- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour. Two members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
- 0:09Speaker 2: have received national recognition for their work on a historic
- 0:13Speaker 2: sexual violence case. Here's VOCM's Sarah Strickland.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Constables Nadia Churchill and Tara Malloy were recognized with the
- 0:21Speaker 3: Canadian Police Association's Award of Excellence for their work during
- 0:25Speaker 3: the complex and extensive investigation into former teacher and volleyball
- 0:29Speaker 3: coach Marcus Hicks. The investigation into Hicks began in the
- 0:33Speaker 3: summer of 2023 at a home on Trails End Drive
- 0:36Speaker 3: in Paradise. The investigation revealed that the man had been
- 0:40Speaker 3: using numerous online aliases to coerce and sexually abuse dozens
- 0:45Speaker 3: of victims, many of whom were underage. The investigation required
- 0:49Speaker 3: officers to review an extensive amount of evidence, including tens
- 0:53Speaker 3: of thousands of images and videos dating back more than
- 0:56Speaker 3: 15 years. The investigation resulted in more than 150 criminal
- 1:00Speaker 3: charges laid. Hicks, who was convicted in August 2025, is
- 1:06Speaker 3: currently serving 18 and a half years in jail. The
- 1:09Speaker 3: officers received the award of excellence during the Canadian Police
- 1:12Speaker 3: Association's biennial conference in Victoria, B.C. on Thursday. Sarah Strickland, VOCM,
- 1:19Speaker 3: Local News Now.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Stats Canada says the economy lost 42,000 jobs in August,
- 1:26Speaker 2: falling short of economists' expectations for a modest gain. Unemployment
- 1:31Speaker 2: rate is unchanged, 6.4%. The drop in employment stops short,
- 1:36Speaker 2: a strong run for the labor market, which added 181,000
- 1:39Speaker 2: jobs from April through July. There were 20,000 fewer people
- 1:44Speaker 2: working in the public sector last month, marking the third
- 1:47Speaker 2: straight month of declines. The unemployment rate in Newfoundland and
- 1:51Speaker 2: Labrador dropped significantly. It was 8.6% in August, that's down
- 1:55Speaker 2: from 9.3% in July. Students entering Memorial University who are
- 2:03Speaker 2: struggling with math despite graduating from the K-12 system will
- 2:07Speaker 2: be offered some extra help thanks to funding being provided
- 2:10Speaker 2: through the Hibernia Project. MUN President Dr. Janet Morrison says
- 2:15Speaker 2: it's a trend that's been recognized at the university for
- 2:18Speaker 2: some time and providing additional support in math can help
- 2:22Speaker 2: improve student numeracy skills and ensure that the subject is
- 2:26Speaker 2: seen as a pathway to success.
- 2:28Speaker 1: For many students, first-year math can be a barrier, not
- 2:32Speaker 1: just to completing their degree, but it undermines their confidence.
- 2:37Speaker 1: and it can be kind of disruptive to moving through
- 2:40Speaker 1: their program requirements. And so, you know, that in fact
- 2:45Speaker 1: impacts about 25% of Memorial students who tend to, over
- 2:50Speaker 1: the period of the last few years, have tended to
- 2:52Speaker 1: retake first-year math.
- 2:55Speaker 2: She says the Hibernia project has provided the university with $ 1. 9
- 2:59Speaker 2: million for a three-year pilot. 1,200 students this fall will
- 3:04Speaker 2: have access to small group tutorials. That's your news. I'm
- 3:08Speaker 2: Brian Medour.
