- 2:12chair and House of Delica It's member. He's going to join this a little
- 2:15bit later on. Also standing by Metro New state wide correspondent Brad mclahanny.
- 2:17I want to get to him on some things as well well. Of course,
- 2:22a big story around these parts. The Thai Hunt saga continues, talking
- 2:25about former Charleston Police Chief Thi Hunt and now lieutenant. An official complaint was
- 2:30filed on Monday and was confirmed by Lieutenant Tony Hazelo with the Charleston Police Department
- 2:37to media members yesterday. At this latest, this is a woman, a
- 2:42former police officer, is alleging, alleging being the keyword, that Chief Hunt
- 2:46falsified a polygraph test to help her get higher down. The former complaint was
- 2:51filed with the State Police. Lady in question i had applied to be an
- 2:54officer in twenty eighteen and said that she had been worried about passing the lie
- 3:00detector due to pass drug use. She's claiming claiming that then the police chief
- 3:06Taka told her she would pass. She is alleging that the two had had
- 3:13sex. The woman was later charged with battery after a fight at a party
- 3:17and resigned from the Charleston Police Department. She then rejoined the force a year
- 3:22or so later and again took a potograph test that she says she lied on
- 3:27the test, but passed the test anyway. So that's where we are right
- 3:30now with the with the Tai hunt situation. And it was brought up Monday
- 3:37night Drean City Council and at that time the mayor said to media members there
- 3:42had been no formal complaint. Well, that formal complaint is here folowed with
- 3:45the West Virginia State Police. So we'll no no comment as of now from
- 3:50city officials on this. We will have comments when they become available. So
- 3:55that's where we are right now. Let's get to our good friend atroduced it.
- 4:00Why correspondent Brad Mcalhenny. Brad, Good morning, how are you?
- 4:03What a seg? Hello? Yes? Hello Brad? How are things happy?
- 4:09Happy Wednesday? Everybody? I hadn't mad you on to to. I
- 4:12think you'd been vacationing, maybe putting a kid in college or something like that.
- 4:16I had a few things to do. Yeah, I've had to move
- 4:20at least one kid around around this great nation and also took a bit of
- 4:27a restpite. So I'm back this week and where did it go? Well,
- 4:30you know, and you certainly aren't it. The hardest working man in
- 4:33media. And while we're talking about college, you know, I'm a man
- 4:40of the world, as you know. My day yesterday took me to the
- 4:43lovely campus of West Virginia Wesleyan in mccannon Bucktown, as the locals called home
- 4:49of the iconic donut spot best donuts and Pepperoni rolls in the state of West
- 4:53Virginia, by the way. And I was talking to some university officials there
- 4:57yesterday at Westley and they were telling me Brad some of the things that they
- 5:00were doing to try to help out the students of Alderson brought us. And
- 5:02I know State and I've had Eric Cage on the show, and I've had
- 5:05Marty Roth of University of Charleston the show talking about it as well, what
- 5:11some of these institutions are doing to try to help out these students of Alderson
- 5:14brought us University. And I'm hearing Brad in talking to some folks in that
- 5:18area yesterday that there could be even more fallout from this mess that is Alderson
- 5:24brought us. We'll get the WVU in a moment but there's some more stuff
- 5:28coming out here. Well. For one thing, Alderson Brought Us, although
- 5:33it is closed to students, still needs to wind down, and it had
- 5:38significant debt, including a multimillion dollars loan from the US Department of Agriculture,
- 5:46a loan meant for rural entities that can't get lending from other sources because they're
- 5:51so far behind the eight ball. So it seems like what remains of Alderson
- 5:58Brought Us is headed towards some sort of bankruptcy, probably a liquidation, and
- 6:02so then presumably a judge will determine who was entitled to whatever property remains.
- 6:11You know, I mean, Allison brought Us is deeply embedded with Philippi,
- 6:15the community that within and has been for roughly one hundred years. So you
- 6:20know, you'd hope for a good outcome from from all of that wind down
- 6:26and the property could become something else, something useful that would thrive in the
- 6:31community. But of course there are no guarantees for social matters, so that
- 6:38that's hard to say that. The students themselves, I think largely have been
- 6:42transferring and as you said, Wesleyan and other West Virginia colleges have tried to
- 6:50ease their path towards transferring some of the folks who who you know, wanted
- 6:56all theism brought us to succeed. I sure don't blame them people who supported
- 7:00the college and felt very invested. There was among some of those folks that
- 7:08that that Wesleyan and was hoping for all of some and Brods's demise. I
- 7:13don't necessarily buy into that. That's kind of a fairly negative way of conspiratorial
- 7:19way of thinking. But you know, these were folks who were deeply pressured
- 7:26rooting for their their institution, and you know, some of them, not
- 7:31all came to believe that that Wesleyan was was kind of trying to push push
- 7:36the situation to get those students. It is true that West Virginia has a
- 7:42declining college going population, and so unfortunately students represent money through their tuition,
- 7:48through their room and board, through being on campus and paying for stuff.
- 7:54So there, you know, there's an incentive to have as many students as
- 7:57you can. But I don't know, I'm just I'm just suggesting to you
- 8:03and listeners that that was kind of a subplot that was circulating in the atmosphere.
- 8:09Well, now, let's get to the state's land grand Institution Brad WVU
- 8:13students protesting on campus on Monday like it was nineteen sixty eight all over again.
- 8:20Yeah, And you know, I think one question is where will that
- 8:22go? Will that kind of student protests change things or alter the course at
- 8:28least a little bit in terms of what kinds of sacrifices WVU is making.
- 8:35There were more students protesting in a different way yesterday. That was individual students
- 8:43addressing the Board of Governors, which was having a special meeting. One of
- 8:48them I saw asked directly right in front of him for the resignation of President
- 8:52Gee. And so the university is facing multiple pressures. One is clearly financial
- 8:58forty five million dollar budget gap that w is trying to close right away.
- 9:03The university has estimated that that could expand to as much as seventy five million
- 9:07dollars if they don't take action. But the more pressures come from pushback from
- 9:13students and faculty and community members. And then finally, the media covering the
- 9:18situation is not just me and you and the Gazette, mail and other West
- 9:24Virginia media, but it's national. Two, it's it's the new York Times,
- 9:26it's the Washington Post, it's the Chronicle of higher Education. It was
- 9:31the top of the front page story on our significant regional newspaper, the Pittsburgh
- 9:35Post Gazette earlier this week. Didn't Forbes also do a speed I think it
- 9:39was Forbes or somebody did a piece on it as well. I think Forbes
- 9:43did one, you know, and like Alderson brought us, what WFU would
- 9:46like to do to ease its own pressure is increased student population. Well,
- 9:52you know, when that's on the front page of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette,
- 9:56which is a main drawing area, when it's at the by on the front
- 10:00page or the Washington Post, a lot of students from DC, Maryland,
- 10:05Virginia, they are maybe not newspaper readers, but that's still you know,
- 10:09it puts reputational concerns out in the water for them and their parents. Well,
- 10:16those free pressures, right, And here's where it goes politically, because
- 10:20I've already seen some Democratic folks tweeting some things out about, you know,
- 10:24trying to tie this to the governor and say and I'm not I'm not doing
- 10:28that myself, but I'm just saying what they're saying is is basically, if
- 10:31the governor or the state of West Virginia fair or not fair, This is
- 10:33what's being put out there. If the governor, said of West Virginia can't
- 10:35keep the largest institution in the state from from having all these issues, how's
- 10:41he going to do in the Senate. I'm not saying that. I don't
- 10:43think that's a fair comparison, I'll be honest with you, but that is
- 10:46being floated out there. Boy, yeah, you know so. I guess
- 10:54I would say that justice as a commodate for a high profile Senate race,
- 11:00has to be a tune to public opinion, particularly from potential voters. And
- 11:07the other thing is he is a significant power player. He's got a good
- 11:13relationship with President Yee and over the seven years that he's been in office,
- 11:18names the members of the Board of Governors to BVU. I had a private
- 11:24thought yesterday that I will just share privately with you, which is that if
- 11:28students want to make a difference and have a protest or walk out, the
- 11:31place they had to walk out to is the sidewalk between the Governor's mansion and
- 11:35the capital. Do you remember the let them Play rally where during the height
- 11:41of COVID athletes and their families got out in front of the capital and protested
- 11:48while the governor was coming up the walk. Yep, that kind of thing
- 11:50can prove effective. Yeah, you're exactly right. I'm talking to Brad mack
- 11:56ahead before we let you go, Brad. Yesterday there was a lot of
- 11:58bill signing going on yesterday. Talk about that. Yeah, So, I
- 12:05mean, these are these are good things. And this came from the surplus
- 12:09has been running and so consequently you don't know if you're going to have a
- 12:15surplus necessarily in future years. The economy could change. We've been talking about
- 12:20a recession for how long now, dave the past decade, So you don't
- 12:24know that that surplus will be there next year. So the legislature would have
- 12:28got together in special session allocated one time spending to a variety of things.
- 12:35One of those was forty five million dollars for Marshall University's Cybersecurity Institute. The
- 12:43money is going to go not to ongoing funding of the program, but for
- 12:48its headquarters in Huntington to pay for that facility. So the one time spending.
- 12:54So the governor was there to sign the bill at Marshall. Marshall's President
- 12:58Brad Smith was there, President Blair and Speaker Handshaw, And as an aside,
- 13:05I'm currently keeping a whiteboard dedicated purely to whether Justice and Blair are currently
- 13:11getting along or not. But yesterday they were. But that forty five million
- 13:16dollars to Marshall, ironically is the same amount as wu's budget gap. The
- 13:24argument against giving WV the forty five million dollars is WV seems to anticipate it
- 13:30would need it in perpetuity into coming years. But nevertheless, right now,
- 13:35forty five million dollars went to Marshall, and w has a forty five million
- 13:39dollars budget gap. The other thing I will say, in fairness is,
- 13:41if you've used Cancer Institute got fifty million dollars during the regular session, so
- 13:46WVIEW got a similar one time expenditure to support its facilities. But a little
- 13:54bit of pain there the forty five million dollars for Marshall, and W's got
- 13:58the forty five million dollars gap. I bet Pushkin as a thing or two
- 14:01to say about that. Well, oddly enough, he just walked into the
- 14:03Palmar Store studio, so we'll get to him after the break Brad Quick thirty
- 14:07seconds. What do you what do you what do you keep an eye out
- 14:09for today? What's what's going on today? Well, the governor's got this
- 14:13briefing today at quote unquote noon, so you know, we'll see what he
- 14:18has to say. I don't know that we're expecting legislation exactly, but we're
- 14:24coming up on Labor Day and that is the traditional date when campaigns really heat
- 14:30up, and Justice is involved in a big one, the Campaign for Justice.
- 14:35There's always interest in his finances, and the Campaign for Justice got a
- 14:43delay, an approved delay, to file his financials with the US Senate.
- 14:48That's not the same as the Federal Elections Commission. Those are those are two
- 14:52different filings. But the Senate expects both members and candidates to submit fairly detailed
- 15:01filings about what they're what the candidate or members a soul output actually is.
- 15:11And you know that's given given Justice his history, that's going to be very
- 15:16interesting. My understanding is the deadline for him and his campaign to submit that
- 15:22filing is tomorrow, but it's possible that they would get another waiver on another
- 15:26delay. On the other hand, they might follow it might be mined for
- 15:30some interesting information. Well, Brad will be following you along on the website
- 15:33and on the air and on Twitter and all the socials. I appreciate you
- 15:37being here. Thanks a lot, sir, Thanks Dave, and hello to
- 15:41Delegate Pushkins. All right, nine he waved nine twenty three Brad mclehenny again

- 20:25right, you're done? All right, man? I think so why would
- 20:26he? What have you heard? Well, nothing, I haven't made up
- 20:30yet. But but what's stopping you? Well in the past? Head.
- 20:34Oh so we're gonna fire. We're gonna take a shot already. Okay,
- 20:38all right, it's that kind of date. It's that kind are are you?
- 20:41Are you upset? It's the heat. Upset about the heat getting to
- 20:44you. Man. It's not so much the heat, I'm hid, it's
- 20:48the humidity. Now. I'm upset about what's going on at our flagship university.
- 20:52Okay, and you know a school that I attended, you did,
- 20:56uh? And yeah, So it's and it's not just about the student consider
- 21:00there now, it's not just about although I'm very proud of the students who
- 21:03stood up for their school and stood up for their departments and stood up for
- 21:07themselves the other day. And I hope that President Gee and the uh,
- 21:12the board of governors, and especially our governor and our legislature. I hope
- 21:17they were listening. Hope Hope Springs Eternal. But it's not just about the
- 21:26current faculty staff students. Is about the future of West Virginia. In order
- 21:32to attract businesses here, in order to attract people here, we we've got
- 21:37to have educated people. We have to have an educated workforce. And you
- 21:41don't get there by just you know, slashing your flagship university and cutting departments
- 21:47that are very important, whether it's foreign languages. You know, we're trying
- 21:51to attract fortune five hundred companies here from some of these are multinational corporations.
- 21:56They're going to look at that as we don't have a foreign they not have
- 21:57a foreign language department at your flagship university. The slashes to the English department,
- 22:03whether they're cutting creative writing, and there's also a massive cuts to the
- 22:07English department. And I can tell you that, you know, written communication
- 22:11is one of the most important skills you need, uh, not just in
- 22:17this day and age, but in every day and age. It's it's incredibly
- 22:19important. Uh, you know, the graduate level mathematics classes. The cuts
- 22:25to our education department, so that we're going to be producing less teachers from
- 22:29at school. It's it's going to be devastating to the future of this state,
- 22:33definitely to the future of the Morgantown community. We're in your opinion,
- 22:37where does the major There's enough blame to go around, but where is the
- 22:40majority of blame line their opinions? Well, you're at there's there's plenty of
- 22:42blame to go around. First of all, when you have a university president
- 22:45who I feel as a member of the legislature, and I've seen how how
- 22:49other universities have advocated for themselves, to see the lack of advocacy from Gordon
- 22:56ge and he's even said that he's not come down here and asked for funding.
- 22:59And then the other the blame could also be at the Republican legislature,
- 23:03who since they have been in control of the legislature, when they do make
- 23:07cuts, the first thing on the chopping block has been higher education. They
- 23:11have continued to cut higher education, especially in the early years of the Republican
- 23:17majority there twenty fifteen, twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen, when they had to
- 23:21make cuts, the first thing to go was was higher education. It's not
- 23:23something that day valued, not something in to day prioritized. Had the WVW
- 23:29just been kept at its regular funding level. Uh, they're short they would
- 23:34have a short fall, but the short fall will be more manageable around seven
- 23:37million as opposed to forty five million right now. So yet a large part
- 23:41of that blame goes to the legislature and a large part of that blame goes
- 23:45to the governor who has simply not prioritized it. And it's you know,
- 23:48it's not just about that school, it's about the entire state. The state
- 23:52has no future when when you're when you're making this kind of these kinds of
- 23:56cuts to your flagship university. But why are we not here? And again,
- 24:00wvus a little bit of a different animal because it is this the land
- 24:03Grand Institution is the largest university in the state. I get that now,
- 24:07But but but but why are we not hearing about these problems at Marshall University?
- 24:14Why are we not hereing about these problems that even some of the smaller
- 24:15schools that receive state funding in the state of Western why are we not hearing
- 24:19about that at these other schools? Well, prior to President brad Smith,
- 24:23you had President Gilbert who was up at the legislature advocating for for the university
- 24:30there on a regular basis. He was there and he and you know it,
- 24:32maybe it might not have been the most politically expedient thing for him to
- 24:36do. You know, he's no longer there, but he was doing the
- 24:37right thing for his university. And and often, I hate to say it,
- 24:42at Gordon ge just seems to be reg regurgitating these conservative talking points and
- 24:48blaming higher education for its own demise. It's just simply not true. It's
- 24:52something we used to value in this country, was higher education. And now
- 24:57uh, you see, I'll give you an example. You have one of
- 25:02the second tier Republican candidates for president, Governor DeSantis, who is an Ivy
- 25:08League educated. You might not know it by listening to him, but here's
- 25:11an Ivy League education. And he's been downplaying that because he thinks that that
- 25:15hurts him in a Republican primary. Uh several years ago, when you know
- 25:19somebody who I consider a friend, who I disagree with on just about every
- 25:23issue, but the former chair of the West Virginia GOP, Conrad Lucas,
- 25:27he's also he also has an Ivy League education. And when he was running
- 25:30in that primary against Carol Miller and the Republican primary, she attacked him for
- 25:36his Ivy League education, and apparently it worked. She won that race in
- 25:40a landslide. It's something that used to be valued. People wanted their kids
- 25:44to have a good education, and now it's seen as old. And I
- 25:48don't disagree with what you're saying, but there's got to be a balance there,
- 25:52because we also don't want to look down on people because they don't have
- 25:56and I know you don't do that, but but but I mean, we
- 25:59got to have a balance there. But I don't disagree with what you're saying.
- 26:02What do you always felt like, you know, to look down to
- 26:03make that? And it has been become a Republican talking point to like think,
- 26:07oh, people with it's it's elitism and no, it's I've always felt
- 26:11like, you know, what if if if you're the smartest person in the
- 26:14room, you're in the wrong room. We should surround ourselves with people who
- 26:18are smarter than we are. I do it. I do it every day
- 26:21too. I really it just kind of defaults to that. Well, what
- 26:23do you think about what Brad said? I don't know whether you've heard this
- 26:26or not about how this looks on a national front. It's horrible and I
- 26:32know I saw something I think you had retweeted maybe was it from Forbes or
- 26:34something like that about the story. I don't and I know he talked about
- 26:37to Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Washington Post have written stories about this. It's
- 26:41not a good look for the state of West Virginia. And I always bring
- 26:45things back to politics. You know, this Senate race is going to be
- 26:48huge on a nationwide level, and when you have a right or wrong,
- 26:55I'm not I'm not I'm not putting it on either side. I'm just saying
- 26:57that when you have you know, people are going to make a point of
- 27:00this that the governor of the state of West Virginia who wants to be the
- 27:03US Senator to take Senator Mansion seat, whether he runs or not, we
- 27:07don't know that this happened on his watch, and that is that's going to
- 27:12be made a political talking It could be made a political talking point by Alex
- 27:15Mooney in the primary. It should be. It should be made a point.
- 27:19And it's not just a talking point, I mean, not just a
- 27:22political talking point. It's real. It did happen on his watch, as
- 27:23well as a whole lot of other things that have happened on his watch,
- 27:27whether the it's the huge increase in the number of children in foster care that
- 27:33are getting properly taken care of, whether it's the the total we've had to
- 27:37dismantle the DHHR under his watch, it's become completely dysfunctional over there, whether
- 27:42it's the droves of engineers that are leaving the Department of Transportation because of the
- 27:47toxic culture over the Department of Transportation, whether it's the lawsuits against I could
- 27:52go on day, the State Police because of the toxic culture at the State
- 27:55Police. And yeah, it's all happened. What do all these problems have
- 28:00in common, They've all happened under Governor Justice's watch. And now we're seeing
- 28:03the latest in these number of crises that have occurred on his watch. And
- 28:07that's our our flagship university failing and and and just being gutted. Uh.
- 28:15And that's something that's going to affect this state, uh, for the perpetuity.
- 28:18It's going to affect this state for years to come, affect generations of
- 28:22this state. And yeah, it's a horrible look when you see these articles
- 28:26in Forbes magazine, where the leading business magazines biggest business publications in the country
- 28:30writing that West Virginia is not prioritizing education, or you see at the Pittsburgh
- 28:34Post to Gazette and all these these national uh media outlets that are this this
- 28:41incredibly sad story about w V. It's not going to attract businesses to this
- 28:45state. It'll do exact opposite. It's not going to attract people. It's
- 28:48definitely not going to attract young people to this state. And if we're one,
- 28:53I think we're right now the only state that's actually losing population. That's
- 28:57a big problem, and it's it's been increasing under Jim Justice's watching a lot
- 29:03of public dying. Mike, they're dying. But in other states, new
- 29:07people move here and and raise family, you know, a Republican talking point
- 29:11for years, or their sloga, they wanted to make the state a great
- 29:15place to live, work and raise the family. Well, people aren't moving
- 29:18here. They were moving here, Mike, they are moving here. I
- 29:21can tell you why are they're not moving here at a greater rate than people
- 29:25dying, Because we are losing population. And that's a fact proved me wrong.
- 29:27No, I can tell you they are moving to West Virginia because i
- 29:30live in Tay's Valley and I'm seeing it every day with new Core, I'm
- 29:33seeing people moving. They are moving it, but it may not be it
- 29:37may not be enough. I'm great to be parts of the state are wh
- 29:42It was the what we would call the I seventy nine corridor, but that's
- 29:47gonna be coming to an end where these cuts the WVU. You know,
- 29:49this is something really is troubling that you're When Gordon Gee first took over,
- 29:53he went on and he tried to sell a bill of goods to the local
- 29:56chamber up there in local businesses and a lot of property owners, talking about
- 30:00how much he was going to grow the university, and they have overgrown the
- 30:04city of Morgantown there. There's all this available housing there. What's going to
- 30:10happen to all the housing that has been built for the students that aren't coming
- 30:12and it's still being built up there. It's a bit of construction. It's
- 30:15a big problem, all right. I Mean, I got some texts here
- 30:18Texas with state tax money now going to local fire departments, and we know
- 30:22how well they're regulated. Can we get levy money back? Part of what
- 30:26the governor announced yesterday was that some of this some money was going to be
- 30:30going into the fire departments and emergency services, especially volunteer party. I'm absolutely
- 30:36in on education all ins. As a texture, I've said, judge me
- 30:40by my deeds. That was Governor Jim Justice on back in twenty eighteen.
- 30:44According to a texture, his deeds are proven. This statement false. WVU
- 30:48is failing, a big gym is too weak to do anything. No speech,
- 30:49no special session, no blue ribbon commission, no agenda, no effort,
- 30:53just a bunch of political bull You know what. This is what happens
- 30:56when you vote for a phony populist. Yeah. If every single aspect of
- 31:00of of state government under Governor Justice is now failing, he has the reverse
- 31:07Midas touch. Everything he has touched has turned into something I can't even mention
- 31:12on the start. And now he's more concerned about winning an office in Washington,
- 31:18DC than he is about actually showing up at his office down the street
- 31:22at the Capitol. And and it's showing at some point, at some point,
- 31:27somebody has got to realize that the emperor wears no clothes. And if
- 31:30I put that image and he must apologize, anybody had justice without clothes.
- 31:37But the emperor wears is not going to be there much longer. There's going
- 31:41to be a different Republican emperor in the in the in the governor's mansion,
- 31:45not forbid, not of anything. Take what I want to talk about that
- 31:48Texas Pushka is one of those lofty ideal liberals who thinks West Virginia needs math
- 31:53and language courses to succeed as West Virginia and we need all we need is
- 31:56a matic at a bag of Pepperoni rolls. I think that was time.
- 31:59I think, especially if the part that was most tongue, and I think
- 32:04it was referring to me as lofty. Texas certainly okay not to go to
- 32:07college, but one in four doesn't bode well for an educated workforce in the
- 32:12past five years. High school graduate or higher percent of persons age twenty five
- 32:16plus eighty eight percent, bachelor's degree or higher percent percentage of persons twenty one
- 32:22point eight percent, says A texture did push can get a degree from WVU,
- 32:24says A texture I did not. I attended. I studied English there,
- 32:29but no, I did not finish. I was definitely more interested in
- 32:31playing music. Yeah, and I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. I
- 32:37do. I think I value you can come back here, not one hundred
- 32:40and eight. You can still go back. I'm getting closed to it.
- 32:43You're getting closed to it. But I no, I mean, I think
- 32:45it's not just about me. I don't always rever everything back to what's worked
- 32:49for me. What's going to work for the state is having a strong university
- 32:53with a wide array of courses of study so we can have a well trained,
- 32:58well educated workforce and actually have a state that people really do want to
- 33:02move to and live, work and raise a family. A text says we'll
- 33:07do this before break, asking why the Democrats always point fingers instead of name
- 33:09calling, providing leadership and specific policies or solution. Why are you pointing fingers,
- 33:15Michael, Well, because there's plenty of blame to go around. But
- 33:17as far as policy, yeah, we've offered amendments to restore funding to higher
- 33:22education over the years, and we have offered amendments to prioritize what we feel
- 33:29is important if we want to if we want this state to grow. Five

- 37:00the point that people like Greg Thomas and Rob Cornelius, your frequent guests on
- 37:05here, like to bring it up as probably them texting. They look to
- 37:07bring up the puppetry department, which actually is a very course of study that
- 37:12actually pays for itself. There actually was a puppetry department. Yeah, and
- 37:16they were going to cut it before there was a petition that was passed around
- 37:19and actually what they found out and looking at it, actually it paid for
- 37:22itself. It wasn't costing the university anything. But let's talk about the mathematics.
- 37:28The mathematics program that's being cut areign the foreign language department. There will
- 37:32be no foreign language department. That's a pretty important course of study. They're
- 37:37not going to be teaching any foreign languages in a state where we're trying to
- 37:40attract a lot of these multinational companies to come open up shop here. It's
- 37:45not going to happen without a foreign language department. And then all these students
- 37:49that want to take this course of study, well, they're going to be
- 37:52leaving West Virginia because there's no play. There won't be any place for them
- 37:53to do that here. They will be leaving West Virginia, likely to never
- 37:57return. So it's a self fulfilling prophecy, and it's going to We already
- 38:01have a dwindling population in here, population here in West Virginia, and he's
- 38:07cuts to the university are only going to exacerbate that problem. We are the
- 38:12one state that's continuing to lose population under this Republican supermajority, and this do
- 38:16nothing part time governor. Uh, they can't bring himself to actually have a
- 38:21cabinet meets an, he can't bring himself shows not there anymore, Mike,
- 38:24I mean, and I don't disagree with what you're saying a lot of this
- 38:29on governed justice, with all due respect to the governor, but he's not
- 38:31going to be there anymore. You're gonna have another Republican in there, and
- 38:35hopefully it's going to be a Republican. Hopefully they don't have a business that's
- 38:37getting a one How many billions of dollars were they just find in Virginia?
- 38:43And I, you know what, I've got something for the media. How
- 38:45come nobody is covering that. They're so very such little coverage of the fact
- 38:51that we have a governor that's getting fined by our neighboring state. Do you
- 38:54read the Charleston Dozette mail. Yeah, it hasn't been that much in there
- 38:58about it, and it's not being covered as much as it is a lot
- 39:00of other things. It's not being covered. How have you ever heard of
- 39:04a governor getting his wages garnished while he was in office because he refuses to
- 39:07pay his debts, because he refuses to pay the health benefits for his minors.
- 39:13This is a state that that you know, values that men and women
- 39:16who go down in the minds risk their lives to power this country, and
- 39:21the governor values them so little, so little that he refuses to pay their
- 39:25health insurance for their health insurance. Okay, all right, And I don't
- 39:30say a gangerous job. They often too often get hurt. And if you
- 39:32work for Jim Justice, God help you because he didn't pay your premier.
- 39:37I don't disagree with a whole lot of what that means, you agree,
- 39:39and a whole lot of a second day, when you say you don't disagree,
- 39:42does that mean that you agree? I agree with parts with parts of
- 39:44it yet Okay, that's great, parts of it. Yeah, absolutely.
- 39:46But I will also say that come January of twenty twenty five, Jim Justice
- 39:53is no longer going to occupy the office. Okay, there's going to be
- 39:57there's going to be another Republican in there. I think it's good. So
- 40:00you admit it's no Jeff, did you hear that? He just admitted it's
- 40:05going to be a Republican. We're gonna have a Republican governor. Well,
- 40:07I agree, we will have a new governor, and all right, I
- 40:09necessarily hope it's not another I don't know if we can handle you have to
- 40:15have you asked Steve Williams make that announcement. But what I was going to
- 40:19say, Do you think I'm just saying think these things for the sake of
- 40:22saying because I want to blame the Republican governor. No, it's not simply
- 40:25because he's a Republican. It's because he's a horrible governor. He's doing a
- 40:30horrible job. And it's because I love West Virginia and I want to see
- 40:32West Virginia succeed. And we are failing in every single aspect of state government
- 40:37under this this guy's watch, because he doesn't show up for work. I
- 40:42hope whoever the governor is, I hope they show up for work. Republican,
- 40:45we might disagree, Hopefully, hopefully it's a governor and I agree with
- 40:49it. It's going to be a republic for the sake of the west of
- 40:51West Virginia. I hope it's a Democrat because we seem to know it's not.
- 40:54We seem to know how to govern a lot better. And all of
- 40:58these years, all of these good things that you are seeing. Yeah,
- 41:00I know, the past ten years we've been hemorrhaging people and young people out
- 41:04of this state. Tell me what good has happened in the past ten years.
- 41:07I say most of it happened during the first two years of the Biden
- 41:09administration, when with the help of Senator Mansion, they passed the Inflation Reduction
- 41:14You talked about new Core earlier. Why do we have new core because of
- 41:16the Inflation Reduction Act and because of the infrastructure bill that you're president President Trump
- 41:22talked about every other week but just couldn't seem to pass. All right,
- 41:27let me knock out some text here. Mike Pushkin is a leader of a
- 41:29losing organization. He has little influenced state politics, and quite frankly, is
- 41:32irrelevant to the political, economic, educational trajectory of West Virginia. A few
- 41:37people actually care what Pushkin thinks. Are does cared enough to text? There
- 41:42you go, A good answer, Tech says, I'm glad to hear Mike
- 41:45Pushkins around himself with people smarter than him. I guess that's why he finds
- 41:47himself in a room full of Republicans when lawmakers are in session. Well,
- 41:52yeah, that president company excluded there. Okay, let me ask you this
- 41:55Wait a minute, let me ask you this question. Okay. I was
- 41:59talking to some earlier this morning who not in the world of politicians, Fred
- 42:02of mine. It was talking about you being on the show this morning.
- 42:06I told him you're gonna be on the show this morning, and he said,
- 42:07does person can ever have anything at all good to say about Republicans?
- 42:12Now? Last week I wish I could. Last week you complimented Tony Hodge
- 42:15on his peanut butter fudge making abilities. But other than that, and there
- 42:19are times you've talked about it on the show about when about how the majority
- 42:23of bills who get pasted in West Virginia are bipartisan. They just don't make
- 42:27the headlines because they're not sexy sometimes. And I know you have for friends
- 42:30that are on the Republican Party, but I mean, is there any good
- 42:34you can say about about Republicans? I wish there was. I wish they
- 42:37would do nothing. They have so much power right now. This is what's
- 42:40so frustrating about it. They have, you know, the Governor's office,
- 42:44they have the entire Board of Public Works, and they have supermajorities in both
- 42:47the West Virginia House and the West Virginia Senate. And what are they choosing
- 42:51to do about it? They seem to just focus on culture war issues that
- 42:54actually don't really improve the lives, the day to day lives of West Virginia.
- 42:59There's so much good that they could be doing. I wish I could
- 43:02say more good about them, but they're not giving me anything to say good
- 43:07about them. Bush, We're failing, says Pushkin, complaining about a guy
- 43:10he helped elect in twenty sixteen. I ought, to be quite honest,
- 43:15I did not vote for him in the primary, and he really didn't need
- 43:19my help that much in the general. And if you want to look at
- 43:22his I mean I would beg the Texter to go look at his campaign finance
- 43:25report if he ever reported it. I don't know if he's gonna report is
- 43:29now. I'm not sure. If you know, he doesn't seem to follow
- 43:30rules. I don't think you'll see my name on the campaign finance report.

- 45:52Tech says West Virginia has historically valued minors so much at the West Virginia government
- 45:58once teamed with a mercenary force to drop from planes and use machine guns to
- 46:01stop minors from striking to improve their working conditions. Texas Pushkin talking about just
- 46:09as being a failure and everything he does sounds exactly like our senile commander in
- 46:14chief. I disagree, and you look at the track record what we're enjoying
- 46:17right now in West Virginia. When you see these ribbon cuttings, whether it's
- 46:21a new core form energy or this most recent hydrogen hub, it's all due
- 46:28to several pieces of legislation that were passed under the first two years of the
- 46:30Biden administration. When he actually had a Congress of Democratic Congress that he could
- 46:36work with, whether it's the Inflation Reduction Act, whether it was the Chips
- 46:40Bill, whether it was the Infrastructure Bill, American Rescue Plan. A lot
- 46:45of that investment in West Virginia is due to that work that this administration did
- 46:51with the help of Senator Mansions. I might sound like a broken record,
- 46:53but it's not getting any less true. It's the truth. It is the
- 46:58truth, and you're not. Fortunately, you're not going to see much more
- 47:00like that because the Republicans have the control of the House of Representatives and nothing
- 47:05is getting done. Five and I brought to you a part by Generations Physical

- 47:16be watching the Republican debate tonight, Michael. You know, I might watch
- 47:21a clock. It's all late. I like to get up earlier, and
- 47:25you know, we'll see how you know it's the battle for vice president.
- 47:29I guess because right now they're all away behind Uh, your guy Trump.
- 47:34I wish you would not refer to him as my guy because he's not my
- 47:37guy. But well, it was funny because he actually said that in a
- 47:42statement. He said something to the effect of, I'll be watching to interview
- 47:46my next vice president. And it's not gonna be Pents, I can tell
- 47:50you that. But but I think what will be interesting about is to see
- 47:52how far they go to the extreme extreme right. They're gonna be trying to
- 47:58really outmagat each other in an effort to become the second place candidate. And
- 48:04you know, there is also a distinct possibility because I do think a lot
- 48:07of these, uh, these charges against against President Trump, former President Trump,
- 48:12are very serious, and there's a distinct possibility that he might actually have
- 48:15to take a plea deal that takes him off the ballot. He's going to
- 48:17show he's got I think Juliana Giuliani is supposed to be in court in Atlanta
- 48:22today, uh, and I think Trump is supposed to be there tomorrow,
- 48:25and this time he's actually going to be finger printed and wade and the whole
- 48:30medical thing. Yes, I'll have all that. Tex says, this is
- 48:34the Democratic Party chair support Amy Goodwin's war and women where victims are not believed
- 48:38hashtag women should support women. Uh. Tex says, if we don't have
- 48:45a puppetry department where we're Republicans to be educated, the GOP needs its puppets.
- 48:50Uh that that well, that was that was clever. Tex says,
- 48:53what about w grads, the good to grad school that requires a foreign language
- 48:58for admission. I guess there's a whole lot of issues. Here's something else
- 49:02that really bothered me is why did President ge wait until moving in day to
- 49:07make these announcements. He waited until the students were already showing up, instead
- 49:10of giving the proper respect and treating the students with that kind of respect to
- 49:16give them a heads up on what was going on at the university. Tell
- 49:20you this is gonna have long lasting effects on this state. Uh, it's
- 49:27you know, to destroy public education in this state. It's really it's it's
- 49:30really throwing away our future. And and it's sad. And this isn't just
- 49:32political talking points. Uh. I sincerely love this state and I hate to
- 49:37see what's what's been happening to it over the over the past decade. Well,
- 49:40and I think that the really sad thing too is that most and I'm
- 49:45as big as sports, not as you are, and you know, you
- 49:46and are big sports fans. We're talking about sports are in a break.
- 49:49But if if this were, if these problems were to be leveled upon the
- 49:53WV athletic program, I think people would be more interested. I guess that's
- 49:58where we are. It's where we are over it. If you think this
- 50:00won't affect recruiting for football and basketball, and I know that we're talking about
- 50:05uh, you know, higher education, and that's what's more important. And
- 50:07I'm also a sports fan, and maybe people will pay attention because it is
- 50:12going to have a spillover effect on our football and basketball programs and it will
- 50:16be harder to recruit student athletes to come to our university to play sports.
- 50:22And yeah, yeah, maybe when we go when we go winless in football,
- 50:27maybe people will wake up. But it's it's coming unfortunately, Texas.
- 50:30Pushkin's right about problems being caused by a largely absentee governor, but can absolve
- 50:34himself of helping get the guy in office in the first place. But you
- 50:37said you didn't support it or you didn't vote for it in the primary.
- 50:40Yeah, I had, I had, I had a binary choice in that
- 50:44general election, and I chose him over Bill Cole, who I had also
- 50:47worked with and thought would have been been not have been a good governor.
- 50:52Tex says, where has this ever happened? Our governor's wages have been garnaged
- 50:54for failure to pay a bank dad accord ordered him to pay six years worth
- 50:58of health insurance premiums for his coal company workers, and just last week,
- 51:00the billionaire governor was hit with one point two billion dollars in fines against companies
- 51:05in Virginia. I thank the Texture. I will thank that texture for having
- 51:08you read that, because that's the first time I've heard those words mentioned on
- 51:13this station in quite some time, and something that should be talked about.
- 51:16You know, back when somebody brought up twenty sixteen when the governor first shrine,
- 51:21and I think a lot of people, you know, were infatuated with
- 51:24the idea of the businessman coming in and running in the state like a business.
- 51:28Well, unfortunately he has run the state like he has his businesses,
- 51:31which means he doesn't pay. Incredibly irresponsible the way he runs his businesses,
- 51:37and what we're finding out is probably the reason why he has been successful as
- 51:39businesses because he was born with millions of dollars that's why, all right,
- 51:45quick text, someone needs to explained to Pushkin that expanding into a new state
- 51:47of the new business takes years and investors don't just up and decide overnight to
- 51:51open a multimillion dollar facilities. Sometimes takes years to get those permits approved fifteen
- 51:55seconds. Well we're not going to be getting them now, Well we are
- 51:59getting and then that's what the texture is referring to. Well, yeah,
- 52:02but not a lot of it was because of the with the infrastructure build had
- 52:07us be able to build up the area around New Court or bringing as business
- 52:10and with the Inflation Reduction Act has caused this investment into green energy that has
- 52:15brought these types of companies in Michael five any life percent apartment making. You'll
- 52:19separate the two bye, We'll see you tomorrow. Still then have fun and
