- 0:49Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:54culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:56media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 1:00through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 1:02I'm your host Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 1:05youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 1:09Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 1:11OK, you'll notice if you guys listen often that I added
- 1:14Australian into the intro because we have so many new
- 1:17listeners and because I obviously have an American
- 1:20sounding accent. I think there is some confusion
- 1:22sometimes about our back story about where we're located and
- 1:26that can impact how people receive the podcast and what I
- 1:29choose to talk about and what I choose to not talk about.
- 1:32So I am Canadian and we are based in Australia.
- 1:35We are not American. So I thought, you know what,
- 1:37let's just nip that in the bud. Let's just Australian to the
- 1:40intro so there's never any confusion and you guys know what
- 1:44the brand story is a little bit more upfront.
- 1:46That being said, I did want to acknowledge it feels weird
- 1:51sitting down and acting like everything is normal and I'm
- 1:54here to deliver you guys the tea basically, when so much has been
- 1:59going on. I mean, this, this is how it
- 2:00always feels to be honest. And it feels really heightened
- 2:03right now because of what's been happening in Minnesota over the
- 2:06weekend. But it also feels a bit
- 2:08hypocritical and Western focused when stuff like this has been
- 2:12happening all around the world to marginalized groups.
- 2:15I mean forever, but we have so many American listeners.
- 2:19I know we have a lot of new American listeners.
- 2:22So I did want to say I hope you're all doing OK.
- 2:26I know the weight of what is going on must be so heavy and
- 2:30fuck ice and that's that. Also, I did want to note, I was
- 2:33going to cover the American influencers and celebrities
- 2:37saying that their Tik Toks are not posting that their contents
- 2:40being suppressed, but Annabelle's going to cover that
- 2:42tomorrow because it's a little bit more mini tech focused and
- 2:45she'll cover why that's allegedly happening.
- 2:49But yes, that is not one of the stories for today, but it is a
- 2:51massive story in Internet culture right now.
- 2:54So that's why I'm not covering it in today's episode.
- 2:56All right, the first story that I have for you guys today is
- 2:59Hallie Kate is engaged to her boyfriend.
- 3:02Read of the infamous Sophia Lacorte TikTok love triangle
- 3:07drama. So New York City influencer
- 3:10Hallie Kate got engaged to her boyfriend read while on vacation
- 3:13last week. Normally, an influencer
- 3:15engagement would not necessarily be newsworthy here at Mini.
- 3:19But as we know, this relationship has been front and
- 3:21center in the New York City Tik Toker scene because of this
- 3:25alleged or like, quote UN quote love triangle between Hallie
- 3:28Reed and influencer Sofia Lacourt.
- 3:30I say love triangle very loosely here.
- 3:32So Hallie and Reed, they first got together in early 2023, and
- 3:36then he broke up with her in late 2023.
- 3:38And this came to light because he was spotted by TikTok users,
- 3:42by followers of the girls and it was posted on Reddit.
- 3:45So this is from the R slash New York City influencer snark
- 3:48subreddit. Quote.
- 3:50The two were at Ludlow Hotel cuddled up on the couch enjoying
- 3:53cocktails last night. I don't have a picture, but it
- 3:55was them. Yes.
- 3:55Sophia and Hallie were at the same influencer dinner on
- 3:58Thursday. And This is why I was shocked to
- 4:00see the two together on what appeared to be a date.
- 4:02The two as in Reed and Sophia. So yeah, people were like Sophia
- 4:06and Hallie run in the same circles.
- 4:08And then at the time Hallie did confirm on her TikTok comments,
- 4:12she said no, this is the T She was standing with me as I texted
- 4:15my ex and went through my following DM D him asking him on
- 4:19a date. Gross of both of them.
- 4:21So that was you know when this all happened.
- 4:23She also described Sophia as quote the worst person I've ever
- 4:25met in my life. Imagine standing next to me
- 4:27while texting my ex asking how he's doing and D Ming him that
- 4:30same night. So her confirmation and her
- 4:33comments really sent a wave of hate to Sophia.
- 4:36And I think at first, people kind of felt, I mean, I don't
- 4:38know if they felt bad for Sophia given the story that Hallie gave
- 4:41us, but, you know, they didn't want to see her being dragged
- 4:45like that. However, then Sophia really lent
- 4:47into the drama. She made all of these horrible
- 4:50videos about Hallie and Reed, and then she made like one or
- 4:52two songs about the whole situation.
- 4:55And she really used this opportunity to, like, go viral
- 4:59herself. Oh my goodness some of you guys
- 5:03are acting like I drop kicked someone's puppy.
- 5:07I went on a date with a guy that was single.
- 5:10I guess the paparazzi cared and was commenting on his ex
- 5:15girlfriend's stuff. Commenting on her post saying me
- 5:20Sophia Cord was with her ex-boyfriend.
- 5:24His ex-girlfriend texts me and says hi this is Hallie because
- 5:29she knows I don't have her number because we're not
- 5:31friends. I'm getting DMS that you were on
- 5:34a date with my ex last night. Oh my gosh I'm so sorry.
- 5:40I didn't know you owned him. He wasn't wearing a collar.
- 5:42Genuinely feel like so many people are just coming on here
- 5:46and bullying me for fun like I'm scared.
- 5:50Like thank God I'm OK OK if you guys actually think that I would
- 6:00come on here and cry, you have the wrong bitch.
- 6:03And this is actually the situation that gave us Ken
- 6:06Urich's famous TikTok sound. I actually hate that little
- 6:09ginger bitch because Hallie and Reed got back together and then
- 6:13Sophia like went in even harder and was doing story times about
- 6:17their dates and just it was insane.
- 6:20So yes, all the TikTok girlies kind of band together and
- 6:23supported Hallie and that is where we got Ken Urich's line.
- 6:27So now Hallie and Reed are engaged.
- 6:28And I did want to say to all the people who are like, I can't
- 6:31believe she got back together with this guy who said he wasn't
- 6:34or she wasn't the love of his life.
- 6:35I can't believe she got engaged to him.
- 6:38I think like, they're so young. Literally, Hallie was, I think,
- 6:4223 or 24 when he broke up with her.
- 6:44Like, they are so young. You have no idea who you are at
- 6:47that age. It's totally normal to want to
- 6:49experience other things and to not be sure.
- 6:52And it's also fine to get back together with somebody and find
- 6:55your way back to each other. Like, I don't think that that
- 6:57criticism about Hallie and Reed, in my opinion, is very valid.
- 7:01I think we often forget how young they are in this
- 7:03situation. Or maybe the people criticizing
- 7:05them are also that young, so maybe they don't have that
- 7:07perspective yet. A lot of people have issues with
- 7:09the fact that Reed appears to not be super happy in Hallie's
- 7:13content. Again, I mean, I sound like a
- 7:15Hallie and Reed Stan right now, but I think in the scheme of
- 7:20influencer relationships to judge and influencers to judge
- 7:23in general, I think the amount of hate that Hallie Kate gets is
- 7:27not warranted. And yeah, I think he probably is
- 7:30just not very comfortable on camera.
- 7:32We don't see probably even a fraction of their relationship.
- 7:36Now. A lot of people are a little bit
- 7:38concerned. They want her to get a prenup
- 7:40because obviously she makes so much money.
- 7:43Fair enough. If you want to share your
- 7:45opinion on that, I think that's fine.
- 7:47And that's different. And now people also have a lot
- 7:50to say about her ring. So her ring is this beautiful
- 7:54huge long diamond shaped diamond all down her finger and then it
- 7:59has 2 bands and one band is gold and one has diamonds around it.
- 8:02And the bands are kind of off center, like they're not
- 8:05parallel to each other. One is a little bit diagonal.
- 8:08It's all one band, like it's all one ring, she said.
- 8:11Read custom designed to this with a jeweler.
- 8:13OK, and now in like all of her tick tock comment sections,
- 8:19people are putting screenshots of what looks to be this exact
- 8:22ring design from Amazon in the comments section.
- 8:26I think as like a gotcha moment. There's only so many designs
- 8:30that you can do in a ring and there's only so many like trends
- 8:32that are happening at one point. And having like an unusual ring
- 8:35design like Halley's is what's trending right now.
- 8:38And there's so many ways that something could be custom made
- 8:41without it being like a totally brand new design, right?
- 8:43Like that's not really what custom made means in my opinion.
- 8:46And this Amazon ring is probably just a RIP off of, you know, a
- 8:50jewelry designer's design. And who's to say that Reed
- 8:54didn't get her ring at that exact jewelry designer that
- 8:57Amazon is ripping off? Like, we have no idea.
- 8:59I don't know. I just don't think that this is
- 9:00the gotcha moment that people think it is.
- 9:02I know people have issues with Hallie Kate and how she
- 9:05seemingly promotes overconsumption with her hauls
- 9:07and things like that. But in terms of her engagement,
- 9:10I think we just need to let her live and be happy and trust that
- 9:13she is making the right decisions for herself.
- 9:15And if she loves this ring, whether he got it on Amazon or
- 9:19he's lying to her about it being custom made or whatever, like
- 9:22who cares? Literally who cares?
- 9:24OK, the next way that I have for you guys is this is niche, but
- 9:28it's all over my For You page. And if you're Australian, then
- 9:30it's probably all over yours too.
- 9:32Australian creator Emily Jolie Pitt has made it to the
- 9:36Australian Open, but not with Ralph Lauren.
- 9:39So a creator who goes by Emily Jolie Pitt, obviously Jolie
- 9:42Pitt, I'm assuming is not her real last name, has found
- 9:45herself in a box at the Australian Open and she has 4000
- 9:49TikTok followers. So this is like, I love this
- 9:51story. This is like a story of tapping
- 9:54into niche subcultures and how powerful that can be and how
- 9:59beneficial that can be for your brand, but also for you as a
- 10:02creator. So she made it to the Australian
- 10:05Open with a brand after her hilarious post about how she's
- 10:09obsessed with the Australian Open and also Ralph Lauren went,
- 10:13I would say like a relatively viral within a specific niche.
- 10:15So her content is always a selfie with text over top and
- 10:19she posts really, I don't know. I can't say another word niche.
- 10:23I'm sorry, I can't say niche a million more times, but I'm
- 10:25going to very niche takes usually about Australian culture
- 10:29or pop culture. But the through line is usually
- 10:33that she's referencing like obscure celebrity facts, Sydney
- 10:37socialites, like 2000 Australian pop culture drama.
- 10:40Things are like really obscure. But if you know, you know.
- 10:43And if you don't know, then you have no idea what she's posting
- 10:45about. So her content is really funny
- 10:47and she's gaining a very cold following and a very specific
- 10:51demographic. Part of her stick is that she's
- 10:53obsessed with the Ralph Lauren Factory outlet and the
- 10:57Australian Open. So she started posting content
- 10:59about how it was her dream to attend the AO with Ralph Lauren.
- 11:03This became a meme amongst her followers and they were
- 11:06desperately trying to get Ralph Lauren's attention to help Emily
- 11:08get to the Australian Open and she was making edits of herself
- 11:13with like the socialites that usually are in the Ralph Lauren.
- 11:16I don't know if it's a box, a suite, I'm sorry, I don't know
- 11:18tennis very well. Who are normally like there in
- 11:21the Ralph Lauren suite and it's like her in the middle of like
- 11:24these two socialites and stuff. It's so funny.
- 11:26Anyways, Ralph Lauren didn't actually send her but Beginning
- 11:29Boutique and MasterCard apparently both reached out and
- 11:32she has made it to the Australian Open.
- 11:34So obviously this is really good PR for these brands, again
- 11:37within a smaller niche. However, I've also seen a lot of
- 11:41people talk about online how this was a huge miss for Ralph
- 11:44Lauren. Even though Emily doesn't have
- 11:46like a giant following yet, I am predicting she will pop the fuck
- 11:50off. I think by year's end she will
- 11:51have hundreds of thousands of followers.
- 11:53Even though she doesn't have a ton of followers yet, she is
- 11:57making a name for herself in the very exact demographic that buys
- 12:01Ralph Lauren. Like her comment sections are
- 12:03filled with Australian socialites, PR girls, media
- 12:07girls, influencers, because she talks about them and references
- 12:11them and like I said, makes edits of herself with them.
- 12:14And it's really funny. Like it's very harmless.
- 12:16It's really funny. And she's tapping into a very
- 12:19specific subculture with in Australia that's really only
- 12:22covered by like the Daily Mail. And so she's establishing
- 12:25herself as like almost a fan girl of this subculture.
- 12:29And because of that, this subculture is taking notice
- 12:32because again, they are covered in media, but usually it's not
- 12:36mainstream. It's usually not people talking
- 12:38about them in the same way that like we talk about influencers
- 12:40here, for example. It's a lot more niche,
- 12:43unfortunately. This was definitely a missed
- 12:45opportunity for Ralph Lauren, but I think it is possible that
- 12:49they will reach out to her to work with her soon.
- 12:51I mean, I hope, I mean, I'm just guessing.
- 12:52I'm just guessing. I have no basis for that
- 12:54assumption, but I'm assuming. All right.
- 12:56And the last way that I have for you guys today, a relatively
- 13:00light slash funny one. To end the episode, we need to
- 13:05talk about this Dramageddon drag show that is making the rounds
- 13:10online. So we first saw clips of this
- 13:12drag show posted by Kat Tenbarge, who's arguably one of
- 13:15the most famous Internet culture journalists.
- 13:17She posted a compilation of clips of the show which included
- 13:21the Queen's lip syncing 2 iconic sound bites from the BI sister
- 13:24saga. She also credited the drag
- 13:26Queens in the show in the caption.
- 13:28Grace period as Totti Westbrook, Anaphylactic shock as Geoffrey
- 13:32Star chartreuse Sprite as James Charles Benedict the bastard as
- 13:37Shane Dawson, Penny Nicole Dime as the birthday dinner waitress.
- 13:40Sucking Dick and cock like I'm just.
- 13:42Like, Oh my. God.
- 13:48And my apology, I stand behind 100% and still rain true Hello.
- 13:53Karma. My past has been recorded, it's
- 13:57been videoed. Just makes me sick to my stomach
- 14:00because I don't know who that person was.
- 14:02So the post promoting the show sold it as quote.
- 14:04Get ready to relive the wildest, pettiest, most scandalous moment
- 14:08in YouTube history live on stage.
- 14:10We're talking 2019 levels of chaos, betrayal videos, tearful
- 14:14confessionals, cryptic tweets, makeup mogul meltdowns, and
- 14:17more. You guys, I am so jealous that I
- 14:20wasn't here like it actually causes me physical pain that I
- 14:25wasn't at this show. So at the time of recording,
- 14:28cats video has a master on 10,000 views and the initial
- 14:31post promoting the show has around 20,000 likes.
- 14:34Discussions around the drag show are also popping up across
- 14:37Reddit. So the reason I wanted to talk
- 14:39about this is first of all, it's obviously iconic, but also
- 14:42because it's interesting how bi sister still has such a
- 14:46stronghold in pockets of culture.
- 14:49And I have a few theories as to why, and I'm interested to hear
- 14:54your theories as well. Spy sister was such a
- 14:56monoculture Internet culture moment for youth audiences.
- 15:00We've obviously had some others, Coldplay, the cheating Coldplay
- 15:03scandal thing that happened last year that comes to mind.
- 15:06You know, we've had these big viral moments for sure, but this
- 15:10was something that we could like sink our teeth into, right?
- 15:12There were multiple sides to this story.
- 15:14At first we were against James and then we were against Tati
- 15:17and then Jeffrey Star got involved and Shane Dawson got
- 15:19involved and then we against them.
- 15:21And you know, there was there was a lot to sink our teeth into
- 15:25and it really took over the Internet and it took over the
- 15:27media in a lot of ways too, in a way that Internet culture had
- 15:31not taken over the media yet. On top of this, I think we
- 15:34sometimes forget how much drama there was on YouTube at that
- 15:38time. So like this was a period of
- 15:40time where we were locked the fuck in.
- 15:42Like we were locked in to YouTube drama, especially in the
- 15:46beauty community. That was a huge genre of the
- 15:49platform. That was something people were
- 15:51highly invested in. And after by sister, we actually
- 15:54got a bit of fatigue from that. And now we see, you know, kind
- 15:56of like a different experience with quote UN quote YouTube
- 15:59drama. But at the time, like this was
- 16:01at its peak. Like YouTube drama was at its
- 16:03peak and we were locked the fuck in.
- 16:05We also got so many iconic lines from it.
- 16:07It was like these larger than life, incredibly dramatic
- 16:11personalities. None of them were backing down
- 16:13from the camera. Like nobody was trying to like
- 16:15be private about any of this stuff.
- 16:17They were all just fucking going for it.
- 16:19And I also think the shock, the shock that somebody who was so
- 16:24close to James Charles, and this is not me supporting James
- 16:26Charles, but just in general, you know, who's who was so close
- 16:30to somebody who was like significantly younger than them
- 16:32at the time, who had been kind of like a mentor to them to
- 16:36James. Like Tati being almost kind of a
- 16:38mentor to James, you know, would turn on him like that in such a
- 16:41scathing way. And the knowledge that we have
- 16:44as well that she had to script that video, you know, get all
- 16:48ready to film, sit down, film, and then get that.
- 16:52I don't know if she edited it or somebody else did, but
- 16:54regardless, it was edited and then she had to upload it, write
- 16:58the description, write the title and hit publish all of that.
- 17:02And she still decided to post that.
- 17:04That's like another level of commitment to letting us know
- 17:08how you felt about somebody that you used to be friends with.
- 17:11Anyways, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 17:14Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
