- 0:15Kearns: Shanghai shenanigans.
- 0:17Ryan: watching,
- 0:17Kearns: going on with your microphone.
- 0:19Ryan: watching CNO mania.
- 0:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 0:22Episode 16 on Night Breed.
- 0:24And unfortunately we don't have our epic intro because the software we
- 0:28used to record crashed a second ago, so we missed our first three minutes
- 0:32that we had, which was pretty good.
- 0:33I'm not gonna lie, you guys are never gonna hear it.
- 0:35Ryan: Nope,
- 0:35Kearns: Sorry about that.
- 0:36Ryan: it's in, it's in like a data
- 0:39Jon: Sorry guys.
- 0:40Ryan: Much like, like
- 0:42Kearns: Much like, much like Midian.
- 0:44So yeah,
- 0:45Jon: It's
- 0:46Kearns: we are discussing we're, yeah.
- 0:49Good.
- 0:49Shout out.
- 0:50Good shout out for Shutter.
- 0:51Good.
- 0:52Shout out for Night Breed.
- 0:54It's funny, every time I generate hashtags for this movie, shutter
- 0:57is like the number one thing.
- 0:59So I guess this must be, it's it's love child, it's little
- 1:03Streamy love child for shutter.
- 1:05Jon: think I've ever noticed it on there.
- 1:08Ryan: I never noticed
- 1:09Kearns: I wouldn't never noticed it either.
- 1:10I watched it on Prime for like a dollar 99.
- 1:14We can get anything on Prime.
- 1:15I, you know what, actually I don't wanna do this.
- 1:16Fuck you, Bezos.
- 1:18I'm not helping you out.
- 1:19All right.
- 1:20You're a dick.
- 1:20I hope you go up in your little blue capsule and get lost
- 1:23out in space, but I digress.
- 1:27You know who's not a one?
- 1:29Percenter?
- 1:31Aaron Boone.
- 1:32Oh, well, yeah.
- 1:33Jon: Aaron
- 1:34Kearns: It's
- 1:34Jon: and Boone.
- 1:35Oh,
- 1:35Kearns: Boone, Aaron, and Boone.
- 1:38So we were talking about earlier how we thought the main character's name
- 1:42in this movie is so outta place.
- 1:44It's even more hilarious.
- 1:46Like what kind of name is Aaron Boone for?
- 1:48The main character
- 1:50Ryan: A baseball player.
- 1:51Kearns: of Night Breed.
- 1:53Yeah.
- 1:53But wow,
- 1:55Jon: I
- 1:55Kearns: it's, he sounds like he should be.
- 1:57Jon: heavily influenced by
- 1:59Kearns: Influenced by
- 1:59Jon: Aaron Byrne,
- 2:00Kearns: Aaron
- 2:01Jon: Love Child, Aaron
- 2:02Kearns: Love child, Aaron Perr and Daniel Boone's Love child.
- 2:06That, that's a great idea by the way.
- 2:09There's no way Barker was like, yeah, this is exactly what I'm going for,
- 2:16Ryan: And
- 2:17Kearns: I like it nonetheless.
- 2:19Ryan: sitting in his attic typing away
- 2:21Kearns: Typing
- 2:22Ryan: is the plan He, his whole goal was
- 2:26Kearns: this old en,
- 2:28Ryan: Um, it's interesting 'cause he was feel, he feels like he was
- 2:33Kearns: he feels like he en towards like monster superhero.
- 2:38Ryan: of
- 2:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 2:39Ryan: where like they
- 2:40Kearns: Tell me more.
- 2:41Ryan: they can live forever.
- 2:43He was
- 2:43Kearns: Live forever,
- 2:44Ryan: that?
- 2:44Kearns: like.
- 2:45Ryan: how, um, technically the book Cabal came about, which is night breed.
- 2:51Kearns: Which is night breed.
- 2:52And it's funny, I couldn't catch, so we were just laughing at me a second
- 2:57ago because I couldn't figure out why Craig Scheffer was on, uh, the, the cast
- 3:02list twice as Aaron Boone and Cabal.
- 3:05And it's partially not my fault, if you look it up on IMDB, the, the photo they
- 3:10use of him as cabal looks like it was his mugshot after a night of like drinking
- 3:15nothing but absent and smoking tires.
- 3:19That's it.
- 3:20And then his, his picture as Aaron Boone looks like he's straight
- 3:24out of a James Dean movie.
- 3:26Like it's ridiculous the difference in the two.
- 3:29So I'm only partially to blame for that one.
- 3:31But yeah, cabal is the name of the original work that the movie is made from.
- 3:37And what is Cabal?
- 3:38Ryan
- 3:39Ryan: Cabal was a,
- 3:41Kearns: Cabal?
- 3:41Ryan: would say it's a short novel
- 3:43Kearns: say it's a short novel, uh.
- 3:45Ryan: technically the character Aaron Boone, who goes on
- 3:48this journey similar to the
- 3:49Kearns: It's on this journey similar to the movie Night Breed and themes.
- 3:54Ryan: similar to the
- 3:55Kearns: like, I, it's very similar to the plot.
- 3:56So like everything you see in the movie
- 3:58Ryan: Um,
- 3:59Kearns: in the book.
- 4:00Ryan: minor, couple
- 4:00Kearns: minor, minor, couple differences in the ending.
- 4:03Ryan: But
- 4:04Kearns: Wow.
- 4:05But
- 4:05Ryan: that's about it.
- 4:06But the whole
- 4:06Kearns: yeah, that's about it.
- 4:07But the whole focus get this journey.
- 4:09Finding Midian, um, accepting the fact that he's this monster
- 4:14Ryan: are
- 4:14Kearns: when the monsters are like, no, you're not,
- 4:17Ryan: you
- 4:17Kearns: um,
- 4:18Ryan: screwed over,
- 4:19Kearns: you were, uh, screwed over, but we'll basically,
- 4:21Ryan: else to go.
- 4:22Kearns: I think this is a racist story.
- 4:25I just wanna get that outta the way.
- 4:27I know that you guys weren't aware of this.
- 4:29My wife is in the other room and just started laughing.
- 4:32She went, this is a, this is a racist tale.
- 4:36You said Midian because you, you are a Caucasian.
- 4:40You are a gringo, as they say in Meridian.
- 4:45Meridian rather.
- 4:48I think this is Pablo Escobar's story and Clive Barker is thinly veiling.
- 4:54That
- 4:56Jon: I mean.
- 4:56Kearns: to think, think about it.
- 4:58Ryan: So
- 4:59Jon: sort
- 4:59Kearns: I sort of gotta,
- 5:00Jon: is
- 5:01Kearns: this is
- 5:02Jon: the X-Men
- 5:03Kearns: X-Men.
- 5:04Jon: the X-Men movies.
- 5:05Kearns: That one is actually racist though.
- 5:07Like the X-Men is totally a metaphor about racism.
- 5:10Yeah, that one really is.
- 5:12Mine is a fever dream that I came up with as a joke when I thought I was
- 5:15dying of laryngitis like an hour ago.
- 5:18But, um, no, the second I knew that we were gonna say Midian Midian in this
- 5:24way, and I was like, it just sounds like a white person's way of saying Midian.
- 5:28Ryan: Well, he is white.
- 5:29He's
- 5:30Kearns: he's white,
- 5:30Ryan: bark is
- 5:31Kearns: he's insanely white.
- 5:32Ryan: yes.
- 5:33Kearns: He's the whitest of whites.
- 5:36Ryan: His black hair
- 5:37Kearns: It's like Clive Barker, Neil Gaman a ghost.
- 5:42Ryan: That is why I didn't see his
- 5:43Kearns: That is why I didn't see that
- 5:44Ryan: He
- 5:45Kearns: film,
- 5:45Ryan: to be
- 5:46Kearns: but oh yeah, I forgot about that.
- 5:47Yeah, that's right.
- 5:48That was very organically done because I'm an idiot.
- 5:51But yeah, Neil Gaman is in the, um, is in one of the scenes of this movie,
- 5:55Ryan: The club scene supposedly, and I still can't
- 5:58Kearns: supposedly, and I still can't find him.
- 6:00I have to watch it three times.
- 6:02Did you watch the director's cut?
- 6:03Ryan: That's,
- 6:04Kearns: Yep.
- 6:04You did?
- 6:05Ryan: the only
- 6:05Kearns: That's, that's the only version I have.
- 6:07Um,
- 6:08Ryan: Funny
- 6:08Kearns: in like three frames.
- 6:09Ryan: I
- 6:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 6:11Hey,
- 6:11Ryan: the
- 6:12Kearns: like there's
- 6:12Ryan: is
- 6:13Kearns: original
- 6:14Ryan: which is the shitty
- 6:15Kearns: which is.
- 6:16Ryan: watch it.
- 6:16Kearns: Version, don't watch it.
- 6:18Ryan: director's
- 6:18Kearns: the second is the director's cut from, uh, shout Factory.
- 6:21Mm-hmm.
- 6:22Ryan: the
- 6:22Kearns: The third version, the
- 6:23Ryan: which is
- 6:24Kearns: cabal cut, which is
- 6:25Ryan: which
- 6:26Kearns: minutes.
- 6:26Ryan: would,
- 6:27Kearns: And that's with all the added scenes, uh, added, uh, Midian scenes.
- 6:31Ryan: one.
- 6:32Kearns: it changes the story a lot though.
- 6:34Ryan: I'm
- 6:35Jon: That's so much night breed.
- 6:37Kearns: It's, well, that's who gets more camera time and they flush out a little
- 6:41bit of their side stories a bit more.
- 6:43and the different versions have a different ending for one of our favorite
- 6:46characters, A fan favorite character.
- 6:49And I don't know if I pronounce his name right and I don't really care,
- 6:51but the Narciss our face, dude.
- 6:54Ryan: I thought you were gonna go with Dr.
- 6:55Kearns: So you were gonna go with Dr. No.
- 6:57Well, I hate him.
- 6:58He, he scared the shit outta me as a kid.
- 7:00I still can't close a top freezer without freaking out.
- 7:04'cause that's son of a bitch and I saw that when I was very young.
- 7:08Ryan: how he removes the
- 7:09Jon: mask is, it's the
- 7:12Kearns: his,
- 7:12Jon: The mask is creepy.
- 7:14Kearns: yeah.
- 7:15Ryan: how he
- 7:15Kearns: So if you're.
- 7:17Ryan: He does it from the
- 7:18Kearns: Uh huh.
- 7:19Ryan: like,
- 7:20Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:21And he pulls it up.
- 7:22Well, they, I mean, they did some things with this movie that elevated it from
- 7:26like, pretty good to Epic, I think.
- 7:29I think this is one of those great movies that doesn't get nearly
- 7:32enough talk time, from the nineties.
- 7:34And, it's more than just the special effects.
- 7:38And they do a great job with the costume design in this one.
- 7:41They really do.
- 7:42and the, just the unique way they depict all the different
- 7:45characters, which pulling from the written page ain't that easy,
- 7:49Ryan: No.
- 7:50Kearns: you know what I mean?
- 7:51Um, even with Clive around to like sort of help out, it's not that easy to do.
- 7:56Um, and you could, he directed it.
- 7:58Yeah.
- 7:59Ryan: did.
- 7:59Kearns: So he was definitely around.
- 8:00Ryan: yeah, he was, he was in
- 8:02Kearns: Oh yeah, he was he
- 8:02Ryan: he direct right before this.
- 8:04He
- 8:04Kearns: direct right before this?
- 8:05He did.
- 8:06Hell raiser
- 8:06Ryan: Hell
- 8:07Kearns: and he did the
- 8:07Ryan: Hellbound.
- 8:08Kearns: raise.
- 8:08Oh, then he totally brought, he's like, all right, I need everybody who was there.
- 8:12Ryan: but
- 8:12Kearns: Come here with your paint brushes.
- 8:14Ryan: it's
- 8:14Kearns: Yeah.
- 8:15Ryan: the studio
- 8:16Kearns: It's interesting that the studio have,
- 8:17Ryan: I, I love this
- 8:18Kearns: sorry, I, I love this film too.
- 8:20Ryan: I was doing a lot of research and stuff.
- 8:23There was no studio support, though.
- 8:26They went from a $2 million budget to $11 million budget
- 8:30Kearns: million
- 8:30Ryan: they thought it was a
- 8:32Kearns: because they thought
- 8:32which they turned it into because of that reason.
- 8:35Yeah.
- 8:36Ryan: film is the
- 8:37Kearns: Two minute film is the slacker version and it is it a hundred percent.
- 8:41It is.
- 8:41And that's the one that was widely seen.
- 8:43and then there were like true Cabal fans who were pissed off about that because
- 8:47they knew it was a bigger story than, uh, the, just the slasher portion.
- 8:52But for its time period in the nineties, it was a hit as a slasher movie.
- 8:56So it's difficult to say like, who's right and wrong on that one.
- 9:00Plus the director's cut and the cabal cut did come out, so everybody's kind
- 9:03of happy, just not maybe at that time I.
- 9:07Ryan: remember
- 9:07Kearns: I
- 9:07Ryan: being locked in my
- 9:09Kearns: it being locked
- 9:09Ryan: Every
- 9:10Kearns: my father's cabinet every other weekend.
- 9:12I was
- 9:12Ryan: it was
- 9:12Kearns: to my father's house.
- 9:14It was locked in his cabinet.
- 9:15Right.
- 9:15Ryan: stand
- 9:15Kearns: like a VHS stand with the glass locked,
- 9:19Ryan: it open.
- 9:19Kearns: and I tried prying it open.
- 9:20I got it open once
- 9:22Ryan: in
- 9:22Kearns: and I had
- 9:23Ryan: He
- 9:23Kearns: in my hand.
- 9:24Ryan: other one
- 9:24Kearns: He had, uh, what was the other one?
- 9:25Yeah.
- 9:27What other movies did you find in there, Ryan?
- 9:29Ryan: raiser.
- 9:29Um, none of the demons.
- 9:32Kearns: Neither Demons.
- 9:33Ryan: the demons.
- 9:33He did,
- 9:34Kearns: Neither demons.
- 9:35He did he
- 9:35Ryan: no.
- 9:36None of those.
- 9:37Kearns: Those,
- 9:38Ryan: those
- 9:38Kearns: no.
- 9:38No Night shift nurses.
- 9:40Ryan: was in the closet
- 9:41Kearns: that was in the closet.
- 9:42Oh, gee.
- 9:43Jon: He knows where that was.
- 9:45Don't worry.
- 9:45Kearns: Yeah, that was a different spot.
- 9:48Ryan: But
- 9:48Jon: It's always the
- 9:49Kearns: It's all I
- 9:49Jon: the way.
- 9:50Kearns: remember.
- 9:50Ryan: oh yeah, same thing.
- 9:52Kearns: Oh yeah, same thing.
- 9:53Toys.
- 9:53Ryan: the closet.
- 9:54Is it?
- 9:54Kearns: are always in the closet.
- 9:56Like, like Future Christmas gifts listeners.
- 9:59That's what he's talking about.
- 10:00Ryan: Like,
- 10:00Kearns: Yeah.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:01Jon: Okay.
- 10:01Kearns: That's what he means.
- 10:02Yeah.
- 10:03Ryan: wrestling figures, um, action figures.
- 10:07Kearns: Action figures.
- 10:08Ryan: 13
- 10:09Kearns: gonna get back to night breed.
- 10:10Ryan: Um, yes,
- 10:15Kearns: That was great.
- 10:16So yeah, we're back.
- 10:19So you pulled it out of his cabinet?
- 10:20The forbidden cabinet of curiosities.
- 10:23Ryan: I
- 10:24Kearns: Oh,
- 10:24Ryan: got it into the VECR.
- 10:26Kearns: in
- 10:26Ryan: slipped it in
- 10:27Kearns: I, uh,
- 10:29Jon: It in.
- 10:30Kearns: you know,
- 10:32Ryan: I start watching
- 10:33Kearns: I hate you.
- 10:36Ryan: um, I got like
- 10:38Kearns: Um, I got like
- 10:39Ryan: pulled it out.
- 10:40Kearns: minutes in and then pulled it out.
- 10:41Doing And
- 10:42Ryan: that was my first encounter.
- 10:44But, you know,
- 10:46Kearns: do, do it.
- 10:47You son a bitch,
- 10:50John, don't you do it?
- 10:52That just take, that takes a darker turn than any other portion
- 10:54of this conversation would.
- 10:58Ugh.
- 10:59Going, daddy Donovan on 'em.
- 11:01If you get that reference, I salute you, but we're not going to explain it.
- 11:06All right.
- 11:07So, so Ryan got, Ryan watched it when he wasn't supposed to.
- 11:12Okay.
- 11:13And that was the 102 minutes Laster version, right?
- 11:16Ryan: Yeah, it it's a.
- 11:17Kearns: All,
- 11:18Ryan: I
- 11:18Kearns: yeah.
- 11:18It, it's, uh,
- 11:19Ryan: it's,
- 11:19Kearns: feel like,
- 11:20Ryan: the opening's different.
- 11:21Um,
- 11:22Kearns: I
- 11:22Ryan: I feel like the director's cut.
- 11:24Kearns: feel like the director's cut.
- 11:25It gives you that vibe of it's not, I don't know.
- 11:27I was talking to John about this,
- 11:29Ryan: week,
- 11:29Kearns: uh,
- 11:30Ryan: feel
- 11:30Kearns: last week.
- 11:31Ryan: film.
- 11:31Kearns: feel like it's a horror film.
- 11:33Jon: No.
- 11:33Ryan: horror, but it's like fantasy.
- 11:35Kearns: dark fantasy adventure.
- 11:38Yeah.
- 11:38It's a hundred percent dark fantasy.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40Ryan: it, but it's like, can you, you can consider it thriller.
- 11:43I mean, your thoughts on it.
- 11:45Jon: Yeah.
- 11:45Kearns: guy can win at the end of a horror movie, I will make that argument like the
- 11:50good person can win or they can survive.
- 11:53At least winning might be a little bit too much, but there can't be like a
- 11:58whole new adventure awaits, and you're getting into fantasy when you get into
- 12:02there and that's why like that's how I know I wrote a dark fantasy series and
- 12:07not a horror series for that very reason.
- 12:09Like things like that.
- 12:11You can have blood guts and gore and dark fantasy and cool monsters and stuff too.
- 12:15But what else do you think John differentiates the two because you're
- 12:18the most horror guy I've ever met.
- 12:20Jon: Um,
- 12:21Kearns: Ryan.
- 12:21Jon: would say
- 12:21Kearns: I.
- 12:22Jon: largely the lack of scares.
- 12:25Like it's night breed's not a scary movie.
- 12:28Night breed is it's gory silence of the lambs with monsters.
- 12:34And I don't,
- 12:35Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:35Kearns: Oh, that's right.
- 12:36Jon: doesn't fall into horror for me.
- 12:39Ryan: no,
- 12:39Kearns: That's right.
- 12:40Ryan: no.
- 12:41It's a drama.
- 12:42Kearns: It's not even a little psychological.
- 12:46Jon: I don't
- 12:46Kearns: No, I keep,
- 12:48Jon: of the
- 12:48Kearns: I scratch at this
- 12:50Jon: button for me.
- 12:51Kearns: because this is controversial and controversy gets clicks my friend.
- 12:55So you and I are going to keep batting this little birdie back and forth,
- 13:00but I, I don't disagree with you.
- 13:02It's just so much fun to scratch at it.
- 13:04Um, 'cause it is kind of a hot take.
- 13:07That sounds The Lambs is not a horror movie
- 13:09Jon: No, it's
- 13:09Kearns: and nor is Night Breeded.
- 13:12Jon: and
- 13:12Kearns: a thriller.
- 13:13Jon: isn't either, which
- 13:16Kearns: I think, I think you're dead on with night Breed.
- 13:19Jon: it.
- 13:20I mean, they're both great just to me.
- 13:24Kearns: Well.
- 13:25Jon: of the Lambs in particular is not, has almost none of the
- 13:28beats that I would call horror
- 13:31Kearns: Black.
- 13:33I said, I almost said blockbuster.
- 13:35Blockbuster.
- 13:37Don't edit that out.
- 13:38We're keeping it in blockbuster.
- 13:42Blockbuster doesn't have a dark fantasy section.
- 13:45It has a horror section.
- 13:47Ryan: Yes.
- 13:47Kearns: So that's why it's, it's, I mean, movies have far fewer genre capabilities
- 13:53than do books and things like that.
- 13:56Maybe not so much today, but kind of, yeah, still today, so I'm with you, man.
- 14:02I think that they just, they were like, well, we have to, we
- 14:04have to market it as something.
- 14:05Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 14:06Kearns: who it is.
- 14:08Ryan: I feel like they had no
- 14:09Jon: It's like, I
- 14:10Kearns: Head.
- 14:11Yeah.
- 14:12Jon: of the Lambs and Night Breed have some
- 14:14Kearns: Some real life
- 14:15Jon: scary
- 14:16Kearns: scary elements.
- 14:17Serial killers are inherently scary,
- 14:19Jon: but
- 14:20Kearns: but
- 14:22Jon: neither one feels scary as an overall movie.
- 14:27The internal concept has some scares to it.
- 14:31Ryan: Especially the
- 14:32Kearns: And then yeah.
- 14:34Ryan: are
- 14:34Kearns: That the monsters are technically the good guys.
- 14:37Ryan: They're just hiding away.
- 14:38They're
- 14:39Kearns: Hiding away.
- 14:40They're trying to just,
- 14:40Ryan: and boon fucks it up,
- 14:44Kearns: he fucks it up.
- 14:45Yeah.
- 14:45He does much like his career.
- 14:49Ryan: which
- 14:49Kearns: He messes everything up.
- 14:51Ryan: career is minimal.
- 14:52I
- 14:53Kearns: His career is minimal.
- 14:54I didn't even find anything big.
- 14:56The only big thing I saw was for Ann Bobby.
- 14:59Ryan: She
- 14:59Kearns: Who's Lori,
- 15:00Ryan: shock
- 15:01Kearns: was in bio shock as Bridget.
- 15:0310 bomb
- 15:04Ryan: fans listening
- 15:05Kearns: fans
- 15:05Ryan: as
- 15:06Kearns: listening
- 15:06Ryan: I,
- 15:07Kearns: as well as I, I mean, we got David Cronenberg, who's of course,
- 15:10a legend in writing and directing.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:13He, he crushes his role.
- 15:14Ryan: yeah, he does.
- 15:16Kearns: get into him in a bit.
- 15:17Ryan: That was definitely a favor.
- 15:18Kearns: Sorry.
- 15:18I'm like, I'm like looking intently for the one guy.
- 15:23I can't find him of course.
- 15:25But, um, there's one of the night breed that scares the shit outta
- 15:28you in the beginning before you realize they're the good guys.
- 15:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 15:30Kearns: coming to eat his face after they find, after Boone finds them.
- 15:34Yeah, thank you.
- 15:36And I'm just like, ugh.
- 15:38Like he was scary as a kid, as an adult, you're like, oh, okay, here we go.
- 15:42The,
- 15:43Jon: Yeah.
- 15:43Kearns: the a hundred meter dash one is getting after him now and
- 15:46they chases him down a little bit.
- 15:48Ryan: I
- 15:48Kearns: But yeah.
- 15:49Ryan: I always like Kinsky who had like the crescent head
- 15:52Kearns: Who had like the Crescent
- 15:53Ryan: the Eel guy.
- 15:54I thought
- 15:55Kearns: the Eel guy?
- 15:56I thought the eel guy was like, he was kind of freaky too.
- 15:59That was the one that kind of made me squeamish and then I was like,
- 16:02maybe I shouldn't be watching this movie when I was little.
- 16:04'cause it is disturbing the night Breeded characters are disturbing to look at.
- 16:09Jon: Yes.
- 16:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:11Jon: and I would say
- 16:12Kearns: I, I would say that
- 16:13Jon: it and pushes it slightly into horror is the monster.
- 16:18The monster
- 16:18Kearns: it demonstr to our
- 16:19Jon: scary looking.
- 16:20Kearns: area.
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:22And they have their reasons.
- 16:25Do we have definitive reasons for why each one has its own unique look?
- 16:31Ryan: I feel like Rose,
- 16:32Kearns: I feel like Rose,
- 16:34Ryan: she's got a
- 16:34Kearns: she like,
- 16:35Ryan: power, so
- 16:35Kearns: she's got a specific power, so like she can like become smoke,
- 16:38Ryan: herself into different
- 16:39Kearns: transport herself
- 16:40Ryan: her daughter, uh,
- 16:42Kearns: her daughter,
- 16:43Ryan: she's like, uh, a creature.
- 16:46So in the sunlight,
- 16:47Kearns: so in the sunlight,
- 16:48Ryan: this like nymph monster, but in the dark, she's
- 16:52Kearns: but in the dark.
- 16:53She's human.
- 16:54Ryan: each have their
- 16:54Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:55some of 'em are just gross.
- 16:57Ryan: Yes, I,
- 16:58Kearns: Yeah,
- 16:59Ryan: like,
- 16:59Kearns: look funky.
- 17:00Ryan: the one that looks like, ah, from
- 17:01Kearns: Who was the one that looks like a real monster?
- 17:03Yeah.
- 17:04Got like the,
- 17:05Ryan: and the
- 17:05Kearns: like the face on the stomach and the Yeah, and CE has the, just the
- 17:11like he doesn't have superpowers, right?
- 17:13He just has the face and the rest of his peeled off his scalp and everything.
- 17:17Ryan: I,
- 17:17Kearns: He's cool.
- 17:18Ryan: the best character in the whole like movie.
- 17:21Kearns: He's the, well, he is a favorite.
- 17:23And so getting into him in a little bit, we're gonna talk about sort of what they
- 17:26did with the other cuts of the movie.
- 17:28So I don't wanna get too much into him yet.
- 17:30I guess now I might as well.
- 17:32'cause I forgot what I was gonna lead into a second.
- 17:34Oh no I didn't.
- 17:35Um, Cavan came to mind because they do something with the night creatures in
- 17:40that, which when I watched the first run of it and they made night creatures,
- 17:44which are just like, they, they're rein, they're not vampires, John,
- 17:48they're like reincarnated versions of people, but as night creatures, they can
- 17:52only come out at night kind of thing.
- 17:54Um, it's night breed.
- 17:55Ryan: That's true
- 17:56Kearns: It's the exact same idea.
- 17:58It's it's Midian style creatures, but they menace the villagers
- 18:02in like 1660 or whatever.
- 18:05So I thought that they kind of ripped off that idea.
- 18:08I.
- 18:08Ryan: sense why they changed it
- 18:09Kearns: It makes sense why they changed it by like season two and
- 18:12three Yeah, they, they evolved them
- 18:14Ryan: That explains a lot.
- 18:17Kearns: and the new version of it, um, they, they make them center characters
- 18:22and whatnot, but they also, they can carry their traits over too from when
- 18:26they were alive, which is another interesting aspect of them in the new
- 18:29one, which is even more night breed.
- 18:32Ryan: Yes.
- 18:32Kearns: So it just gets interesting.
- 18:35But anyway, we're not gonna spend too much time on that.
- 18:38so narcissist character, let's get into how traumatizing that can be to watch.
- 18:44How does he become one of the night breed?
- 18:46How does anybody become one of the night breed?
- 18:49Ryan: Seems like death
- 18:50Kearns: It's like death.
- 18:52Ryan: it seems like death and getting
- 18:53Kearns: It's little from column a little from column B.
- 18:56So not getting bit to death, but getting bit then dying.
- 18:59Ryan: that's how I would presume,
- 19:01Kearns: I would,
- 19:02Ryan: but it's questionable.
- 19:03Kearns: what's questionable.
- 19:04Jon: did Aaron
- 19:05Kearns: Did Aaron leaping die?
- 19:07Ryan: I, while he gets
- 19:09Kearns: I don't recall.
- 19:10He gets bit,
- 19:11Jon: He
- 19:11Kearns: he does get Bit bit
- 19:12Ryan: and then he gets shot
- 19:14Kearns: and then he gets shots of ribbon
- 19:16Ryan: Police because of Dr. P Decker.
- 19:20Kearns: deck
- 19:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:21Kearns: at p Decker.
- 19:22He's such a p decker
- 19:23Ryan: is.
- 19:24Kearns: of a doctor.
- 19:25Ryan: wonder if he
- 19:26Kearns: He does get shot to ribbons too.
- 19:27You're right.
- 19:28Yeah.
- 19:28Maybe.
- 19:29I don't know how we didn't pick up on that, John.
- 19:32Jon: Yeah.
- 19:32Kearns: That is an A, B, C.
- 19:36So yeah, Ryan.
- 19:38Ryan let us there.
- 19:39Thank you bud.
- 19:40So yeah, I guess you have to get bit and then you die.
- 19:42Get a little night breed infectivity
- 19:44Ryan: though.
- 19:45When we cover
- 19:46Kearns: and off you go.
- 19:46Jon: It's still not,
- 19:48Ryan: there's
- 19:48Jon: I'm still not sure he had to die.
- 19:51Kearns: Okay.
- 19:52So the movie itself.
- 19:55has different versions before we get into the endings.
- 19:58We were talking about this earlier.
- 19:59I don't know if it's on camera.
- 20:00We're gonna run through it again, but there's a original version
- 20:04that's the slasher, the slasher one.
- 20:06Uh, that was great in the nineties and 'cause everybody loves slashers
- 20:10in the early nineties it was, and the movie came out in what, like 93
- 20:13Ryan: 1990.
- 20:14Kearns: or something?
- 20:151990. 1990. The actual nine zero.
- 20:18Ryan: 1990.
- 20:19Kearns: When it was also good.
- 20:21So then after that, um.
- 20:24They, they distilled down a lot of what made Cabal cabal, but they
- 20:29didn't necessarily make a bad movie.
- 20:31It was a good movie with the slasher aspect, which is Dr.
- 20:35Dicker or whatever his name is.
- 20:37And he runs around this epic mask and he, he's wrecking people and it is terrifying.
- 20:44It's way more terrifying than any of the night breed scenes, in my opinion.
- 20:47When he's going through houses
- 20:49Ryan: Yes.
- 20:49Kearns: after it,
- 20:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 20:50Kearns: it really is good.
- 20:51And so there's an ending for that version, but then there's a director's
- 20:55cut, which is kind of the same as the 102 minute original slasher version.
- 21:01Ryan: It's close.
- 21:02Yes.
- 21:02Kearns: And then there's the cabal version, which is how many minutes long.
- 21:06Ryan: 159.
- 21:08Kearns: 159 minutes and has a wildly different ending, which changes
- 21:12things for our favorite character a little bit, but not much actually.
- 21:15I think the director's cut's the one that changes things for our
- 21:17favorite character, by the way.
- 21:19Not the cabal version, but we'll talk about that in a sec too.
- 21:23Yeah, and then, so that's, the listener knows that there are these three
- 21:27different versions out there that all have their different aspects.
- 21:30Okay.
- 21:31Now go with what you were gonna say about the original one.
- 21:37Ryan,
- 21:38Ryan: well, do you wanna just
- 21:41Kearns: just
- 21:41Ryan: real
- 21:42Kearns: cover each ending real quick.
- 21:44We could, I mean, if you haven't seen Night Breed, it's been 25 years.
- 21:48No, 35, sorry, huh?
- 21:51Ryan: spoiler alert.
- 21:54So,
- 21:55Kearns: Spoilers are incoming.
- 21:57Ryan: um, the original, well, the original film, the first version,
- 22:01the 102 minute, the slasher film, uh, ends with Dr. Decker's
- 22:05Kearns: with
- 22:05Ryan: that was the
- 22:07Kearns: Decker gets Dickered the first
- 22:08Ryan: He
- 22:09Kearns: greeting.
- 22:09Ryan: dickered
- 22:09Kearns: Yes, he does.
- 22:10He gets dickered and uh,
- 22:12Ryan: horrible.
- 22:13the ending.
- 22:14So
- 22:14Kearns: hated the ending.
- 22:15So they do the director's cut, which is
- 22:18Ryan: boon, kind of like,
- 22:20Kearns: who, kind of like
- 22:21Ryan: Lori.
- 22:22Kearns: where he turned.
- 22:23Lori, Lori commit suicide.
- 22:25She kills herself
- 22:27Ryan: and
- 22:27Kearns: she bites her
- 22:28Ryan: Now this
- 22:28Kearns: she turns to the Ry.
- 22:29Now this is where it becomes questionable about turning into She died first.
- 22:35Ryan: And then he
- 22:36Kearns: And then
- 22:37Ryan: and she's reanimated
- 22:39Kearns: she's reanimated
- 22:41Ryan: bend the other way around.
- 22:42You know what I
- 22:42Kearns: the other way around.
- 22:43You know what I mean?
- 22:44They should make the, they should make a rule for something like that, that you
- 22:47turn more into like a ghoul or something rather, and then make it sad for Boone
- 22:50Ryan: The gremlin rule.
- 22:52Kearns: like.
- 22:53Yeah, like Boone has a gremlin girlfriend now that he has to take
- 22:56care of because he did it badly.
- 22:59He did the bad thing.
- 23:00That would've been cool.
- 23:00Clive, where are you on that one?
- 23:02Ryan: It's a good premise, actually.
- 23:04Like
- 23:05Kearns: Yeah, where's my millions?
- 23:07I don't know.
- 23:08Haven't found 'em.
- 23:09so that's one version, but also I believe there's a, a big difference
- 23:13from the in 1 0 2, 1 of the favorite characters in the movie.
- 23:18the Reggie of Night Breed, if you will, if you've been
- 23:20following our fantasm episodes.
- 23:22Narciss, he's sitting there as, the guy that everybody loves and at the end of
- 23:28one of the versions, they kill him for added effect, like a little gut punch.
- 23:34Ryan: I saw.
- 23:35Kearns: The one I saw.
- 23:35Yeah.
- 23:36That's the first version.
- 23:37The one there.
- 23:37That's that one of them.
- 23:41No, that's the director's cut.
- 23:43They kill him.
- 23:43Yeah.
- 23:44So in the original version, he lives the director's cut version.
- 23:47They kill him and bring his head out on a stick.
- 23:49And everybody's sad because they love him.
- 23:51Narcissist or narcissist?
- 23:53No.
- 23:53And he is cool.
- 23:54and then in the cabal cut they don't kill him again because
- 23:58that honors the, the actual novel.
- 24:01So, or the actual, uh, source material.
- 24:03So because he's not dead in that, he's not dead in, in nickel ball cut.
- 24:08So Narciss is back
- 24:09Ryan: Which, if they were gonna do the trilogy as Clive
- 24:13Kearns: the trilogy at
- 24:14Ryan: that ending where
- 24:16Kearns: ending where the priest, uh, Ashbury Decker.
- 24:21Ryan: Baus is, um, blood I, that I would've been hyped for that.
- 24:27Kearns: doubt I would've been that, that would've been cool.
- 24:29Ryan: Like, like
- 24:31Kearns: Then.
- 24:31It's a night breed on night breed crimes.
- 24:33Ryan: night, breed on the
- 24:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:34I mean, bring it, bring it out.
- 24:37Bring it out.
- 24:37What's Boone doing?
- 24:38He's,
- 24:39Ryan: nothing.
- 24:40Kearns: making, he's not making logic commercials to compete
- 24:44with Steven Dorf e-cigarette ads.
- 24:48So get him out here.
- 24:50I feel like I've seen him in something recently.
- 24:52It's bothering me.
- 24:53I gotta look up his I-M-D-B-A Now while you guys chat more
- 24:57about the other versions.
- 24:59Ryan: I didn't,
- 25:01Jon: So I think I've
- 25:02Kearns: I think I seen
- 25:02Jon: the director's
- 25:03Kearns: the direct.
- 25:04Yeah.
- 25:05Ryan: Okay,
- 25:05Jon: or at least
- 25:06Kearns: Or
- 25:06Jon: I remember.
- 25:08Ryan: so you've never seen
- 25:09Kearns: Yeah.
- 25:09Ryan: cut then.
- 25:11Jon: No, I've definitely never seen the Koal cut.
- 25:14Ryan: I wonder if it's like hard to get ahold of
- 25:17Kearns: I think that it's available on, um, I think it's available on Prime.
- 25:22Not on Prime for free.
- 25:23Like you can buy it, but I'm not certain.
- 25:24Ryan: 1999.
- 25:25Kearns: I mean, they ain't cheap.
- 25:28That's kind of how they make their cash know.
- 25:31I mean, oh my God, this guy's headshot are unbelievable.
- 25:35I'm not entirely unsure.
- 25:36This man wasn't in Footloose.
- 25:39Holy hell.
- 25:41Jon: He played Richard
- 25:42Kearns: The last Richard Nixon American cars.
- 25:45You know what though?
- 25:47Good for him.
- 25:47Uh, season he was in three episodes, 2021.
- 25:52So somewhat recent.
- 25:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 25:54Kearns: Well, after I stopped watching, um, no, I can't seem to find anything
- 25:59that I would've watched where I would've been like, that was him.
- 26:02Like, I felt like it would've been like Black Hawk Down or something like that.
- 26:05You know what I mean?
- 26:05Where everybody's in it
- 26:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:07Kearns: and you just sort of lose people in it.
- 26:09Tom's new heaven, but it's NU
- 26:12Ryan: You know, I know
- 26:13Jon: Yeah.
- 26:13Ryan: this in the
- 26:14Kearns: you know,
- 26:14Ryan: intro.
- 26:15Kearns: we mentioned this in the original intro.
- 26:17I'll say it again.
- 26:18He does like Peter Green.
- 26:20Ryan: Tyrell.
- 26:21Kearns: He does.
- 26:22Ryan: does.
- 26:23Kearns: does indeed.
- 26:24He's in ritual.
- 26:25I thought it was him.
- 26:26Ryan: thought that was a typo.
- 26:28Kearns: that,
- 26:29Ryan: Like, I was like, wait a minute,
- 26:31Kearns: oh, Barker must have liked him.
- 26:33And he's in Hell Raiser Inferno too,
- 26:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:36Kearns: just 10 years later.
- 26:37But he's also in Ritual, which might be his biggest movie, biggest
- 26:41budget movie besides maybe that Hellraiser one, but that's about it.
- 26:46We got, we got a whole lot of nothing here.
- 26:48I mean, there's a ton of movies.
- 26:49They're all just hot garbage.
- 26:51All Fire in the Sky is where I remember him from.
- 26:54Okay.
- 26:54Well at least that's, that's put to bed.
- 26:57He had a nice run there in the early nineties
- 26:59Ryan: on this one.
- 27:00I, I
- 27:00Kearns: there on this one.
- 27:01Ryan: a lot of the hell raise direct to
- 27:03Kearns: A lot of the Hell Racer Direct Suit
- 27:05Ryan: stand him.
- 27:06Inferno was decent.
- 27:07And that's the one
- 27:08Kearns: Inferno was decent.
- 27:09That's the one with Greg Sheer.
- 27:10Ryan: He's
- 27:10Kearns: Yeah, that's, he's like.
- 27:12Ryan: And he finds the box, uh, the.
- 27:14In a crime scene and he solves it and he's like going back and forth between
- 27:19Kearns: Going back and forth between
- 27:21Ryan: And
- 27:21Kearns: reality and health.
- 27:22Ryan: It's got
- 27:22Kearns: Yeah.
- 27:23It got,
- 27:23Ryan: Ro,
- 27:24Kearns: it's got Nicholas
- 27:25Ryan: Doug
- 27:26Kearns: Romar,
- 27:27Ryan: got a
- 27:27Kearns: Doug Bradley.
- 27:29Mm-hmm.
- 27:31Ryan: and it's a
- 27:32Kearns: I mean, it sounds pretty good
- 27:33Ryan: decent one.
- 27:34As much as I talk shit on 'em, all
- 27:36Kearns: as
- 27:36Ryan: one's pretty decent.
- 27:39Kearns: you are.
- 27:39Not too bad.
- 27:40Um, he's not a bad actor either.
- 27:42I mean, he's not like great, but he's no worse than any of the people who rose
- 27:47to fame in the middle or late nineties.
- 27:49Action movies and things like that, except for Nicholas Cage.
- 27:51Said, anybody says anything bad about that man's acting skills
- 27:54and they gotta deal with me.
- 27:55All right.
- 27:55He was a freaking master actor throughout his entire career.
- 28:00Everything.
- 28:00He's done everything,
- 28:02Ryan: Are we gonna
- 28:02Jon: Everything.
- 28:03Kearns: everything, everything.
- 28:04Talk about snake ice.
- 28:05Jon: Everything.
- 28:06Kearns: should, we should talk about snake ice for hours because it's a masterpiece.
- 28:10Deadfall.
- 28:11Jon: Dead fall.
- 28:12Ryan: Dead fall?
- 28:13Kearns: Yeah.
- 28:14Jon: I
- 28:14Kearns: What about it
- 28:15Jon: you to watch all of
- 28:16Kearns: to watch All Dead.
- 28:18Jon: I challenge
- 28:19Kearns: bet you he has worse movies than dead.
- 28:21Fall
- 28:22Jon: all hour and 45
- 28:24Kearns: all hour, 45 minutes of dead.
- 28:27Jon: especially
- 28:27Kearns: Especially the
- 28:29Jon: he's
- 28:29Kearns: half an hour's dead.
- 28:32Ryan: When he is not
- 28:32Kearns: Oh, well then I'm just gonna have long legs on, on the side, but
- 28:35just loop the first 10 minutes of long legs over and over again four times.
- 28:39Jon: When he's dead and Charlie Sheen shows up looking like Colonel Sanders,
- 28:44I challenge you to finish dead fall.
- 28:48Kearns: I'll, I will, I'll do it.
- 28:52Ryan: you.
- 28:52Kearns: I mean, you have standards, John,
- 28:54Jon: I have, sir. I have no standards.
- 29:00Kearns: but Nicholas Cage's, um, infamy.
- 29:03Aside.
- 29:05Yeah.
- 29:06Boone, I mean, Boone, I almost called him Boone.
- 29:09She's pretty good actor.
- 29:10It's like I said, there's nothing wrong with him, but he fell off.
- 29:12I don't know if he, he got into stuff in real life.
- 29:14I really don't care either.
- 29:16Uh, people have their lives, but he could have been in
- 29:18more, he could have done more.
- 29:19Jon: he kind of
- 29:20Kearns: That would've been cool.
- 29:21Jon: Stephen Dorf once Stephen
- 29:24Kearns: Maybe.
- 29:25Jon: to take those roles.
- 29:27Kearns: I mean, you're not wrong.
- 29:28That would be where he would've gone and like one of the two
- 29:32of them went to Harvey's office
- 29:35Ryan: listen, I can't
- 29:37Kearns: and it doesn't seem like it was Craig.
- 29:38Ryan: see Craig as Deacon Frost though.
- 29:40Kearns: Craig.
- 29:42Ryan: I Come on now.
- 29:46Kearns: Oh, you can't, and there's a reason for that.
- 29:50Ryan: God dammit.
- 29:51Weinstein.
- 29:54Kearns: You're self a bitch, which you did.
- 29:57But, um, on a serious note, what he did was terrible and I don't condone it.
- 30:00And also Steven Dorf is pretty good actor too, but like on par with Craig
- 30:05Scheffer, um, who did, I mean, I could see Dorf in this role, no problem.
- 30:12Um, Scheffer himself though, I mean, he was in a few early, like late eighties
- 30:18movies, early nineties movies, and then he fell off, which is fine, but
- 30:22they should have made this a trilogy.
- 30:23Barker maybe couldn't get the funding for it.
- 30:26Maybe he just didn't like that the studio butchered it the first time around
- 30:29and he, and he allowed that to happen.
- 30:31I don't know.
- 30:32But they let it die after the first movie
- 30:34Ryan: that.
- 30:35Um, he kind of had a fight with the studio about how it came
- 30:38about and how it was produced.
- 30:40Advertised, as well as,
- 30:42Kearns: advertised, as well as, um.
- 30:44Ryan: how it was filmed and edited.
- 30:45It
- 30:46Kearns: It was filmed and edited.
- 30:47Ryan: that you
- 30:47Kearns: It was supposed to be a trilogy that you were saying.
- 30:49So they canned it from that,
- 30:51Ryan: they're
- 30:51Kearns: and then
- 30:52Ryan: it now with
- 30:52Kearns: they're trying to revive it now with a TV series,
- 30:55Ryan: Clive Barker
- 30:56Kearns: I think by Barker.
- 30:58And the, uh, production company,
- 31:00Ryan: Morgan Creek Productions,
- 31:02Kearns: Morgan Creek Productions,
- 31:04Ryan: they're
- 31:04Kearns: uh, made amends.
- 31:05Ryan: series,
- 31:06Kearns: to come out with a TV series, but
- 31:08Ryan: They
- 31:08Kearns: still up in the air.
- 31:09Ryan: writing
- 31:10Kearns: I have a guy from sci-fi writing it, and I'm already like, yeah.
- 31:14'cause they're known for their great writers.
- 31:16The sci-fi channel.
- 31:19They are Sharknado eight.
- 31:22The 80th.
- 31:25Ryan: What
- 31:26Kearns: right.
- 31:26Uh, let's do,
- 31:27Ryan: it, I was gonna say, it could have worked.
- 31:29Kearns: I was gonna say it could have worked.
- 31:31Ryan: in
- 31:31Kearns: I feel like nine three in itself too is a two.
- 31:34The director's pilot.
- 31:35Ryan: can lead to a
- 31:36Kearns: Yeah, a hundred percent could have been six.
- 31:38Six hours of content easily
- 31:40Ryan: Yes.
- 31:41Kearns: those movies.
- 31:41For three movies.
- 31:43Um, and like I said, the untapped potentials in the different night.
- 31:46Breeded characters that are awesome.
- 31:48Like, let's have some fun.
- 31:51I want you to describe one of your favorite night breed characters
- 31:53without using their real name.
- 31:55And I'm gonna go first.
- 31:56Forehead tumor.
- 31:57Big guy.
- 31:59You know who I'm talking about.
- 32:01You know who I'm talking about?
- 32:04Yeah.
- 32:05Ryan: Crescent Moon guy.
- 32:06Kearns: Right.
- 32:06Okay.
- 32:08Crescent?
- 32:08No, he's forehead tumor.
- 32:09Big guy.
- 32:12Ryan: Alright.
- 32:13Kearns: John.
- 32:13Which one of yours?
- 32:14Jon: Sexy quill lady.
- 32:16Kearns: Sexy.
- 32:16Cool lady.
- 32:17He is too.
- 32:18Ryan: that was
- 32:19Kearns: You know, you would go in, you, you know it would hurt, but you would
- 32:22Jon: Oh, oh yeah.
- 32:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:25Jon: Yeah.
- 32:26Ryan: Have
- 32:27Jon: Smash.
- 32:27Ryan: have you
- 32:28Kearns: Have you just been print?
- 32:32No, but you know who has Steven Dorf?
- 32:36Yeah.
- 32:38Yeah.
- 32:38We're going back to that.
- 32:42Ryan: Is there a red syringe, a yellow
- 32:44Kearns: These aren't even Weinstein adjacent films.
- 32:46That's my favorite part.
- 32:47Weinstein has nothing to do with any of this.
- 32:49Jon: Nothing,
- 32:50Kearns: Nothing.
- 32:51Not even the same studio.
- 32:52Ryan: wasn't even in the vibe.
- 32:54He was trying to make it still
- 32:55Kearns: was trying.
- 32:56Ryan: time.
- 32:56So
- 32:57Kearns: Yeah.
- 32:57This is before his like fingers refused together by lard.
- 33:01This is, he was a young man.
- 33:04Ryan: it is a young, young man
- 33:05Kearns: All right, Ryan,
- 33:08Ryan: I would have to go with,
- 33:09Kearns: who's your favorite night breed character?
- 33:10Ryan: the one who goes through smoke,
- 33:13Kearns: Oh, that's another good choice.
- 33:16Jon: Yep.
- 33:17Ryan: good old rose.
- 33:18Kearns: Too easy though.
- 33:20No, that's why, that just proves my point and I'm so happy you said that.
- 33:23Thank you.
- 33:24They could have done side stories, they could have done graphic
- 33:27novels like this, which went in the direction of each one of these Marvel
- 33:32Universe style, DC Universe style.
- 33:34Ryan: have
- 33:35Kearns: They
- 33:35Ryan: and.
- 33:36Kearns: comic
- 33:37Ryan: Uh, stories out there from
- 33:38Kearns: stories out there from
- 33:40Ryan: stories, but they have
- 33:42Kearns: Oh, fan made.
- 33:43But they have actual,
- 33:43Ryan: actual like
- 33:44Kearns: have fan made and actual, like
- 33:47Jon: Oh,
- 33:48Kearns: the actual ones more.
- 33:49Oh, I hope it's, I hope it's Dark horse.
- 33:52No, it's not.
- 33:53Jon: Oh, it's de If it's on Reddit it,
- 33:56Kearns: It's on Reddit.
- 33:57Jon: definitely written erotic, night breed
- 33:59Kearns: Tic.
- 34:01Well, that I don't disagree with, but that doesn't have anything
- 34:03to do with the Reddit part.
- 34:06As a, as a frequent redditer, I must say that I object.
- 34:10I think that that might be the case, my friend.
- 34:12Ryan: NSFW
- 34:13Kearns: There's.
- 34:14Ryan: safe for work.
- 34:17Kearns: No,
- 34:18Ryan: it.
- 34:19Kearns: no, TDLR.
- 34:21But I will say this, I'm glad that people made it.
- 34:25I'm a huge fan of the SP Secure Contain Protect.
- 34:28If you guys aren't familiar with that, it's completely fan made, around the
- 34:32same concept, which is a organization much like the c, like the men in black
- 34:36would be, but scaled up for, for all sorts of threats to humanity from
- 34:43different dimensions, outer space, terrestrial on earth, what have you.
- 34:47And they have to contain them, destroy them if they can, but contain them
- 34:50if they can't, and protect humanity.
- 34:52And people create their own.
- 34:53It's all fan made Wiki.
- 34:55And the favorites of those have gone on to become animated
- 34:58YouTube shorts and everything.
- 35:00Like if you just look up SCP 0 9 6, you're gonna be, there's endless hours
- 35:05of entertainment on just that one.
- 35:07There's a million.
- 35:08So that concept that people did, fan made for this just makes, just
- 35:15makes sense to me because it's a cool concept and it's an unfinished story.
- 35:19They didn't finish it and that sucks.
- 35:20Well, I guess Barker did, but
- 35:22Ryan: No.
- 35:22Kearns: they didn't finish it.
- 35:24Ryan: Uh,
- 35:24Kearns: No.
- 35:24Oh, he never did actually finish this.
- 35:26Ryan: spoiler, spoiler.
- 35:28I don't know
- 35:28Kearns: Spoiler.
- 35:28Ryan: is.
- 35:29Uh,
- 35:30Kearns: Spoiler.
- 35:31Ryan: Um, book ends the same way as the director's cut.
- 35:36So he was,
- 35:37Kearns: All right.
- 35:38Ryan: I
- 35:38Kearns: So.
- 35:38Ryan: might be writing a sequel.
- 35:40There's rumors.
- 35:42It's a George or Martin situation.
- 35:44I'm just producing.
- 35:46Hell raise films for the rest of my life while still writing the sequel to a ball.
- 35:52Gonna call it Porcupine.
- 35:54Kearns: checks.
- 35:55I can't write too quickly because my, my writing hand is my check cashing
- 35:59hand, so I must continue to cash these.
- 36:01Hell raise checks.
- 36:03Ryan: He's gonna
- 36:03Kearns: Write with my other hand.
- 36:04Ryan: listen to this and, or watch this and send us an email and be like, you
- 36:08Kearns: I mean,
- 36:09Ryan: be like that.
- 36:09Do
- 36:10Kearns: we're gonna get our asses beat by Harvey.
- 36:13Yeah, it'll be hard.
- 36:14Harvey's gonna come outta prison and Dittle one of us, and Clive Barker's
- 36:17gonna come and give one of us a black eye
- 36:19Ryan: no, I'm, I'm going
- 36:21Kearns: and the.
- 36:21Ryan: the Harvey from Entourage.
- 36:23What do you mean?
- 36:26Kearns: You got that scene.
- 36:27Jon: Bring
- 36:28Kearns: one of the most memorable.
- 36:29I was gonna say, yeah, of course you say bring it Clive.
- 36:32That would be good for you actually.
- 36:34But you forget about Harvey's line earlier.
- 36:36When he sees him in the bathroom, he sees him in the bathroom first.
- 36:40He's washing his hands and he says there's nothing like a good shit.
- 36:44It's one of the most iconic lines in the freaking show and it's very Weinstein.
- 36:50Ryan: with him.
- 36:50What do you mean you got a
- 36:51Kearns: I lunch with them,
- 36:52Ryan: it's, it's between breakfast and lunch.
- 36:54You got a brunch.
- 36:54You didn't
- 36:55Kearns: breakfast, lunch, you got a brunch, you didn't get shit.
- 36:59It's freaking show.
- 37:00But yeah, man, there's just, uh, they should have done more with it.
- 37:04There's so much cash that they could have made, if you want to think of it that way.
- 37:08They could have made a ton of money, but more so they could have just spun out.
- 37:11Much better story.
- 37:14I'm almost glad the fan base has the reins now.
- 37:18Ryan: I
- 37:18Jon: Yeah.
- 37:19Ryan: I think it can go both ways in this situation.
- 37:21I think it's definitely like there's serious and
- 37:25Kearns: Serious and there is sexual serious.
- 37:31I'm not really sure where you're going with this, Ryan.
- 37:33Ryan: so going
- 37:34Kearns: No,
- 37:35Ryan: there's like a serious to
- 37:36Kearns: going with like, there's like a series
- 37:37Ryan: not
- 37:37Kearns: but there's like that n see for work situation.
- 37:41Ryan: can't be
- 37:41Kearns: Oh no, I'm not going there.
- 37:42People are gonna be perverts with anything I'm talking about.
- 37:45Just continuing on with the story as far as like making content.
- 37:50You foul creature,
- 37:52Jon: No,
- 37:53Kearns: you said that the creepiest way possible
- 37:55Jon: tell me more about the NSFW versions.
- 38:00Kearns: we're gonna, we're gonna do like a after these or like we'll be
- 38:03right back kind of thing and it's just gonna be you two on screen.
- 38:07Like, well, Martin left, he's done with this, but Quill
- 38:13creature aside and all that.
- 38:16Um, yeah.
- 38:18It's just for those of you who are in the know, great.
- 38:20If you're not in the know, watch the movie.
- 38:22Watch the original one too.
- 38:23It's not bad.
- 38:24Watch the 102 minute long version.
- 38:26Um, words hard for me.
- 38:29102 minute long version, the original, and start there and see what we were
- 38:34talking about, about the slasher part.
- 38:36But you also get a great idea about what they're doing in Midian, and, and now I'm
- 38:40saying it like it's Midian and, um, the night breed, the, in that version as well.
- 38:45And you're gonna see, like, you wanna learn more about these different
- 38:47characters, where they came from, what made their skills, their skills.
- 38:52And you get a little taste of that in the cabal version.
- 38:55There is way more about the night breed in that version, but it's still not enough.
- 39:01Ryan: of a mythology and there's.
- 39:04Kearns: So you could read too, if you're a loser.
- 39:06Ryan: That's no
- 39:08Kearns: Yeah,
- 39:09Ryan: read,
- 39:11Kearns: that's true.
- 39:12Ryan: right?
- 39:13Kearns: I feel better about myself now.
- 39:14Ryan: Reading is for everyone.
- 39:17All right.
- 39:18Kearns: What are you reading right now?
- 39:19Ryan: Kujo,
- 39:19Kearns: know, you, I'm glad you picked up that book.
- 39:21He didn't, he doesn't have a lot of money, so you're really helping him out with it.
- 39:24Ryan: I listen.
- 39:26Jon: It's good.
- 39:26It's good that you're uplifting the unknown authors of the
- 39:29Kearns: Yeah,
- 39:30Ryan: I'm trying.
- 39:31Stephen King
- 39:32Kearns: I'm trying.
- 39:32Stephen King is very un unknown.
- 39:34You know what though?
- 39:34If, if you're reading a king book and it's Cujo and anybody gives
- 39:37you crap, kick him in the junk.
- 39:38Cujo is a good, it's a, that's a niche read.
- 39:41Even for King.
- 39:42Ryan: the only horror book I feel I've read
- 39:44Kearns: The Only
- 39:44Ryan: was Salem's Lot
- 39:45Kearns: Him.
- 39:46Ryan: Cemetery was definitely a family drama.
- 39:48And then Cujo is definitely another family drama.
- 39:51All right?
- 39:52Kearns: It's that tar road.
- 39:53Yeah, that's, you're not too far off.
- 39:55It's kind of like stamp stamp, um, with some animal cruelty thrown in.
- 39:59Wait a second.
- 40:00It's in both.
- 40:01But yeah, man.
- 40:03Um, not to get into a, if, if we tangent into a king, it's gonna be a
- 40:06long night, so we're not gonna do that.
- 40:08Ryan: Oh,
- 40:09Kearns: Barker's Barker's got tons of his own novels.
- 40:12Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 40:12Kearns: Um, we talked about Mr. Be Gone Hellbound heart.
- 40:16Mr. Begon, um, is the one that I liked.
- 40:19That's weird.
- 40:19It's written entirely in the second person to the reader by a demon
- 40:23that's trapped inside of the book,
- 40:25Ryan: cool.
- 40:25Kearns: it's telling you how it got trapped in the book and it's trying to get
- 40:28you to trick you into letting it escape.
- 40:30I feel like he could have been better, but the concept's so cool.
- 40:33It's worth a read.
- 40:35Like if nothing, if Clyde Barker had never done anything else,
- 40:38that's pretty, that's a pretty good legacy in and of itself right there.
- 40:42Um, Hellbound Heart, what's that like?
- 40:44Ryan: Bound Heart.
- 40:44It's
- 40:45Kearns: Hellbound Heart?
- 40:46It's very similar to I, it's hell,
- 40:48Ryan: it's different
- 40:49Kearns: but it's
- 40:49Ryan: the idea
- 40:50Kearns: because of the idea of like
- 40:52Ryan: there's really no
- 40:53Kearns: thin heads.
- 40:54There's really no names.
- 40:55They're just fic.
- 40:56Ryan: dimension.
- 40:56And it's more of
- 40:57Kearns: I like the centa bytes.
- 40:58You dip 'em in the cent sauce and you just eat it up.
- 41:00Ryan: uh.
- 41:01Kearns: yummy.
- 41:01Jon: Oh yeah.
- 41:02And
- 41:02Ryan: always warm,
- 41:04Jon: that, that
- 41:05Kearns: It sounds like it's always warm.
- 41:07What?
- 41:08Why are you so in like, you're on that train tonight, man.
- 41:12You're killing me.
- 41:13I was ready to make some fricking General Mills jokes and everything
- 41:17and it just got so filthy.
- 41:18I don't wanna go near it anymore.
- 41:19Jon: I mean, you just di dip those eno bytes into that white
- 41:24creamy sauce and just lick it up.
- 41:29Kearns: After these messages,
- 41:31Ryan: but I feel like the
- 41:32Kearns: be right back.
- 41:33Ryan: bytes in the
- 41:34Kearns: Eno bytes
- 41:35Ryan: more
- 41:35Kearns: in the book are
- 41:36Ryan: the remake,
- 41:37Kearns: Yeah,
- 41:37Ryan: captures the book more because,
- 41:40Kearns: because,
- 41:41Ryan: technically,
- 41:42Kearns: pinhead technically, or
- 41:43Ryan: still
- 41:44Kearns: think pinhead,
- 41:45Ryan: it's been a minute since I read it.
- 41:46Um,
- 41:48Kearns: um,
- 41:49Ryan: a child's voice
- 41:50Kearns: a child's voice
- 41:52Ryan: and
- 41:52Kearns: and it's a woman
- 41:53Ryan: the
- 41:53Kearns: and that's definitely what's in the reading.
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:56Ryan: The only thing that's close
- 41:57Kearns: The only thing that's close
- 41:58Ryan: Barker
- 41:59Kearns: to what pipe partner put on screen is basically the chatter and butterball.
- 42:08Oh.
- 42:08Ryan: first introduced in berserk,
- 42:14and my heart will go on.
- 42:17Um,
- 42:18Kearns: Just going to bed guys.
- 42:20Just going to
- 42:21Ryan: Gina's already in bed.
- 42:22Kearns: bed's already in bed?
- 42:24Yeah,
- 42:24Ryan: she's gonna probably watch this, but I
- 42:26Kearns: probably watch.
- 42:27Ryan: I'm hoping she's asleep so I can
- 42:29Kearns: I'm hoping she sleeps.
- 42:30Ryan: Like I,
- 42:31Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 42:32Ryan: watch the
- 42:32Kearns: Good for you.
- 42:34Ryan: and I have to catch up on a couple ever episodes of severance.
- 42:38This past weekend was
- 42:39Kearns: I thought that we saved the conversations about drugging
- 42:43our wives for after the podcast.
- 42:45Ryan: you weren't supposed to talk to,
- 42:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 42:47Jon: have to.
- 42:50Ryan: He's already
- 42:51Kearns: Okay.
- 42:51Well, when I was dying downstairs, and I've been bitching about this
- 42:54for two days, so I don't care if she hears it when I was dying downstairs,
- 42:58like with my throat swollen shut.
- 43:01No, nobody but one of the cats and my youngest child came in once.
- 43:04He was like, what are you doing in here, daddy?
- 43:06I was like, and then he ran away.
- 43:09'cause he was, he was legitimately frightened.
- 43:11And when the cat came over and was like, I smell death on you.
- 43:13And then it went away and that was it.
- 43:16That was just on my own.
- 43:18He was, as long as the lights are on, nobody cares.
- 43:21Nobody cares.
- 43:22The electricity went out.
- 43:23They would've come downstairs to see what's wrong
- 43:24Ryan: throwing cans of soup down there, just rolling
- 43:27Kearns: down there.
- 43:28Just down
- 43:29Ryan: I warm this
- 43:29Kearns: the, yeah.
- 43:30How do I,
- 43:30Ryan: No.
- 43:31Kearns: Nope.
- 43:32This starvation.
- 43:33Starvation and sadness and pain.
- 43:36I had to drive myself to urgent care
- 43:41anyway.
- 43:42Nobody cares.
- 43:43Um, so before my rude wife interrupted us by going to sleep, you were in the
- 43:49process of telling us something about cinnamon bun Bites, no CIN bytes.
- 43:55I believe.
- 43:56Ryan: Ah, I was just basically saying that
- 43:57Kearns: I would say that they're,
- 43:59Ryan: in a way, they're more mysterious
- 44:01Kearns: a way, they're more mysterious while in the movie,
- 44:03they're right in front of you for the viewer because it gives you the
- 44:06Ryan: you the
- 44:06Kearns: idea, even
- 44:07Ryan: The
- 44:07Kearns: back story.
- 44:08Ryan: is just
- 44:09Kearns: first one is just like
- 44:12Ryan: You don't
- 44:12Kearns: the mystery.
- 44:13Ryan: they
- 44:13Kearns: You don't know what they are, they're just
- 44:15Ryan: inter
- 44:16Kearns: Trump is inter dimension, which is now, yeah.
- 44:19Um,
- 44:19Ryan: opening scene, which
- 44:20Kearns: Frank's opening scene, which is in the first film
- 44:24Ryan: compared to the book, is
- 44:25Kearns: compared to the exactly the same.
- 44:27Okay.
- 44:27Which,
- 44:28Ryan: I mean, it helps that Clyde Barker
- 44:29Kearns: I mean it helps that
- 44:30Ryan: too,
- 44:31Kearns: directed the film to, but
- 44:33Ryan: him
- 44:33Kearns: to see him write it and then.
- 44:36Ryan: pretty cool,
- 44:36Kearns: Film is pretty cool, especially for 1987.
- 44:40Yeah, that is cool.
- 44:42All right, um, let's jump back over from c Clive Barker's
- 44:47books that we liked into Nire.
- 44:48John, is there anything else about the films that you wanna bring
- 44:51up from your handy dandy notes?
- 44:54Jon: Well, one thing I
- 44:56Kearns: One thing
- 44:57Jon: think we maybe talked
- 44:58Kearns: we talked about,
- 44:59Jon: part that's not gonna make it onto the, the show, but, um,
- 45:03Kearns: um, just
- 45:04Jon: Decker
- 45:05Kearns: Decker character played by, I thought that was gonna make it, is it
- 45:09when we talked about him getting Dickered?
- 45:11Is that why we can't put it on?
- 45:12Jon: I don't know.
- 45:13I thought, I don't remember when we
- 45:15Kearns: Remember.
- 45:15Jon: about it.
- 45:15Think it might have been in the, be the part that we're we lost at the beginning.
- 45:19Ryan: We lost it and we, I think we were, we made a, a comment about it
- 45:24and then we were like, we're gonna
- 45:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:26Ryan: it, and then it got cut.
- 45:27Kearns: We might be able to import it and if we import it, make sure it's 46 minutes
- 45:31in, so we should pop it right here.
- 45:33Jon: Well, now we've got it in,
- 45:35Kearns: Yeah, there you go.
- 45:35So if, if it worked out everybody.
- 45:37Ryan: It'll be a
- 45:38Kearns: There you go.
- 45:40Yeah.
- 45:41Oh, he did.
- 45:42He said the thing that we talk about.
- 45:45Okay.
- 45:45Jon: just a, just a couple
- 45:46Kearns: Just a couple of things
- 45:47Jon: jumped out to me.
- 45:48Kearns: that out to me, like
- 45:49Jon: like an
- 45:50Kearns: is like an
- 45:50Jon: sort of
- 45:51Kearns: sort of thing.
- 45:52Yeah.
- 45:52But
- 45:53Jon: has anyone
- 45:53Kearns: has anyone ever really, truly the question, what was your
- 45:57relationship with the deceased?
- 46:00Jon: We were lovers.
- 46:02anybody
- 46:02Kearns: Anybody ever really answer questions like that?
- 46:05Not anymore, but like in the fifties or sixties when you could have a family
- 46:08three blocks away and nobody would notice.
- 46:11Yeah.
- 46:11That was like, my mistress lives over there.
- 46:13My wife and children live over here.
- 46:16And that's the lady I bang on the side.
- 46:18Like there was like, there's like all three
- 46:21Jon: and then the
- 46:21Kearns: and.
- 46:22Jon: thing that really me at the, the
- 46:25Kearns: I don't know how they did it.
- 46:26Jon: as the cops have descended on Midian and they're wrecking,
- 46:30Kearns: yeah, that's true.
- 46:33Jon: You have berserkers
- 46:34Kearns: Bers, and you held them.
- 46:36Jon: like you didn't
- 46:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 46:37Jon: berserkers earlier.
- 46:39Ryan: control him.
- 46:40Kearns: that that is the dumbest thing.
- 46:41Yeah.
- 46:42That's the dumbest thing though.
- 46:43Jon: mean, at that point, who cares if you can control 'em or not?
- 46:45You're dying?
- 46:47Kearns: I'm glad that you brought that up.
- 46:48'cause if we had ended this episode without talking about the ending, first
- 46:51of all, it, whenever they do these fantasy things and stuff, the metaphor usually
- 46:55crumbles when they bring automatic weapons and shotguns and flashlights down into the
- 46:59cave and just start blasting the creature.
- 47:02And in this case, creatures that we've all grown to love in Meridian.
- 47:06So yeah, they, the night breed are getting slaughtered, but they do
- 47:09have a Trump card that John's talking about, which are these insane versions
- 47:14of themselves called Berserkers.
- 47:15Now what is a berserker?
- 47:17And don't sing the song.
- 47:18I know you want to.
- 47:20Jon: Would you like some making
- 47:24Kearns: What makes you a Berserker night breed?
- 47:27That hurts so much to do, by the way,
- 47:28Jon: a night breed?
- 47:30Kearns: RS.
- 47:30Jon: I
- 47:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 47:32Jon: basically, you know, the mutated.
- 47:35Night breed monster, but ultra violent, uncontrollable, and massive.
- 47:40Kearns: And did they ever explain in the movie why some of them turn out that way?
- 47:45Ryan: No,
- 47:45Jon: I
- 47:45Kearns: I.
- 47:46Jon: they did.
- 47:47Ryan: I,
- 47:47Kearns: No, just like you, anybody rolls the dice and you
- 47:50could be a Berserker night breed.
- 47:52Ryan: be in the
- 47:53Kearns: That'd be pretty cool.
- 47:53Ryan: be, to be funny, it's just true.
- 47:57Kearns: Funny.
- 47:57It's just true.
- 47:58I think it was gonna be the,
- 47:59Ryan: it.
- 47:59I mean,
- 48:00Kearns: they were gonna build it.
- 48:01I mean, because it's so mysterious.
- 48:03Like, we don't talk about the berserkers, we don't let 'em go
- 48:06Ryan: they're
- 48:06Kearns: and
- 48:07Ryan: and it's
- 48:07Kearns: they're uncontrollable and it's like, alright,
- 48:10Ryan: Give it, give it to me.
- 48:12Kearns: so instead of running behind where they are and having like, had a plan way
- 48:16ahead of time because they are in hiding.
- 48:18So like, okay, so if the, if the cops ever do show up, we just hide behind here.
- 48:23We open this gate, we'd swing shut in front of us and the berserkers then
- 48:27run this way and eat anything that's in front like a, it could, a third
- 48:30grader could come up with that plan.
- 48:32Jon: Yeah.
- 48:33Kearns: Kevin from home alone would've done a better job than they did
- 48:37with the cops storm in this place.
- 48:39Ryan: Tommy from
- 48:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 48:41Ryan: two guys, uh, fantasm three.
- 48:43I'm sorry,
- 48:45Kearns: That's a good reference though, given there's two
- 48:47episodes ago, three episodes ago.
- 48:50Yeah, that's true.
- 48:52So, yeah, no, John brought up a good point there.
- 48:56Um, so they, they didn't, they didn't utilize the berserkers, they flirt with
- 49:01the idea that they have this sort of seat, seemingly ultimate weapon that they can't
- 49:06control and they never really utilize it.
- 49:08They open it, they do let 'em out,
- 49:10Jon: Yeah.
- 49:11Kearns: but it's too late to kind of save half of them or more.
- 49:14Ryan: don't even, they save like a
- 49:16Kearns: They don't even a quarter.
- 49:17Ryan: A
- 49:18Kearns: Yeah.
- 49:18Ryan: in
- 49:18Kearns: It's a, it's a genocide.
- 49:21A quarter's left in the barn.
- 49:22Yeah.
- 49:22It's a genocide.
- 49:23It is.
- 49:25And when you think about it like that, it's kind of not
- 49:27as funny or fun to talk about,
- 49:29Ryan: walking
- 49:30Kearns: like
- 49:30Ryan: the
- 49:31Kearns: walking and the bodies are everywhere.
- 49:33Open war zone
- 49:34Ryan: it's just
- 49:35Kearns: and
- 49:35Ryan: many, how many night
- 49:36Kearns: how many, how many night breeders saved.
- 49:38Ryan: much?
- 49:39Kearns: This much, this many, this many.
- 49:47It's dark.
- 49:47It is dark, dark fantasy.
- 49:50But, um, what else John is on your mind?
- 49:54Jon: Um, I think we
- 49:55Kearns: I think we pretty much
- 49:56Jon: what
- 49:56Kearns: have
- 49:57Jon: through
- 49:57Kearns: bouncing through my mind.
- 49:58I mean, I have,
- 49:59Jon: note
- 49:59Kearns: a note about, um,
- 50:01Jon: walking up
- 50:02Kearns: walking up to your significant other with that
- 50:04Jon: fricking
- 50:05Kearns: fricking sword
- 50:06Jon: through
- 50:06Kearns: plunge through your chest
- 50:08Jon: her
- 50:09Kearns: asking her to pull it out for you.
- 50:11Jon: they.
- 50:11Kearns: You know,
- 50:11Jon: I and I, I get that.
- 50:13It's not a sword, it's a knife.
- 50:14And cro, like a
- 50:15Kearns: like acod.
- 50:16Jon: knife, crocodile Dundee would approve of that knife.
- 50:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:20It's a mae,
- 50:20Ryan: that
- 50:20Jon: you, you have that like
- 50:22Kearns: it's a long knife.
- 50:23Jon: you.
- 50:24you're impelled on that, and you're
- 50:27Kearns: like a bayonet, your girlfriend.
- 50:29Jon: it out,
- 50:30Kearns: Now, my wife would then tell me the medical term for what it's called.
- 50:34When you have an item stabbed through you and it's keeping you alive.
- 50:38Your wife might do the same, John, and it's keeping you alive because you're not
- 50:41bleeding out when it isn't pulled out yet.
- 50:43But the second you pull it out, that effect goes away and then you bleed out.
- 50:47So she would say that, and then I would die in front of her.
- 50:50Ryan: dead.
- 50:51Jon: I think my, I, I think my
- 50:53Kearns: I think my wife would tell me exactly
- 50:55Jon: was
- 50:56Kearns: what was wrong with me, and I'd say
- 50:58Jon: take care of it
- 50:58Kearns: take care of it yourself.
- 51:00Wow.
- 51:00Jon: You're a
- 51:01Kearns: But Kim did
- 51:02Jon: it.
- 51:02Kearns: do it.
- 51:03My wife did lift a tree, a sizable tree, about a quarter of an inch, which,
- 51:09which is like the equivalent of a mother lifting a car off of a child if you like,
- 51:14ratio the love, you know what I mean?
- 51:16So it worked out and that quarter of an inch was just enough for me to get my
- 51:21broken ribs out from under that tree.
- 51:23So there you go.
- 51:24So I think she would, she.
- 51:25Jon: knock the tree on top of me.
- 51:29Kearns: But if she knew that pulling, if she did not know that pulling
- 51:31the knife out of me would kill me, she would totally rip it outta me.
- 51:35She's, she's here to play.
- 51:38She's not, she's not messing around.
- 51:40And then she would watch me bleed out and be like, oh, we made, we made mistakes.
- 51:44And that'd be the end
- 51:45Jon: Mistakes were made.
- 51:46Kearns: mistakes were made.
- 51:47Where's the life insurance policy before you black out?
- 51:49Where is it?
- 51:51Ryan: Go
- 51:51Kearns: But
- 51:51Ryan: Kinison mode on you.
- 51:52Kearns: um,
- 51:53Ryan: that?
- 51:53Jon: Jokes
- 51:54Kearns: yo,
- 51:54Jon: There isn't one.
- 51:56Kearns: but, uh, that's night breed everybody.
- 51:58It's a great movie.
- 51:59You have to watch it.
- 52:00Um, I think we're gonna roll it 53 minutes in plus possibly three and
- 52:04a half minutes of content that got pulled from the beginning earlier.
- 52:08I think it's time to roll into our top fives.
- 52:11Ryan: it is.
- 52:11And I am
- 52:12Kearns: Yes.
- 52:12It's, and it's, it, it's, it's a good idea for us to, to use the time wisely.
- 52:18All right.
- 52:18All right.
- 52:20Ryan: we got
- 52:20Kearns: These, these top fives are getting rid god damn ridiculous.
- 52:24Ryan: Well, gonna love my top five.
- 52:26It's
- 52:26Kearns: Love my top five
- 52:28Ryan: And that's,
- 52:29Kearns: accused.
- 52:29Oh, nice.
- 52:30And that's also,
- 52:31Ryan: the
- 52:31Kearns: it's also
- 52:31Ryan: Nielsen
- 52:32Kearns: to
- 52:33Ryan: wrongfully Accused, which
- 52:34Kearns: wrongfully accused, which is a great comedy.
- 52:37Ryan: great film, the Fugitive.
- 52:38Kearns: great film.
- 52:39The Fugitive.
- 52:39Ryan: I digress.
- 52:41Um, so my top five is wrongfully
- 52:43Kearns: regress.
- 52:44That was great.
- 52:44Ryan: regress.
- 52:45I'm sorry, I regress.
- 52:46We're leaving that in.
- 52:47Kearns: No, I meant like regress.
- 52:49Talk more about wrongfully Accused.
- 52:50I don't actually do, 'cause it's an amazing movie.
- 52:52If you haven't seen it, guys, it's one of, it's a hidden gem with Leslie Nielsen.
- 52:57It really is.
- 52:57Ryan: a one
- 52:58Kearns: Good movie.
- 52:58Ryan: armed, one-legged man, nose, one eye
- 53:05goes out through the
- 53:06Kearns: My uncle, Kevin's one of my favorite humans ever.
- 53:08And he, he would laugh so hard at the stupidest shit from Mel Brooks movies
- 53:12and Liam, uh, I must say Liam Neeson movies and Leslie Nielsen movies.
- 53:17And that line, he was about on the ground.
- 53:20He was about on the ground
- 53:21Ryan: know
- 53:22Kearns: that one.
- 53:22The one armed, one-eyed, one nose, one ear.
- 53:25Ryan: I say
- 53:26Kearns: Um,
- 53:26Ryan: made that face 'cause he is
- 53:27Kearns: John that face,
- 53:28Ryan: me
- 53:29Kearns: not,
- 53:29Ryan: Liam Neeson and Naked Gun and they're gonna kill that franchise.
- 53:36Kearns: yeah, we're not gonna talk about that.
- 53:38All right, you're top five.
- 53:39Ryan: So top five for
- 53:41Kearns: That's for next episode.
- 53:43Ryan: Um, so the first one, number
- 53:45Kearns: So the first one, number five came out in June, 1995.
- 53:50Ryan: Armand Deante, Rob Schneider,
- 53:52Kearns: Deante, Rob Schneider,
- 53:54Ryan: Max Vons.
- 53:54Kearns: Lane, and Max,
- 53:56Ryan: It's,
- 53:56Kearns: what a piece of ass that Rob Schneider is too.
- 53:59Ryan: it's young, Rob
- 54:00Kearns: You thought I was gonna say Diane Lane thought I was gonna
- 54:02say Diane Lane, but I didn't.
- 54:03Ryan: he is the law because it's judge dread
- 54:06Kearns: Which is interesting because this is a horror podcast.
- 54:08Ryan: so I was talking to
- 54:10Kearns: It, so I was talking to
- 54:11Ryan: and
- 54:12Kearns: about this too, and uh, you know, I said I was gonna flip it.
- 54:15Ryan: sci-fi
- 54:16Kearns: like,
- 54:17Ryan: action and,
- 54:19Kearns: throw some romcoms in there.
- 54:20Let's just have some fun with it.
- 54:21You know,
- 54:22Jon: It's culty.
- 54:23Kearns: culty.
- 54:24Jon: I think culty counts.
- 54:25Ryan: yeah.
- 54:26Kearns: It's so culty.
- 54:27Jon: culty.
- 54:28Kearns: me?
- 54:28Judge Dread has such a cult following.
- 54:30Ryan: similar,
- 54:31Kearns: I'm just breaking your chops man.
- 54:33Ryan: it's similar to
- 54:34Kearns: No, I know.
- 54:34Ryan: Boone is wrongfully accused and Judge Dre is
- 54:37wrongfully accused because his
- 54:39Kearns: Accused because his
- 54:41Ryan: Judge Rico, like,
- 54:42Kearns: ex Judge
- 54:42Ryan: of
- 54:43Kearns: Rico, like, kind of franks him for murdering Max vs.
- 54:46Doubt.
- 54:46Er.
- 54:47Alert.
- 54:48Spoiler.
- 54:48Alert.
- 54:48Ryan: but.
- 54:49Jon: to say spoiler alert before you spoil it.
- 54:52Ryan: Well, it happened after they have to, it came out in 1995 pe
- 54:59Kearns: Daylight's wasting.
- 54:59What's going on?
- 55:00Ryan: so number four, it's
- 55:02Kearns: Number four?
- 55:03Ryan: October, 1993.
- 55:05Jon: Um,
- 55:06Ryan: Just Stallone.
- 55:06Oh, sorry, John.
- 55:09Jon: I was just gonna say
- 55:10Kearns: I was just gonna say number four.
- 55:11Better not be, it's gonna be cliffhanger at this rate
- 55:14Ryan: Um, well, it's Sylvester Stallone.
- 55:17Wesley Snipe.
- 55:17Sandra Bullock.
- 55:19Demolition man.
- 55:21He's, he's wrongfully accused again in this film in the
- 55:26Kearns: in this
- 55:26Ryan: he's
- 55:26Kearns: in the beginning because he's fighting Simon Phoenix.
- 55:29Yeah.
- 55:29Ryan: for killing all those civilians.
- 55:31Kearns: all civilians
- 55:32Ryan: shot
- 55:33Kearns: That's a long shot.
- 55:34Demolition Man's not culty though.
- 55:36You just threw it in there to to Just 'cause it's another Stallone movie.
- 55:40Ryan: is culty.
- 55:40Come on John.
- 55:43Kearns: Oh my gosh.
- 55:44Jon: got, it's got some cult to it.
- 55:47Kearns: You know what's good about it is that my favorite part about that movie is
- 55:50the one thing that hasn't come true yet from Demolition Man's Dystopian Future.
- 55:54No, that'll happen eventually.
- 55:56It's the, and Rat Burgers will happen too, but it's the President Schwarzenegger
- 56:01hasn't happened yet, and I guarantee you, our constitution's going to dissolve
- 56:06down to a point where that does occur,
- 56:08Ryan: Well,
- 56:08Kearns: and I'd be happy for it.
- 56:09Ryan: a good segue because number three also stars.
- 56:12Uh, Arnold Schwarzenegger, um, Maria Conta Alonso, Yaffe Koto, Richard
- 56:18Dawson, and Jesse the Body Ventura.
- 56:21It's the
- 56:22Kearns: Ventura, man, he was definitely wrongfully accused in the running man,
- 56:27Ryan: the beginning.
- 56:28He's
- 56:28Kearns: right in the beginning
- 56:29Ryan: people and he,
- 56:30Kearns: to save those people.
- 56:32They got them down.
- 56:33Ryan: one of my favorite movies growing up as a
- 56:34Kearns: My favorite movies growing up as a kid, especially, uh, Richard Dawson.
- 56:38Mm-hmm.
- 56:39Ryan: host
- 56:40Kearns: Like incredibly well cast movie and, uh, a great adaptation
- 56:44of Richard Bachman's Epic novella.
- 56:49Hmm.
- 56:49Short story novella.
- 56:51Ryan: think it's considered a novella
- 56:52Kearns: I think it's now.
- 56:52Yeah.
- 56:53But really, um, if you're not familiar with Bachman, figure it out.
- 56:56Listeners.
- 56:57It's a big riddle.
- 56:58It was solved in like 1987.
- 57:01Anyway.
- 57:02Ryan: so,
- 57:02Kearns: All right.
- 57:02Running med's.
- 57:03Another good get, man, I hate you for making me like this list.
- 57:06Ryan: well, number two,
- 57:08Kearns: Oh, number two.
- 57:09Jon: First
- 57:09Kearns: If this doesn't have Jean Claude van, you're dead to me.
- 57:13Ryan: it's actually hard target.
- 57:14No,
- 57:14Kearns: It's actually hard target.
- 57:16No, what a great choice too, though of movies.
- 57:20Ryan: Um, number two is actually a segment,
- 57:23Kearns: Number two, actually a segment.
- 57:24Ryan: from, I'll go right into it.
- 57:26Sin City.
- 57:27So I'm a big Sin
- 57:28Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 57:29Ryan: so the segment I'm talking about
- 57:31Kearns: So the segment I'm talking about is the Hard Goodbye,
- 57:34Ryan: uh,
- 57:34Kearns: to make you Rourke, uh, Rucker Howard, Elijah Wood,
- 57:38Ryan: Carla
- 57:38Kearns: Jamie King Carlos Lino.
- 57:40Ryan: it's about McGurrk who
- 57:41Kearns: Nice working
- 57:42Ryan: he's
- 57:43Kearns: and
- 57:44Ryan: up by the
- 57:45Kearns: set up by the city police,
- 57:48Ryan: killing
- 57:48Kearns: uh, for killing Goldie or actually killing Wendy.
- 57:52Ryan: And
- 57:53Kearns: Uh, a prostitute and he's kind of trying to,
- 57:55Ryan: who's setting him up, which
- 57:57Kearns: who setting him.
- 57:58Ryan: church and sister Goldie and Old Town, and it's, oh, it's so great.
- 58:05What, what happened, John?
- 58:08Jon: It's always the Catholic church.
- 58:11Kearns: Well, I mean, you're not wrong.
- 58:12The Golden Compass got all the heat for that.
- 58:14Everybody else has been saying it for years.
- 58:16They just veil it better.
- 58:17But the Golden Compass books, um, were like, or no, uh, what is it?
- 58:22Mortal Instruments books or whatever they're called, something like that.
- 58:26Were just like, no, it's the church.
- 58:29They just came right out and said it.
- 58:30That's why they got in trouble.
- 58:32Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 58:32Kearns: Um, one of my favorite authors, who I'm not gonna name out of insane
- 58:35amounts of Respect, 'cause I don't think it was done on purpose, lifted a
- 58:38line from one of the Sin City, snippets when, I don't know who the character
- 58:43in the comics is, but Clive Barker is the one, Clive Barker, uh, Clive Owens,
- 58:47the one who plays him in the movies.
- 58:50Ryan: Dwight.
- 58:52Dwight.
- 58:53Kearns: Ight.
- 58:53Uh, he has a line where he's describing Marv and he says he
- 58:57would've been right at home swinging.
- 58:59Yeah.
- 59:00He would've been right at home swinging a 50 pound mace or something
- 59:04like that into the face of an enemy.
- 59:06He just had the rotten luck of being born in the wrong century.
- 59:09The beginning half of that line is in one of the books behind me.
- 59:12It's an epic book.
- 59:14Uh, it's really good and it's used to describe a tough, a tough basically
- 59:18who's just sort of in modern day, but is like that kind of guy.
- 59:22And I was like, I don't know if that's a huge, and I know this
- 59:25writer wouldn't, wouldn't plagiarize.
- 59:27I just know it, um, based on who he is.
- 59:30So the fact that that got lifted, like that just is kind of a nod to
- 59:35the Sin City series and the writing in it, in my opinion, just felt
- 59:38like getting that off my chest.
- 59:39Ryan: so great though, you
- 59:41Kearns: So great though.
- 59:42Ryan: one of the most
- 59:42Kearns: Bring it up.
- 59:43That's like one of the most memorable scenes and not only the, the first,
- 59:46Ryan: graphic
- 59:47Kearns: he says it while Jessica Alba's on the pole
- 59:49Ryan: Nancy.
- 59:50Kearns: the movie.
- 59:51In the novel version.
- 59:52Yeah.
- 59:52Ryan: both.
- 59:53Kearns: No, I'm not talking about Nancy right now.
- 59:55I'm talking about Jessica Alba right now.
- 1:00:00That was, that was a scene that's, I think that probably made that movie $50 million.
- 1:00:05Just that promo scene.
- 1:00:07Ryan: that,
- 1:00:07Kearns: Yes.
- 1:00:08Yeah, that,
- 1:00:09Ryan: I
- 1:00:09Kearns: mean, for a fan, I was excited for a story.
- 1:00:12Ryan: Alba
- 1:00:13Kearns: Everyone else saw Jessica Alba.
- 1:00:14I was like, can I get a ticket?
- 1:00:16And one for later?
- 1:00:18They made the movies were so good.
- 1:00:19It made me want to learn the stories.
- 1:00:22And I did look into the, the graphic novels.
- 1:00:24Ryan: uh, 2005 it came out.
- 1:00:27So I actually got the original, like novel run where it has Nancy on the spine.
- 1:00:32So when you put the spines together,
- 1:00:34Kearns: So when you put spines together,
- 1:00:35Ryan: the
- 1:00:36Kearns: it's Nancy on the stripper pole.
- 1:00:39You stay on the pole.
- 1:00:40It's okay.
- 1:00:41She knows what she does.
- 1:00:42Ryan: you know, I just want to,
- 1:00:43Kearns: It's not disrespectful when, you know they do it.
- 1:00:48She's on the pole, man.
- 1:00:49Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:51Kearns: It's just, it's okay.
- 1:00:52Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:52Kearns: It's okay.
- 1:00:54Alright.
- 1:00:55You're just such a nice guy.
- 1:00:56Sometimes I gotta mess with you, but yeah.
- 1:00:58Um, that's cool man.
- 1:01:00That the spine does that.
- 1:01:01Ryan: it's, but
- 1:01:02Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:01:02Ryan: make it
- 1:01:03Kearns: it's, but they don't make it any longer.
- 1:01:05They,
- 1:01:05Ryan: for
- 1:01:06Kearns: they made it more contemporary for nowadays.
- 1:01:08Ryan: yeah, I'm, I think
- 1:01:10Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:01:10Ryan: a rare
- 1:01:11Kearns: I think it's, it's a rare commodity, but it's pretty cool.
- 1:01:14I'm looking at it right now, John.
- 1:01:16We should make it, our life's like work to take two and three and hide
- 1:01:21them somewhere far away and then like come up with this cruel jigsaw esque
- 1:01:26Ryan: messed up
- 1:01:27Kearns: of set of,
- 1:01:27Ryan: like the best stories.
- 1:01:29Kearns: that's like the best story that the
- 1:01:31Ryan: you know?
- 1:01:31Kearns: yellow pastor.
- 1:01:32Oh, you're right.
- 1:01:33Those are really good.
- 1:01:34Ryan: you
- 1:01:34Kearns: Those are two really good ones.
- 1:01:36You will once you find them, but if you fight just before you find
- 1:01:40them, you'll never see them again.
- 1:01:41Ryan: you can take to Helen back.
- 1:01:43You can take that one, you can take the last
- 1:01:46Kearns: I like to hell 'em back.
- 1:01:47Ryan: bad.
- 1:01:47It's just
- 1:01:48Kearns: I like all of 'em.
- 1:01:48It's just different.
- 1:01:49Yeah, true.
- 1:01:50Ryan: But.
- 1:01:51Kearns: But, all right, so Sin City, I gotta get us back on track here.
- 1:01:54'cause you know,
- 1:01:55Ryan: you're
- 1:01:55Kearns: so number one, love this turn.
- 1:01:58I'm sure I will.
- 1:01:59Ryan: 1994 Stars, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman.
- 1:02:04It's the Shawshank Redemption.
- 1:02:07Kearns: What are you doing?
- 1:02:07It's my favorite movie.
- 1:02:09Second favorite movie, maybe.
- 1:02:11Yeah.
- 1:02:11Ryan: accused.
- 1:02:12He didn't spoiler, he didn't kill his
- 1:02:15Kearns: Spoiler.
- 1:02:16He didn't kill his wife.
- 1:02:18Yeah, it's true.
- 1:02:20If you haven't seen Shaw Shank yet, I apologize, but yeah, it's another
- 1:02:24Stephen King work in your top five.
- 1:02:26Ryan: I did say
- 1:02:27Kearns: He was gonna kill her.
- 1:02:28He got so drunk, he pissed himself and fell asleep in his car, but he was a
- 1:02:31hundred percent gonna go shoot them.
- 1:02:33That's,
- 1:02:33Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 1:02:34Kearns: that's not true at all.
- 1:02:35But I'd like to think so.
- 1:02:36Just to argue with you,
- 1:02:37Jon: No, no spoilers.
- 1:02:38You, you, you
- 1:02:39Kearns: you had 30 years,
- 1:02:41Ryan: 1994.
- 1:02:42Kearns: see that there's a redemption at the end.
- 1:02:46Jon: you had 30 years and nightly, TNT earrings to see
- 1:02:52Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:02:52For real.
- 1:02:53Jon: if
- 1:02:53Kearns: can't think of a single hangover.
- 1:02:55I didn't get through watching Shawshank when it was just on regular cable.
- 1:02:59Ryan: Seven o'clock in the morning.
- 1:03:02Kearns: It's like just, oh God, seven o'clock in the morning.
- 1:03:06Wake up at like 10 30 just like, ugh.
- 1:03:09And drink tap water.
- 1:03:11And then you just hear Morgan Freeman prison's no fairytale place.
- 1:03:14And you're like, Hmm, back to bed
- 1:03:16Ryan: Good name Morgan Freeman.
- 1:03:20Kearns: night Morgan.
- 1:03:20Thank you.
- 1:03:22And you wake up again and he's already halfway through the, the shit tunnel.
- 1:03:25And you're like, we're gonna make it together, Andy.
- 1:03:31Anyway, back to the, back to the top five.
- 1:03:34Um, so your number one was Shawshank?
- 1:03:36Yep.
- 1:03:37Definitely wrongfully accused.
- 1:03:38That was a good list.
- 1:03:39I hate you.
- 1:03:40I hate you for making it engaging.
- 1:03:42'cause I'm the reason it went 12 minutes long.
- 1:03:44All right, John,
- 1:03:45Ryan: that folks?
- 1:03:46Jon: Okay,
- 1:03:46Kearns: you heard that?
- 1:03:49Jon: I did it a
- 1:03:50Kearns: And it hurts.
- 1:03:50Jon: this time also.
- 1:03:53Um, so my top five is more people than movies.
- 1:03:57I.
- 1:03:58Kearns: Okay.
- 1:03:59Jon: But my top five in
- 1:04:00Kearns: top five in honor of David Reed is directors acting in our movies.
- 1:04:07Oh, cool.
- 1:04:08This will be fun.
- 1:04:09Jon: one.
- 1:04:09Kearns: Part one.
- 1:04:11Jon: so, this
- 1:04:12Kearns: So this list could be,
- 1:04:13Jon: And
- 1:04:14Kearns: and I also had, I'm gonna throw in on this,
- 1:04:17Jon: in
- 1:04:18Kearns: not in their own,
- 1:04:19Jon: so no,
- 1:04:20Kearns: so no, like self,
- 1:04:21Jon: Hitchcock,
- 1:04:22Kearns: Hitchcock,
- 1:04:23Jon: in somebody
- 1:04:24Kearns: somebody else,
- 1:04:27Jon: So my number five is Jeremy
- 1:04:29Kearns: Jeremy Gar
- 1:04:30Jon: who directed the
- 1:04:32Kearns: the battery And after midnight, mm-hmm.
- 1:04:35After
- 1:04:35Jon: to add to our, our list.
- 1:04:38But the
- 1:04:38Kearns: midnight's coming up
- 1:04:40Jon: guys
- 1:04:40Kearns: guys.
- 1:04:41Jon: excited for.
- 1:04:43And Jeremy
- 1:04:44Kearns: And Jeremy Gardner
- 1:04:45Jon: has,
- 1:04:45Kearns: has, you know, pretty,
- 1:04:47Jon: a
- 1:04:47Kearns: probably a longer
- 1:04:49Jon: resume.
- 1:04:49He was
- 1:04:49Kearns: resume.
- 1:04:50He was in Christmas.
- 1:04:51Bloody,
- 1:04:51Jon: was in
- 1:04:52Kearns: he was in,
- 1:04:53Jon: He was in
- 1:04:54Kearns: in.
- 1:04:55Jon: He's been in a bunch of really, really top notch horror.
- 1:04:59Kearns: I don't know.
- 1:05:00He was in spring.
- 1:05:01Jon: Yep.
- 1:05:02Kearns: That's the one that I'm thinking of.
- 1:05:03Spring.
- 1:05:04Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:05Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:05Jon: the, yep.
- 1:05:06Kearns: Ah, sorry.
- 1:05:08I'm old.
- 1:05:09Jon: lot, he's been in their stuff and he's been in a lot
- 1:05:12of Joe Bagels smoothies and
- 1:05:14Kearns: That sounds like a dude
- 1:05:15Jon: is
- 1:05:16Kearns: who's lives in a Winnebagos, if you know what I mean.
- 1:05:19It's like a dude, you know.
- 1:05:19Let your kid in near.
- 1:05:21Jon: dude, we have to start adding his movie, his movies onto this list too.
- 1:05:24'cause
- 1:05:24Kearns: Well, the good part about this is we don't plan to stop, so we got time.
- 1:05:28We're gonna pop him in, baby.
- 1:05:31Cool.
- 1:05:32Jon: so my number
- 1:05:33Kearns: So my number four.
- 1:05:34Jon: of spring, is Justin Benson,
- 1:05:37Kearns: Okay, cool.
- 1:05:38What was he?
- 1:05:39Jon: he, he did, you know, spring and all the, and all the ones we've
- 1:05:43talked about with Morehead, but he acted in after midnight, the Jeremy
- 1:05:48Kearns: okay.
- 1:05:49Jon: So they, he
- 1:05:49Kearns: Okay.
- 1:05:50Jon: of home and home there.
- 1:05:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:53Little bit of, little bit of synchronicity.
- 1:05:55Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:58So my number three is gonna
- 1:06:00Kearns: Is gonna be David
- 1:06:01Ryan: Yes.
- 1:06:03For night
- 1:06:04Jon: So we know he scanners the fly,
- 1:06:06Kearns: Fly, obviously for night, but also for his role in Jason X. Oh, wow.
- 1:06:12What does he do in Jason X
- 1:06:15Jon: I don't even remember.
- 1:06:16He's just in it and being David Kronenberg.
- 1:06:18Ryan: I think he's
- 1:06:19Kearns: Kronenberg all over the place.
- 1:06:21Ryan: he gets killed in the beginning.
- 1:06:22He like leads Jason to the The chiro for
- 1:06:25Jon: Yeah, he's, he's definitely like up to nefarious crap and dies.
- 1:06:32Kearns: Cool.
- 1:06:33I mean, who doesn't wanna do that
- 1:06:36Jon: Um, my number two, my next, the one and two are pretty mainstream.
- 1:06:41Um, number two is Quentin Tarantino
- 1:06:45Ryan: I am shocked he
- 1:06:46Jon: and I'll I.
- 1:06:48Kearns: on, lemme think.
- 1:06:48Lemme think of what movie he didn't direct that he was in.
- 1:06:53I mean, I bet you Ryan knows right off the top of his head.
- 1:06:58Jon: Dear
- 1:06:59Kearns: who's talking to
- 1:07:01Jon: Yes.
- 1:07:02Kearns: God?
- 1:07:03I knew it.
- 1:07:04Ryan: he would accept four rooms.
- 1:07:05Kearns: the fifth sperm
- 1:07:07Jon: Nope,
- 1:07:08Kearns: What's that?
- 1:07:09Ryan: Uh,
- 1:07:09Jon: not four rooms.
- 1:07:11Oh,
- 1:07:12Kearns: No four.
- 1:07:13Jon: from dus
- 1:07:13Kearns: I got nothing.
- 1:07:14Ryan: Oh, that is true.
- 1:07:15Kearns: it's right.
- 1:07:16He didn't direct that.
- 1:07:17God damnit
- 1:07:17Ryan: it.
- 1:07:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:18Kearns: He did write it.
- 1:07:20He directed it though.
- 1:07:21No, he didn't.
- 1:07:22Did he direct it?
- 1:07:23He didn't.
- 1:07:23No, no.
- 1:07:24He wrote it.
- 1:07:24Wrote he wrote it.
- 1:07:25He didn't direct it.
- 1:07:26Got it.
- 1:07:27Yeah.
- 1:07:27So he's, he made somehow managed to finagle sell my
- 1:07:31hayek's foot into his own mouth.
- 1:07:32I know he had some power over that movie,
- 1:07:34Ryan: a
- 1:07:34Jon: of course.
- 1:07:34Kearns: all right.
- 1:07:35Ryan: He wrote the film.
- 1:07:36Of
- 1:07:36Kearns: It's like I, I'll make the, I'll make the, I'll make the movie
- 1:07:39with you, but I have to be this one specific actor and I I know who's gonna
- 1:07:43be the stripper lady with the snake.
- 1:07:46Jon: I am,
- 1:07:47Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:07:47Jon: character I play, it doesn't matter.
- 1:07:50Kearns: Are what size Converse are those, are those size sixes?
- 1:07:52It's not important.
- 1:07:53Jon: foot in my mouth.
- 1:07:54It doesn't matter.
- 1:07:55Kearns: Yeah, it's for real.
- 1:07:56That's probably like one of his dis the addendum in his deal with the
- 1:08:00devil for becoming the director.
- 1:08:02He is.
- 1:08:03He was like, you know what?
- 1:08:04I'm putting a footnote on here.
- 1:08:05I don't, I'm gonna make sure he doesn't see it.
- 1:08:06He was like, puts it there.
- 1:08:07Satan didn't see it.
- 1:08:08Signed it All right.
- 1:08:09One soul.
- 1:08:11Yes.
- 1:08:12Jon: Perfect.
- 1:08:12There.
- 1:08:14Kearns: So any, but for anybody who hasn't seen the movie, Quentin
- 1:08:17Tarantino plays the guy and, uh, Salma Hayak puts her foot in his mouth
- 1:08:21and pours champagne down her leg.
- 1:08:23And she's probably the hottest she's ever been and ever will be in that movie.
- 1:08:26I mean, she's always been a beautiful woman and she always will be,
- 1:08:31probably presumably, but, um, she, she's just absolutely every human
- 1:08:38on earth watched that movie and was like, Ugh, when she came out.
- 1:08:41So Tarantino
- 1:08:43Jon: Yep.
- 1:08:44Kearns: did something
- 1:08:45Jon: Yep.
- 1:08:46Ryan: Makes,
- 1:08:46Kearns: that moment.
- 1:08:47Ryan: me want to go to that club.
- 1:08:49Kearns: I wanna go to that club just 'cause it's such a cool movie.
- 1:08:52Ryan: you know the
- 1:08:53Jon: mm-hmm.
- 1:08:53Kearns: You know the name of that club?
- 1:08:56The Copa Cabana, the Twist.
- 1:08:59Even better, it looks like it would be called the Titty Twister.
- 1:09:03It's like a roadhouse, but um,
- 1:09:05Ryan: the Mexican desert
- 1:09:06Kearns: yeah, Mexican desert.
- 1:09:08Ryan: the bounce there.
- 1:09:09Kearns: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:09Ryan: teach Marin as your, as your bartender or Bud Tenderer, depending.
- 1:09:16Kearns: depending, right
- 1:09:17Jon: There's,
- 1:09:17Kearns: there
- 1:09:18Jon: so many cool like cult actors thrown in there.
- 1:09:21Kearns: in there.
- 1:09:22Ryan: Harvey
- 1:09:22Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:23Ryan: Uh, Juliette Lewis.
- 1:09:24A
- 1:09:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:25Ryan: Lewis.
- 1:09:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:30You
- 1:09:30Kearns: It's a good film.
- 1:09:31Jon: in there.
- 1:09:34Ryan: George Clooney.
- 1:09:36Kearns: We didn't, I didn't even really know how much of a, like, it
- 1:09:40was difficult to differentiate at that time what was an Epic movie and
- 1:09:44what was just a horror movie for me.
- 1:09:46'cause I was young, I was pretty young and like that one didn't
- 1:09:49even feel epic at the time.
- 1:09:51I was like, oh, it's Clooney, I get it.
- 1:09:53There's this other guy who was kind of weird and licks feet and there's
- 1:09:56a super hot lady with a snake and now there's Billy Buyers everywhere.
- 1:09:59Oh God.
- 1:10:00I didn't see this coming at all.
- 1:10:01And that's kind of where, but I didn't know who Danny Trejo was
- 1:10:03or Cheech or any of that stuff.
- 1:10:06No.
- 1:10:07Any of that.
- 1:10:08So it was, it was just like a cool movie.
- 1:10:11And then later on in life, Tarantino exploded.
- 1:10:14I sort of looked back on it.
- 1:10:15But any who,
- 1:10:18Jon: So before
- 1:10:19Kearns: so before number one, I'm gonna throw a quick,
- 1:10:21honorable mention in because
- 1:10:23Jon: I wanted him
- 1:10:24Kearns: I wanted him to be number one.
- 1:10:25I wanted George Romero to be number one,
- 1:10:27Jon: But
- 1:10:28Kearns: but
- 1:10:28Jon: roles
- 1:10:29Kearns: roles in
- 1:10:29Jon: movies are
- 1:10:30Kearns: movies are just
- 1:10:31Jon: short.
- 1:10:32Kearns: short.
- 1:10:33Yeah.
- 1:10:34Jon: 'cause I mean,
- 1:10:35Kearns: I mean,
- 1:10:36Jon: his role in Silence of the Lambs,
- 1:10:38Kearns: land.
- 1:10:39Jon: or, I mean, you
- 1:10:42Kearns: I didn't even know he was in it,
- 1:10:43Jon: see the back of his
- 1:10:44Kearns: the back of his head.
- 1:10:44Jon: in one
- 1:10:45Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 1:10:47Jon: Hannibal Lector scenes.
- 1:10:49So I, I couldn't put
- 1:10:51Kearns: I couldn't put him at numbers.
- 1:10:52I couldn't put him on here.
- 1:10:53It's not long enough.
- 1:10:54Jon: one
- 1:10:54Kearns: So my number one is West Craven.
- 1:10:56Oh, okay.
- 1:10:58Jon: uh,
- 1:10:58Kearns: tracks
- 1:10:59Jon: in a movie called The
- 1:11:00Kearns: a movie called The Fear.
- 1:11:01Jon: and has a
- 1:11:02Kearns: Oh,
- 1:11:02Jon: and Diary of the
- 1:11:03Kearns: di of the Death.
- 1:11:05Okay.
- 1:11:07Jon: So I got Romero
- 1:11:07Kearns: I got Romero in there.
- 1:11:09Ryan: I was gonna
- 1:11:09Kearns: Romero showed up.
- 1:11:11Ryan: Romero from Call of
- 1:11:12Kearns: said Romero from Call of Duty,
- 1:11:14Ryan: Zombies.
- 1:11:15I think either the first one or the
- 1:11:17Jon: Yeah.
- 1:11:17Kearns: first one.
- 1:11:18We can do video game cameos at one point.
- 1:11:20I'm sure there's a million of those.
- 1:11:21Keanu, who's probably got six just random video games.
- 1:11:26Yeah.
- 1:11:27Jon: from Night Breed.
- 1:11:29Voices in Red Dead redemption
- 1:11:31Kearns: redemption too.
- 1:11:32Oh, cool.
- 1:11:34What else you got there on your little note sheet?
- 1:11:35I bet you there's a million fun facts.
- 1:11:37We should publish those.
- 1:11:39Jon: we should.
- 1:11:40Kearns: We should publish those.
- 1:11:41Hey, uh, like, and subscribe, uh, send money to me specifically.
- 1:11:46I'll split it with them, I promise.
- 1:11:47And, um, I have a GoFundMe.
- 1:11:51I think they have a Patreon.
- 1:11:52I don't know.
- 1:11:52Just send us money.
- 1:11:53We're hungry.
- 1:11:53And yeah, let us know if you want the notes, because that'd be kind of cool.
- 1:11:57And also it'd be a good time to plug, uh, the letterbox that John's
- 1:12:02put together, which is, um, I.
- 1:12:04Jon: find us there.
- 1:12:05It's, uh, xenomania 50.
- 1:12:08Kearns: And that's where John will list out all the movies we talk about and
- 1:12:11reference in all these episodes, even if we only kind of, you know, ramble
- 1:12:15through them a little bit here and there, which is totally my fault, but whatever.
- 1:12:20You guys aren't perfect either.
- 1:12:21Jon: Yeah, find us on Instagram.
- 1:12:23Find us everywhere.
- 1:12:24Come
- 1:12:25Kearns: Yeah, we're on Instagram.
- 1:12:26It's true.
- 1:12:26It xenomania 50.
- 1:12:29Yep.
- 1:12:29Well, hopefully you're watching this on YouTube.
- 1:12:31If not, you're part of the problem and Yeah.
- 1:12:35Ryan: the
- 1:12:35Kearns: And anywhere podcast or sold,
- 1:12:37Jon: you get your podcasts.
- 1:12:39Kearns: but yeah, we'll find a place to publish these notes.
- 1:12:41Um, thinking letterbox would be probably the best place to be honest.
- 1:12:45But these might be a Patreon thing.
- 1:12:47It might end up being a Patreon thing, my fin,
- 1:12:50Jon: I
- 1:12:50Kearns: but yeah, that's, yeah.
- 1:12:51Tell you I,
- 1:12:52Jon: do
- 1:12:52Kearns: I, I do two versions of them.
- 1:12:54Jon: I
- 1:12:54Kearns: Oh.
- 1:12:55I do one with like information,
- 1:12:57Jon: just to throw some facts
- 1:12:58Kearns: some facts in, and I do
- 1:13:00Jon: I'm
- 1:13:00Kearns: one them
- 1:13:01Jon: and
- 1:13:01Kearns: watching
- 1:13:02Jon: the one as
- 1:13:02Kearns: and the one that I'm watching is
- 1:13:04Jon: of
- 1:13:04Kearns: kind of.
- 1:13:05Jon: So,
- 1:13:08Kearns: Third,
- 1:13:09Ryan: Yes.
- 1:13:13Kearns: I wanna see the unhinged version.
- 1:13:14You know, that's another tear on the Patreon.
- 1:13:16Here's the notes and here's John's unfiltered notes, which
- 1:13:21I didn't know I would be scared of until you mentioned them.
- 1:13:24Um,
- 1:13:25Ryan: Where did he get this?
- 1:13:26Kearns: amazing.
- 1:13:28Amazing.
- 1:13:29But yeah, guys, that was Xenomania episode 16.
- 1:13:32I can't believe we, we've done 16 of these already.
- 1:13:34Boys 16 on Night Breed.
- 1:13:37It's still one of my favorites.
- 1:13:38It's, it's not on the same tier as a monster movie as Pumpkin
- 1:13:43Head, but John's wearing the hat.
- 1:13:44So I feel like I have to mention that this was sort of in the same timeframe
- 1:13:48when I watched Pumpkin Head and it, it lives in that realm of my heart.
- 1:13:52It's sort of, it's an, it's just, you gotta see it.
- 1:13:55It's got a feel to it, a vibe, all its own, and it really is worth watching.
- 1:13:59Um, so go out, spend money on it.
- 1:14:02Buy it for a dollar 99.
- 1:14:034 99 on Amazon.
- 1:14:05Watch it a hundred times if you want to, or wherever actually
- 1:14:09by the actual Yeah, disc.
- 1:14:12Jon: disc.
- 1:14:13Kearns: I have
- 1:14:14Jon: an, IM an Arrow
- 1:14:15Kearns: an arrow import.
- 1:14:17Jon: like if you have the, the region free Blu-ray player,
- 1:14:20that's a good way to go too.
- 1:14:21Kearns: To go too.
- 1:14:22You know what we'll do too, because fuck Jeff Bezos.
- 1:14:24We'll find a way, um, for you guys to patronize some, somebody who
- 1:14:29could actually use the business
- 1:14:31Jon: Uh, I'll
- 1:14:31Kearns: you want to buy these
- 1:14:32Jon: the bat.
- 1:14:33Two
- 1:14:33Kearns: boom,
- 1:14:34Jon: bat that are good.
- 1:14:35Orbit.
- 1:14:35DVD and Diabolic.
- 1:14:37DVD.
- 1:14:38Kearns: diabolic and orbit, not the gum.
- 1:14:40Those are assholes too.
- 1:14:42We're talking about orbit, the DVD people.
- 1:14:45Okay?
- 1:14:46Jon: definitely.
- 1:14:47Kearns: Yeah, definitely.
- 1:14:47Jon: mean, it's not
- 1:14:49Kearns: it's not Amazon shipping, but it's pretty
- 1:14:52Jon: You,
- 1:14:52Kearns: I mean, who needs two day shipping?
- 1:14:54We're, I mean, we have to get used to the fact that we don't need two day
- 1:14:57shipping for toothbrushes from Taiwan.
- 1:14:59We really don't.
- 1:15:01These are, and so, yeah, orbit, which by the way, their gums fantastic.
- 1:15:05Um, orbit will be our sponsor on our next episode.
- 1:15:08We love you Orbit and diabolic.
- 1:15:11Those are two great places.
- 1:15:13Diabolic with a K, because why not?
- 1:15:15Jon: Yep.
- 1:15:16Kearns: those are two great places to get it.
- 1:15:17I wouldn't call them indie, but they're definitely more in our sphere.
- 1:15:21Let's give them some money.
- 1:15:23Jon: Definitely.
- 1:15:24Ryan: some love.
- 1:15:25Kearns: all right guys, that's it for our episode.
- 1:15:27Thank you guys.
- 1:15:27You did such an amazing job of dragging me out of my catacombs.
- 1:15:31I've been dying for the last two days, everybody.
- 1:15:33So we're recording this late and, uh, thanks
- 1:15:36Ryan: See you guys later.
- 1:15:38Kearns: guys.
- 1:15:38Later.
- 1:15:39Jon: you guys.
