- 0:00Hello and welcome to not the retail Podcast, The five Things
- 0:03Friday, where we take a look at the top of mind areas, issues,
- 0:11content companies, activities that we'll be doing.
- 0:14I'm Alex you you may have seen the retail podcast and I'm
- 0:18fortunate enough to be joined by.
- 0:19I am Laura, I am a Scottish lassie and I'm based over the
- 0:24other side of the world in Australia.
- 0:26Why don't you start and then I'll I'll take take it.
- 0:29After you, one of the things I went to an event this week in
- 0:33Sydney, it was with Clavio where you see it, It was called K
- 0:37Sydney. So it was a big kind of product.
- 0:39You know, it was a big event where they're talking about the
- 0:42product and they've got some speakers up and they released a
- 0:46report, which, Alex, I think you have it.
- 0:50So, yeah, absolutely. Here it is.
- 0:52Yeah. So full credit to them.
- 0:54Very, very right. Yeah.
- 0:57We're a couple, James. Is it Jim and Herman?
- 0:59Yeah, there's a couple of people and I think overdose was a
- 1:02couple of and and Zen a couple of people involved.
- 1:05But it really looked at 1.7 million customers, 1.2 billion
- 1:09spend. I must say.
- 1:12The caveat is this is focused a wee bit more towards that
- 1:15fashion. But yeah, it was kind of
- 1:18something that's been bugging me I guess for the last year.
- 1:21Is this real big focus on retention, retention, retention?
- 1:26And I guess we know that we know retention is important and I
- 1:30think everyone's been looking at as ways to save money to get
- 1:35more bang from the buck. But this report is kind of like
- 1:39debunking that myth. So it's really giving a bit of a
- 1:43like the whole, we all say this kind of line that's like, you
- 1:49know, it's five times more expensive to acquire a a new
- 1:53customer than an existing. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:56Yeah. And this report basically says
- 1:58that's not true at all. And actually all the findings
- 2:03that they were saying was reporting to a lot of retailers
- 2:06that really dig into that retention model, they see a
- 2:09little bit of a decline in revenue.
- 2:12And it's all about just finding ways to service whoever is in
- 2:16front of you at the time. And lots more focus should be on
- 2:20that kind of cross sell upsell rather than retention as such.
- 2:26So retention's a little bit your math and it was a really good,
- 2:32good report. What would you just I'm so
- 2:34curious with that because that goes like naturally against
- 2:37everything. I'm thinking what's the what's
- 2:40the basis on that that will got it loan?
- 2:45Well, I think it's been retention, like kind of
- 2:48retention and loyalty, right. So everyone's so the loyalty
- 2:51programmes and I think it comes back to like loyalty as such a
- 2:56big theme. It's not just a loyalty
- 2:59programme, it's not a point system.
- 3:01So I think it has to be looking at given value, whether it be
- 3:06retained or otherwise. So it really kind of starts to
- 3:10hit on a few a few different aspects now.
- 3:13I think when I looked at it, some of the gaps could
- 3:17potentially challenges this was looked at revenue, you know,
- 3:21against maybe that profit and margin piece.
- 3:24But I definitely feel it's like in the right track, right, where
- 3:28it's really about giving people the best customer service
- 3:33experience. And you want to retain, you want
- 3:38to retain your customers, but don't focus too much on that
- 3:41retention piece because you could have a routine customer,
- 3:44right? But over what's the lifetime
- 3:46value that customer? So a lot more focus on whoever
- 3:50is there, give them what they will love, good love to do.
- 3:55What's a big part of the message I heard?
- 3:58And it kind of came back to a bit of that theme, right?
- 4:02It's back to loyalty programmes. They work when they work when
- 4:08they're really unified into a business strategy on how you
- 4:11think about loyalty from clienteling to, you know, VIP,
- 4:17whatever you're doing there. It's all-encompassing.
- 4:21And we should talk to talk about them in really niche lanes.
- 4:26It starts, it starts to not work.
- 4:28So yeah, I think the the the best thing I think for me as
- 4:32well was we need to stop saying that a new customer costs five
- 4:37times more. It's more about the right
- 4:40customer and keeping the right customer and sometimes retention
- 4:47after have you assess them after a year maybe they're not the
- 4:50right customers to retain. So it's a kind.
- 4:53Of yeah, which I think is what the point here it was making in
- 4:56terms of the cross sell and up sell thing that you said.
- 4:59But OK, look, interesting report.
- 5:02I I, it's it's one of those that you sort of hear Rango, really
- 5:05are you just being are you just saying that?
- 5:07And then I guess when you look at the data points in here to
- 5:11say what what is and how you you, you do that right.
- 5:15And it's it's yeah, it's cool. OK, cool.
- 5:20What? What's your second one?
- 5:22Right, my second one, I'm actually unified commerce.
- 5:26It's kind of bugged me for a long time.
- 5:29You know, what is it? Is it a buzzword?
- 5:33Is it a business strategy? I I would say it's a really
- 5:36important business strategy. I think what it has to be
- 5:40defined by the retailers themselves.
- 5:43So I was listening to she was pretty amazing.
- 5:46Her name is Emily Feifer from Forrester and she she was
- 5:52talking about it and she was kind of saying that it's not a
- 5:55thing. And the reason it's not a thing
- 5:57is because there's no shared definition of what it is.
- 6:01However, there is a great value and unification, right?
- 6:05Whereas the likes of Shopify will say no as a thing, you
- 6:10know, as and I guess I'm kind of set in the middle of the two of
- 6:15the worlds. Like if you were a retailer who
- 6:18came out seven years ago or, you know, round up at that time and
- 6:22you used Shopify, like that was your base.
- 6:25That was, you know, you were all in, you were going to go to the
- 6:27point of sale. Yeah, unified commerce can be a
- 6:31real thing right now for you. A lot of it really to me, the
- 6:35ideally unified commerce is a it's really good more modular,
- 6:39fewer vendors and fewer, fewer moving PCs and the idea of like
- 6:45a shorter time to value. And also I think the one, one
- 6:49thing she said as well when I was listening to her reading
- 6:51what she'd wrote was a lot of vendors have kind of ruined us a
- 6:56wee bit because you'll see unified commerce everywhere.
- 7:00It's really important to ask the how question like how do you
- 7:04unify? You know, because I would say
- 7:06that it's more the infrastructure to get you to
- 7:09Omni channel. And that's I feel is really it's
- 7:13not been very well even me articulated, but I would say
- 7:17that unified commerce is as more the architecture and the way you
- 7:21go to market. And it's about like, you know,
- 7:24looking at the platform, we've always been trying to do unified
- 7:29commerce. Who wouldn't want to have a
- 7:32unified, you know? Channel of strategy.
- 7:35Yeah, absolutely. Where your data talks to each
- 7:38other lovely, you know, and you can modules here and there and
- 7:43the work of one UI. Everyone has been this isn't
- 7:47new. We've all been moving to this.
- 7:49This is not a new thing. What has happened is we went
- 7:53through this Shopify, you know the boom and we went from model
- 7:58of best and breed tech. So we went down let's get all
- 8:02the best and and breed tech. Now what's happening is all
- 8:07those they were small to medium sized tech companies, they're
- 8:10starting to mature and now they're going into that
- 8:13consolidation mode. So now they're kind of coming
- 8:16back to where we were before in the sales force days where it's
- 8:20more about you. I guess it's like you want them
- 8:23best in breed for their core function, but you will not have
- 8:28them best in breed for the other.
- 8:30The other areas that really complement and it's coming back
- 8:35to making the retailer's life easier as well with the end
- 8:38user. So it's a lot now, the UI, the
- 8:41underlying data channel, unifying the best way possible.
- 8:47I think though, this is our conversation.
- 8:50It depends. It depends, right?
- 8:52It's if you're a big retailer, we're big problems and lots of
- 8:57tech and lots of teams get into one.
- 9:01You know that Nirvana of single view customer and unifying
- 9:04everything is a journey. So yeah, so it.
- 9:09It was, it's more architecture. I, I hear you.
- 9:11I get what you're saying in terms of it's a sort of cyclical
- 9:14thing that people are sort of coming back into and having this
- 9:18or trying to create a single view.
- 9:19Yeah. And, and I think it's like
- 9:21businesses have to have really strong leadership teams that
- 9:24take these concepts and define them for what is right for them
- 9:28and where they can get to. And you know, because again and
- 9:33again, I'm not just, if you start and Shopify and you put
- 9:36the pause and you use that, Oh my God, that that could be
- 9:39pretty beautiful, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 9:42If you're using a big complex point of sale because it really
- 9:45suits your business and you're not willing to move to that or
- 9:48it doesn't suit your business, then that unification pro, you
- 9:53know, you can get there, but there's probably going to be a
- 9:55couple of different UIS and bumps.
- 9:57So yeah, like where can you unify?
- 9:59I'd say as the first point pack, pack the biggest thing and it's
- 10:04a bit that consolidation attack consult, it's shorter time to
- 10:09value, right? This is what we're looking for.
- 10:11We're not looking for big 18 month projects anymore.
- 10:14It's simplifying. It's meeting the user, that user
- 10:18interface, you know, and working off permissions.
- 10:22And that's the thing as well. Don't just a tech I think that
- 10:26talks to other techs. That's not unification, right?
- 10:32Yeah. Yeah, Yeah, it is.
- 10:33But it's more like to me unified commerce is your platform is,
- 10:38you know, you have the One UI and it's easy, a modular plug in
- 10:42and the data behind it all can talk to each other seamlessly.
- 10:46So that was, to be honest, it's took me a while to get my head
- 10:49round unified commerce and I spent a wee bit of time this
- 10:52week and I feel, you know, embarrassed to say that, but
- 10:56that's the truth. And I think if I'm saying last,
- 10:59probably feel confused. So I'm cheating a little bit,
- 11:03right? Because I've got two things that
- 11:05I'm going to talk about and four things that I'm not going to
- 11:08talk about, right. So the, the thing that I'm not
- 11:11going to talk about is a gentic AI because I, I interviewed some
- 11:16one of the execs from Microsoft. I said I'm not going to talk
- 11:19about it. So I'm not going to talk about
- 11:20it. I'll do my two Sunday sporting
- 11:23club. I don't know if you've got this
- 11:24as a trend in and I'm, I'm pretty sure because you guys are
- 11:27all pretty healthy, but Wellness and health based social
- 11:31experiences and what we're finding specifically in the UK
- 11:36and now coming into Europe is this sort of replacing
- 11:41traditional alcohol based focused gatherings, right?
- 11:45So people aren't meeting up to go for a beer, they're meeting
- 11:47up to go to Pilates. And, and it is, you know,
- 11:50whether it's restaurants or bars, it's another way for, for
- 11:54people to get together to put their mobiles aside and to do
- 11:57something. The reason why I've chosen
- 11:59Sunday Sporting Club, obviously, this is the future of luxury
- 12:03Wellness. And so when you go, when you go
- 12:06to their socials, you go from the sort of corporate to what
- 12:10brands are getting right or what they're getting wrong is
- 12:13lifestyle aspirational. And in a time where budgets are
- 12:18reducing. I think, you know, I, I talk
- 12:21about this in, in, in the stuff that I put out there, but the
- 12:25world is fracturing into these two sorts of systems of
- 12:28consumer, you know, aspirational shoppers and luxury shoppers.
- 12:34And you can see what they've done really, really well is this
- 12:37sort of aspirational social community that's supposedly, you
- 12:42know, when I was reading the thing, it's not pretentious,
- 12:44it's really human. You know, it's not meant for me.
- 12:48I get it, but it, it, it's just, I think this is a, a small
- 12:52glimpse into a, an area of what there is to come in a, in a, an
- 12:59in a subculture. And you know, there's like
- 13:02running there's there's so many different examples of these sort
- 13:05of well, health based social subculture clubs that are
- 13:10emerging. And I think these guys girls
- 13:13probably do. If I'm hoping it's girls, I
- 13:16should have checked that one up are doing a a cracking job at at
- 13:22doing that. So sorry, because I've got so
- 13:24many windows. How do I?
- 13:26Oh yeah, I'm back here. Yeah, we're, I guess on the
- 13:31fitness thing, I actually teach classes that it's quite, it's
- 13:34quite close to me. Australia's full of the most
- 13:37beautiful gyms. I think a few places more than
- 13:42New York. They've tried to keep that
- 13:43really cool elite kind of club. You know, I can't remember the
- 13:48name of it, but not Barry I. Was selling her.
- 13:51House or Equinox as well, like they tried and I feel we're kind
- 13:55of moving to the 2.0 version of that that as a bit Yeah, so
- 14:00true, you know it and the the kind of you know, I'm I'm a
- 14:04millennial, but probably they're very the young millennials or
- 14:08just going to the yeah Gen are starting to create these kind of
- 14:11sub subcultures and probably a lot of guys in it as well.
- 14:15Like I've seen a few cycle clubs pop up as well which are pretty
- 14:19cool. The other one that on Monday I'm
- 14:21travelling to London to World Retail Congress, which for all
- 14:26intense purposes has now sold out as they put on on on the on
- 14:30their website, which I went there last year.
- 14:34It was in Paris and it's ultimately I think this is well,
- 14:37I I said this is where CE OS go to learn.
- 14:41So I'm I'm curious I'm excited I'm interested to see whether or
- 14:44not how is it going to go. They're doing store tours as
- 14:47well, which unfortunately, I don't think I, I feel a bit left
- 14:50out on this, this one. Whereas at some, some events you
- 14:54sort of get included in everything, on some you sort of
- 14:57get because your media or press, you get pushed to the side and I
- 15:01get it. So, but what I wanted to do was
- 15:05where is it? They're store tours.
- 15:07Where is this view the agenda? Here we are.
- 15:09So they're going to be going, they're doing flagship store
- 15:12tours in London because this is going to be at the Hilton on
- 15:17Park, which is just near Hyde Park and literally down the road
- 15:21is Oxford Street. So pretty good location and very
- 15:26accessible. They're doing Selfridges, John
- 15:28Lewis. And again, remember I was saying
- 15:31about how the world is fracturing and it's like, well,
- 15:35you just look at what they, I mean, obviously John Lewis is
- 15:39sort of for everyone, but Selfridges is aspirational
- 15:42luxury. And then you've got sort of
- 15:44Primark and Sports Direct all within, you know, 500 metres of
- 15:49each other, all flagship stores, all on multiple layers, but you
- 15:53can see the 22 worlds. And then there's these new store
- 15:56formats. And I will finish up because
- 15:58we're, we're hitting really at the, the top.
- 16:00So the, the new store formats. And I reviewed this Gym Shark,
- 16:04which in my mind was London's best retail experience.
- 16:08They were doing everything right.
- 16:10But now they've got a Challenger, IKEA has opened up
- 16:13on Oxford Circus and they're sort of, well, I mean, they're
- 16:18two different businesses, right? But flat pack furniture, you
- 16:23know, gym Bros or gym, gym, gym, gym people.
- 16:27But their format, the store, the most most important thing here
- 16:30is the store format is changing or has changed.
- 16:33And here's some examples. And you know, all, as I said,
- 16:36within 500 metres of each other. So I'm looking forward to that
- 16:40and maybe we'll talk a little bit about this.
- 16:43Yeah, next week, so. I think as well that that one
- 16:47for the CEOs has probably got to be the best part of that
- 16:50conference, right? Like going out and seeing like
- 16:54Oxford Street will be. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:57I, I remember last year and like for example, there was the maybe
- 17:02she was the CEO of Wuma in Asia and she, she was in Paris again
- 17:07and they were going to Carrefour.
- 17:09So they did, you know, fair, fair play to them.
- 17:11They did sort of attract that sort of global CEO.
- 17:16I mean, tickets for non retail attendees are 7 grand, right?
- 17:21So if you're a tech company wanting to come, you really have
- 17:24to be invested and going. So I'm so I'm excited and I'll
- 17:28obviously we'll share that next week.
- 17:29As I said, I think we've done 5. Any closing thoughts?
- 17:35No, I'll be mindful of my time in the next next week and no.
- 17:39It's cool. No, it's cool and probably the
- 17:41only thing as well. I kind of mentioned to you and
- 17:43I'll not I'll go and eat more as marketplaces I think is going to
- 17:48take a bit of a left and I think it's just because everyone's so
- 17:52aware of social and they're coming back to the basics.
- 17:56And if they're not, how can you do tech talk and all the rest of
- 17:59your traditional when you don't even have an Amazon strategy?
- 18:03To me, yes, that's table steaks. That's so an American phrase I
- 18:07heard at shock talk table steaks before you go.
- 18:10So. And I'm just really looking
- 18:11forward to hearing some of the differences between the opposite
- 18:14side of the world, Alex, as we. Yeah, kind of get into this.
- 18:18Laura, thank you so much. Have a beautiful, Is it sunny
- 18:21day in Sydney? I can see there's like, yeah, it
- 18:24looks like palm trees behind you.
- 18:25Yeah. It's like wow, sorry to make you
- 18:28jealous but anyway. Alright, all right, until next
- 18:33week. Bye.
