- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Shout about your team wins at work.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Praise your team to your boss.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Too many managers stay silent and hope their bosses notice their good performance.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: They feel embarrassed or don't feel confident enough to shout about team achievements.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I'm hoping to change that for you today.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Other managers shout too loudly about themselves and alienate team members and bosses.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Shouting about yourself is much more likely to cause you problems than get you noticed.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Avoid shouting too loudly or too often about yourself.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Instead, shout about how your team has done.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: For any manager performing at an average level or better, when compared to your peers, what we discussed today will help you get noticed, get on your boss's and leadership team members' radar, develop your reputation, increase your influence and impact, and get you promoted more quickly.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You and your team getting noticed for all the right reasons is great for firstly increasing your credibility and everyone's trust in your competence as a manager.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Secondly, providing you with great influence and visibility across your organization.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Third, increasing your team's morale, confidence and motivation.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Fourth, building you and your team's confidence in what you're doing.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Fifth, increases you and your team's autonomy and ability to make impactful decisions.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Sixth, making it easier and cheaper to attract talented individuals into your team.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: I was promoted 13 times in my career all the way up to board level.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I had plenty of colleagues that worked just as hard as me, but they did not get promoted as quickly.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Part of the reason was how I went about ensuring bosses and team members understood what we as a team had achieved and how it helped my boss and the company.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Proactively having a plan and taking action to communicate achievements will get you a lot further.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Bosses and leaders are increasingly time poor and pressurised, so getting noticed is harder and harder without proactive action.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So why am I suggesting that you spend a lot more effort to shout about your team rather than yourself?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: A manager's performance is their team's performance.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: This is very important to know, believe, and use as a manager.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: No one really likes people who shout about themselves.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Most people are very happy when you shout about someone else or about them.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Shout about your team's progress and your team achievements.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Your team members will be very happy with you.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: A manager singing your praises is motivational, creates loyalty and a lot of goodwill.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: When a manager shouts about their team's performance, they are indirectly shouting about their own performance.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: A manager doesn't have to say a thing about themselves and plenty of people make the connection.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: What is even better, you have so many reasons to shout about your team performance and progress as part of good communication in a business.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: There are much fewer reasons to shout about your own performance.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Should about your team at work.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Shout about how your team has done.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Praise your team to your boss.

- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Next, if you don't have a plan and take action to communicate wins, you and your team's achievements will just get lost in the sea of hardworking people in your business.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: So don't disappear.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Have a plan and take action to communicate wins.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Everyone is so busy and under pressure.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Gone are the days that bosses and stakeholders really notice everything you're up to unless you make it really easy for them.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Your plan should start with your boss.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: This is the most important person to keep up to date with all your team's achievements and wins.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: It is always psychologically easier and less intimidating to start communicating to one person that you already have a relationship with.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Your boss wants and needs to know what you and your team are doing.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: They can't really do their job if they don't know.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Your boss can't appreciate what they don't know about either.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Set yourself an initial target.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I would update my boss at least once per week on all the important initiatives that the team were working on.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I will give an update on progress.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Personally, I like to talk to my boss every other day or so.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: You know, that's two to three times a week.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I feel once per week is not enough.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I want to get face-to-face time if possible, then I would call my boss and finally, if they're really hard to get hold of, I would email them.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Praise your team to your boss regularly so your boss knows exactly what is happening, what is being done next, and how the team is progressing against targets.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: The other group you should keep just as up to date on progress is your own team.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Get them proud of their own achievements, of how the team is progressing, and they will update others in the business.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: They do some of your work for you when this happens.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Communicate team progress towards goals three to five times per week.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Use different methods, you know, team meetings, huddles, emails, put it on the wall, etc.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: When you are regularly communicating progress to your boss and then to your team, create a target list of other stakeholders that might benefit from updates from you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: They can then coordinate their work better or plan better or have confidence that you will deliver on time.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Create a plan of contact points or communication habits and take action to shout about your team at work.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Here are five practical actions you should take to shout about your team at work.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Firstly, when you're shouting about your team, do your best to link actions and activities to the results that you create.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: This is not always appropriate.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: The more often and the clearer you can link actions to results, the more credit your team will get, and as a result you will get.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: An example.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: We added two steps into the process, one being a quick phone call to the client, which has resulted in clients paying four days earlier on average.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: That means we have an additional£2.3 million in our bank account as a result.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Link action to measurable results whenever you can.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Secondly, give a lot of progress updates.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Your bosses love progress updates.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: They create confidence that you have not forgotten about a key deliverable and you will deliver what you promised when you promised it.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Progress updates give you a great platform to shout about the team.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: For example, popping around to a boss, you might say, I just want to give you a quick update on the ABC Cosper project.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: The team have done brilliantly working together with a design team.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: They have gone through every component and assembly process.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So far, they've identified£3.42 of savings per unit without compromising quality.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: This will translate into almost 1.9 million of savings over the year.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: We are expanding the project to cover every product in that category.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Use Team Progress updates to praise your team to your boss and communicate your team wins.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Also update your boss on the bad news.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: I think a no surprises policy is very sensible to keep your boss happy and build their confidence in you.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Thirdly, another very useful action is to create a team KPI scorecard.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Make sure you link every KPI you use through to a component of the company strategy.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Explain each KPI and link to your boss.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: You can then use your scorecard to quantify the team progress made and shout about your team wins.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: KPI scorecards are great to shout about your team achievements.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Fourth, team and team member prizes are another great way to shout about team progress at work.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Set team progress milestones and add prizes against achieving each milestone ahead of time.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: As you get nearer hitting the final target, the prizes should increase in value.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Think of all the different types of prizes for which you don't need a budget.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Praise, recognition, shout outs, coming in late, extra holiday, or you doing their job for a morning.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Get creative.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Then think about prizes that need some budget and put those into action too.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Be creative and create a sense of fun in the team if you can.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Then you can think about options external to the company, you know, such as regional or sector prizes.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Fifth, create newsletters, emails, updates, reports and other written updates that you can circulate more widely to key team stakeholders and possibly leadership team members.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Let your boss know what you're planning first.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: You could also plan a series of five-minute update meetings with each key stakeholder each month.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Plan out an action how you will communicate your team wins more widely in your company.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: All of these actions take some courage, confidence, and a bit of work to get started.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Once you have started, it becomes a lot easier.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Take one of the actions that you're not doing and start it this week.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Create a habit so you get into the rhythm to shout about your team at work.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So, in summary, your team's success is your success as a manager.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: Shouting about your team is much easier and more acceptable than shouting about yourself.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Shout about your team at work.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: Here are the five actions I suggest you start doing or improve doing to shout about your team wins at work.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Firstly, link actions and activity to the results when you communicate your team wins.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Secondly, give a lot of progress updates to shout about your team achievements.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Third, create a team KPI scorecard and use this to shout about team progress, and more importantly, quantify team progress.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Fourth, use team and team member prizes as a communication tool.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: And then fifth, create written updates that you can circulate to key team stakeholders.
