- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness, Happy Thursday. Today is the day that we are
- 0:08closing out the book of First John.
- 0:11And honestly, John ends this letter with a really strong
- 0:16challenge for all of us. We're gonna be reading First
- 0:20John chapter 5, verses 18 to 21, and we're gonna go through
- 0:25talking about repentance, idols, sin for what it is and what it
- 0:32actually means to follow Jesus right now, not just someday.
- 0:37So let's go ahead and read it together.
- 0:41We are convinced that everyone fathered by God does not make
- 0:46sinning a way of life, because the Son of God protects the
- 0:50child of God, and the evil 1 cannot touch him.
- 0:54We know that we are God's children and that the whole
- 0:58world lies under the misery and influence of the evil. 1 And we
- 1:04know that the Son of God has made our understanding come
- 1:07alive, so that we can know by experience the one who is true,
- 1:13and we are in him who is true, God's Son, Jesus Christ, the
- 1:19true God in eternal life. So little children, guard
- 1:25yourselves from worshiping anything but Him.
- 1:31OK, there is so much that I would love to talk about, but
- 1:36the first thing I want to begin with is that there is no middle
- 1:40ground. John makes it abundantly clear
- 1:44throughout this letter that followers of Jesus, true
- 1:48children of God, cannot make peace with sin.
- 1:52It's not because believers all of a sudden become perfect, but
- 1:58because genuine faith produces A conviction that leads to
- 2:03repentance and a desire to obey God.
- 2:07There is a difference between struggling with sin or settling
- 2:13into sin. Now the world treats sin
- 2:17casually, but y'all sin is destructive.
- 2:22It separates us from intimacy with God, it hardens our hearts,
- 2:27and it numbs conviction. So you cannot continually feed
- 2:32the flesh while expecting to be close with the spirit.
- 2:38I think culture has normalized things that are so spiritually
- 2:43destructive and oftentimes we don't even realize it.
- 2:47Things like getting drunk repeatedly or being in an impure
- 2:52relationship. Whether you are dating someone
- 2:55or just doing it casually. Living consumed by lust, making
- 3:01lying a way of life, obsessing over your appearance, living for
- 3:06approval and validation online. Eventually guys, what's
- 3:12dangerous starts to look normal because everyone around us is
- 3:17doing it and celebrating it. But sin is not harmless.
- 3:23Sin is an illness and it keeps you sick.
- 3:27Repentance is at the core of the Christian life.
- 3:31It is not just a one time moment at salvation.
- 3:34It is an ongoing posture of turning from sin and toward God.
- 3:41Jesus commanded us to deny ourselves, take up our cross
- 3:46daily, and to follow Him daily. So following Jesus requires
- 3:53ongoing surrender. And then John closes the entire
- 3:57book by essentially saying protect yourselves from idols.
- 4:04An idol is anything that takes God's place at the center of
- 4:08your life. And modern idols are a lot of
- 4:13the times socially acceptable. It could be money, possessions,
- 4:19a relationship, or a status, your own appearance.
- 4:24But think about it how it is evolved from maybe a marble
- 4:29statue at times in the Bible to now our physical body.
- 4:36It could look like attention, your schedule, your validation
- 4:42control, anything that you depend on more than God for
- 4:47identity and security can become an idol, and idols usually grow
- 4:53quietly. Overtime.
- 4:56Prayer can weaken, conviction softens, and compromise starts
- 5:02to get easier to justify. Eventually you look back and you
- 5:08have moved so far, and Jesus becomes a part of your life
- 5:14instead of being the point, instead of being the Lord over
- 5:18it. Culture will celebrate many of
- 5:22the very things that are pulling you away from God.
- 5:25But just because it is quote UN quote normal does not mean that
- 5:30it's healthy. Just because it's popular does
- 5:34not mean that it is holy. Now let's go through the good
- 5:39news because a lot of that can feel heavy.
- 5:42The good news is that Jesus did not come only to forgive your
- 5:47sins. Someday when you get to heaven,
- 5:50He came to free you from slavery to it.
- 5:53Right now, as Christians, sin is no longer your master.
- 6:00Yes, we will still face temptation and a crossroads of
- 6:05what we're going to choose, but we are no longer bound to live
- 6:09under the control of our flesh or of the world.
- 6:13That is why this passage is so significant.
- 6:17John is reminding believers who they truly belong to.
- 6:22So ask yourself this question. Who is Jesus to you really?
- 6:28Who is he to you? If he really is Lord, that
- 6:33changes how you live. The gospel is not just about
- 6:37being saved from judgment and receiving salvation.
- 6:42It is an invitation to something so much greater and to surrender
- 6:47that leads to freedom and transformation.
- 6:50Not later, not once life slows down and it's convenient for
- 6:55you, but today, right now, maybe today is an invite to honestly
- 7:02examine your heart before God. Is there something that you've
- 7:07been excusing that He's asking you to surrender?
- 7:11Is there an idol in your life that is consuming more of your
- 7:15mind than thinking about the Lord and how you can honor Him
- 7:21that is competing for your affection?
- 7:25Have you grown comfortable with sin instead of fighting it?
- 7:31Y'all, Jesus loves you far too much to leave you trapped in the
- 7:36things that are destroying your soul.
- 7:40Repentance is not rejection from God.
- 7:44It is the invite that is so near and dear to God's heart that
- 7:49draws us back into closeness with Him.
- 7:53He is so worthy of our full surrender.
- 7:57And I believe that once you say yes to going all in with Jesus,
- 8:03you just can't even comprehend what is on the other side of
- 8:08that surrender, that breakthrough, that freedom, that
- 8:12healing mentally, emotionally, or even physically.
- 8:15So my encouragement to you guys is don't entertain the idea that
- 8:20this world entertains. That you can ride the fence
- 8:25spiritually, that you can love Jesus but still hold on to the
- 8:29things that are killing you. That you can claim intimacy with
- 8:33God the Father while willingly staying in what separates you
- 8:36from Him. Remember that true followers of
- 8:41Jesus do not make peace with sin.
- 8:46That is the bottom line. Sin no longer owns you.
- 8:51We are not called to stay stuck. We are not called to casually
- 8:56coexist in darkness. We are called to walk in the
- 9:00light. So be a child of the light.
- 9:04Live as a authentic, true child of God.
- 9:08OK with all of that, let's go ahead and end this in prayer.
- 9:12Dear Jesus, thank you for this word.
- 9:20Thank you for the book of first John that we have gotten to walk
- 9:24through together and just learn more about your heart that you
- 9:30are truth, you are love God, you are life.
- 9:36You are where full abundant life is found.
- 9:42So I just pray that every listener who is listening to
- 9:47this podcast, that they would encounter you in new ways.
- 9:53I pray that they would feel emboldened, empowered to live
- 9:57differently in this world, to flee from sin, to run from
- 10:03temptations that lead them into sin.
- 10:07God, would you make us more aware of what is holy and pure
- 10:12and what is not? Your scripture is clear.
- 10:17God, I pray that we would not entertain sin, that we would not
- 10:22try to manage it or control it, but that we would pursue a life
- 10:27that is righteous, that is holy, that is pure, that honors you
- 10:35and pleases you. God, we are here for you.
- 10:40It is in you, through you, and for You that all things are made
- 10:44and exist. So our bodies, our breath, our
- 10:49energy, our opportunities that you give us, Lord.
- 10:52They are meant to exalt your name.
- 10:55So I just ask that we would be bold ambassadors of Christ, that
- 11:01we would carry the good news wherever we go, and that we
- 11:04would just exemplify your love in the way that we speak, in the
- 11:08way that we think, in the way that we act toward others.
- 11:13Thank you, Lord, thank you for your sacrifice.
- 11:19Jesus, we praise you, we give you this day, we surrender our
- 11:24hearts to you and your name. We pray Jesus, Amen.
- 11:29OK y'all. Well, that is today's podcast
- 11:31episode. I loved going through this book
- 11:34on this podcast. I'm thinking I will go into
- 11:38second John and 3rd John and then be praying about what is
- 11:43after that. But I hope you all have a great
- 11:45rest of your day and I will see y'all on the next episode.
