- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy, and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, I think I mentioned this
- 0:25maybe on Friday that High Stakes was going viral for their
- 0:28episode of The Grill last week. I think the last time I spoke to
- 0:31you guys about this, they were at 100,000 listens for that
- 0:33episode. Well, now they're at 1.5
- 0:36million. They went so viral on Spotify,
- 0:39we don't really know what's happening.
- 0:41But thank you to the Spotify universe, thank you to the
- 0:45Spotify gods for giving us this blessing.
- 0:48They're also charting everywhere.
- 0:49They're #16 in Australia, they're number 19 in USA, 21 in
- 0:53Canada, 33 in UK. Like it is just popping off.
- 1:00So very exciting. A great way to start our Monday.
- 1:04All right before I get into the stories for today, Please
- 1:06remember to rate, review and subscribe, please Spotify star
- 1:09rate US. We're trying to get to 1000
- 1:11Spotify star ratings on infinite scroll by the end of the year.
- 1:14All right the first story that I have for you guys is Shay
- 1:17Mitchell is under fire after she launched a skin care line called
- 1:22Rini, which is tailored to toddlers and children.
- 1:26So according to the brand's website, Rini's quote mission is
- 1:29simple to nurture healthy habits, spark confidence and
- 1:32make thoughtfully crafted really care essentials and play
- 1:35products accessible to every family.
- 1:38That sounds harmless enough, honestly.
- 1:40However, what people have an issue with is the products that
- 1:43they chose to launch with. And they feel like that is
- 1:46really telling with like what Shay and her partners want to do
- 1:49with the brand. Because the brand launched with
- 1:51a hydro gel facial mask, an after sun facial mask, and an
- 1:56everyday sheet mask. Like literally sheet masks on
- 2:00toddlers. And they feature cute little
- 2:02animals like a puppy, a Unicorn, a panda.
- 2:05So this is what Shay Mitchell wrote.
- 2:06I can't say Shay like to me, she's Shay Mitchell.
- 2:09She's like a a full name kind of celebrity.
- 2:12So this is what she wrote on Instagram.
- 2:14So excited and honestly so relieved that I can finally talk
- 2:17about Renee. This has been three years in the
- 2:19making, inspired by my girls, their curiosity and all the
- 2:23little moments that made me realize how early it starts from
- 2:26birthday parties and face paint to wanting to quote, do what
- 2:29mommy does with her face masks. It was only a matter of time.
- 2:32Renee isn't about beauty, it's about self-care.
- 2:34About teaching our kids that taking care of themselves can be
- 2:37fun, gentle, and safe. Kids are naturally curious and
- 2:39instead of ignoring that, we can embrace it with safe, gentle
- 2:43products parents can trust and sweet moments that bring us
- 2:46closer. And she also talked about how
- 2:49these products are made with clean ingredients, quote UN
- 2:52quote clean. And if you guys are in the
- 2:53beauty space or have kept up with that at all over the last
- 2:56few years, you know that the rhetoric around clean beauty is
- 3:00absolutely a pipeline to the alt right.
- 3:03So people also have a big issue with how she's positioning this.
- 3:06So yes, there's tons of backlash across the Internet, and many
- 3:10dermatologists are jumping in on this as well, saying it's super
- 3:12toxic to be promoting skin care to children.
- 3:16Others are defending the lion, saying it is a cute idea because
- 3:19as she kind of noted in her Instagram story, kids always
- 3:22want to, like, do what they see their mommy doing.
- 3:25They want to do their skin care and their makeup like mommy.
- 3:27They want to do it at the same time as her.
- 3:29So now they can kind of have their own products to do their
- 3:32skin care with mommy. Am I surprised that Shay
- 3:34Mitchell launched like a toddler face mask and is touting clean
- 3:39ingredients and this kind of rhetoric?
- 3:41Like I honestly think not really.
- 3:43I feel like it's really kitschy more than anything.
- 3:48I really feel like they sat down and they were like, OK, what
- 3:51industry is not disrupted? Like what can we do that will
- 3:54make a huge buzz and everyone will be like, Oh my God, that's
- 3:57a genius. Like I really feel like the
- 3:59inspiration behind this was like, what can we do that's
- 4:02different to make something different for different sake?
- 4:05But I think in general around the backlash, the messaging is
- 4:08the biggest issue because I understand like parents put
- 4:11moisturizer on their kids. Like there's has been kids
- 4:14makeup that's like play makeup for decades.
- 4:18Like that stuff has existed. So I feel like they could have
- 4:21positioned this that way. And like she kind of touched on
- 4:25that in her Instagram story. But the marketing around the
- 4:27brand and the visual representation that they're
- 4:29putting out into the world really does not convey that.
- 4:32It really feels like they're trying to put out something
- 4:33that's a little bit more elevated and like serious as
- 4:36opposed to kids play. And it feels to me almost like
- 4:40they're putting out a kids brand that they believe in the future
- 4:43future could be a grown up brand.
- 4:46I feel like they're not trying to put all their eggs in the
- 4:47kids basket. They're hoping that this can
- 4:50grow into an adult brand. Like they launched it with the
- 4:53idea of this turning into like a tween, a teen, a young adult
- 4:56brand eventually. So they don't want to put out
- 4:59like these kind of like kid like play face masks because they
- 5:02don't want to pigeonhole themselves.
- 5:04That's how I see this at least. I'm interested to hear what you
- 5:07guys think about this. I feel like it gives kind of
- 5:10desperate, which actually leads into my next door very, very
- 5:14nicely because Ned Fulmer is addressing backlash around his
- 5:19controversial comeback to the Internet.
- 5:21And this is also giving desperate.
- 5:24So Ned Fulmer has made a video addressing the backlash that he
- 5:27received after basically relaunching his career with his
- 5:31new podcast and his new YouTube channel.
- 5:34So for a recap, Ned was part of the Try Guys, which was a very
- 5:36popular YouTube collective who started at BuzzFeed.
- 5:39And then they went out on their own and kind of like their main
- 5:42shtick for a while was that they made these comedic videos trying
- 5:45different things. So this all blew up in Ned's
- 5:48face in 2022 when it was revealed that he had been
- 5:51cheating on his wife Ariel, who was also in a lot of his
- 5:54content. So the fans knew her and he was
- 5:56cheating on her with a Try Guys employee.
- 5:59Ned was quickly fired from the Try Guys and retreated from the
- 6:02Internet, and then he returned in September of this year with a
- 6:06new podcast called Rock Bottom, where he interviews people who
- 6:10have hit rock bottom. That was already a controversial
- 6:13decision. However, his first interview was
- 6:16with Ariel, and that became even more of a scandal because people
- 6:20felt like the way he spoke about what he did to her, he was very
- 6:24cold. He was kind of dismissive of her
- 6:26feelings. They did not like how he acted.
- 6:28In this interview, people also criticized him for having Ariel
- 6:31as his first guest because he was kind of monetizing her pain
- 6:35to get views upon his return. That's how people felt.
- 6:38Now shortly after launching the podcast, he announced that he is
- 6:41starting a new YouTube channel with this series about Curious
- 6:44curiosity where he tests new things and he's calling it
- 6:48building a more curious world. And everyone was like, OK, this
- 6:52is literally just the try guys. So now, after essentially 2
- 6:57months of a consistent backlash and just people not being down
- 7:01for his return, he has made a video addressing everybody's
- 7:06concerns. Launching the podcast with a
- 7:09conversation with Ariel was Ariel's idea.
- 7:12She's a stakeholder in the Rock Bottom podcast and this new
- 7:16channel and she wants it to be successful.
- 7:21So that was part of the reason why, in terms of having that
- 7:26conversation, we did it together rather than on any other
- 7:29platform. After discovery, I started an
- 7:33intensive program of therapy, group therapy, and work to
- 7:38really try to understand what I had done, why I had done it, and
- 7:43what it meant for my relationship and my life.
- 7:49This involved a lot of facing rationalizations, denials,
- 7:56minimizations, all of these mental clouds that help you
- 8:02continue behavior that you know is hurtful and you still do it
- 8:08anyways. So it let me face the truth and
- 8:12acknowledge in no uncertain terms that I cheated on my wife
- 8:19with an employee of my business and it caused her immense pain
- 8:24and shattered our marriage and also caused a lot of pain to a
- 8:29lot of other people. Those were my selfish actions
- 8:35and my choices. So this was a long process that
- 8:39took, you know, approximately 2 years and continues work even to
- 8:46this day at the three-year mark, even though we decided to
- 8:50separate officially two years in.
- 8:53And if you were wondering what the show is about, I encourage
- 8:58you to check it out. And so that will be on the Rock
- 9:02Bottom channel and on this channel, it'll be more
- 9:05entertainment forward still on under the values of curiosity
- 9:11and empathy. I know people are saying that
- 9:15it's similar to some of the stuff I did before with BuzzFeed
- 9:18and try guys. And that's true.
- 9:21It's the DNA of stuff that I love making, mixing education
- 9:27with entertainment and developing new show concepts
- 9:32that I'm really excited. But it's it's not going to be
- 9:35too drastically different than the type of work I did before,
- 9:40because that's just who I am and the type of stuff that I like to
- 9:45make. However, he actually didn't
- 9:47please everyone. A lot of people feel like what
- 9:49he is missing from this video, this address, is that he should
- 9:53be apologizing and directly acknowledging the Try guys and
- 9:57what he did to them very publicly, given his actions
- 10:01could have cost them their careers.
- 10:02And I mean, I'm sure it cost them a lot in general, right?
- 10:05Like, it would have cost them tons of money, tons of anguish,
- 10:08like they had to completely change their business.
- 10:10So yeah, a lot of people feel like that is something that has
- 10:13been noticeably missing so far. But honestly, maybe in his exit,
- 10:16he's like, not allowed to talk about them publicly.
- 10:18I was actually thinking that could be the reason why he
- 10:21hasn't really touched on it in the in depth way that his
- 10:25audience or I don't even know if they're his audience anymore,
- 10:28but like people online are asking him to.
- 10:30OK. And the last word that I have
- 10:31for you guys is Mr. Beast is launching a theme park in Saudi
- 10:37Arabia called Beastland next week.
- 10:40So over the weekend, Mr. Beast tweeted this or I guess posted
- 10:43on XI will never say XI feel like it will be Twitter and
- 10:47tweeting to me forever. He wrote.
- 10:49Next week, Beastland, our brand new theme park, opens.
- 10:52We built custom games modeled after our videos that don't
- 10:56exist anywhere else, and we'll have the world's largest prize.
- 11:00While he's obsessed with prizes, he said I don't want this to be
- 11:05like a typical theme park. Thought of things from first
- 11:07principles and created games. I would love to play tons of
- 11:10original games created. Plus of course we have roller
- 11:13coasters and rides. So general entry for a ticket
- 11:16will be about $7.00, but this actually doesn't include access
- 11:20to actually play the games. Higher price tickets cost about
- 11:23$66, which I think, I don't know, I haven't gone to a theme
- 11:27park in a really long time, but I feel like that's kind of in
- 11:29line with theme park pricing now.
- 11:31When asked why he specifically chose Saudi Arabia to launch
- 11:34this, he said it's in the middle of the world and that a majority
- 11:37of my audience is outside of America.
- 11:39And when we have a big Middle Eastern fan base, he wanted to
- 11:42give them a chance to participate.
- 11:44And I thought this was really funny.
- 11:45I was getting some of this information from Gizmodo, the
- 11:48tech publication, and they wrote the world is a globe.
- 11:50So it's unclear what he meant by calling Saudi Arabia, quote, the
- 11:54middle of the world. OK, so I actually do think a Mr.
- 11:58Beast theme park based on his videos is a good idea.
- 12:01I like genuinely think it's a good idea.
- 12:04I fear his ambiguity around like why he chose the specific region
- 12:09and what fans can expect is unfortunately just another
- 12:12example of Mr. Beast being obsessed with infamy and wealth.
- 12:14Oh also this is not a permanent thing.
- 12:16This is not a permanent thing. This is only going on for a
- 12:18couple of months. Also a fun fact about me, I
- 12:21don't know if you guys are on this side of TikTok but I get
- 12:23served this content constantly now and I don't know if it's
- 12:27like specifically popping off or for some reason it's like on my
- 12:30for you page all the time but I am constantly getting basically
- 12:35like the Real Housewives of neon talk like that's what I'm on.
- 12:38I have no idea how or why, but these past few weeks my For You
- 12:42page has just been flooded with vlogs of the young wives who are
- 12:47raising kids on basically the construction site compounds for
- 12:51a NEOM. And if you don't know what NEOM
- 12:53is, it's this like mega project in Saudi Arabia where they're
- 12:56trying to build a futuristic city.
- 12:58And then of course, that got me looking into it.
- 13:00And there's tons of videos on YouTube already talking about
- 13:03how it's like never going to get built and people don't believe
- 13:05this is ever coming to fruition. And I'm going to say from the
- 13:07vlogs that I'm watching, it seems that that is probably also
- 13:10the case. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 13:12Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 13:14I love you guys. I already have stories for
- 13:16tomorrow. I really had to pick and choose.
- 13:18And since it's Monday and I went away for the weekend, I was
- 13:20like, I'm going to pick stories that aren't that, you know, high
- 13:23effort. But I have some really good
- 13:24stories for you guys tomorrow. So I will talk to you guys
- 13:27tomorrow. Please write, review and
- 13:28subscribe. I love you and yeah, I'll talk
- 13:30to you tomorrow. Bye.
