- 0:12Speaker 1: 2 Kings 5.27 In my life, Lord, no matter how

- 1:40Speaker 2: In our last story, God healed a foreign warrior by
- 1:43Speaker 2: the name of Naaman. Naaman was plagued with leprosy and
- 1:47Speaker 2: turned down by the king of Israel. Elisha saw this
- 1:51Speaker 2: as a perfect opportunity to show all the nations that
- 1:54Speaker 2: the Lord is a Lord of healing and power. Naaman
- 1:58Speaker 2: was refreshed in the cool water of the Jordan River.
- 2:02Speaker 2: As he bathed himself in the river, his sick and
- 2:04Speaker 2: dying flesh was replaced with new life. Now we learn
- 2:08Speaker 2: of Naaman's newfound love for God and desire to bless
- 2:12Speaker 2: the people of God. However, Elisha's servant Gehazi's heart changes
- 2:17Speaker 2: for the worse as he descends into a cycle of
- 2:20Speaker 2: greed and treachery, inspired by the book of 2 Kings.
- 2:27Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:29Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:32Speaker 3: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries. and can only come
- 2:36Speaker 3: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:38Speaker 3: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:42Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:44Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:47Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:50Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:53Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:57Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 3:00Speaker 3: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's JackGraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:07Speaker 3: you for your support. In the previous episode, we learned
- 3:13Speaker 3: about Naaman, the Syrian commander who sought healing for his
- 3:16Speaker 3: leprosy from the prophet Elisha in Israel. Despite his initial
- 3:21Speaker 3: reluctance and prideful thinking, Naaman finally acted in faith and
- 3:26Speaker 3: believed God and his skin, his illness, was completely healed. Today,
- 3:33Speaker 3: We'll pick up where we left off yesterday and hear
- 3:35Speaker 3: how Naaman responded to his healing and how Elisha's servant
- 3:39Speaker 3: Gehazi gives in to corruptive thinking and deceit. He suffers
- 3:44Speaker 3: a painful consequence for his choice and became an example
- 3:48Speaker 3: of God's judgment for greed and dishonesty. So, here's today's
- 3:53Speaker 3: Bible reading.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Naaman emerged from the Jordan River a new man. As
- 3:59Speaker 2: the sun set, the old and dying flesh had been
- 4:02Speaker 2: washed away along with his old life. In many ways,
- 4:06Speaker 2: Naaman was a completely new person. He had experienced the
- 4:09Speaker 2: glory of God in the cool river for the first time.
- 4:13Speaker 2: His heart beat with more purpose. His lungs were filled
- 4:16Speaker 2: with new life. He was aware and alert to the
- 4:20Speaker 2: movement of God. This caused joy in Naaman like never before.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He rushed immediately to Elisha and said, I know with
- 4:29Speaker 2: complete certainty that there is no God except the God
- 4:33Speaker 2: of Israel. Then Naaman rolled out gifts of gold and
- 4:37Speaker 2: silver to give to Elisha. Elisha shook his head and smiled. No,
- 4:43Speaker 2: as surely as the Lord lives, I will take nothing
- 4:45Speaker 2: from you. Naaman urged Elisha to receive any type of
- 4:49Speaker 2: gift from him. Although Naaman was trying to give Elisha gifts,
- 4:53Speaker 2: it was really a gesture towards God. Gratitude filled his
- 4:57Speaker 2: heart for the first time in years, and he desired
- 5:00Speaker 2: to bless those who blessed him. Very well, Naaman replied,
- 5:05Speaker 2: but at least allow me to load my mules with
- 5:07Speaker 2: some of the earth from this holy place. I would
- 5:09Speaker 2: like to remind myself continually of this experience. His eyes
- 5:14Speaker 2: began to well up with tears. They were tears of
- 5:17Speaker 2: joy and peace. From now on I will not worship
- 5:20Speaker 2: any god except the Lord. Only may the Lord pardon
- 5:24Speaker 2: me when my king leans on me to bow. Elisha
- 5:28Speaker 2: was filled with the joy of the Lord at Naaman's
- 5:31Speaker 2: change of heart. He could see the transformative power of
- 5:34Speaker 2: God in his life. Go in peace, he told him.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And with that, Naaman departed back to his home. Yet
- 5:41Speaker 2: with all the Lord's blessing, darkness still lingered. Gehazi, the
- 5:46Speaker 2: servant of Elisha, stood in bitterness as Naaman left. He
- 5:50Speaker 2: watched as the rich commander left with all his riches.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Why didn't my master accept the gifts he offered, he
- 5:57Speaker 2: said to himself. Led by greed, Gehazi packed his things
- 6:01Speaker 2: to go pursue Naaman to receive gifts for himself. Gehazi
- 6:05Speaker 2: rode fast to catch up to them, intent on satisfying
- 6:09Speaker 2: his fleshy desire for temporary things. Naaman saw him running
- 6:13Speaker 2: after him. He climbed down from his chariot and walked
- 6:17Speaker 2: towards him. Worried that something might be wrong, Naaman shouted,
- 6:21Speaker 2: Is everything okay? Yes, Gehazi said, trying to catch his breath. However,
- 6:26Speaker 2: my master has sent me to tell you that two
- 6:29Speaker 2: of your prophets have just arrived at the house. He
- 6:32Speaker 2: would like seventy-five pounds of silver and two sets of
- 6:35Speaker 2: clothing to give them as gifts. Gehazi lied. There were
- 6:38Speaker 2: no prophets. He fully planned to keep the wealth for himself.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Greed had a chokehold over his heart, and it would
- 6:46Speaker 2: not relent. Naaman smiled, pleased that he could bless the
- 6:50Speaker 2: household of Elisha. Of course, take double the portion. So
- 6:54Speaker 2: Naaman's servants followed Gehazi back. Gehazi took the goods back
- 6:58Speaker 2: to the house and hid the treasures for himself. Then
- 7:02Speaker 2: Gehazi composed himself, brushed the dust off his cloak, and
- 7:06Speaker 2: walked back into the house. He was met with a
- 7:09Speaker 2: sitting Elisha. Gehazi did his best to smile. He passed
- 7:13Speaker 2: his master and began his regular chores. Where have you been, Gehazi?
- 7:18Speaker 2: Elisha asked casually. Nowhere, Gehazi replied while sweeping, doing his
- 7:23Speaker 2: best to avoid eye contact. Elisha sighed, displeased with Gehazi's
- 7:28Speaker 2: unwillingness to repent on his own. He must have known
- 7:31Speaker 2: that Elisha would have found out. Was he really that
- 7:34Speaker 2: ignorant of how the Lord worked? Gehazi, Elisha said gently.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Don't you realize that I was with you in spirit
- 7:42Speaker 2: while you approached Naaman on his chariot? Gehazi gulped, realizing
- 7:46Speaker 2: that his sins had caught up to him quicker than expected.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Are we to receive money and clothing? Are we to
- 7:52Speaker 2: receive olive groves, beautiful vineyards, livestock and servants? Is this
- 7:58Speaker 2: who we are? Elisha's voice became more harsh. He stood
- 8:02Speaker 2: to his feet and met Gehazi in the eyes. He
- 8:05Speaker 2: stared at him intensely. Gehazi could feel the eyes of
- 8:08Speaker 2: God on him. Because you have robbed a man healed
- 8:11Speaker 2: of leprosy, you and your descendants will struggle with that
- 8:15Speaker 2: same plight forever. Gehazi's guilt rushed over him, and pain
- 8:20Speaker 2: began to rush up his arms and legs. Then, in
- 8:23Speaker 2: that moment, Gehazi's body crumbled with leprosy.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Today's passage opens up where we ended yesterday. Naaman followed
- 8:36Speaker 3: Elisha's instructions after dipping himself in the Jordan seven times.
- 8:40Speaker 3: He then emerged with new skin, completely healed of leprosy.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So in 2 Kings 5.15, we read then what Naaman did.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Then he returned to the man of God, he and
- 8:52Speaker 3: all of his company, and he came and stood before
- 8:54Speaker 3: him and he said, Behold, I know that there is
- 8:57Speaker 3: no God in all the earth but in Israel. This
- 9:01Speaker 3: man who had such doubts about finding healing in this
- 9:04Speaker 3: foreign river from a prophet who didn't even come out
- 9:08Speaker 3: and make a show of healing him had experienced a change,
- 9:12Speaker 3: a change deep in his heart, much deeper than his skin.
- 9:16Speaker 3: He regained the feeling that he had lost in his leprosy.
- 9:19Speaker 3: But more importantly, his heart is warm towards God, the
- 9:23Speaker 3: God of healing, who had healed not only his physical disease,
- 9:27Speaker 3: but washed his spirit. And his response was to confess God,
- 9:31Speaker 3: not just to Elisha, but in the presence of all
- 9:35Speaker 3: his company. This grateful man wanted to repay Elisha for
- 9:39Speaker 3: what he had done. but Elisha would accept no payment.
- 9:42Speaker 3: It was God who had healed, and Elisha would not
- 9:45Speaker 3: profit in this way from his ministry. Naaman then made
- 9:49Speaker 3: a request that may sound unusual. He asked for permission
- 9:53Speaker 3: to load dirt into a cart so he could carry
- 9:56Speaker 3: it home and spread it on the ground there. It
- 9:58Speaker 3: may sound very strange to him, our ears, of course,
- 10:01Speaker 3: but Elisha would have understood it. Naaman was recognizing that
- 10:05Speaker 3: the soil in Israel represented God's land, God's territory. And
- 10:11Speaker 3: now that Naaman had given his heart and trust to
- 10:13Speaker 3: the one true God, the God of Israel, He wanted
- 10:16Speaker 3: to take some of that territory, symbolically speaking, to his
- 10:20Speaker 3: own home so that he could worship God on his land.
- 10:25Speaker 3: He then asked Elisha to pardon him for when he
- 10:28Speaker 3: had to go before his king to bow down to
- 10:30Speaker 3: a pagan god, Rimen. In other words, he knew he
- 10:34Speaker 3: would have to put on an act if he was
- 10:36Speaker 3: going to pay honor to a false god, and so
- 10:38Speaker 3: he wanted Elisha and God himself to know that his
- 10:41Speaker 3: heart was truly committed to the Lord and not an idol.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Elisha recognized the intent behind these requests and told Naaman
- 10:50Speaker 3: to go in peace. So, Naaman departed, leaving no gifts,
- 10:54Speaker 3: but taking holy ground with him back to Syria. But
- 10:58Speaker 3: while Naaman's heart had been filled with faith in God,
- 11:02Speaker 3: Elisha's servant Gehiza was moving in the opposite direction. He
- 11:07Speaker 3: allowed greed to enter his heart and to fill it
- 11:09Speaker 3: with darkness and sin. Like the leprosy that had filled
- 11:13Speaker 3: Naaman's body and left him unfeeling, greed and sin numbed
- 11:17Speaker 3: Gehazi's heart and he went after Naaman with deceit and
- 11:21Speaker 3: personal gain on his mind. He caught up to Naaman
- 11:24Speaker 3: who asked what he needed. Gehazi lied and said Elisha
- 11:28Speaker 3: had requested silver and clothing to give his gift to
- 11:31Speaker 3: two sons of prophets. Naaman was eager to give generously
- 11:35Speaker 3: and gave a double portion, to Elisha's unfaithful servant. Gehiza
- 11:43Speaker 3: hid what he had received, but Elisha knew. So he
- 11:47Speaker 3: questioned his servant, asking where he had been. Again, Gehiza
- 11:51Speaker 3: lied and said he hadn't been anywhere. That's when Elisha
- 11:54Speaker 3: let him know that he had been caught. He rebuked
- 11:57Speaker 3: him for what he had done, taking from Naaman and
- 11:59Speaker 3: making a mockery of what God had done to show
- 12:02Speaker 3: his glory to a foreigner. Elisha sent Gehiza away with
- 12:06Speaker 3: a curse. The leprosy of which Naaman had been healed
- 12:10Speaker 3: would be visited upon him and his descendants. And as
- 12:14Speaker 3: he walked away, Gehiza's flesh was consumed with leprosy. Lord God,
- 12:20Speaker 3: we thank you for the truth of the Bible and
- 12:22Speaker 3: the greatness of these stories that we're hearing. We pray,
- 12:25Speaker 3: O God, that we would learn each day the lessons
- 12:28Speaker 3: we need to live in obedience to you. Help us, Lord,
- 12:32Speaker 3: to have hearts that are full of you and always
- 12:35Speaker 3: sensitive to know and do your will. In Jesus' name, amen.
