- 0:00Speaker 1: The Sports Bass Live on ninety seven three ESPN. Adam
- 0:03Speaker 1: kaplan for today's football at four, We're gonna look at
- 0:05Speaker 1: the rolls for this rookie class. I want to see
- 0:08Speaker 1: what Adam thinks. Howie Rosen, we talk about filling roles
- 0:12Speaker 1: and drafting for the future. Well, let's take a look
- 0:15Speaker 1: at the draft class and how Adam they fit into
- 0:17Speaker 1: the twenty twenty six Eagles.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Right, before we get into the smike, we'll talk
- 0:21Speaker 2: about the front office teamers, so, which are very interesting
- 0:23Speaker 2: and significant. So, mkay, Lemmon is just like you check
- 0:27Speaker 2: off every box with this guy. We talked about a Friday,
- 0:29Speaker 2: but I have more information. There are two things that
- 0:33Speaker 2: are concerns, but he has no control over it. His height.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It's really his arm life is very short, and that
- 0:39Speaker 2: adds a concern. Certainly, if you go against taller corners
- 0:43Speaker 2: or corners with longer arms and deep speed, they're not
- 0:46Speaker 2: gonna ask him to go deep much. Mike. He's a short,
- 0:48Speaker 2: intermediate guy, but he checks off so much hands, toughness, competitiveness,
- 0:59Speaker 2: route running. He does everything well. Now, I asked a
- 1:03Speaker 2: prominent receivers coach I've known for a number of years.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I said, Hey, what do you think of Lemon? He
- 1:08Speaker 2: told me this over the weekend. He goes, He goes,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I know that a lot of us who do what
- 1:12Speaker 2: we do and probably tell you these things and you
- 1:15Speaker 2: might roll your eyes and you know me, I don't
- 1:17Speaker 2: throw these around a lot, but they just happen to
- 1:19Speaker 2: go to the same school. There's a lot of there's
- 1:23Speaker 2: a lot of of the receiver from the Lions whose
- 1:27Speaker 2: name escapes you right now as Brown. Yeah, he goes,
- 1:31Speaker 2: he goes. He is like, I'm on ross Saint Brown
- 1:33Speaker 2: because he's got inside outside ability. No, he's not an
- 1:36Speaker 2: ex receiver, but you could reduce him, you can move him.
- 1:40Speaker 2: He said, absolutely. Philly will do this just like the
- 1:42Speaker 2: Rams do where Poka Nakua. He'll line up inside outside
- 1:49Speaker 2: right before the snap, he gets reduced, he starts moving inside.
- 1:53Speaker 2: It's because, as one Rams coach told me, over the years,
- 1:56Speaker 2: we know there's no way that him and Cooper cup
- 1:59Speaker 2: would be able to win and on their own, so
- 2:01Speaker 2: they help them. And John T. Flippo told me, the
- 2:04Speaker 2: former Eagles quarterbacks coach, has been in oc it's much
- 2:07Speaker 2: harder to cover a tough slot receiver than a dominant
- 2:12Speaker 2: outside receiver because you have to. Basically, if you don't
- 2:17Speaker 2: press that guy, you're giving him so much base. Where
- 2:21Speaker 2: the outside guy, that the true outside guy, the extra
- 2:23Speaker 2: suit might be more talented, but you can double him.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You typically don't double a slot guy. Just there's way
- 2:29Speaker 2: more inside this thing. Well maybe someday we'll go into
- 2:32Speaker 2: all that stuff. But the online rossing Brown stuff I
- 2:35Speaker 2: think is actually Jim and I was. I was like, wow, okay,
- 2:38Speaker 2: I mean this kid. Now. Now here's the question. We'll
- 2:40Speaker 2: move on Elis Stours in a minute. How much eleven
- 2:43Speaker 2: personnel are they going to play? Now, if you're bringing
- 2:46Speaker 2: him Mackay Lemon, he's a first rounder. He has to start.
- 2:49Speaker 2: If he's ready to play. We know they're going to
- 2:51Speaker 2: trade AJ Brown. That's never been really in question no
- 2:53Speaker 2: matter what's on. The fans think Lemon is an inside receiver.
- 2:57Speaker 2: That's almost always what he'll line up by the snap. Well,
- 3:01Speaker 2: if you're playing him inside in Devonte Smith outside, you've
- 3:03Speaker 2: got Dan Tavian Witz or they're gonna pay twelve and
- 3:05Speaker 2: a half million in total cash. They guaranteed about seven
- 3:08Speaker 2: million of it for twenty twenty seven. Mic he's probably
- 3:12Speaker 2: gonna play a lot, So they're gonna probably be heavy
- 3:14Speaker 2: eleven personnel.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I would imagine we see them utilize Lemon MacKaye
- 3:20Speaker 1: Lemon a lot in this offense, especially over the middle.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And that's miss him Eli Stowers and how they're going
- 3:26Speaker 1: to use him. I mean, they're gonna ask Jalen hurt
- 3:29Speaker 1: hey man get used to the inside of the hashmarks here.
- 3:31Speaker 2: He has to do it. Mike, I'm so glad you
- 3:33Speaker 2: brought that up. That is a major issue going forward.
- 3:36Speaker 2: It's really the number one issue with this offense. They
- 3:39Speaker 2: will call inside passes. Will he make the throw? Because
- 3:43Speaker 2: when Jalen is late, he kills the progression. And if
- 3:46Speaker 2: you listed the multitude of reasons why A J. Brown
- 3:49Speaker 2: wants out, that's one of them. Even onto Eli Stowers,
- 3:52Speaker 2: this will be his fourth year playing tight end. Before
- 3:56Speaker 2: that high school, great school. For first couple years in
- 4:00Speaker 2: college he was a quarterback. Yes, he needs to get
- 4:04Speaker 2: bigger and stronger physically. I mean, he's not going to
- 4:06Speaker 2: grow get taller, but he needs to get stronger. We
- 4:09Speaker 2: know that. But Mike, he is a supreme athlete, really
- 4:15Speaker 2: really smart. I like that he's a former quarterback that
- 4:18Speaker 2: he understands that sort of the nuances of what a
- 4:23Speaker 2: quarterback wants to do and what they're going to do
- 4:27Speaker 2: with him. Mike is he will be an F tight end.
- 4:29Speaker 2: What is that? Mike? An F tight end is behind
- 4:33Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. You'll notice zach Ertz did it
- 4:35Speaker 2: a lot grank kal Katerra didn't do it enough. It's
- 4:40Speaker 2: the off he might be two yards behind the line
- 4:44Speaker 2: of scrimmage, he'll he'll either stay there or he'll be
- 4:48Speaker 2: in motion. They have to do a better job of
- 4:52Speaker 2: using someone like this like green Kakuta. We had a
- 4:56Speaker 2: big problem with the way that they used him last
- 4:58Speaker 2: year on Inside the Birds. We did it all by
- 5:00Speaker 2: by coaching tape. We showed it. It wasn't just an opinion,
- 5:03Speaker 2: was a fact. The former coaching staff did a bad
- 5:05Speaker 2: job with their usage of Calcaterra, and that's going to
- 5:08Speaker 2: end here. Really, I strongly believe that Ryan Mahaffey and
- 5:12Speaker 2: Sean Manning, who worked together in Green Bay, Ryan Mahaffey
- 5:15Speaker 2: the Titans coach slash run game coordinator, they won't have
- 5:18Speaker 2: to do things that he can't do, and that was
- 5:20Speaker 2: bad last year. But he is a supreme athlete. I
- 5:22Speaker 2: wouldn't expect more than fifty percent of the staff, if
- 5:24Speaker 2: not less. Zach Ertz played forty one percent of snaps
- 5:27Speaker 2: his first year. Folks be patient, and there's gonna have
- 5:31Speaker 2: to be some patients with the scheme. The quarterback, the
- 5:34Speaker 2: offensive coordinator is now only third year coaching. We're is
- 5:38Speaker 2: gonna have to be a little patient with this thing.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But Stours is so gifted.
- 5:41Speaker 1: All right, So there are two skill players, Lemon and Stowers.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Let's go to offensive line markel Bell and see how
- 5:49Speaker 1: he might have a role this year if at all.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well, he's the questions will address every week because
- 5:54Speaker 2: Fred Johnson will be the top backup left tackle and
- 5:57Speaker 2: right tackle. That's why they brought him back. Mark hel Bell.
- 6:02Speaker 2: You'll hear this when we actually we dropped it today
- 6:06Speaker 2: the Intel with Greg Cosell. I won't give it away totally,
- 6:09Speaker 2: but Greg had a very strong opinion on Mark kel Bell,
- 6:13Speaker 2: who is their third round pick out of Miami. Bell
- 6:17Speaker 2: has a weight issue. We're told he's aware of it.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Talk to a coach who interviewed him. An offensive line
- 6:23Speaker 2: coach for another team who interviewed him leading up to
- 6:26Speaker 2: the draft and loved him. He said he connected well.
- 6:28Speaker 2: He effect he imployed his general manager to draft him
- 6:31Speaker 2: the third or fourth round, but egals beat him to it.
- 6:34Speaker 2: He's a developmental player. The hope is if Lane Johnson
- 6:37Speaker 2: retires after the season at the very minimum, because the
- 6:40Speaker 2: third round, by the way, is a start round. It's
- 6:42Speaker 2: the lowest of the true starter rounds. The hope is
- 6:45Speaker 2: he competes for that starting right job in twenty twenty seven.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Maybe versus Cam Williams. We'll see. But and by the way,
- 6:53Speaker 2: Markel Bell was a left tackle on college. You will
- 6:55Speaker 2: not play right tackle here full time. He certainly is
- 6:59Speaker 2: the guy I to offensive line coach. He said he's
- 7:01Speaker 2: not a good enough athlete. He said he would not
- 7:03Speaker 2: be a left tackle on a level and he said
- 7:05Speaker 2: he has to think that the eagle see it the
- 7:07Speaker 2: same way.
- 7:08Speaker 1: No chance you get to look at guard.
- 7:10Speaker 2: That was a Stout thing. I learned my lesson when
- 7:13Speaker 2: Stout did the unthinkable moving with Kai Beckt in the
- 7:16Speaker 2: guarded position. He never played before. You never say never.
- 7:20Speaker 2: But he's six foot nine. You want to take advantage
- 7:23Speaker 2: of this unbelievable arm length. One of the biggest offensive
- 7:28Speaker 2: linemen and longest offensive lineman the last twenty five years
- 7:31Speaker 2: to come out of a draft and chickilate at the combine.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Jeff and I brought that up yesterday wondering like, hey,
- 7:36Speaker 1: they used Bell not Bell becked in there? Could they
- 7:40Speaker 1: just see that? But you're right, that was a Stoutlin
- 7:42Speaker 1: fallon there totally. So let's go to Cole Payton because
- 7:45Speaker 1: some people would say they drafted a quarterback, but I
- 7:48Speaker 1: know what kind of role might he have?
- 7:50Speaker 2: All right? So it's another guy I have to explain
- 7:52Speaker 2: kind of what he is. Yes, he was drafted as
- 7:55Speaker 2: a quarterback, to be clear, but as one area of
- 8:00Speaker 2: scout said from another team to me, he goes and
- 8:03Speaker 2: he goes. I'll just tell you in my report, I
- 8:06Speaker 2: put in what because they his team says, what does
- 8:10Speaker 2: he project? What kind of role do you see? And
- 8:13Speaker 2: then he had to put in this report. We would
- 8:15Speaker 2: have to use him if we reject MS Taysom Hill.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He will not be a pure quarterback. He just does
- 8:19Speaker 2: not throw the ball well enough. He's his touch because
- 8:23Speaker 2: of the mechanics. You'll hear Greg co Sell talk about it.
- 8:26Speaker 2: When you have poor mechanics, which he has, it looks
- 8:30Speaker 2: like at times he has a weak arm. That's it's
- 8:33Speaker 2: hard for me to describe unless you watch it. You'll
- 8:36Speaker 2: see throws from him, you go, wow, that's that's like
- 8:38Speaker 2: a really good downfield throw. Then you'll see passes that
- 8:41Speaker 2: lose energy. You go, man, what can this guy throw
- 8:43Speaker 2: the ball past fifteen yards? It's because the mechanics are
- 8:47Speaker 2: need to be adjusted significantly. You know. Parks Frazier is
- 8:52Speaker 2: now the new quarterbacks coach and he hasn't really developed
- 8:55Speaker 2: quarterbacks before. This is a concern for me. Mike. He's
- 8:59Speaker 2: a young guy. I know he's very smart. I get that,
- 9:01Speaker 2: but this is a look, this is a project player
- 9:04Speaker 2: for them. I'm fascinating to see what they do with him,
- 9:08Speaker 2: because again he's a hybrid player. He's a quarterback first.
- 9:11Speaker 2: But you know what, Taysom Hill is the projection someone
- 9:15Speaker 2: like that, and Payson Hill is more explosive Tatsom Hill
- 9:18Speaker 2: is as a runner, but Cal Payton's bigger. He is
- 9:22Speaker 2: a bull out there. And then this guy is super
- 9:23Speaker 2: aggressive and a really good athlete. Yeah, I would say
- 9:27Speaker 2: that if you heard what Nick Sirianni said, he was
- 9:30Speaker 2: not holding anything back. This guy is explosive, all right.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Very interesting there as you take a look at a
- 9:37Speaker 1: popular little gadget player, Michael Morris, a Georgia SEC guard,
- 9:43Speaker 1: left guard, right guard. Not a lot of college experience.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, he's got some technique issues. He's a
- 9:52Speaker 2: guard only. He's a developmental player. That here's the thing
- 9:58Speaker 2: that helps him make the team. You know how he
- 9:59Speaker 2: has a history if keep the majority of his draft picks,
- 10:01Speaker 2: at least for the first year. They are so weak
- 10:04Speaker 2: at backup guard. It's the one position on the offensive line.
- 10:06Speaker 2: They've got their backup center and Drew Kendall, but they
- 10:10Speaker 2: need to figure out It's why Willy Lampkin. I mean,
- 10:14Speaker 2: we keep getting questions on him. He's a major long
- 10:16Speaker 2: shot to make it. However, when he gets cross training ots,
- 10:20Speaker 2: he's got to really push. It's still a major long shot.
- 10:24Speaker 2: There's just the Eagles have too many issues with their
- 10:27Speaker 2: with with numbers on their their to get to fifty three,
- 10:30Speaker 2: it's gonna be really hard more it's to be harder
- 10:32Speaker 2: than it has been. But Willy Lampkin's got to push
- 10:35Speaker 2: for a guard. Look, they need a backup guard man badly.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Willy Lampkin might Willy Lampkin again has a is a
- 10:41Speaker 2: major long shot, but it's got to start for him
- 10:44Speaker 2: and Michael Morris. Look, he's another guy that needs work,
- 10:48Speaker 2: but it's god, it's they have. He has an opportunity
- 10:51Speaker 2: because they don't really have a future backup guard right now.
- 10:54Speaker 1: All right, Adam Kaplin football at four. Let's go deeper
- 10:56Speaker 1: into the seventh round where they had three players. Ole
- 11:00Speaker 1: was new Ski here a safety and of course, uh,
- 11:04Speaker 1: you know we think they need a safety. Is there
- 11:06Speaker 1: a role for Cole was new Ski.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he does. He tackles really well. He's got great length,
- 11:12Speaker 2: although sometimes it's a jetriman. Most teams do not like
- 11:15Speaker 2: tall safeties over six foot three. He's a guy that's
- 11:20Speaker 2: got a shot. You know, whether it's special teams. He's
- 11:22Speaker 2: not a great athlete, he's a decent athlete. He's got
- 11:26Speaker 2: good lengths. He's a smart football player, tough. But you'll
- 11:30Speaker 2: hear Greg co Sell talk about it. I won't give it away.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It's he needs a lot of work, but they're very
- 11:35Speaker 2: light on depth of safety, so he's gonna have a shot.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Who are Banard away for him? You know, there's been
- 11:42Speaker 1: a lot of talk about this guy. I like to know, like, Okay,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you draft this guy who's radar is he on? Does
- 11:48Speaker 1: anybody else know about this guy? You know, it's just
- 11:50Speaker 1: like a situation where the Eagles we did. A lot
- 11:54Speaker 1: of people know about him. The fascinating and the better
- 11:56Speaker 1: the way measurables very much like a Miles gather Little.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I mean, he's not twenty five pounds heavier than Garrett,
- 12:01Speaker 1: but the workout I mean ridiculous.
- 12:05Speaker 2: My key is. Look, I understand he's never played football
- 12:07Speaker 2: in his life. I know he's he's got a lot
- 12:11Speaker 2: to prove. The chances are they won't if he shows anything,
- 12:15Speaker 2: because the word will get out, by the way, if
- 12:18Speaker 2: he does decently with the media. Seaton training camp, every
- 12:23Speaker 2: NFL team is what's called a news service. With these
- 12:25Speaker 2: c clips, they'll know, they'll know. So I would bet
- 12:29Speaker 2: the house somewhere or the other, whether it's Ir Someway,
- 12:32Speaker 2: they'll look to keep.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Him crazy that the guy is of all three hundred
- 12:39Speaker 1: pounders in the history of the combine, I mean, his
- 12:42Speaker 1: numbers have just exceeded all of them. But he's never
- 12:46Speaker 1: played football before. And so we'll see. And then Keyshawn
- 12:48Speaker 1: James Newbie is an edge rusher.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah, in Mexico State. He he won't make it. I mean,
- 12:55Speaker 2: it's it's just they have too many badges. So I've
- 12:58Speaker 2: told people have asked he would have to be like
- 13:01Speaker 2: the best special teams player on their team to make it.
- 13:03Speaker 2: They just have way too many edges. He's got like
- 13:06Speaker 2: a five percent chance to make it. Man the kid
- 13:08Speaker 2: from Virginia Tech last year we all thought would make it.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Antoine Powell Island didn't make it. He had great college
- 13:14Speaker 2: numbers for two years at Virginia Tech. He didn't make it.
- 13:17Speaker 2: So now Keishaw James Newby, we'll talk more about him
- 13:20Speaker 2: in training camp, a very real long shot to make.
- 13:22Speaker 1: All Right, there's a look at what the Eagles did
- 13:24Speaker 1: and some of the roles that you could expect from
- 13:26Speaker 1: this draft class this season here for Football at four
- 13:29Speaker 1: with Adam Kaplan here on the Sports Best. Check out
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Inside the Birds podcast on all podcasting platform for
- 13:36Speaker 1: the offseason news that you need.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Thank you, Adam, Mike Real Quick, Alec Halvey out he
- 13:41Speaker 2: was on his own. Yeah he did. We give to
- 13:44Speaker 2: a Patreon people a couple of weeks ago. He left
- 13:46Speaker 2: on his own to go into private business. Season get
- 13:49Speaker 2: out of football, and you have Bryce Johnson. That's a
- 13:52Speaker 2: big loss for them. Who who's on a real a
- 13:57Speaker 2: cap management and contract structure. We'll do the same thing
- 14:00Speaker 2: in Atlanta. That's a big loss for them.
- 14:02Speaker 1: All Right, good stuff from Adam Adam, appreciate it.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Man,
