Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Peace out.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Peace out. Peace out.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in Gordy Chiesa,
- 0:35Speaker 3: NBA guru, Utah Jazz insider, longtime assistant coach in the association,
- 0:41Speaker 3: friend of the program, and a staple here for all
- 0:44Speaker 3: things basketball coverage on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Gordy, welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 0:50Speaker 1: Sean, I'm doing well. This is our third year together,
- 0:53Speaker 1: you and I, and this is my 10th year with
- 0:56Speaker 1: the ESPN Radio 700, so I'm ecstatic.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Well, we're ecstatic to have you, and the NBA season
- 1:03Speaker 3: right around the corner. Jazz will tip off the regular
- 1:07Speaker 3: season on the road against Memphis on October 21st, so
- 1:11Speaker 3: we're roughly three weeks away from this. And, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 3: this is a team now that had their media day
- 1:17Speaker 3: and you got to hear from some of the young
- 1:19Speaker 3: cats and you got to hear from will Hardy. And I,
- 1:22Speaker 3: I want to start with the coach because, you know,
- 1:25Speaker 3: we've been talking about it for a couple of years now,
- 1:27Speaker 3: a couple of off seasons, especially you got to find
- 1:30Speaker 3: a way to flip this switch. Now it's time to compete.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Now you're not tanking. Now you're not maximizing draft position.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Now you're not manipulating your lineup to make sure that
- 1:39Speaker 3: you're getting young players to develop, but also that actually
- 1:42Speaker 3: trying to win games. and you get to put the
- 1:45Speaker 3: foot on the gas pedal and actually go. What kind
- 1:47Speaker 3: of relief is this coaching staff feeling right now that
- 1:50Speaker 3: they don't have to do any of that tomfoolery and
- 1:52Speaker 3: they just get to coach what we hope is winning basketball?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, very much. Right now, they're very happy about now.
- 2:00Speaker 1: This is a direction that there's no more rebuilding, that
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Jazz have a bunch of young guys that have
- 2:06Speaker 1: some experience and then some veterans led by Larry Markin
- 2:12Speaker 1: and Jaron Jackson and Yusuf Nurkic and Keontae George. So
- 2:17Speaker 1: they're going to try to blend both of them. So
- 2:19Speaker 1: the coaching staff is ready to go, as always, with
- 2:22Speaker 1: the Jazz. They can score the ball. And they have
- 2:25Speaker 1: a multi-talented group of people that are offensive-minded. Now, as always,
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Jazz, the last two years, they've struggled defensively. So
- 2:34Speaker 1: they've got to correct that. And I'm sure starting today
- 2:36Speaker 1: at 10 o'clock this morning local time, the Jazz are
- 2:39Speaker 1: working on defensive drills and, more importantly, accountability. So if
- 2:43Speaker 1: the Jazz go forward this season, it's all based on offensively.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And they keep scoring the ball at a high percentage defensively.
- 2:54Speaker 1: But defensively, can they guard the ball initially and also
- 2:58Speaker 1: guard the basket? Just quickly, last year, reference point, the
- 3:02Speaker 1: Jazz are 30 in the NBA last as far as
- 3:05Speaker 1: most points allowed to get the most three-point shots up
- 3:08Speaker 1: in the NBA and with at least shots as far
- 3:12Speaker 1: as blocked at the rim in the NBA. So they've
- 3:14Speaker 1: got to correct it. And I know that they're talking
- 3:17Speaker 1: about it all the time, and now it starts right
- 3:19Speaker 1: now today.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Who are the.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Players you expect to spearhead that defensive effort, Gordy? You
- 3:24Speaker 3: don't have Walker Kessler anymore who, when healthy, you thought
- 3:27Speaker 3: could be kind of an elite rim protector, but he's
- 3:29Speaker 3: not going to solve your problems out on the perimeter
- 3:31Speaker 3: with allowing too many three-point shots.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So it's not just a one-man job.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Who are the players that you expect maybe this coaching
- 3:38Speaker 3: staff will focus on or maybe they personally will take
- 3:40Speaker 3: it under their own responsibility to improve this team defensively?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Who are going to be the leaders there?
- 3:52Speaker 1: He's got to get better. He's number one. Also, Larry Markkinen,
- 3:57Speaker 1: who can score the ball offensively. He's a tremendous talent.
- 4:02Speaker 1: He's got to be able to guard his position. That's
- 4:04Speaker 1: both at small forward, and I'll call him stretch forward,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and maybe a quasi-five man. When they go ultra-small, they
- 4:11Speaker 1: play him at five. So those two guys, Ace Bailey,
- 4:14Speaker 1: who's got innate athletic talent, he has to get better
- 4:17Speaker 1: as far as and also Yusuf Nurkic. I know he
- 4:22Speaker 1: can't foul just, you know, he starts fouling sometimes on
- 4:25Speaker 1: layup lines. That's how crazy it is. So he's got
- 4:29Speaker 1: to be able to just be, as always, just like
- 4:33Speaker 1: in the NFL, how can I be physical with technique?
- 4:37Speaker 1: That's the question for Yusuf Nurkic and all the other
- 4:41Speaker 1: big guys. And the big guys are Jackson Hayes and
- 4:44Speaker 1: Mo Bamba and Kyle Filipowski. And then Jaron Jackson, all
- 4:48Speaker 1: five of those guys, can they play interior defense without
- 4:52Speaker 1: dramatically fouling? And so that's what's going to, those are
- 4:55Speaker 1: the main guys have to do it quickly. The Jazz
- 4:58Speaker 1: added two guys though, defensive minded from new newcomers, Josh
- 5:03Speaker 1: Okoji and Josh Green. And both those guys, their MO
- 5:08Speaker 1: is defense. It's defensive as far as on off ball.
- 5:11Speaker 1: So they should improve the Jazz defense, especially in the
- 5:14Speaker 1: second unit.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Gordy Chiesa is our guest, talking a little Utah Jazz,
- 5:18Speaker 3: about three weeks ahead of the season, tipping off here
- 5:21Speaker 3: in the NBA NHL season.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Puck drops this week.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Thursday night, Delta Center, Utah Mammoth versus Chicago Blackhawks, and
- 5:30Speaker 3: then the Jazz will be right behind them. We've seen
- 5:34Speaker 3: kind of a breakout year from Keontae George, and he
- 5:37Speaker 3: got paid for it. And there was some question about
- 5:40Speaker 3: whether or not this deal was going to get done
- 5:42Speaker 3: before the season, whether it was going to be something
- 5:45Speaker 3: that we had to wait for. How does it change
- 5:47Speaker 3: the dynamic between players, coaches, teammates, et cetera, now that
- 5:52Speaker 3: everyone knows, all right, Keontae, you earned this and you
- 5:55Speaker 3: got paid. What does it do to change, I guess,
- 5:58Speaker 3: his relationship in the room?
- 6:04Speaker 1: He's a top dog. He has the ball in the
- 6:06Speaker 1: game as far as a point guard. It's his fourth season,
- 6:09Speaker 1: and the Jazz, they developed him, and now it's time
- 6:13Speaker 1: for him to help the franchise as far as winning.
- 6:16Speaker 1: And he can. He's been a tremendous metaphor for us
- 6:19Speaker 1: in his personality as far as him really being team-orientated.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So it's fascinating how it's his development. And he's a
- 6:28Speaker 1: very talented offensive player. I mentioned his defense is going
- 6:32Speaker 1: to be a concern. His quickly, his contract, all the listeners,
- 6:35Speaker 1: he makes this year still $ 6. 5 million. That's the old contract.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Next year, 27-28, that's when it kicks in. $ 27. 1 million, $ 28. 29, $ 29. 3 million, $ 29. 30, $ 31. 5 million, $ 30. 31, $ 33. 6 million,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and then $ 31. 32.
- 6:47Speaker 4: $ 35. 8 million.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So I said that purposely because he's their guy now.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So there's no gray area. As they go forward, he's
- 7:07Speaker 1: going to be the main guy along with his trusted sidekick,
- 7:09Speaker 1: young fella, Darren Peterson, and Ace Bailey. So when the
- 7:13Speaker 1: players should look at him as them being their team leader,
- 7:17Speaker 1: both on the court... but also his contract in place.
- 7:21Speaker 1: So there's no like, you're not respecting me. Yes, we are.
- 7:25Speaker 1: We paid you. Now it's time for you to play well,
- 7:27Speaker 1: especially as the Jets try to attempt to make the
- 7:30Speaker 1: playoffs this year.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Take me inside what a film session is like, what
- 7:35Speaker 3: a coaching conversation is like when you have somebody like
- 7:38Speaker 3: Darren Peterson on the roster.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Because this is a guy that.
- 7:43Speaker 3: People say his ceiling is Kobe Bryant, his floor is
- 7:46Speaker 3: also pretty darn high. And You want to make sure
- 7:49Speaker 3: you develop him the right way. You don't want to
- 7:51Speaker 3: hold him back, but you don't want to push him
- 7:53Speaker 3: too hard. How are the coaches handling that as you
- 7:57Speaker 3: get training camp started?
- 8:01Speaker 1: They are going to be on him in a good
- 8:03Speaker 1: way because he wants to be coached up. And so
- 8:08Speaker 1: he's a major talent. You're talking like Kobe Bryant type talent.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So he has the ability to score the ball on
- 8:18Speaker 1: his own. He's like a rocket ship himself. He's almost
- 8:21Speaker 1: a combination, Sean, of potentially like Kobe Bryant and like
- 8:26Speaker 1: Dwayne Wade. He's a guard. He's not a point guard.
- 8:29Speaker 1: So when we say point guard, we mean somebody that
- 8:32Speaker 1: tries to get everybody involved, initiate the offense. He's a
- 8:36Speaker 1: scoring talent with passing skills, and that's good. That's who
- 8:40Speaker 1: he is, and do not change him. And so during
- 8:43Speaker 1: film sessions and during team practices, they're going to accelerate
- 8:47Speaker 1: his progress. They're going to let him be who he is,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but also have accountability of moving the ball. Like all
- 8:56Speaker 1: young players, they over-dribble. So in practice, I'm sure they're
- 9:00Speaker 1: emphasizing moving the ball. And on the second side of
- 9:02Speaker 1: the floor, that's a great chance for you to go
- 9:05Speaker 1: organize one-on-one. And that's the catch word, being organized as
- 9:08Speaker 1: a group. So, Sean, he should start moving. You know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: there'll be ups and downs like all rookies, whether it's
- 9:14Speaker 1: the NBA or the NFL, because the game is so
- 9:17Speaker 1: fast now. And suddenly you're guarding people that also have
- 9:20Speaker 1: major talent. But he's part of the future. Jaron Jackson
- 9:25Speaker 1: also is part of the future. And he's a veteran.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And in film shots, he's a new player. I knew
- 9:30Speaker 1: he was there last year. He only played three games.
- 9:32Speaker 1: But also they're going to focus in on him because
- 9:35Speaker 1: he has to help them both offensively and defensively. So
- 9:38Speaker 1: the Jazz basketball, it's really a bright future. So the
- 9:42Speaker 1: question is always this, it's who you play against. So
- 9:45Speaker 1: out here in the West, you know, there's a thing
- 9:48Speaker 1: called the San Antonio Spurs, OKC Thunder, the Denver Nuggets,
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Houston Rockets, the Timberwolves. with now Anthony Edwards and
- 10:02Speaker 1: LaMelo Ball as a group right now, the Jazz will
- 10:05Speaker 1: be challenged to try to catch those guys in the standings.
- 10:10Speaker 3: For several years now, Lowry Markkinen has been your best
- 10:13Speaker 3: player with the Utah Jazz. Does this organization want that
- 10:16Speaker 3: to remain true in the 2026-2027 season?
- 10:24Speaker 1: No. They want Darren Peterson eventually and Ace Bailey because
- 10:28Speaker 1: they have more talent. The NBA is a talent league.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Larry Malkin does have talent. That's not my issue saying that.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But these other guys have just more innate talent. athleticism, bounciness.
- 10:43Speaker 1: They can create their own shots. Well, Larry Malkin is
- 10:46Speaker 1: a mismatch offensive because of his skill set. But the
- 10:50Speaker 1: other guys have talent. Now, Larry Malkin, if I was
- 10:52Speaker 1: counseling him, he has the ability to score with this group,
- 10:56Speaker 1: score between 21 to 23 points a game, and that
- 11:01Speaker 1: would be wonderful. And then Darren Peterson and Keontae George
- 11:04Speaker 1: and Jaron Jackson and Yusuf Nurkic and an ace barely
- 11:08Speaker 1: off the bench, probably. I was asked this question shortly
- 11:11Speaker 1: earlier today by a colleague of mine back east in
- 11:13Speaker 1: the NBA. I'm saying the Jets are probably going to
- 11:15Speaker 1: start Keontae George at one, Darren Peterson at two, Larry
- 11:20Speaker 1: Markin at, I'll call him a small forward, at three.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Stretch forward, Jaron Jackson, and five, the Bosnian bully, Yusuf Nurkic.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And off the bench, Isaiah Kalia, Ace Bailey, Bryce Sensible,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Kyle Filipowski, and probably Jackson Hayes. That's the jazz 10
- 11:41Speaker 1: guys as far as in the rotation as of today,
- 11:44Speaker 1: birthday of practice.
- 11:47Speaker 3: It's easy to, you know, to, to get so focused
- 11:50Speaker 3: on Darren Peterson that you kind of like let Ace Bailey,
- 11:54Speaker 3: at least as a fan become more of an afterthought,
- 11:56Speaker 3: but he's obviously going to be massive for this franchise
- 11:59Speaker 3: in the future. What, What does he need to develop?
- 12:02Speaker 3: What is the next step for him heading into this year?
- 12:07Speaker 1: Defensively, when you're a true guard or a small foot
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the NBA, you're guarding some of the best players
- 12:13Speaker 1: in the world on a weekly situation every night. And so, again, offensively,
- 12:21Speaker 1: as I always talk about it, do not try to
- 12:23Speaker 1: outscore the opposition. Try to outplay them. And within that,
- 12:27Speaker 1: you're going to score points. So Ace Bailey has the
- 12:30Speaker 1: ability to, again, the average would say as a six-man starter.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'll call him a starter as a six-man. He has
- 12:37Speaker 1: the ability to score in his second season, right? And
- 12:39Speaker 1: let's not forget, he just turned 20 this past August 13th.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So his development will be defensively, moving his feet, playing
- 12:49Speaker 1: aggressive defense without overly fouling, being able to win mismatched
- 12:53Speaker 1: rebounds against someone that outweighs you by 15%. 60 pounds,
- 12:58Speaker 1: not as far as height, but as far as strength
- 13:00Speaker 1: in the lane. And so he's got to be able
- 13:03Speaker 1: to get leverage. In all sports, Sean, who has the leverage?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Who has more leverage in the game as far as
- 13:09Speaker 1: using your legs and your hips to be able to
- 13:14Speaker 1: create balance versus mismatches where people have more strength than you,
- 13:19Speaker 1: but you have better leverage at that split second. That's Bailey.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Tremendous young talent, though.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Gordon Chiesa for another minute or two here on the
- 13:29Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell Show. The last time we had you on,
- 13:33Speaker 3: we had not yet achieved full resolution of the Kawhi
- 13:37Speaker 3: Leonard situation.
- 13:38Speaker 2: The trade hadn't gone all the way through.
- 13:40Speaker 3: The Steve Ballmer suspension and punishment was still kind.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Of up in the air.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Did that Clippers situation get resolved in a way that
- 13:48Speaker 3: best serves all parties?
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely. The Clippers blatantly... Circuit vented the salary cap rules.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Everybody knew it. The NBA did the right thing. They
- 14:01Speaker 1: were patient. They hired an outside counsel, and they investigated
- 14:06Speaker 1: it through and through. And so, again, Sean, you can't
- 14:11Speaker 1: be doing that as far as giving, quote, side deals
- 14:15Speaker 1: like it's the JV. This is the NBA. Everybody knows
- 14:19Speaker 1: each other's business. You might interpret it differently, but this
- 14:23Speaker 1: is how it happened. And so, but listen quickly, that
- 14:26Speaker 1: they were, the owner was suspended for a whole year.
- 14:29Speaker 1: They suspended the president for a whole year. They suspended
- 14:32Speaker 1: Lawrence Frank for half a season. And worse than that, though,
- 14:36Speaker 1: they forfeited five first-round draft picks each year from 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and 2033. So, it's one of the worst punishments of all,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and hopefully that will just make everyone else pause if
- 14:55Speaker 1: they think they can pull one over on the rest
- 14:57Speaker 1: of the college. Remember, the NBA owners are very smart people.
- 15:01Speaker 1: They're all billionaires. They innately understand business, and when someone
- 15:06Speaker 1: does something that's really bad for the business model, they responded.
- 15:09Speaker 1: And the NBA league office, they actually did the right thing.
- 15:13Speaker 1: They were patient, and now it's over.
- 15:16Speaker 2: We saw.
- 15:17Speaker 3: We got the first glimpse of LeBron James in that
- 15:20Speaker 3: Philadelphia 76ers uniform with the fully shaved head, you know,
- 15:25Speaker 3: another season for one of the all-time greats, another new
- 15:29Speaker 3: franchise for LeBron James. Obviously, we'll adjust our expectations as
- 15:34Speaker 3: the season progresses and we see what health looks like
- 15:37Speaker 3: for not only LeBron, but for Joel Embiid. But your
- 15:40Speaker 3: first blush prediction for Philadelphia with LeBron on that roster.
- 15:46Speaker 1: He'll be a major force. His risk is showing right now.
- 15:50Speaker 1: He turns 42 on December 30th. This is his 24th
- 15:54Speaker 1: season playing NBA basketball. So he's the most ever, most
- 16:00Speaker 1: talented player. ever to play this long with Michael Jordan
- 16:04Speaker 1: being number one, but played a much shorter lifespan. LeBron's
- 16:09Speaker 1: 24th season. Let's put it in context. John Stockton played
- 16:12Speaker 1: 19 great years, and Karl Malone played 19 great years.
- 16:16Speaker 1: This guy's playing 24, hopefully in his world, great years.
- 16:19Speaker 1: All right, 76ers. They lost in the second round last year, Sean,
- 16:22Speaker 1: to Knickerbockers. Yikes. They lost four games to zero, got
- 16:26Speaker 1: punched in the face. So now they add it. The
- 16:29Speaker 1: Sixers added LeBron. They added Jalen Brown from the Celtics.
- 16:33Speaker 1: They added Dean Wade from the Cavs. He's an outside shooter.
- 16:37Speaker 1: He has a stretch. I'll call him Stretch Big. And
- 16:39Speaker 1: he added Inferno Simons. And he added Katavius Cole-Pope. To
- 16:45Speaker 1: go along with Therese Maxey, who's a tremendous all-star, young
- 16:50Speaker 1: BJ Edgecombe, and often injured Joel Embiid. That's the question mark.
- 16:56Speaker 1: So the Sixers should be right there in the East
- 16:59Speaker 1: going against the Knickerbockers who are defending world champions. Again,
- 17:03Speaker 1: it should be fascinating. There's so many in the NBA
- 17:06Speaker 1: incredible stories of what I call the great unknown, where
- 17:11Speaker 1: if so-and-so plays great or injured, what happens? That's the
- 17:15Speaker 1: great unknown.
- 17:16Speaker 3: A lot of guys, interesting guys in new spots or
- 17:20Speaker 3: guys coming off injuries like Tyrese Halliburton. Is he back
- 17:24Speaker 3: to full health, and if he is, are the Pacers
- 17:26Speaker 3: suddenly a factor in the East again?
- 17:28Speaker 1: Yes, they are, very much. They have a tremendous organization there.
- 17:34Speaker 1: Those guys do a great job for the last, literally,
- 17:36Speaker 1: 40 years. Indiana Pacers, very similar to the Jets, and
- 17:39Speaker 1: the Spurs, and the Thunder, quote, small market team. They
- 17:44Speaker 1: have a whole bunch of guys for the last decades
- 17:47Speaker 1: that all play as a unit. So the Indiana Pacers
- 17:52Speaker 1: will be contending also. They'll be in the top five
- 17:55Speaker 1: or six. And again, in the playoffs, it's who you
- 17:58Speaker 1: play against that first, second round. And that's what's really humbling.
- 18:02Speaker 1: So they'll be a factor, the Pacers. Speaking of a factor, Sean,
- 18:07Speaker 1: today's our first list of the year. And I thought
- 18:10Speaker 1: about you for the last two months, Sean. which is interesting,
- 18:14Speaker 1: me thinking about you to get my drift.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 18:17Speaker 1: All right, Sean, here we go. The all-time best left-handed
- 18:21Speaker 1: NBA players. If he listens right now, Sean is left-handed.
- 18:28Speaker 1: So I want to have this first list, Sean, to
- 18:30Speaker 1: honor people like you. All these standouts are lefties living
- 18:35Speaker 1: in a right-handed world, just like you, Sean. So besides
- 18:40Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell, other former people that we all know and
- 18:45Speaker 1: we all know that are left-handed is former presidents Barack Obama,
- 18:51Speaker 1: Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and NFL greats Steve Young
- 18:58Speaker 1: and Kenny the Snake Stabler. These people are all left-handed.
- 19:03Speaker 1: So here we go. My first list of the new season,
- 19:06Speaker 1: all-time greatest lefty NBA players. Number 15, Billy Cunningham, Hall
- 19:11Speaker 1: of Fame. Number 14, Jalen Brunson, future Hall of Famer,
- 19:17Speaker 1: NBA champions, New York Knicks. Number 13, Chris Mullen, Hall
- 19:21Speaker 1: of Fame. Number 12, Gail Gurvich, Hall of Fame. Number 11,
- 19:27Speaker 1: Bob Lanier, Hall of Fame. Number 10, The A-Train, Artis Gilmore,
- 19:32Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. Number nine, we all love this guy,
- 19:36Speaker 1: Manu Ginobili, Hall of Fame. Number eight, Chris Bosh, Hall
