- 0:00Hey y'all, happy Friday. This is friendly.
- 0:04Thanks for joining me on yet another episode on In the
- 0:07Stillness. I'm super excited for today's
- 0:10episode because this part of First John carries both so much
- 0:15conviction with reassurance, and I think it is such a good
- 0:20reminder for all of us to hear. So as we're continuing, what I
- 0:24love about John's writing is the tone that he writes in.
- 0:29You can tell that he's not just writing as a teacher, but as a
- 0:34father. And at this point, John is
- 0:37older, he has walked with Jesus physically, and he has lived
- 0:41most of his life in full time ministry.
- 0:44So he is writing to believers that he deeply loves and cares
- 0:49about, almost like spiritual children.
- 0:52And as I was reading this, it kind of reminded me of how Paul
- 0:56talks to believers being his joy and his crown as we see in
- 1:01Philippians 4 verse one. There's such a deep desire for
- 1:06these spiritual fathers like John and Paul to see people not
- 1:11just believe, but to truly grow up in their faith.
- 1:15So having said that, let's go ahead and read today's passage.
- 1:19We're just going to be in 2 verses, so it's going to be
- 1:21short and sweet, but it is super powerful.
- 1:25Starting in chapter 2 verses one through 2.
- 1:29My dear children, I write these things to you so that you won't
- 1:33sin. But if anyone does sin, we
- 1:37continually have a forgiving Redeemer who is face to face
- 1:42with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous. 1 He is the
- 1:47atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also
- 1:52for the sins of the whole world. OK, right from the get go John
- 1:59says. My dear children, again, that
- 2:03fatherly tone that I was talking about, what he's about to say
- 2:08matters so deeply to him. He says, I write these things to
- 2:13you so that you won't sin. That is the goal.
- 2:18And I think this ties perfectly into what we were addressing
- 2:22yesterday, talking about confession, because confession
- 2:27is not meant to be an excuse to just stay the same.
- 2:31We're not called to live in a continuous cycle of sin and then
- 2:36confess and then repeat and then do it again.
- 2:39There's actually a deeper calling to maturity.
- 2:44Just like in the natural, there are different expectations for a
- 2:485 year old versus say, a 15 year old.
- 2:52In the same way, spiritually, we are to grow.
- 2:56We're not to stay stuck in the same immature patterns.
- 3:01Paul speaks to this in Colossians 1 verses 10 through
- 3:0511, and he prays that the church would grow in the knowledge of
- 3:09God being strengthened and increasing in spiritual wisdom.
- 3:15And then we also see in Second Timothy 2 verse 22 that we are
- 3:19to flee the evil desires of youth and to pursue
- 3:23righteousness, faith, love and peace along with others who are
- 3:28calling on the Lord out of a pure heart.
- 3:31So that is talking about fleeing those immature flesh driven
- 3:37patterns. So the question I think then
- 3:40becomes, am I growing or am I staying the same?
- 3:46Because truly pursuing Jesus, it's not about maintaining A
- 3:52baseline, it's about committing to becoming more like Jesus
- 3:56every single day. And I believe something that can
- 4:01subtly creep in is this mindset of, well, I know that God is
- 4:07going to forgive me, which is true, but it can be misused.
- 4:13And Paul actually talks directly to this in Romans 6 verses one
- 4:18through 2. He says, should we continue in
- 4:21sin so that grace may abound? Absolutely not, because God's
- 4:28grace is not to be taken advantage of in an impure way.
- 4:34Grace is not permission, it's actually transformation.
- 4:38There is power connected to that grace, and we're not made to
- 4:42live in bondage to sin. Romans 6 verse 23 tells us that
- 4:47sin leads directly to death, but that is not our inheritance as
- 4:53children of God. Instead we are called children
- 4:57of light. And if God our Father is light
- 5:02as John keeps emphasizing, then we are called to reflect that.
- 5:07And Leviticus 11 verse 44 says be holy because I am holy.
- 5:13And this is echoed again in first Peter one verse 16.
- 5:17So we have an Old Testament reference and we have a New
- 5:20Testament reference. So instead of asking what can I
- 5:25get away with or how close to the line can I get, we need to
- 5:31start asking ourselves, how can I best reflect my Father?
- 5:36How can I be as holy as I possibly can?
- 5:40And then John shifts in these two verses because this is where
- 5:45the reassurance comes in, he says.
- 5:48But if anyone does sin, not if you're perfect, but when you
- 5:55fall, he reminds us that we have an advocate, Jesus Christ the
- 6:02righteous 1, the anointed 1. And this is so significant
- 6:07because our enemy, Satan, he's referred to as the accuser,
- 6:13meaning that he loves to bring those accusations in your
- 6:16thoughts, in your mind. He wants to just surround you
- 6:21with guilt and shame to make you feel like your case is still
- 6:25open. He is trying to put that death
- 6:29penalty on you. But John is saying, uh, uh, your
- 6:34case has already been handled. It's already been taken care of
- 6:38by Jesus. Because think about it, The
- 6:41judge who sits on the throne, the judge's son, Jesus Christ,
- 6:47is your advocate. He's not just near the Father.
- 6:50He is face to face with the Father and He is speaking on
- 6:55your behalf. He is interceding for you.
- 6:59Romans 8 verse 33 through 34 says who can bring a charge
- 7:04against God's elect? Christ Jesus is the one who died
- 7:09and He is interceding for us. Hebrews 7 verse 25 says that He
- 7:15lives to intercede for us. So when the enemy tries to
- 7:19accuse you, I encourage you to remember Jesus already paid for
- 7:26that. The penalty is paid, the wrath
- 7:30of God is satisfied, the case is adjourned.
- 7:35You are not on trial anymore for that sin.
- 7:39We are called to confess it, but to repent and turn from it, not
- 7:44to live in condemnation. And I love this picture that
- 7:48John gives us. You're as safe as Jesus is
- 7:54because if you are in Jesus Christ, if you're a born again
- 7:59believer, you are united with him.
- 8:02So he is your defender. One of my favorite songs is
- 8:07Defender by Abby Gambo and Upper Room.
- 8:09So if you haven't listened to it after this pod, go listen.
- 8:13But he defends you, He is your righteousness, He is your
- 8:18covering. Which means we don't just
- 8:21receive forgiveness, we are also cleansed, purified, we are
- 8:27forgiven and we are made new. So a question to reflect on is,
- 8:33am I still sitting in the seat of judgement over myself, or am
- 8:38I actually living in the freedom that Christ paid for?
- 8:43Because freedom from sin also translates into freedom to
- 8:48follow him fully and without shame.
- 8:53John expands on it even more, saying that Jesus is not just
- 8:57the atoning sacrifice for our sins, but for the sins of the
- 9:01whole world. And as I sat with that, it was
- 9:06kind of overwhelming because if you think about how hard it's
- 9:11been to maybe forgive one person who has hurt you, and to think
- 9:16that Jesus took on everything, even forgiving the very people
- 9:21who put him on that cross, who made him endure the worst
- 9:26torture possible, when you begin to grasp even a glimpse of that
- 9:31kind of forgiveness, it changes you.
- 9:35You cannot receive that and not be moved to give it, not just to
- 9:40people close to you, but even to strangers, to people who can't
- 9:44give you anything in return. That's the love of the Father
- 9:49freely flowing through you. So to wrap up, I want to address
- 9:56how we see Jesus in this passage.
- 9:59We see Him as our forgiving Redeemer, our Advocate and our
- 10:04intercessor, our righteousness and the atoning sacrifice, the
- 10:11One who made a way for us to be fully restored.
- 10:15He paid our amends. Guys, He has completely covered
- 10:20the cost of sin, and we are no longer defined by it.
- 10:25So let's closeout in prayer. Jesus, thank you for your
- 10:32sacrifice, for your body that was broken for us, for your
- 10:37blood that streamed so freely. And you did not just call us out
- 10:44of sin. You made a way for us to live
- 10:48free from sin. We praise You for being our
- 10:53advocate, for standing in our place, and for fully paying the
- 10:58price that we could never even pay.
- 11:03Would you help us to not take Your grace lightly, to not take
- 11:07advantage of it in an impure way, but to walk in true
- 11:11repentance and to pursue holiness as Your dear children?
- 11:18Would you grow us in spiritual maturity, increase our spiritual
- 11:22wisdom and understanding, and Father, make us to look more
- 11:27like Your Son? We want our lives to depict Your
- 11:33light and Your love and Your truth.
- 11:37Would you make us more and more holy just as you have called us
- 11:41to be holy as you are? May everyone around us see the
- 11:46light of Christ in US. Jesus, we pray this in your
- 11:49name, God. Amen.
- 11:52OK y'all. Well, that is today's episode.
- 11:55Praying for you guys as you continue your Friday or whenever
- 11:59you're listening to this and that.
- 12:01Y'all have a wonderful weekend and that you feel the Lord's
- 12:03presence every single moment. I'll see y'all in the next
- 12:06episode.
