- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The rex was
- 0:06Speaker 2: not chasing the jeep.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Murray, Murray, you there. You love sandwiches. Huh, let's go
- 0:11Speaker 1: to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: He was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening just to Gatton Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He is the co host of Don Han and Rosenberg
- 0:34Speaker 2: on ESPN New York MSG Network nix Adalys since twenty eleven,
- 0:40Speaker 2: and maybe the greatest head of hair anywhere it's sports media.
- 0:44Speaker 2: He is Alan Hankind enough to join us right now.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Why are you laughing? You have one of the great.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Heads of you know, head of hairs in the history
- 0:51Speaker 2: of sports media.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You know that.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I'll take it, But today's not a great day because
- 0:56Speaker 4: it's literally wet from humidity in New York and and
- 1:00Speaker 4: you know, getting off for treadmill and all the other
- 1:03Speaker 4: stuff that goes with it. Not much sleep. But I'll
- 1:06Speaker 4: take I'll take it. I'll definitely take it. But I
- 1:08Speaker 4: give a lot of credit to the ESPN hair and
- 1:10Speaker 4: makeup people. Now the show, you guys know how that works.
- 1:13Speaker 5: He woke up like this, this is every day.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I can show you a picture of my daughter putting
- 1:19Speaker 4: rollers in my hair the other night and told me.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Your hair will be nice and wavy. Daddy, and I
- 1:24Speaker 3: slept in him.
- 1:25Speaker 4: I took him out, and I'm telling you, I you
- 1:26Speaker 4: remember Mike Brady had the had the froges, Yeah, the
- 1:30Speaker 4: perm Yeah, that's what I looked like. And I thought,
- 1:32Speaker 4: I can't pull this.
- 1:33Speaker 5: So you're missing out on a lot of good content.
- 1:35Speaker 1: You got to put that.
- 1:36Speaker 5: On on social somewhere when your in the rollers right.
- 1:41Speaker 1: With this kid, I mean today's world.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm surprised they didn't put it on social.
- 1:46Speaker 4: They got me after after the Knicks one Saturday night,
- 1:49Speaker 4: and I was a caged animal because they had us
- 1:51Speaker 4: in the studio in New York, and you know, so
- 1:54Speaker 4: we were a two and a half hour show we
- 1:55Speaker 4: did because of all the interviews and everything that was
- 1:57Speaker 4: going on in San Antonio, and my kids were at
- 2:00Speaker 4: one of the latch parties, so they all came down
- 2:02Speaker 4: to meet me and I went out on seventh Avenue
- 2:05Speaker 4: and you know, totally just awkward, fifty year old man
- 2:10Speaker 4: amongst people celebrating, and I did the wee outside.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Yeah, they recorded it, and I'm like, I'm dead, this
- 2:18Speaker 3: will live with forever, but yeah, they like to embarrass me.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Alan.
- 2:23Speaker 2: How many hours have you slept since the next won
- 2:26Speaker 2: the championship? Like, how many hours do you imagine you've
- 2:29Speaker 2: slept here consecutively?
- 2:32Speaker 4: My whoop told me, I think that one night the
- 2:35Speaker 4: most I got was four wow. So so when I
- 2:39Speaker 4: came back from I got home after Saturday night, it
- 2:43Speaker 4: might have been about it was about five am or so,
- 2:47Speaker 4: and by then the kids were kind of shot. They
- 2:49Speaker 4: all went to bed, and I'm like, I need costumigos
- 2:53Speaker 4: and I need to float on the pool and I
- 2:54Speaker 4: need to realize that this is this really happened. And
- 2:57Speaker 4: once I like, it didn't hit me until that moment
- 3:00Speaker 4: and just sitting there just like it has happened, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 4: the Hamilton line, the world's turned upside down?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yes, did you start to think that it would never happen?
- 3:11Speaker 3: Oh? I always.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I always had that in the back of my mind,
- 3:14Speaker 4: the thought of like will I ever see this in
- 3:17Speaker 4: my lifetime? You know, things that happened, and most recently
- 3:21Speaker 4: that Haliburton bounce, Like that Haliburton bounce was the one
- 3:25Speaker 4: that kind of gutted me a little bit, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 4: like that one right just because I was on the court.
- 3:30Speaker 4: We were about to rush the court because the game
- 3:33Speaker 4: should have ended on that miss, and then I'd have
- 3:35Speaker 4: an interview to do and if we go and it
- 3:38Speaker 4: bounced straight up, so I had like the straight on
- 3:40Speaker 4: look and it's straight up, and I'm going if that
- 3:42Speaker 4: comes straight down, and I did, And so those are moments,
- 3:47Speaker 4: you know that, and I know, be getting hurt the
- 3:49Speaker 4: year before, and then Brunston getting hurt, everybody got hurt,
- 3:53Speaker 4: and it just kept feeling like I might never never
- 3:57Speaker 4: see this. My parents were Rangers fans and ninety four,
- 4:01Speaker 4: like I didn't understand what ninety four and the Rangers
- 4:04Speaker 4: won the Stanley Cup, ending fifty four years.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I didn't understand it.
- 4:07Speaker 4: I wasn't a Rangers fan until you know, just now,
- 4:11Speaker 4: like they had champagne, they popped that. They were so excited,
- 4:14Speaker 4: never seen him happier, and so now I kind of
- 4:17Speaker 4: understand it because they also had that feeling that they
- 4:20Speaker 4: would have never never would see it.
- 4:22Speaker 3: In their lifetime.
- 4:22Speaker 4: And when Sam Rose in the great MSG Networks announcers said,
- 4:26Speaker 4: and this one will last a lifetime, a lot of
- 4:28Speaker 4: Ranger fans are like.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Doesn't have to.
- 4:31Speaker 4: It's like when I say to Bart Scott when he said,
- 4:33Speaker 4: can't wait after beating the Patriots, and.
- 4:36Speaker 3: I said, Bart, still waiting?
- 4:38Speaker 6: You know.
- 4:41Speaker 4: So those are all the emotions you start feeling that
- 4:43Speaker 4: that come around. But I did get to see you
- 4:45Speaker 4: with my own eyes and as one as people say
- 4:48Speaker 4: all the time, now I can die in peace.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Yes, And this is first a statement and then a question.
- 4:54Speaker 6: I spent countless nights with you, Bill Pedo, Wally Zerbiak,
- 4:59Speaker 6: I absolutely you guys. I spent more time with you
- 5:01Speaker 6: guys than some people in my own family. Will you
- 5:04Speaker 6: also hang the NBA Cup banner?
- 5:08Speaker 4: It's what you know, I'll see. I'm petty because I
- 5:12Speaker 4: thought like at that point, hang them all like they
- 5:15Speaker 4: normally when you win in the NBA Championship, you don't
- 5:17Speaker 4: need to hang the Eastern Conference champions because it's it's
- 5:21Speaker 4: implied I might the hell with that, I'm hanging all
- 5:24Speaker 4: of them. Put the NBA Cup up there, Put the
- 5:26Speaker 4: Eastern Conference up there. Put the NBA Championship on up there.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Put them all out there just to be petty. You know,
- 5:31Speaker 4: I'd leave a spotlight on that thing too. I put
- 5:33Speaker 4: a special spotlight on it, like just uh yeah. I
- 5:36Speaker 4: think it's funny that that that celebration back in December
- 5:40Speaker 4: was so muted, and some people had that snicker about
- 5:43Speaker 4: them of like, you know, only title you'll ever see
- 5:45Speaker 4: that kind of stuff, And you know the thought of, no,
- 5:48Speaker 4: we're not hanging a banner like that, this is not
- 5:51Speaker 4: our goal. But now that you've swept everything, you might
- 5:54Speaker 4: as well. I'll never forget being in La. We were
- 5:58Speaker 4: it was Nick Lakers. I was calling the game, and
- 6:00Speaker 4: I remember being there when they revealed the it was
- 6:04Speaker 4: the nd season Tournament at the time, banner, and I
- 6:07Speaker 4: remember walking, you know that that tunnel that leads to
- 6:09Speaker 4: the lakeror locker room.
- 6:10Speaker 3: The floor had.
- 6:11Speaker 4: A whole painting decal of the NBA Cup or the
- 6:16Speaker 4: nd season tournament. They had a big and I remember
- 6:19Speaker 4: taking a picture of it going but this is an
- 6:21Speaker 4: extra but they're really celebrating it. And that's why I said.
- 6:25Speaker 4: So the Lakers really went all in when they won THEIRS,
- 6:27Speaker 4: but the Knicks were like this is not what we're
- 6:29Speaker 4: here for. But now that now that you've swept everything, hell, yah,
- 6:32Speaker 4: i'd put the better up.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Yes, I'm curious because I'm kind of jealous because you know,
- 6:37Speaker 5: like when I was covering the Heat and they won
- 6:39Speaker 5: their championship and I had to like pretend I didn't
- 6:41Speaker 5: like them, right, because as a newspaper guy, when you
- 6:46Speaker 5: got lucky enough to sort of just turn it on
- 6:48Speaker 5: and just be like, hey, it helps me for people
- 6:51Speaker 5: to know that I am a fan of this team,
- 6:53Speaker 5: and I am a local, you know, and I grew
- 6:56Speaker 5: up watching these teams.
- 6:57Speaker 3: It's it's you know what.
- 6:58Speaker 4: That's such a great point is because when I translated,
- 7:02Speaker 4: I went from newspaper beat writer covering the team, and
- 7:08Speaker 4: when I moved into the studio as a studio italists,
- 7:11Speaker 4: my first couple of years, I was still stuck in
- 7:13Speaker 4: this journalistic integrity and you know, down the middle and.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Think I watched it and I wanted to report.
- 7:21Speaker 4: I wanted to report, and you know what, you know
- 7:23Speaker 4: what changed it all. The moment that changed it all
- 7:26Speaker 4: was Jeremy Lynn, really, because insanity was such a holy
- 7:31Speaker 4: crap moment, like, as it's happening that you can't possibly
- 7:36Speaker 4: go open a postgame show and just say, you know,
- 7:39Speaker 4: an excellent performance thirty eight points against the Lakers on
- 7:42Speaker 4: a Friday night.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And hell no, I was like, We've.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Never say anything like this, Like this is incredible. And
- 7:47Speaker 4: so the enthusiasm that I had for the moment, and
- 7:50Speaker 4: I thought it was appropriate because I wasn't like, you know,
- 7:53Speaker 4: waving pomp poms and cheering, but I was just showing
- 7:56Speaker 4: enthusiasm for the moment. The reception that got told me
- 8:00Speaker 4: it's okay to show that you were moved by a
- 8:04Speaker 4: performance or that you love the game, because I love
- 8:06Speaker 4: the game, and so little by little I started to
- 8:09Speaker 4: realize that. And then of course there was this pocket
- 8:12Speaker 4: of seven years where you know, and Taylor, I'm going
- 8:14Speaker 4: to ask you because if you were with us for
- 8:16Speaker 4: all these years, we have this thing. Now, this is
- 8:19Speaker 4: how you show credibility. Give me a strange pull of
- 8:21Speaker 4: a nick player that you rooted for, Give me some
- 8:24Speaker 4: name that's like random that you rooted for, and I'll
- 8:28Speaker 4: know if, like, what's your credibility? Because we had to
- 8:31Speaker 4: call some years where it's like Langston Galloway is not
- 8:33Speaker 4: a poet from the eighteen hundreds, he's an actual NBA player.
- 8:38Speaker 1: It could be a great name for a poet. Though
- 8:39Speaker 1: from the.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Name.
- 8:42Speaker 6: My go to guy has always been Alonzo Trier because
- 8:46Speaker 6: I really thought Alonzo Trier was going to be the
- 8:48Speaker 6: guy that saved us.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, I thought.
- 8:51Speaker 4: I thought, you know what, They put him at point guard.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Coincidentally enough in San Antonio, and I said to open
- 8:57Speaker 4: a season and I'm like, you know what he could
- 8:59Speaker 4: be special is a point guard.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And then by the first quarter I'm like, yep, no,
- 9:02Speaker 3: that's not.
- 9:03Speaker 2: It right away, but Taylor passed the test there, that
- 9:08Speaker 2: little test.
- 9:09Speaker 3: You came like, yeah, Alonzo Trier is a great bull.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Love that one.
- 9:13Speaker 2: How happy are you that you no longer have to
- 9:15Speaker 2: talk about lyn Sanity or Reggie Miller ever?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Again? I mean.
- 9:20Speaker 3: There's a yeah, there's a lot of that.
- 9:21Speaker 4: There's a and it's funny because you know and and
- 9:25Speaker 4: are you know my Jets background is a lot of
- 9:27Speaker 4: that stuff where it's it's great moments but not championship moments,
- 9:32Speaker 4: right sure, But and so you're still living off of
- 9:34Speaker 4: things from the past that weren't exactly they didn't lead
- 9:37Speaker 4: you to a championship. But John Starks is dunk and
- 9:40Speaker 4: lj's four point playing, Allen Houston's running jumper, sorry is he?
- 9:44Speaker 4: And and those moments, you know, like you felt like, okay,
- 9:48Speaker 4: those are this generation's moments to hold on to.
- 9:51Speaker 3: But every one of those years ended in a loss.
- 9:53Speaker 4: The ogn and ob tip now is an iconic play
- 9:57Speaker 4: that led to a championship, And so those are the
- 10:00Speaker 4: moments you can now hold on to and be like
- 10:03Speaker 4: those those moments that you can really talk about with
- 10:07Speaker 4: a little more like I want to sy appreciate you go,
- 10:10Speaker 4: I want to take away from what LJ did and
- 10:12Speaker 4: when Alan did and when John and Ewings put back dunk,
- 10:15Speaker 4: like those are such in the time, great moments. But yeah,
- 10:19Speaker 4: I don't have to worry about Reggie in the eight
- 10:21Speaker 4: point nine seconds anymore. Like that's now all in the past.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Because right now, for the next twelve months, when you
- 10:28Speaker 4: talk about the Knicks, you talk about a champion.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yes, speaking of moments, was there a moment for you
- 10:33Speaker 2: where you said to yourself, you know what, like a
- 10:35Speaker 2: definitive moment where you said, hey, you know what, the
- 10:38Speaker 2: Knicks can win a championship this season.
- 10:43Speaker 4: I started to It's such a great question because believe
- 10:46Speaker 4: it or not. I started thinking it when they lost
- 10:50Speaker 4: last year because and I know I'm contradicting myself because
- 10:54Speaker 4: I said that that balance made me feel like I
- 10:56Speaker 4: might never see it right. But it was it was
- 10:59Speaker 4: shortly after that, you know, I'd heard about the players
- 11:02Speaker 4: and how mad they were about it and how determined
- 11:05Speaker 4: they were about getting there again. And as when we
- 11:10Speaker 4: started the season, I remember this thing. The Knicks went
- 11:13Speaker 4: to Abu Dhabi, they played the Sixers in those Abadabi games,
- 11:16Speaker 4: the preseason games, and I was like, so, they're gonna
- 11:19Speaker 4: be the first team on the court this season. And
- 11:22Speaker 4: I remember in ninety four pat Riley had that thing
- 11:25Speaker 4: where he opened practice at midnight in Charleston and said,
- 11:29Speaker 4: we want to be the first first team on the
- 11:31Speaker 4: court and the last team off. The Knicks held the
- 11:33Speaker 4: first practice of the NBA season, and so I said,
- 11:36Speaker 4: at that moment, they're going to be the first team on,
- 11:38Speaker 4: They're gonna be last team off, and we got to
- 11:40Speaker 4: see how this all plays out. When they won the
- 11:42Speaker 4: NBA Cup, I said, there's championship DNA in this team.
- 11:45Speaker 4: When they responded after the cup hangover and started to
- 11:49Speaker 4: get it back, you could just again keep seeing there's
- 11:52Speaker 4: something in this team that despite all the issues that
- 11:54Speaker 4: are going on and how they keep changing things and
- 11:58Speaker 4: from it was like whack them, moll with the players
- 11:59Speaker 4: who were unhappy and who you were dealing with, it
- 12:02Speaker 4: just felt like though they keep sticking together, it wasn't
- 12:07Speaker 4: falling apart like some places you've seen it happen. And
- 12:11Speaker 4: that's kind of when in my head I said, like,
- 12:13Speaker 4: this team just got to get on a run down
- 12:16Speaker 4: to one though still still had a little bit of doubt,
- 12:20Speaker 4: but sure it was a belief like in the back
- 12:23Speaker 4: of my mind, like if they're going to do it,
- 12:24Speaker 4: this has got to be the year the doors open,
- 12:27Speaker 4: the windows slightly open. But the truth of full belief
- 12:32Speaker 4: I had is the way they ended Game two, the
- 12:36Speaker 4: way they stole that game. Look on Michale Bridge's eyes.
- 12:39Speaker 4: We did an interview with him and he looks absolutely
- 12:41Speaker 4: possessed in that interview, and I said, other.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Winning this thing, Yeah, they're winning this thing now.
- 12:48Speaker 6: Allan Brunton is a lock for the Raptors at MSG.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Do you think anybody else on this team is going
- 12:53Speaker 6: to join them up there?
- 12:55Speaker 4: I mean again, not just I guess I might still
- 12:58Speaker 4: be drunk on the moment, but I would put all
- 12:59Speaker 4: five like, if you think about the Championship era, they're
- 13:04Speaker 4: all up there. You know, all those guys are up
- 13:07Speaker 4: there the Championship era. The only player who has his
- 13:09Speaker 4: number in the rafters that doesn't have a Championship is
- 13:12Speaker 4: Patrick Ewing. He does now he's on the staff, so
- 13:15Speaker 4: he's technically he's got his ring, but he's the only one,
- 13:19Speaker 4: and he's of course iconic player. But if you consider it,
- 13:23Speaker 4: each guy all have had a key moments and key
- 13:26Speaker 4: roles in this Championship. I do feel like there'll be
- 13:29Speaker 4: a time many years from now where we're having several
- 13:32Speaker 4: ceremonies and all five guys should be.
- 13:35Speaker 6: There now being around the team. What did the title
- 13:39Speaker 6: mean to Patrick Ewing?
- 13:41Speaker 4: I talked to him the other day, we had him
- 13:43Speaker 4: on our show, and he told an amazing story, and
- 13:47Speaker 4: I think this just shows you what it meant to him.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I mean the moment when Cophony town sought him out
- 13:52Speaker 4: and gave him a huge hug and the two.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Like, how great? Was that?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Amazing?
- 13:56Speaker 4: But I asked him for a backstory to it, because
- 13:58Speaker 4: clearly you guys have a relationship, what's the deal and
- 14:00Speaker 4: he said, I'd just kind of been texting him throughout
- 14:03Speaker 4: the year, helping him through stuff. Just give him my input.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Sometimes he seeks me out and that meant a lot
- 14:10Speaker 4: to me. And then he said, and I he addressed
- 14:13Speaker 4: the team before game four against Atlanta, when they were
- 14:17Speaker 4: down to one, he addressed the team. I said, what
- 14:19Speaker 4: did you tell him? He wouldn't tell us. He said,
- 14:21Speaker 4: that's private. But then he told me. In ninety nine
- 14:26Speaker 4: they lost both games in San Antonio. He had the
- 14:29Speaker 4: Achilles strain. He couldn't play, and he said he went
- 14:32Speaker 4: on the bus and he cried because he knew this
- 14:36Speaker 4: was probably my last chance and I can't help them.
- 14:38Speaker 4: And against Duncan and Robinson, you kind of needed Patrick Gey.
- 14:42Speaker 4: So the fact that a guy like it, as tough
- 14:44Speaker 4: as he is revealed that he went on the bus
- 14:46Speaker 4: by himself and cried, it kind of shows you. And
- 14:49Speaker 4: I just said, so you got tears of joy now?
- 14:51Speaker 4: And he said absolutely absolutely. And he goes and to
- 14:54Speaker 4: do it against the Spurs and to beat them for
- 14:56Speaker 4: one like they beat us, he said, yeah, makes it
- 14:59Speaker 4: even sweeter.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Goosebumps.
- 15:01Speaker 5: Alan, you mentioned the sort of wackam mall situation throughout
- 15:03Speaker 5: the year with different guys being unhappy. It kind of
- 15:06Speaker 5: reminded me of some of the things that he might
- 15:08Speaker 5: have learned Mike Brown might have learned under Steve Kirk
- 15:09Speaker 5: because it happened, you know, from Kerrn his years. I'm
- 15:13Speaker 5: curious what you thought, because it was a hell of
- 15:15Speaker 5: a pressure's eye, pressure ized.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Situation for Mike.
- 15:17Speaker 5: But what was the main difference from Dibbodeau to him
- 15:22Speaker 5: that allowed this team to break through?
- 15:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I think we saw it from the beginning.
- 15:26Speaker 4: They used the word collaboration when they were going through
- 15:30Speaker 4: the coaching search, and that was obviously the code word
- 15:33Speaker 4: for you know, Tom Debideaux was an old school task
- 15:37Speaker 4: master coach who was like, it's my way, we do
- 15:39Speaker 4: it my way. He wasn't into input from anyone. He
- 15:43Speaker 4: believed in his way. His way worked. It transformed the franchise.
- 15:47Speaker 4: They were a winner and elite team. They got to
- 15:49Speaker 4: the conference finals. They won fifty games in back to
- 15:51Speaker 4: back years, so he proved that he it works. But
- 15:56Speaker 4: to get over the top with a veteran team high
- 15:59Speaker 4: IQ veter and Team two. So these are guys that
- 16:01Speaker 4: all understand the game and have an opinion and they
- 16:04Speaker 4: wanted their opinion heard, and so they were looking for
- 16:08Speaker 4: somebody who was like that. And Mike Brown's time in
- 16:12Speaker 4: Golden State I think taught him a lot about that,
- 16:15Speaker 4: and that I think was important because if this was
- 16:17Speaker 4: a young team, you can't do collaboration with a young team.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Because this is a team of twenty eight, twenty nine
- 16:22Speaker 4: thirty year olds, guys in the league ten years who've
- 16:24Speaker 4: had success.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I think that is something that was a big part
- 16:27Speaker 3: of it.
- 16:27Speaker 4: But it doesn't mean that Mike Brown was walked all
- 16:30Speaker 4: over because he in the beginning was also I want
- 16:34Speaker 4: to play this way. Towns wasn't happy, heart wasn't happy,
- 16:37Speaker 4: and he was saying figure it out. But then little
- 16:40Speaker 4: by little, as other players came to him, Hey, you know, Josh,
- 16:43Speaker 4: I know you don't see it, but with the starting five,
- 16:47Speaker 4: he's just different. It's better for us to have him
- 16:49Speaker 4: out there. And so Mike's all right, all right, let's
- 16:52Speaker 4: take a look at it. And then Josh plays great
- 16:54Speaker 4: and he's like, oh, I had no idea. Town's talking
- 16:57Speaker 4: about play through me. I can pass, I can do
- 17:00Speaker 4: the yolked stuff. And it's like, well, we need you
- 17:03Speaker 4: on the corner. You're a spacer. That's how we we
- 17:05Speaker 4: need to open the middle up. And I wanted you
- 17:07Speaker 4: to be a spacer, but I can't stand still. If
- 17:09Speaker 4: I stand still, you know I want to move, so
- 17:11Speaker 4: the right Fine, we'll try you in the habit and
- 17:13Speaker 4: then it was like, oh crap, we didn't know you
- 17:15Speaker 4: could you know you were? Your passors are not only good,
- 17:17Speaker 4: they're on target, Like you're a really good passer. So
- 17:20Speaker 4: he had to also listen, try things out, learn from it,
- 17:24Speaker 4: deal with Jalen Brunson how to handle him, and then
- 17:27Speaker 4: his managing of the minutes. So I think the collaboration
- 17:30Speaker 4: part of it was important. You had to have an
- 17:32Speaker 4: experienced coach who didn't It wasn't a my way or
- 17:35Speaker 4: the highway type and that's literally what Mike Brown was
- 17:39Speaker 4: and it it It wasn't pretty, and it had its
- 17:42Speaker 4: ups and downs, but in the moment of truth, it
- 17:45Speaker 4: was at its best. And you can see that after
- 17:47Speaker 4: everything they've been through, the team really started to appreciate
- 17:51Speaker 4: and love him for who he was because he was
- 17:53Speaker 4: genuine and he There was a point, and I think
- 17:56Speaker 4: it was after Game two of the Finals where you
- 17:58Speaker 4: could see it in his eyes was just like this
- 18:01Speaker 4: is a special group. Like even he was caught like
- 18:04Speaker 4: like couldn't believe it, like like this is these guys
- 18:07Speaker 4: are killers.
- 18:08Speaker 3: And so it was a mutual appreciation.
- 18:10Speaker 1: By the end, you're making me like the Knicks. Now
- 18:13Speaker 1: this has happened, This has happened across the country. I
- 18:15Speaker 1: can't believe it. Underdog.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Yes, it's like I hate the Knicks, but I love
- 18:20Speaker 4: this team. That's kind of what has happened with this group.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yes, yes, very cool though right never the day more
- 18:27Speaker 2: people were happy that we wanted it would have been
- 18:30Speaker 2: of San Antonio.
- 18:32Speaker 4: This is not gonna last, man, you know why, because
- 18:34Speaker 4: we're going to be appropriate, appropriately, insufferable. And after a
- 18:38Speaker 4: while it's like, all right, I'm tired of New York.
- 18:39Speaker 4: I'm tired you guys.
- 18:40Speaker 2: You know, I'm just surprised it hasn't happened yet, to
- 18:44Speaker 2: be honest with you, if you were if we were
- 18:47Speaker 2: all pie charting, uh, and you know we were doing
- 18:50Speaker 2: guys who deserve whatever amount of of of of respect
- 18:55Speaker 2: or or a credit for getting this championship done.
- 18:58Speaker 1: You would put bruncht it in there.
- 19:00Speaker 2: He'd probably be more than fifty percent of the pie
- 19:02Speaker 2: and maybe Mike Brown, how much would you assign to
- 19:05Speaker 2: d Aaron Fox?
- 19:09Speaker 4: Did you see there was a great video fan, a
- 19:12Speaker 4: fan who went on NBA dot com and they created
- 19:16Speaker 4: a next jersey with Daron Fox on.
- 19:21Speaker 1: We should raise that to the rafters.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Like honestly, and I could hear the voice just going, yeah,
- 19:26Speaker 4: he's with us, like you know.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Like that, yeah, isn't it? Isn't it?
- 19:33Speaker 4: Kind of again more coincidences that Mike Brown kind of
- 19:36Speaker 4: got fired because he was critical of d Aaron Fox
- 19:39Speaker 4: after some late game, tough decisions in Sacramento, right.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Crazy, So it is amazing how all that stuff does
- 19:45Speaker 3: show itself.
- 19:46Speaker 4: But I think, you know Fox, not just him, but yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 4: that not dribbling the ball thing I'll never understand, right.
- 19:52Speaker 4: But also that team ran out of gas every fourth quarter, crazy,
- 19:56Speaker 4: every fourth quarter. Dylan Harper was great in the first half,
- 19:59Speaker 4: look at his numbers in the second half, couldn't make
- 20:01Speaker 4: free throws when manya'ma nothing in the tank.
- 20:03Speaker 3: The only game they.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Won, they won because in that fourth quarter watch it back.
- 20:08Speaker 4: There were a million challenges, there were timeouts, there was stoppages,
- 20:11Speaker 4: and it allowed him to catch his breath like it
- 20:15Speaker 4: slowed the game down enough for them to have some
- 20:18Speaker 4: energy in their reserves, because in every other game, look
- 20:20Speaker 4: at them gassed in the last five minutes.
- 20:23Speaker 6: And when when you grow up and you're watching you know,
- 20:26Speaker 6: Damon Dotson and Iggy bris Dakis, I'm already thinking now,
- 20:34Speaker 6: I'm already thinking next year, at the very least, the
- 20:37Speaker 6: Knicks enter next season with continuity. What impact do you
- 20:41Speaker 6: think Giannis could have on the conference?
- 20:46Speaker 3: Well, I know a lot of talk is about him
- 20:48Speaker 3: going to Boston.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I need to see for what because I don't love
- 20:53Speaker 4: the idea of taking Brown off that team, right, you know,
- 20:57Speaker 4: I need to see what it looks like before I
- 20:59Speaker 4: start saying, well, they become the team. I think that's
- 21:02Speaker 4: why Vegas has the Celtics over the Knicks is just
- 21:04Speaker 4: simply because they'll be healthy with Tatum and you expect
- 21:08Speaker 4: some kind of revenge tour by that group.
- 21:11Speaker 3: You know, Joe Mozilla's maniaca.
- 21:13Speaker 4: I guarantee you he hate watched this whole series and
- 21:15Speaker 4: thinking of all the ways that we're not going to
- 21:17Speaker 4: do that. We're not gonna do what the Spurs are
- 21:19Speaker 4: doing there, Like he'll he'll know we didn't get a
- 21:21Speaker 4: shot at them. But if we get a shot at them.
- 21:23Speaker 4: This is all the things we're gonna do. But I
- 21:26Speaker 4: don't know the impact Giannis is gonna have if he
- 21:28Speaker 4: ends up in Miami. What's around him there and how's
- 21:31Speaker 4: that going to be built up. What I love, though,
- 21:33Speaker 4: is wherever he goes, if it's in the East, I'm
- 21:36Speaker 4: big on rivalries, like I love that stuff, So I
- 21:39Speaker 4: want to create that animosity. I know Boston's gonna be
- 21:43Speaker 4: like the first chance they get. We know the NBA
- 21:46Speaker 4: is probably going to have Boston at New York ban
- 21:48Speaker 4: or Raising ceremony, right, we know the NBA is gonna
- 21:50Speaker 4: walk that for Opening Night. Oh yeah, so that's I
- 21:54Speaker 4: love the drama of that. So if that happens wherever
- 21:57Speaker 4: he goes, I think with Indiana with hel and coming back,
- 22:01Speaker 4: that's another one that's gonna, you know, breathe life back
- 22:04Speaker 4: into a little bit of rivalry. I think it's important,
- 22:07Speaker 4: But I still need to see what you're giving up
- 22:09Speaker 4: for a player like him and how he fits, because
- 22:11Speaker 4: I don't know how Giannis really fits with the way
- 22:13Speaker 4: Boston plays, and I don't know if you want to
- 22:16Speaker 4: really disrupt the culture.
- 22:17Speaker 3: They have up there.
- 22:19Speaker 4: I am you know, I'm contractively obligated to hate the Celtics,
- 22:23Speaker 4: but it doesn't mean I don't have a heavy respect
- 22:25Speaker 4: for Joe Mizula and Brad Stevens and what they've done
- 22:28Speaker 4: there and what they've built there. And I can't imagine
- 22:30Speaker 4: that they're going to have there. They're not going to
- 22:33Speaker 4: have a response for next year.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Speaking of hatred, I was wondering I thought Tom Thibodeau
- 22:38Speaker 5: would be the most hateful watcher of this final series,
- 22:41Speaker 5: But then I'm starting to wonder if maybe he had
- 22:43Speaker 5: a you know, an affinity for some of these guys
- 22:45Speaker 5: and actually liked that they wanted.
- 22:47Speaker 1: What do you think Tom thought watching this?
- 22:49Speaker 4: Yeah, I heard I can't remember which player it was,
- 22:53Speaker 4: but there was a former player who had you know,
- 22:54Speaker 4: who was in touch with him, who did say that
- 22:57Speaker 4: he was really happy for the guys because he you know,
- 23:01Speaker 4: he did he had a relationship with Brunson, very close one.
- 23:04Speaker 4: He had a relationship with with Towns, a very close one.
- 23:07Speaker 4: You know, there were guys on that team that he
- 23:09Speaker 4: did care about, and of course, you know, care about
- 23:12Speaker 4: the what he built. You know, there is credit you
- 23:16Speaker 4: still have to get. It's again a New York story
- 23:19Speaker 4: Buck Showalter helped get the Yankees back on track and
- 23:23Speaker 4: get them to a team that was formidable, and then
- 23:26Speaker 4: he was fired in ninety five.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Replaced by Joe Tory. And Joe Tory was.
- 23:32Speaker 4: The older, experienced manager who could handle egos a little
- 23:37Speaker 4: more collaborative maybe, but also had that ability to be
- 23:40Speaker 4: stern when necessary, and he, you know, was able to
- 23:44Speaker 4: enjoy the fruits of the labor that Buck Showalter put
- 23:46Speaker 4: in the years before, and Buck Showalter always did the
- 23:49Speaker 4: same thing. You still have great admiration and joy in
- 23:51Speaker 4: knowing that you were part of that building process.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Alan, what did you make of James Dolan's speech to
- 23:57Speaker 2: the team five games remain?
- 23:59Speaker 1: With five games remain in the regular season, it worked.
- 24:02Speaker 4: I didn't know he had that side of him, to
- 24:04Speaker 4: be honest with you.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I thought it was the one that got me though.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Is the ten weeks thing? Ten weeks thing?
- 24:11Speaker 4: If there was a player that did it, God bless because.
- 24:17Speaker 1: He would be my wife favorite owner.
- 24:19Speaker 4: I mean, jeez, Like, like Ted, we all looked at
- 24:26Speaker 4: each other when we saw it. We were like, I
- 24:28Speaker 4: don't know if I could do ten weeks and I'm
- 24:31Speaker 4: just I'm just in the damn studio. But ten weeks
- 24:33Speaker 4: a long time. But I'll tell you what that night
- 24:37Speaker 4: after they won, or that morning whatever it was. Yes,
- 24:40Speaker 4: I mean if we have I can't do the math.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Now nine months from now, every single player celebrating the
- 24:47Speaker 4: birth of children. I know in New York there's going
- 24:51Speaker 4: to be a high capacity of Jalon's, so.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Many Jals in New York.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Quickly here, Yeah, we'll get you out of here in
- 25:03Speaker 2: just a second.
- 25:03Speaker 1: We appreciate the time. We know. What's a business for you?
- 25:06Speaker 2: What are you expecting at the parade tomorrow? What are
- 25:09Speaker 2: you expecting there?
- 25:11Speaker 4: Well, I think that they're they're they're thinking it might
- 25:13Speaker 4: be over a million people, and that would not surprised me.
- 25:17Speaker 4: You know, the Rangers pray ninety four, was it like
- 25:19Speaker 4: a half a million? The Giants pray in twenty twelve,
- 25:22Speaker 4: I think came close to a million. So I think
- 25:25Speaker 4: they're feeling like, you know, when you consider the Tri
- 25:27Speaker 4: State area and the ease that there is, I say
- 25:31Speaker 4: ease with a smirk on my face. But to get
- 25:34Speaker 4: into you know, Manhattan, as long as you're taking mass transit,
- 25:37Speaker 4: I just I feel like this is something everybody wants
- 25:40Speaker 4: to go to and you consider it. Tomorrow's a national holiday.
- 25:43Speaker 4: It's not just my birthday. It's also a national holiday.
- 25:46Speaker 4: You're gonna you just a four day wee can built in,
- 25:49Speaker 4: which is why the mayor decided to make it. Make
- 25:51Speaker 4: them wait, let's do it on Thursday and turn into
- 25:53Speaker 4: a four day weekend kind of celebrates. People will take
- 25:56Speaker 4: Thursday off, no problem. This, this will be This will
- 26:00Speaker 4: be quite the turnout. I'm really looking forward to it.
- 26:02Speaker 2: All right, well we'll get you out of here on
- 26:04Speaker 2: this note. We play a game around here. It's called
- 26:06Speaker 2: one table, okay, and so for the sake of this
- 26:09Speaker 2: particular game, it's Hans Steakhouse in New York City. All right,
- 26:13Speaker 2: all right, you have one table. You decide who gets
- 26:16Speaker 2: the table. You're you're the host and the owner of
- 26:19Speaker 2: this restaurant. Okay, So in walks Jalen Brunson and in
- 26:24Speaker 2: walk chairs every table.
- 26:25Speaker 1: There's one chair at the table, one share.
- 26:28Speaker 2: It's an odd restaurant. It's one lonely said chair. It's
- 26:38Speaker 2: two chairs. But they each walk in with with with
- 26:41Speaker 2: a two chairs, but one table, okay. Derek Jeter walks
- 26:48Speaker 2: in with a plus one. Jalen Brunson walks in with
- 26:51Speaker 2: a plus one. Who is Alan Han giving that table to?
- 26:55Speaker 4: Of course it's Jalen Brunson, of course it is. Yeah, absolutely,
- 27:01Speaker 4: right now he's the king in New York. Man, He's
- 27:03Speaker 4: the king of New.
- 27:04Speaker 3: York right now.
- 27:05Speaker 4: And there's there's there's no question that any restaurant that
- 27:08Speaker 4: has that said one table with one chair, they're gonna
- 27:11Speaker 4: be reserving it for him, even if even if Derek
- 27:15Speaker 4: came in first and they know Jalen's coming.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Yeah, we have a nice table over here for you.
- 27:19Speaker 3: This is over here, you know. Still it's a really
- 27:21Speaker 3: good table, but this one is not available right now.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I'm sorry. We are prisoners of the moment.
- 27:27Speaker 4: We know Jeter has done great things, but what Jalen
- 27:30Speaker 4: Runson has done feels like a near miracle. And then
- 27:34Speaker 4: he deserves all the flowers that he gets because I
- 27:36Speaker 4: can tell you, guys, from the times you know that
- 27:38Speaker 4: I've been able to spend with him over the years.
- 27:41Speaker 3: He's as genuine.
- 27:42Speaker 4: As they come. And I know people say that a lot.
- 27:45Speaker 4: I'm telling you what you what you see is what
- 27:47Speaker 4: you get with him. He's as good a human being
- 27:49Speaker 4: as he is a basketball player. And that's I think
- 27:51Speaker 4: what makes it so easy to reform.
- 27:53Speaker 6: So now Josh Hart walks in, then John Starks walks in.
- 27:59Speaker 3: Who get to the table for.
- 28:00Speaker 1: The plus one? It's gonna be hard, it's gonna be hard.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Well, Josh would brobably be Jalen's plus one anyway, So what's.
- 28:08Speaker 1: You're right about that?
- 28:12Speaker 2: Let's try this one, Taylor, this is an interesting one.
- 28:15Speaker 1: You're gonna give it to heart? Right? Is that? Is
- 28:17Speaker 1: that fair?
- 28:17Speaker 3: Oh? So not Jalen? Now now it's hard or start? Yeah?
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:22Speaker 2: He shifted the conversation from uh, how damn John Starks
- 28:27Speaker 2: at Josh rd.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Now you're now you're making me choose be one of
- 28:29Speaker 4: my favorite players of all time and one of my
- 28:32Speaker 4: favorite interviews of all time. Yes again, I'm in the moment.
- 28:35Speaker 4: I've got to give it to Josh right now. I
- 28:37Speaker 4: think even John would say, if he saw Josh givin,
- 28:39Speaker 4: let him, let him, let him take this seat, even
- 28:41Speaker 4: John would say that.
- 28:42Speaker 2: All right, two more, we get you out of here.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Karl Anthony Towns walks in with a plus one. Patrick
- 28:47Speaker 2: Ewing walks in with a plus one.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Carl Anthony Towns plus one is Jordan Woods?
- 28:52Speaker 3: What would you do?
- 28:56Speaker 2: He's the answer, I'm not stupid, Okay, I asked what
- 29:01Speaker 2: Don mcgreca walks in, Peter Rosenberg walks in, who.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Gets the table? Oh man, I mean.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Donald's gonna yell at you just so you know if
- 29:11Speaker 2: you don't get in the table, right.
- 29:13Speaker 3: Yes, that's the thing. Donald feel away.
- 29:16Speaker 4: Peter Peter will make have fun with it and then
- 29:18Speaker 4: probably sit at a nearby table and then just give
- 29:21Speaker 4: me a crap for it the whole rest of the time.
- 29:23Speaker 3: And I'll tell.
- 29:24Speaker 4: You what, I Yeah, i'd have to give it to
- 29:27Speaker 4: dumb just because of the fact that if I didn't,
- 29:31Speaker 4: he probably wouldn't. But he's a you talk about the petty,
- 29:34Speaker 4: he's a grudge holder. He would hold that forever over me.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Every time he'd introduced the show, he would remind people
- 29:42Speaker 4: of you know, Donald Greca, Peter Rosenberg and the guy
- 29:45Speaker 4: that wouldn't give me a table thing.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Yes, and then he would do.
- 29:50Speaker 4: This whole thing about how I never want to eat
- 29:52Speaker 4: here anyway, I don't like this place anyway, Like that's
- 29:55Speaker 4: his whole thing. So, by the way say it, I
- 29:57Speaker 4: might put Rosenberg at the table just so I can
- 29:59Speaker 4: get that version of Greka.
- 30:02Speaker 3: You're really good at being the host there.
- 30:03Speaker 5: But honestly, Hans Steakhouse sounds really good.
- 30:06Speaker 1: I delightfo something about it. It sounds like I definitely try
- 30:09Speaker 1: that place.
- 30:09Speaker 3: It sounds like a German place.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yes, I feel free to run with that idea. Pull
- 30:14Speaker 1: the steakhouse out, go ahead?
- 30:16Speaker 3: Why not?
- 30:17Speaker 2: All right, man, get out of here. It's a great
- 30:19Speaker 2: list to check about every afternoon. ESPA New York. Don
- 30:21Speaker 2: hont Rosenberg also MSG network he's been a Knicks analyst.
- 30:25Speaker 2: It's twenty eleven. What a great couple of months, what
- 30:28Speaker 2: a great run. In tomorrow we cap it all off
- 30:31Speaker 2: for the parade in New York City. Gonna be a
- 30:33Speaker 2: fun time. Alan, thank you so much for doing this.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Congratulations to you. We appreciate it. Man, glad I can
- 30:38Speaker 2: do it. Thanks guys, thanks for having me.
