- 0:00Thank you. How many podcasts exist in this world,
- 0:07and out of those, how many of those podcasts
- 0:10are actively posting at least once a month? Okay,
- 0:13so as of 2025 -2026, there are roughly 4 .5 to
- 0:174 .6 million podcasts indexed across major directories
- 0:22worldwide. So about 440 ,000 podcasts have published
- 0:26recently enough to be considered active, and
- 0:29only about 15 % of podcasts on Apple Podcasts
- 0:32have released an episode in the last... 90 days.
- 0:35Let that sink in. Teen percent of podcasts that
- 0:38exist in the world are considered to be active.
- 0:41So when I hear the argument that people make,
- 0:43oh, well, why would I start a podcast? There's
- 0:45a million casts out there and why does there
- 0:48need to be another one? Because yeah, it might
- 0:49be out there, but they ain't posting nothing
- 0:51on it. Welcome back to another episode of Abby
- 0:54the Podcast Lady. We are just getting right into
- 0:57it today. So I hear all the time, always in my
- 1:00initial calls with people when they reach out
- 1:02to me and they're like, I want to start a pod.
- 1:03podcasts. I don't know how to make money from
- 1:05it. And then usually the next question is, but
- 1:07there's already so many podcasts on this topic.
- 1:10Why would I add to that? Why would I be the person
- 1:12to make another podcast on this topic? Well,
- 1:15your answer is right there. There probably are
- 1:17podcasts on your topic, but there aren't people
- 1:19actively posting about it. And that's the thing.
- 1:22When it comes to podcasting, consistency is so
- 1:24key to all of it. So that's what I want to talk
- 1:27about today. Why you should just not be afraid
- 1:30to go headfirst into making your pod be. the
- 1:33authority that you're setting out to be. So one
- 1:35of my favorite arguments to make for people when
- 1:37they come up to me and they say, oh, you know,
- 1:39why would I make another podcast? There's a million
- 1:41other podcasts out there about being a mom. Okay.
- 1:44Yeah, there probably are. One, it's probably
- 1:46made by moms and they're probably busy and they
- 1:48probably stopped posting about their podcast
- 1:50a long time ago. I actually just recently found
- 1:53someone in Minnesota who said they had a podcast
- 1:56and I was super excited because I found them
- 1:57on Instagram. I'm like, oh, cool. Definitely
- 1:59want to check out what they got going on. I'm
- 2:01not overly. interested in mom content but i am
- 2:03interested in content creation so i just was
- 2:06wondering what they had shaking with it and they
- 2:08made like seven episodes and quit a few years
- 2:10ago that's it they kept making content but they
- 2:12just didn't make the podcast anymore i'm like
- 2:14wow what a missed opportunity because they have
- 2:16this huge active engaged audience but they just
- 2:18stopped making their podcast and i'm sure it
- 2:20was for a myriad of reasons it looked like they
- 2:22were co -hosting it with someone so it probably
- 2:25was a co -hosting conflict that they ran into
- 2:27with scheduling especially if they're both moms
- 2:29it could have just not been the kind of content
- 2:31they wanted to create. Maybe it just wasn't going
- 2:33in a direction that they wanted it to, but they
- 2:36had a really solid, like I think 10 or 11 episodes.
- 2:38They had blogs built for it. They had a gorgeous
- 2:40website built and they just stopped making it.
- 2:43And I hear all the time, oh, but why would I
- 2:45be the one? If you can stick with it, you can
- 2:47be the one. That's the thing. It's all these
- 2:50people drop off like flies when it comes to making
- 2:52a podcast because they just don't understand
- 2:54when they go into it, what exactly it all entails.
- 2:57Most people sit down to record a show and they're
- 2:59like, oh, yay. lights, camera, microphone, let's
- 3:02do this. I now have a podcast, but they don't
- 3:04see the backend work that it takes to actually
- 3:06keep that podcast consistent. It's a lot of editing.
- 3:08It's a lot of content creation. It's a lot of
- 3:10building things and waiting. It's a lot of sitting
- 3:13and waiting for the time to pass, unfortunately,
- 3:16because that's what podcasting is. It's not an
- 3:19overnight thing. But yeah, I was really disappointed
- 3:21when I saw that this mom podcast with a really
- 3:23active Instagram audience wasn't leveraging their
- 3:26podcast that they had initially created. It's
- 3:28like, oh, what a bummer. But that's - the thing.
- 3:29So if you're sitting in that boat going, I want
- 3:31to start a mom podcast about my experience, but
- 3:33I just don't feel like anyone wants to hear it.
- 3:35They probably do. And if you're bold enough to
- 3:38keep showing up week after week after week, it
- 3:40can pay off big time. So that's definitely something
- 3:43to think about. Another argument I like to make
- 3:45with people when they say, oh, but you know,
- 3:47I want to make this podcast on this topic, but
- 3:49let's say it's a leadership podcast. I want to
- 3:51make a leadership podcast, but there's just so
- 3:53many out there already. Like, why would I add
- 3:55to that? No one's had your leadership experience.
- 3:58Even if If maybe it's you and a coworker, let's
- 4:01say you've even worked at the same place your
- 4:02entire careers out of college. You've been co
- 4:05-leaders in a situation of some sort. Even that
- 4:07person is not going to have the exact same experience
- 4:10as you. Your experience is so valuable. No one
- 4:14has lived your life. No one has gone through
- 4:16exactly the same things you have. They can probably
- 4:19relate to a lot of the things that you've gone
- 4:21through, but no one has had your exact lived
- 4:24experience. So yeah, there might be a lot of
- 4:26leadership podcasts out there. But there's a
- 4:28reason for it because people are looking for
- 4:30leadership. They're looking for the topic you
- 4:33are the expert on that you want to create on
- 4:35that you feel called to create on. So definitely
- 4:38take that into consideration. Your lived experience
- 4:40is worth sharing. It's worth leading other people
- 4:44through and hopefully they can learn something
- 4:46from it and become a better version of themselves
- 4:48because of what you went through and what you
- 4:51learned and the takeaways you had. So definitely
- 4:53keep in mind that your lived experience is not
- 4:56the same as any. So even though it might be a
- 4:58similar podcast topic, it's so far from the same.
- 5:01And my final argument that I like to make when
- 5:03people come up to me and they're like, yeah,
- 5:05I want to start a podcast, but there's just so
- 5:06many out there. I don't know. It's probably not
- 5:08for me. I want to do it, but it just seems like
- 5:11there's a lot to compete with. Here's the deal.
- 5:13Your podcast is your marketing. If you do it
- 5:15right, your podcast is your core marketing strategy.
- 5:18Are you going to use someone else's podcast as
- 5:21your marketing for your brand? I mean, you could.
- 5:23It would look a little weird and it might raise
- 5:25some questions. But in all reality, at the end
- 5:28of the day, you're not going to grab someone
- 5:29else's podcast on cat parenting to market your
- 5:33cat business. Like that doesn't make sense. You
- 5:35could probably be a guest on their podcast, maybe
- 5:37use it to share your experience. But if you want
- 5:40your podcast to be the core of your marketing
- 5:42strategy, you can't use someone else's show.
- 5:45I mean, again, you can, but you're going to get
- 5:46some weird responses from it. So really think
- 5:49about that. Your lived experience, your knowledge,
- 5:52your brand, your voice is not on someone else's.
- 5:55show. It can be, you can be guests on other people's
- 5:57show, but it's not your platform. You don't own
- 5:59that audience. If you want to build your own
- 6:01audience, the best place to do it is your own
- 6:03podcast, your own owned media. It is so important.
- 6:07So just something to chew on. If you want to
- 6:09start a podcast in 2026, but you're thinking,
- 6:11oh, there's just so many other shows. Everyone
- 6:13and their mom has a podcast. All the bros have
- 6:15their podcasts because we all should have our
- 6:17own podcast. That's how things should be going
- 6:19in this year and the way the media escape is
- 6:22changing. So just really reconsider. your argument
- 6:25of everyone has a podcast. I don't know. I'm
- 6:28just another voice in the crowd. No, you're your
- 6:30own voice and you should definitely own it and
- 6:32definitely get it out there into the world. So
- 6:34thank you so much for tuning in to another episode
