- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peek Inside Gator Football. Allie Peek here. Guys,
- 0:04Speaker 1: this video is going to be brought to you by PrizePix.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Don't forget, download the app, use our code, it's HMA,
- 0:10Speaker 1: play a $ 5 lineup, and if you are a new
- 0:12Speaker 1: user and you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Okay, really,
- 0:17Speaker 1: really excited to break this down. My friend Brooks Austin
- 0:20Speaker 1: did such a good job talking about why Florida's offense
- 0:26Speaker 1: is such a nightmare. Now, there are good offenses. There
- 0:30Speaker 1: are explosive offenses. And then there are offenses that just
- 0:34Speaker 1: make defensive coordinators sit in a meeting room on Sunday
- 0:36Speaker 1: wondering what in the world they're supposed to take away.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And after watching Brooks' film review on Florida's offense against
- 0:44Speaker 1: Ole Miss, I think that's where the Gators are starting
- 0:46Speaker 1: to get. What Florida is doing right now is not
- 0:50Speaker 1: just about having good players. It's not just Jaden Baugh
- 0:52Speaker 1: running through people. It's not just Aaron Filo making throws.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It's not just BB3 being explosive. It's the way Buster
- 0:59Speaker 1: Faulkner is tying it all together. And that's what makes
- 1:02Speaker 1: this offense so, so dangerous. So I want to go
- 1:07Speaker 1: through some of what Brooks said, better known as the
- 1:11Speaker 1: film guy. And we're going to talk about this offense
- 1:15Speaker 1: against Ole Miss. And when you watch the game live, obviously,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you see that Florida scored 52 points. You saw that
- 1:22Speaker 1: 300 yards rushing and Bob making guys miss. And you
- 1:24Speaker 1: saw explosive plays. But when somebody like Brooks goes back
- 1:28Speaker 1: and slows the tape down, you start seeing why all
- 1:32Speaker 1: of this is working. And the biggest thing that jumped
- 1:34Speaker 1: out to me from his review was pretty simple. Florida
- 1:37Speaker 1: is giving defenses way too much to think about. That
- 1:41Speaker 1: is what makes this offense so hard to deal with.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Brooks said something really early in the review that I
- 1:46Speaker 1: think sums up the entire thing. Everything has a purpose.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Everything has another layer attached to it. Florida shows you
- 1:54Speaker 1: one thing, they wait for you to overreact to it,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and then they hit you with something that looks exactly
- 1:59Speaker 1: the same until it's too late, and it's not. That's
- 2:02Speaker 1: the offense, and that is a nightmare for defenses. So
- 2:06Speaker 1: let's start with that opening drive. Brooks points out that
- 2:09Speaker 1: Florida comes out in 21 personnel. Two running backs, one
- 2:12Speaker 1: tight end, nothing crazy about that. But then before the snap,
- 2:15Speaker 1: they scatter into a completely different formation. So now you're
- 2:18Speaker 1: in pistol. Then Vernell Brown goes in jet motion. Now
- 2:22Speaker 1: the defense is thinking about him. And then you have
- 2:24Speaker 1: to think about him because you can take that football
- 2:26Speaker 1: 70 yards if you lose leverage for a half a second.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So they have to think about him. But Florida runs counter.
- 2:34Speaker 1: On the backside, you've also got a read option element.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And then there's a tight end who can leak out.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So before the ball is even snapped, the defense has
- 2:42Speaker 1: already had to process, okay, where did everybody go? What
- 2:45Speaker 1: formation are we actually in? Is VB3 getting the ball?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Is this counter? Is the quarterback pulling in? Is the
- 2:50Speaker 1: tight end leaking? All of that is a lot. And
- 2:53Speaker 1: the beautiful part is that Florida's offense isn't confused by
- 2:56Speaker 1: any of it. They know exactly what they want. The
- 2:59Speaker 1: defense is the one scrambling. Brooks made a really interesting
- 3:02Speaker 1: point here. A lot of offenses line up, wait for
- 3:05Speaker 1: the defense to declare what it's going to do. Then
- 3:08Speaker 1: everybody looks to the sideline and the coordinator changes the play.
- 3:11Speaker 1: We saw that a lot the last couple of years.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Florida isn't doing that. They are confident in what they're
- 3:16Speaker 1: calling from the get-go. They line up one way, they
- 3:19Speaker 1: shift into whatever they want, and they run it. So
- 3:22Speaker 1: it's easy for Florida. It's hard for the defense. And
- 3:25Speaker 1: that's smart offense. The other thing this does is messes
- 3:29Speaker 1: with the linebacker's eyes. Brooks actually was laughing because when
- 3:33Speaker 1: you watch it, you can see Ole Miss linebackers like
- 3:36Speaker 1: bouncing back and forth. They're looking at motion. They're looking
- 3:39Speaker 1: at the backfield. They're looking at the tight end. They're
- 3:41Speaker 1: trying to figure out where the strength of the formation moved.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And while they're thinking, Florida's actually coming downhill with them.
- 3:49Speaker 1: That's what makes Buster Faulkner so dangerous. He's not just
- 3:52Speaker 1: drawing up plays. He is forcing defenders to process information
- 3:56Speaker 1: like in real time. And the more information you force
- 3:59Speaker 1: somebody to process, before and immediately after the snap, the
- 4:02Speaker 1: slower they play. If I'm a linebacker and I know
- 4:06Speaker 1: exactly what Florida is doing, I can trigger downhill. If
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm standing there thinking, okay, is this jet? Is this counter?
- 4:13Speaker 1: Is this stretch? Is this RPO? Now I'm a half
- 4:16Speaker 1: a step late. And a half a step late against
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jaden Baugh, that's a problem. Brooke's other big takeaway is basically,
- 4:25Speaker 1: even when you have the play defended correctly, then you
- 4:28Speaker 1: still have to tackle the Number 13, and good luck
- 4:31Speaker 1: with that. There are plays in this film where Ole
- 4:34Speaker 1: Miss is actually in a decent position defensively. They have
- 4:38Speaker 1: support outside. They have bodies around the football. They look
- 4:41Speaker 1: like they have the play leveraged. And then Bob makes
- 4:44Speaker 1: the first guy miss, and then another guy. And now
- 4:46Speaker 1: he's on an 18-yard gain. So schematically, Florida is already
- 4:50Speaker 1: creating problems. But then when you finally get everything lined
- 4:53Speaker 1: up correctly, then you have to tackle one of the
- 4:56Speaker 1: hardest guys in college football to tackle right now. And
- 4:58Speaker 1: that is where scheme and personnel kind of come together.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Brooks goes through the entire list of problems. Baugh is
- 5:04Speaker 1: a nightmare to tackle. Duke Clark can hit a home run, too.
- 5:07Speaker 1: VB3 can take any touch to the house. Dallas Wilson,
- 5:11Speaker 1: he's an NFL-level threat. Eric Singleton's back now. The tight
- 5:14Speaker 1: ends are playing well. The offensive line is getting the
- 5:17Speaker 1: job done. And Aaron Filo, he will stand in the pocket,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and he will take a hit to deliver the ball.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So where is the easy answer? That's the problem. There
- 5:26Speaker 1: isn't one. And I think that's the biggest difference between
- 5:29Speaker 1: this offense and some of Florida's offenses that we've seen
- 5:32Speaker 1: in the past. There have been years where you could say, okay,
- 5:36Speaker 1: stop this one player. Take away this one concept. Force
- 5:39Speaker 1: Florida to do something else. But right now, what are
- 5:42Speaker 1: you taking away? Do you load the box to stop Ba? Great.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Now you're going to deal with deep overs and play action.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Do you stay back and protect yourself against the pass?
- 5:52Speaker 1: All right. Well, Florida's going to run stretch at you
- 5:54Speaker 1: all day. Do you start flying towards stretch? Well, here
- 5:58Speaker 1: comes counter. Do you start over committing to the run? Well,
- 6:02Speaker 1: now the tight end is going to slip into the flat.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Do you get aggressive with your safeties? Well, now Dallas
- 6:08Speaker 1: Wilson or BB3 is running into that grass that's now
- 6:11Speaker 1: all behind you. Everything kind of connects, and that's what
- 6:14Speaker 1: Brooks kept coming back to. One of his favorite examples
- 6:17Speaker 1: is Florida's boundary stretch. Florida ran it over and over
- 6:20Speaker 1: and over again against Ole Miss. According to Brooks, it
- 6:23Speaker 1: accounted for a huge portion of Florida's 300 yards rushing.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And here's where it gets really interesting. On one of
- 6:29Speaker 1: the early plays, Florida has a receiver who looks like
- 6:32Speaker 1: he might be inserting into the safety as a blocker,
- 6:35Speaker 1: but he doesn't block anybody. He just runs. So why
- 6:37Speaker 1: does he do that? Well, Florida runs so many deep
- 6:41Speaker 1: crossing routes off play action that the safety sees the
- 6:44Speaker 1: receiver coming and he thinks, okay, well, here comes the
- 6:46Speaker 1: deep over. So the safety moves with him. The corner
- 6:49Speaker 1: has to respect him too. And while those DBs are
- 6:53Speaker 1: chasing a route that isn't actually happening, Jaden Baugh has
- 6:57Speaker 1: the football running stretch underneath it. That is nasty. These
- 7:00Speaker 1: receivers didn't even have to block anybody. The threat of
- 7:04Speaker 1: him blocked them. That's part of this offensive scheme that
- 7:08Speaker 1: you don't always see watching the broadcast. Sometimes a guy
- 7:11Speaker 1: makes a huge play without ever touching anybody simply because
- 7:15Speaker 1: the defense has already seen something on film and they
- 7:19Speaker 1: know what that player could be doing. That's what Florida
- 7:23Speaker 1: is creating. Every concept puts something else in your head.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And once you start thinking about that thing, then they
- 7:29Speaker 1: hit you somewhere else. Brooks also spent a lot of
- 7:32Speaker 1: time praising Florida's offensive line. specifically the athleticism of this group.
- 7:37Speaker 1: He talks a lot about number 52 at center and
- 7:40Speaker 1: how well he moves. There are several examples on stretch
- 7:43Speaker 1: where the center is reaching a defensive lineman, getting to
- 7:46Speaker 1: the play side shoulder and turning his hips and creating
- 7:49Speaker 1: an alley. And Brooks basically says, this is where football
- 7:54Speaker 1: is going. You really need athletic centers, guys who can move.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You need 300 pound players who can cover ground. Florida
- 8:02Speaker 1: has that right now in Harrison, and it isn't only
- 8:04Speaker 1: at center. Brooks points out the tackles moving, the guards
- 8:08Speaker 1: climbing to linebackers, backside linebackers, linemen running to cut off pursuit.
- 8:15Speaker 1: The entire offensive line just looks more athletic than it
- 8:18Speaker 1: has in previous years. I'm going to take a short
- 8:22Speaker 1: break from this video to tell you guys about something
- 8:23Speaker 1: really exciting. We are now available on Apple Podcast and Spotify.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So if you would prefer to listen to a show
- 8:30Speaker 1: like this on audio, but you've been tuning into YouTube
- 8:33Speaker 1: because that's where it's been, now you have options. So
- 8:35Speaker 1: make sure you check us out over there as well.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And if there is a platform we should be on
- 8:39Speaker 1: that we're not, let me know down in the comments
- 8:41Speaker 1: and I'll try and get on there for you as well.
- 8:43Speaker 1: This is something you guys have been asking for. So
- 8:45Speaker 1: we're trying to make it happen. So let me know.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Here to help. Appreciate you guys for sure. Okay, so
- 8:52Speaker 1: here's another point Brooks makes that I think is important.
- 8:55Speaker 1: He said last year that this offensive line looked weak.
- 8:58Speaker 1: They did. John Summerall talked about it when he got
- 9:01Speaker 1: to Florida. He said the weight room numbers just were
- 9:03Speaker 1: not where they needed to be. But now we see
- 9:05Speaker 1: a group that is stronger, but they also look leaner
- 9:09Speaker 1: and more athletic. And that's a really good combination because
- 9:12Speaker 1: the run scheme Florida is using demands movement. When you
- 9:15Speaker 1: run wide zone and stretch, you have to be able
- 9:18Speaker 1: to reach people. You have to be able to run.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You have to be able to get your body into
- 9:21Speaker 1: position and seal somebody off. And Florida's offensive linemen are
- 9:25Speaker 1: doing it. Brooks calls out one backside block in particular
- 9:28Speaker 1: where the offensive lineman has a defender who already has
- 9:31Speaker 1: leverage on him. That's a hard block. But the lineman
- 9:34Speaker 1: runs and runs and runs and gets there. And then
- 9:37Speaker 1: he buries him. And Brooks basically says that's what wide
- 9:40Speaker 1: zone looks like when it's working. There is always an
- 9:44Speaker 1: angle somewhere. And that's another huge part of this. Florida
- 9:47Speaker 1: doesn't need every single block to be perfect. The running
- 9:50Speaker 1: back can make you right. The offensive lineman keeps working.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The defense over-pursues. Baugh puts his foot in the ground.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And now what looked like a dead play suddenly has
- 10:01Speaker 1: a crease. And when the backs are running the way
- 10:03Speaker 1: that Baugh and Clark are running, that's a problem. Brooks
- 10:07Speaker 1: actually refers to Jaden Baugh as a tank with twitch,
- 10:10Speaker 1: which might be the best description I think I've ever
- 10:12Speaker 1: heard of him because that is exactly what he is.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You think you have a big back bottled up, then
- 10:17Speaker 1: he jump cuts. You think he's just a power runner,
- 10:20Speaker 1: then he runs away from you. You think you have
- 10:22Speaker 1: him contained, then he runs through an arm tackle. So
- 10:25Speaker 1: now the defense is already confused schematically, and the guy
- 10:28Speaker 1: carrying the football is also making defenders wrong physically. That's
- 10:33Speaker 1: why this offense has become so deadly. And then there's
- 10:36Speaker 1: Vernell Brown. Brooks points out on an early down play
- 10:39Speaker 1: where Florida gets the ball to him on a tunnel screen.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Ole Miss actually gets people around the football. It looks defended,
- 10:46Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Brown finds a crease and turns it into
- 10:49Speaker 1: about 15 yards. And Brooks' point is that every time
- 10:53Speaker 1: number one touches the football, there is a chance the
- 10:55Speaker 1: play is over. That creates another level of stress on
- 10:59Speaker 1: the defense. If you're a defender, you can't take a
- 11:02Speaker 1: lazy angle. You can't miss or hesitate. He can erase
- 11:05Speaker 1: it instantly. And here's why Faulkner started using Florida's base
- 11:09Speaker 1: plays against the defense. This might be one of my
- 11:12Speaker 1: favorite parts of Brooks' breakdown. Florida has run stretch to
- 11:16Speaker 1: the boundary over and over and over again. Stretch, stretch, stretch.
- 11:18Speaker 1: The defense has seen it all day. Now you get
- 11:21Speaker 1: into a situation where Ole Miss is expecting that again.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Same look, same setup. Everything screams stretch, except this time
- 11:27Speaker 1: Florida gives the ball to BV3 on an end around.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Brooks calls those the kill shots of your base plays,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and I think that's a really good description. Good coordinators
- 11:36Speaker 1: don't just have a base play. They have answers off
- 11:40Speaker 1: that base play. They say, okay, once the defense commits
- 11:43Speaker 1: to stopping this, what is the thing that kills them?
- 11:46Speaker 1: That's what Florida has. The defense spends all afternoon trying
- 11:50Speaker 1: to stop stretch. Then Florida uses that reaction that they
- 11:53Speaker 1: have kind of trained into them against them. And that
- 11:57Speaker 1: concept continues later on in the game. Same formation, same action.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Now they pull the football. Boot action. Tight end is
- 12:04Speaker 1: open underneath. Deep over is open too. Then once Ole
- 12:08Speaker 1: Miss finally starts fitting the stretch a little better, Boom,
- 12:12Speaker 1: counter back the other direction. And now Florida is ripping
- 12:15Speaker 1: off another explosive. That is what makes this offense so difficult.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You cannot overcommit. Every time Ole Miss started leaning towards
- 12:23Speaker 1: one answer, Florida had something waiting for them. And that's
- 12:27Speaker 1: why Brooks ends the film review almost joking about what
- 12:30Speaker 1: a defensive coordinator should do against this. His answer was pray.
- 12:34Speaker 1: And I know he was having fun with it, but
- 12:35Speaker 1: the point's real. What is the answer? Because defensively, you
- 12:38Speaker 1: usually go into a game saying, we're taking away this.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But you can't take away everything. So what are you
- 12:45Speaker 1: choosing against Florida? Baugh? Okay. Then how are you dealing
- 12:49Speaker 1: with VB3? How are you handling Dallas Wilson? What happens
- 12:52Speaker 1: when Singleton is in there too? What about the tight ends?
- 12:55Speaker 1: What about Philo on the play action? And Philo deserves
- 12:58Speaker 1: a lot of credit in this film review too. Brooks
- 13:01Speaker 1: showed one passing situation where Ole Miss brings pressure. Florida
- 13:04Speaker 1: doesn't have a clean pocket. There is a defender coming
- 13:07Speaker 1: right towards Philo, but he stands there and he takes
- 13:10Speaker 1: it and he delivers the deep over for a first down.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Brooks basically says a lot of quarterbacks would bail out
- 13:16Speaker 1: of that pocket. They would duck or scramble. They would panic.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Philo just sits there and is like, nope, I'm throwing it.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And that is huge for an offense like this. The
- 13:24Speaker 1: entire reason play action and these deep crossing routes work
- 13:28Speaker 1: is that the quarterback has to trust the design. He
- 13:30Speaker 1: has to stand in there and deliver it. If the
- 13:33Speaker 1: quarterback gets nervous every time somebody flashes in his face,
- 13:37Speaker 1: the offense falls apart. Philo isn't doing that. So now
- 13:40Speaker 1: Florida has a quarterback willing to hang out in the pocket.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Running backs who can punish you, receivers who scare you vertically,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and a returner and a playmaker in BB3, tight ends
- 13:50Speaker 1: who are involved, and an offensive line that is moving people.
- 13:54Speaker 1: That's a lot of weapons. But again, the biggest thing
- 13:57Speaker 1: isn't simply the talent. It's that everything fits together. The
- 14:01Speaker 1: stretch looks like the boot. The boot looks like the stretch.
- 14:04Speaker 1: The counter comes off the stretch. The end around comes
- 14:06Speaker 1: off the stretch. The deep over makes the stretch easier.
- 14:09Speaker 1: The jet motion makes the counter easier. Everything is connected.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So you're not defending 50 random plays. You're defending one
- 14:17Speaker 1: idea with about 15 different answers attached to it. And
- 14:21Speaker 1: that's really hard. I think that's what makes Florida's offense
- 14:24Speaker 1: feel sustainable as well. This is not an offense living
- 14:27Speaker 1: on busted coverages. It's not an offense where you say, well,
- 14:30Speaker 1: they hit three 70-yard passes and that was just the
- 14:33Speaker 1: whole game. Florida is creating stress structurally. That can travel.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Because even if you play a better defense, those defenders
- 14:42Speaker 1: still have eyes. They still have rules. They still have
- 14:44Speaker 1: run fits. They still have to make choices. And Faulkner
- 14:48Speaker 1: is forcing them to make those choices now. over and
- 14:52Speaker 1: over again. Then when they finally make the right choice,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Jaden Baugh might just run through them anyway. That's the
- 14:58Speaker 1: scary part. And Brooks made one more observation that I
- 15:01Speaker 1: think tells you a lot about where this team is
- 15:03Speaker 1: right now. They're having fun. You can see it on film.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Guys are celebrating. The sideline's into it. John Summerall is
- 15:09Speaker 1: down there losing his ever-loving mind and celebrating with them.
- 15:13Speaker 1: There's energy and confidence. This group believes in what it's doing.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And when an offense has talent, a good design, physicality,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and confidence, that's when things start snowballing. So when we
- 15:25Speaker 1: ask why Florida scored 52 points against Ole Miss, why
- 15:29Speaker 1: they ran for 300 yards, why they're getting more difficult
- 15:32Speaker 1: to defend every single week, I think Brooks Austin's film
- 15:36Speaker 1: review gives us the answer. It isn't one thing. That
- 15:39Speaker 1: is the answer. There are too many things, too many weapons,
- 15:42Speaker 1: too many looks, too many motions, Too many concepts that
- 15:45Speaker 1: start the same way and end somewhere completely different. And
- 15:49Speaker 1: right now Buster Faulkner is constantly putting defenders in a
- 15:52Speaker 1: position where if they're wrong, Florida gets them. And sometimes
- 15:56Speaker 1: even if they're right, Florida gets them anyway. And that's
- 15:59Speaker 1: why this offense has become so deadly. And the scary
- 16:03Speaker 1: part is that it still feels like they have more
- 16:06Speaker 1: to add. Eric Singleton was sparingly involved last week. I
- 16:11Speaker 1: bet he's a lot more involved this week. Young players
- 16:13Speaker 1: are getting more comfortable. The offensive line continues to gel.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Aaron Filo is getting more and more experience as we
- 16:19Speaker 1: go on. And Buster Faulkner is going to keep putting
- 16:21Speaker 1: things on film that defenses now have to prepare for.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Every successful play creates another problem the following week. That's
- 16:29Speaker 1: what great offenses do. So I'll ask you guys, if
- 16:32Speaker 1: you are a defensive coordinator getting ready for Florida right now,
- 16:36Speaker 1: what are you taking away? Jaden Baugh, BB3, the play
- 16:40Speaker 1: action passing game? Because I'm not sure there's a good answer.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And apparently Brooks Austin isn't either. I want to know
- 16:46Speaker 1: what you guys think down in the comments. I appreciate
