- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith.
- 0:03And so we are going to talk about a subject that we both love, which is what do you?
- 0:12And so we are just coming out of our season in basketball and this year was such a special
- 0:18opportunity for us.
- 0:20It was my first chance to coach her in basketball.
- 0:25So basketball is more than just a game.
- 0:27It's an opportunity to live out and share the gospel.
- 0:30In this episode, we want to explore how coaching and playing a Christ like attitude can inspire
- 0:35youth and teach them about faith, discipline and character.
- 0:39Whether you're on the bench or on the court, let's talk about showing Christ in every way.
- 0:45And so some of those opportunities that we got to show Christ, what was one thing that
- 0:51you guys decided to do as a team this year?
- 0:54At the beginning of every game, um, pray with other team.
- 1:01And so can you explain how that looked?
- 1:03That two minutes like when we're warming up, we would just go in the middle and pray.
- 1:09And so as a team, they wanted to start a new tradition is that to go and pray with the
- 1:14other team.
- 1:15And so I would go talk to the coach whenever we were warming up to see if they would want
- 1:22to pray with us.
- 1:23And so we invited the, um, the opposing team and the officials, uh, to gather at the center
- 1:30court and we would start every game with prayer.
- 1:34Um, and so we just felt like it was really important.
- 1:36Uh, Gia does get to go to New Horizons Christian school and we were able to, um, show God into
- 1:47the public schools.
- 1:49And it was just a nice time to reflect, um, Christ like, uh, you know, attitude.
- 1:58And so what are some things that you learned on the basketball court?
- 2:08Um, I'll just be nice to everyone as far as do you feel like, um, what did we, what was
- 2:21our, um, verse of the year?
- 2:24I say, uh, 40 31.
- 2:31Can you speak up?
- 2:32I don't think that people could probably hear you.
- 2:34I say 40 31.
- 2:36Okay.
- 2:37But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
- 2:44They will soar on wings like eagles.
- 2:47They will let and not grow weary.
- 2:49They will walk and not be faint.
- 2:52And so that was the, um, verse that we picked for the year because I love to run.
- 2:59And so whenever we did conditioning the summer, um, the girls ran a lot.
- 3:04And so I wanted them to have a verse that just show that we, we have to have hope in
- 3:09the Lord because he's the one that gives us our strength.
- 3:12He's the one that gives us breath in our lung.
- 3:14And so we will run the race that he sets before us and we're not going to get tired because
- 3:21we have the chance to, you know, get in shape and exercise and do everything that we needed
- 3:26to.
- 3:27And so we will run and not grow weary.
- 3:29We will walk and not be faint.
- 3:31Um, and so just to give the girls a scripture, just to kind of hang on to what was your favorite
- 3:37part of the season?
- 3:38Do you, um, learned anything?
- 3:53How could basketball be more than a sport and become like a ministry?
- 3:59Does people go to like your game and it just depends on how like you act and everything
- 4:04like that?
- 4:05Do you feel like basketball taught you anything?
- 4:08Like, what do you mean by that?
- 4:11Not just about Christ, but what, what has basketball, the sport itself taught you about
- 4:17like just normal day life stuff?
- 4:20Um, it's not only you, it's everyone else too, like on the court.
- 4:28Like you don't have to do everything by yourself.
- 4:31That's why there's a team.
- 4:32So you can just, you know, still having accountability people, um, allowing, um, others to help you.
- 4:42And so not doing everything on your own.
- 4:44Is it really hard as a team?
- 4:48If you count on one person, yeah, what happens?
- 4:52Like if that person's hurt or can't be at the game, it like, you would probably struggle
- 4:59if you rely on that one person.
- 5:01Yeah.
- 5:02And so there's five on the court.
- 5:03So there needs to be five people involved.
- 5:06And so what happens if like you get on the court and two people don't care?
- 5:12They only have three, that's not gonna work.
- 5:17And so as a leader, as an eighth grader, um, what could you say to motivate people that
- 5:27are not giving them, giving their team a hundred percent?
- 5:30Um, I feel like that's a hard question.
- 5:42They don't want to play.
- 5:44Their hearts not really into it.
- 5:45It's like, whatever.
- 5:48My question would be if you didn't like really want to do it and like all that stuff, like
- 5:53I, if it's like not your like last year, why would you do it if you don't want to put effort
- 5:58into it really?
- 5:59Because my mom is making me, she says I have to be in a sport.
- 6:05I really don't know.
- 6:09And so as you motivated people, um, that didn't have like really good days on the court, I
- 6:15mean, so if you are a team, what would you say to somebody that's having like a day that
- 6:21they really just don't feel like bringing their a game?
- 6:27They are, or they just don't feel like it.
- 6:29They are not.
- 6:30They don't feel like doing it.
- 6:31There's like this, I'm not going to put forth that much effort.
- 6:34I really don't know what I usually just don't say anything to like that.
- 6:39I've watched you this year.
- 6:43You've encouraged people.
- 6:44Yeah, but because they're not doing the best as they can.
- 6:45I know they can, but I don't know what to say to people who just don't want to play.
- 6:52No, that's what I'm saying.
- 6:53Like, so it's about they're just not putting forth the effort, um, on a practice or in
- 6:58a game.
- 7:01And so you were just like, you know, I know that you can do it.
- 7:03This is what we're doing.
- 7:05This is why we're wanting to play.
- 7:07And so having those leadership like skills is going to be really important for a team
- 7:13that is like a really small team.
- 7:17Did we have a big team?
- 7:18I mean, was on our team.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:22And so everybody is so important.
- 7:26And some scriptures that come up to mind are Colossians 3, 23, 3, 24, whatever you do work
- 7:32at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for human masters.
- 7:37And so what was one of the things that we kind of stress for?
- 7:41Who are you playing for?
- 7:44And showing that talent and everything that he's given us.
- 7:47And so it doesn't matter if you have a stand full of people and crowds, like, cause you
- 7:53know who's watching, right?
- 7:55Do you think that a perspective change for people that could help them play harder?
- 8:02If they thought that that God was in the crowd, that Jesus was in the crowd.
- 8:06Yeah, probably.
- 8:07Did that make you want to play harder?
- 8:09Yeah.
- 8:11Why?
- 8:13Because it's God.
- 8:19I don't know.
- 8:21It's God.
- 8:22It's because we always want to put our best foot forward, don't we?
- 8:28And what about your attitude on the court?
- 8:33How is that reflective in ministry?
- 8:39Because your attitude really, really reflects ministry and all that.
- 8:45So you thought with good attitude and everything.
- 8:48Yeah.
- 8:49Encouraging players to have good sportsmanship and respect even in whether they face defeat.
- 8:53And so is it really easy to have a bad attitude?
- 8:58If you lost or having a bad attitude towards the refs, if they called like bad plays or
- 9:06something like that.
- 9:07Was that allowed on our team?
- 9:09No, no.
- 9:12And so glorifying God in a victory and in a loss.
- 9:15And so teaching players to give things and remain humble during and regardless of the
- 9:20outcome.
- 9:21Because we fought our regional championship, what was one thing that I talked about the
- 9:29game before and the day of was that we're not going to be sad because we're going to
- 9:37give 110%.
- 9:39And if we lose, then we lose.
- 9:42And it was about allowing us that we're going to go out there, we're going to give 110%.
- 9:51And we were going to pray about it.
- 9:52This is what we're going to do.
- 9:53We're going to use the skills that God gave us.
- 9:55And there's going to be better teams than you out there.
- 9:57There's going to be, you know, we were the complete underdog to go as far as we did.
- 10:02And so there was nothing to hang our head low on or, you know, be shameful.
- 10:07Now, absolutely cry and be mournful and tearful.
- 10:10If you had an opportunity to win a championship and you went out there and did not play your
- 10:13absolute hardest.
- 10:15Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:16Be sad and tearful and be so sad.
- 10:19But if you gave 110%, then what's the point in being sad?
- 10:22Like you should hang your head up high and be like, we crushed it.
- 10:25Like we did a really good job.
- 10:27Just another team is better than us.
- 10:29Right.
- 10:30And so what would you, how could a kid just feel like just so sad?
- 10:38What could you do to encourage them not to be sad after a game?
- 10:44Like what you said, like trying our best, if you try your best, there's no reason to
- 10:49be sad.
- 10:50If you left everything on the court, there's nothing else you can do.
- 10:54Perfect.
- 10:55And then faith and pressure moments.
- 10:59And so sharing some examples of how faith can provide a calm and strength in high stakes
- 11:05moments.
- 11:06I mean, so was there anything, you know, in the games leading up that, you know, like
- 11:13your faith, did it help you stay calm?
- 11:15Did it help you stay focused?
- 11:17How?
- 11:18God just knew God was on our side.
- 11:21If he doesn't want us to win the game, he won't let us win the game.
- 11:26It's all like with God.
- 11:27God has a plan for everything.
- 11:32And I mean, just some coaching things.
- 11:34And so like Christ, like coaching, you know, emphasizing integrity, humility and teamwork.
- 11:39And so I was really big about, you know, teamwork.
- 11:41There's five on a court.
- 11:43There's nine on the bench.
- 11:44You know, we have nine girls and integrity is huge.
- 11:48And so we, no one was more important than the next one and allowing people to have the
- 11:55opportunity to grow and to just be a good team and sitting, you know, godly examples.
- 12:04And so coaching behaviors and models and having Christ-like behavior in their words and their
- 12:09actions.
- 12:11And so did I yell on the court?
- 12:15Yes.
- 12:17And was my yelling hateful?
- 12:19No.
- 12:20Was it encouraging?
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:24Was it appropriate?
- 12:26What do you mean by that?
- 12:32Like I was yelling at you like to do a play.
- 12:34I was yelling at you for not doing what the play was.
- 12:37There was no like hatefulness.
- 12:39There was like, I didn't like call names or like braid or like downgrade you guys.
- 12:49I feel like you didn't downgrade any of us.
- 12:52Yeah.
- 12:53I mean, because we are all there to grow and be better.
- 12:57And you know, as a coach, you know, prayer and encouragement, you know, incorporating
- 13:01the prayers before and after the games.
- 13:04And so what did we add practices and how did we end every practice?
- 13:08Maybe say that with more excitement.
- 13:17And so prayer planks.
- 13:19And so what we did at the end of every practice is everybody would line up and we would get
- 13:23into a plank position and one girl would start off with a prayer and then the whole team
- 13:28would have to do it before we could get out of it.
- 13:31And then we would not cheat if someone was on their knees, we'd stay in there longer.
- 13:36And then I would finish it off.
- 13:37And so just, you know, bringing God to the end of the practices and always ending on
- 13:41a gratitude attitude.
- 13:44And you know, we talked about scripture and so using Bible verses to inspire the team.
- 13:49And so we would say that whenever they would miss their free throws, we would run killers
- 13:53or we'd run down and backs.
- 13:55And so whenever they were lagging, we would have to say, you know, the scripture because
- 14:00we would run and not grow weary.
- 14:01And so whenever they were running, it just gave them more motivation because we know
- 14:04that God's on our side.
- 14:06And just to inspire and encourage them.
- 14:09And so playing the game with godly purpose and so your attitude on your court glorifying
- 14:13God, you know, and faith, you know, in those moments, knowing that he's always with you.
- 14:19We know that not to be anxious, not to be nervous over something.
- 14:25And so what are some character building skills that you think that Christ had taught you?
- 14:32Do you think he taught you discipline?
- 14:34Yeah, probably.
- 14:35And resilience just to not to give up.
- 14:39And so why would someone that wants to be Christ, like not want to give up?
- 14:47Because sometimes like, like he can like put some hard stuff on you to like, like, to like
- 14:53test your faith kind of and see if you'll stay with them and you just have to like go
- 15:00through them and everything like that.
- 15:03And so what what what happens when God puts us through like testing or allow certain things
- 15:10to happen?
- 15:11What's that do for you?
- 15:15Build your faith, build your faith, build your character shows us kind of really what's
- 15:19on the inside of us.
- 15:22With creating a legacy of faith, you know, players and coaches can embody Christ and
- 15:28by the other teams watching you, especially like if you had an unfair game, and we did
- 15:36not lose our minds, we did not yell at the rest, we did not get kicked out, we did not
- 15:41get a technical we didn't, you know, we didn't blatantly do anything to
- 15:51cause a commotion.
- 15:53Correct.
- 15:55And whenever the you know, the other team would like, you know, be yelling at the refs
- 16:01or something like that, there is there a point to that?
- 16:03No, no, and it's disrespectful you we have to respect authority.
- 16:11And life beyond the game.
- 16:12And you know, life lessons that are learned on the basketball can transition people into
- 16:17a lifelong faith walk.
- 16:20And so how could you transition kind of the faith and determination and, you know, grit
- 16:26that you learn on the court to your real life?
- 16:31I have one lesson I learned to like, and I guess, for your life to just be respectful,
- 16:39I feel like everything like that and try your best.
- 16:43It might not always go your way, but like, God has a plan for it.
- 16:52And so just some practical tips for some coaches that are listening, you know, praying for
- 16:56your team, and their spiritual growth.
- 16:59And so those girls were prayed for every day.
- 17:02And so in my prayer closet, their their hearts, their minds, their just their activities,
- 17:08and just to pray that God was able, I was be to be able to be used by God to show them
- 17:15something other than basketball skills, other than a victory or wins or whatever, just for
- 17:20me to be able to empower their life, to see a godly woman, you know, come out, take time
- 17:28off to know that they're important to know that they're loved, and to know that they
- 17:32can do hard things because teenage girls are so impressionable, that they they give up
- 17:36if they're out of shape, you know, just making sure that they know that life is hard, but
- 17:41you're going to have to try hard things, you're going to have to be uncomfortable.
- 17:45And just to impress, you know, that, you know, I could do it, you can do it, and just really
- 17:50just press into them and then intentional about speaking life and faith into the players.
- 17:57I just you know, telling them encouraging them and constantly that they can do it, you
- 18:01know, running faster, running harder, don't give up.
- 18:04We used to have a run, we would run a mile before every practice.
- 18:08And you know, there was girls that would just wanted to give up, just wanted to give up.
- 18:11And so just staying with them, because I can't ask the girls to do something that I can't
- 18:16do.
- 18:17So I ran every run with them, I ran every sprint with them.
- 18:21If they would miss a free throw, I would do the sprints with them.
- 18:24And so just teaching them that, again, if I can do it, you can do it.
- 18:29I wouldn't ask you to do something that I could not do.
- 18:31I don't think that's fair.
- 18:32It drove me crazy. Whenever I was a basketball player, and my coaches wanted us to run a
- 18:38ton, then you get out here and bro and do it with us.
- 18:41And then so they wouldn't because all I did was smoke all day.
- 18:45And so it was just and there were there's like the boys that were talking like in class
- 18:51that their coach wants them to run and just makes it harder and harder and he won't even
- 18:56run with them.
- 18:57And so I text him I'm like, what are you doing?
- 19:00Like why are you not running with these boys?
- 19:01And he's like, I can't run that much.
- 19:03Then don't expect them to like don't expect something out of these kids that you're not
- 19:07able to do yourself.
- 19:10And so just leading by devotions and short talks and practices.
- 19:14And so for coaches, just lead those girls, your girls, your boys and whatever you're
- 19:19doing and always try to interweave God into that.
- 19:24And so for players, reflecting love of God into your teammates, into your opponents.
- 19:33And so whenever we would be in a lineup for before a varsity game, I would be praying
- 19:38for the other team for their glory to shine for their talents to come out because we're
- 19:43all there to glorify God.
- 19:46And it was not that we were praying for our enemies, but praying that their talents shine
- 19:51through that they are able to, you know, execute their plays and actually, you know, and feel
- 19:56confident about going out there on the court and using the game for a platform for your
- 20:02faith.
- 20:03And so those prayer circles, I think you guys did a really good job, right?
- 20:09And maybe see ground in your identity in Christ and not your performance.
- 20:12And so what happens if you would have like, do you want to be known for Christ follower
- 20:16or to be a basketball star?
- 20:19And be honest.
- 20:23So what?
- 20:24So if you want to be known as both, what should come first?
- 20:31And so we asked this week that we just encourage you guys to see to look at your team, whether
- 20:41it's basketball, whether it's volleyball, soccer, field hockey, whatever.
- 20:45We encourage you guys to maybe look at how you guys can incorporate Christ on the court,
- 20:53on the field.
- 20:54Could you guys pray?
- 20:55Could you boldly go out and say, hey, can we pray before the games?
- 20:59Can we pray after the games?
- 21:02Maybe even doing like a short reading plan before the sport happens, before practice
- 21:06happens or after it.
- 21:08And we just invite you to share some stories on our comments and how you guys can incorporate
- 21:15Christ or how you can and will incorporate Christ into your next sporting event.
- 21:21And so as we close out this week, we know that tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands,
- 21:26hopefully are following our messages and that we are so thankful for you guys on fostering
- 21:32faith.
- 21:33And we just hope we encourage you guys to incorporate Christ in all sports and we glorify
- 21:41him in all that you do.
- 21:42Gia, do you want to pray us out?
- 21:44Dear God, thank you for your stay.
- 21:46Thank you for everything.
- 21:47You guys please help the sick and the sick feel better.
- 21:49I pray that everyone's minds are sharpened for the school tomorrow and I pray that everyone
- 21:57just has a good day.
- 21:58And just now pray, amen.
- 22:00Amen.
- 22:01And so stay tuned for next week while we are in discussions.
- 22:06Gia is now off into volleyball.
- 22:08We just got done with basketball season and so we're excited to see her play in that.
- 22:13And so we'll see you next week.
- 22:15Talk to you later.
- 22:16Bye.
