Transcript
- 0:11Yo, you're listening to the Heavy mag podcast, bringing new interviews with the
- 0:15biggest and best artists in heavy music from around the world. I'm as and
- 0:19this episode I got to speak with Laws and Aaron of UK metalcore band While
- 0:24She Sleeps. Those guys are making their way out to OZ in the coming
- 0:27weeks to kick it on the massive Good Things Festival, as well as doing
- 0:31some headliner shows too, So let's jump into it. Thanks so much for
- 0:43joining me on the Heavy podcast tonight. I've got While She Sleeps based and
- 0:48vocal guys, Aaron and Loss and I feel like I want to start with
- 0:53like hashtag big Things Coming, because you blokes are on your way to Australia
- 0:58and you've got a new album on the way. But I wanted to start
- 1:02with the Good Things Festival. What are you guys doing to prepare yourself for
- 1:07Australian summer? Both of you are wearing beanies right now. It's telling me
- 1:11that you're not acclimatized in any way, shape or form. No, that's
- 1:15the weird thing about like touring a place that's a lot warmer than where you
- 1:19are right now. You sort of put all your winter or your summer clothes
- 1:23away and then we're like I've been digging out my shorts and stuff and trying
- 1:26to figure out how hot it's going to be. Actually, I think that
- 1:30because it's been pretty cold over here recently, it's actually going to be so
- 1:34nice to just come over there and just bang of shit on or not and
- 1:38I just enjoy some sun before Christmas over here. So yeah, looking forward
- 1:42to it until you melt your own faces off on stage, because that's going
- 1:48to be you might have to like just like do a week's worth of like
- 1:53saunas or something before you get over here. Just get your system jazzed up
- 1:57for it. Yeah, that's it. Look the thing is too. I'm
- 2:00in Victoria, so I'm going to Melbourne. Good things, And like fear
- 2:06warning, there is every chance that Melbourne could be freezing as well, regardless
- 2:10of the season, because I think I've ad perceptions of freezing are completely different
- 2:15now, probably, but Melbourne weather is rather unhinged, so you know,
- 2:20it is possible. Probably not, but good to know, though. It's
- 2:23good to know. Like we've got a lot of internal flights on this trip,
- 2:27so we can't actually bring a lot of stuff with us like usually we're
- 2:30just be on a toll boss and take a loads of shit, but it's
- 2:34like we can't actually do that, so we've got to be quite strategic about
- 2:38what we're packing. So it's good to know that there is a chance it
- 2:40might not be boiling and to prepare for that. To be honest, look
- 2:46at it probably will be, but it does happen from time to time.
- 2:50So we're also doing like Asia too, so like some parts of Southeast Asia,
- 2:53which is like northern Hemisphere, which is technically winter right like you know,
- 3:00So it's like kind of need to pack for both. I think that
- 3:02will be happening after you come here then, yeah, right after Yeah,
- 3:08we go to like like Bangkok, we did like Taiwan, Japan, like
- 3:14Tokyo and Japan. Yeah, a few places. That's hectic. So with
- 3:20a new album on the horizon, will we be lucky enough to hear anything
- 3:24unreleased perhaps at your headlining shows or are you sitting on that material until it's
- 3:30released. It's a bit of a tricky one because I believe that it sort
- 3:35of drops literally as we come out there. So I think we should we
- 3:38should kind of be prepared to be able to play some some of that new
- 3:43stuff, like at least a new single, but yeah, leave it with
- 3:46us. We've got we've got a bit of time to practice a couple of
- 3:51days here and there, so we'll see if we managed to get that.
- 3:53But you'll definitely be hearing the previous single no matter what. So, yeah,
- 3:58see you have given us of what's to come with self Hell, which
- 4:00is also the name of the album. So that what that came out back
- 4:05in September, is that right? Yeah? And so it's a pretty to
- 4:11me. It's a pretty clear indication that you've been tinkering with your sound,
- 4:15and the press release I received said some super exciting things like that you guys
- 4:19are drawing influence from bands like Aphex Twin and The Prodigy, which like that
- 4:26really excites me personally. So when you started working on this album, did
- 4:31you all make a conscious decision to sonically step in new territory or was that
- 4:39was it more of an organic evolution too, you know, to be honest,
- 4:46it was a little bit of both. I think. I think the
- 4:48previous records that we've put, how have some of it has moved into a
- 4:53bit of sort of a vintage since sound that our guitarist Sean has been working
- 4:58with like a vintage since for a few years now, so I think it
- 5:00feels it feels like a natural progression. But also we're trying to do something
- 5:05fresh for our fans that and we like to sort of keep our fan base
- 5:10on its toes in terms of knowing what to expect from a new record from
- 5:13us. We've said it many times, but like, we don't want to
- 5:15be a band that sort of finds our sound and just sits in it.
- 5:18We just want to always evolve and try new things and just try things that
- 5:24make us feel excited. So there is a bit of that I think that
- 5:27you know, no matter how much you try and say, we have got
- 5:30influences from other bands and stuff like, it's tricky because we always still manage
- 5:34to sound a lot like while She sleeps. So although there are influences peppered
- 5:39in from you know, us being younger and listening to different styles of music
- 5:43and now all the way to now, So there are those things peppered in,
- 5:47but I think it'll be you know, it might be in such a
- 5:51sleepsy way that you don't really click onto any of that straight away, if
- 5:55you get me, Yeah, definitely. It's more like an underlying sort of
- 5:58influence if you like, Yeah, for sure, and that's how you want
- 6:00it to be, right. You don't want to be just regurgitating something that's
- 6:04already been done. You want to make it your own. So yeah,
- 6:08that's it. I think I think we're really lucky the way that the way
- 6:10that the band plays together, our singing voices and Sean's lead play, and
- 6:14it's like, I think we could write country songs and still managed to sound
- 6:17like while she speaks, you know, I mean like it's just one of
- 6:19those things. So we are lucky. We never wanted to sort of sound
- 6:24like another band, and I think we managed to do that. So yeah,
- 6:27it's a good thing. I feel like that taking that as a bad
- 6:36thing, no, no, no, not not at all. But I
- 6:41feel like that that is an opinion that has come from someone that possibly doesn't
- 6:46listen to you guys in depth, because my husband said the same thing.
- 6:49He's like, oh, is this a new limb Biscuit song? He doesn't
- 6:53like limb Biscuit and he doesn't really listen to you that much. So when
- 6:57I said, oh no, it's oh okay, apparently that made it better
- 7:00that it wasn't Limp Biscuits. I think honestly, like this album is like
- 7:09we've always kind of like been diverse with with the sounds within like one particular
- 7:15album, but I think with this one we've kind of like we've like it's
- 7:19on steroids in that kind of respect, you know, like like there is
- 7:24no one song that really sounds like another, and so if like people think
- 7:29like, oh, it's like self hel is that what we're expecting with this
- 7:31album, It's like not really, Like that's kind of like a standalone song
- 7:34with how it sounds and like everything else, There's there's so many different sounds
- 7:41within this album, which which makes it probably the most exciting one that we've
- 7:44ever written. So yeah, keep we're keeping people on the toes, I
- 7:48think with this one. And how dynamic does that make a live show as
- 7:53well, Like the fact that you can pile all this all this stuff in
- 7:58and appeal to ranges of people and yeah, yeah exactly, I think that
- 8:03like that's always been the goal for us. We've always loved heavy music,
- 8:05but we've always loved like like the sing alongside of things as well, Like
- 8:09there's nothing better than your fans singing back to you. So we've always wanted
- 8:13to include everyone in that sense, like have something during our live show for
- 8:16everyone, whether it's just a stinky, heavy riff or some anthemic sounds for
- 8:22people to latch onto and sing back. I had a really interesting thought the
- 8:26other day. You know the term britpop, right, I mean it's yeah,
- 8:33So for me, this record is like Brit metal. It's like we've
- 8:39taken a lot of that britpop sort of elements from sort of the nineties and
- 8:43early two thousands and made our own sort of sound. But yeah, I
- 8:48think Brit metal is kind of a cool way to think about what it might
- 8:52sound like. Did you just create a new genre because metal doesn't have enough
- 8:58genres? Sorry we should Yeah, definitely definitely yeah, but whilst he sleeps
- 9:05create the first Brit Metal I like it. You heard it here first,
- 9:09everybody. And just to backtrack a little bit, I translated from what you
- 9:16said earlier that the next album is going to be a country album, so
- 9:20you'll get it. So next tour it'll be Hodowns. Yep, that's the
- 9:26way we're going. So to ask a serious question, then, when you
- 9:31are an established band like you guys are and you've got a long term following,
- 9:35and you explore new sounds like this, and you're on the cusp of
- 9:39releasing the record. Do you feel that you have to brace yourselves for fans
- 9:45that don't get it, or do you just simply not give a fucking you
- 9:48just as long as you guys are stoked with it. I wouldn't say it's
- 9:52not necessarily like not given a fuck, but I think we definitely knew when
- 9:56we were releasing self Hell that then might be some backlash from from certain people.
- 10:01But at the same time, it's like we we've always written music for
- 10:05ourselves, and we have been very fortunate and lucky enough to have a bunch
- 10:11of people come along for the ride and really enjoy it with us, you
- 10:13know. But yeah, like at the end of the day, you can't
- 10:18please everybody, and I think if we tried to please everybody that it would
- 10:22be an extremely diluted version of what Sleeps would be, and therefore we would
- 10:26never have created this legacy in the first place. So I think as long
- 10:28as we stick true to what we want to do, no matter what that
- 10:31is, it may come with backlash, but we it's gonna it's gonna come
- 10:37with whatever we do. So we writ the same album again, people would
- 10:41say, oh, it's the same album again. If we write something new,
- 10:45people are going to be like, oh, we prefer the old stuff.
- 10:46It's like, well, you can't win either way, so we might
- 10:48as well just do what you want. I think that when we first sort
- 10:50of got picked up, when we're younger and stuff, you do feel like
- 10:54you have you know, you have to you have to appease those fan base
- 10:58because you're new to it, do you know what I mean? You don't
- 11:00want it to blow up sort of thing in your face and not continue the
- 11:05journey. So I think naturally, when you're when you're when we oh goodbye.
- 11:11And that's where we lost Laws for a bit when he dropped out of
- 11:15the call. But don't worry, he comes back. This is a regular
- 11:18occurrence for Laws and technology. Yeah. I was aiming my next question at
- 11:24him too, because I you know, had lyric questions or do you guys
- 11:28all write lyrics? Well, we all write lyrics. Yeah. Yeah,
- 11:33that was just me being like assuming when I should not be assuming. No,
- 11:37that's all good, maybe, Yeah, I mean I could probably speak
- 11:39for him anyway at this point, like, Yeah, we're definitely like we
- 11:45we're very deep in the process together, you know. So it's like i'd
- 11:48probably and me and laws have definitely we've worked together like a lot, like
- 11:52personally, like on the like last few records, just creating lyrics to like
- 11:58together, they're like finding like what parts like his lyrics could go into and
- 12:03creating patterns for them. So I probably could, Well, what's your question.
- 12:09Well, I basically, with regard to the themes of the album,
- 12:13I quite liked the statement that was included in the press release from Sean,
- 12:18which it was lengthy, so I'm not going to quote it all now,
- 12:20but for the sake of the listeners, I might edit it in later.
- 12:24But basically, like the gist of it being that we are all experiencing suffering
- 12:28in some way, and while that creates differences, it also binds us.
- 12:31So I just kind of was going to ask if you guys could expand on
- 12:35that a little bit. Yeah, I mean, like, I think we've
- 12:39been very fortunate, you know, with the band to be able to kind
- 12:46of like remove ourselves from the orthodox way of like the way society operates.
- 12:52I guess, you know, like we're being able to almost have like a
- 12:56zoomed out like view and perspective of the world, because like when you're traveling
- 13:00in a band with your friends, you kind of like in your own little
- 13:03bubble and you get to go to all these different places and experience different cultures
- 13:09and and and you know, I genuinely believe that travel broadens the mind,
- 13:13you know, and and you you you're able to get like this very unique
- 13:18perspective on the world. And I don't believe I would have had like the
- 13:22same spiritual and kind of like mental growth, like none of us. I
- 13:26believe we wouldn't have had the same like spiritual mental growth without the band and
- 13:31being able to travel to all these places and really like being a really privileged
- 13:35position to kind of like experience all that. And you know, like we've
- 13:41always kind of tried to go against the grain and kind of you know,
- 13:45come at things from like a different perspective of like the mainstream, you know.
- 13:50And I think, you know, like when when when you look at
- 13:54like this is the six and brainwashed. Brainwash was like a very like politically
- 14:00charge like pissed off album, you know, and really wanting to delve into
- 14:03those topics of like why is the world the way it is? And you
- 14:07know, corrupt leaders and all this kind of stuff and then after like brainwashed
- 14:11and you know, us being on this journey for a while. I think
- 14:15it's like round about the U. R WE era where we start kind of
- 14:18pointing the finger inwards a little bit and we were like, Okay, what
- 14:22are we doing that impacts the world? And you know, because it's it's
- 14:26people changing on like an individual level that you know that changes the world from
- 14:33there on, right, Like you have to start with yourself. So like
- 14:39as uncomfortable as that is, Yeah, as uncomfortable as that is. Yeah,
- 14:41Like so I think like we're always kind of trying to be introspective and
- 14:46and just like peel back the layers and trying to like really like discover who
- 14:52we are and as individual people. And I think that's very important for everybody
- 14:56else to do as well. So like that's kind of like that's kind of
- 15:01like always been the topic. Yeah, just like discovering ourselves really like kind
- 15:05of like exposing ourselves in the raw. It's in its raw. It's form
- 15:09to try and yeah, to try and like convey that message of discover who
- 15:15you are, make yourself a better person that positively influences the world, and
- 15:20in that message, you know, if that could be spread then then great.
- 15:24You got me back. Guys, what happened my iPad died? Oh
- 15:33sorry, No, that's okay. We we were just going over the lyrical
- 15:37themes of the new record. Yeah, with some good things festival. Is
- 15:43there any bands on the bill that you're excited to be to be sharing a
- 15:48line up with? Yeah, for sure. I remember looking at the lineup
- 15:52and being like, this is great. I mean, obviously we're trying to
- 15:54rip off Limp biscuits sounds, so it'd be good to see those. Let's
- 15:58get read Durst in the guest spart Hell yeah, I can't remember the lineup
- 16:04just off the top of my head. Do you have it there? It's
- 16:07pretty diverse. We will Devot Devo's there, fall Out Boy headlining, taking
- 16:15Back Sunday. I fucking love those. Oh yes, oh I Prevail band.
- 16:22It's pretty decent, isn't it. Really? It's a it's a good
- 16:25solid lineup. Do you guys get many opportunities to watch other bands, like
- 16:29from side of stage or whatever, or do you find festivals are a bit
- 16:33hectic and there's a lot of prep and and that sort of thing. I
- 16:37think it's sort of a bit of both. Again, with that, I
- 16:40think if we get a bit of time, it depends when the next sort
- 16:44of show is as well. So if the drive to the next show is
- 16:48not crazy, then we can hang around for a while and watch some things.
- 16:51But then if we've got to get off and get to you know,
- 16:52get to a sound check, or we've got all the things to do at
- 16:56the festival, then we might have to bail. But yeah, I think
- 16:59nine times out of ten, if there's bands we want to see, we
- 17:00make sure we stick around. So I think I think for this all being
- 17:03well, depending on what the flight time is to the next festival, I
- 17:07think will definitely be around and out in the crowd and having a chill and
- 17:11watching some bands. So, like I say, especially because the weather's really
- 17:15cold here, it'll be nice to just chill out and watch some watch some
- 17:18live music. So we always try to enjoy some sunshine. Now we're probably
- 17:25coming up to my cutoff time, so I do in most interviews I try
- 17:30to include like a silly or lighthearted question. This one, though, however,
- 17:36is not of my construction. This afternoon, the guitarist in my band
- 17:40requested that I ask a question, and it's stupid, so be prepared.
- 17:47Who is she and what are you lot up to while she sleeps? So
- 17:53you want to know the story behind the name? Yeah, well yeah,
- 17:57yeah, Well you can tell the story behind the name, or you can
- 18:00just make up something really dumb. It's okay with me either way. Oh
- 18:03I'm not going to make up something really dumb because the names on the edge
- 18:07anyway. Yeah, but basically the lads were all sort of chilling having a
- 18:12drink when they well does it. Every good story starts off that way.
- 18:22Come on. At this point the band would call I think it was Final
- 18:32Ruin. Is that right? I wasn't in it, but yeah, I
- 18:36was in another band called tact. I'm going to plug my old band Tack.
- 18:40I think it was either Final Ruin or dead for So they were sat
- 18:44around the table and they wanted a new name, and there was a chat
- 18:47like a you know these crappy sort of chat magazines that basically like make up
- 18:52loads of crap just to get people to buy it. Anyway, the story
- 18:55about a woman that had found out that her husband had been cheating on her,
- 19:02so she like put his dick off, yep, so in his sleep,
- 19:07so that was while he slept on the thing, and headline was like
- 19:11while he was sleeping through that she d so. But at the time,
- 19:21everyone was trying to be like this was like years and years ago, and
- 19:23obviously everyone was trying to be really death metal, and it was always about
- 19:27having a name that he couldn't really see like properly for looking at it,
- 19:30and everyone was trying to be really disgusting. So they just thought it was
- 19:33a cool flip on that headline in the magazine and just wept with while she
- 19:37sleeps. But like it's kind of like it's kind of like on the same
- 19:41wavelength as like the Asale dyings and the storys and whatever. So we were
- 19:45like, while she sleeps, that sounds cool. Yeah, it does sound
- 19:49cool, and it's it's much better than the other two names that you just
- 19:52told me, which I've already forgotten, so alrighty well, that wraps things
- 19:59up for us. Then I can't wait to see you guys are good things,
- 20:02and like I said, I'm going to try and get along to the
- 20:03side show as well. So fingers crossed awesome. Yeah, and just as
- 20:07an aside, I missed my husband's birthday dinner to interview you guys tonight,
- 20:12So thank you, thank you for being a really good interview. I hope
- 20:21your husband does a great day, and I hope we get to get out
- 20:23there and catch up with them. Yeah, hopefully bump into a good things.
- 20:26Let's praise love inside of us while she Sleeps will be playing the first
- 20:36of their Aussie shows at Stay Gold in Melbourne on Thursday, November thirtieth,
- 20:41before they do the Melbourne Good Things the following day. Sydney and Brisbane Good
- 20:45Things are on the Saturday and Sunday the second and third of December, and
- 20:49then they follow that up by headlining at The bright Side in Brisbane on Tuesday,
- 20:55December fifth. And because I said in the interview that I would edit
- 21:00it in. This was the statement that guitarist Sean made regarding their new album,
- 21:04which of course is titled Self Hell and is being released on March fifteen.
- 21:11The name of the album is the foundation of how we view ourselves and
- 21:14the world. Everyone has a subjective experience like no other, yet the constant
- 21:18that finds us is the differences between us and the fact that we are all
- 21:22suffering in our own way. Don't be too quick to judge and demonize.
- 21:26Your time will come for redemption or damnification. We've been drawing inspiration from an
- 21:32array of misfit artists far from where you would usually pigeonhole while She Sleeps.
- 21:37Each member has brought in a different perspective of inspiration so far apart in genre
- 21:41that it has left us with a very odd and satisfying sonic. While She
- 21:45Sleeps will continue to keep the world guessing on what we will do next.
- 21:48Not only for the fans, but this is a spiritual venture that we will
- 21:52have to keep alive, moving, and constantly in flux. We do this
- 21:56by scaring ourselves with things that we are not supposed to do every single day.
- 22:03I really liked that, so I really wanted to include that in thanks
- 22:07for listening to the Heavy podcast. I'm as remember to keep life heavy and
- 22:11we will catch you next time. I know when it's good, It's so
- 22:15good. When it's I'll give you something and I will help you manage your
- 22:22mind down my outcre be fly f
