
- 29:27And they had crowns of gold on their head.
- 29:29But we are so blessed to know that these represent the seven
- 29:34churches. They're elders from those
- 29:36churches, and they have been able to maintain their
- 29:41testimonies before they passed away and in heaven.
- 29:46Now they are before the throne of God, so these are probably
- 29:49people that John knew and served with.
- 29:51First five says the seven lampstands of fire were burning
- 29:55before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.
- 29:59So we've got lampstands, we've got people, and we've got these
- 30:02elders. And Section 77, Joseph says, now
- 30:06what are these things surrounding the altar?
- 30:08Who are they? They all fit in.
- 30:10And he was told in verse five, these are the elders whom John
- 30:14saw, and the elders were faithful.
- 30:18Before we leave this section about the seven branch lamp
- 30:20stand, I also want to remind you that in the early Christian
- 30:24artwork, sometimes they have Christ hanging on the tree of
- 30:28life, that it was He who made it possible for us to return to the
- 30:32presence of the Lord, go back to the Paradise cycle glory, and
- 30:37enter into the Lord's presence without our sins.
- 30:40It is He who allowed that. So this, this tree of life image
- 30:43with the candles are are really important.
- 30:47Chapter 4, verse five, reads From the throne came lightnings
- 30:50and rumblings and thunders. That's the new rendition.
- 30:53I want to tell you a little about this.
- 30:54Years and years ago, probably 30 years ago now, a group of
- 30:59wonderful biblical scholars at Brigham University decided that
- 31:02they wanted to write their own translation of the New
- 31:04Testament, and over time we received permission from the
- 31:08church leaders. And right now coming out over
- 31:11the last decade have been these wonderful volumes.
- 31:13Each book of the New Testament has its own volume of commentary
- 31:17with its own translation, and we refer to this translation as the
- 31:21New Rendition. And I love it especially in the
- 31:24Book of Revelation. The throne of God is described
- 31:27with a lot of light. Do you remember back to Moses
- 31:30Tabernacle, when the Shekinah was a pillar of light by night
- 31:33over the Tabernacle? And it's also there at Moses
- 31:37dedicatory prayer of the temple that the Lord received it unto
- 31:40him. And we also saw it in Kirtland
- 31:43where it came down like a fire, and the neighbors thought it was
- 31:45on fire and they brought their buckets of water.
- 31:48And of course it was just the spirit of God.
- 31:50There was no smoke, nothing was burned.
- 31:52Chapter 4, verse six, as in front of the throne, there was
- 31:55what looked like a sea of glass or clear as crystal.
- 31:58That's the MIV. But Joseph, when he asked about
- 32:01this, was told it is the earth and it's sanctified, immortal
- 32:06and eternal state. So we'll be reintroduced to this
- 32:08at the end of the Book of Revelation when they talk about
- 32:10it again. Continuing on, we learn more
- 32:13about these four living creatures, or beasts.
- 32:16Round about the throne were four living creatures like a lion, an
- 32:20ox, a face like a man or a flying eagle.
- 32:24And when Joseph asked about them, he was told in section 77,
- 32:27verse two and three. They are figurative expressions
- 32:32to represent the glory of the classes or beings in their
- 32:36destined order, in the enjoyment of their eternal Felicity.
- 32:40So we've got animals in heaven, we have the classes of of flying
- 32:44animals, we have the classes of domesticated animals, we have
- 32:46the classes of humans. And each of them has a
- 32:49representative at the throne of God who's carrying out these
- 32:52work. This work, it's it's really
- 32:54quite powerful. Also these four images come from
- 32:58a little bit of consistency throughout.
- 33:00The rest of the New Testament came to identify the four
- 33:04gospels, and each one represented another evangelist
- 33:07who wrote the four gospels. So they use these symbols in
- 33:10other places. Joseph also wrote on this as a
- 33:14sermon in Nauvoo. It was April 8th, 1843, and he
- 33:17said John heard the words of the beast giving glory to God and
- 33:22understood them. God who made the beast, could
- 33:25understand every language spoken by them, so there will be an
- 33:31ability for animals to speak in heaven.
- 33:33This is really exciting. He says, though, that the
- 33:36animals are full of eyes before and behind.
- 33:39That's chapter 4, verse six. So when Joseph asked about that,
- 33:42he's told that the eyes are representative of light and full
- 33:45of knowledge. That's section 77, verse 4.
- 33:48So this omniscience, this ability to see without the veil,
- 33:52harnessing our second estate, these people in heaven can see
- 33:56before and after, and even the animals that are there, these
- 33:59four living creatures that are there, has this ability to see.
- 34:02Interestingly, each of the living creatures also have 6
- 34:07wings. They're set in three pairs.
- 34:10And when Joseph asked about it, he was told that the wings
- 34:12represent the power to act in section 77, verse 4.
- 34:17Remember back in Isaiah chapter 6, there were two wings covering
- 34:20the eyes and two wings covering the feet.
- 34:22You know, as if it were powered to see power to move.
- 34:24You know, it's really fun to put together some of these symbols
- 34:27and just explore in your in your heart and mind what they could
- 34:30represent. Chapter 4, verse 10 says the
- 34:33elders cast their crowns before the throne.
- 34:36You are worthy. Oh Lord our God is verse 11.
- 34:40And all of us need to do that every night as we kneel down and
- 34:44take off our worldly signs and bow before our Lord.
- 34:49It's a beautiful image for all of us.
- 34:51Chapter 5 now begins by saying that then I, meaning John, saw a
- 34:56scroll in the right hand of the one seated on the throne.
- 35:01It had writing on both sides and it was sealed with 7 seals.
- 35:05And I saw a mighty Angel proclaiming with a loud voice
- 35:08who is worthy to break the seals open to the scroll.
- 35:12Now all this you have to know a little bit of historical
- 35:14background. For you know the seal is a
- 35:19affidated, that this was written accurately, that it was it was
- 35:23witnessed, and that no one else is to open it except for the
- 35:26person that it's addressed to or or except for a judge.
- 35:29And they may open it and they may read it, but no one else can
- 35:33read it. So we see a lot about these
- 35:35seals in history, but there's even more significance as we
- 35:40look at them spiritually. Of course there's seven, so it's
- 35:43whole, it's complete, and it is God who is finishing them.
- 35:47He will be our judge, He will be the one to open it.
- 35:50But John doesn't know that yet, and so he's crying.
- 35:53And in verse two of chapter 5 it says who is worthy to open the
- 35:57scroll by breaking its seals because no one is found to be
- 36:01the judge of doing it. So we continue to read and in
- 36:04verse five it says do not weep the angels talking to John.
- 36:08Behold the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David has
- 36:13triumphed to open the scroll and its seven seals.
- 36:18So we assume that it is God Elohim who is now handing the
- 36:22scroll to the lion of Judah. And isn't this interesting that
- 36:25some of the symbols of our Savior are a lion Coming from
- 36:29the patriarchal blessing that Jacob gave to his son Judah?
- 36:32He uses this image of a lion of Judah, but he's also the lamb.
- 36:38And the lion of Judah will lie down with the Lamb of God when
- 36:42he comes again. But at this time we have this
- 36:45image of a very strong, powerful man, a lion of the Lord, and he
- 36:51will completely open up these seals.
- 36:54And when Joseph prayed about it, he was told in section 77, verse
- 36:58six that this book that John saw contains the revealed will,
- 37:03mysteries and the works of God, the hidden things of this earth
- 37:08during the 7000 years of its temporal existence.
- 37:12So it's about 1000 years to each of these period, starting with
- 37:15Adam, 1000 years from Adam to Noah and Enochs in that time
- 37:20period. And then we have 1000 years from
- 37:22Noah to Abraham, and then 1000 years from Abraham to King David
- 37:27and then to the Savior. So there's the 4000 years before
- 37:30and then the 4000 years after would be 1000AD2000AD and then
- 37:36the Millennium, and then the celestialized Earth.
- 37:39So that is the history that we were told by Joseph that this
- 37:43meant. But they wouldn't have been
- 37:44books like we know them. A book is a scroll, You know,
- 37:47they they kept their writings in different ways since they're
- 37:49not. The printing brush hasn't been
- 37:51developed yet. Verse 7 in section 77 explains a
- 37:54little more about the seven seals.
- 37:56It says the first seal contains the things of the first thousand
- 37:59years, the second also the 2nd 1000 years.
- 38:01So with every seal being opened we're getting a new part of the
- 38:04story. And in Revelation chapter 5,
- 38:07verse six it says having 7 horns and seven eyes which were the
- 38:11spirits of God who came forth to the earth.
- 38:16And Joseph Smith changes this. We see this Lamb of God on the
- 38:19throne, but instead of having complete a number of whole and
- 38:23complete Joseph, who may not understand that symbolism adds
- 38:2712 horns and 12 eyes, because he knows of the 12 tribes of Israel
- 38:32and the 12 apostles of the Lamb, and he sees that as more
- 38:36consistent. I don't know what John
- 38:38originally said, but I can appreciate that Joseph is trying
- 38:41to say no. The Lamb of God is is is filled
- 38:44with the order of God and we can see him from the creation all
- 38:47the way down, Verse 8 reads, each one having a harp and a
- 38:50golden bowl is filled with incense, which are the prayers
- 38:54of the Saints. Now we also read that twice in
- 38:58the book of Psalms that the incense represents the prayer
- 39:00of. That's why in the Holy Place you
- 39:03have the incense altar. It's a small table.
- 39:06The smoke was to constantly rise, but I'm thrilled to hear
- 39:09there's musical instruments in heaven as well, and it sounds
- 39:12like the harp is going to be one of them.
- 39:15Verse 9 reads in the MIV you are worthy to take the scroll and to
- 39:20open it's seals because you were slain and with your blood you
- 39:25purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and
- 39:29people and nation. You have made them to be a
- 39:32Kingdom of priests who serve our God and they will reign on
- 39:37earth. It's a beautiful description of
- 39:40how those in heaven can praise the Lord, and I hope we as
- 39:45messengers of God and disciples of Christ can do the same here
- 39:48on earth. Chapter 5, verse 13, reads,
- 39:51Blessing and honor and glory and power be unto him that sitteth
- 39:55upon the throne and unto the Lamb.
- 39:57For those of you that are familiar with Handel's Messiah,
- 40:00I hope that rung a bell, as you can almost hear the beautiful
- 40:03praise that was put to music in these verses here.
- 40:07May we in all that we do. Fall before our Lord and praise
- 40:11and worship Him. I hope that the Book of
- 40:14Revelation can continue to open up and have more meaning as we
- 40:17use the keys that are given us in the Restoration.
- 40:21I also want to testify that I believe that Jesus is not only
- 40:25the Lamb of God, but he is also the lion of Judah, and He is the
- 40:30great and last sacrifice for which we are all eternally
- 40:34grateful. In the name of Jesus Christ,
- 40:36Amen.
