- 0:07Speaker 1: Big boxes. Yeah, well, Wake Forest a really good football team.
- 0:12Speaker 1: You know, you have to ignore their record and look
- 0:15Speaker 1: at the way they play on film. And they're big,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and they're physical, and they're fast, and they're disciplined, and
- 0:21Speaker 1: they've got experience at you know, the key position, which
- 0:24Speaker 1: is quarterback Hank Bachmeyer, who actually recruited when I was
- 0:28Speaker 1: at U C. L A. And they's got a lot
- 0:30Speaker 1: of snaps, very experienced. Uh, we've got the best running
- 0:34Speaker 1: back that we have faced to this point in time,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and uh, tremendous offensive line as well. Defensively up front.
- 0:40Speaker 1: They play really hard, they're physical, they know what they're doing,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and you can tell it's a really well coached team.
- 0:46Speaker 1: So you know, we got to work cut out for us, obviously,
- 0:50Speaker 1: and it'll be a heck of challenge and uh, you know,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's gonna have to go out and play really really well,
- 0:56Speaker 1: you know, and and try to try to win the
- 0:58Speaker 1: turnover battle and try to hold them from you know,
- 1:02Speaker 1: getting explosives against us, and hopefully make some plays. But
- 1:05Speaker 1: it's a really really good football team, really impressive on tape.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Can you describe to their offense? And it is very
- 1:14Speaker 1: tough to prepare for their little mesh stuff where the
- 1:17Speaker 1: you know, hankle keep the ball in that running back
- 1:19Speaker 1: stomach for a long long time. They need to give
- 1:21Speaker 1: it or pull it and throw and uh yeah, you
- 1:25Speaker 1: have to be patient, but you can't play on your heels,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and they do it to perfection. Our guys have given
- 1:31Speaker 1: us a good look so far, but it's never the
- 1:33Speaker 1: same as it's going to be when you're playing a
- 1:35Speaker 1: team that does it for real evaluation. Well, we did
- 1:43Speaker 1: a complete self scout offensively, defensively, on special teams as well. Uh,
- 1:48Speaker 1: just where we were things that we were doing well,
- 1:51Speaker 1: things that we need to improve on, how we can
- 1:53Speaker 1: improve on them. If we were putting the players in
- 1:55Speaker 1: the right position to have success, if there are guys
- 1:58Speaker 1: that we needed to see emerge and you find roles
- 2:00Speaker 1: for uh, you know. So it's an evaluation of everything
- 2:04Speaker 1: we've done, the calls we've played, the defenses we've played
- 2:07Speaker 1: in certain situations, what's working, you know, what's giving us trouble,
- 2:10Speaker 1: how we can coach them better. I mean, you know,
- 2:13Speaker 1: you spend a lot of time in a week like
- 2:14Speaker 1: that just self evaluating. And then we got a little
- 2:17Speaker 1: bit of work on wake, you know, not not a ton,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but enough to just get an introduction to them. We
- 2:23Speaker 1: had three really good practices. Uh. Our guys had tremendous
- 2:27Speaker 1: energy and focus. And then we gave them some time
- 2:29Speaker 1: to you know, recover a little bit and rest and
- 2:32Speaker 1: didn't have meetings in the afternoon so they could focus
- 2:35Speaker 1: on school and focus on getting getting rest. And they
- 2:38Speaker 1: came back this week and and uh, and they've been
- 2:40Speaker 1: good so far, doing well. Uh. Well, we're running the
- 2:54Speaker 1: ball okay, although the last game we didn't. Our third
- 3:00Speaker 1: down defense is okay, although it can be better. Our
- 3:07Speaker 1: field goal kicking is good, our punting is good, can
- 3:10Speaker 1: always be better. So you know, as a coach, a
- 3:15Speaker 1: lot of times you spend more time on the thing
- 3:18Speaker 1: that you're not doing well that you need to improve on.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And so those are the things that we really took
- 3:23Speaker 1: the hard look at. You have your system, you have
- 3:31Speaker 1: your concepts. You're always manipulating them every week. You know,
- 3:35Speaker 1: you're trying to hide things that you do by formation
- 3:38Speaker 1: and motion or personnel group in terms of just adding plays.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Like I said, that's a constant, but it's got to
- 3:45Speaker 1: be within your scheme. So you're not going to put
- 3:47Speaker 1: in a whole new package. Necessarily you might add a
- 3:50Speaker 1: player two, but things that you've typically done in the past,
- 3:54Speaker 1: so that you have familiarity with them do what we want. Well.
- 4:02Speaker 1: We have to continue to build endurance. So getting the
- 4:04Speaker 1: work in is really important, and so we work Monday, Tuesday,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and Wednesday hard on the field. That's gave them Thursday, Friday,
- 4:09Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday to recover, you know. And since we're
- 4:13Speaker 1: a morning team, I think that really helps us as
- 4:15Speaker 1: well because they get the majority of the data to
- 4:18Speaker 1: be off their feet, you know, be in class, to rest, recover,
- 4:21Speaker 1: to get treatment, things like that. So I haven't felt
- 4:25Speaker 1: like our team has been fatigued. I think that we
- 4:28Speaker 1: did a good job this whole off season. The players
- 4:31Speaker 1: did a good job this offseason of pushing and building
- 4:34Speaker 1: some endurance, and I think that's going to help us
- 4:35Speaker 1: down the stretch. I'm a believer in momentum week to week,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I think you, No, am I like a believer in
- 4:45Speaker 1: that that one week carries over to another. No, I'm not.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think every week is a new entity, every week
- 4:50Speaker 1: is a new challenge. No, I don't believe in momentum.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I believe in momentum in a game in a drive,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but in a season, no, I think that's a that's
- 5:00Speaker 1: something that can lead to disaster because it allows your
- 5:05Speaker 1: mind to wander and dance, and complacency seeps in and
- 5:09Speaker 1: then you're in a bad spot. Nick who he's doing great.
- 5:15Speaker 1: He's doing great. He's doing great. He's doing great, doing great,
- 5:23Speaker 1: Skyler doing great. They're all doing great. Tucker, Tucker's not
- 5:28Speaker 1: doing great. Yeah, Tucker's not doing great. Tucker had surgery.
- 5:31Speaker 1: He had the Liz Frank and he's out for the year.
- 5:34Speaker 1: The other guy should all be back and ready to go. Yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 1: it's more a ligament type of deal, but it's a
- 5:41Speaker 1: pretty serious injury. So he had surgery two week a
- 5:44Speaker 1: week a little over a week ago, heard it on
- 5:46Speaker 1: the last Nobody noticed, Nobody asks, I'm not gonna I'm
- 5:49Speaker 1: not gonna announce injuries if you guys don't ask. So
- 5:52Speaker 1: he heard it on the last play of the Buffalo
- 5:54Speaker 1: game and had to have surgery. That allot the tackle
- 6:03Speaker 1: earlier on says anything that he said, he thinks we're
- 6:12Speaker 1: playing better. You know, he's never gonna be se satisfied.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Uh, he's a defensive minded coach
- 6:19Speaker 1: and Uh. I mean, shoot, he's he's he's a pretty good,
- 6:23Speaker 1: pretty good judge of things. You know, he's want you
- 6:25Speaker 1: wanna it's a head coach. He won a hundred and
- 6:27Speaker 1: eighty five or something games in his career in college
- 6:30Speaker 1: in uh USFL, in the NFL. So when he tells
- 6:34Speaker 1: me something's not right, I typically would listen to him.
- 6:38Speaker 1: But he he's he's a little more satisfied. We're a
- 6:41Speaker 1: little happier, but he's not satisfied. He didn't think we're
- 6:44Speaker 1: wrapping en up, wrapping up enough. And you know, I
- 6:47Speaker 1: share his sentiments. So about does my dad? Yeah, no,
- 6:54Speaker 1: he he doesn't wanna do that. He that's not his deal.
- 6:56Speaker 1: He's coached enough. He just talks to me. He doesn't
- 6:59Speaker 1: he didn't wanna. He don't wanna talk to these guys.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I mean he you know, he's a fan now, so
- 7:04Speaker 1: he's our most ardent fan. He'll probably watch the game
- 7:06Speaker 1: three or four times over and over and over and
- 7:08Speaker 1: over again, and and then I get my report. So
- 7:12Speaker 1: what makes what's that? What makes clayboard with the best
- 7:16Speaker 1: running back you face? Uh? Vision, speed, quickness, burst, toughness,
- 7:22Speaker 1: ball security, ability to catch it out of the backfield
- 7:25Speaker 1: decision making. Uh, he's special. Yeah, I think he's really special.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Did you ever yours fan? That's it was not no
- 7:39Speaker 1: come to be able to be fish issue. I don't
- 7:43Speaker 1: like like the closess that that you a couple of
- 7:46Speaker 1: sticks and turnment. You thought little like that. Now that
- 7:49Speaker 1: he's suggesting some close you get a chance to watch
- 7:52Speaker 1: any of the games of the Gros lot night. What's
- 7:54Speaker 1: your feeling when you speed somebody? You know what you hope?
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm really excited for Brick. You know, He's always been
- 8:03Speaker 1: really special to make. When I was in San Francisco,
- 8:06Speaker 1: we drafted him and we got really really close. I
- 8:09Speaker 1: got to coach him for a long time there, and
- 8:11Speaker 1: then I was able to hire him. I believe it
- 8:13Speaker 1: was his first real coaching job at UCLA. He was
- 8:15Speaker 1: our specially Nams coordinator linebacker coach, then became our deems
- 8:18Speaker 1: the coordinator. Then he moved into the pros with Dan
- 8:21Speaker 1: Quinn in Atlanta. And I've just always really been a
- 8:25Speaker 1: big fan of Jeff as a person. He's just, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 1: he's everything you're supposed to be as a man and
- 8:31Speaker 1: as a coach. Just great integrity, toughness, honesty, I'm really
- 8:35Speaker 1: excited for him. Got to talk to him a little
- 8:37Speaker 1: bit last week and watched a little bit of the
- 8:41Speaker 1: game last night, saw his press conference, and he just, yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 1: he just conducts himself in the right way. I wouldn't
- 8:47Speaker 1: be surprised if he's not the head coach of the
- 8:49Speaker 1: Jets or somewhere else next year. I mean, players respond
- 8:52Speaker 1: to a guy like that because he's so genuine. He
- 8:56Speaker 1: just doesn't ever put on an act. And and you know,
- 9:01Speaker 1: he's like I said, he's just great integrity and toughness
- 9:04Speaker 1: and morals and great family man and just everything about
- 9:07Speaker 1: him as exemplary. When he was playing. Yeah, yeah, Jeff
- 9:17Speaker 1: was a guy. You know. So I was a deemsu
- 9:19Speaker 1: coordinator and he was a linebacker and we'd get in
- 9:22Speaker 1: games and you know it's almost like the catchers, you know,
- 9:26Speaker 1: the pitcher shaking off the catcher on a call. You know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I might make a call and Jeff had a feel
- 9:31Speaker 1: and he'd give me, you know, give me the signal
- 9:33Speaker 1: that he wanted, and you'd go with it, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: because he was out there playing and he had a feel,
- 9:39Speaker 1: and you know, he was the kind of guy you'd
- 9:41Speaker 1: ask for advice on things during the week, you know, what,
- 9:43Speaker 1: do you feel comfortable playing? And he was just very
- 9:47Speaker 1: very meticulous in his preparation, had great instincts, understood the
- 9:52Speaker 1: game very very well, and he's carried that over into coaching.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You know, when I hadn't seen him coach, and then
- 9:57Speaker 1: when he came to UCLA and his first meeting with
- 9:59Speaker 1: a special teams group, you just went, Wow, Okay, this, Yeah,
- 10:02Speaker 1: he's really got it. But yeah, as a player, you
- 10:05Speaker 1: had a feel that he had that that kind of
- 10:06Speaker 1: that coach's mindset, the way you analyze the game. Quarterback. Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: in the new rules and the COVID year and all that. Now, Hank,
- 10:20Speaker 1: I believe was a junior. But I have a picture
- 10:23Speaker 1: of Hank and I together as a matter of fact.
- 10:25Speaker 1: That and I did a Boise State game for ESPN
- 10:28Speaker 1: a few years ago and Hank was the quarterback then.
- 10:30Speaker 1: So he's just been in a pretty amazing journey. And
- 10:34Speaker 1: you know, he's always been a super kid, and he's
- 10:36Speaker 1: always been a really great competitor and uh, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: he's had his chances and he's made the most out
- 10:42Speaker 1: of him. They they do, what does he do? He's
- 10:50Speaker 1: a good decision maker and he threw two picks last week,
- 10:53Speaker 1: but he uh, he took ownership for him, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 1: and he's playing a pretty darn good defense and they
- 10:58Speaker 1: were playing from behind. But uh uh, he's a really
- 11:01Speaker 1: good decision maker. He's uh, he takes accountability. Like I said,
- 11:06Speaker 1: so he you know, he's a leader. Guys are gonnaollowim.
- 11:09Speaker 1: He's got good receivers to throw that he's got, you know,
- 11:10Speaker 1: some really big, physical, talented receivers, have really good slot receivers.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Their leading receiver tight ends, you know, their tight end
- 11:17Speaker 1: centric team. They didn't have two of their tight ends
- 11:19Speaker 1: last week with them back this week. And anytime you
- 11:23Speaker 1: can run the ball the way they can run the ball,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, and teams have to commit to that. And
- 11:27Speaker 1: that slow mesh game, guys tend to get open. And
- 11:30Speaker 1: Hank makes good, accurate throws thirty four points a game
- 11:39Speaker 1: for years. You see vulnerabilities there. Misleading. I think it's misleading.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I think you know, I walked in here two weeks
- 11:47Speaker 1: ago and told you that Temple's defense was really good,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and you could look at their stats and say, well,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, he's full of it. Temple's defense is very good.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Wake Forest's defense is very good. You know, stats are
- 11:57Speaker 1: completely misleading in my opinion. It's what you see on film.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I see on film as a team that is physical,
- 12:02Speaker 1: they tackle well, they're disciplined, they fly to the football,
- 12:06Speaker 1: they know what they're doing, and I think they're really good.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You know. I I don't really look at stats. I
- 12:13Speaker 1: look at the film and what my eyes tell me.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So I'm impressed with them, just like I was impressed.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I mean I was impressed with Temple. You know, it
- 12:20Speaker 1: didn't surprise me one bit the way Temple played on
- 12:22Speaker 1: defense against US two weeks ago, not at all, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: it won't surprise me. And this is going to be
- 12:27Speaker 1: this is going to be a heck of a battle.
- 12:30Speaker 1: You know. We've got to be able to hang in
- 12:31Speaker 1: there and try to find a way to win it late.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I think it always helps when you play at home,
- 12:40Speaker 1: just the familiar surroundings, staying at the same hotel, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 1: being in the same routine, being in the same locker room,
- 12:48Speaker 1: running out the same tunnel. Uh. You know, we've been
- 12:50Speaker 1: there a lot, We've practiced there several times. I think
- 12:54Speaker 1: that just the confines of home are more are more comforting,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you know, And so if we could play all twelve
- 13:02Speaker 1: games at home, I'd be all for it. But the
- 13:05Speaker 1: fact is that that we have seven at home, which
- 13:08Speaker 1: is pretty great, and we have to take advantage of it,
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, just feeling like, you know, we are able
- 13:14Speaker 1: to maintain our routine. I think routine is so critical
- 13:17Speaker 1: as you get into that last forty eight hours of preparation.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And we've been lucky to have you know, three games
- 13:24Speaker 1: in a row. That's being our fourth game at home.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Hard at your running game and okay so far, so
- 13:33Speaker 1: you're what was it at the last game? Was it
- 13:36Speaker 1: something that Temple was do? Uh, Temple did a really
- 13:41Speaker 1: good job of playing man coverage and being successful in
- 13:44Speaker 1: their man coverage was allowed them to bring an extra
- 13:48Speaker 1: guy up into their run support. They did a nice
- 13:50Speaker 1: job of getting up the field, knocking our tackles off
- 13:52Speaker 1: of their points backdoor on us some you know our
- 13:58Speaker 1: I mean point I said it after the game, I
- 13:59Speaker 1: am points were off a little bit. We just didn't
- 14:02Speaker 1: play well up front. Our offensive line didn't play to
- 14:04Speaker 1: the to the standard that they're capable of playing. I
- 14:07Speaker 1: have a heigh regard for our offensive line, and they
- 14:12Speaker 1: they know they didn't play well enough. So we just
- 14:14Speaker 1: have to be more disciplined. We have to be more
- 14:16Speaker 1: exact in where we put our hat in our hands
- 14:20Speaker 1: and what our point of aim is. And if we
- 14:22Speaker 1: can do that, then we always have success or have
- 14:24Speaker 1: a chance to have success in our run game. If
- 14:26Speaker 1: we don't, then it's going to be tough and you
- 14:29Speaker 1: don't believe so much game to game. But winning a
- 14:34Speaker 1: game like that does it different energy to the team
- 14:38Speaker 1: or the team. I think it helps you if you
- 14:42Speaker 1: get into a game that's really tight, know that you
- 14:45Speaker 1: that you can win it. You know that you can
- 14:47Speaker 1: go down to the last play and win it. But
- 14:49Speaker 1: you still got to do it, you know. But yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 1: I mean, anytime you have some success, it's going to
- 14:55Speaker 1: build some confidence, but you still have to go out
- 14:58Speaker 1: and execute it, you know. So you know, we've we've
- 15:02Speaker 1: been able to blow a couple of teams out and
- 15:04Speaker 1: we finally won one that was really tight, and I
- 15:07Speaker 1: think that gives you. It gives you some confidence that
- 15:10Speaker 1: you at least you know how to do it, you know.
- 15:12Speaker 1: But you also look at a game like that and
- 15:14Speaker 1: you compare it to the games where we've you know,
- 15:16Speaker 1: had kind of a lopsided victory and you go back
- 15:19Speaker 1: through the week and how you practiced and what your
- 15:21Speaker 1: mindset was and what your attitude was going into the game,
- 15:23Speaker 1: and you can learn a lot from that too. You know, well,
- 15:26Speaker 1: maybe we didn't have the right mindset going into this
- 15:28Speaker 1: last game, and that's why it was as close as
- 15:30Speaker 1: it was, you know, aside from the fact that I
- 15:32Speaker 1: thought Temple was a good team, and we know Wake
- 15:35Speaker 1: is a really good team and you put them all
- 15:36Speaker 1: you just put the film on for three or four plays, especially,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know, their offense, which is the first thing that
- 15:42Speaker 1: I looked at last week and I was like, jeez,
- 15:44Speaker 1: a big freaking monsters up front, you know, and the
- 15:47Speaker 1: receivers are six three and their backs it's freaking good.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So you changed how Dams well turning out. You know.
- 16:02Speaker 1: It's kind of weird. It's like I've never been able
- 16:05Speaker 1: to find like a consistent formula. I think every year
- 16:08Speaker 1: is a little bit different, you know, depending on when
- 16:10Speaker 1: the bye week is and what happened previously and what
- 16:14Speaker 1: you need to get accomplished. I didn't even look back
- 16:18Speaker 1: this year at last year's or the previous years. Is
- 16:20Speaker 1: just kind of, you know, a feel for where you
- 16:22Speaker 1: are based on your experiences. So this week was a
- 16:27Speaker 1: little bit different than last year. Next year will probably
- 16:30Speaker 1: be different than this year. You know. It's just a
- 16:33Speaker 1: feel you get being around your team and seeing where
- 16:36Speaker 1: they are emotionally and physically and what they need and
- 16:38Speaker 1: what we need to focus on. So I felt good
- 16:41Speaker 1: about the week. I thought the players responded really well.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I think we did the right things. I don't feel
- 16:47Speaker 1: like we will come out with any rust on us
- 16:51Speaker 1: or anything like that. I mean, we practice hard, and
- 16:54Speaker 1: hard practices knock any rust off, so we should be okay. Okay,
- 17:00Speaker 1: thanks everyone, have a good day.
