- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good next to you.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonia
- 0:10Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. Good morning. It's just Solo, me,
- 0:14Speaker 1: myself and I for the whole week, and I know
- 0:16Speaker 1: this is going to be an extra tough day for
- 0:18Speaker 1: you to get back to work and school. So, I'm
- 0:20Speaker 1: going to give you the energy you need even though
- 0:22Speaker 1: I had a very eventful weekend. I'll tell you more
- 0:25Speaker 1: about it later on. Stay tuned. Singapore's number one hit
- 0:28Speaker 1: music station.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I cannot imagine how tough it must be to be
- 0:33Speaker 1: waking up today. I mean, actually, I can. I, I
- 0:36Speaker 1: struggled this morning, like majorly struggled after, you know, a
- 0:41Speaker 1: weekend of uh lots of celebrations and activities and
- 0:45Speaker 1: You know, just people being really, really happy and either
- 0:49Speaker 1: that or you might have traveled. So yesterday I did
- 0:52Speaker 1: do a day trip and I want to tell you
- 0:53Speaker 1: more about it later on after 7 or maybe even
- 0:56Speaker 1: after 8 when I opened up the phone lines because
- 0:58Speaker 1: I bumped into so many Singaporeans along the way. Even
- 1:02Speaker 1: when I got to my destination, I mean, there were
- 1:04Speaker 1: Singaporeans there. Naturally, because it's really close by. I'll let
- 1:08Speaker 1: you keep guessing where I went for a day trip.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Um, because after the show yesterday, I immediately left and
- 1:14Speaker 1: I got back late-ish last night. So I am not
- 1:19Speaker 1: doing any favors for myself this morning. I knew I
- 1:21Speaker 1: was going to be tired and also my day trip
- 1:24Speaker 1: involved a lot of physical activity. I actually haven't shared
- 1:28Speaker 1: anything about it yet on my social, so you, you
- 1:30Speaker 1: won't get any clues there.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But I'll tell you more later on. The Weekend, Nothing
- 1:34Speaker 1: is lost, right here on 987, Singapore's number one hit
- 1:37Speaker 1: music station. Wasn't this from one of the latest Avatar movies?
- 1:41Speaker 1: I mean, I can't really recall, but I don't think
- 1:44Speaker 1: I watched it. I'm, I'm pretty, pretty sure I didn't
- 1:46Speaker 1: watch it. I actually saw it on um one of
- 1:50Speaker 1: my choices, as in on the list when I was
- 1:53Speaker 1: flying Singapore Airlines uh recently.
- 1:55Speaker 1: And it was either that or Project Hail Mary that
- 1:58Speaker 1: I was going to watch, or the drama. So since
- 2:01Speaker 1: it was a very long flight, um, to, well, recently
- 2:05Speaker 1: when I went to Belgium, so going there, I watched
- 2:09Speaker 1: Project Hail Mary. I cried a lot. Coming back, I
- 2:12Speaker 1: watched the drama. So that was about it. The rest
- 2:16Speaker 1: of the time I was sleeping and eating. Um, I
- 2:18Speaker 1: always think like, oh, I can binge-watch a bunch of stuff,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but
- 2:22Speaker 1: After a while, you're like, oh man, I mean, I'm
- 2:23Speaker 1: just gonna, I'm just gonna eat and I'm going to
- 2:25Speaker 1: sleep as well because I, I think there's only that
- 2:27Speaker 1: much that I can process in one sitting. So I
- 2:30Speaker 1: can't do like two back to back movies that are,
- 2:33Speaker 1: you know, 2, 2-ish hours each, right?
- 2:36Speaker 1: Actually, I'm not sure, it was the drama almost 2 hours,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I can't really recall, but anyway, lots of great movies
- 2:41Speaker 1: and I always find that being on flights, especially long ones,
- 2:44Speaker 1: is a great time to catch up with it. Although
- 2:46Speaker 1: some movies, I understand arguably that you have to watch
- 2:50Speaker 1: it in cinemas or IMAX or even on a bigger screen,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know, it's different and I feel like no matter
- 2:56Speaker 1: how
- 2:57Speaker 1: Good your headphones are. If you even bring your own headphones,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I see people connecting their own headphones on board a flight.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's still different than watching it on a really big screen,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you know. Anyway, welcome to the 11th of August. Happy
- 3:10Speaker 1: birthday again, Singapore, in case you just joined me. About
- 3:13Speaker 1: 6:22 right now. Coming up very, very soon. Gonna catch
- 3:16Speaker 1: up on what you might have possibly missed over the
- 3:18Speaker 1: past few days. Maybe you just got back from a
- 3:21Speaker 1: long weekend. I know tons of my friends did. They
- 3:23Speaker 1: were in Bangkok.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Some of them were in Bali, many other places, and
- 3:28Speaker 1: I really hope that you have a fantastic. Earlier on,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I said, unfortunately, this is coming back. And of course,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I also said it's not necessarily a good thing, but
- 3:37Speaker 1: it is something that we have been dealing with pretty
- 3:40Speaker 1: much our whole lives here in Singapore, right? The haze
- 3:43Speaker 1: could be coming in, in the coming week due to
- 3:46Speaker 1: dry conditions around our region. Um, there are some hotspots
- 3:49Speaker 1: and smoke plumes that have been spotted around the Sumatra
- 3:52Speaker 1: and Kalimantan area.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And I think about um about the 24 hour PSI
- 3:59Speaker 1: it reached about 81 in the central region of Singapore
- 4:03Speaker 1: during National Day itself at 1 p.m. So, this means
- 4:06Speaker 1: it could be a bit higher and it could inch
- 4:09Speaker 1: a little bit higher as well, but our friends at
- 4:10Speaker 1: NEA are very, very closely monitoring the situation. Um, should
- 4:14Speaker 1: it reach unhealthy range, it will issue daily haze advisories
- 4:19Speaker 1: and you will not be able to do much outdoor activities,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think. I remember it was a time where
- 4:24Speaker 1: I was in school and the haze was really bad.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So they banned, they stopped like PE outdoors and everything,
- 4:30Speaker 1: so everything went indoors in the hall and I was
- 4:32Speaker 1: so happy.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Like a few of my friends and I, because we're
- 4:37Speaker 1: not fans of um outdoor sports. So every time it,
- 4:41Speaker 1: it rained or there was a reason for it to
- 4:44Speaker 1: be indoors in the hall with like cooling fans and everything, yeah,
- 4:48Speaker 1: we didn't have air-con in our hall back then.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Um, it, it only got developed like in the recent years, right?
- 4:55Speaker 1: So yeah, we survived without air conditioning back then, it
- 4:57Speaker 1: was crazy, but also it wasn't as hot back then,
- 5:00Speaker 1: I'm assuming, because when Joakim and I go for school visits, where,
- 5:02Speaker 1: we always say, hey, man, nowadays, right, like when we
- 5:05Speaker 1: go to school halls that don't have air conditioning or
- 5:08Speaker 1: they're in the midst of doing it, it's, I don't
- 5:11Speaker 1: remember it being that hot back then when I was
- 5:13Speaker 1: in school, I mean, global warming and such, right? So
- 5:15Speaker 1: it really is a thing.
- 5:17Speaker 1: So, hey, um, just take note, if you do feel
- 5:20Speaker 1: or see any haze or you feel like, why is
- 5:22Speaker 1: it a bit smokier than usual, you're not imagining things,
- 5:25Speaker 1: it could actually be happening, but we'll keep you updated
- 5:28Speaker 1: and our friends from NEA. After a very huge long weekends,
- 5:31Speaker 1: I think you've been up to a lot. I have
- 5:33Speaker 1: been too as well. I can't wait to tell you
- 5:35Speaker 1: more later after 7.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I did a day trip yesterday. I don't know if
- 5:39Speaker 1: you managed to guess it just yet, but I bumped
- 5:41Speaker 1: into quite a number of Singaporeans even at the destination itself.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And if you've been guessing all morning, it's actually Batam.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It's been, I don't know, man, like years since I've
- 5:52Speaker 1: even been to, in fact, you know what, I don't
- 5:54Speaker 1: think I've ever been to Batam like for fun ever. Previously,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I went for a filming thing, like for a work thing,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and that was it. I don't think I ever went back.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So now that things are getting a bit more um
- 6:06Speaker 1: developed there and finessed, I'll I'll tell you more later on.
- 6:09Speaker 1: On, OK? Especially if you are planning a day trip
- 6:13Speaker 1: very soon or you want to get into some sports or,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, wellness, things like that. Yeah, I'll, I'll fill
- 6:18Speaker 1: you in later. Anyways, it's time to open up phone lines, 669-11987.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Before you get to work or school, especially school, if
- 6:26Speaker 1: you had a lot of NDP celebrations over the past
- 6:28Speaker 1: few days, how did that feel? How was that?
- 6:30Speaker 1: What did you, what did you wear for your school celebrations?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Let me know. 669-11987. Phone lines are open for your
- 6:37Speaker 1: dedications and song requests. I want to hear from you
- 6:41Speaker 1: and you can request any song you want to make
- 6:43Speaker 1: you feel a bit more energetic before you get to
- 6:45Speaker 1: school this morning. Thank you so much for joining me
- 6:47Speaker 1: here today. And we are going to read out a
- 6:50Speaker 1: couple of messages first because I just wanted to give
- 6:52Speaker 1: a big shout out. Quite a few of you texting
- 6:54Speaker 1: me this morning, saying that it's really, really hard to
- 6:57Speaker 1: wake up to go to school.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And um I also think that for some of the adults, uh,
- 7:04Speaker 1: it's not easy as well. Um, I want to say
- 7:07Speaker 1: hi here to Emily. You say, good morning, Sonia, missed
- 7:10Speaker 1: you at NDP this year, not the same without you. Oh,
- 7:13Speaker 1: thank you, Emily. That's really sweet of you. And you
- 7:16Speaker 1: also say, um I really enjoyed the performances, especially Sparkle
- 7:20Speaker 1: by Gareth, whom you had on your show not too
- 7:22Speaker 1: long ago.
- 7:23Speaker 1: And I'm like, yeah, you know what, Gareth did a
- 7:26Speaker 1: fantastic job on that, but so did the rest of them,
- 7:28Speaker 1: Jasmine Soko, Iman Fany, they did such a great job
- 7:31Speaker 1: on all the, all the songs and the performances and
- 7:34Speaker 1: not to mention that dog, that, that Goldie, right, that
- 7:38Speaker 1: was on screen as well, like how fantastic.
- 7:41Speaker 1: I mean, literally, I've never, I don't think that we've
- 7:44Speaker 1: ever seen a dog on national TV like that on
- 7:47Speaker 1: National Day, have we? I mean, I, I am not
- 7:50Speaker 1: sure if I recall entirely, but, um, you know, there's
- 7:53Speaker 1: a first time for everything, right? And I think it
- 7:56Speaker 1: sold the show 100%. And I'm a dog lover as well.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So here's hoping that over the long weekend too,
- 8:02Speaker 1: Um, there were quite a lot of, uh, dog adoption
- 8:06Speaker 1: drives or pet adoption drives that you managed to maybe
- 8:08Speaker 1: visit if you're thinking of having a dog as well, right,
- 8:11Speaker 1: or pets in general. So thank you for that, Emily.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I'm also saying hi over here, Anonymous. Hey, don't need
- 8:17Speaker 1: to say my name. Good morning. I just want to
- 8:19Speaker 1: say and commend you for being able to wake up
- 8:21Speaker 1: this morning to entertain all of us and to give
- 8:24Speaker 1: us the energy this morning.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Um, I really appreciate it. Hey, I appreciate you too.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Without our listeners, I would not be able to survive, OK,
- 8:32Speaker 1: with the weekend that we had, lots of celebrations.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Anyway, we're gonna head to the phone lines right now
- 8:36Speaker 1: to see who we have. Good morning. Hello. Good morning.
- 8:39Speaker 1: This is Evan. Hello, Evans. How are you today and
- 8:43Speaker 1: which school are you from? Andrew Junior. St. Andrew's Junior. OK.
- 8:47Speaker 1: What was your NDP weekend like? During the day, we
- 8:50Speaker 1: went to the party. You went to a party. OK,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I love that. Hope you have fun. What song can
- 8:56Speaker 1: I get you today then and who is it going
- 8:58Speaker 1: out to? Maybe to your friends.
- 9:00Speaker 1: My teachers. Your teachers. OK, what song can I get you?
- 9:04Speaker 1: The Road. The Road Ahead. OK, that's coming up just
- 9:06Speaker 1: for you from NDP 2021. And I really hope that
- 9:10Speaker 1: you enjoy it on air. OK? Have a great day.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Cats Eye, iconic by mistake. Wow, what a triple threat,
- 9:16Speaker 1: those girls right here on 987. Thank you for joining
- 9:19Speaker 1: me this morning. Um, just a very, very quick one
- 9:21Speaker 1: here before I move on to the story. I just
- 9:24Speaker 1: wanted to give a big shout out.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Um, someone actually sent me a message. You didn't leave
- 9:28Speaker 1: your name, but you said good morning. Wanted to give
- 9:30Speaker 1: a shout out to my niece, Kenne Lim of P6
- 9:34Speaker 1: Picun Public School because PSLE oral examinations begins for her
- 9:38Speaker 1: this week. So, if you are also taking your oral exams,
- 9:42Speaker 1: really wishing you all the best, fingers crossed. I know
- 9:45Speaker 1: PSLE season, right? It's, uh, it can be intimidating, but
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm confident you can do well.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Um, that applies to you too tuning in if you're
- 9:52Speaker 1: taking any sort of exams here. Very soon, um, us
- 9:55Speaker 1: here at 987 and Seosanan.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Um, specifically, myself and one of their DJs will be
- 10:00Speaker 1: dropping a, a video very soon to wish you good
- 10:04Speaker 1: luck for your PSLE oral exams, but we just want
- 10:07Speaker 1: to give, have some, have some fun with it, and um,
- 10:09Speaker 1: we did a little skit. So, can't wait for you
- 10:12Speaker 1: to see it. It's, it's almost like a half skit,
- 10:14Speaker 1: half real, real life, um, I would say reality video
- 10:18Speaker 1: because we took an oral examination, OK? Like for real,
- 10:22Speaker 1: we took an actual one from the past year.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And we actually tried it. So that's dropping very soon,
- 10:28Speaker 1: within this week, I'm sure, maybe even today actually. So,
- 10:30Speaker 1: look out for that on both 987 and Teo Sansan's platforms.
- 10:34Speaker 1: The collaboration you never thought you would see, right? Because
- 10:38Speaker 1: we did a few before that, it was quite entertaining. Anyway,
- 10:40Speaker 1: so I hope you enjoyed that one that will be
- 10:42Speaker 1: dropping soon. I'll reshare it on my own platforms too,
- 10:44Speaker 1: but anyway, earlier on, I was saying, you'll never guess
- 10:48Speaker 1: why this particular flight was canceled. Now, you would always think, OK,
- 10:51Speaker 1: maybe it's weather conditions or a faulty, a fault in
- 10:55Speaker 1: In the, the, the airplane or something serious, right? Well,
- 10:59Speaker 1: for this particular flight, um, it was canceled after a
- 11:03Speaker 1: toddler refused to put on a seatbelt and uh his
- 11:08Speaker 1: parents were unable to get him buckled. By then, I
- 11:12Speaker 1: think the passengers, you know, involved were, were just really frustrated,
- 11:17Speaker 1: I'm very sure.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Um, but according to news channels, the plane had already
- 11:21Speaker 1: left the terminal and was headed for the runway when
- 11:23Speaker 1: the crew member noticed this kid was standing in, in
- 11:26Speaker 1: his seat. So, the airline said they could not take
- 11:29Speaker 1: off in this condition. The child did not want to
- 11:31Speaker 1: get buckled, um, parents could not deal with the situation.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So they could not, they could not handle it at all,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and they considered it an unsafe condition.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So, I think the International Airport of Victoria has a
- 11:43Speaker 1: takeoff curfew of 12:30 a.m. This is um Victoria International Airport,
- 11:49Speaker 1: like I mentioned, and I think it's just their own rules,
- 11:53Speaker 1: so they couldn't take off after they didn't manage to
- 11:55Speaker 1: get this whole situation sorted. So, as a result, the
- 11:58Speaker 1: remaining passengers had to stay the night.
- 12:01Speaker 1: So which, which was very frustrated, frustrating for them, I'm sure.
- 12:05Speaker 1: They were rebooked onto the flight the following day, but
- 12:08Speaker 1: I think the airlines said, we're really, really sorry that
- 12:11Speaker 1: this had to affect the other passengers, but I'm just
- 12:14Speaker 1: very curious to know, like, how would you deal with
- 12:18Speaker 1: this situation? Like if you have any, anyone tuning in
- 12:21Speaker 1: right now that's part of an airline crew.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Um, have you ever encountered like a kid not wanting
- 12:26Speaker 1: to be buckled in, and if so, did a whole
- 12:28Speaker 1: flight get canceled because of that? I mean, of course,
- 12:31Speaker 1: this one had other reasons as well, right? Because of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the flight curfew, um, they don't allow flights to take
- 12:37Speaker 1: off after a certain time and all that. So, a
- 12:39Speaker 1: few conditions and issues combined resulted in the flight being
- 12:43Speaker 1: rescheduled entirely to the next day, but
- 12:46Speaker 1: How would you deal with this? If a toddler or
- 12:48Speaker 1: a kid refuses to be buckled in? I'm so curious
- 12:51Speaker 1: to know now. So if you know at all, or
- 12:53Speaker 1: if you work in an airline or Changi Airport, drop
- 12:56Speaker 1: me a text, 90050987. It's the Lisa of Blackpink. Of course,
- 13:02Speaker 1: this one features the likes of Doja Cat and Ray,
- 13:04Speaker 1: Born Again, right here on 987. I love the music
- 13:07Speaker 1: video actually, just three cool queens and icons doing their thing.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Anyway, welcome to Tuesday and welcome back after a very
- 13:14Speaker 1: long weekend, but hey, bonus is short work week, short
- 13:18Speaker 1: school week as well, um, and I'm sure that if
- 13:20Speaker 1: you are taking your PSLE oral examinations or if you're
- 13:24Speaker 1: a parent with a child that is taking a PSLE
- 13:27Speaker 1: oral examinations, you might be feeling a little bit of
- 13:30Speaker 1: the stress there, but hey, hugs, sending lots of love over.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Coming up in just a little bit, how much is
- 13:36Speaker 1: too much when it comes to Tai Fan again?
- 13:40Speaker 1: Now, when I posted something just two days ago for
- 13:44Speaker 1: National Day, I didn't expect the post to pop off,
- 13:46Speaker 1: but one of it was actually a picture of me
- 13:48Speaker 1: in a Tai Fan shop, and I did say like
- 13:50Speaker 1: our hawker food is elite, right? To which most people agreed,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and I think, you know, because in the spirit of
- 13:57Speaker 1: National Day, and we're feeling very patriotic and we love
- 13:59Speaker 1: our country very much too, right? Um, I had a
- 14:02Speaker 1: lot of response and people DMing me.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And they were saying, yes, hawker food is great, except
- 14:07Speaker 1: for this particular place that overcharges me sometimes.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Um, we'll address this in a, in a while because
- 14:14Speaker 1: I think this has got the internet a little split
- 14:17Speaker 1: over at the Punggol area. At just 22 years old,
- 14:21Speaker 1: kind of insane. I love his voice so much. I mean,
- 14:24Speaker 1: his style of music, it's like beyond his years. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: feel so chill, so soothing. What a great song to
- 14:29Speaker 1: listen to this morning. That one was actually called Asleep Talking.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Um, fun facts, Magnus Ferrell is the son of Will,
- 14:40Speaker 1: Will Ferrell, sorry. I'm saying his name wrongly this whole time.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Magnus Ferrell, because I'm like, oh, what was the, what
- 14:46Speaker 1: was the association? Will Ferrell, yes, now we're saying it right.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Magnus Ferrell. So he's actually the son of Will Ferrell. Yeah.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Wonder if um Magnus gets the A. So are you
- 14:55Speaker 1: funny too, like your dad? Did it, did you inherit his, uh,
- 14:58Speaker 1: his funny genes? Anyway, early on, I mentioned taking you
- 15:02Speaker 1: over to Punggol right now.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Where some complaints happened. This lady, uh, she went to
- 15:08Speaker 1: a taifan shop over at Punggol Hawker and said that
- 15:11Speaker 1: the taiwan was very expensive, $9 that she paid for
- 15:16Speaker 1: this particular Taifan meal. I wonder whether this was a
- 15:19Speaker 1: case of a misunderstanding, but here's what happened, OK? So,
- 15:22Speaker 1: she went over to get her usual Taifan order.
- 15:26Speaker 1: And apparently she ordered 4, I think it was 4
- 15:30Speaker 1: dishes and 1 porridge. So, she was with her daughter
- 15:34Speaker 1: and ordered a glass noodles with tofu, egg tofu, scrambled eggs,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and broccoli, well, lots of protein, uh, this lady is
- 15:42Speaker 1: bulking up or something. But she also asked for an
- 15:44Speaker 1: empty extra bowl to share the food with her daughter
- 15:47Speaker 1: because she was worried she wasn't going to be able
- 15:49Speaker 1: to finish it.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Then, she realized, hey, I was charged $9 which comprised
- 15:55Speaker 1: of $8 for the dishes and $1 for the porridge, right?
- 15:58Speaker 1: So she then compared it to the, to the price
- 16:01Speaker 1: list on the board and said, hey, even if you
- 16:03Speaker 1: calculate based on 4 ordinary dishes, it should only be
- 16:06Speaker 1: amounted to up to $7 maximum.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Upon questioning the staff, apparently they explained that they charged additional,
- 16:13Speaker 1: they charged an additional rate because they saw her eating
- 16:17Speaker 1: with her daughter, so they gave her bigger portions. That
- 16:20Speaker 1: was their reasoning. But her argument was, I didn't ask
- 16:24Speaker 1: for the extra portion.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Uh, maybe her daughter's a small eater, I don't know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: or they're both small eaters. So in her defense, she said,
- 16:30Speaker 1: I didn't ask for the bigger portion, so why did
- 16:32Speaker 1: you intentionally give me the bigger portion, then you charged
- 16:34Speaker 1: me some more. It's not like out of your own
- 16:36Speaker 1: goodwill or something, right? But I don't know whether this
- 16:39Speaker 1: was a case of like miscommunication, misunderstanding, because apparently, according
- 16:43Speaker 1: to the employee, um, they said they kind of heard
- 16:46Speaker 1: someone saying it's for two people, so that's why they
- 16:48Speaker 1: put it on.
- 16:49Speaker 1: So I don't know whether this lady was too quick
- 16:51Speaker 1: to complain and take to social media or, you know,
- 16:54Speaker 1: those citizen journalism websites to complain about it, but it
- 16:57Speaker 1: really sounds like for this particular employee in Saifan shop,
- 17:01Speaker 1: they remember their customers and their regulars, right? So, I
- 17:04Speaker 1: don't know, I'm on the fence about this. I think
- 17:06Speaker 1: social media is quite divided as well, whether it was
- 17:08Speaker 1: intentional or simply a case of a misunderstanding. But for
- 17:12Speaker 1: what it's worth, I love the Saifan shop near my
- 17:15Speaker 1: place at Sigla. Um, the portions are super generous and
- 17:19Speaker 1: Sometimes they have like unusual things that I like, like
- 17:22Speaker 1: pad Thai beans. I'm very Peranakan, I know. If you're
- 17:26Speaker 1: tuning in right now, if you don't even know what
- 17:27Speaker 1: pad Thai beans are, they're like very essential in Peranakan cooking,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and they're also known as smelly beans, I think. So,
- 17:35Speaker 1: similar to asparagus, um, and some other vegetables that might
- 17:39Speaker 1: be bitter, right?
- 17:41Speaker 1: People often, uh, split about it, and I know my
- 17:44Speaker 1: friends who like absolutely hate pad Thai beans, but this
- 17:48Speaker 1: one I love when they fry it up with, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 1: ikambilis and sambal, and I was 2 years old when
- 17:52Speaker 1: I realized Taylor Swift apparently likes to bake and not
- 17:57Speaker 1: just anything, she likes to bake sourdough bread, apparently, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: she sent, um, she sent Tate McCraye a homemade loaf
- 18:05Speaker 1: of sourdough bread before that was apparently amazing.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So I mean, look, we will never get to try it.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I'm very sure.
- 18:12Speaker 1: And even if Taylor Swift mass produced it, it will
- 18:14Speaker 1: no longer be a homemade loaf of sourdough bread, right?
- 18:17Speaker 1: It'll be mass-produced. So I'm guessing she's already sending it
- 18:19Speaker 1: to like her very, very close friends. I just wonder
- 18:22Speaker 1: how it's like to one day receive, you know, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 1: during COVID times where we were sending each other stuff,
- 18:27Speaker 1: like food items and all that, like my friends and
- 18:29Speaker 1: I would send each other things that we make and
- 18:31Speaker 1: we would drop it off or um maybe get a
- 18:34Speaker 1: delivery service or something to drop it off, right? So
- 18:37Speaker 1: it ranged from cupcakes, you know, baked goods to I
- 18:41Speaker 1: sent soup out.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Because I love making Chinese soup. Yeah, I'm a Chinese
- 18:45Speaker 1: auntie at heart. So I will send it out and
- 18:47Speaker 1: I'll complete it with, you know, like the condiments as well,
- 18:50Speaker 1: like the chili padi, the, the, the chives and whatever
- 18:54Speaker 1: it is that you need to top off your soup with.
- 18:57Speaker 1: So we did that and we're like, wow, we're chefs.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Then when COVID ended and we're done now, it's so busy.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I don't think I remember the last time I even
- 19:06Speaker 1: touched the kitchen.
- 19:08Speaker 1: I mean, aside from my small little National Day gathering
- 19:11Speaker 1: with some friends over the weekend, but aside from that
- 19:13Speaker 1: and very, very small groups and family, I don't really
- 19:16Speaker 1: do anything anymore in the kitchen. In fact, it's become
- 19:19Speaker 1: a bit of a storage area for other things and
- 19:22Speaker 1: it's getting super cluttered. I mean, yeah, reality hits, right?
- 19:26Speaker 1: Certainly does. So over the weekends, um, many things happened,
- 19:29Speaker 1: of course. We celebrate, celebrated National Day. I did it
- 19:31Speaker 1: here in Singapore because there's no place for home. You
- 19:34Speaker 1: can't go anywhere else but stay here, right?
- 19:36Speaker 1: And do your thing with your family, or friends or
- 19:39Speaker 1: whatever it is that you're usually up to. Yesterday, right
- 19:42Speaker 1: after the show, I immediately dashed down to the ferry
- 19:45Speaker 1: terminal to head down to Batam for a day of paddle.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I know, don't judge me.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You might be thinking like, oh, how obsessed are you?
- 19:54Speaker 1: But no, it was really like a social thing. Like
- 19:57Speaker 1: some of my friends went and my partner's friends went
- 19:59Speaker 1: as well. So together we formed a group and it's
- 20:02Speaker 1: um a new place over at, over in Batam itself.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And I cannot remember the last time I've been to Batam, OK?
- 20:09Speaker 1: I want to share my
- 20:10Speaker 1: Experience with you in just a while, including the long
- 20:13Speaker 1: queues and the crowd that we were met with on
- 20:17Speaker 1: our way back to Singapore. Honestly, I was this close
- 20:20Speaker 1: to texting boss Janice and saying like, my gosh, I
- 20:23Speaker 1: don't know if I can make it for the show
- 20:24Speaker 1: because what if I end up having to stay here overnight?
- 20:27Speaker 1: The situation was pretty bad. So early on, I was saying,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I did something that I've not done my entire life. OK, admittedly.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Um, I, I feel like a lot of my friends
- 20:38Speaker 1: have done this and experienced this already, which was take
- 20:41Speaker 1: a ferry to Batam, just enjoy the day or enjoy
- 20:44Speaker 1: the weekend and then come back, right? You know, you
- 20:46Speaker 1: go massage, you maybe, um, have a good seafood meal
- 20:50Speaker 1: or dinner or something, and you come back to Singapore.
- 20:52Speaker 1: But with the rise of like fitness-related retreats, OK, I know,
- 20:57Speaker 1: me plus fitness, we don't really gel, right? Like I'm
- 21:00Speaker 1: not known to be like a fitness girlie.
- 21:03Speaker 1: But, uh, I do enjoy a game of paddle as
- 21:05Speaker 1: you already know this, and I don't want to sound
- 21:07Speaker 1: like a broken tape recorder, but we're invited to go
- 21:10Speaker 1: check out this uh new paddle club in Batam, which
- 21:13Speaker 1: is the same one that I went to Bali like
- 21:15Speaker 1: a few months ago, if you recall that I was
- 21:17Speaker 1: telling Joakim about it on air as well, and he
- 21:19Speaker 1: was curious about it and asked if there were other stuff. So,
- 21:22Speaker 1: for this particular one over in Batam, so big shout
- 21:26Speaker 1: out to our friends over at Tao Paddle Academy, if
- 21:29Speaker 1: I'm not wrong, that's their entire name.
- 21:31Speaker 1: They are expanding pretty fast and this is not sponsored
- 21:33Speaker 1: at all. It's just we paid for it. So we
- 21:36Speaker 1: went uh with a bunch of friends. I think in total,
- 21:38Speaker 1: there were about like 15 or 16 of us, just,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you know, different small groups combined and if anyone was interested,
- 21:44Speaker 1: just come and join, right? And we made our trip
- 21:47Speaker 1: down and I realized that I've never been to Batam
- 21:50Speaker 1: for fun before. The only other time I went was
- 21:53Speaker 1: because of work. We had to film something there, and
- 21:55Speaker 1: that was the one and only time that I've been
- 21:58Speaker 1: to Batam.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I know. I'm so embarrassing as a Singaporean, like, uh,
- 22:03Speaker 1: I ran into so many Singaporeans though, of course, because
- 22:06Speaker 1: long weekend and all, right? But I think most of
- 22:08Speaker 1: them were already there for the weekend. I only went
- 22:11Speaker 1: for a day trip yesterday, so I ran into more
- 22:13Speaker 1: Singaporeans coming back. Going there, there were a lot of, um,
- 22:17Speaker 1: Indonesians and other people, you know, from Malaysia as well
- 22:21Speaker 1: that were going in, but not as many Singaporeans going
- 22:23Speaker 1: in yesterday morning.
- 22:25Speaker 1: So it's still OK, but coming back was quite a nightmare.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I mean, we, I guess we were a bit, uh,
- 22:33Speaker 1: we didn't expect the kind of crowd coming back. Yeah,
- 22:35Speaker 1: naive of us, I would say, right? To not expect
- 22:38Speaker 1: that kind of crowd and
- 22:40Speaker 1: When we were there, it was in total about 8 hours, uh,
- 22:44Speaker 1: or less actually, maybe, maybe 7 hours that we were
- 22:46Speaker 1: there in total, had lunch there, you know, we didn't
- 22:48Speaker 1: do any other wellness things. We didn't get to do
- 22:51Speaker 1: a massage or have a seafood meal or anything. It
- 22:53Speaker 1: was like play battle, eat lunch, um, play again, do
- 22:58Speaker 1: some recovery like ice punch and all, and then we
- 23:00Speaker 1: headed back immediately already. So, that to me, a little
- 23:03Speaker 1: bit short, especially because I was here for the show
- 23:05Speaker 1: in the morning yesterday.
- 23:07Speaker 1: But perhaps, you know, in the future, I would do
- 23:09Speaker 1: like maybe stay one night kind of situation, right? And
- 23:12Speaker 1: I think over in Batam, they're still kind of developing
- 23:14Speaker 1: the whole place. It has gotten fancier from the last
- 23:17Speaker 1: time I remember going there for work. Now they've got
- 23:20Speaker 1: more like restaurant chains, fast food chains, um, that, they're,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I think quite rapidly trying to build more resorts, uh,
- 23:28Speaker 1: more villas and things like that over in Batam. So,
- 23:31Speaker 1: got a lot of potential there. I'm very sure, a
- 23:33Speaker 1: lot of potential. I'll be posting more about my experience
- 23:35Speaker 1: very soon on
- 23:37Speaker 1: Um, maybe IGS. I'll share some stuff there. But in
- 23:39Speaker 1: the meantime, give me a call right now, 669-11987. Did
- 23:44Speaker 1: you experience, you know, short trips like that to Batam
- 23:48Speaker 1: as a kid growing up or even now as an adult?
- 23:50Speaker 1: Or do you fall in the category of Singaporeans that
- 23:53Speaker 1: you've never done a day trip or vacation over in
- 23:57Speaker 1: Batam before?
- 23:58Speaker 1: I mean, Phua Chu Kang and the whole era of PCK,
- 24:03Speaker 1: you know, glamorized Batam, right? Like Batam was name dropped
- 24:07Speaker 1: many times in, in the show. But now, I'm just curious,
- 24:10Speaker 1: how many of you grew up with going to Batam
- 24:13Speaker 1: for weekends or day trips?
- 24:14Speaker 1: And how many of you actually have never even set
- 24:17Speaker 1: foot in Batam before or you've never tried? Give me
- 24:20Speaker 1: a call, 669-11987. In exchange, a dining experience at Peppermint's
- 24:25Speaker 1: at Park Royal Collection, Marina Bay, Singapore. It's a halal
- 24:28Speaker 1: certified buffet restaurant, by the way, with signature seafood, lobster,
- 24:31Speaker 1: laksa Tower and a dessert spread.
- 24:34Speaker 1: That will leave you wanting more. This is worth $233.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Give me a call right now. Hey, um, talking about
- 24:40Speaker 1: Batam because I realized yesterday when I went for a
- 24:43Speaker 1: day trip that I've not been to Batam like my
- 24:46Speaker 1: entire life for fun. I've never been. I've only been
- 24:49Speaker 1: there for work once before and then I just never
- 24:52Speaker 1: did it again.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know why, because maybe my group
- 24:56Speaker 1: of friends and I, we just never, the, the, the,
- 24:59Speaker 1: the trip never made it out of the group chat,
- 25:01Speaker 1: you know, the only times the trips made it out
- 25:03Speaker 1: were for like someone's wedding or someone's like big birthday
- 25:07Speaker 1: bash overseas and typically that would be further away. No
- 25:10Speaker 1: one really had much experience going to Batam or like
- 25:13Speaker 1: any of my friends. Yeah, none of us had the experience,
- 25:15Speaker 1: so I guess it was just never really on our list.
- 25:17Speaker 1: But now that I've experienced it yesterday, I'm like, actually,
- 25:21Speaker 1: why haven't we been here sooner?
- 25:24Speaker 1: Why haven't we just made a trip and it's kind
- 25:26Speaker 1: of cheap to go up there, right? You buy a
- 25:28Speaker 1: ferry ticket, it beats boarding a plane and it's much faster,
- 25:32Speaker 1: and you can just stay there for one night, although
- 25:34Speaker 1: I just went there for a day trip. But I
- 25:35Speaker 1: wanted to ask you this question. Growing up, did you
- 25:38Speaker 1: experience going to Batam? You know, I think for Singaporeans,
- 25:41Speaker 1: a lot of us do, right? When I went there
- 25:43Speaker 1: and came back, I ran into so many Singaporeans, even
- 25:45Speaker 1: when we were in Batam, they were like, hey, Sonia,
- 25:47Speaker 1: what are you doing here?
- 25:48Speaker 1: Like, hey, can we take a picture? Like, oh, we're
- 25:50Speaker 1: going back. They're like, is that the DJ from 987?
- 25:53Speaker 1: Why is she, what is she doing here? Doesn't she
- 25:54Speaker 1: have a show tomorrow? But yes, I am, I did
- 25:58Speaker 1: show up in the morning here for the show, but, uh, very,
- 26:00Speaker 1: very tired, but no regrets because it was a lot
- 26:03Speaker 1: of fun just yesterday. I'm saying hi over here to QX.
- 26:07Speaker 1: You said, good morning, Sonia.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I, similar to you, never went to Batam growing up.
- 26:13Speaker 1: My family and I, we just never made it a tradition,
- 26:16Speaker 1: I guess. But I did go there for a girls
- 26:19Speaker 1: trip quite recently, just in 2025. Um, it was me
- 26:23Speaker 1: and three other girlfriends, and to be honest, we had
- 26:25Speaker 1: quite a fun time.
- 26:27Speaker 1: What you, you need to know is that the spa
- 26:29Speaker 1: and massages there are actually very, very affordable. You can
- 26:33Speaker 1: do your nails, you know, you can just go for
- 26:35Speaker 1: like a two-hour massage, you can have a nice meal
- 26:37Speaker 1: and then head back to Singapore. It was actually really
- 26:40Speaker 1: nice and relaxing and the pace of life seemed a
- 26:43Speaker 1: little slower, you know, you're more relaxed, you're more chill,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and it gave us a chance to just chat and
- 26:48Speaker 1: not do too much because it was just a one
- 26:51Speaker 1: night situation.
- 26:53Speaker 1: So we, we actually had a lot of fun and
- 26:54Speaker 1: I would 1010 go again. Oh, thank you so much, QX.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I mean, that, that's a great idea, right? Like I
- 27:00Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, much cheaper than a flight, much nearer, and
- 27:03Speaker 1: you just basically take a ferry. I have to say,
- 27:06Speaker 1: the ferry terminal, especially here in Singapore, has been massively upgraded.
- 27:10Speaker 1: In fact, when I went there, I was like, dude,
- 27:13Speaker 1: this looks like the airport.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Really? And I swear, even the signs they use, the
- 27:18Speaker 1: font is like similar to the airport font, and it
- 27:21Speaker 1: made me feel really like fancy when I was there.
- 27:25Speaker 1: When we come back, I'll head to the phone lines
- 27:27Speaker 1: very soon. We've got Paul waiting on the line as well,
- 27:31Speaker 1: and more of your messages, just sharing about my
- 27:33Speaker 1: Day trip experience to Batam, which is the first time
- 27:36Speaker 1: I've done that in my entire life. The only time
- 27:38Speaker 1: I've been to Batam was for, um, for a work trip.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So we went there filming for a few days and
- 27:43Speaker 1: then we came back. So I wouldn't say it was,
- 27:46Speaker 1: you know, I didn't go there to experience it with
- 27:47Speaker 1: my friends and stuff, which has been the case for
- 27:49Speaker 1: a lot of countries. I'll go like with the whole
- 27:53Speaker 1: video crew and um maybe some other people of the
- 27:56Speaker 1: media and sometimes I'm like, wow, I would love to
- 27:59Speaker 1: have experienced this, you know, with a loved one, right?
- 28:01Speaker 1: But of course, still very grateful for the chances to,
- 28:03Speaker 1: to go down. And for Battam, I mean, experiencing it
- 28:07Speaker 1: yesterday with friends, it was completely different. Saying hi here
- 28:10Speaker 1: to a few more people before I head to Paul
- 28:12Speaker 1: who's hanging on the line. B says, good morning, Sonia. Hey,
- 28:15Speaker 1: flying solo today? Yes, I am. Battam and I are
- 28:18Speaker 1: on a once-in a-decade agreement. The last time I was
- 28:22Speaker 1: there was back in 2016.
- 28:25Speaker 1: With a few of my girls to ambush another friend
- 28:27Speaker 1: who was living there. We made a proper weekend out
- 28:30Speaker 1: of it, spa, shopping, topped it all off with a
- 28:32Speaker 1: huge seafood dinner. It's officially been 10 years, so we're
- 28:36Speaker 1: actually planning the decade year anniversary reunion in a few months.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I was quite surprised you made this a topic today.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Such a coincidence. Ah, you left your name at the
- 28:45Speaker 1: end here, Bella. Thank you, Bella, for that. Yeah, I'm,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I'm surprised too because I, like I mentioned, it's not
- 28:51Speaker 1: something that I've experienced in my life and
- 28:53Speaker 1: Because I only could afford doing a day trip and
- 28:56Speaker 1: I had to be back for work today. We couldn't
- 28:58Speaker 1: stay like one night and you know, we tried to
- 29:00Speaker 1: make the, make it a long weekend situation because for
- 29:03Speaker 1: most of our friends, they didn't have work yesterday. So
- 29:06Speaker 1: everyone is back to business as usual this morning. So
- 29:09Speaker 1: that's why we made it only a day trip. But
- 29:11Speaker 1: thank you for sharing that, Bella. Um, I am definitely
- 29:14Speaker 1: gonna make another one very soon.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Make it a point actually, because it was what, like 6,
- 29:19Speaker 1: 70 to $80 to get the ferry ticket. I mean,
- 29:22Speaker 1: that's way cheaper than a flight for sure, right?
- 29:24Speaker 1: And so much faster too, like an hour ferry and
- 29:27Speaker 1: you're there, boom, you get to do whatever you want
- 29:29Speaker 1: to do. For me, it was a bit more wellness related.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I did paddle, I did cold plunge, and then just
- 29:34Speaker 1: came right back to Singapore. So I didn't get to
- 29:36Speaker 1: have that nice seafood meal or massage as recommended by
- 29:40Speaker 1: many of our listeners texting in for now. Paul is
- 29:43Speaker 1: on the line. OK, Paul, tell me, were, were you
- 29:46Speaker 1: the type that grew up going to Batam often or
- 29:49Speaker 1: not really? I've been there before, many years back, but
- 29:51Speaker 1: when I was there.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Um, that then was like the 1960s in Singapore. Oh, OK,
- 29:58Speaker 1: so it was so rustic and so, so, uh, vibes
- 30:01Speaker 1: of the olden era, uh, I think the jetty, in
- 30:05Speaker 1: the jetty there were people selling things and all this.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Now the bottom is different, totally different. Yeah, so you
- 30:10Speaker 1: haven't made a trip there in the recent years. Before COVID, uh, yes,
- 30:14Speaker 1: but after COVID, no. Based on my experience yesterday when
- 30:17Speaker 1: I went there, they are trying to develop it quite rapidly.
- 30:21Speaker 1: And I think it's a good thing, but anything that
- 30:23Speaker 1: you would recommend if I were to head there again?
- 30:25Speaker 1: Of course, the massage there is very, very nice and affordable. Uh,
- 30:30Speaker 1: I think the food there is also very authentic, uh,
- 30:34Speaker 1: Indonesian cuisine. If you ask me. I think it's more
- 30:39Speaker 1: of the food and the massage place-wise, uh, uh, give
- 30:43Speaker 1: it a pinch of salt la because very old rustic thing, right, then.
- 30:48Speaker 1: It will give you all the memories. But now everything
- 30:50Speaker 1: is moving so fast, you, you still have to go
- 30:53Speaker 1: back to the old days. I think it's like so funny. Yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I mean, but it's, it was interesting though, because even
- 30:59Speaker 1: though I went for like a paddle game, like paddle-related
- 31:02Speaker 1: thing there, and the facility, of course, is brand new,
- 31:04Speaker 1: the building is brand new and everything. So we literally
- 31:06Speaker 1: went from the ferry terminal there and we didn't really
- 31:08Speaker 1: get to experience things around the area, but just driving
- 31:12Speaker 1: through the streets, you are 100% right.
- 31:14Speaker 1: It's like Singapore in the 70s or something. It's a, yeah,
- 31:22Speaker 1: but it's a certain charm to it though, I have
- 31:23Speaker 1: to say, not something, yeah, not something that we really
- 31:26Speaker 1: see here anymore, so that could be interesting. A bit
- 31:29Speaker 1: more I would say. Yeah, yeah kampong everywhere in a
- 31:34Speaker 1: bit better now. You go, you go back there, you
- 31:36Speaker 1: tell me what you think now in 2026. Thank you
- 31:39Speaker 1: so much, Paul. You have a great day ahead, OK.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Talking about Batam, when was the last time you went there?
- 31:45Speaker 1: And did you grow up kind of with the tradition
- 31:46Speaker 1: with your family to just take a ferry, go down
- 31:49Speaker 1: and come back, you know, weekend trip kind of situation,
- 31:51Speaker 1: or do you fall in the category where you and
- 31:54Speaker 1: your family and friends have never been to Batam? Actually, admittedly,
- 31:57Speaker 1: that was me up until I had to go there
- 31:59Speaker 1: for work, and then yesterday I went there for a
- 32:01Speaker 1: day trip and I was wondering to myself like, hey,
- 32:03Speaker 1: how come I haven't done this sooner?
- 32:05Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, aside from the fact that the crowd
- 32:08Speaker 1: coming back was a bit uh a bit crazy, like
- 32:11Speaker 1: there was really too many people, but I attributed it
- 32:13Speaker 1: to the fact that it was a long weekend after all,
- 32:16Speaker 1: so there's really a surge of people. You have to
- 32:18Speaker 1: have some patience there and um I would say if
- 32:21Speaker 1: I had to do it again, I might bring a mask,
- 32:24Speaker 1: because there was really like thousands of people like clamoring,
- 32:27Speaker 1: so it was quite, yeah, quite claustrophobic to some extent,
- 32:30Speaker 1: but other than that, I had a good time.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Say hi to SL. You said, I'm probably one of
- 32:35Speaker 1: the rare ones who have not been to Batam. Um,
- 32:39Speaker 1: people who have been there always talk about massage, Makan
- 32:41Speaker 1: and ku lapis. OK. Not quite the things on my
- 32:45Speaker 1: list for list for a break. In fact, last year
- 32:48Speaker 1: was my first time to Bintan my entire life. Oh, wow.
- 32:53Speaker 1: I mean, I've been to Bintan before and I think
- 32:55Speaker 1: Bintan has developed a lot as well. There are a
- 32:57Speaker 1: lot of big hotel chains there now, and then there's
- 33:00Speaker 1: even the glamping kind of stuff and
- 33:03Speaker 1: Yeah, quite cool resorts and water parks and things that
- 33:06Speaker 1: have developed over the years. So I'm not surprised that
- 33:09Speaker 1: more Singaporeans will be heading there.
- 33:10Speaker 1: OK, when we come back, we've got Angeline hanging on
- 33:13Speaker 1: the line, so please stick around and what's at stake
- 33:15Speaker 1: here is a buffet experience for 20, this is worth
- 33:19Speaker 1: over $200. Talking about a trip to Batam. Yes, I
- 33:23Speaker 1: did my first day trip to Batam ever in my
- 33:26Speaker 1: whole life yesterday to play paddle and do uh wellness things,
- 33:30Speaker 1: but there was not enough time because after my show
- 33:33Speaker 1: went there, did
- 33:34Speaker 1: Who paddle stuff and then some recovery and then came
- 33:36Speaker 1: right back. Like we didn't even get to do massage
- 33:38Speaker 1: or eat any local food there. We just ate within
- 33:41Speaker 1: the paddle facility. Now, if you're curious about it, I
- 33:44Speaker 1: will be posting it on IGS very soon because I
- 33:46Speaker 1: think um quite a number of my friends have, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: been asking like, hey, how, how did this thing go? Like,
- 33:51Speaker 1: was it really a day trip? Was it feasible? Like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: would I want to stay a day? I'll share more
- 33:56Speaker 1: about it on IGS later on this morning.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Um, and you can decide for yourself if you want
- 34:00Speaker 1: to go. Gonna say hi over here to Maddie. You say,
- 34:03Speaker 1: good morning, Sonia. Happy solo show. I kind of grew
- 34:07Speaker 1: up in Batam actually. Back then when I was young,
- 34:10Speaker 1: my dad's company actually opened up a factory there. So
- 34:12Speaker 1: every school holiday, we will spend the whole holiday in Batam.
- 34:16Speaker 1: It was fun though, because there are a lot of
- 34:18Speaker 1: wild dogs and they have puppies and everything. Unfortunately, due
- 34:22Speaker 1: to the economy, my dad had to shut it down.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I saw our photos from there before growing up. It
- 34:28Speaker 1: was surely good memories. Oh, Maddie, thank you so much
- 34:31Speaker 1: for sharing that with me. I mean, I would love
- 34:33Speaker 1: to see these photos and um, you know, based off
- 34:36Speaker 1: those childhood memories, I think it really shapes you for
- 34:39Speaker 1: who you are. Growing up there must be pretty different, right?
- 34:42Speaker 1: When you spend your holidays there and then, you know, my,
- 34:44Speaker 1: my friends as well would tell me, oh, they're going
- 34:46Speaker 1: to Japan or they're going to, I don't know, these countries,
- 34:48Speaker 1: and I never actually traveled as a kid.
- 34:51Speaker 1: Till I was in, I don't know, maybe when I
- 34:54Speaker 1: was 1615 or 16, actually, yeah. That's my first time
- 34:58Speaker 1: traveling because we just never had much time and, and,
- 35:01Speaker 1: and funds as well back then, right? So, very grateful
- 35:05Speaker 1: for any chance possible to travel when I was a kid.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Angeline is on the line. Um, we don't have that
- 35:11Speaker 1: much time left, but we're gonna squeeze you right in. Angeline,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I know that you've got a good story here. Tell me.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Your experience in Batam, did you grow up experiencing that?
- 35:20Speaker 1: Batam
- 35:20Speaker 2: is
- 35:20Speaker 2: not my usual travel destination, but I think I've been
- 35:23Speaker 2: there probably about twice in my whole life of 30 years,
- 35:27Speaker 2: and both times with family. So I think the most
- 35:30Speaker 2: recent one was about 1 year ago where the whole
- 35:32Speaker 2: extended family, including my grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins
- 35:37Speaker 2: and younger kids joined. There was probably almost 20 of us.
- 35:41Speaker 2: 20 of
- 35:41Speaker 2: you,
- 35:41Speaker 1: wow.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Hold on, how did you guys, like, how did you
- 35:46Speaker 1: even manage to usher so many people there? I mean,
- 35:48Speaker 1: they're old folks as well,
- 35:49Speaker 2: right? Yeah, I think
- 35:50Speaker 2: with the grandparents, it's very easy to get all the
- 35:52Speaker 2: aunts and uncles to go as a whole family trip.
- 35:55Speaker 2: So I think last trips like this is not easy
- 35:57Speaker 2: on the flight. So Pasan really makes it more possible
- 36:00Speaker 2: and easier on the ferry.
- 36:02Speaker 1: You're so right, you know, because I did see a
- 36:04Speaker 1: lot of going on.
- 36:05Speaker 1: You know, the elderly and stuff, and it's so much
- 36:07Speaker 1: easier for them. Like you don't have to really check
- 36:10Speaker 1: in your luggage or anything. I mean, everyone's just carrying
- 36:13Speaker 1: like a day bag, right? It was a lot simpler,
- 36:16Speaker 1: I would say.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the resort also makes it very comfortable
- 36:19Speaker 2: for us, like the older ones, the grandparents and all,
- 36:22Speaker 2: they can like chill at the beach with a drink,
- 36:25Speaker 2: and then the younger ones can go and have fun
- 36:27Speaker 2: at the water activity.
- 36:28Speaker 2: And then we can still do our shopping, do our massage,
- 36:31Speaker 2: have a good family time at the restaurant. I think
- 36:34Speaker 2: the next trip with the whole group of family is
- 36:36Speaker 2: probably up to Gensing, probably like 33 or 4 cars
- 36:40Speaker 2: up together this year in, oh, just next month in September.
- 36:43Speaker 2: We have planned it for the school holidays.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Nice, nice. Wow, I really envy that. Thank you so
- 36:49Speaker 1: much for sharing the love with us.
- 36:50Speaker 1: And uh please send me a photo of you and
- 36:53Speaker 1: your family, OK? Oh, I didn't expect to get so
- 36:55Speaker 1: much response about going to Batam for a day trip yesterday.
- 36:59Speaker 1: If I saw you there or if you spotted me, hi,
- 37:02Speaker 1: and if we didn't get to say hi, some of
- 37:04Speaker 1: you actually came up to be like, hey, like what
- 37:06Speaker 1: are you doing here? I'm like, yeah, I went up
- 37:08Speaker 1: for a day trip for a paddle game, um, and, and,
- 37:11Speaker 1: and then some wellness and all.
- 37:13Speaker 1: But today's prize officially goes to Maddie, congratulations. Thank you
- 37:18Speaker 1: for sharing your story with me. If you want to
- 37:20Speaker 1: catch up with all our lovely listeners' stories about Batam
- 37:23Speaker 1: or not having been to Batam before, either way, right? Um,
- 37:27Speaker 1: you can actually catch it on Me Listen and Spotify,
- 37:30Speaker 1: but Maddie, what you're walking away with is an experience
- 37:32Speaker 1: for two at Peppermints at Park Royal Collection, Marina Bay,
- 37:36Speaker 1: worth 20.
- 37:37Speaker 1: $33. This is a halal certified buffet restaurant and you
- 37:40Speaker 1: can enjoy grilled meats, seafood, Asian international dishes. I think
- 37:45Speaker 1: their signature seafood lobster laksa Tower is one of their signatures.
- 37:49Speaker 1: So please visit them. Park Royal Collection, Marina Bay on Instagram.
- 37:52Speaker 1: All this week, you stand to win. Now, as you
- 37:55Speaker 1: would know, based off a few months ago, you would
- 37:57Speaker 1: know about these machines called the return right machines, right?
- 38:01Speaker 1: And if you're not quite sure what it is, not
- 38:03Speaker 1: to worry.
- 38:04Speaker 1: They actually are meant to collect drink bottles and cans
- 38:08Speaker 1: for recycling, OK? So, this, of course, the intention is there. It's,
- 38:12Speaker 1: it's good intentions only and we're hoping that we move
- 38:15Speaker 1: forward to a bit more of a sustainable society, right? Um,
- 38:18Speaker 1: I'm not paid to say this at all, OK? I
- 38:20Speaker 1: just agree that you should put things in the right places,
- 38:24Speaker 1: especially when it comes to recycling.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Now, here are the things that were found in some
- 38:28Speaker 1: of these return right machines that are not meant to
- 38:30Speaker 1: be there, so they could quite return wrong because these
- 38:33Speaker 1: items should not be in there. They could mess up
- 38:36Speaker 1: the recycling process for the bottles and cans and so on. Um,
- 38:39Speaker 1: things like slippers, an umbrella.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Even a Nerf gun foam bullets, electronics charging case, these
- 38:48Speaker 1: are the things that were found disposed in the return
- 38:51Speaker 1: ride machines. So they're saying that these, um, open inverted commas, inappropriate,
- 38:56Speaker 1: wrong items can cause major disruptions and it will inconvenience
- 39:00Speaker 1: people who are waiting to recycle as well.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Um, so other litter, you know, and other things were
- 39:05Speaker 1: found as well, things like plastic wrappers, plastic cups, uh,
- 39:09Speaker 1: many other random items. I don't know, people like throw
- 39:12Speaker 1: their stuff in there, like their coffee cup, their soft
- 39:15Speaker 1: drink cups and all that. Um, this is just quite
- 39:18Speaker 1: sad to see, you know, and some of these photos
- 39:20Speaker 1: were taken and shared on news platforms as well. Um,
- 39:24Speaker 1: quite disappointing to see this behavior. I think people often
- 39:27Speaker 1: go like, oh, hey, this looks like a dustbin, I'll
- 39:30Speaker 1: just chuck it here.
- 39:32Speaker 1: So, FYI, it, it was launched a couple of months ago,
- 39:36Speaker 1: and I think over 1000 return right machines were placed
- 39:39Speaker 1: across Singapore to make sure that there's a clean stream
- 39:42Speaker 1: of high quality materials that can be recycled. So let's
- 39:45Speaker 1: just do it right, guys. I mean, I just feel
- 39:48Speaker 1: so bad for the people that have to go in
- 39:49Speaker 1: and manually sort these things out. I mean, that's going
- 39:53Speaker 1: to take so much time and effort to, and, and
- 39:55Speaker 1: I really feel for them. So.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Let's just try to be a bit more mindful, I guess,
- 39:59Speaker 1: you know, sometimes, yeah, maybe it could be a mistake,
- 40:01Speaker 1: like we see, oh, recycling bin, just throw what you
- 40:03Speaker 1: would usually throw in the recycling bin, but
- 40:05Speaker 1: Now there are quite a few things to take note of.
- 40:07Speaker 1: And I was so curious about this because, you know,
- 40:11Speaker 1: everyone was talking about, oh, in a good or a
- 40:14Speaker 1: bad way. Everyone was talking about this AI film that
- 40:18Speaker 1: was released on National Day itself, right, on the 9th
- 40:20Speaker 1: of August. And uh this was honestly, it left people
- 40:24Speaker 1: really divided. I think half the people were curious about
- 40:28Speaker 1: what Trey's project was going to be like and the
- 40:30Speaker 1: other half was like, ain't no way I'm gonna.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Pay to watch an AI slop. That's what I saw
- 40:34Speaker 1: a lot of the sentiment on social media. So, some
- 40:36Speaker 1: of the, the news channels and, you know, some publications
- 40:41Speaker 1: actually reported about it, and I think one or two
- 40:43Speaker 1: of their writers actually went down to take a look
- 40:46Speaker 1: at the film, and they, they paid like over $20
- 40:49Speaker 1: to get a seat there. Apparently, half the people that
- 40:51Speaker 1: were invited and the other 50% paid for their tickets.
- 40:54Speaker 1: It is unsure or it's unclear whether the entire cinema
- 40:57Speaker 1: was sold out, but it is their one and only screening.
- 41:01Speaker 1: OK, one and only screening. And overall right now, the
- 41:05Speaker 1: people who have watched it left very bad reviews. Apparently,
- 41:10Speaker 1: it felt lackluster. It was underwhelming. Um, the plot of
- 41:14Speaker 1: the movie was meant to be inspiring, but allegedly the
- 41:17Speaker 1: AI generated visuals and the approach really undermined the whole story.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I can't judge because I didn't watch it.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Um, but the pacing of the movie felt very quick,
- 41:27Speaker 1: so I'm guessing not much. I mean, for me, I'm
- 41:29Speaker 1: a film student, right? So a character arc is very
- 41:32Speaker 1: important for me, but people are saying too many disruptive
- 41:35Speaker 1: jump cuts, inadequate, um, exposition, really lacked any narrative structure,
- 41:41Speaker 1: lots of plot holes to be filled, detrimental in establishing
- 41:45Speaker 1: its protagonist. Oh, man, and the protagonist's name is actually
- 41:49Speaker 1: Lin Jiajun.
- 41:51Speaker 1: In other words, JJ Lin.
- 41:55Speaker 1: I literally just noticed that. I don't know if anyone
- 41:57Speaker 1: picked that up, but Lin Jia Chun literally is JJ Lin. Guys,
- 42:01Speaker 1: I mean, come on, we can do better, right? Um,
- 42:03Speaker 1: apparently at some points, he would bear the Singapore flag
- 42:06Speaker 1: on his sleeves when he was on Mars, but the
- 42:08Speaker 1: flag would frequently show mistakes, which to me is a shock,
- 42:12Speaker 1: I would say. I mean, the fact that you want
- 42:14Speaker 1: to screen it on National Day, I mean, at least
- 42:16Speaker 1: get that right, right? Um, apparently the portrayal of the
- 42:19Speaker 1: characters was also, also unnatural.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Um, you know, mispronunciation of words, and perhaps it was
- 42:25Speaker 1: just trying a little bit too hard. I think some
- 42:28Speaker 1: of the writers and journalists that went down trying to
- 42:30Speaker 1: interview people saying, oh, it was so unnatural, um, even
- 42:33Speaker 1: the AI was very non-human like, and it was distracting
- 42:36Speaker 1: all the way.
- 42:36Speaker 1: So I was very curious because I wondered how much
- 42:40Speaker 1: it was to produce a movie like that, right? And
- 42:42Speaker 1: the producers, uh, Fizz Dragon, which is a Singapore-based AI studio,
- 42:46Speaker 1: and I do have mixed feelings because on one hand,
- 42:49Speaker 1: you want to support Loo. On the other hand, maybe
- 42:51Speaker 1: they rushed to release this one too quickly. Allegedly, it
- 42:54Speaker 1: cost about 200K to produce. I don't know whether this
- 42:57Speaker 1: is verified because I couldn't find any um information on
- 43:00Speaker 1: the proper news channels, but this is an estimation.
- 43:03Speaker 1: So where will this go? I mean, fingers crossed, they're
- 43:07Speaker 1: on to better work next time and they learn from this.
- 43:09Speaker 1: And once again, disclaimer, I didn't watch it, so I
- 43:12Speaker 1: can't for sure say that these are the thoughts that
- 43:15Speaker 1: are reflected across everyone, but it did seem like that, unfortunately. Now,
- 43:20Speaker 1: like I mentioned earlier, I did not know that this
- 43:22Speaker 1: was going on.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Um, over at the Fernvale area, just so much love
- 43:27Speaker 1: coming through thanks to an organization called Food Rescue Sengkang.
- 43:31Speaker 1: They organized a sunset bread rescue. Now, before you chuckle
- 43:36Speaker 1: and wonder what is sunset Bread Rescue, this is to
- 43:39Speaker 1: curb food wastage, OK. So what, what volunteers do is
- 43:42Speaker 1: that they rescue unsold baked goods to share with the community.
- 43:46Speaker 1: So the volunteers would actually go and collect all these cakes, pastries,
- 43:50Speaker 1: unsold bread that would actually otherwise be discarded or thrown away.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Um, because expiry, right? So then they'll share it with
- 43:56Speaker 1: um lots of people over in the area. Queues and
- 43:59Speaker 1: queues of people actually were seen collecting bread and they
- 44:03Speaker 1: did say every loaf rescued represents one less item sent
- 44:06Speaker 1: to the landfill and one more family that's able to
- 44:08Speaker 1: stretch out their grocery budget a little bit further.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So, it's very heartwarming to see um lots of people
- 44:13Speaker 1: just coming together to help. That, that's why I mentioned
- 44:16Speaker 1: they need volunteers, right? Food Rescue Sengkang actually started in 2019,
- 44:20Speaker 1: and I thought that what they shared on social media
- 44:22Speaker 1: was actually very meaningful. They said, what makes us different?
- 44:25Speaker 1: Many people think that food rescue is simply collecting surplus
- 44:28Speaker 1: food and giving it away, but for us, that's only
- 44:30Speaker 1: the surface, it's only the beginning. It's a circular ecosys.
- 44:33Speaker 1: System where every resource is respected and every effort is
- 44:37Speaker 1: made to keep waste out of our landfills. Things like
- 44:40Speaker 1: edible food is shared with the community, inedible fruits and
- 44:43Speaker 1: vegetables are actually transformed into nutrient-rich soil. Gosh, I didn't
- 44:47Speaker 1: know that. Cardboard boxes are then recycled instead of being discarded,
- 44:51Speaker 1: and we have a lot of young volunteers and kids
- 44:54Speaker 1: learning about sustainability by having this.
- 44:56Speaker 1: hands-on experience. To us, every rescued item represents the land, water, energy,
- 45:02Speaker 1: and hard work that went into producing it. Throwing it
- 45:04Speaker 1: away means wasting far more than just food. I really
- 45:08Speaker 1: love that. Guys, I mean, I, I never knew of
- 45:11Speaker 1: this organization till now. Hopefully, us giving them a shout
- 45:14Speaker 1: out on air helps them garner more volunteers and more
- 45:17Speaker 1: attention as well, so that people just know how to
- 45:21Speaker 1: contribute in the right ways. So lots of love, guys,
- 45:24Speaker 1: you're doing a really good job.
