- 0:00Speaker 1: Kay Oliver is a UK europe corresponding. K great to
- 0:02Speaker 1: have you on the program. Tell us about the end
- 0:05Speaker 1: of life bill, some quite heavy hitting opposition to it.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Well, absolutely, Ryan, Yes, and it is going to have
- 0:13Speaker 2: a vote in Parliament this Friday. It's called the Terminally
- 0:17Speaker 2: Ill Adults end of Life Bill that's been proposed by
- 0:21Speaker 2: the Labor MP Kim Leadbeater, and basically it would give
- 0:26Speaker 2: those with less than six months to live the right
- 0:29Speaker 2: to die. Now the opposition is mounting and we have
- 0:33Speaker 2: had the Health Secretary West streeting and now the Justice
- 0:38Speaker 2: Secretary shabanamah Mood saying that they are going to vote
- 0:42Speaker 2: against this bill. Ms Mahmood has put out a letter
- 0:45Speaker 2: to her constituents today saying that no government should be
- 0:50Speaker 2: able to offer death on demand, and that she also
- 0:54Speaker 2: worries about placing so great a destructive power in the
- 1:00Speaker 2: hands of the state. She cites sadly recent scandals have
- 1:06Speaker 2: reminded us that the state and those acting on its
- 1:10Speaker 2: behalf are not always benign. So it gives you some
- 1:14Speaker 2: flavor of the opposition that's coming through on this, Ryan.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We wait to see what happens on Friday, but it
- 1:21Speaker 2: would seem that in a poll that's been carried out today,
- 1:24Speaker 2: two thirds of the population here are in favor of
- 1:28Speaker 2: this bill.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it sounds like it might get through despite that
- 1:32Speaker 1: opposition from the you know, even the health sexture as
- 1:35Speaker 1: you mentioned. So this Bert, the storm Bert that's coming
- 1:39Speaker 1: well already started to come in already some lives lost.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Well, absolutely, it's raging around as I'm speaking. I live
- 1:47Speaker 2: close to London. But there's a danger to life warning.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We've had three people already been killed. A motorists had
- 1:54Speaker 2: a tree smash onto the car. We've got a dog
- 1:57Speaker 2: walker killed, etc. We've got seven flood warnings across South
- 2:02Speaker 2: Wales where they've declared a major incident in the Rhonda region.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We've got thirty one thousand homes in Northern Ireland without power.
- 2:12Speaker 2: We've got rivers rising, people's sandbagging all over and lots
- 2:17Speaker 2: of people, particularly in Yorkshire, saying that the local authorities
- 2:22Speaker 2: haven't been taking any notice of warnings that basically their
- 2:26Speaker 2: homes are liable to flood. Though you've got a siren
- 2:31Speaker 2: screaming out that was used in World War Two to
- 2:34Speaker 2: warn people that they're in danger. So also in London,
- 2:38Speaker 2: they've canceled. There's a big Winter Wonderland celebration in Ibark
- 2:42Speaker 2: that's been scrapped today, along with nine other major parks
- 2:46Speaker 2: that have been closed as is what's called a triple
- 2:49Speaker 2: weather alert involving snow, rain and gale force winds. Carry
- 2:54Speaker 2: on battering this country.
