- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 24th of
- 0:16March. And I am delighted that you have
- 0:19joined me because we have reached the the central moment.
- 0:24We have reached this hinge, this turning point in the gospel of
- 0:28Mark. The first half of Mark kind of
- 0:30races through at this frenetic pace, all these different things
- 0:33happening in the life of Jesus. And the whole time, nobody
- 0:36really gets it. Nobody understands who Jesus is.
- 0:40And so Mark shares this interesting, peculiar story
- 0:44about this kind of healing gone wrong when Jesus heals this
- 0:48blind man, but he still can't see clearly until Jesus comes
- 0:53back a second time to make this healing stick and work properly.
- 0:58And that is this metaphor for the fact that people just cannot
- 1:02see who Jesus is. And it's in the very following
- 1:06section where finally someone for the first time in the
- 1:09Gospel, announces that Jesus is the Messiah.
- 1:14And from that point on, the rest of the gospel slows and settles
- 1:19into Jesus teaching about his mission, his death, and his
- 1:24resurrection. So let us take together this
- 1:27final dash and then settle in as we read together Mark Chapter 8.
- 1:43About this time, another large crowd had gathered and the
- 1:46people ran out of food again. Jesus called his disciples and
- 1:50told them. I feel sorry for these people.
- 1:53They have been here with me for three days and they've nothing
- 1:57left to eat. If I send them home hungry,
- 2:00they'll faint along the way, for some of them have come a long
- 2:03distance, his disciples replied. How are we supposed to find
- 2:08enough food to feed them out here in the wilderness?
- 2:11Jesus asked, How much bread do you have?
- 2:147 loaves, they replied. So Jesus told them all to sit
- 2:18down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves,
- 2:22thanked God for them and broke them into pieces.
- 2:25He gave them to his disciples who distributed the bread to the
- 2:28crowd. A few small fish were found too.
- 2:32So Jesus also blessed these and told the disciples to distribute
- 2:35them. They ate as much as they wanted.
- 2:39Afterward, the disciples picked up 7 large baskets of leftover
- 2:43food. There were about 4000 men in the
- 2:47crowd that day, and Jesus sent them home after they had eaten.
- 2:51Immediately after this, he got into a boat with his disciples
- 2:56and crossed over to the region of Dalmanatha.
- 3:01When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and
- 3:04started to argue with Him, testing him.
- 3:07They demanded that He show them a miraculous sign from heaven to
- 3:10prove His authority. When he heard this, he sighed
- 3:15deeply in his spirit and said, Why do these people keep
- 3:19demanding A miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not
- 3:24give this generation any such sign.
- 3:27So we got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the
- 3:31other side of the lake. But the disciples had forgotten
- 3:35to bring any food. They had only one loaf of bread
- 3:38with them in the boat. As they were crossing the lake,
- 3:41Jesus warned them, Watch out, beware of the yeast, of the
- 3:45Pharisees and of Herod. At this they began to argue with
- 3:50each other because they hadn't brought any bread.
- 3:53Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said.
- 3:55Why are you arguing about having no bread?
- 3:58Don't you know or understand even yet?
- 4:02Are your hearts too hard to take it in?
- 4:05You have eyes, can't you see? You have ears?
- 4:08Can't you hear? Don't you remember anything at
- 4:11all? When I fed the 5000 with five
- 4:14loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you
- 4:18pick up afterward? 12 they said.
- 4:21And when I fed the 4000 with 7 loaves, how many large baskets
- 4:26of leftovers did you pick up? Seven, they said.
- 4:31Don't you understand yet? He asked them.
- 4:34When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man
- 4:38to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him.
- 4:42Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the
- 4:45village. Then spitting on the man's eyes,
- 4:49he laid his hands on him and asked, Can you see anything now?
- 4:54The man looked around. Yes, he said, I see people, but
- 4:59I can't see them very clearly. They look like trees walking
- 5:03around. Then Jesus placed his hand on
- 5:06the man's eyes again, and his eyes were opened.
- 5:10His sight was completely restored and he could see
- 5:13everything clearly. Jesus sent him away saying,
- 5:17don't go back into the village on your way home.
- 5:21Jesus and his disciples left Galilee and went up to the
- 5:24villages near Caesarea Philippi. As they were walking along, he
- 5:28asked them, Who do people say I am?
- 5:31Well, they replied, some say John the Baptist, some say
- 5:36Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.
- 5:40Then he asked them, But who do you say I am?
- 5:44Peter replied, You are the Messiah.
- 5:48But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
- 5:53Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer
- 5:56many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the
- 6:00leading priests, and the teachers of religious law.
- 6:03He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from
- 6:07the dead. As he talked about this openly
- 6:09with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand
- 6:13him for saying such things. Jesus turned around and looked
- 6:16at his disciples, then reprimanded Peter.
- 6:20Get away from me, Satan, he said.
- 6:23You are seeing things merely from a human point of view, not
- 6:26from God's. Then calling the crowd to join
- 6:30his disciples, he said, If any of you wants to be my follower,
- 6:35you must give up your own way. Take up your cross and follow
- 6:39me. If you try to hang on to your
- 6:41life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for
- 6:45my sake and for the sake of the good news, you will save it.
- 6:49And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose
- 6:53your own soul? Is anything worth more than your
- 6:56soul? If anyone is ashamed of Me and
- 6:59My message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man
- 7:04will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of
- 7:08his Father with the holy angels. Oh Jesus, we see you clearly and
- 7:23we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are the Messiah.
- 7:28You are the Son of God. You are God himself, present in
- 7:33the very beginning, in creation, throughout time and into
- 7:39eternity. You are the Most High, You are
- 7:43our Saviour, and you have made everything right.
- 7:47So we proclaim this truth and give us a spirit of boldness
- 7:52that we would never be ashamed to speak the truth of you and
- 7:56who you are and what you mean to us, because the world
- 8:00desperately needs to know you and what you have done for the
- 8:04world, what you have done for each of us.
- 8:08Transform us, use us, your beloved children, and we pray
- 8:14all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
