- 0:14SPEAKER_08: All right, we're back live in the West Loop of Chicago, the T Chanley studios.
- 0:20SPEAKER_08: We got a banger of an episode this week.
- 0:22SPEAKER_08: Holy cow.
- 0:23SPEAKER_08: Bunch of Southsiders hanging out in the West Side, talking Chicago, talking the country, talking St.
- 0:30SPEAKER_08: Patrick's Day coming up.
- 0:31SPEAKER_08: We got a lot to dive into.
- 0:33SPEAKER_08: Joining me is uh always as much as possible.
- 0:37SPEAKER_08: Dwayne Kennedy.
- 0:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 0:38SPEAKER_08: Hey, Bob.
- 0:39SPEAKER_08: What's going on, man?
- 0:40SPEAKER_08: Good to see you.
- 0:41SPEAKER_08: Everything, nothing.
- 0:42SPEAKER_08: We got to bring in uh, you know, we're just a couple citizens, as you were saying.
- 0:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_08: A couple citizens here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_08: We're joined by, is it the honorable?
- 0:48SPEAKER_08: Did we say honorable?
- 0:49SPEAKER_08: No.
- 0:50SPEAKER_08: Alderman?
- 0:51SPEAKER_08: Alderman Matt O'Shea, leader of the 19th ward, city council member.
- 0:58SPEAKER_08: How do you even have time to come in here, dude?
- 1:00SPEAKER_08: I appreciate it, man.
- 1:01SPEAKER_06: Uh, you called and he's always by the phone in case of emergency.
- 1:08SPEAKER_08: I love the the short like we were talking about politicians having uh coached responses, or you know, you got kind of like um stuff that you have in the can ready to come out.
- 1:18SPEAKER_08: What are the what's the gather yourself as I answer this?
- 1:23SPEAKER_05: I'm unlike most people, I tend to just go right into it and oftentimes probably say more than I should, probably more blunt than I should.
- 1:31SPEAKER_05: Um people like to refer to that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_05: I get my Irish up.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: Um, but most elected officials, most politicians, will start off with a good 15-20 seconds patronizing you about what a great question it is, and then spend two minutes not answering the question, but prattling on about whatever talking points they were instructed to stick to.
- 1:54SPEAKER_08: Well, you answered it and you didn't answer it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_08: That was that was really well done.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:58SPEAKER_08: Because it is always that, right?
- 2:00SPEAKER_08: Like that's a great question.
- 2:01SPEAKER_08: And uh I want to thank you for that question.
- 2:04SPEAKER_08: That brings up a lot of other things too.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07SPEAKER_08: And then take it another But anyway, it's great to have you here, Matt.
- 2:11SPEAKER_08: Uh and yeah, I know you're a very busy dude.
- 2:13SPEAKER_08: Um how often are are you out of the ward?
- 2:15SPEAKER_08: You got to come down to City Hall often?
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: I would say certainly the last couple years, uh uh significantly more time is spent at City Hall as opposed to the neighborhood.
- 2:26SPEAKER_05: I would much rather be in the community where you can, you know, see things first hand.
- 2:33SPEAKER_05: Um it's always good to be around the neighborhood more.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, these last few years we we we spent there's a lot going on, huh?
- 2:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:42SPEAKER_08: That means that there's uh there's more to discuss, less um what would you say?
- 2:48SPEAKER_08: Uh what's the word I'm looking for?
- 2:50SPEAKER_08: Drama.
- 2:50SPEAKER_08: Less consensus?
- 2:51SPEAKER_08: Less consensus where everyone's like on the same page, kinda?
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, in fact I'd I'd go a step further.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: There's a utter lack of decorum.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: Uh what we've kind of morphed into, certainly.
- 3:03SPEAKER_06: Um over what period of time, you think?
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: Uh post-pandemic.
- 3:09SPEAKER_05: Um certainly the last several years in the city council.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: You see it in the Chicago City Council, but you you see it across the country.
- 3:16SPEAKER_06: Are people just less civil with one another?
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, there was just a uh TV commercial uh about F Trump.
- 3:26SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 3:27SPEAKER_05: Like saying the word.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, for real?
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: Leaping it out, like and and I get it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: We have a real problem in this country right now.
- 3:37SPEAKER_05: Um the far right is too far right, the far left is too far left, nobody's willing to work together, nobody's willing to find compromise, middle ground.
- 3:46SPEAKER_05: But when people who hold office are on television saying F this or F that, that's what our children see.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: That's an utter lack of decorum.
- 3:58SPEAKER_05: Um and I get it.
- 3:59SPEAKER_05: I I I'm frustrated with what's going on uh in the nation's capital leadership.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: But when when you lower yourself to that, what are we doing for this next generation with that kind of talk?
- 4:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they need to get some uh some nuns in there.
- 4:16SPEAKER_08: We've got to get some Catholic leadership in there.
- 4:19SPEAKER_08: What do you think of our decorum?
- 4:20SPEAKER_08: What do you think of the Walter Payton picture and the and the plants that we have here for you?
- 4:25SPEAKER_08: Uh we're trying to make lighten the mood.
- 4:27SPEAKER_05: It's very, very heavy in here.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: Love love the picture of Walter, the the the greatest football player to ever play the game.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: And uh we've got our uh White Sox World Series 2005.
- 4:39SPEAKER_08: I like it.
- 4:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we're we're trying to get there.
- 4:41SPEAKER_08: We're trying to get there.
- 4:42SPEAKER_08: David Rose.
- 4:43SPEAKER_08: The um the just to bring people in about our legislative branch, would you say, of our city?
- 4:51SPEAKER_08: Most cities have a city council, right?
- 4:53SPEAKER_08: Yes, not every city has aldermen.
- 4:55SPEAKER_08: We have 50 aldermen, you're one of them, which is incredible.
- 4:58SPEAKER_08: How long have you been, Alderman?
- 4:59SPEAKER_08: 15 years.
- 5:00SPEAKER_08: 15 years.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: Every four years?
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 5:03SPEAKER_08: When you are working underneath these politicians as a young guy, like you're seeing stuff, anything you were surprised to see or learn, or you're like, oh, this is how it works.
- 5:13SPEAKER_08: Because you're kind of like you, you're you're running around for these people, right?
- 5:18SPEAKER_08: We had a spider reference last week in the episode.
- 5:20SPEAKER_08: I don't think it was uh appreciated, but you're kind of that that you had some spider jobs kind of learning uh yeah, I was uh I was always like behind the scenes, you know, the guy that tried to get stuff done in the neighborhood.
- 5:34SPEAKER_05: The bagman?
- 5:34SPEAKER_05: Uh not the bagman, but like the guy that would actually go out and get the cat out of the tree, or the you know, guy that would get into the house to assess like did the person need some mental health support, or or you know, do we need to get uh law enforcement involved?
- 5:49SPEAKER_08: This is really well, I've seen you in this situation.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: You get into like you roll up your sleeves, the basements are getting water, you're on the block, you're going in people's houses, you have to really get that close to your constituents.
- 6:04SPEAKER_08: Like that's kind of crazy, right?
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: Um if you're gonna do the job right, yeah.
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: It's uh you know, it's uh it's not glorious, it's not TV.
- 6:14SPEAKER_05: If you're gonna do the job right, you gotta be out there, you gotta show people that you actually care and you wanna you wanna improve situations, you wanna you wanna find solutions.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: Um and sometimes that's yeah, getting your you do all of that?
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: Can you counsel?
- 6:29SPEAKER_08: Can you talk to my all the So yeah, there are people that have been at it for for a while.
- 6:36SPEAKER_08: Um when you are dealing with other aldermen, like there's gotta be like you got like a team of people that you always kind of caucus with or trust.
- 6:48SPEAKER_08: I mean, how how where's the trust level among the 50 aldermen right now?
- 6:53SPEAKER_05: Uh there's a lot of um mistrust.
- 6:57SPEAKER_05: Um there's there's a lot of uh frustration.
- 7:00SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, I I would describe myself as a moderate, uh as a centrist.
- 7:06SPEAKER_08: Um we'll we'll figure that out by the end of this episode.
- 7:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 7:09SPEAKER_08: Um we'll be the judge of that.
- 7:12SPEAKER_05: You know, I I I'm always willing to work with anybody who wants to find middle ground.
- 7:16SPEAKER_05: You know, too often in in politics, you know, everything's a negotiation, everything's a compromise.
- 7:23SPEAKER_05: We're gonna sit down.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: You should walk away unhappy about something you didn't get out of the deal, and I should walk away unhappy about something, but no one should ever expect to walk away like I got everything I wanted.
- 7:34SPEAKER_06: Right, right.
- 7:35SPEAKER_06: Um because that means it's gonna be at somebody else's expense.
- 7:38SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: Typically the taxpayer's expense.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: Um, so uh there's several aldermen, you know, most recently during this uh budget season that we work closely with, and um, you know, I'm always my door's always open to try to find middle ground.
- 7:56SPEAKER_08: The Pat McGann show is presented to you by Tiege Hanley, Uncomplicated Skin Care for Men.
- 8:02SPEAKER_08: You're seriously washing your face with a three-in-one body wash?

- 8:42SPEAKER_08: That's Tiege.com slash Pat.
- 8:45SPEAKER_08: Tiege Hanley, it's the way we face the day.
- 8:50SPEAKER_08: Well, you have an engaged ward, very much uh politically charged.
- 8:55SPEAKER_08: The 19th Ward, if you can just kind of bring people in on that, um, how would you describe the 19th ward and the um I wouldn't say like well, maybe like juice or power, political there's some clout in the 19th Ward.
- 9:09SPEAKER_08: And historically it goes back.
- 9:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, it's funny.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: I was I have a picture in my office of the last four people that have served as aldermen were all still alive and we all still communicate, uh, and it goes back more than 50 years.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Whereas some wards in 50 years have had 12 or 14 aldermen.
- 9:28SPEAKER_05: We've had four, and uh we all still work together.
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: I I still call uh those guys for for advice uh frequently.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 9:39SPEAKER_05: Um you know, I always joke that in our community, you know, again, a very educated community, uh a very integrated community.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: We've been integrated going back to the 1950s.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: Um not a perfect uh neighborhood.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: We have our uh issues, but more often than not, if I'm standing on someone's front porch, there's a good chance the man of the wound I'm talking to is a hell of a lot smarter than me and a lot more knowledgeable on the topic.
- 10:11SPEAKER_05: So I can't just BS my way through.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: Like that that that doesn't happen in the 19th Ward, as you pointed out.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: They're engaged and they're educated and they hold you accountable.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: Everything from basic city services to uh what I jokingly call fix my life problems.
- 10:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
- 10:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, you gotta deal with.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: I mean, I feel like I help out with my kids' teams, coaching, grammar school basketball.
- 10:40SPEAKER_08: Now I don't run into issues with parents, but I hear things occasionally, and sometimes it's more like the school stuff, but you're dealing with these people on another level.
- 10:50SPEAKER_08: Like in a way, you gotta deal with a lot of parents, a lot of Karen's, as may maybe people will say, What are like the number one like roll your eye phone calls?
- 11:01SPEAKER_08: Like, oh come on.
- 11:02SPEAKER_05: I like oh there's I can't even you know, we're we're under a flight path into Midway.
- 11:09SPEAKER_06: Uh oh boy, I I know where this is going.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: Now, the 19th ward and and that flight path, there's like 87th and Western, 95th and Ashland coming in from um you know the southwest, but it does fly over a part of the neighborhood, and I'll have people call up to say, you know, you've got to change that flight pattern.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: Like this this plane that went over my house this morning, it it was like 200 feet above my house.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: Um an alderman in the city of Chicago has no control over um the FAA flight plans into the international airport several miles from the neighborhood.
- 11:49SPEAKER_05: But uh that was a call I got recently.
- 11:52SPEAKER_06: Okay, so a call like that, do you tell those people what you just told us, or do you say, I'll get right on that.
- 11:59SPEAKER_06: I'll see what I can do.
- 12:01SPEAKER_06: Or do you humor them or do you just just what do you do?
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: Um I'll be honest with them.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: I'll say I I have no control over that.
- 12:10SPEAKER_05: If if you want to send me a letter, I can forward it to the commissioner, the Department of Aviation, but I'll be very honest with you, sir.
- 12:17SPEAKER_08: Oh, and they're like, Oh man, I gotta write a letter.
- 12:21SPEAKER_08: It's like the old uh trying to quit back.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: From somebody from the international airport several miles from the neighborhood.
- 12:32SPEAKER_05: But um uh it's I have been known to have a little fun with people who call up, and you know, it's just a uh a a ridiculous um sometimes alcohol-infused phone call from someone.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Uh in the 19th ward.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:50SPEAKER_08: Well, you mentioned airports.
- 12:52SPEAKER_08: You're on the uh aviation committee.
- 12:55SPEAKER_05: What's the name of the I serve as chairman as the of the Committee on Aviation, um, being that we do have two international airports, O'Hare, uh the busiest airport, and Midway, uh obviously also very busy.
- 13:09SPEAKER_08: So uh So you've learned a lot about airports and how they run, because there's a huge thing going on at O'Hare right now, and I would love to hear about it, dude, because I fly out of I got I'm rocking my United shirt right now.
- 13:20SPEAKER_08: I'm at I'm at O'Hare often.
- 13:23SPEAKER_08: What is going on with this project?
- 13:25SPEAKER_05: Well, we have multiple projects uh at O'Hare.
- 13:28SPEAKER_05: You know, it's interesting.
- 13:29SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know, you ever fly out of LaGuardia?
- 13:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:32SPEAKER_05: All the time.
- 13:32SPEAKER_05: Okay, so you see how beautiful LaGuardia is?
- 13:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I call it JFK Jr.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: now.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: So, you know, when you're talking about an airplane crash, JFK Jr.
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: Oh man, that's a good point.
- 13:43SPEAKER_06: I'll have to call it something else.
- 13:46SPEAKER_08: Remember the old LaGuardia?
- 13:47SPEAKER_08: The old like hallway?
- 13:48SPEAKER_08: It looked like the Greyhound bus day.
- 13:50SPEAKER_08: Well, it looked like Midway, looked 25 years ago.
- 13:53SPEAKER_08: Reminding me.
- 13:54SPEAKER_08: I kind of miss it in a way.
- 13:55SPEAKER_06: I do too, man.
- 13:57SPEAKER_06: You can step right off the plane onto the street.
- 13:59SPEAKER_08: LaGuardia is nice, the new LaGuardia, but it is a lot of walking.
- 14:03SPEAKER_08: Like it is far when you to get but it is beautiful.
- 14:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:07SPEAKER_08: So you got is it the same uh contractors?
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: So, you know, O'Hare Airport is an enormous campus.
- 14:14SPEAKER_05: It's, you know, a city in and of itself.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: There's more than 50,000 employees at O'Hare Airport.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: Um, it's the busiest airport in the United States.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: It's one of the busiest airports in the world.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: I know it had the time.
- 14:28SPEAKER_05: We just got it back.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Based on connectivity.
- 14:31SPEAKER_08: And and one of those 50,000 people has a pair of my AirPods that I left on a plane.
- 14:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 14:37SPEAKER_08: And then I tracked it, and they live on like Balmoral.
- 14:40SPEAKER_08: Oh, they live like right by the airport anyway.
- 14:42SPEAKER_08: Matt, can you take care of it?
- 14:43SPEAKER_05: Let's let's go over there after that.
- 14:45SPEAKER_05: Do I have to write a letter for that?
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: What are you doing over here, Alderman?
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: You're not this is not your ward.
- 14:50SPEAKER_06: Don't worry about whose ward it is.
- 14:53SPEAKER_05: You know, but when you're talking about an airport, you've got to remain competitive.
- 14:56SPEAKER_05: You need to modernize, you need to uh make improvements, um, both to get planes in and out, uh, but also make it a good experience for business travel, passenger travel, families in and out.
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: Um, here's our biggest economic engine.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: And so you've got to stay competitive.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: And how do you stay competitive?
- 15:18SPEAKER_05: By modernizing and and investing in replacing old infrastructure, uh, making it a better experience.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: LaGuardia's successfully done it.
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: Several other large airports have.
- 15:29SPEAKER_05: We're in the middle of that here.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: Um, this is huge for us in that it's modernizing the airport.
- 15:35SPEAKER_05: Ultimately, we'll open up uh Western access to O'Hare, but um it will only add to You maybe get there from Western?
- 15:45SPEAKER_05: Um I was thinking that too.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: What's that even mean?
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: That sounds good.
- 15:52SPEAKER_05: But it's it's what you have to do to stay competitive, and if you don't, you'll fall behind.
- 15:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:57SPEAKER_08: Are you gonna help get a top notch at O'Hare?
- 16:00SPEAKER_08: We need to like get some south side of that up a little bit.
- 16:03SPEAKER_06: Because top notch.
- 16:05SPEAKER_06: Me and Pat go to top notch after every taping.
- 16:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, just about every episode.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we go to the best burger.
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: I don't care what anybody says, it's it's the best burger anywhere, not just Chicago, anywhere.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: You don't have to convince us.
- 16:19SPEAKER_08: I am I am on board with that.
- 16:20SPEAKER_05: I used to argue with Mayor Emmanuel about that.
- 16:22SPEAKER_05: Really?
- 16:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 16:23SPEAKER_05: What was what was he in there?
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: He had some place up north he was always bragging about which one uh Moody's?
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: Kuma's?
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: Kumas?
- 16:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:30SPEAKER_08: Kuma's corner.
- 16:31SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and we lost two, Mayor.
- 16:33SPEAKER_08: I've never even heard of that.
- 16:34SPEAKER_08: I'm sure it's a great burger, but top notch is it's heavy metal, uh meets, it's like biker bars, vibe.
- 16:40SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, okay.
- 16:41SPEAKER_08: And they make huge burgers, they all have a theme, but it's nothing like top notch.
- 16:46SPEAKER_08: Top notch is like an everyday place.
- 16:47SPEAKER_08: Kumas, you go to you can go there like once a quarter.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: That sounds like yeah, like an animal I wouldn't want to encounter.
- 16:55SPEAKER_08: So, what are the major right now?
- 16:57SPEAKER_08: The international terminal, is that the focus?
- 16:58SPEAKER_08: Or what is what's like the timeline of events, and when will like that united terminal?
- 17:04SPEAKER_08: I'm just worried about how this is gonna affect me and my travel.
- 17:08SPEAKER_08: What is going on with terminal one?
- 17:10SPEAKER_05: There's a lot going on, and um, and this all started um with Bear Emanuel.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: Um, this construction will go for the next 10-15 years.
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: Wow.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Um different phasing.
- 17:24SPEAKER_05: Um but you know, I I can't stress enough that if you don't invest and modernize, you're gonna fall behind.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: But um I mentioned there's 50,000 employees.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: These projects, these are job creators.
- 17:39SPEAKER_05: Thousands of jobs are created by this well-paying career jobs, um, and it generates incredible revenue.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, not just for the city of Chicago, state of Illinois, the greater Midwest.
- 17:53SPEAKER_08: I'm excited about it, and I do hope the terminal is close to the runways, because right now that doesn't seem to be the case.
- 17:59SPEAKER_08: Right now you land at O'Hare.
- 18:01SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 18:01SPEAKER_08: Dude, and by the way, you do not get credit for landing early.
- 18:06SPEAKER_08: Because you'll land sometimes, like, hey, we got you here 20 minutes early, but uh it's gonna take 45 minutes to get to the gate, and they're not gonna bring the jet bridge to the door.
- 18:15SPEAKER_06: So as it stands, you'll actually arrive nine minutes late.
- 18:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 18:19SPEAKER_08: It's and how do you feel about staying seated for the people that they have a connecting flight?
- 18:25SPEAKER_08: That's a new thing, too.
- 18:26SPEAKER_08: And sometimes I'll be looking like, hey, we were scheduled to land at 140, and we're about to get off the plane at 135.
- 18:33SPEAKER_06: So Why do you guys still sit down?
- 18:35SPEAKER_08: We're still sitting down for these people.
- 18:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: I'll I'll take that up with the FA.
- 18:40SPEAKER_08: All right, yeah, yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_06: We're just air.
- 18:44SPEAKER_06: I thought you were you treating him like a drunk car.
- 18:46SPEAKER_06: Yes, sir.
- 18:47SPEAKER_06: We'll get right on that.
- 18:49SPEAKER_06: I'll write a letter.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Who is T Chenley?
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: The man your girl dreams about in her wildest romanticy fantasies.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: He's a damn special man who cleanses and moisturizes his hands-and-masked face the right way every day.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: And he knows that investing in his skincare with premium products is all part of the grind.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: It's time for you to step out of the shadows by using a skincare system that makes you undeniable.

- 19:21SPEAKER_06: How come um the Bears couldn't keep a stadium, a new stadium in Chicago?
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: What a mess we have there.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: You know, you you've got an issue that taxpayers don't want to fit the bill for yet another stadium.
- 19:39SPEAKER_05: Uh the Bears still owe more than$500 million on what we did at O uh at Soldier Field 20 years ago.
- 19:48SPEAKER_06: Oh man.
- 19:49SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 19:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 19:50SPEAKER_06: Sound like me.
- 19:52SPEAKER_06: You know, they've been talking about it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_06: Will they have to pay that?
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: They will have to pay that.
- 19:57SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_05: Uh and if they're gonna leave, they should be paying a hell of a lot more.
- 20:02SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, they're negotiating with Arlington Heights, they're negotiating with the state of Indiana.
- 20:09SPEAKER_06: Um What do you think about that?
- 20:11SPEAKER_06: How do you think that's gonna go?
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: I think now um elected officials at the state level are trying to figure out a way to keep them here somewhere in the state.
- 20:21SPEAKER_05: Um the other issue we have is they're the Chicago Bears.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're in Chicago, they want to go up to Arlington Heights.
- 20:31SPEAKER_05: How do people vote for something that takes the Chicago Bears out of Chicago?
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: And what what does the city get for that?
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they still owe more than closer to 600 million on Soldier Field from the work that was done uh during the Daly administration 20 years ago.
- 20:50SPEAKER_08: They've had a sweetheart deal all along because they never had to own uh you know you know what's amazing, we're all Bear fans.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: Absolutely the Bears use Soldier Field at best 12 days out of the year.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Um I have to explain this for Pat.
- 21:08SPEAKER_05: There's 365 days in the year.
- 21:10SPEAKER_05: Um it's 12 days.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: Some years.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: Some years it's even less.
- 21:18SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, and there certainly is an argument if the Bears are gonna go, there's a lot of things we could do with Soldier Field.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: It could certainly host uh a lot more big events.
- 21:31SPEAKER_05: I think it could probably host a Pat McGann up on stage with Twin Kennedy.
- 21:36SPEAKER_06: You know, that that that would draw tens of people.
- 21:42SPEAKER_08: What we're gonna do with the rest of the stadium, man.
- 21:45SPEAKER_08: We'll do it up in the in the Cadillac Club.
- 21:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the um it bums me out to think that they would move.
- 21:52SPEAKER_08: And uh it seems maybe inevitable though.
- 21:55SPEAKER_08: And I think it's gonna be Arlington Heights.
- 21:57SPEAKER_08: I think the Indiana thing is I think it would
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: Just because if it was Indiana, which actually would be closer for me, but you know, Hammond.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: But what would that do for Pritzker's chances as far as getting reelected?
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: Well politically that th this has now become a real problem for the governor.
- 22:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: If the Bears leave on his watch.
- 22:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:22SPEAKER_05: That's a real big political problem.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: So on one hand, you've got taxpayers screaming and yelling, don't give any more of these sports teams a stadium, which I would imagine if you put a poll out there would be overwhelming saying don't give them taxpayer dollars.
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: And on the other hand, you don't want them leaving.
- 22:40SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 22:40SPEAKER_06: Because the moment they left and went to if they went to Indiana, they would say, How the could you let the team leave?
- 22:47SPEAKER_06: Well, what are you talking about?
- 22:49SPEAKER_08: Did you have, and I don't want to put you on a spot here, but uh, you know, did you have did it become a vote?
- 22:55SPEAKER_08: Did the George Lucas Star Wars thing come up to an actual vote to the city council?
- 23:00SPEAKER_08: Did it get that far?
- 23:01SPEAKER_08: Oh my goodness.
- 23:02SPEAKER_08: Was that a fumble?
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: The again, Mayor Emmanuel um recruited and was working with George Lucas on bringing that museum to Chicago's lakefront.
- 23:17SPEAKER_05: Has anybody looked at what's going on on LA with that?
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: No.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: We could use that revenue right now.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: Man, um friends of the park.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: That's what I was gonna.
- 23:26SPEAKER_06: Who are they?
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: Um you know oh my gosh.
- 23:31SPEAKER_08: Dwayne loves Star Wars.
- 23:34SPEAKER_06: I wanted it to be here.
- 23:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, who are the friends of the park, man?
- 23:38SPEAKER_06: Um who are they friends of the party?
- 23:41SPEAKER_05: They stood up and fought and were a loud voice and blocked it from happening.
- 23:46SPEAKER_05: Um we certainly could have used that revenue.
- 23:48SPEAKER_08: You know, and I was gonna be where?
- 23:50SPEAKER_08: Where exactly where was it going to be?
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: Um, it was going to be south of existing Soldier Field, um near the original McCormick place.
- 24:02SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
- 24:03SPEAKER_08: That possibly, you know, we could have done something else with or so you could have McCormick Place there, but you can't have a George Lucas Star Wars museum.
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:15SPEAKER_06: According to Friends of the Park.
- 24:16SPEAKER_06: When did that when did that group come into existing?
- 24:19SPEAKER_05: If you ever watch a city council meeting, it's like sometimes you're in the Star Wars bar.
- 24:25SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: You all need a museum.
- 24:28SPEAKER_08: Um I I think about that often, like So it's open and running in LA, this museum?
- 24:36SPEAKER_05: They just opened.
- 24:37SPEAKER_08: They did.
- 24:38SPEAKER_06: Oh my goodness, man.
- 24:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 24:40SPEAKER_05: Hundreds of millions of dollars infused into the LA economy.
- 24:44SPEAKER_05: All the people in hotels and restaurants.
- 24:48SPEAKER_08: Um and they had it like the drawings I saw, most of it was kind of underground anyway.
- 24:53SPEAKER_05: It wasn't gonna look like too much of a anything George Lucas is gonna do was gonna be unbelievable.
- 25:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 25:03SPEAKER_06: So how how can you how can we start a petition to get rid of friends of the park?
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right?
- 25:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_06: What about that part?
- 25:11SPEAKER_05: They're not friends of Star Wars.
- 25:13SPEAKER_06: They're not seemingly anything.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 25:15SPEAKER_06: Because weren't they didn't they have an issue with the putting a new stadium?
- 25:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_06: They got an issue with everything.
- 25:21SPEAKER_06: They had an issue with this show.
- 25:22SPEAKER_08: They better be at the park all the time.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: You should have them on the show.
- 25:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 25:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 25:27SPEAKER_06: Who runs it?
- 25:28SPEAKER_06: It's like it's like anonymous.
- 25:30SPEAKER_08: Is there a uh a face to the organization or a name or a few people?
- 25:35SPEAKER_05: I don't even know who's their leadership now.
- 25:39SPEAKER_05: Um yeah.
- 25:42SPEAKER_05: You should write a letter, Dwayne.
- 25:44SPEAKER_06: To who?
- 25:45SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna write it to you.
- 25:47SPEAKER_08: Meet me at Meet me at the park.
- 25:50SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna beat your ass.
- 25:51SPEAKER_06: Then you'll see who's a friend.
- 25:54SPEAKER_06: Yeah, man.
- 25:55SPEAKER_08: Well, that's cra that's crazy.
- 25:57SPEAKER_08: I didn't realize it was already uh open.
- 25:59SPEAKER_08: I mean that sucks, man.
- 26:01SPEAKER_08: It does.
- 26:02SPEAKER_08: It also seems kind of silly, too, that there's a Star Wars museum.
- 26:08SPEAKER_08: But we could have had that.
- 26:09SPEAKER_06: We could have had that, man.
- 26:11SPEAKER_06: Like you said, business, just you know, revenue and jobs and come on.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Hundreds of jobs, thousands of jobs to build, hundreds of jobs to operate.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: I was in an event a couple weeks ago and was asked to make some comments to some kids in the crowd.
- 26:26SPEAKER_05: And uh I finished with Shut the hell up, kids.
- 26:31SPEAKER_05: Pay attention.
- 26:32SPEAKER_05: Get off your phones and go volunteer for a charitable cause.
- 26:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 26:37SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: And every kid's got one of these six hundred dollar phones, and so many of these kids they're they're they haven't developed socially.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: They don't know how to talk to one another, they don't know how to work out their differences.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: You see it in school, you see it in athletics, uh, you certainly see it with the parents.
- 26:56SPEAKER_08: Um Has there ever been talk about uh in the city council about legislation with in regard to technology and kids or phones and kids?
- 27:07SPEAKER_08: And how much can you do?
- 27:09SPEAKER_05: There's legislation right now in Springfield being considered about um banning of cell phones in schools.
- 27:19SPEAKER_08: Um and other places have done this?
- 27:21SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 27:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: And you know, there's two arguments.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: Um you know, God forbid something goes wrong, your child wants to be able to call their parents or or call 911.
- 27:35SPEAKER_05: And then the other thing is these kids have these phones out in class, uh, whether it's they're not paying attention uh to what the instructor's saying, the teacher's saying, or they're doing something they shouldn't be doing on the phone.
- 27:50SPEAKER_05: But it's unbelievable the amount of time that is wasted dealing with children, particularly young children, with these six hundred dollar devices when they should be in the classroom learning.
- 28:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's insane.
- 28:02SPEAKER_08: And then you have parents texting their kids during the day too.
- 28:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_08: And then it's like, yeah, who's Hello?
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, kinda insane.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Like posts and reels and follow the Pat McGann show on Instagram.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: At the Pat McGann Show on Instagram.

- 28:26SPEAKER_01: That's the Pat McGann show at Teege.com.
- 28:30SPEAKER_08: Shifting gears a little bit.
- 28:31SPEAKER_08: We got St.
- 28:32SPEAKER_08: Patty's Day coming up.
- 28:33SPEAKER_08: It's March, it's Chicago, they're gonna be dying the river green.
- 28:37SPEAKER_08: By the way, there's restaurants along the river, and they are selling seats to watch the river get dyed green.
- 28:45SPEAKER_08: So they have like packages.
- 28:46SPEAKER_08: I just saw this.
- 28:47SPEAKER_08: I didn't know this was a thing.
- 28:48SPEAKER_08: So if you want to go to a restaurant on the river, have lunch that day or whatever today, it's like 250, 300 bucks to go in there, have uh maybe it's a brunch style buffet or whatever it is.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: But this is they're monetizing this.
- 29:04SPEAKER_06: Man, did you hear that?
- 29:05SPEAKER_08: That's a good idea.
- 29:06SPEAKER_05: Did you ever see that boat?
- 29:07SPEAKER_05: No, the plumbers union goes out there and the actual the is that who dyes it?
- 29:11SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:12SPEAKER_06: Um, the plumbers union always had that business locked up.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: The dye is it's like an orange.
- 29:19SPEAKER_05: The dye is actually orange going in the whatever the how long have they been doing this?
- 29:24SPEAKER_08: You even know the history of this?
- 29:25SPEAKER_08: They've been dyeing the river green for as long as I can remember.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: As long as I can remember.
- 29:28SPEAKER_08: It was like the 80s.
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: I'd like to be on the boat and inhale all that stuff as they're dumped it off.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: Oh boy.
- 29:34SPEAKER_05: That's a seat I'd pay for.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: And then you soup a green lung.
- 29:37SPEAKER_08: It kind of is and was already green all the time.
- 29:40SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's what people always say, remember?
- 29:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: It's pretty cool when they do it because it stays that emerald green for most of the week.
- 29:49unknown: 1962.
- 29:50SPEAKER_06: That's when it started?
- 29:51SPEAKER_08: That's when they started?
- 29:52SPEAKER_08: 1962.
- 29:53SPEAKER_08: I wouldn't have guessed that.
- 29:53SPEAKER_06: Was it on purpose or by accident?
- 29:55unknown: On purpose.
- 29:56SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 29:57SPEAKER_08: Oh, that's wild.
- 29:58SPEAKER_06: So that was daily.
- 29:59SPEAKER_06: That was his idea.
- 30:00SPEAKER_06: I mean, we're going to.
- 30:01SPEAKER_06: That would have been under Mayor Richard J.
- 30:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 30:03SPEAKER_08: Oh, I thought you were saying I was like, no, they only did it once a year.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: No, daily.
- 30:08SPEAKER_08: We're going again and again.
- 30:10SPEAKER_08: The um the Southside Parade, though.
- 30:12SPEAKER_08: I mean, obviously we have the parade, Irish.
- 30:15SPEAKER_08: The Southside Irish.
- 30:16SPEAKER_08: The um the downtown parade I've never really been to.
- 30:20SPEAKER_08: You see it represented in the.
- 30:21SPEAKER_05: You can't even compare to the Southside Parade.
- 30:24SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 30:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I wonder.
- 30:25SPEAKER_05: It's like the minor leagues and the major leagues.
- 30:27SPEAKER_08: And it's really heavy with uh some of the political stuff.
- 30:33SPEAKER_08: It's in the fugitive, the downtown parade.
- 30:35SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 30:35SPEAKER_08: Remember that?
- 30:36SPEAKER_08: He's running.
- 30:36SPEAKER_08: He kind of blends in, puts a hat on.
- 30:38SPEAKER_08: And they filmed that like the real day of the parade.
- 30:41SPEAKER_08: Oh, for real.
- 30:42SPEAKER_08: Heard that.
- 30:42SPEAKER_08: Like they didn't even have they didn't have permit permits.
- 30:45SPEAKER_08: They just did like gorilla style.
- 30:47SPEAKER_08: Uh-huh.
- 30:49SPEAKER_06: I probably say, is that Harrison Ford running through the?
- 30:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_08: What's his problem?
- 30:53SPEAKER_06: I thought he was doing good.
- 30:54SPEAKER_06: That's when Harrison Ford.
- 30:55SPEAKER_08: He was here and he and he and he said to George Lucas, like, hey man, this would be a good spot for all that Han Solo shit you're saving.
- 31:03SPEAKER_06: You should do a museum.
- 31:05SPEAKER_06: You know, at the time they had no friends of the park.
- 31:09SPEAKER_08: Oh my God, that's your legacy.
- 31:11SPEAKER_08: I stopped that.
- 31:12SPEAKER_08: You know there was gonna be a museum there?
- 31:15SPEAKER_08: Thanks to me, it's just grass.
- 31:18SPEAKER_08: See this dirt?
- 31:20SPEAKER_08: This this that's because of me.
- 31:22SPEAKER_08: They were gonna cultivate this land and make millions of dollars out of it.
- 31:26SPEAKER_08: But I was like, no way.
- 31:27SPEAKER_08: I want leaves here.
- 31:29SPEAKER_08: Enjoy.
- 31:30SPEAKER_08: Have a good time.
- 31:32SPEAKER_08: So the Southside Parade, though, is huge.
- 31:34SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 31:35SPEAKER_08: Let's talk about the history of it.
- 31:37SPEAKER_05: Uh started in 1979.
- 31:40SPEAKER_06: Oh, I thought it was that's pretty young.
- 31:43SPEAKER_06: Really?
- 31:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:45SPEAKER_08: And it started as going around the block.
- 31:48SPEAKER_08: It was just the first one.
- 31:51SPEAKER_08: If I I did march in the first one.
- 31:54SPEAKER_08: Well, not the very first one.
- 31:55SPEAKER_08: The first one they when they went around the park.
- 31:58SPEAKER_08: The second one when they went to like Kennedy.
- 32:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 32:00SPEAKER_08: The we folks of Washington Talman.
- 32:04SPEAKER_08: That's how that's how this thing began.
- 32:07SPEAKER_05: George Hendry and Pat Coakley.
- 32:09SPEAKER_08: George Hendry and Pat Coakley.
- 32:10SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 32:11SPEAKER_08: Um Marianne Coakley and uh Mary Hendry also really involved.
- 32:15SPEAKER_08: Like the in the um the Hendries and Coakley families are still in the neighborhood and a big part of it.
- 32:22SPEAKER_08: This thing is blew up.
- 32:24SPEAKER_06: That's funny, man.
- 32:25SPEAKER_08: So talk about the growth of it, where it's at now, because if you ever come to Chicago, and then my daughter asks me this question all the time.
- 32:32SPEAKER_08: When people come to Chicago, you think they come to our neighborhood?
- 32:35SPEAKER_08: You think they ever come out here?
- 32:37SPEAKER_08: You know, what would you how would you get them to come out here?
- 32:40SPEAKER_08: What would you tell them to do?
- 32:41SPEAKER_08: You know?
- 32:42SPEAKER_08: And the the parade day is when most people, probably if you've been to our neighborhood or whatever, come to our neighborhood would be this day.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 32:51SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, this Sunday, 12 noon step off at 103rd and Western.
- 32:56SPEAKER_05: Uh many great things identify with the history of our community, and certainly the Southside Irish Parade is the top of the list.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: There's lots of great parades in our city.
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: There's now several parades for St.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: Patrick's Day.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: Nothing compares to the Southside Irish Parade.
- 33:15SPEAKER_05: It's about family, faith, heritage.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: Uh it's a wonderful way to showcase our neighborhood for people to see, you know, that might not know about the history of our neighbor to come out and I can't tell you how many times they hear stories of someone that they came to the Southside Irish Parade, then they went to a couple house parties, they ended up buying a house in the neighborhood and raising a family there.
- 33:37SPEAKER_08: Really?
- 33:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 33:39SPEAKER_08: It's uh They must have been really drunk.
- 33:43SPEAKER_08: It's uh babe, I'm buying a house.
- 33:46SPEAKER_08: What?
- 33:46SPEAKER_08: How long is this parade gonna last?
- 33:48SPEAKER_08: How about 20 years?
- 33:50SPEAKER_08: Just signing, signing a contract with those diddly boppers on.
- 33:54SPEAKER_05: Like, this is mine now.
- 33:56SPEAKER_05: It really is it's a family parade, um, which is what parade should be.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: It's not about the politicians, um it's about marching bands and families on floats.
- 34:09SPEAKER_05: Uh certainly there's some elected officials there, but um it's a great way to kick off spring, too.
- 34:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, they never really gave the politicians like the best place in the parade.
- 34:20SPEAKER_08: They're never like the top, you know, first one through twenty-five.
- 34:23SPEAKER_08: They're in the back.
- 34:24SPEAKER_08: They're in the back.
- 34:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 34:25SPEAKER_08: And they've had some big names too.
- 34:27SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 34:27SPEAKER_08: They've had some presidential candidates.
- 34:30SPEAKER_05: In 92, all the top presidential candidates were there.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: Oh, wow.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: Uh Clinton.
- 34:35SPEAKER_05: Including Clinton, uh Songus.
- 34:38SPEAKER_05: Um Gary Hart, was he one of them?
- 34:40SPEAKER_08: Gary Hart was not there.
- 34:42SPEAKER_08: He was at uh Polcat's nearby.
- 34:45SPEAKER_08: He missed the parade.
- 34:49SPEAKER_06: Um man.
- 34:53SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:53SPEAKER_06: So how long is the parade now?
- 34:55SPEAKER_06: Where does it go?
- 34:56SPEAKER_06: From where to where?
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: It goes 10 city blocks from 103rd Street to 113th Street.
- 35:01SPEAKER_05: Uh at Kennedy Park is where it concludes.
- 35:03SPEAKER_08: And by the way, it ends at Kennedy Park.
- 35:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_08: Named after D.J.
- 35:08SPEAKER_08: Kennedy.
- 35:09SPEAKER_06: Dwayne Kennedy Park.
- 35:10SPEAKER_08: Dwayne Kennedy Park.
- 35:11SPEAKER_06: 1320 South.
- 35:12SPEAKER_06: And I'm there to greet them every time when there's a welcome.
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: I've been waiting.
- 35:16SPEAKER_06: Friends of the park tried to give me the boot, but here I am.
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: Here I stand.
- 35:21SPEAKER_06: You know, it's funny.
- 35:22SPEAKER_06: So you say the first parade was just people, it's it sounded like the first parade just started out of sarcasm and anger.
- 35:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:29SPEAKER_06: You want a parade?
- 35:30SPEAKER_06: You want a parade?
- 35:31SPEAKER_06: I'll walk here, walk around the block.
- 35:32SPEAKER_06: There's your parade.
- 35:33SPEAKER_06: Now don't bother me about it anymore.
- 35:35SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, there's a great story.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: Um, it was, I believe it was 1980, the day of the parade.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: Mayor Jane Byrne um was upset with many people in the city council uh and she threatened to pull the Chicago Police Department from at the parade.
- 35:56SPEAKER_05: And uh Mike Sheehan uh reached out to the Illinois State Police who said I got it back.
- 36:05SPEAKER_05: We got your back, we'll be there.
- 36:07SPEAKER_05: Um you know, because that parade will have as many as 250,000 people.
- 36:13SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: That's that's a lot of people to be in a south side too.
- 36:20SPEAKER_08: Like you can't use the cops.
- 36:21SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, I got a guy.
- 36:23SPEAKER_08: We'll get other cops.
- 36:24SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 36:25SPEAKER_08: I know I know a police force.
- 36:27SPEAKER_05: You know, they're think you're the only police force.
- 36:30SPEAKER_05: And the the parade committee is is people we grew up with.
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: In fact, this year um the chairman is is Bill Letz.
- 36:37SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 36:38SPEAKER_05: And Mr.
- 36:39SPEAKER_05: Letts, I think he's been on the committee since 1981.
- 36:43SPEAKER_08: He's always right there at 103rd and Western helping people start the parade.
- 36:47SPEAKER_08: He's in charge.
- 36:47SPEAKER_08: You know, one parade memory I have, a um a grand marshal years past was um, I believe his name is Tim, Tim McCarthy.
- 36:55SPEAKER_08: He took a bullet for Ronald Reagan.
- 36:58SPEAKER_08: Oh, Reagan.
- 36:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 36:59SPEAKER_06: And he became McMayor of Orland Park.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 37:03SPEAKER_05: Uh Leo, high school graduate.
- 37:05SPEAKER_05: Um see the Southside is tied to everything.
- 37:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 37:09SPEAKER_08: There he is.
- 37:10SPEAKER_08: They try and kill Reagan.
- 37:12SPEAKER_08: Who was that, Hinckley?
- 37:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 37:14SPEAKER_08: Shoots Reagan and the Southsider.
- 37:17SPEAKER_04: He's not like they have to be able to do that.
- 37:18SPEAKER_04: Tim McCarthy jumps in front of the bullet.
- 37:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he sure did.
- 37:21SPEAKER_08: It really incredible.
- 37:23SPEAKER_08: And um I don't know who the Grand Marshal is this year, but they've had a lot of um I think we've had an Olympic um hockey player.
- 37:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, we've we've had several Olympic athletes come out to the parade in March.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Um this year uh the Grand Marshal is Tunnels for Towers, which has helped um everything from post-9-11 to um veterans who have served tragedies.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Um they actually purchased uh a home for Danny Golden, the show.
- 37:56SPEAKER_05: Oh wow, yeah.
- 37:58SPEAKER_05: Uh a wonderful organization based out of New York, but um has also been helpful to uh first responders and uh military veterans here.
- 38:07SPEAKER_05: Um and St.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: Christina, which is uh celebrating a big anniversary.
- 38:12SPEAKER_05: So those are the two honorees this year that um Marsh Grand Marshall and the special honorary.
- 38:18SPEAKER_08: Very cool.
- 38:18SPEAKER_06: Hey, would you shoot an episode from the parade?
- 38:21SPEAKER_06: Is that too much?
- 38:22SPEAKER_08: No, we could do that one year for sure.
- 38:24SPEAKER_08: I don't know if we could pull out.
- 38:25SPEAKER_08: I can't do it this year because I'm gonna be out of town.
- 38:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but that would be a lot of fun.
- 38:28SPEAKER_08: You know, live from the South Side.
- 38:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you win the first parade?
- 38:32SPEAKER_06: Come on, man.
- 38:33SPEAKER_08: You mentioned the um New York city, the New York police used to come and firemen.
- 38:38SPEAKER_08: They used to come and march.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: We have hundreds of um first responders from New York that still.
- 38:44SPEAKER_06: What about Boston?
- 38:45SPEAKER_06: It seemed like that would be a time.
- 38:46SPEAKER_05: We get some Bostonians, yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_06: Is it televised?
- 38:51SPEAKER_08: Um have it on a um it's streamed somewhere.
- 38:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah, from County Fair.
- 38:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, the greatest independent grocery store in the world.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:02SPEAKER_06: That's what I heard.
- 39:03SPEAKER_08: No doubt.
- 39:03SPEAKER_08: I've mentioned County Fair on air a bunch of times.
- 39:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 39:06SPEAKER_08: Um but yeah, the um the parade is a great deal uh uh uh uh for our neighborhood.
- 39:12SPEAKER_08: We also have an Irish castle in our neighborhood.
- 39:14SPEAKER_08: We have easy access with the Metro.
- 39:16SPEAKER_08: Coming to the South Side is pretty easy.
- 39:20SPEAKER_08: What's that?
- 39:20SPEAKER_05: We have a uh Gibbons Irish Castle at 103rd and Longwood.
- 39:25SPEAKER_08: You've seen those homes in Longwood.
- 39:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I've passed that a bunch of times.
- 39:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, when you've come out and performed in our neighborhood, you've seen it.
- 39:31unknown: Yeah.
- 39:32SPEAKER_08: What's the yeah, what's the our neighborhood is super Catholic.
- 39:34SPEAKER_08: This is the most Irish Catholic thing about our neighborhood.
- 39:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 39:37SPEAKER_08: Is uh we have Irish Catholic neighborhood and then we have an Irish castle, but the Irish castle is run by like Protestants, like Unitarian.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: It's like it's not even we don't even get our own the Catholics, don't even get the Irish castle.
- 39:49SPEAKER_08: You gotta be on the outside of it.
- 39:51SPEAKER_06: Like ah the colonization never ends.
- 39:55SPEAKER_08: Even over here, it's same old, same old.
- 39:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I've always I've yeah, past that castle a bunch of times.
- 40:01SPEAKER_08: I'm like, what's the they had their castle up there and then they must have had leftover limestone because they built a another it was a live was that the library?
- 40:08SPEAKER_08: What was the uh Starbucks down there?
- 40:11SPEAKER_08: Oh um used to be something before now it's a Starbucks.
- 40:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was a Starbucks.
- 40:16SPEAKER_08: That was a small church.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: A lot of the neighborhoods' problems are solved at that Starbucks path.
- 40:20SPEAKER_08: No doubt.
- 40:20SPEAKER_08: That's where the minds meet.
- 40:22SPEAKER_08: That's where they're all talking about you.
- 40:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 40:25SPEAKER_08: Questioning every move.
- 40:28SPEAKER_08: Teach Hamley has changed my life.
- 40:32SPEAKER_06: Skin has been amazing.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're the number one men's skincare routine in America.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: When I got here, they go, uh, we're just waiting for the podcast guest.
- 40:41SPEAKER_03: We know you're here for pictures.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: For your model?
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you guys, he's glowing.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: In fact, they brighten was like, your skin's awesome.
- 40:47SPEAKER_06: Just like I look forward to like, I'm washing my face before I go to sleep.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: I think we haven't had any 40-year-olds on the podcast, and I said I'm 50, and everyone goes, What?
- 40:55SPEAKER_03: Tee Shannley.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: It's the way we face the day.
- 40:59SPEAKER_08: But um, listen, I know you're very busy.
- 41:02SPEAKER_08: What is the um on your plate right now?
- 41:05SPEAKER_08: You have the aviation stuff.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: What are the other pressing issues for our city?
- 41:10SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, obviously our our financial stability.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: Um we're we're in a crisis here.
- 41:18SPEAKER_05: Uh we had a north of a um billion dollar deficit last year.
- 41:25SPEAKER_05: Uh this year we'll we'll be right there.
- 41:28SPEAKER_05: Um difficult decisions need to be made.
- 41:32SPEAKER_05: Uh when difficult decisions are made, that means people have to sit down and and and work together.
- 41:37SPEAKER_08: There was a bit of some asset selling in our city in uh maybe what 15 years ago?
- 41:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 41:43SPEAKER_08: Some of it um the meters, the skyway.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: 15 years ago.
- 41:47SPEAKER_06: Those are horrible.
- 41:48SPEAKER_08: Meters, Skyway.
- 41:50SPEAKER_08: Are there any other like do we have any other assets we can sell?
- 41:53SPEAKER_08: Uh we can uh we've Hey man, anyone want a river?
- 41:58SPEAKER_05: It doesn't flow the right way, but anytime someone's brought up the discussion of selling off any city assets um that is quickly um we gotta hold on to them.
- 42:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 42:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 42:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah so now it's just getting creative, getting tighter with the I mean, that's gotta be a pain in the ass, dude.
- 42:17SPEAKER_08: And you do a great job with the police.
- 42:18SPEAKER_08: I know that um and even this has kind of become like signaling or it it's almost it's ridiculous like to think that supporting law enforcement signals how you are politically or what you think, like but take this out, put the humanity in it.
- 42:36SPEAKER_08: You uh um spearheaded this movement for get behind the vest.
- 42:41SPEAKER_08: In the budget for the police department, they don't issue our police officers bulletproof s.
- 42:47SPEAKER_08: They have to buy it on their own.
- 42:49SPEAKER_06: Oh, for real?
- 42:50SPEAKER_08: And I think you did a show with with me, maybe for get behind the vest with fundraising.
- 42:55SPEAKER_08: Matt, this is one of your babies.
- 42:58SPEAKER_08: Like in, you know, you have this fundraiser every year, you have the pancake breakfast, you've raised a ton of dough getting police officers bulletproof s.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: So, yeah, police officers when they graduate from the Chicago Police Academy, they're issued a vest.
- 43:13SPEAKER_05: Um much thicker than this vest.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: Okay, good.
- 43:16SPEAKER_05: Um that vest has a lifespan, it's about five years.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: You know, uh the fibers wear down, perspiration, if it's not stored properly, et cetera, et cetera.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Every five years, police officers have to replace the vest.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: What they found 11 years ago in 2014 when they kicked off this campaign was that there were police officers wearing a vest for 20, 25 years.
- 43:42SPEAKER_06: Whoa.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: Uh heaven forbid if something were to happen, um a bullet to the chest, uh that vest wouldn't save them.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: So the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation kicked off this campaign under the direction of Phil Klein.
- 43:59SPEAKER_05: I was at the press.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Conference and I turned to Phil and I said, I'd really like to do something in my neighborhood.
- 44:05SPEAKER_05: I think we could really make a difference.
- 44:08SPEAKER_05: And he said, Have at it.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: And uh we just had our twelfth annual get behind the vest pancake breakfast, which is so much more than a breakfast, but we've raised just short of a million dollars to purchase vests to protect.
- 44:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:24SPEAKER_06: Now, what do you do that with the old vests that you give them to friends of the park?
- 44:30SPEAKER_08: With that money, they make one gold-plated diamond studded vest every year, and there's one officer that gets a vest.
- 44:38SPEAKER_08: Every year we give one away.
- 44:41SPEAKER_08: That's who we use with the money.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:42SPEAKER_05: You know, and as important as it is to raise funds to protect police officers, I think it's it's just another way to say we support them.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: Um we want to partner with them.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: Um and the only way we're gonna keep this nationwide thing we have of of a reduction in violent crime is if there's more partnership.
- 45:06SPEAKER_05: And I know there have been instances of police officers that have done things.
- 45:12SPEAKER_05: But 99% of them men and women out there in uniform today, every day leave their house, putting their life in danger to protect people.
- 45:22SPEAKER_05: They don't even know.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: Um it's such an honorable and noble profession.
- 45:27SPEAKER_05: I just think it's important that our community um do their part, and it's something that I'm very proud to be a part of.
- 45:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you've done a great job.
- 45:34SPEAKER_08: That's really part of your legacy, and uh man, I just can't believe um all the things that you've had to like go through these last I mean i at one point I thought of you as like having, oh, that's a cool gig, that's a great job.
- 45:52SPEAKER_08: You get to be all to me, you're like, but man, you've been shoveling through stuff the last seven, eight years.
- 45:57SPEAKER_08: I mean, just guiding the people through the COVID years and dealing with all this uncertainty.
- 46:04SPEAKER_05: We did some great things together during COVID.
- 46:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we really did.
- 46:07SPEAKER_08: The three of us did.
- 46:08SPEAKER_08: We did.
- 46:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: We did some virtual shows, we did some when you when you couldn't be inside, we did outdoor comedy shows.
- 46:18SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah, we did outdoor shows too.
- 46:20SPEAKER_05: Um you know, people needed laughter.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Now more than ever, people need laughter, but it especially during the pandemic when you know you you you didn't see your friends, you had to work from home.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: Um once we got the green light, we did several comedy shows that were pretty fun.
- 46:40SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna be honest with you, Matt.
- 46:42SPEAKER_06: Other than the death, I love the pandemic.
- 46:45SPEAKER_06: Not seeing people and just everything shut down.
- 46:49SPEAKER_06: That's kind of my personality.
- 46:51SPEAKER_08: Get to ponder more?
- 46:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, ponder, get stared at more walls.
- 46:55SPEAKER_06: You know, it was working out great for me.
- 46:57SPEAKER_06: I hope this never ends.
- 46:58SPEAKER_08: Matt's always been a good supporter of the arts and comedy, and you know it was cool.
- 47:03SPEAKER_08: You got to do this.
- 47:04SPEAKER_08: It's pretty cool this year.
- 47:05SPEAKER_08: I saw you at uh the dedication of George Wendt Way, named the street after George Wendt from uh our neighborhood, Christ the King.
- 47:14SPEAKER_08: That was a a great honor and really nice to highlight and bring him some love.
- 47:21SPEAKER_05: The Wendt family reached out last year.
- 47:24SPEAKER_05: Uh George Wendt grew up on uh 92nd and Bell uh in the 19th ward.
- 47:30SPEAKER_05: Oh wow and I thought what a what a wonderful thing to honor uh someone who gave so much to many people such joy and laughter.
- 47:41SPEAKER_05: And I I I'll say it again, like we need more laughter in the world, um, which is why we need folks like you guys out there.
- 47:48SPEAKER_08: I know, and we we're coming out with a heavy episode this one.
- 47:54SPEAKER_08: Like, oh man, our city's broke, we got no chance.
- 47:58SPEAKER_08: Anyway, O'Hare's gonna take 20 years.
- 48:01SPEAKER_06: But I'm glad, I mean, I don't know why.
- 48:03SPEAKER_06: Just O'Hare's number one again.
- 48:05SPEAKER_08: Y'all the busiest?
- 48:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:07SPEAKER_08: We got more going on here than anybody.
- 48:09SPEAKER_06: Atlanta can suck it.
- 48:10SPEAKER_08: Dude, talking about flying.
- 48:12SPEAKER_08: I was in Dayton, Ohio this past weekend.
- 48:13SPEAKER_08: Hey, if you came out to the shows at the funny moment in Dayton, it was great to see you.
- 48:17SPEAKER_08: I went to school, UD.
- 48:18SPEAKER_08: I think I've told you that.
- 48:19SPEAKER_08: I went to school in Dayton, Ohio.
- 48:20SPEAKER_08: You're a flyer.
- 48:21SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and I am a flyer.
- 48:22SPEAKER_08: I was thinking about the I was trying to riff like on the Ripe Brothers on my way down there, you know?
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: So it's kind of like, but do you ever like contemplate these dudes the that they came up with?
- 48:33SPEAKER_08: Like I was kind of thinking like let's put it in the air.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 48:39SPEAKER_08: I mean, can you imagine working on this with your brother too?
- 48:41SPEAKER_08: And you accomplish flight?
- 48:44unknown: Yeah.
- 48:45SPEAKER_08: And that they were in the uh bikes.
- 48:47SPEAKER_08: Like these guys just want to go places.
- 48:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:50SPEAKER_06: Anything to get out of Dayton.
- 48:52SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 48:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:53SPEAKER_06: Like, I'm gonna want a bike out of Dayton, hey, that's not fast enough or high enough.
- 48:58SPEAKER_06: Let's fly out of Dayton.
- 49:00SPEAKER_08: You think they were ever selling somebody a bike and like, hey man, yeah, I'll sell this to you, but between me and you, a year from now, we're gonna be flying, dude.
- 49:10SPEAKER_06: And that's when they lost that bike business.
- 49:13SPEAKER_06: Okay, thanks.
- 49:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah, whatever.
- 49:14SPEAKER_06: Just you know, inflate my tire so I can get out of here.
- 49:17SPEAKER_05: They sold it to the Schwins.
- 49:19SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:20SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, the Schwinn.
- 49:21SPEAKER_06: Is that that's Chicago?
- 49:23SPEAKER_06: That's Chicago.
- 49:24SPEAKER_06: Do they still make Schwins or no?
- 49:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we still have a uh Beverly Bike just reopened at 111th uh in Rockwell.
- 49:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:33SPEAKER_08: Hundred years of business.
- 49:35SPEAKER_08: They opened in 1921, I believe.
- 49:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_08: In our neighborhood.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: Beverly bike.
- 49:40SPEAKER_08: It's a short.
- 49:40SPEAKER_08: Iconic sound.
- 49:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.

- 52:58SPEAKER_06: How do you do that, man?
- 52:59SPEAKER_06: Like, like you got a roast met.
- 53:02SPEAKER_06: Like, where in your mind do you say, I'm gonna say this, I'm not gonna say this?
- 53:06SPEAKER_05: And then where in your mind is you can say this or you can what I didn't think about before I agreed to do that.
- 53:12SPEAKER_08: What were some of the I'm trying to remember some of the jokes that were said that night.
- 53:17SPEAKER_08: We had a good one about Rom.

- 53:39SPEAKER_08: Oh, so fun.
- 53:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_08: And it was packed.
- 53:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah.

- 53:53SPEAKER_08: It's 900 in change.
- 53:54SPEAKER_08: Oh, nine hundred.
- 53:55SPEAKER_08: I like to exaggerate a little bit.
- 53:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 53:57SPEAKER_08: Twice as much.
- 53:58SPEAKER_08: What is that?
- 53:59SPEAKER_08: 10, 10K?
- 54:00SPEAKER_08: What is that?
- 54:01SPEAKER_08: It seems 250 people.
- 54:03SPEAKER_06: It used to be 20K and then Friends of the Fox that you know reduced.
- 54:07SPEAKER_08: Macaulay's got a beautiful theater.
- 54:08SPEAKER_08: That was a classroom.
- 54:12SPEAKER_08: Anyway.
- 54:14SPEAKER_08: The stage is something.
- 54:15SPEAKER_08: That was a pallet.
- 54:16SPEAKER_08: You're standing on a pallet with a tablecloth over it.
- 54:22SPEAKER_06: But that lighting system, it was a candle.
- 54:24SPEAKER_06: It was a tiki torch.
- 54:26SPEAKER_06: Huh?
- 54:27SPEAKER_06: Where was I at?
- 54:29SPEAKER_06: In my mind.
- 54:32SPEAKER_08: It was really something.
- 54:33SPEAKER_06: No, I used anyway.
- 54:35SPEAKER_06: Like I was baptized Catholic.
- 54:36SPEAKER_06: You Catholic?
- 54:37SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 54:38SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 54:39SPEAKER_06: Okay.

- 55:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the park is not friends with you.
- 55:13SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 55:14SPEAKER_06: It's ridiculous.
- 55:15SPEAKER_08: The park loves you?
- 55:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 55:17SPEAKER_08: We can have an alderman.
- 55:18SPEAKER_08: We have never had an alderman.

- 57:29SPEAKER_08: A kid would draw, a kid would design, or someone in the city would design the city sticker.
- 57:33SPEAKER_08: Now it's just the numbers.
